"It has long been recognised that the barometer infl uences areas of underground coal mines that havebeen sealed off from the current, or active, mine workings but it appears litt le formal research hasbeen done on how the barometer aff ects the goafstream sample point. Based on statistical analysis of samples from a number of mines from Queensland and New South Wales it can be concluded that there is a direct correlation between the barometer and oxygen concentration at a goafstream sample point. To help mitigate some of the high consequence hazards within the underground coal industry and protect the health and safety of the persons within that environment, many monitoring tools are utilised. A control recognised in management plans prescribed under New South Wales and Queensland legislation is the need to conduct monitoring to identify the early warning signs of spontaneous combustion. One of the monitoring tools utilised involves a bagsample being collected from a goafstream sample point then returned to the surface for analysis.When the sample is incorrectly collected, the resultant analysis from a gas chromatograph provides litt le value to the persons charged with the obligation of operating the coal mine at an acceptable level of risk. This, therefore, increases the probability of spontaneous combustion leading to a loss of equipment, mine and in the worst case, life. When the sample is collected correctly, the analysis presents early warning signs of low level oxidation allowing corrective action to be taken, to prevent the oxidation accelerating to spontaneous combustion. The eff ect the barometer has on this sample point should be recognised and the knowledge imparted to persons who conduct sampling to remove a variable in the bag sample collection process. This will ensure the persons operating the mine have a bett er understanding of what is happening within their longwall goaf."

Braeside Borefield, located 120 km southwest of Mackay, is owned by BHP Mitsui Coal Pty Ltd (BHP Mitsui). The borefield provides water to BHP MitsuiÆs South Walker Creek and Riverside Coal Mines and communities in the northern portion of the Bowen Basin. Braeside Borefield has also provided water for other users in the region, including the Peak Downs, Goonyella and Saraji Coal Mines owned by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA). Water is sourced from alluvial sediments at the confluence of Nebo and Denison Creeks, and transferred a distance of almost 100 km to Riverside Mine and other users. Since commissioning in 1983, monitoring and maintenance programs have been key elements in borefield management. The impact of pumping on groundwater resources is monitored at the borefield, upstream and downstream over a distance of about 50 km. Current annual pumping is of the order of 4000 ML, and in excess of 50 000 ML has been pumped since the commencement of borefield operations. Detailed reviews of borefield performance are conducted every two years. BHP Mitsui actively participates in community consultation on groundwater issues arising from operation of the borefield. Declining groundwater levels from prolonged drought conditions have increased community interest in management of the borefield. Rehabilitation of existing production bores and augmentation of the borefield is currently being investigated to more evenly distribute pumping rather than to increase overall capacity.

Exploration requires substantial capital, and is an extremely risky business (only 1 in 100 prospects ever becomes a mine). The average lead time, that is the time between discovery and production, varies from around two years for a gold mine, to 15 years for a lead/zinc mine. Since it takes years to find, prove and develop most ore bodies, exploration must be carried out years ahead of the depletion of existing deposits. Investors in exploration are exposed to risk for long periods before knowing whether they will receive a return on the funds invested. The risk, high-cost, uncertainty and long lead times involved in exploration make it an aspect of commerce that most managers and investors find difficult to rationalise or understand. Nevertheless, it is a given that the long-term survival of the mining sector depends on discovery of new mineral deposits, however the immediacy of the need to find or acquire new mineral deposits in order to compete and prosper in the industry is less well understood. This paper examines the commercial realities which underlie exploration for new mineral deposits. The first and foremost reason for exploration is to maintain or increase depleting ore reserves which are the asset base of mining, but there are other compelling commercial reasons for exploring, and these are: to maintain return on investment, to achieve growth or create wealth through discoveries which lead tonew mining ventures, to remain competitive in the industry, to diversify, and to control raw material source for mineral processing and/ormarketing ventures. Exploration is necessary for survival of the industry, and also for survival of organisations competing in the industry. The organisations which discover the best orebodies are in the best position to compete, and mining organisations which fail to find or acquire new mineral deposits rapidly become uncompetitive and unable to maintain return on shareholdersÆ investment.

Using the cellular automata computational technique it was possible to simulate the generation and discharge of an iron ore pellet pile inside a direct iron reduction oven, as well as to calculate the reduction degree of the pellets as they leave the oven. It allows simulation of the variation of operational parameters and verify the results of those variations in the pellet reduction degree. The simulated data was validated in two instances: for the dynamics of the pellet flow inside the oven it was used in an acrylic bi-dimensional silo; and data from direct reduction iron literature was used for validation of the pellet reduction. The simulated results were considered acceptable to describe the movement of the iron pellet inside the direct reduction iron oven and to describe the iron pellet reduction direct in the oven.

Flotation surveying can be an extremely powerful means of determining opportunities for circuit optimisation and benchmarking. The type of survey employed depends heavily on the nature of the information required from the survey. It follows then that the type of survey determines the type of samples required; however, regardless of the type, the success or failure of a survey is often dependent on the correct used of appropriate sampling techniques at each sampling point. For a successful flotation plant survey it is vital that the correct samples be collected at the correct time in respect to the feed and each other. This paper discusses the current best practice sampling methods used in flotation surveying and discusses in detail the ideal sample masses based on theoretical analysis. Beneficiation of magnetite is an integral part of the future of iron ore processing. Historically, the focus of Western Australian producers has been on exporting direct shipping ore (DSO) namely haematite. The future for new DSO resources is limited so companies are changing their emphasis into processing the very large, undeveloped magnetite ores in Western Australia (WA), using beneficiation to produce shippable magnetite concentrates. These magnetite resources require higher cost processing techniques such as fine grinding and beneficiation to produce saleable concentrates. This distinct difference, from the DSO ores, has led to the development of a number of new technologies. This paper reviews: the different techniques used for magnetite beneficiation and provides some case studies in the WA industry; the use of mineral liberation analysis (MLA) to describe the nature, grain size, occurrence and associations of the mineralisation;the consideration of coarse cobbing as a critical upgrading; the application of high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) to save energy; how the field of magnetic separation has resulted in new machines with higher field strength (SLon Separators); ultra fine grinding requirements of magnetite concentrates; andthe application of reverse flotation to reduce silica in the concentrates.

Collaboration between CSIRO Minerals and SunSalt Pty Ltd, a salt producing company located in rural Victoria, has resulted in a commercial process to recover magnesium sulfate (commonly called Epsom salt) from the saline waters of the Murray Basin. The feed for this process is bittern; the liquor remaining after halite (common salt) has been harvested from the saline water by evaporation.SunSalt produces salt and bitterns from three locations, namely Hattah (Victoria), Mourquong (NSW) and Wakool (NSW). The small size and considerable distances between these operations makes it uneconomic to build a stationary processing plant to extract value-added products, in particular Epsom salt, from the bitterns of the three operations. This fact led SunSalt to build a containerised mobile plant that could be moved to each site to process the bitterns at the end of the salt harvesting period.Epsom salt is extracted from the bittern by further evaporation, refrigeration and recrystallisation. In this process the bittern is diluted with five per cent volume of fresh water to minimise precipitation of residual halite in the bittern. Cooling the diluted bittern to between -5 and -10¦C precipitates up to 70 per cent of the magnesium sulfate, which is recovered as 85 to 96 per cent purity Epsom salt by filtration. This product is marketed as an industrial grade Epsom salt. Higher purity (up to 99.9 per cent) Epsom salt (USP or BP grade refined product) is made from the industrial grade product (raw Epsom salt) by recrystallisation.The containerised mobile plant was commissioned in December 2002. The raw Epsom salt generated in the mobile plant is refined to a higher purity Epsom salt in a separate plant located in Mildura. The Mildura plant was commissioned in December 2003.The CSIRO-SunSalt collaboration has demonstrated that the saline waters can be processed into a useful resource, and in addition could create jobs and a new skill base in regional Australia. The production of Epsom salt locally in Australia, which is worth currently about $A600 per tonne, removes the need to import over 3000 tpa from overseas with a net positive impact of $A2 million on the balance of trade.

Six new IsaMills were installed for the George Fisher flowsheet in the Lead/Zinc Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines to produce a product P80 as fine as seven microns. The objective was better liberation of galena and sphalerite. The IsaMill commissioning was completed by the end of 1999. The six new IsaMills were running to the metallurgical specifications almost immediately after start-up. This paper reports the performance of the George Fisher IsaMills in the zinc circuits and some of the latest development in the IsaMill designs and maintenance during George Fisher commissioning.

The results of iron ore exploration in Western Australia between '1961 and 1964 are outlined, with particular.reference to the Hamersley Iron Province. Exploration during: these three years has increased the known resources of the-,Statle from 275 million tons to almost 9,000 million tons of high- grade hematite ore. In addition, reserves of lower-grade .pisolitic limonite ore are-estimated to amount to 6,000 million tons. The origin and characteristics of the different types of ore is discussed,

Ventilation control devices (VCD’s) and bulkheads are critical controls used for managing risk in underground coalmines. Following the Moura No. 2 mine explosion in 1994, the Queensland Mines Department required that the design of VCDs be based on live testing (such as in a mine testing explosion gallery) and more recently on numerical modelling using measured seal material properties. While the stipulated methods represent an idealistic solution, they are not practical to implement as solutions to daily challenges presented in underground coalmines.Not all VCD’s and bulkheads are placed in areas which have been mined to standard roadway dimensions. Operationally, VCD’s may be required to be placed close to intersections or require large dimensionally different areas (eg overcasts and pre-driven recovery road shutters) compared to the live testing or numerical modelling originally undertaken.This paper describes the various structural engineering methods utilised to account for the design of VCD’s where the operational requirements are non-standard. Siting and construction of VCD’s near the entry of cut throughs and geological structures requires additional design considerations. While VCDs constructed from a single material (eg sprayed mining plaster) are relatively straightforward to design, the addition of multiple openings (doors) or large pipes will complicate the structuralanalysis significantly.Temporary bulkheads used for the containment of grout such as for the construction of pre-driven recovery roads in coal mining have a significantly different risk profile to VCDs and should be designed accordingly. Recent failures and near-misses in such bulkheads have highlighted this issuefor the authors.The existence of an Australian Standard for Underground Mine VCDs and Bulkheads would go a long way to addressing many of the issues raised in this paper. Without a single, industry-accepted reference for VCD design, individual mines will have to continueto exercise their best judgements using whatever local expertise is available to them.

We conducted a preliminary assessment of an extensive deposit of historic tailings discharged over a period of 40 years to the shoreline along a Southern Peruvian coastline. The tailings formed an extensive beach approximately 2.4 km long and 300 m wide. The tailings consist principally of pyrite (37 to 59 per cent), hematite (nine to 20 per cent), magnetite (three to 13 per cent) and quartz (11 to 36 per cent). The present operating company was required to evaluate the feasibility of capping the ocean side tailings deposit, however, given the size of the undertaking and the potential to reclaim residual minerals from the tailings, it was prudent to first evaluate whether capping would in fact reduce the impacts to the marine environment. Therefore this preliminary assessment examined: 1. metals contamination in tailings, shoreline porewater and marine sediments; 2. reactivity of tailings and acid generation potential; and 3. the potential for biological effects from metal contamination in the uplands tailings (solid phase) and beach porewater. Based on mineralogy, column leach studies and chemical results, the upland tailings have a high geochemical potential to acidify and release metals, especially copper, nickel and zinc, should they be subject to oxygenated and aqueous conditions. But, the extreme arid climate results in very low potential for precipitation and virtually precludes the transport of acid drainage reaction products from the upland tailings towards ocean. Wind erosion caused by offshore winds is likely a small source of tailing transport to the ocean. Since some potential exists to reprocess the tailings in the future, capping does not seem justified at present.

Occasionally additives are used in the wet processing of iron ore tailings and slurries, for examples, in the thickening of tailings with flocculant to recover process water, and in the smooth pumping of concentrated slurries. They can mitigate slurry behavioural issues that could significantly affect the plant operation and production. The nature of iron ore business requiring the plant to have a high throughput to be economical, large amounts of slurries are therefore processed every day. The quantity of additives needed will correspondingly be large and so are the associated costs. This could have a significant impact on the plant profitability. If additives are used they must be very costeffective. NaOH is among the lowest cost chemicals available, at ~US$400 per ton. In this paper we will look at use of composite additives involving phosphate compounds with NaOH added to reduce the cost, for the control of iron ore slurries rheology. The NaOH worked synergistically with the phosphate compounds. The effectiveness of these composite additives in viscosity reduction can be neutralised by another cheap additive such as lime or a Ca(II)-based salt turning the slurries back to being a paste. Tailings paste is an ideal material for safe storage in the dam. These composite additives can also be used to facilitate the recovery of iron ore at commercial grade from tailings (Leong, 2020a, 2021a).

In this era of rising focus on the social and environmental costs and benefits of mining operations, the valuation methodologies used to assess such impacts become increasingly important. Within an industry dominated by an engineering culture that places emphasis on net present value (NPV) calculations using high discount rates, difficulties often arise when attempting to justify projects with longer-term, harder to quantify benefits. This is particularly so when these benefits fall in the social and environmental domains and involve other stakeholders. In this paper, we summarise the results of a recent literature review on this subject, which focused on the valuation of æBeyond ComplianceÆ initiatives in the mining sector. We discuss a range of approaches including the quantification of hidden internal costs, financial methods of incorporating risk into calculations, the integration of quantitative and qualitative information, and also the valuation of æexternalitiesÆ or costs and benefits borne by others. We then use a series of examples relating to the management of water in the minerals industry to illustrate how some of these approaches could be applied. There are high-level commitments from both individual companies and groups such as the ICMM to incorporate sustainable development criteria into decision-making processes within the industry. We conclude the paper by arguing that, to meet these commitments, there is a need for the industry to adopt a broader range of valuation methodologies than appears to be the case at present.

BHP World Minerals (BHP) commenced development of the Cannington exploration decline in 1993 using Peabody Resources LimitedÆs Mining Services Division (PRL) as the contractor. Approval was given in 1996 to complete the mine development and bring the mine into production in 1997. The total mine development at Cannington by PRL has included 14 km of headings, 1040 m of shaft sinking for ventilation and ore hoisting and 990 m of raise boring for ore passes and vent rises. Hard money schedule of rates contracts were used for mine development from 1993 until early-1997. This took the mine development down to 570 m below the surface and developed six levels. Because of significant risks, the final phase of the mine development was completed in 1997 under a partnering agreement. This paper examines the factors considered in making the change to partnering, the issues involved in negotiating the partnering agreement to complete the Cannington mine development and the outcomes of the agreement.

The North Fiji Basin (NFB) is delineated by the Vitiaz trench to the North (paleo sub duction zone, Brocher, 1985), the Vanuatu is- land arc (called before New Hebrides arc) to the West and South, the Hunter Fiacture Zone to the South-East and the Fiji islands to the East (Brocher, 1985 ; Larue et al., 1982 ; Carney and MacFarlane, 1982 ; Falvey, 1978). The NFB is characterized by shallow water depths (about 3 km) (Chase et al., 1982 ; Scla- ter et al., 1972 ; Karig, 1971), high heat flow (average of 2.29 HFC) (MacDonald et al., 1973 ; Halunen, 1979), strong positive free air anoma- lies (Worzel, 1965 ; Kogan, 1976 ; Luyendick et al., 1974 ; Solomon and Biehler, 1969) and a geoid anomaly (Malahoff and Larue, 1979) inter- preted as a geoid swelling. Few refraction data reveal a relatively thin crust and sediment co- ver, and the existence of low speeds in the up- per mantle beneath the NFB (between 7,1 and 7,7 km/s) (Larue et al., 1982 ; Raitt, 1956), which could indicate the existence of active spreading zone(s) in this area (Barazangi et al., 1974). Global seismicity of the SW Pacific clearly de- fines the.limits of the NFB, as well as the Lau basin (Sykes et al., 1969). But one can note the low level of shallow seismicity of the NFB (Ham- burger and Isacks, in press) which concentrates in three distinct trends :

In the ten years since the University of NSW proposed a pillar design methodology for bord and pillar operations, the Australian coal mining industry has changed substantially. What was primarily a bord and pillar design approach is now being applied to chain pillar design in longwall mines where the requirements are substantially different. The dimensions of chain pillars can impact on tailgate conditions (roof, rib and floor), seal performance, and surface subsidence. The status of chain pillar design practice in Australia is reviewed, with a focus on defining pillar strength, chain pillar loading, and assessing the performance of the roof/pillar/system. A new pillar strength equation is proposed for Australian coal that applies for all width/height ratios. An alternative analysis of probability of failure of chain pillars is presented.

An underground mine, a treatment plant and supporting facilities have been constructed at Lebong Tandai in Sumatra, Indonesia by PT Lusang Mining. Throughput is initially 50,000 tonnes per annum of ore with an inbuilt capability to expand to 100,000 tonnes per annum. Construction proceeded in parallel with design work on a tightly controlled critical path schedule. The very remote location of the mine, the difficult access and the fact that equipment was imported from many parts of the world presented a challenging project management problem. The transport system, which involves road, river and rail and support facilities on site had to be brought into full operation prior to the arrival of major equipment. Mine development involved the reopening of the old access drives and workings, refurbishing two shafts and the haulage system together with redevelopment of old stoping areas and the opening of new stoping areas. Ore production is now from three main areas using shrink and underhand stoping methods. Ore breaking and drive development is with conventional airleg mounted rockdrills and ANFO explosives. Exploration to locate and develop new reserves to replace ore mined is an ongoing activity.

Conventional geostatistical algorithms cannot reproduce bivariate complexities such as inequality constraint, nonlinearity and heteroscedasticity. Poor reproduction of these features may decrease the accuracy and reliability of mine planning results. For example, it is not unusual to have an inequality constraint between primary and disturbing elements in a metalliferous deposit. Implementation of traditional methodologies for such complex data sets can lead to the incorrect reproduction of a bivariate relationship, which will affect the validity of NPV results. In this paper, an iron data set containing iron and silica grades with an inequality constraint between variables is introduced as a case study. This study proposes an algorithm based on a hierarchical sequential Gaussian cosimulation integrated with inverse transform sampling. The proposed methodology considers the linear inequation between two variables in the hierarchical cosimulation process to reproduce an inequality constraint. As a comparison, conventional sequential Gaussian cosimulation is also applied to the same data set to demonstrate the difference in bivariate relationships from both models. Unlike the proposed algorithm, the conventional cosimulation cannot reproduce an inequality constraint and slightly overestimates silica grades. The modelled realisations are then used to assess the uncertainty of a plan and generate a stochastic strategy that adapts the destination of the blocks depending on the scenario. Two-stage stochastic long-term production scheduling takes extraction decisions using average information (ie e-type model) and ore/waste destinations based on geostatistical realisations. As a result, the proposed strategy is closer to the upper bound, highest possible NPV for each realisation, than to the lower bound, deterministic strategy that does not manage the risk of sending extracted material to wrong destinations. Furthermore, Comparing production schedules resulting from proposed and conventional geostatistical methodologies shows the importance of inequality constraint reproduction and more accurate long-term mine planning.

In non-ferrous metal mining operations, it is generally necessary to crush and grind the ore to a very fine particle size to effectively liberate the contained mineral from the host rock. Fragmentation by blasting is the first stage of this comminution process.Numerous studies and independent modelling of the Mine to Mill process have demonstrated the potential for significant downstream productivity improvements from improved blast fragmentation. However, safety and environmental constraints associated with the blasting process usually limit the extent to which blast energy or powder factor can be increased.An effective blasting solution has been identified that enables the safe utilisation of powder factors several times higher than those used conventionally to provide significant improvements in fragmentation. The solution uses a static ‘blanket’ of broken rock overlying the blast to contain this increased blast energy and control rock movement. To produce this broken layer of rock, the subdrill in each blast is significantly increased to preblast (or precondition) the entire stemming region of subsequent blasts on the next mining bench.The solution has been evaluated at a large open cut poly-metallic mine in Mexico. Results from the application of this technique have shown significant improvement in run-of-mine fragmentation, with subsequent downstream productivity improvement indicated.CITATION:Hawke, S J and Dominguez, L A, 2015. The Cawse nickel project is a new generation pressure acid leach (PAL), solvent extraction and electrowinning process used to produce LME grade nickel metal and cobalt sulphide concentrate containing 40 per cent cobalt by treating nickel and cobalt oxide ores from a lateritic ultramafic profile. The project is located 50 kilometres NW of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. The commercial success of the Cawse nickel operation is dependent in part upon the ability of the principal ore type to be beneficiated. A simple process of rejecting lower grade material on the basis of particle size achieves this. The process is called upgrading and allows subgrade material to become commercial ore grade and also allows higher ore grades to be processed in the early parts of the operation. The success of the upgrade process is dependent upon the physical and chemical properties of the ore being processed and the nickel grade of the ore. The upgrade ore type represents >80 per cent of the Cawse nickel resource and is hosted mostly within a limonite unit, represented by goethitic clays in the upper saprolite zone. In the upgrade processing circuit the ore is crushed and slurried. It is then passed over a series of screens that remove all material over 0.5 mm. This ensures that coarse material is removed from the main ore stream. Upgrade is reliant on selectively rejecting lower grade or barren material, which can include silica, magnesite and relict saprock. To predict leach feedgrade, the grade control estimates the head grade and upgrade percentage for all ore delivered to the run of mine ore pad. To do this reverse circulation (RC) drill holes are logged for ore type, assayed for a range of elements and undergo simulated upgrade testwork. The percentage and grade of material rejected through the upgrade circuit has the most influence on upgrade per cent. This reject is determined by the physical properties of the rock mass and drum scrubber parameters. The correlation between nickel upgrade and reject can be established to predict upgrade from the known mass reject. Parcels of upgrade ore milled to date closely follow projected correlation trends. Upgrade circuit results have been excellent, with average nickel grades upgrading by 34 per cent, cobalt by 23 per cent, with 55 per cent mass passing.
