Renison Goldfields Consolidated Limited (RGC) and Consolidated Gold Fields Plc (CGF) purchased New Guinea Goldfields Limited (NGG) in 1982 as an exploration venture. Following an intensive drilling programme in the Upper Ridges area sufficient ore reserves were outlined to justify the installation of a new 700 tonnes of ore per day gravity gold extraction plant. Major considerations in the design of the new plant were to minimise production inter- ruptions in the existing plant and to include simple, but technically efficient, equipment that could be operated and maintained by a workforce with limited experience in modern technology. These goals were achieved over a six month period, commissioning being carried out in April, 1983. Mining the epithermal gold deposit is by open cut benching and truck haulage. The gravity concentrator includes a scrubber, wet hammer mill and rod mill, to crush, grind and prepare the ore for sizing and desliming. Gold recovery units consist of a jig, spirals, shaking tables and amalgam barrels. Although the majority of the gold is in the minus 100 plus 20 microns size fraction a recovery of 63 percent, from a head grade of 2.0g/tonne, is Achieved.

This paper outlines the journey of cultural maturation and management system development at the Mt Rawdon (MRO) gold mine from its acquisition by Evolution Mining Limited (Evolution) in late 2011 to 2016.Evolution embarked upon a series of projects that aimed to improve the operational consistency and implementation of change on-site, while leveraging off the existing strengths of the operation. This document describes the gaps that were identified, the processes used to close them, and the resulting cultural change and production outcomes, with a specific focus on how to optimise the culture at any mining operation.MRO had a history of four owners in less than three years when it became a key asset of Evolution. The site leadership team (SLT) decided to influence the culture at MRO by reviewing and upgrading the existing management processes.The first priority was to improve transparency and collaboration at the SLT level, followed by improving competency in project management. The next phase was to strengthen the internal communication using a deliberately designed network of meetings, communication screens and other initiatives. Once there was some traction, the focus moved toward increasing production volume and decreasing cost per unit by improving short-term planning and execution capability. Together with other initiatives, this resulted in improved collaboration between all functions, which in turn netted over 37 per cent mining production uplift.Following solid success, a process of prioritisation and alignment management was implemented. This supported the ‘Mine to Mill one operation’ ideal and allowed the SLT to decide month-by-month what actions were to be prioritised. These priorities incorporated production realities and longer term imperatives of the balanced business plan.Much of this work was completed during a period of declining gold prices and a relentlessly strong Australian dollar, making it difficult to justify spending money on improvement projects. The Golden Cross mine is situated in a sensitive environmental setting on the North Island of New Zealand, about 150 kilometres south-east of Auckland and about 8 kilometres NW of Waihi. The mine is situated in dipping topography, with volcanic ashes making up soils, fault zones running through the area, and rainfall of about 3m per year on average. Water management is the most demanding environmental challenge on site, and a comprehensive programme has been put in place to address tailings deposition, long term tailings storage, and water treatment during and after operations.

Alfred Nobel first invented a practical detonator in 1863 and then the blasting cap in 1865. At that time the detonator was used on the end of a length of safety fuse to initiate nitroglycerine-based explosives. Since then the detonator has gone through a number of changes. The instantaneous electric detonator was the first to allow remote firing. The electric delay detonator followed and allowed for timing between holes. In the mid 1970s the NONEL« Tube was invented. This tube combined with NONEL« detonators meant that many of the safety issues, such as stray current and radio frequency, associated with electric delay detonators were eliminated. This system gave the mining industry a reliable and fairly accurate system with which to detonate shots of any size. Since the early 1980s a large amount of research and development work has been done around the world to create a more accurate detonator for the mining and quarrying industry. After years of research, electronic detonators have emerged as the most accurate and precise initiation system available to the mining and quarry industry today. Electronics provide the user with millisecond timing accuracy. The improved level of timing control allows operations to improve fragmentation, throw and reduce vibration levels. There are now a number of different electronic detonator suppliers on the market today. In 2004 Dyno Nobel formed a joint venture called DetNet with AECI. DetNet has a suite of electronic detonators: DigiDet«, HotShot« and QuickShot«. This paper will focus on the HotShot« system, the first of the three new initiation systems to be released to the market in Australia by Dyno Nobel.

The optimum defluorinating conditions for Sichuan bastnasite crude ore were determined by orthogonal experiments. Over 95 per cent fluorine in the crude ore was stripped by roasting 30 minutes of the crude ore with Na2CO3/ore =0.25 at 650oC. The stripped fluorine crude ore was further treated by NH4 Cl to recover rare earth. Above 95 per cent rare earth can be leached by water after the stripped fluorine crude ore mixed NH4Cl(NH4Cl/ore =1:1) roasted 1 h at 325oC. At the same time, the rare earth leaching solution contains little Fe, Si and Al. Therefore it is propitious to further purify the solution and recover rare earth.

The creation of an accurate and precise enough database requires the collection of many representative samples, subsampling and assaying them without destroying their integrity. The selection and implementation of sampling protocols often lead to severe difficulties, making the unaware practitioner vulnerable to massive exploration, feasibility and operating failures. Therefore, there is no substitute for a good understanding of the Theory of Sampling (TOS). Either because of ignorance, or because of short-term economic reasons, failure to comply with many stringent conditions can be devastating for the validity of a feasibility study, leading to false evaluations, to the abandonment of a viable property, or to the exploitation of one that is not profitable. All these failures have something in common: insufficient duplicate sampling, subsampling and assaying were performed; very important, preliminary heterogeneity tests were never performed; for short-term economic reasons, poor sampling and subsampling protocols were selected, second-class sampling systems and weightometers were installed and poor preventive maintenance and cleaning were implemented;and sampling experts were called only when the project was obviously in trouble. The conclusion is clear: in due time, iterative auditing of sampling practices is an insurance policy against massive financial losses for the company involved. A complete, comprehensive 100 point checklist of sampling Quality Assurance and Quality Control is provided, so critically important details to ensure success are not forgotten.

The George Fisher deposit is a significant sediment hosted silver-leadzinc resource located 2 km north of the Hilton Mine in NW Queensland. The George Fisher feasibility project involved the completion of underground and surface drilling programs to delineate Measured and Indicated Resource which could be converted to an Ore Reserve through mining and commercial studies. The geological information which was collected and used for the feasibility study included a major program of diamond drilling, predominantly from underground sites, but with some drilling also completed from surface. All drillcore was geologically and geotechnically logged, sampled and assayed. Data was also collected from underground cross-cut and drive development which was mapped for rocktype, ore distribution, structure and geotechnical condition. This new geological data, generated during the Pre-Feasibility and Feasibility stages, was combined with results of all previous drilling campaigns in the George Fisher area to produce a comprehensive database on which geological modelling and Resource estimation could be based. To allow fast and accurate collection and utilisation of data from the drilling program, digital collection processes were used where possible. This resulted in rapid data entry into the project database, significantly enhanced data quality, 100 per cent data ownership within the project team and increased productivity levels. Processes used during the project data collection program are described, lessons learned are related and suggestions for ænext timeÆ are listed using the benefit of hindsight.

Spontaneous combustion hazard assessment from an environmental impact perspective is not well understood and is seldom given due consideration in environmental impact statements. In surface mining operations, self-heating, leading to spontaneous combustion may occur when rock units containing reactive metal sulphides and organic carbon are disturbed by mining operations and exposed to the atmosphere. When these rocks are present self-heating will occur in situations where the rate of heat generated from oxidation reactions exceeds the rate of heat lost to the surroundings. The processes and mechanisms that lead to spontaneous combustion events are varied and generally complex. To effectively manage spontaneous combustion in surface mining operations, it is necessary to characterise the spontaneous combustion propensity of the geological materials involved. Until recently there has been no testing procedure for assessing the propensity of waste rock to spontaneously combust that has been adopted by industry. However, new developments in adiabatic test methods have proven successful in determining the self-heating behaviour of coal (Beamish and Theiler, 2015) and coal containing reactive pyrite (Beamish and Theiler, 2017). These adiabatic test methods have now been modified to assess the incubation behaviour of waste rocks and can be used for their spontaneous combustion characterisation in advance of mining (Beamish and Theiler, 2016). The new method provides a practical means to establish the likelihood of developing a spontaneous combustion event for the specific site conditions. This paper presents examples of the use of a cost effective first pass filter for assessing spontaneous combustion potential of waste rock based on geochemical data from four surface mines. The mining industry has expanded significantly in the Pacific Region over the past two decades through a mix of new developments and brownfields expansions of existing operations. Despite this overall success there are also a number of well publicised examples of less than successful minerals ventures. These problem developments highlight the fact that success cannot be taken for granted and that rigorous planning and attention to detail is essential. The dominant growth has come through expansion of existing businesses, notably alumina, iron ore and coal, achieved through both efficiency gains on existing plant and step change capacity additions such as new mines and/or expanded processing plant. This expansion has largely been linked to increased market opportunities. The major issues are the quality and extent of the host resource, achieving the market targets, and the efficiency of the expansion effort. There can be also a range of site specific issues which need to be addressed. The development of new greenfields operations is often more complex as it can bring a wide range of new issues. Depending on the nature of the development, and the companies involved, these can extend from initial financing through to obtaining a market position. Incorporating major new technology and/or establishing infrastructure and attracting staff to remote locations can also add significant challenges. This paper outlines many of the critical factors which need to be considered prior to proceeding with major expansions or greenfields developments. These will be linked to a number of developments in the region over the past decade.

Various enabling technologies and systems have recently been introduced in the mining industry. Such systems include miner-bolters with concurrent cutting and bolting, employment of two shuttle cars, adoption of self drilling bolts and utilisation of continuous haulage or monorail systems. The paper discusses how Flexsim discrete event simulation models were used to assess how these proposed mining systems can best be used to achieve and sustain high roadway development rates of 10 m per operating hour for 20 h/day.

Exploration risk increases with time, due to a general decrease in prospectivity as the more accessible deposits are found, and be- cause of rising costs and demands due to an improving standard of living. Risk is separated into financial risk, which increases sharply at the development stage, and the risk of failure which is at its peak at the outset of exploration. Risk is also divided into internal and external factors; some of the latter cannot be offset, viz. the systematic overall risk for any enterprise. The recently emergent risk embodied in withdrawal of large areas from exploration access is discussed. An appeal is made for objective multiple land-use policies to be applied so that land remains available at reasonable cost and with appropriate environ- mental safeguard conditions. Risks specific to gold exploration are discussed. As gold now accounts for over 50% of all mineral exploration, and most other metals are depressed, any sharp decline in gold will have grave effects on the ex- ploration industry. Gold exploration will become more difficult and expensive in about five years, after most of the readily accessible deposits in Australia are found. Government's role is important in pro- viding stability and basic data at reasonable cost. Exploration for specific minerals or of particular areas could be stimulated by extending the 150%.tax deductibility of R & D to aspects of exploration of strategic im- portance, particularly in the event of a downturn. Exploration is classic scientific research, at least through to the proving Stages.

Paste fill has been used successfully at Henty Gold Mine for the past five years. It has allowed 100 per cent extraction of the orebody, stabilised poor ground and enabled wide sections and offsets to be mined safely. However, there are a number of inefficiencies in the current paste fill system. These include the low output from the drum filter, the addition of aggregate to the paste to compensate and the trucking of paste from the plant to the portal. These inefficiencies have increased the operating cost of the paste fill system and caused a number of operational challenges such as blockages and increased pipe wear. These challenges have been partly overcome by taking ownership of the paste fill process, improved quality control and better communication. Henty is currently developing two new orebodies, the Mt Julia and the Darwin and has an opportunity to build an efficient paste fill operation. This is likely to be a high density paste system without aggregate, either located above the new orebodies or located at the plant and pumped to the new site.

The Utah International group of companies has a wide geographic spread of operations, including a significant interest inAustralia's largest coking coal operation in Queensland, steaming and coking coal mines in USA, a copper mine in Canada, a half interest in an iron ore operation in Brazil, a number of smaller operations, and a significant portfolio of undeveloped properties in South America, South Africa and South East Asia.The opportunity to acquire this group of companies presented an immediate problem to BHP in that it was regarded as too large for BHP to absorb by itself. In addition, there was a concern that such an acquisition would increase BHP's coking coal exposures to unacceptable levels. Despite these dilemmas, BHP was keen to acquire Utah.A plan was therefore developed and agreed to by General Electric (GE) (the then owner of Utah) which would give BHP nine months in which to put together a consortium to share in the ownership of the Queensland coal assets (plus coal assets owned by BHP), and to arrange a project financing for use by BHP and the consortium. BHP would own 100% of the rest of the assets.

Bulk explosive technology for underground mining has not seen any significant technological advances since the widespread transition from ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) to ammonium nitrate emulsions (ANE) commencing in the 1980s. The in-hole energy profile that conventional ANE systems deliver is limited by the physics of chemical gassing and simple control systems. This compromises the range, precision, and accuracy of energy delivery into the blasthole, and in some cases limits the length of charge that can be delivered. Orica’s 4D™ bulk system removes many of these constraints, enabling better blasting performance across all underground mining methods. This paper reviews work completed at three mining operations across Australia, the United States, and Chile with a focus on how this system can improve mining operations and deliver sustained commercial and productivity benefits into the future. These benefits include improved ore recovery, reduced dilution from waste rock, and reduced overall explosives consumption. This paper also reviews how this new technology can be applied for planning future mining operations.

RME has a vision for a new grinding plant operational paradigm made possible by RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System. Some new liner designs can degrade SAG mill performance because of mill volume loss, ball strike (rotational speed limitations) and other issues often brought about by modifying liner design for maximum life and without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences. Freshly relined mills can initially produce as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the linersÆ wear life. RMEÆs proposition is to see new liners designed for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent mill relines but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance, not maximum life. In other words, mill liner profiles and mill relining speed become key operational controls and not simply æmust doÆ maintenance functions. Taken to the extreme, liner profiles may prove capable of ætuningÆ a grinding plant for maximum profitability in any metal price environment. Following the introduction, the first section of this paper provides an update describing recent and significant developments within RMEÆs range of Mill Relining Systems, the enabling technologies which permit more frequent liner exchange without incurring additional downtime imposts. The second section outlines RMEÆs vision of a æliner profile versus profitabilityÆ commercial model, developed either intuitively or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum commercial outcome, off-line in the virtual world, before committing to an expensive liner experiment.

The Pic de Fon iron oxide deposit is a potential major new source of iron ore, located at the southern end of the Simandou range in eastern Guinea on the West African Craton. The deposit is hosted by banded iron formations (BIFs) within a supracrustal sequence, which lies unconformably upon a crystalline basement. The host BIFs and shales have been metamorphosed up to staurolite-grade itabirite and phyllite respectively. Stratigraphic relationships are obscured by polyphase deformation, although the sequence appears to comprise a lower phyllite(-minor quartzite) unit and transitional phyllite-iron formation overlain by three itabirite units. It is the itabirite units, selectively enriched to iron grades in excess of 65 per cent Fe (with low deleterious elements), that constitute the Pic de Fon deposit. Samples acquired from exploration diamond drill holes and outcrop across the deposit have been collected to investigate the Pic de Fon lithologies and iron-rich material types. Initial research techniques have included geological mapping, reflected light microscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD) studies and ICP-AES geochemistry. The aim is to develop a model for deposit genesis that may assist future exploration and deposit exploitation planning. Results to date have identified a variety of hematite textures, which include recrystallised trellis, interlobate and granoblastic hematite after magnetite. In addition, fine-grained bladed to acicular microplaty hematite appears to both replace itabirite banding and infill porosity. Field relationships indicate a structural control of microplaty hematite development. Geochemistry and XRD results suggest a loss of silica with negligible iron addition during the conversion of itabirite to ore grade mineralisation. The enrichment process(es) is also accompanied by a gradual increase in K, Mg, Na, (Ca and Al).

A technology involving separate unit processes for the generation and use of ferric ions for the oxidation of sulphidic minerals has been developed. The technology utilises a stand-alone automated bioreactor for ferric-ion generation (termed SAAB-FIG) and produces a low pH, ferric ion-rich leach liquor with a high oxidation potential. This leach liquor is then employed, in a separate unit process, to oxidise sulphidic minerals and regenerate ferrous iron that may subsequently be recycled to the bioreactor for the continual generation of ferric ions. The technique was successfully applied for the recovery of copper from chalcocite (Cu2S) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), as well as other ores and concentrates containing copper sulphide minerals. Coarse ore, ground ore and concentrates were treated with acidic solutions containing 8 to 12 (g/L) Fe(III) ions at a variety of temperatures. This process yielded over 50 per cent of the contained copper from both chalcopyrite and chalcocite samples. Maximum reaction rates and copper recoveries were found to be highly dependent upon temperature and pH and leach liquors containing bacterial cells displayed little difference in their leaching efficiency when compared to cell-free leach liquors.

From the mid-1970s ZC Mines at Broken Hill had a policy to increase ore production rates at progressively lower head grades. In the mid-1980s the mine suffered crippling losses at a time of low metal prices. An important contributory factor was the inherent geological distribution of metal grades in the seven defined ore lenses. Grades are bimodal, and perhaps, trimodal, in each ore lens. There is a tonnage deficiency in the critical cut-off grade zone of 7-10% Pb+Zn. Lowering the cut-off grade introduced siliceous and pyrrhotitic material which resulted in significantly poorer metallurgical performance. This example shows that the mine geologist needs to know the grade distribution of the orebody and to convey clearly the downstream implications of changes in the head grade.

The treatment of beach sands in'' the Bunbury/Capel' area for the extraction of ilmenite is a very recent development in the mining industry in'J7estern Australia. Nevertheless since the commencement of production in 1956, ilmenite has become the sixth most important mineral produced. The increasing world recognition of W.A. as a major' Iiroducer of ilmenite is due primarily ' to its low chromic oxide. ; (Cr203 content,, 0,03% to 0.04%, combined with a medium to high grade TiO2 content, 54% - 6 , supported by large reserves, a'. stable government with close access to good shipping facilities.. Ilmenite is produced from-these deposits at low-costs, enabling the industry to compete on world markets despite high rates for sea freights because of the distance from.major markets.
