The New Zealand microcontinent is relatively well endowed with gold deposits; its past gold production per unit area of 3.2 kg/km2 ranks high on a world scale. Total recorded production (1857 - 1986) is about 854 000 kg and most of this gold was mined between 1861 and 1920. There has been a strong revival in gold exploration and mining since 1979, with exploration expenditure of around $15 million per annum and a declared gold production in 1986 of 1265 kg (886 kg in 1985). In addition to numerous alluvial gold recovery plants working small to medium sized deposits (mainly in Westland and Otago), there are five medium to large projects that have started production (Martha Hill), or have reached advanced stages of construction (Grey River dredge), permitting (Golden Cross and Macraes) or exploration (Globe-Progress). Uranium ore at Sleisbeck, N.T., occurs as lenticular bodies associated with zones of bleached carbonized schists lying between walls of closely folded quartzite. The ore consists mainly of uranium micas with Borne pitchblende.INTRODUCTIONThe Sleisbeck uranium prospect is about 70 miles E. of Pine Creek, and 160 miles S.E. of Darwin (Fig. 1). The prospect consists of a well-defined, E.-W. trending line of hills, about I! miles long. The line is composed of 3 major hills called the Eastern, Central and Western hills, with minor interconnecting hills and outcrops (Fig. 2).

A review of historic mining information and geological literature pertaining to the Alpine Mine, Lyell Goldfield has been completed. As a result of this work the Alpine reef is inferred to be associated with an upright anticline with a sub-horizontal axis. Structural profiles prepared from limited underground data indicate that the reef is subparallel to the eastern limb of the anticline and cuts across the western limb. Reassessment of structural mapping completed by the New Zealand Geological Survey indicates that Greenland Group metasediments within the Lyell Goldfield are folded into a series of opposed assymetic folds with sub-horizontal axes. It is suggested that the anticline which harbours the Alpine Reef is located on the axis of a synclinorium. Along the western limb of the synclinorium the subsidiary folds have steep west dipping limbs and shallow east dipping limbs (western sense of assymmetry) whereas shallow west dips and steep east dips are typical of the eastern limb. The notion of quartz mineralisation occupying the axis of a synclinorium is contrary to the situation in the Reefton Goldfield where quartz mineralisation is affiliated with folds associated with an anticlinorium. Historic mine data reveals that below No.4 Level the quartz-gold mineralisation, in the Alpine Mine, occupied a steeply dipping ore channel. The strike of the channel was to the northwest and within this structure the are shoots plunged to the north at approximately 40¦. Archival mine plans show that two quartz bodies, the North and South Blocks, were present at No. 4 Level. Although the North Block was followed down to No 14 Level (530 m vertically below the surface outcrop) the South Block was only mined as far as No 7 Level. Sampling on No 7 Level together with the results of trial mining suggest that the grade of quartz underfoot in South Block is low. Information from the Mines Statements and mapping undertaken by the Gold Prospecting Scheme reveals that faulting had a profound influence on the intregity and extent of the Alpine Reef. The reef occupies a Inajor shear zone but little is known about it. It is also apparent that below No 7 Level the reef was progressively shattered by faulting and this may be the chief reason for the decrease in grade in the lower levels of the mine. No substantive facts are available about wall rock alteration effects adjacent to the Alpine Reef Still this is not surprising considering that comments on the mineralised pug envelope and breccias adjacent to the mined quartz shoots at the Globe - Progress Prospect were omitted from contemporary publications. In spite of this the existance of sulphide bearing reef casing lithologies cannot be completely dismissed since 9.15 m of 'reef track' has been reported in Reids No 2 Level.

The assistance that can be gained by the use of aerial photographs in the geological examination of a mineral field is clearly illustrated by the results of a rapid reconnaissance survey of the newly-discovered Mount Fitton talc, deposits, situated in the north-eastern extension of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia.The talc deposits were found to occur about the margins of a large lenticular mass of dolomitic marble, interbedded with hornfelsic tillites and fluvio-glacial sediments of Upper Pre-Cambrian age. Aerial photographs show clearly the extent of the dolomitic marble on which the growth of a species of eucalypt-Eucalyptus Gillei-is prominently developed, and which assists in defining the limits of this relatively light-coloured formation. (See Fig. 1).Upon field investigation it was found that the talc, deposits are related closely to the margin of the dolomitic marble where the latter has been subject to minor folding and faulting. The deposits themselves have been formed by metasomatic replacement of schistose dolomite. The contact of the dolomite with the underlying and overlying glacial beds is also noteworthy for the presence of minor occurrences of copper, silver, lead and zinc minerals.An examination of photographs covering a wide area reveals an outcrop of a massive granite to the north-east of the dolomitic marble, Fig. 2, which was almost certainly responsible for the regional metamorphism of the dolomitic and glacigene sediments, and the source of the mineralising solutions.All these features, as well as the broader structural features of the area, which are extremely important in the understanding of, individual commercial depQsits, were quickly determined with the assistance of the photographs.It is useful, briefly to relate the procedure adopted in examining this recently developed field as an example which may be well worth following on other fields, even if exposures are not so clearly defined. The method to be outlined, of course, will be of maximum advantage. Where rock exposures are good, where the ore bodies are likely to be widely spread, and where such bodies are related to some major geologi-cal control. It is proposed that a waste rock dump be constructed on slopes consisting of soft colluvium and weathered Chim Formation mudstone at the Porgera Gold Mine, in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea (PNG). Geolog- ical, geomorphological and geophysical investigations were conducted in support of geotechnical studies to assess the physical character of the 6km2 site. Geomorphological studies focused on the extent and nature of colluvium cover and landslide activity. Detailed ground traverse mapping resulted in classification and delineation of eight terrains and seven material types. Seismic refraction and resistivity profiling, combined with drilling, provided subsurface data. Results were presented as standard profiles, coloured contoured sections and plans. Subsurface features, including deep colluvial channels, buried cliffs, slump blocks and buried alluvial channels, were identified. Results of the combined investigations allowed designers to model the colluvium/ bedrock surface and identify critical areas of deep, mobile colluvium and weak bedrock. A design approach was developed which accounted for the morphology of landslide systems and distribution of colluvium types.

Obviously, the paramount advantages of contract mining have been recognised by mine developers throughout Australia, as evidenced by surface gold mining operations of significant output almost exclusively being performed under contract. These paramount advantages of using an experienced professionally managed contractor result from the mine developer being freed from financing the required relatively large capital expenditure at current relatively high interest rates or in a capital scarce stock market, and from the need to recruit and sustain a large operating work force in a competitive labour market.

Bulk sampling programs are typically applied in coarse gold mineralised systems to verify resource/reserve grades. In recent years, there have been controversies surrounding some results of underground bulk sampling exercises compared to the predictions using diamond drill data. Just how realistic is it to predict 100 t lots from drilling that was designed to model blocks of several thousand tonnes? This study looks at the variation of relatively small units within larger planned mining units and compares some of the geostatistical techniques which purport to provide tools for such studies. Relative difficulty of application, computer timings and summaries of results will be used to illustrate the likely variation in bulk sampling units as opposed to mining units and large-scale planning units. A case study based on publicly available data from a gold project in North America is presented. A simplistic and unconditional geostatistical simulation model demonstrated that up to 50 per cent of a relatively high-grade mining block could show as uneconomic low-grade subblocks. A subsequent study will consider a similar demonstration using uniform conditioning. Erroneous impressions of early sampling results can lead to unsupported prejudgements of the final results. Bulk sampling programs require detailed planning based on ore characteristics, where protocols must fit the mineralisation type. Any program requires definition of aims and data quality objectives across grade, geological, geotechnical and geometallurgical parameters.CITATION:Clark, I and Dominy, S C, 2017. Plant based on the New Jersey refluxing process was installed at the Cockle Creek Works of Sulphide Corporation Pty. Ltd. to refine portion of the zinc output from the Imperial Smelting furnace.Refining of impure zinc is effected by distillation in two stages in vertical columns comprising a series of superimposed silicon carbide trays designed such that ascending zinc vapours and descending liquid metal are in intimate contact. In the first stage, portion of the zinc and its cadmium content are distilled from impure feed metal, condensed, and while still molten, fed to the second column in which zinc is boiled under controlled refluxing conditions to remove the cadmium content.The resultant zinc has a purity in excess of 99·995 per cent zinc.The availability of refined zinc has made possible the production of a number of zinc alloys for marketing in addition to the basic grades of zinc.

The object of this paper is to give a description of the new office and changehouse building and equipment at the Zinc Corporation Limited, the office section of which has now been in full use for approximately three years, and the changehouse section for approximately two years. As the expectations of the design have been fully realized, it is thought that this description will be of interest to members and possibly of some use to others faced with similar problems.GENERALIn the centralization of the surface plant around the new main shaft the combined office and changehouse building forms a prominent feature, being located between the shaft and the mill and facing the workshops on the northern side.The scheme for housing all employees in one building was proposed by the Manager, Mr. A. J. Keast, who was familiar with a similar successful structure built at the McIntyre Porcupine Mines Ltd. in Ontario, Canada.The principal features of this building were adopted as a basis for design, and the present layout evolved to suit the particular requirements of this mine.Some of the advantages of the design are:(a) Economy in first cost and space occupied when compared with plants having separate office and changehouse buildings.(b) Easier and more constant supervision of employees and of the plant by the senior staff members.(c) Close contact between officials of all departments.(d) Close covered connection between changehouse and shaft.(e) Avoidance of duplication of ,essential services such as electric power, water, heating plant, sewerage, etc.The Managing Director, Mr. W. S. Robinson, further instructed that the following requirements be adhered to in the new building:(a) Ample accommodation to be provided for office staff and other employees.(b) Special attention to be paid to lighting, both natural and artificial.(c) Working temperatures to be controlled to facilitate comfort and efficiency.(d) The buildings and equipment' to be of a permanent nature with furnishings and fittings of modern design.

William Frederick McBryde Broun, a graduate of the Royal School of Mines, was employed on the staff of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company for some years prior to 1912, and will perhaps be remembered by some of those who attended the Mount Morgan meeting of the Institute in 1910, as an Associate Member present on that occasion. He severed his connection with the Mount Morgan Company in 1912, and was returning to England via the East Indies, when he contracted typhoid atSingapore and died at Colombo.Years later some old papers were being turned out in the office where he had worked, when a set of M.S. notes in his unmistakeable handwriting came to light. On examination these appeared to be the rough draft of a paper he must have beenpreparing for the local branch of the Institute, which he had not been able to complete. The notes were very rough. Apparently it was the author's intention to fill in numerous gaps with extracts from sundry published articles on Cornish mining; theextracts were missing and only the written portions linking them together were there. They give a sketch of Cornish mining practice which those who wish may supplement (as the author would have done) from Le Neve Foster and other well-knownsources. The fragmental notes which have been pieced together as carefully as possible by Mr B G Patterson, Hon Secretary Mount Morgan Branch; are as follows :-The first mine the author worked at was Carn Brea, in 1904."This is one of the largest tin mines in Cornwall, and belongs to the Carn Brea and Tincroft Mining Co, which also owns Cooks Kitchen. The use of comparative sampling methods during the evaluation of the tin-copper deposits at Cleveland mine yielded closely checking average results from groove, channel, AXT split diamond drill core, and bulk sampling for both tin and copper content of the ore.The weighted mean tin and copper grades and values for the groove, channel, and split core samples showed small percentage differences from bulk sample results, and the F-ratio test for single population origin of the four types of samples was accepted at the 99· 5 per cent level of confidence.These results indicate that grade estimates based on the assays from AXT split diamond drill core and/or groove samples would be reliable within practical limits.

Knowledge of true block grades is obtained from a mathematical model of an orebody, simulated with sample grades normally distributed and spatially correlated according io a spherical semi-variogram model.The superiority of kriging to the polygonal method of estimation is demonstrated on this modelled deposit by comparing the true values with the kriged and polygonal estimates obtained from sampling the deposit. Finally, selection of blocks of the deposit on the basis of the estimated values, shows that if kriging is used, what is predicted is largely mined, whilst if the polygonal method is used large biases can occur depending on the position of the cut-off grade.

Some of the problems associated with drill core evaluation of alluvial tin deposits and correlation with plant-scale recovery are discussed. Panning churn-drill cores on site tends to undervalue such deposits because of failure to recover completely all the available liberated cassiterite, and secondary gravity processing may also fail to give an accurate determination of potentially recoverable tin. However, by using a combination of heavy liquid separations, x-ray fluorescence analysis for Sn, and normal methods of reflected and transmitted polarized light microscopy, a quantitative assessment of alluvial material can be carried- out. The information obtained may include the liberation characteristics and distribution with size of the cassiterite, the nature and quantities of the various gangue minerals, and the amount of potentially recoverable cassiterite in the material as compared with the amount locked with light gangue minerals and hence difficult or impossible to recover. In addition, an analysis of the efficiencies of the various gravity processes, such as panning, jigging, and tabling, used to determine "recoverable tin" in the alluvial material, can be carried out. A detailed example is given of this type of investigation, in which an assessment was made of a churn-drill core from Uncia, Bolivia.

Copper, sulphur, nickel, cobalt, palladium, silver, and gold can be recovered from the copper sulphide precipitated from the "copper boil" of the Sherritt-Gordon nickel process used at Western Mining Corporation's Kwinana nickel <refinery. The method is based on an oxidative ammonia leach of copper, nickel, and the precious metals at temperatures below 40°C to produce, in part, elemental sulphur, in the residue. This is followed by heating to decompose thiosulphate and remove some ammonia with precipitation of some of the copper, palladium, gold, and silver. Addition of sulphur dioxide to pregnant liquor precipitates copper, as either Chevreul's salt or copper(I) ammonium sulphite, together with the remaining gold and silver. Less than 10 per cent of the dissolved palladium and less than 1 per cent of nickel and cobalt precipitate to this stage.In one option, the Chevreul's salt is dissolved in a solution of copper(II) sulphate, acetonitrile, and water to generate a solution of copper(I) sulphate. Gold and silver do not dissolve. The solution of copper(I) sulphate is thermally disproportionated by distilling acetonitrile to give exceptionally pure copper powder, with desirable characteristics for powder metallUrgy. Nickel, cobalt, and ammonium sulphate are recovered from the motherliquor of the Chevreul's salt precipitation by return to the Sherritt-Gordon process, where recovery procedures already exist. Palladium is recycled for eventual removal as a sulphide with the gold and silver.In the other option, solid copper(I) ammonium-sulphite is <thermally disproportionated in water at 150°C to copper powder.

Geophysical surveys are currently being carried out over mineral prospects all around the Pacific Rim. Many of these surveys are successful in locating mineralisation in porphyry intrusives, mesothermal environments, and epithermal vein systems. A number of examples of surveys in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea are presented, which show the successful application of various geophysical techniques to the discovery of mineral deposits on the Pacific Rim.

Coal seam gas (CSG) exploration and development requires the abstraction of significant amounts of water. This is so because gas desorbtion in coal seams takes place only after aquifer pressure has been reduced by prolonged pumping of aquifer water. CSG waters have a specific geochemical signature which is a product of their formation process. These waters have high bicarbonate, high sodium, low calcium, low magnesium, and very low sulphate concentrations. Additionally, chloride concentrations may be high depending on the coal depositional environment. This particular signature is not only useful for exploration purposes, but it also highlights potential environmental issues that can arise as a consequence of CSG water disposal. Since 2002 L&M Coal Seam Gas Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd, have been involved in exploration and development of CSG in New Zealand. Anticipating disposal of CSG waters as a key issue in CSG development, they have been assessing CSG water quality along with exploration work. Coal seam gas water samples from an exploration well in Maramarua closely follow the geochemical signature associated with CSG waters. This has helped to identify CSG potential, while at the same time assessing the chemical characteristics and water generation processes in the aquifer. Neutral pH and high alkalinity suggest that these waters could be easily managed once the sodium and chloride concentrations are reduced to acceptable levels.

The mechanization of the coal industry in New South Wales involved the introduction of large face and transport machines. The trend is towards still higher capacity units with .greater horsepower and it became apparent that a potential risk of damage to the hearing of workmen existed. In order to assess whether the sound levels were SUfficiently high to impair the hearing of workmen a sound level survey of all major operations in the industry was carried out by the Mining Engineering Division of the Joint Coal Board.The results indicated ·that the operations could be classified into three categories of risk, probably hazardous, of doubtful hazard due to the intermittency of the operations, and of low hazard.Legislation has subsequently been enacted requiring the wearing of hearing preservation aids in some of the probable risk operations.

Important factors in dredge design are the estimation of total head, and the determination of flow in and around suction nozzles and in pipe lines. Total head for the dredge pump is calculated from velocity, static, and friction heads. Flow into suction nozzles depends on whether hydraulic jets or mechanical cutters are used, and on nozzle shape. Design of pipe lines depends on the transportation characteristics of the pulp, skin friction, swirl, and the avoidance of cavitation. Measurement and control of flow is important.INTRODUCTIONEconomic deposits of heavy minerals along the east coast of Australia occur in frontal dunes, which are normally unconsolidated and granular, or in hind dune areas which may contain indurated seams interspersed with loose material. In working frontal dunes, dredging depths are usually shallow since values do not persist for more than a few feet below sea level. However, the controlling factor in dredging the hind dune areas is the level of the water table and suction dredges may be designed to mine to depths of 120 ft, or even more, if necessary.In previous applications of suction dredges in the industry attention was directed primarily towards production and there was only limited research on fundamental techniques. However, with lower grade deposits now forming the major ore reserves, production levels and profit margins will fall unless more efficient dredges are developed.For satisfactory design of dredges it is essential that the total head be accurately estimated and that detailed information of the principles of flow in and around suction nozzles be determined. This paper presents information gained from field experience and laboratory investigation on these aspects.

The mineralogy and textures of a portion oC ore from the 25 level northern orebody, North mine, Broken Hill are described. This ore, in places, contains up to 70 per cent cubanite (CuFe2S3 ) which has crystallized directly with other sulphides and associated gangue minerals.Several breakdown reactions involving the cubanite are also considered.
