Large metallurgical complexes are substantial users of energy, water and assets. To improve the effectiveness of energy and assets the quality of the data and events become paramount for real-time operational management. A lack of resources at the local operations and at the enterprise makes it impossible to process the sea of information and many projects have failed. As such, a novel approach for implementation of continuous improvements at the local level and innovations at the strategic level was implemented at all operating plants at Anglo American Platinum. Sixteen concentrators, three smelters and two refinery process systems were integrated to scale the information for manufacturing services at the local and enterprise level. The new capability of an enterprise real-time monitoring and diagnosis software infrastructure was available to implement many business strategies in tandem. Mineral and metallurgical processing knowledge is used to simplify the implementation of the data model. As such, asset monitoring, energy, production and process control management were implemented in an integrated approach reusing the same data but with different context and time horizons to have a standard methodology for local root cause analysis. This paper will highlight a sustainability management approach to change and empower the local and strategic team to collaborate using a new approach for adaptive reporting and condition-based event management and notifications. The results based on the integrated and collaborative team efforts will be presented. A new engine family has been developed by Caterpillar Tractor Co. for application in off-highway trucks. This family, the 3500 Series is available in three configurations, covering a 600-1200 kilowatt range. This engine series incorporates the latest in design technology, stringent functional specifications for servicing ease, fuel economy, reliability, optimum performance and parts interchangeability. TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION The 3500 Series Engine has been under development by Caterpillar for over eight years and has undergone extensive testing in the laboratory and in field prototype units. - The engine configuration is a 600 Vee in 8, 12, and 16 cylinder versions. - The intermittent power output per cylinder is 75 kilowatt (100 HP). Net power for off-highway trucks is 600-1200 kilowatt (800-1600 Hp) depending on engine configurations. The LaModel program was initially developed in 1993, and it is used to model the stresses and displacements in thin tabular deposits such as coal seams. It uses the displacement-discontinuity variation of the boundary-element method with a simplified laminated overburden model and because of this formulation, it is able to quickly and effectively analyse large areas of single- or multiple-seam mines. Over the last couple of decades, LaModel has been used by many mine engineers and researchers for improving pillar designs and mine safety, and it has been continually updated to add functionality and improve its ease of use and accuracy. The present LaModel can calculate seam displacements and overburden, multiple-seam and total seam stresses, pillar safety factors, energy values, roof-bending stresses, fault effects and surface subsidence. It can automatically generate the mine and overburden grids from AutoCAD drawings, and it includes wizards for automatically generating Bieniawski strength coal pillars, easily calibrating the overburden properties to observed abutment stresses and calibrating the gob material to expected gob loading. Queensland legislation, industry codes and policies relating to mine rehabilitation and closure create the expectation of successful progressive rehabilitation and that the post-mining environment is being returned to a condition suited to a pre-agreed, beneficial end use. Yet none of the rehabilitated mined land in the Bowen Basin has been certified as successful by authorities suggesting there is a gap between current rehabilitation and the full environmental outcomes that the legislation could deliver. We tested the veracity of this perspective and reflect on where responsibility for any discrepancy lies.We first reviewed current Queensland legislation and industry codes relating to stakeholder engagement, rehabilitation, closure planning and post-mining land use. We tested the accessibility of the documentation trail for several recent coal-mining projects in the Bowen Basin and examined the level of detail in approval documentation. We then assessed the rehabilitation performance reports of these mines in relation to the contents of their approval documents. Legislation, guidelines and codes repeatedly emphasise the need to plan for closure before mine operations begin and to progressively perform rehabilitation with an agreed end-use in mind. Early stakeholder involvement in these processes and transparency of actions and outcomes are also encouraged by government publications. Overall, in terms of transparency, we found that relevant documents are generally available to the persistent enquirer. However, the rehabilitation and closure undertakings given in both mine company and regulator documentation were commonly generic and rehabilitation obligations were not explicitly incorporated into rehabilitation plans. Rehabilitation reporting was also weak in that no distinction is required between successful and unsuccessful revegetation, nor to closure objectives and mine completion criteria. Responsibility for the apparent disconnect between regulatory intent and actual performance appears to begin with the regulator too readily allowing generic information and in not requiring performance reporting to correspond with approved post-mine conditions. As a result, companies may have a much greater rehabilitation and closure risk than mine management expects. Variations in many aspects of physical and chemical grade are often of concern to mining operations and mineral processing plants. In most circumstances these amounts of variation are predictable. At the time of planning new operations, we should be able to predict the amount of sampling and testing variation which our sampling devices, laboratory procedures and on-stream analysis devices will achieve. We should know how well our stockpiles, reclaimers and bins will homogenise material (or whether segregation will actually increase the amount of variation). We should be able to predict the amounts of variation that will occur on the important time or tonnage scales at the crucial p oints in our proposed operation. And once these amounts of variation are reliably known, mine planning will seem a little bit more like dealing with known knowns rather than like dealing with unknown unknowns.The first step towards quantifying amounts of variation for planned operations is to assess amounts of variation for existing operations. How many operations have estimates of amounts of variation in their databases? How often are people able to partition amounts of variation into amounts due to sampling error, amounts due to sample preparation, amounts due to assaying, and the amount of real variation in the stream of material?CITATION:Robinson, G K, 2012. Yellow phosphorus (YP) has been commercially produced since the 1920s. First in the USA by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), next in Russian (Kazakhstan) in the 1950s, and finally in China in the late 1970s and early 1980s. There are operations in Vietnam and Sarawak on a smaller scale. YP has become very in vogue due to its use in the production of lithium iron phosphate battery cathode precursor materials by the Chinese and other western battery manufacturers. The YP is also used to produce purified phosphoric acid and higher grades of acid using a thermal oxidation process after smelting. This paper will look at the basics of the smelting including slag chemistry, alloy chemistry and offgas chemistry. The paper will look at the design of the furnaces used in the YP production process as well as the downstream recovery of phosphorus from the smelter off-gas stream to YP. The next part of the discussion will focus on the operations of a YP smelter with regards to control of the furnace to optimise phosphorus recovery to YP. Will discuss tapping cycles for alloy and slag with a view to optimal phosphorus recovery. The discussion will close out with a review of operational challenges in the smelter and a brief description of the downstream conversion of YP to high purity phosphoric acid.

Over the last year at Clarabelle Mill, three circuit reconfigurations were implemented. One circuit reconfiguration, æA CleaningÆ, was initiated due to a furnace failure at the smelter complex, and two of the circuit reconfigurations, æincreased copper (Cu) separationÆ and the æInterim IsaMillÖ circuitÆ, were seen as opportunities to increase cash flow through the mill. A Cleaning and the Interim IsaMillÖ circuit took advantage of engineering design already completed for a major capital project. The engineering for each was modified, as needed, and construction of the required portions of the capital project was fast tracked. The increased Cu separation circuit change used existing test and plant equipment to increase the plant Cu concentrate production. Implementation of the projects required teams that included operations, maintenance, technical support, project management and capital project resources. This paper discusses the business reasons driving the changes and the forethought or synergies with other work, which made them a success, and what was learned through each project. Safety remains a critical priority for the Australian mineral resource industry and will receive increased focus in the future. This is particularly evident in underground coal mines where reserves are becoming deeper and more hazardous to extract. The CSIRO, through its Exploration and Mining Division, have recently delivered on two projects aimed at providing step-change capabilities in real-time risk management and hazard control. This paper describes the key outcomes of these projects.

Neutralisation, normally using lime, is the most widely used method for treating high flows of acid mine drainage (AMD). Lime costs can be very high however. If carbonate sources could be used to achieve pH values above six, costs could be greatly reduced. For example, use of locally quarried limestone at Mt Lyell could potentially reduce alkali costs from about $A 3.5 to $A 1 million/year. Methods for enhancing the effectiveness of limestone and magnesite for neutralising Mt Lyell and Savage River AMD respectively have been examined through a series of investigations. Small-scale testwork found that the maximum pH economically achievable with ground limestone was about five, due to slow dissolution rates and surface armouring. The problems of surface armouring were greatly reduced by the use of crushed limestone or magnesite at high pulp densities (75 per cent solids w/w), enabling pH values >6 to be achieved in a practical time frame. The use of particle sizes in the range 6 mm and finer also reduces costs by avoiding the need for grinding, and reduces the problems of solid-liquid separation and solid recycling that arise if large additions of ground carbonate are used. Pilot scale tests were carried out using tumbling drum reactors with limestone and Mt Lyell AMD and a pulsed-bed static reactor with magnesite and Savage River AMD. pH values averaging 6.2 and 6.4 were achieved with Mt Lyell and Savage River AMD respectively. Approximately 80 per cent of feed acidity was neutralised. A preliminary engineering design and cost estimate has been completed on the pulsed-bed reactor and shows that the concept is technically feasible and, if results are confirmed, economically attractive. Further pilot testing is planned.

Silica-Kaolin Sand Wet Sizing The Bulgarian deposits of silica-kaolin sand are localised in the eastern part of the Danube plain. After wet separation the raw material yields two products - washed kaolin (different grades) and silica sand (different grades). The water washing technology includes: disintegration; spiral classification; hydrocyclone classification and dewatering of kaolin grades; hydroclassification; sizing using drum screens and dewatering of silica sand grades. Research and development program has started to improve the silica-kaolin sand separation in processing plants. Based on the raw material and tails characterisation data and the preliminary experiments using Derrick Stacksizer screening machines a silica-kaolin sand wet sizing technology was developed. The full-scale pilot flowsheet includes the following units: Derrick Stacksizer equipped with 0.43 mm opening Derrick Urethane Panel; 500 mm Flat bottom Hydrocyclone; Derrick Stacksizer equipped with 0.150 mm opening Derrick Urethane Panel; 100 mm Hydrocyclone and Derrick Dual Motor Linear Motion Machine equipped with 0.064 mm opening Derrick Pyramid Panel. The pilot-test data clearly demonstrate that the new silica-kaolin sand wet sizing technology is suitable for Bulgarian silica-kaolin raw material. There are possibilities to increase the silica sand recovery increasing the production of silica sand grade PK 0.16 and starting the production a new grade PK 0.10.

The sequence of development and back analysis of the failure of a spoil pile in the 1B pit of the Moura Mine are given. The mode of failure was a two-wedge mechanism with a basal slip plane passing through a clay band about 2 m below the pit floor. Remedial actions for improving spoil pile stability are discussed.

Pit lakes, as a final void after completing open cut mining, are in most cases unavoidable. Initial mine designs and approvals require consideration and assessment of closure objectives, legislation and stakeholder acceptance to ensure suitable understanding of the closure liability. Mining companies undertake studies and engineering during the planning, operational and closure stages of mining to identify closure options for the final voids, which would be sustainable. Without adequate planning prior to and during the life of the mine, options during the closure stage become limited resulting in costly closure works or long-term liabilities. Engineering consultants provide a specialist service in the assessment of long-term pit lake water levels and characteristics. Ongoing advances in mining methodology and technology, coupled with improved data collection and data management aid in a better understanding of the complexities in estimating long-term pit lake water levels and characteristics. Closure objectives developed during the planning stage sets the requirements for long-term pit lake water levels, which could require maintaining a water level and pit water or discharge water quality. A variety of approaches could be used to assess these closure scenarios each requiring specific data and methodologies. Typically, limited data is available during the planning stage, which results in assumptions based on past experience and relevant case studies. Closure assessments are revisited during the life of mine and leading up to the closure stage, during which additional site-specific data is available improving the accuracy of the assessments.CITATION:Boshoff, H J J, 2018. It is only in the past decade or so that industrial exploitation of biological resources and techniques has become regarded as a distinct discipline. Commonly referred to as Biotechnology, it embraces biochemistry, microbiology and the engineering sciences and is mainly aimed at the biological conversion of suitable raw materials into desired end products. The catalytic agents are more often than not bacteria although other micro-organisms such as fungi are used. The range of micro-organisms used is wide and the choice depends upon the desired end product, which in turn depends upon the metabolic attributes, genetically engineered or otherwise, of the cells. The metabolic diversity of micro-organisms has been applied to processes such as antibiotic production, food processing, brewing and chemical production, and of course extraction of metals from ores. Metabolic diversity is, to a certain extent, based on nutrition, which, in its simplest form, can be divided into energy source, carbon requirements and nature of the electron donor producing reducing power to the cells. The source of energy may be light, in which case the organisms are phototrophic (eg green plants, algae). The carbon requirements and reducing power may come from organic sources. These organisms are then called heterotrophic (eg man and most bacteria, including the well known Escherichia colt). However, there is a group of bacteria whose energy metabolism depends upon chemical redox reactions, use inorganic carbon (CO2) and obtain their reducing power from reduced chemicals such as metal sulphides. These are known as chemolithotrophs. They play an important role in mineral recycling in nature and are also ideal for extraction of metals from ores. This is because they are extremeophiles being acidophilic (grow at very low pH) and sometimes also thermophilic (grow at very high temperatures). These bacteria operate in such hostile environments that competition, or contamination, by other organisms does not occur. Extraction of metals from ores by chemolithotrophic bacteria is commonly referred to as biohydrometallurgy. Other related areas are bioadsorption of metals from dilute solution,- microbial treatment of metal contaminated wastes and removal of toxic chemicals produced or used during mineral processing. This paper basically reviews the work that Gencor has undertaken in the field of biohydrometallurgy and the advancements it has made in commercialising the technology, but also touches on certain long-term areas of research that are currently under investigation.

Innovation and Business Skills Australia (IBSA) commissioned The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to undertake a study into how the role of AustraliaÆs senior managers is likely to change between now and 2020 and to identify the skills and attributes that will be needed to respond to those changes. This report builds on a previous study prepared by BCG in the early 1990s for the Industry Taskforce on Leadership and Management Skills (Karpin Committee), which provided a snapshot of the Senior Manager in 2010. AustraliaÆs opal and sapphire mining industry has fallen from its peak in the 1980s and 1990s into a significant low today. This is not due to exhaustion of the resource, but instead an over-reliance of the Australian miner on achieving a fair price for the gemstone product from offshore middlemen dealers. Gemstone and geological research is also at a low as Federal higher education expenditure has fallen with research institutions relying increasingly on private funding in an environment of restricted autonomy and flexibility for researchers. What little remaining research skills the universities have is being bled into the private sector as a result of the mining boom and encouraged by lower than average academic salaries. Nevertheless, some highly innovative research has been taking place, often by self-funded individuals and retired academics simply with a desire to advance the understanding of the particular branch of science in which they are interested. New models for the formation of sapphire and opal are now beginning to be applied to the exploration for these gemstone commodities. This research, together with well thought out plans for managing the gemstone product through its value-adding steps to the jewellery retail level, has the potential to bring about a resurgence in the Australian gemstone industry.

The ores described in this paper are from the two principal orebodies at Wiseman's Creek, a small village about 22 miles south-east of Bathurst in central-western New South Wales.The first official reference to mining at Wiseman's Creek is in "Mineral Statistics of New South Wales" of 1875, which reported that the Wiseman's Creek Copper Mining Company had proved a lode-later known as "North Wiseman's"-to a depth of 120 ft., where it was found to be 20 ft. wide. By 1876 the erection of a mill and smelting works had commenced, and the sulphide ore found to contain copper lead, zinc, silver and gold. Some oxidised ore was also being worked. Operations were, however, generally unsuccessful, and sporadic work up until 1907 produced only about 5,000 tons of ore. The other more important orebody of the locality-the Phoenix-was not opened until about 1895. By 1908, as reported by J. E. Carne, the shaft had been sunk 340 ft., with the extraction of both oxidised and primary ore. At the time of the slump in copper, pric'es in 1907 approximately 3,000 tons of, ore had been produced.Several smaller orebodies were discovered and worked during the same period as the North Wiseman's and Phoenix, but their output was more or less insignficant. THE OREBODIES AND THEIR GEOLOGICAL SETTINGIt is now impossible to examine the orebodies underground, but they appear to have formed a series of flat lenses, whose major axes were parallel to ,the foliation of the enclosing quartz-chlorite-muscovite schists. The largest ,of these lenses was worked as the North Wiseman's orebody, which was reported by Carne to vary in width from 1 ft. to 20 ft., and which probably extended discontinuously over a strike length of about 1,000 ft. The Phoenix orebody is stated to have varied from 1 ft. 6 in. to 3 ft. in width...

ABSTRACT- I Results are given for a series of tests in which a 300 mm pilot-scale Jameson cell has been used in copper recleaner flotation, and for the flotation of a lead rougher feed. the results indicate that the production rate of solids, at the same superficial air velocity Jg, is higher than in conventional columns. Thus in the copper recleaner application, the pulling rate reached 14 gm/cm2/min compared with between two and three for an operating column, while in the lead cleaner application the comparable figures were 12 - 14 gm/cm2/min for the Jameson cell vs 8 - 9 gm/cm2/min for a test column. A froth crowder was used to increase the air superficial velocity Jg in the Jameson cell in the copper recleaner, while holding the collection mechanism and pulp feed rates constant. The recovery increased from 50 per cent to over 90 per cent, suggesting that recovery is controlled mainly by the froth conditions, rather than the particle-bubble interactions in the Downcomer.

In both laboratory flotation experiments and from analysing the composition of the lead concentrate at the Boliden Tara lead-zinc mine in Ireland, it has been found that F-250 may replace cyanide as a pyrite depressant. Replacement or reduction of the cyanide consumption is highly desirable from a safety perspective given the toxicity of cyanide. Scrutiny of results from the plant trial indicate that F-250 is less efficient as a cyanide depressant when the flotation feed contains high levels of pyrite. Statistical analysis of the results does not capture this trend, illustrating a need to collect more data at higher pyrite ore levels. A recent model proposed for biopolymer-induced pyrite depression is reviewed and discussed next to the suggested mechanism for pyrite depression via cyanide. Review of the interactions causing pyrite depression point to different manners in achieving depression. In light of the less efficient F-250 pyrite depression at high pyrite levels, it is speculated if the two depressants may act synergistically at high levels of pyrite in the feed. The regeneration of the ceramic filter medium used in iron ore dewatering is often done by combining backwashing, ultrasonic cleaning and chemical regeneration. Of these three, the first two are applied more frequently, whereas chemical regeneration is done only when needed, eg once a day. Chemical regeneration of the ceramic filter medium in iron ore processing can involve the use of oxalic acid to dissolve the iron oxide particles. Even while performing simple chemical regeneration, meaning no ultrasound to assist the cleaning, the changes in the performance and in the structure of the filter medium could not be explained solely based on the dissolution or the removal of particles from the surface. Good regeneration results were obtained at 35 and 50¦C, meaning that the final permeability of the filter medium corresponded to that of unused filter medium. Permeability of the medium after regeneration at 15¦C was also good after 12 h, but did fall short of those regenerated at higher temperatures.
