Safescape Laddertube provides an improved system for emergency egress in ventilation shafts. The addition of Laddertube in a rise has very little impact on ventilation flow, studies have indicated that the difference in flow velocities are difficult to measure due to the minimal impact. Due to the size and open-ended nature of Laddertube, the air velocity inside and out of the Laddertube is mostly linear. Laddertube can be used either permanently or during an emergency as a secondary ventilation duct. One project involved a 385 m ladder installed in a surface return air raise that could be made to bypass the primary circuit and supply fresh air to a sea container fresh air base at the bottom of the raise. Laddertube has been designed to be installed to any feasible length and can be fitted with a climb assist system ensuring enhanced speed and reduced fatigue during ascent. The climb assist used in association with Laddertube is a Tractelift system which applies a weight relief of up to 36 kg off the climber’s body weight when using the ladder. This system has successfully been tested for ladders up to 600 m in length and is currently in use for a ladder of 185 m length. The use of refuge chambers in underground coalmines has long been a contentious issue due to the concern that while it may provide temporary shelter, the risk of being exposed to high heat or the inability for rescuers to access them due to fire or explosive atmosphere means that they may be effectively trapped. The additional application for coal environments includes Laddertube installed alongside a refuge chamber concealed behind a blast proof door ensuring a secondary means of emergency egress. In certain operations designs may allow for this chamber to be provided withpositive pressure fresh air.

A very sensitive high-speed two-colour pyrometer was built to measure the temperature of single particles of sulphide mineral, typi- cally 50 pm in diameter, as they burnt while entrained in a hot gas stream. The pyrometer has been used to study the burning of pyrite and chalcopyrite particles and has thrown light on cenosphere formation. Measured maxi- mum temperatures have been compared with values predicted by diffusion-based models. The pyrometer has also been used to study the burning of small captive pellets (2-9 mmm dia- meter) of lead-zinc concentrate.

The first 12 m diameter rakeless thickener in the Australian gold mining industry was installed to treat plant tailings at the St Ives gold plant in April 2000. The plant processes approximately 3.2 M tonnes of ore producing about 430 000 oz of gold per annum using conventional crushing, grinding, gravity and carbon in pulp processing methods.The main benefit sought from the thickener was to improve water recovery in the plant and provide water for a 55 000 oz per annum heap leach operation. The thickener design indicated that more than 128 m3/h of overflow water could be returned directly into the plantÆs water circuit, relieving the demand on the borefields. The resultant surplus in the water circuit would then be available for the heap leach project. Based on laboratory and pilot plant scale tests conducted by EIMCO the thickener was designed to handle up to 700 m3/h of tailings slurry (450 tph of solids) with a 40 per cent oxide component in the ore blend. The normal plant throughput is 565 m3/h of slurry (400 tph of solids). Gold mineralisation in most areas at St Ives comprises quartz-sulphide vein and breccia lodes with common albite-biotite-chlorite alteration assemblages. There are well developed supergene gold horizons in the clay-oxide profile above most of the deposits (Osborne, 2002). This results in a wide variety of ore types being treated. At times 40 - 50 per cent of the ore may be oxide in nature. After some commissioning difficulties associated with instrumentation, the thickener has performed satisfactorily although it has not reached its design capacity. The maximum density achieved under normal operating conditions with 20 per cent oxide ore is about two per cent below the design. The thickenerÆs performance deteriorates further with increasing amounts of oxide ore in the blend. The thickener has provided sufficient water for the successful operation of the heap leach and has also provided some down stream benefits for the gold plant by way of pH and cyanide conditioned thickener overflow water.

Marcobre SAC (Marcobre) is developing the Mina Justa copper mine project, located in the Ica region of Peru. The Mina Justa IOCG orebody comprises of a sulfide mass overlain by an oxide cap with a sharp transitional zone between the sulfide and oxide masses. The primary target metal is copper, but there are minor amounts of gold and silver. The oxide will be treated by HPGR, crushing and vat leaching, whereas the sulfide will be treated by HPGR, milling and froth flotation. The processing selections are due to some unusual ore characteristics which have required relatively unconventional solutions.Vat leaching was chosen over heap leaching and other processes after detailed trade-off studies found it to be the most attractive, primarily due to the high acid consumption of the ore. The sulfide flotation produces a wide range of concentrate grades due to the complex nature of the mineralogy. The selection of HPGR circuits for both the oxide and sulfide ore is due to the extremely hard and competent nature of the deposit. The Boddington Gold Mine (BGM) is managed by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd (Worsley) and is located 110 km south-east of Perth, Western Australia. The gold mine, which has operated since mid-1987, was originally constructed to treat 3 Mtpa of gold bearing oxide ores, has subsequently been expanded to treat 7 Mtpa and is presently one of the largest gold producing operations in Australia.During 1990 a Supergene/Basement Plant was constructed to treat 250 000 tpa of copper supergene and hypogene ores and basement ores which contain significant gold grades and which are encountered at the lower levels of the existing oxide orebody. The SupergeneBasement Plant has the versatility to treat a wide range of ore types, producing both gold bullion and copper-gold concentrates. It is a stand-alone facility adjacent to the existing 7 Mtpa gold plant.

Mining has played a significant role in human development and without the mining sector, society would not enjoy a large number of the benefits that it does today. However, mining has also carried with it some important lessons, which remain the source of ongoing learning. One of these lessons is the poor closure or abandonment of mines, worldwide. This has in many cases resulted in large tracts of unproductive land, representing a source of environmental pollution and a safety hazard to the community. Frequently associated with this is a legacy of mining communities having fallen into economic and social decline, beyond mine closure.Due to this legacy, governments, society and the mining sector pay far greater attention to mine closure planning today, than was done in the past. Typically closure planning has focused on the engineering aspects of a mine, namely decommissioning of the workings and plant; dismantling of unusable infrastructure; and rehabilitation of disturbed land. These are important aspects of closure but a more holistic, long-term approach is required which encompasses environmental and social aspects and aims to leave a positive legacy behind.In planning for a mine closure scenario with a lasting positive legacy, it is critical that the broader receiving environments (social, economic, physical and biological) within which a mine is located, define and drive the closure plan and the mine planning as a whole. This ensures that the broader environment influences mine closure, as opposed to looking at how a closed mine will impact on the environment. The ultimate aim is to first understand the broader environment and then to fit the closure of a mine into it. The earlier this approach is followed in the life of a mine, the greater the operational time frame available, and hence a better chance is presented for planning and managing a mine towards the desired, tested and agreed post closure scenario. Within this broad context, there is tremendous scope to achieve successful mine closure. However, it is critical to note that mine closure is not the sole responsibility of the mining companies, and neither is it possible for said mining companies to achieve mining closure alone. This concerted effort requires a multi-stakeholder approach in which partnerships are created and risks, responsibilities and opportunities are shared and managed. To achieve sustainable closure, a multi-stakeholder approach based on an initial forward-looking closure vision is required. This approach provides an early basis for consideration of alternative land uses and economic options from which specific actions to achieve the preferred option can be defined. The Anglo American plc Mine Closure Toolbox has been formulated and developed around this concept. The Toolbox aims to expand mine closure planning - from financial provisioning for rehabilitation and physical closure, to planning for sustainability beyond mine closure and leaving behind a positive legacy.This paper focuses on the business case for mine closure planning and provides an overview of the Anglo American plc (AAplc) Mine Closure Toolbox.CITATION:Botha, P R, 2012. A range of explosives has been specifically developed for soft ground blasting. These explosives can be used in both wet and dry blasting conditions, range in density from 0.3 - 1.2 g/cc and range in VoD from 2 - 4.5 km/s. This range of explosives has the potential to be tailored to ground type and is predicted to be suitable for a variety of applications which include: blasting in soft to medium overburden, coal blasting, wall control, and low vibration blasting. Trials have been conducted in several applications with encouraging results. Several cast/throw blasts have been conducted with these products partially replacing either ANFO or Heavy ANFO. The results from the blast have been equivalent in cast (per cent) and at reduced cost per unit volume. These products have also been used in presplit blasting and have again achieved equivalent or better results when compared to conventional presplit blasting at a lower cost per unit volume. This product has also been used in a vibration sensitive area replacing traditional explosive products, and generating excellent fragmentation and digging whilst maintaining vibration limits. This new range of products, NOVALITE, has shown great potential in many applications either reducing cost per unit volume, improving wall quality or improving productivity in environmentally sensitive areas.

Mining epitomises the challenge of sustainable development, because few sectors have such a direct impact on the natural environment, yet few are more important to the economic and social health of almost every region in the globe. In a global industry, with increasing competition for exploration and mining investment dollars, sustainable development must also be resolved within an international competitiveness framework. In formulating a response to the challenge of sustainable development, the State and Federal Governments do not fully appreciate the extent to which technology drives the solution on a range of issues. In some cases` a dangerous fatalism about the state of science has led to an unhealthy æstop productionÆ attitude that puts our industry and economy at risk. As a technical institute representing the professionals in the minerals sector, The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM) sees one of its roles as being to highlight the way in which industry innovation can facilitate solutions. The AusIMM is currently evolving a greenhouse gas emissions policy. As a case study it throws into sharp relief the way in which irresponsible ælimits to growthÆ policies could have a negative impact on the sustainability of the sector, as well as the importance of a technology- based solution. With 80 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions in the next twenty years projected to come from developing economies, such as India and China, major reductions will only be achieved if cost-effective, low emissions energy technologies are deployed in developing countries, and more energy efficient processes of producing key commodities for them are brought online. As a supplier of the key energy resources and materials that will be in high demand to feed developing economies, and with knowledge intensive industries with excellent R&D links across mining and manufacturing, Australia is well positioned to contribute to develop key low emissions technologies. However, we will only be able to take advantage of this position if the Federal Government commits to a holistic greenhouse emissions policy that does not penalise industry. We need effective æpushÆ polices aimed at leveraging investment in low emissions R&D that are closely linked in to æpullÆ policies aimed at stimulating technology uptake.

Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary coals in the Greymouth, Ohai and Kaitangata coalfields represent a major national energy resource comprising-up to 2500 x 106 tonnes of coal in ground. The three coalfields are closely related in terms of age and sedimentary and structural character. The most striking feature common to all is the complexity of the geology which has severely restricted exploration and mining of these coal resources. This complexity is manifest in the irregular lensoid nature of coal seams and by the incidence of unpredictable medium and small scale faulting and folding. There are many geological similarities between these coalfields which are considered to arise from a common origin which can be related to the plate tectonic evolution of the southwest Pacific region. In order to efficiently assess and exploit these coal resources it will be necessary to know their geology in great detail. This can he achieved by increasing the understanding of the sedimentary and structural evolution of the coal bearing basins. This knowledge may be gained by the application of traditional (ie drilling, field mapping) and innovative techniques (ie high resolution seismic, in seam seismic) with on going research-oriented studies (ie basin analysis, coal petrography).

The German mining industry uses different residues for backfilling and stowing. A hydraulic pipe conveying technology for these materials has shown advantages for the transportation into the mine. Pipeline conveying systems are able to bridge long distances, they save room within the underground workings and they save staff and costs. Absolutely necessary for successful use of the hydraulic conveying technology is the knowledge about the unusual non-Newtonian flow properties of solid/liquid mixtures like pastes and slurries. The flow resistance of these materials cannot be described easily by one viscosity. Owing to a yield point and a pseudo-plastic behaviour the viscosity changes with the shear rate and with the streaming velocity inside the pipe. Also these flow behaviours depend very sensitively on the liquid/solid-ratio, often so dramatically that gravimetric or volumetric dosing equipment is not in a position to control the production of backfill pastes. Quality changes of the solid raw materials (particle size distribution, density, mineralogical composition) lead to additional difficulties. The first experiences with hydraulic backfilling plants were troubled by plugged pipes, a bad backfill quality caused by unnecessarily high water content and high costs for chemical binders to solidify the backfill. The installation of viscosity controlled paste production leads to success with the hydraulic backfill technology. A development of the DMT, a bypass pipe-viscometer, has been the key technology. The system is able to analyse on-line, difficult, sticky and abrasive substances and determine their non-Newtonian flow properties. Because the system measures real physical values it is in a position to pre-calculate process relevant parameters like the pressure drop of the backfilling paste in the conveying pipeline. Newer types of the viscometer system also measure the slurry density and calculate its composition. These systems have proven a success controlling backfill paste production plants. They offer a secure prevention of pipeline plugging and a production of high quality backfill pastes with a water content as low as possible.

The Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) and the Queensland Mines Department are engaged in integrated regional- and deposit-scale studies in the Burdekin Falls-"Conway" area, about 100km southeast of Charters Towers (Fig. 1). The regional work augments recent mapping in the Mount Coolon area farther south (Hutton et al., in prep.). These studies are aimed at improving understanding of gold mineralisation and its geological setting in the Drurunond Basin and associated rocks. Knowledge of the regional stratigraphic- structural framework and setting of mineralisation has until now been based on investigations dating from the early to mid 1960's (mainly Bowen 1:250 000 Sheet; e.g. Paine et al., 1974; Wyatt et al., 1971), and on regional syntheses (Olgers, 1972; Levingston, 1981). Some recently explored epithermal gold occurrences in the region have been interpreted on the basis of this early work as being hosted by the Late Carboniferous Bulgonunna Volcanics. The objective of our field research was to refine the regional geology, paying particular attention to the Bulgonunna Volcanics. The results summarised here indicate that unnamed Devonian-Carboniferous volcanics (DCv) of the northern Drummond Basin and mid to late Palaeozoic granitoids are much more extensive, and the Bulgonunna Volcanics much less so, than was previously recognised.

There are various methods currently in use to determine detonation performance of bulk explosive products including velocity of detonation (VOD), high speed photographic analysis, fragmentation analysis and unconfined detonation of samples. For assessment prior to detonation the current practice is limited to a measurement of cup density. This paper presents additional techniques that have been developed to provide measurement and assessment of bulk explosive products. Techniques applicable prior to detonation include a mobile laboratory to allow on-site chemical and physical analysis of sensitised products and ‘in-hole density’ measurement to monitor the in-hole density during sleep time. Assessment of detonation performance is achieved using detonation pressure sensors. These sensors allow measurement of detonation pressure, average VOD, propagation time and magnitude of the pressure induced in the explosive column by detonation of adjacent blastholes.CITATION:Cavanough, G, Torrance, A C, Rock, J and Olsson, A, 2015. The JORC Code does not specify a definition for ælevel of confidenceÆ. The common approach in the mining industry is to use a certain drill spacing or number of data samples to classify resources by the confidence categories. Another approach includes application of the quantitative geostatistical criteria for non-subjective and consistent definition of the resource categories. This approach, which has become increasingly popular in the mining industry, provides a quantitative measure of the resource estimation uncertainty. In this study, uncertainties associated with the different drilling grids at the Weipa bauxite deposit (Queensland, Australia) have been modelled using conditional simulation methodology. Criteria used at Weipa for defining resource categories are as follows: mineralisation can be classified as a Measured Resource if tonnage and grade of its volume representing three months of production can be estimated with a precision error not exceeding ¦10 per cent (at 95 per cent probability, ie two standard deviations); and mineralisation can be classified as an Indicated Resource if grade and tonnage of its volume representing annual production can be estimated with a precision error not exceeding ¦10 per cent (at 95 per cent probability). Several different grids have been created by subsampling the drill hole database. The studied variables include Al2O3, SiO2, thickness of the bauxite seam and location of the footwall contact. The variables have been modelled by sequential Gaussian simulation. Based on this study the following drill spacings have been recommended: Measured Resources û 150 m by 150 m, Indicated Resources û 300 m by 300 m.

The Legacy Way Tunnel was constructed from Toowong to Kelvin Grove in Brisbane, and is the first large-scale underground excavation in the Bunya Phyllite in Brisbane. The Legacy Way Tunnel is 4.3 km in length, comprising two mainline tunnels excavated by a tunnel boring machine (TBM) with 46 connecting passages excavated between the mainline tunnels for egress provision and services. The Legacy Way Tunnel passes through two geological formations, the Bunya Phyllite and the Neranleigh Fernvale Beds. The Bunya Phyllite is the dominant formation of the Legacy Way Tunnel, extending for three quarters of the tunnel prior to intersecting the Normanby Fault Zone (NFZ) and the Neranleigh Fernvale Beds. The NFZ forms the contact between the two formations as part of the Brisbane Metamorphics, which underlies the majority of Brisbane City. The development of the geological model and the understanding of the ground’s reaction to tunnelling was an iterative process. The tender phase investigation data has been supplemented with additional design phase investigation boreholes, geophysics and walk overs. Aerial photograph interpretation coupled with borehole data allowed the development of the domains along the length of the tunnel. Early excavations for the spoil conveyor tunnel and borehole data from subsurface instrumentation installation provided the first construction phase data followed by the commencement of tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavation. Routine cutterhead inspections coupled with ongoing reviews of the predicted geology resulted in clear response triggers to selection of segment types while detailed inspections in passage locations provide the initial classifications for segment removals.CITATION:Bennett, C and Norbert, M, 2014. This paper has been developed for æThe Race for SpaceÆ conference. It ranges over various aspects, all of which are within the umbrella of marketing. The question is posed because many engineers, tunnelling and other specialisations, frequently demonstrate an unwillingness to embrace marketing. The accurate reply is probably à ænot an engineer!Æ The paper identifies some of the possible explanations for this reply. The vast majority of the themes, ideas and principles are based on more than 25 years actual experience for the author with Engineers, Tunnelling and other disciplines. This experience has been gained with leading consulting engineering practices; some of the worldÆs largest construction contractors together with other organisations employing engineers in the public, private and tertiary sectors in the UK; US; Europe; the Middle East and throughout Australia and New Zealand. Experience has been gained in design offices; head offices and construction job sites in four contrasting continents. With their commitment to sustainable development in an increasingly carbon-constrained world, many resources companies are focused on reducing the energy required to create their final products. In particular, the comminution and smelting of metal-bearing ores are both highly energy-intensive processes. If resource companies can optimise the energy efficiency across these two processing stages, they can directly reduce their overall energy consumption per unit mass of metal produced and thus reduce their greenhouse gas footprint. Traditional grinding and flotation models seek to improve the efficiency of mineral processing, but they do not consider the energy used by downstream metal production, eg smelting and refining. Concentrators and smelters individually may be running efficiently, but are they optimising energy consumption of the overall system? A key step towards answering this question is to understand whether it takes less energy to remove an impurity in the concentrator or the smelter. Analysis of the complete concentrator û smelter process chain may show that there are times when the concentrator should use more energy to reduce the overall energy requirements across the mill and smelter. The new methodology discussed here will integrate downstream processing energy with mineral processing energy, to find the overall most energy efficient circuit design and operating strategy. The proposed methodology includes: determining what grade and recovery positions can be achieved in the concentrator by using different combinations and amounts of grinding and regrinding, thermodynamic calculations of the energy used to process the different concentrate grades to metal, and integrating the concentrating and smelting models to find the lowest total energy for the system. A case study which investigates the effect of increasing regrinding energy on the overall mineral processing û smelting energy consumption is presented. For the copper-nickel sulfide ore investigated the addition of regrinding results in 11 per cent less energy being used in the overall concentrator û smelter process chain per tonne of metal produced. Although regrinding is often seen as an energy-intensive process, in this case study the use of 1 kWh of energy for regrinding reduces the overall energy consumption by 12 kWh. The new mill to melt methodology will allow companies to model energy consumption from mill to smelter with a view to reducing the energy-intensity and greenhouse gas footprint of their processing and smelting operations.

Massive sulphide ZnPbCuAg deposits in the Halls Peak district of northeastern NSW are of the submarine volcanogenic type. They occur as a number of small lenses enclosed in shale and epiclastic rocks, in association with felsic volcanics of early Permian age. The deposits crop out in steep terrain near the eastern edge of the New England plateau. Local relief of 700 m and slopes up to 50¦, coupled with an average annual rainfall of about 1000 mm has led to local severe landsliding in previously mined areas. Mining from the 1890's to the 1960's has also resulted in unconstrained drainage of heavy metal-bearing acid waters and physical dispersion of finer grained metalliferous sediments into the Chandler River. Waters emanating from the main landslide area, from underground workings and draining scattered unconfined stockpiles of massive sulphide ore have pH values of 3 to 4 and contain elevated contents of Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd and Fe. Chemical mobility of heavy metals into streams occurs under low pH conditions with Zn exhibiting the greatest dispersion. Increasing pH conditions downstream cause precipitation of Fe phases and coprecipitation of heavy metals. Physical dispersion of secondary metal-bearing minerals into the surrounding creeks results in wt% levels of Cu, Pb and Zn in the stream sediments thereby exceeding the regional background values by one to three orders of magnitude. Areas disturbed by mining are characterised by lack of vegetation, biomagnification of heavy metals into algae and lower plants, and partial recolonisation by metal-tolerant grass species (Snow Grass, Poa sieberana; Blady Grass, Lomandra longifolia). Rehabilitation measures will have to include landslide stabilisation, impervious sealing or removal of sulphidic materials, import of topsoil and revegetation by metal-tolerant, slow-growing native grass and shrub species.

Blastholes fired in a pattern with a constant initiation delay create a frequency in the ground vibration similar to that from a percussion instrument, such as a drum, in the air. A constant firing delay generates a prime or forcing frequency into the ground motion. The forcing frequency may then be modified by ground transmission characteristics into subharmonics of the forcing frequency. The moving vibration source between blastholes also creates a frequency shift because of a Doppler effect. Other wave interactions may form beats. The effects are exacerbated by the accurate firing times of electronic detonators. This paper demonstrates how observations of wavetraces and frequency spectral analysis were used to recognise:Doppler effect and frequency ellipsoidssubharmonics (and sub-subharmonics) of the forcing frequencybeat formation that may double or triple peak particle velocity (PPV) levels.Recognition of beats permitted techniques to be used to control ground vibration from coal overburden blasting to limits deemed to cause no further instability in a slip failure. Drill and blast (D&B) is one of the most important production operations in open pit mining. The resulting fragmentation of the D&B reflects in the downstream unit operation. Good fragmentation of the ore will minimise the cost of loading, hauling and crushing. The understanding of the geological model integrated with a software system for bench face surveying and planning of blast layouts based on three-dimensional images can help to achieve the fragmentation goals of the mine operation. A case study integrating these tools was carried out in a large iron mine in Brazil. The iron ore in the study area consists of hard and friable itabirites. More than three different ore types may occur on the same bench. Under these conditions, data integration becomes necessary to improve the results of blasting. A blasting plan was based on the generated geological model. The methodology helps understanding the factors that can interfere in the fragmentation process, allowing defining actions that can improve the blast design in those places that fragmentation wasn’t achieved. This condition is important for a continuous improvement of the drilling and blasting operation.
