There is growing interest in the mining industry on the application of ore sorting. While many are familiar with particle sorting, including the limitations that technology presents (e.g. throughput), bulk sorting, with its higher throughput potential, is less understood. Despite the potential to sort at higher throughputs, few operations have adopted bulk sorting processes, certainly not at large scale. It is suggested that the inability to reliably predict outcomes from bulk sorting may be limiting its adoption in mining projects. Consequently, an evaluation approach for bulk ore sorting has been developed such that mass pulls and grade upgrades can be predicted in the context of a mining study. The approach allows for evaluation of drill core assays and application of the consequently derived heterogeneity relationships to the block model for estimation of sorting outcomes. These processes were applied to conveyor-based bulk sorting for the CuMo project in Idaho, USA and are described in this paper.

A mineral systems approach was used to interpret precompetitive airborne mineral mapping geoscience data for iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) exploration in the Starra area, Eastern Succession, Mount Isa Inlier. Selected minerals were chosen to map possible source rocks/fluids as well as intersecting structural/fluid pathways that could have transported mineralising fluids into domains of contrasting rocks/fluids where there was potential for physicochemical gradients to precipitate metals. Ferric and ferrous iron contents and white mica abundance were useful mineral criteria to identify theMount Dore Granite of theWilliams-Naraku Batholith as a potential source of æoxidisedÆ fluids rich in Fe, K and potentially Cu-Au. The Mount Dore Shear Zone (MDSZ) intersects the western margin of this granite with the highest contents and changes in composition of the white mica are peripheral to this contact within the granite. This together, with the fact that the entire N-S length of the MDSZ in the study area (~16 km) is abundant in white mica are evidence of K-rich fluids had preferentially moved along this pathway. To the south, the MDSZ intersects a domain comprising massive ironstone bodies as well as numerous graphitic horizons. This interpreted æreducedÆ domain is well mapped using the æopaqueÆ mineral products, as well as by white mica, which is pervasively developed and extends 2 km either side of the MDSZ fault into the meta-sedimentary sequences. The chemistry of this white mica also changes progressively away from the MDSZ, becoming more Si-rich (longer wavelength) towards the contact with massive ironstone bodies in the west and the graphitic units in the east, both of which represent sites of known Cu-Au mineralisation. Beyond these contact zones of interpreted æoxidised fluidsÆ with reduced rocks/fluids, there is either a rapid change to Si-poor white mica and/or no white mica developed, ie major æchemicalÆ gradient change. These mineral mapping results provide evidence for a direct link between possible source rocks and sites of IOCG metal deposition as well as extending the associated alteration zonation which had previously been mapped/published at the metre-scale to the kilometre-scale. CRONIMET Australia in cooperation with Speciality Metals International, the mining lease holder of the Mt Carbine Tungsten mine, have demonstrated the preconcentration and processing of large (>12 million tonnes) tailings and mine waste dumps on site in far north Queensland. The first stage of this project has proven the economic viability of preconcentration using sensor-based particle sorting whilst ensuring high recovery of industry critical tungsten minerals – wolframite and scheelite. Sensor-based sorting technology have enabled the production of a sorter product to feed the existing wet gravity plant ensuring higher recoveries and increasing concentrate production. Processing of 1,000 tonne low grade samples using the TOMRA x-ray transmission (XRT) ore sorter installed on site, has reduced the volume of material entering the downstream wet processing plant by up to 60%. The sorted 10-25mm size range produced the highest upgrade ratio (product/feed) of 24:1 and achieved sorter concentrate grade of 1.52% WO3, sorter waste grades below 0.014% WO3 and metal recoveries of up to 93.4%. The appropriately sized, barren sorter waste material is also sold as aggregate and other quarrying products and thus adding to the overall economic benefit of the project. The utilisation of the sorting technology on site has produced an economically viable project, significantly reduced capital cost, and reduced the time to market of the final tungsten concentrate. The next phase of the project includes design and installation of a larger two sorter plant capable of over 150t/h feedrate.

The grinding characteristics of quartz which is normally associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area was examined in a stainless steel laboratory size ball-mill in the presence of inorganic and organic surface active reagents. The cationic species considered were Fe3+, Cu2+ and Ca2+, and the anions were CO? and S2 as these are normally present during the process of grinding of gold ores in the region. The organic surfactants examined were K-amyl- xanthate, dodecylamine-hydrochloride and the Grinding Aid XFS-4272 manufactured by Dow Chemical The study was primarily based on an examination of the electrokinetic properties of quartz surface in the presence of the grinding reagents. Zeta potential at different reagent additions and pH values in the presence of individual reagents were examined and the corresponding grinding charcteristics determined. When only wide-spaced drilling is available, for example at concept, prefeasibility and feasibility stages, properly implemented linear estimation (including ordinary kriging) predicts grade tonnage relationships that are over-smoothed compared to final production estimates (and production). Non-linear estimation and conditional simulation are alternative geostatistical approaches that can provide more reliable estimates of the recoverable tonnage and grade from wide-spaced drilling. Non-linear estimation and conditional simulation have been rarely used on iron ore deposits. However, these techniques have had wide application in other commodities such as gold and base metals. Conditional simulation has been used in the iron ore industry (eg Guibal et al, 1997); however, its use here is outlined as a means of generating non-linear estimates, not just its use for variability and drill spacing analysis. As a rule, regardless of commodity, the decision to use non-linear geostatistics will necessitate increased skills and require more time. This decision must therefore be justified in terms of cost-benefit. Such cost-benefit analysis is not straightforward, and to help an approach for determining when linear estimates are inadequate is presented. Recommend in this paper is a well-established non-linear geostatistical approach, the global ædiscrete Gaussian modelÆ (DGM) of change of support, as a tool to establish whether moving from linear to non-linear estimates will materially improve estimate results. Also discussed is the additional use of DGM as a block model validation tool. One specific factor contributing to the lack of application of non-linear geostatistical methods in iron is the added difficulties that arise when conditional simulation and non-linear estimates are required to reproduce the numerous and often important correlations between variables in iron ore deposits. Consequently, presented in the paper is a synoptic review of non-linear estimation and simulation methodologies applicable to correlated variables.

PT FreeportÆs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) Mine is the latest block cave mine within the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS).Issues with undercutting and stress concentrations at the extraction level were experienced, leading to reduced pillar strength.The extraction level-related issues became more pronounced, leading to local panel drift collapse, in an area that was over 100 per cent extraction. A review of ground conditions, panel collapse descriptions, and factors contributing to panel collapse are presented in this paper.

This paper provides a logical approach to developing a TSF design concept through: • Identifying key properties of tailings and containment structures; • Reviewing underlying principles for effective operation; • Showing how these apply to select an appropriate TMS; and • Demonstrating how to align the TMS to site-specific constraints and TSF design. This approach follows a path of rigorous data analysis independent of discharge parameters (whether low-density slurry, paste or cake disposal) to select the most cost-effective and sustainable approach for any given material or site.

The minerals industry, as many other industries, has a wealth of indicators and a thriving æindustryÆ in their development, measurement and reporting. It is natural for this to occur for a new endeavour. However, perhaps it is time for the community concerned with minerals industry indicators to ask whether we have achieved a certain maturation whereby proliferation of indicators may be replaced by a more disciplined and constrained approach. In many natural and engineered systems, thermodynamics provides well-understood and tested constraints. Indicators that are uninterpretable in this framework are not considered acceptable. This paper provides initial evidence that such a formalism may be possible for mine sustainability. The formalism developed does not claim to have the rigour of thermodynamics. However, it does provide a first step towards formalising selection of indicators on the basis of their true comprehensibility. A set of simple equations is developed that represent the conventional five capitals (actually we use six because we separate renewable and non-renewable natural capital) and how they are linked. This is coded into a simulation model. The base equations are then used to develop a system level indicator of sustainability performance, which is asserted to be a reflection of the mineÆs reputation. We define a least sustainable state, termed æmaximum revenue mining (MRM)Æ in the system and define the degree of system sustainability as how far the system is from the MRM. We then introduce a simple mechanism whereby different actors can express differing views on the emphasis for the distance from MRM. Sustainability thereby becomes a non-unique thing that is defined by a distance from MRM and a set of preferences across the capitals.

In the humid, subtropical climatic conditions, typical of Papua New Guinean high-lands, auriferous carbonate-quartz lodes and stockwork veins of the Upper Ridges mine at Wau, have weathered in situ forming manganese dioxide-quartz wad flatmakes and veins. Vein assemblages and sulphidized host breccia have been chemically weathered to 20-25m depth, and microscopic grains of electrum (550-600 fine) formerly enclosed in carbonate, sulphide and quartz have dissolved in the oxidizing alkaline fluid. Coarse secondary electrum, crystalline and dendritic, is concentrated by manganese dioxide and at the base of chemical weathering. Fineness is unchanged, eliminating the possibility of gold and silver migration as a chloride complex. Experimental tests on the stability of thiosulphate, and its ability to dissolve gold and silver from colloid, crystal and synthetic alloy confirm that secondary electrum at Upper Ridges is most compatible with precipitation from (Au,Ag)(S203)23-; a complex readily destabilized in the presence of MnO., or with decreasing Eh.

The need to continue the development of the Ensham mine has led to blast up to 75 m to the Eastern side of a water dam in the vicinity of Ramp 23. The water dam wall is exposed to blasting over a distance of approximately 500 m. The first decision was to determine that the existing rock pillar between the Eastern side of the water dam and the blasting operations may not be less than 75 m in order to minimise the damage that the blast could generate to the dam wall. It was also necessary to define blasting practices to minimising the blast damage to the rock properties of the dam wall and to avoid adverse effects from vibration and gases generated by the detonation on structures.For this purpose analytical designs and test blasts were conducted to assess the ground vibration attenuation within the rock pillar. From this analysis, it was concluded that the best practice to reduce the rock damage was to create a zone of fractured rock adjacent to the side of each production blast. This fractured zone would create an effective filter both for vibration and for gases generated by the blast. This zone of fractured rock was created by firing two buffer rows. In terms of pattern size and powder factor the two buffer rows were designed just to generate a fractured rock zone. To date approximately 500 m have been excavated along the eastern wall of the water dam where each production blast was preceded by a Trim blast. This practice has given good results with regard to minimising the damage generated by production blasting.

More than 200 bursts in coal occurred at Leichhardt Colliery prior to December 1978 during mine development in the 6 m thick Gemini seam at depths approximating 400 m. Three large bursts each displaced more than 300 tonnes of coal and stone. Two of these which occurred in continuous miner developments, are described and compared. Geological settings, mining strains including induced cleavage and roof failures associated with bursts are described. A shotfiring technique replaced mechanised mining following a major incident at the colliery. Present mining procedures, the apparent improvement in stability of workings and ongoing geotechnical monitoring programme are discussed.

Proterozoic gold deposits in the Pine Creek Geosyncline are at present receiving renewed attention with the opening of old mines and several new discoveries. This important polymetallic province contains occurrences of gold, base metals, tin, tungsten, tantalum, platinum, palladium and aluminium. These resources have been exploited over the past century with periods of major interest during the turn of the century and during the past 20 years. Economically viable resources of predominantly gold, eg Pine Creek, Woolwonga, Brocks Creek and Union Reefs, and Ag-Pb-Zn, eg Woodcutters are currently in development or being mined. A variety of genetic models, ranging from magmatic through hydrothermal to syngenetic, have been postulated in the past for the formation of gold deposits in the Pine Creek Geosyncline. The first discussion on the regional geological factors that control ore deposition in the Brocks Creek-Howley District was by Sullivan and Iten (1952). They recognised that the most important ore deposits are associated with anticlinal and domal structures and that granites may be a controlling factor in the localisation of the mineralisation. More recently a group of authors, Needham and Roarty (1980), Goulevitch (1980), Nicholson and Eupene (1984), Sanger-Von Oepen, Friedrich and Kater, (1988), Nicholson and Eupene (1990) and Kruse, Whitehead and Mulder (1990) have suggested an exhalitive syngenetic origin, or remobilised syngenetic during dolerite intrusion and/or regional deformation, for gold mineralisation, especially those associated with South Alligator Group lithologies (eg Bridge Creek, Mt Bonnie group of mines and Cosmopolitan Howley). Studies carried out at the Bridge Creek and Western Arm Prospects over the last three years suggest that syngenetic models for gold mineralisation are less relevant to gold mineralisation in the Howley District than first thought (Wall, 1989; Partington, 1990). The Bridge Creek prospect has been cited as an example of a syngenetic-syngenetic remobilised deposit (Oepen, Friedrich and Kater, 1988) while the Western Arm prospect is more clearly a vein hosted epigenetic deposit and a comparison of the styles of mineralisation at both prospects will be made. The nature of the gold mineralisation at both prospects will be described and compared, and possible genetic models for gold mineralisation and their relevance to regional exploration discussed.

The advances in computerised processors and digital microscopic imaging have enabled more studies that attempt to quantify textural information from rock images. However, a texture classification system designed for geometallurgy has always been challenging, as it combines general image analysis techniques and specific texture classifications in terms of the size, shape and orientation of mineral particles. In this paper, a novel texture analysis technique using grey level radial shell association (GLRSA) and spectral angle mapper (SAM) to discriminate between different geological images is outlined. The technique can be applied in routine analysis and characterisation of mineralogical and textural attributes which may correlate with variability in mineral processing behaviours. Using this texture analysis technique, a set of small texture reference images, a texturelet reference library, has been identified from a suite of drill core images. Rock types are classified according to the proportion of each texturelet type recognised. The library is site specific.CITATION:Nguyen, K, 2013. The green energy transition is expected to require a range of valuable minerals, which could be supplied through deep-sea polymetallic nodule mining. Deep-sea polymetallic nodules are mineral deposits with a composition well suited to produce lithium batteries, which are expected to be a necessary energy storage solution (Diouf and Pode, 2015; Paulikas et al, 2020) for the energy transition. By 2050 the annual demand for both cobalt and lithium is estimated to increase by around 450 per cent from 2018 levels (Hund et al, 2023), with the annual demand for nickel being greater than 2 million tons, and copper greater than 1 million tons. Polymetallic nodule mining is well positioned to provide these minerals in the near future. An intricate and comparatively unexplored ecosystem thrives within and surrounding the nodule fields (Smith et al, 2008). Deep-sea mining operations have the potential to disrupt and permanently damage this ecosystem through introduced pollution, artificial noise and light, and habitat destruction. Hence, there is a pressing need for new engineering and scientific endeavours to focus on developing new technologies to reduce any environmental impact from mining.

The geographical and geological situations of the two mineral sand deposits currently being mined by Western Titanium Limited and the mining methods in use are briefly described. Production scheduling involving the ability to vary the proportions of the major minerals produced, together with maintaining a constant feed grade to the wet concentrator has been assuming greater importance to the company in recent years as the relative value of these minerals, due mainly to technological advances and environmental considerations, is subject to significant and rapid change. Manual calculation, even using a programmable calculator, became a trade-off between man hours and data usage. Schedules were updated infrequently and only a fraction of the avail- able data was used. In July 1975 a Data General NOVA 2/10 minicomputer with a 24K word core and three cassette drives was purchased. A suite of programmes was developed using BASIC to assist in production scheduling and these were opera- tional early in 1976.

Project Controls cost and scheduling systems provide the Leaders with timely information on which to base their decisions.The Client (Owner) will invest up to three per cent of the project cost on Project Controls. To ensure that this investment is effective, the Owner or Manager must have a clear understanding of the information required from the Project controls systems. If appointing a single Managing Contractor, the Owner or Manager must stipulate what is and what is not required from the Project Controls Systems. There are numerous computer programs available for scheduling and cost control and it is important to select systems which best serve the Owner's needs.

Lihir Gold Mine is situated in a dormant volcanic caldera on a small island off PNG. Not æextinctÆ but dormant. Current ground temperatures are up to 150 degrees Celsius with active geysers in the workings of the mine, pools of boiling ground water adjacent to low-grade dumps and hydrogen sulphide gas emissions. It is a unique mining environment by world standards. This paper will deal with the following issues encountered and managed by the operation:blasting in hot and reactive ground; management of sulphide gas emissions; disposal at sea of all mining waste rock; one dear to all Australian minerÆs hearts û dealing with landowner groups; and unusual human resource issues.

Analysis of mechanical size fractions of soils around the Paddington deposit (W.A.) and the Charters Towers Goldfields (Queensland) shows a bimodal gold distribution, with enrichment in the coarsest and finest fractions; this is probably a common feature of soils in arid terrains. To establish the true distribution of Au within the soil fractions, the effect of bulk Au content and percent weight variations in size fractions can be reduced by a normali- zing procedure. The greatest extent of lateral dispersion of Au recorded in the -125 ¦m fraction at Paddington and the -63 ¦m in the Charters Towers area as compared to the coarser fractions, and increas- ed levels of sample representivity in the finer fractions, favours their use in exploration. If orientation studies indicate the preferen- tial use of coarse or intermediate fractions, only wet sieving can quantitatively dis- aggregate the clays and remove finer contamina- ting material. The collection of extremely fine fractions such as the -63 ¦m is also accelerated by wet sieving. The additional costs of wet sieving may be offset by better interpretation of results through increased analytical sample representivity, anomaly contrast and continuity.

The sulfur distribution ratio (Ls) is an expression of the amount of sulfur in slag to the amount of sulfur in molten metal. The sulfide capacities calculated from Reddy-Blander (RB) model were used to calculate the sulfur distribution ratio (Ls). A new Reddy model for sulfur distribution ratio (Ls) was developed for modelling Ls for ironmaking, steelmaking, and secondary steelmaking conditions. Besides calcium oxide, the major component in the ladle furnace (LF) slags is alumina. The Ls was calculated for typical LF slags as a function of temperature and composition. The model calculated Ls values are in good agreement with the experimental and industrial slags data. The extremely low oxygen potential in these furnaces after fully-killed steel is favourable for desulfurisation. For any given slag’s composition and temperature, its sulfide capacity can be calculated a priori. The equilibrium sulfur distribution ratio between this slag and liquid metal in a particular vessel can also be calculated a priori. The Ls for ladle furnace (LF) slags is about twice those for blast furnaces (BF) slags and ten times those of basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slags. The desulfurisation of pig iron in BF and desulfurisation of steel in LF during secondary steelmaking are recommended. Steel desulfurisation in steelmaking furnaces is not effective. Since the model used to calculate the sulfur distribution ratio (Ls) is a priori, it is a useful tool for the iron and steel makers in improving the product quality and optimisation of the industrial furnace operations.
