The Fitzpatrick area is the deepest section of the North Mine, with the orebody located between 1450 and 1800 m below the surface and some 600 m NE of the main No. 3 Shaft orebody and separated from it by the intensely sheared Globe Vauxhall Shear Zone. Development towards the Fitzpatrick area commenced in 1977 after earlier initial exploration drive development. However, it was not until 1982 that mining in the Fitzpatrick area actually began with the silling out of No. 36 level at a depth of some 1600 in. Since that time mechanised cut and fill mining from an incline ramp system with connecting stope accesses has progressed some 25 m above No. 36 level. Initial sill development on No. 37 level at 1660 m depth also commenced in July 1987 to further develop the Fitzpatrick area.

Research cruises by HMNZS 'Tui' (1986) and RV 'Moana Wave' (1987) investigated the geology, geophysics and seafloor mineral resources of Manihiki Plateau in the central Pacific Ocean.Manihiki Plateau is a large (500,000 km2) mid-ocean platform that rises 3000 m above the abyssal plains of surrounding ocean basins (depth -5500 m). Its foundation evolved about 112 Ma ago by massive outpouring of basaltic lavas at a plate triple junction. The plateau is blanketed by a 900 m thick sedimentary section comprising (i) mid-Late Cretaceous volcaniclastic sandstones / siltstones grading upwards to limestones / chalks and (ii) -500 m of Tertiary nanno-foram chalks and oozes. Cores from DSDP 317 drill-site on the Manihiki High Plateau indicate that the volcaniclastic sediments contain native copper and some thin beds rich in organic carbon.

Removal of gangue minerals from ilmenite concentrates can be accomplished by relatively low temperature roasting in controlled gas atmospheres to selectively enhance the magnetic separation characteristics of the ilmenite. At roasting temperatures below 800¦C the magnetising reactions are often not consistent with phase equilibria considerations. Metastable phases can nucleate and control the roasting products. In weathered ilmenites the phase assemblages and microstructures in the altered ilmenite grains can influence the roasting reactions. In this paper we give an overview of the phase chemistry of chemically weathered ilmenites and of metastable phases formed by low temperature roasting. We also report the results of roast experiments conducted in a neutral gas atmosphere. Major increases in magnetic properties after short roasting times at low temperatures were obtained for a range of ilmenite concentrates. For example heating a secondary ilmenite concentrate from Western Australia for 15 minutes in nitrogen at 600¦C gave an increase in the three kilogauss magnetic fraction from three to 92 wt per cent. The solid state phase changes accompanying the inert atmosphere roasts were characterised by combining elemental analyses with quantitative phase analyses of the ilmenite concentrates and their roast products. It was found that the phase reaction that is principally responsible for the increase in the magnetic properties of weathered ilmenites involves a transformation of disordered ferrous-containing pseudorutile to an ordered ilmenite-hematite solid solution containing typically ten to 35 mole per cent of the hematite component. Examples are given of the application of the inert atmosphere roast to effect separations of ilmenite from gangue minerals.

Coal is a vital energy source and source of carbon for metallurgical applications, contributing significantly to the world economy. Coal mining and processing involve multiple processes that generate Respirable Coal Mine Dust (RCMD), one of the primary sources of health hazards for coal workers. Since 2000, the rate of Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (CWP) has continually increased in the U.S, with severity of the cases also worsening. Increasing evidence shows that exposure to RCMD in coal workers is a high-risk factor for lung cancer, which causes more deaths than the following three major cancers combined in the US Recent observations show an increased incidenceof CWP or other lung diseases, particularly among young miners in the Appalachian basin. The CWP prevalence in Appalachia is four times higher than the national average. Although various regulations are in place, the resurgence of such disease among coalminers demands additional efforts to better understand all the possible facets of coal dust toxicity, taking insights from current interdisciplinaryresearch efforts. One such important field is the interaction of coal dust with moisture in underground mines. Although moisture is prevalent and dynamic in an underground mining environment, it has never been evaluated for its impact on modifying the toxicity of coal dust and transport or flow behaviour. However, research conducted in atmospheric sciences in the past decade makes it clear that moisture in the atmosphere can significantly alter the behaviour of mineral dust. This paper is a part of research aimed at understanding how moisture interacts and alters the characteristics of coal dust. Such insight is crucial in understanding the potential toxicity of coal dust and developing mitigation technologies.

A portable surface impedance meter has been tested extensively over a wide variety of geological formations both in Australia and elsewhere. It has proved a useful geophysical too] for relatively shallow mapping (i.e less than 100 metres depth) of faults, intrusions, dykes and conductive ore veins and can be used as a depth probe for overburden and glacial ice. Case studies involving coal seam mapping at Collide (Qld. Australia), galena ore vein location at Zeehan (Tas. Australia) and glacial ice probing on the Brewster Glacier (South Island, New Zealand) are detailed. The first results of a similar unit using a lower frequency with consequential increase in depth of penetration will be presented. The application of VLF measurements to monitor blasting in mines and in the location of earthquake epicentres will also he introduced.

Increased environmental regulations and pressures have created changing and new demands for tailings management strategies in a variety of mining applications. Critical among these items is the disposal of tailings as the pursuit of increased yields and lower costs have driven the application of different process technologies. With a number of technologies having a niche application focus, the belt filter press has been utilised for decades as a cost-effective and versatile option for dewatering different types of mineral tailings and other waste process streams. One of the critical advantages of the belt filter press is the technology’s ability to adapt and work in numerous plant designs, operating conditions and applications. As permitting and disposal options have become more stringent, plant designers, operators and equipment suppliers must develop comprehensive and site-specific economic, design and process evaluation techniques to ensure proper equipment selection and system design for belt filter presses or any other dewatering technologies. This paper will explore these techniques in relation to belt filter presses (with reference to other technologies) in a variety of different applications, along with other considerations to ensure a successful tailings dewatering system and disposal design. Summaries of equipment performance characteristics, operating and maintenance strategies and optimisation techniques will also be addressed in conjunction with the belt filter press’s adaptability to different plant designs and the resulting tailings characteristics.CITATION:Fenzel, M S, 2015. Worldwide iron ore feed grades are trending downwards and will continue to do so with the increasing difficulties of upgrading ores. This has led to operations looking for ways to capture current tailings that still contain valuable material. In the past, these were acceptable to dispose of, but this practice is no longer economically feasible. With the increasing trend of re-mining previous tailings deposits that could be decades old, new equipment designs have been introduced to upgrade current or historic beneficiation plants. These designs can effectively upgrade these tailings to saleable products.Outotec conducted test programs for upgrading iron ore tailings from flotation rejects, thickener underflow or tailings dumps on samples provided by customers around the globe. The studies utilised Outotec’s SLon vertically pulsating high-gradient magnetic separator in combination with preprocessing equipment such as low-intensity magnetic separation, screen or scrubber and flotation for downstream processing of the magnetic concentrate. A review of the equipment required to economically process these tailings is provided, along with testing data and industrial implementation examples. The applicability of environmental geotechnics for erosion management is increasing in importance worldwide. The environmental impact of mining and evolving environmental legislation has been receiving increased attention worldwide in the last two decades (Bradfield, Shultz and Stone, 1996). The potential impacts associated with unstable spoil dumps from mine operations is the focus of concern both by the mining industry, environmental legislative agencies and members of the public. This is because of the need to increase the reliability of erosion prediction and in the minimisation of costs for spoil dump design. Engineered slopes of mine spoils may be stable at the end of construction, but they can deteriorate over time. Engineering design of mine spoil dumps seeks to reduce the potential for such erosion damage through correct selection of an initial stable landform scheme (Goh, 1997). The design of mine spoil dumps must also conform to the specifications of evolving legislation. The Queensland Environmental Management Overview Strategy (EMOS) states that, for minimised degradation of the surface area due to erosion during the development of a project, the erosion rates should be between 12 - 40 tonnes/hectare/year and that the depths of rills and gullies be limited to less than 30 cm (QDPI, 1988). The aim of engineering design is to ensure the long-term stability of the spoil dumps. The implementation of effective planning and operating procedures through recontouring and grading assists in the reshaping of spoil dumps to a safe, stable and non-erodible environment.

In some deposits valuable heavy mineral quality is poor due to increased mineral surface coatings from higher slimes and more competent sand orebodies. Mineral surface coating can include silica or aluminium rich clay minerals and iron based minerals that render the final product quality off-specification, in this case specifically ilmenite and zircon. Conventional physical beneficiation processes such as magnetic separation, electrostatic separation and gravity separation are not able to remove these surface coatings. Surface dependent separation techniques such as electrostatic separators are affected by these coatings which hinders the rejection of non-valuable mineral from product. Attrition scrubbing is the most commonly used technique to reduce surface coatings, using mechanically induced particle to particle interaction, abrasion and shearing.In many cases it is a challenge to measure the surface removal efficiency of these scrubbing units. Elemental analysis techniques (ie X-ray flourescence) (XRF) in a multi mineral environment are unable to measure surface impurity reduction with enough precision. Mineralogical analysis (in this case Qemscan®) has constraints in terms of sample preparation with highly coated particles being plucked out during block polishing. This paper suggests a combination of laboratory separation techniques coupled with elemental analysis to evaluate the surface removal efficiency. Three different types of feed materials were used to analyse the efficiency of surface removal using production attritioner scrubbers. This approach relates the downstream beneficiation plant’s expected performance with that of the attrition scrubber’s scrubbing efficiency.

At present we are witnessing large investments in the iron ore industry, fuelled by demand from Asia. At the same time, there is a changing landscape in pricing of iron ores, with the recent demise of the benchmark system and the evolution of market based index pricing systems. From a customer perspective, it is the behaviour of iron ores in downstream processing that gives them their value; their impact on the sintering or pelletising process and subsequently blast furnace ironmaking. It is therefore important to consider this value when developing projects, making mine planning/cut-off grade decisions, and in setting quality price differentials.This paper describes the use of the Marx value in use (VIU) model to quantify the downstream value of iron ores. The Marx model consists of heat and mass balance modules for sintering, pelletising and a rigorous two-stage heat and mass balance model of blast furnace ironmaking. Mass balance and cost models are applied for steelmaking, casting and rolling. The use of a heat and mass balance allows accurate comparison of the impact of raw material properties on blast furnace operation. The impact of minor elements, such as alumina, silica and phosphorus, and metallurgical properties on ironmaking is described, and examples given for the relative value of haematite, Marra Mamba, and channel iron deposit (CID) ores.

Cerro Vanguardia SA (CVSA), property of AngloGold Ashanti, mines gold and silver from a system of vetiforme orebodies located in the south of the Argentine Patagonia, in the Province of Santa Cruz.Surface mining techniques are applied to develop a series of narrow pits with an average waste to ore ratio of 26:1. This quite unique constraint brings into focus the need to maximise inter-ramp and final wall angles, leading to a strong need to optimise wall control drilling and blasting in order to reduce back-break damage to an absolute minimum.The paper describes a program of applied investigation and design modification implemented during?2008?and?2009 in?two?separate pits of Cerro Vanguardia. Three distinct yet complementary damage mechanisms were identified and observed during the field components of the work; vibration induced strain fracturing, surface cratering around blasthole collars and quasi-static loading and unloading of the surrounding rock mass as a consequence of poorly controlled confinement.With these mechanisms identified, a measurement, modelling and modification campaign was conducted in order to reduce the incidence of each source of damage. Interactive design analysis and modelling, near-field vibration measurement, video capture and the application of electronic initiation technology were supported by seed wave modelling and topographic evaluation of the achieved results.Results point to the usefulness of simulation techniques for determining optimum delay timing to reduce vibration impact, while the visualisation of explosive energy distribution produced by drilling and explosive loading decisions assists in reducing the probability of over-confinement.This paper presents relevant aspects of the two fieldwork campaigns:1) describing the application of the techniques, and2) summarising the results obtained.

The North Shore Connector Project for the Port Authority of Allegheny County involves TBM tunnelling twin light rail tunnels through cohesive soils and rock under the Allegheny River and a narrow city street. Along the tunnel alignment are a listed historic building on shallow foundations as well as modern buildings on deep foundations; one major office block was actually constructed directly over the alignment during the latter phases of design process. This paper provides an overview of the general site conditions, tunnel design and the technical basis for excavation support and tunnelling decisions. Deformation limits, ground improvement, monitoring and mitigation plans are also discussed. Project construction has now commenced and a brief summary of progress to date is included in this paper; this will be updated for the presentation to be made in Melbourne.

A fully instrumented and bench-mounted diamond drilling machine, purpose designed and built, has been used for investigating the effect of aqueous solutions of various chemical compounds when used as drilling fluids. The rocks investigated were andesite, basalt and granite, the chemical compounds were alkylamines, with various hydrocarbon chain lengths, aluminium chloride and dioxane. Rotation speed seems to be one of the major factors affecting the emergence of mechanochemical effects as the results obtained with aluminium chloride clearly indicate. Penetration rate is either unaf- fected or enhanced by the presence of certain compounds, such as aluminium chloride. On the other hand, penetration rate diminishes when the drilling fluid contains dioxane and exhibits an apparently unpredictable behaviour with alkylamine solutions, although it appears that an increase in hydrocarbon chain length usually equates to an increase in penetration 1. Rock texture seems to have a pronounced effect on test repeatability. Northern Star Resources (NSR) operates several operations utilising narrow vein stoping operations in the Kundana area. Stope dilution performance is variable across these operations, with unplanned dilution reducing individual stope economic viability, increasing risk to personnel and machinery operating in and around the stope and delaying the overall stoping sequence. Technical investigations were undertaken to objectively understand the variables which had the largest impact on stope performance and then use the findings to help develop mining strategies to reduce dilution. A stope reconciliation process was developed to compile key stope performance information such as stope design parameters, geotechnical and drill and blast factors. These were compared against the measured dilution. Production targets necessitated a high turnover of stopes in the operations, and hence a requirement for an expeditious process and mine design software with automated tools. The output of these results, together with numerical variables from geological, geotechnical and drill and blast data were analysed via multivariate regression. The analysis identified the factors with the greatest influence over stope dilution, and a forecast model was consequently created. Confidence was gained in the model when the subsequent stopes performed in line with prediction. Different drill and blast designs were subsequently trialled and found to reduce dilution. The model was then updated with the new practices, facilitating further regression analysis to identify revised key controlling factors. The subsequent production results however, displayed a poor correlation with the prediction from the revised model. Inconsistencies in drill and blast designs and execution were identified as key factors in the dilution performance. This was an important finding as the correct implementation of the design is critical and this has become a key focus for future stoping. Overall the technique presents an objective process to identify causal factors of stope dilution resulting in improved economic metrics for stope production. The process will be applied to other similar Northern Star operations.

The usual focus of papers on fatty acid collector action in non-sulfide flotation is on the adsorption of the carboxylate and/or neutral molecule species at the mineral-solution interface. Little attention is paid as to whether or not the solution conditions correspond to true solutions, micellar and other self-assembly objects or precipitates. Our examination of the solution chemistry of the important fatty acid collector, oleic acid, has revealed that many, if not most investigators set their experimental conditions to be in micellar or precipitate domains while arguing, often by implication, that they have only solute species present. We have investigated the equilibrium solution domains usually encountered in studies of oleic acid flotation of such minerals as barite, calcite and fluorite. The alkaline earth-fatty acid and liquid oleic acid precipitate phases exert a strong influence on the solution chemistry, a fact not often appreciated in many studies.

The physical properties of monazite and the minerals with which it is associated in east coast beach sands are studied and discussed. Possible means for improving recovery are examined. In particular, it is suggested that the practice of splitting the heavy mineral concentrate into two parts as a preliminary to treatment in separate "rutile" and "zircon" mills can be modified in a simple fashion by the addition of an extra magnetic separation stage so as to aid monazite recovery.INTRODUCTIONBeach sand deposits on the east coast of Australia are a major source of rutile and zircon, and supply 80 per cent or more of world requirements. The deposits also contain a small amount of monazite, averaging about 0.5 per cent of the total heavy minerals. Yet despite a steady price in recent years of £150-160 per ton, monazite production has remained relatively small.On the basis of rutiIe production, potential monazite production on the east coast was about 1,500 tons in 1956, but only 102 tons of high-grade concentrate was produced. The main deterrent to increased production has probably been the capital cost of the necessary equipment. Separate electrostatic and magnetic equipment and separate table concentration and drying constitute a considerable outlay for a by-product contributing 4 to 5 per cent of the revenue from rutiIe.It is the purpose of this paper to discuss monazite concentration generally and to suggest modifications to flowsheets, which may facilitate monazite production while maintaining the main objective, simple and cheap means for maximum rutile production.

"The Lamego mine is an underground gold mine in the Iron Ore Quadrangle in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The mine produces 48 to 50 koz per annum, as part of the larger Cuiabá-Lamego Complex. This combined unit is AngloGold Ashanti’s largest gold producer in the Americas, contributing with 310 to 320 koz per annum.The mine started production in 2009, utilising cut-and-fill mining methods.A mining method change was trialled in 2014, introducing open stope methods. The key benefits proposed from this change are considered to be: improved safety by eliminating re-entry mining methods reduced mining costs/increased productivity from utilising bulk-mining operations.The results from the trial were encouraging, and open stoping participation expanded beyond a trial.Production from open stope areas reached 180 000 t (40 per cent of total run-of-mine; ROM) in 2015. While the change in mining method resulted in higher production rates, it also introduced a critical issue in terms of stope recovery rate.Average underbreak (unplanned loss of ore) in the larger open stopes reached 21 per cent in 2015. To manage this ore loss, a project targeting higher recovery was structured with three primary components: analyse current performance to define contributing factors (design process gaps, operating practices) investigate corrective actions apply corrective actions and maximise team engagement to ensure changes become standard practice.Within six months of commencement, a range of contributing factors had been identified, and the majority of the associated corrective actions implemented, including increased team engagement to ensure changes were not ‘once off’ actions.The outcomes show a clear reduction in underbreak (average ~12 per cent for 2016), with further improvement opportunities identified. The challenging target is now to achieve a further reduction to 10 per cent underbreak as the average for 2017. This paper presents a rationale for selecting appropriate support elements which combine to form a support system to maintain stability in mines subjected to both strainburst and the shaking that occurs from fault slip. The overall approach was developed during the 'case for safety' study undertaken to allow the then Beaconsfield Gold mine (now Tasmania mine) to resume development and production after the 25 April 2006 ground-fall and fatality that received worldwide publicity. Issues of the sometimes competing requirements of support element performance during dynamic loading are discussed and the need for support flexibility is contrasted with the usual high support element stiffness required when these are used to reinforce rock masses. An example is presented to show the steps and technical details required to design each component of a support system to counter the de-stabilising effects of seismicity.
