The mineralised members of the Brockman Iron Formation mined at Mt Whaleback are overlain and underlain by shale horizons. To maximise resource recovery, waste movement within the life of mine plan includes mining of the:unmineralised banded iron formation (BIF), Mt Whaleback Shale, Mt McRae Shale, Mt Sylvia Formation, and parts of the Wittenoom and Jeerinah Formation. With the exception of BIFs, all other units contain zones with varying amounts of sulphides and carbon û æreactive shaleÆ. Reactive shale has a propensity to self-heat and can react with some explosives, resulting in spontaneous explosion. Sulphide rich zones also have the potential to generate acid rock drainage (ARD). Mining reactive shale at the Mt Whaleback mine must be undertaken in a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible manner. Key tasks in the mining process include:100 per cent identification of blastholes that may contain reactive shale; 100 per cent correct loading of blastholes with specified blasting products; 100 per cent of reactive shale mined, hauled and dumped in designated overburden storage areas; 100 per cent containment and treatment of ARD water onsite; and ongoing research into ARD, self-heating and spontaneous combustion. Successful mining of reactive shale requires constant co-ordination between the geology, mine planning, mining and environment departments.

On 20 December 1983 at 8.40am blast- hole 57 of Blast RN177 prematurely detonated follwed by a violent deflagration of blast- hole 59 at 10.40am. The blastholes were 380mm diameter drilled in black pyritic Mt McRae shale. The blastholes were loaded with ANFO and primed. Blasthole 57 was stemmed and blasthole 59 was not. A poss- ible mechanism which could lead to such a detonation is described. preliminary tests showed the top 5m of a bench had the highest temperature which could not be influenced by a range of treat -ments. Small scale laboratory tests show- ed that zinc oxide (ZnO) and magnesium carbonate (Mg2CO3) inhibited the reaction. A series of tests using AN with and without inhibitors loaded into the collars of blast -holes drilled in the top 6m of the bench and unstemmed is described. An analysis of the time to reaction of the holes loaded with AN against temperature shows that the decomposition of the AN in contact with the black pyritic shale is probably a sulphuric acid catalysed react- ion. All the inhibitors tested can neut- ralise the sulphuric acid in the shale. 10% ZnO appears to be an effective inhibitor of the reaction providing the AN/ZnO (90/10) is kept out of contact with surface material whose temperature can be as high as 60¦C in summer. It is concluded that ANFO/ZnO (90/ 10) should be now tested in stemmed holes.

The mining industry’s attention has shifted over the last decade with the recovery from the downturn resulting in greater development of innovation and new work methods in a bid to remain competitive and deliver higher productivity. The emphasis on cost reduction to improve profit margins has primarily been the focus of the “work smarter” campaigns embraced within the industry. But is this strategy holistically the best-for-business, or does it place a ceiling on revenue opportunities and inhibit mining companies from truly maximising value? Businesses need to maintain a balance between active cost management and revenue generation often resulting in cost reduction strategies at site level. These strategies have merit, assessing areas of cost wastage across operations and creating space for opportunity. However, this potentially can create distractions from the goal of enabling growth and lead to the sacrifice of quality and delivery. Focusing too heavily on cost reductions without addressing revenue generation is an unprofitable lens to look through, and the relationships between cost, revenue, quality and profit margin can often be overlooked resulting in missed opportunity to maximise value. How these relationships are effectively employed by mining companies to reap the rewards from an overarching corporate perspective down to site level remains a fluid concept depending on the nature, operating market and strategy of the business. A common directive from businesses to their operations is to strive for greater profitability and productivity. The quantification of these requirements, and the nature of the cascading message delivered, impacts the methods employed by the operational team to meet the expectations of the business. Cascaded strategies, if not delivered with appropriate participation and buy-in can often be perceived to be knee-jerk and create frustration for operations who are squeezed to deliver on expectations by slashing site costs. This squeezing is not only felt by the mining operation but at the individual level and can result in increased team stresses. In some cases, this may also steer behaviours towards activities that result in corner cutting and an elevation of operational risk, potentially increasing associated incidents and injury. Driving down costs by any means can create an unhealthy tunnel vision where value is no-longer assessed for best-forbusiness results. By flipping the viewpoint to a value-based approach revenue opportunity may be realised and potentially exceeded, however this opportunity may be missed if value is over shadowed by a cost heavy focus. By analysing a selection of real operational cases (ranging from mining contractors through to in-house mining giants), it becomes apparent that practical revenue maximisation strategies are not only key to an increase in value and cash flow but to a stronger understanding of business drivers for sites and operators alike. In the cases evaluated additional revenue opportunities are foregone in favour of cost reduction strategies resulting in negative impacts on the associated operations and wider businesses. Alignment towards value generation is king. If strategies are not implemented focusing towards value and revenue maximisation, the opportunity loss experienced by mining operations could continue be great and the question should be posed; when the next up-turn hits will operations be ready to reap the rewards or still have a glass ceiling above their heads?

Blast vibration analysis is one of the important topics in the control technology of blast vibration damage. Nowadays, blasting vibration safety standards are based on both the particle velocity and the frequency of vibration and they have been adopted widely and internationally. However, the analysis on vibration frequencies is less studied compared to investigations of peak particle velocity. For the vibration induced by a spherical charge in a viscoelasticly infinite rock mass, an expression of vibration spectrum taking into account the damping effect of rock mass is inferred. Then the attenuation laws of dominant frequencies and centroid frequencies are compared theoretically. For the case of cylindrical charge, dynamic finite element method (DFEM) software of LS-DYNA is employed to analyse the attenuation laws of characteristic frequencies. The research demonstrates that, no matter whether it is a spherical charge or a cylindrical charge, there is a local mutation or fluctuation at some distance when the blast proceeds, while the centroid frequencies conform to a smooth attenuation law. Both the multipeaks structures of vibration spectra and the decay rate difference between high- and low-frequency components contribute to the mutation or fluctuation investigated in this study. Additionally, an increase in longitudinally sonic velocity or the quality factor of rock mass produces an increase in the vibration frequencies, whereas an increase in blast source diameter or the rise time of blast load produces a decrease in vibration frequencies from a spherical charge. In borehole blasting, there is a positive correlation between the vibration frequencies and charge diameter, whereas there is a negative correlation with charge length. And altering the initiation plan will change vibration frequencies to various degrees. Early in 1950 a new laboratory was set up to deal with problems in mineragraphy, petrology and metallography. This paper describes the equipment, the organisation and association of the laboratory with the various departments of the company, the work that has been done and future plans.At Mount Isa it was soon realised that the microscope would play a most important role in mineral dressing problems and aiding geological research.As early as 1928, R. J. Colony submitted a petrographic report on Black Star ore for Consolidated Limited; much later, in 1934-5 Dr. Grondijs published for Mount Isa Mines Limited a preliminary study of the Mount Isa orebody, followed by a mineragraphicinvestigation of mill products, and in 1937 a Study of Mount Isa Ores by H. GrondIjs and C. Schouten appeared in Economic Geology, for June-July. Other papers dealing with the petrology and mineragraphy of Mount Isa ores are appended at the end of the paper.The mill research metallurgical staff has endeavoured to incorporate mineragraphy in solving milling problems and determining the effectiveness of laboratory as well as examining minerals sent in by the geological department.For many years the amount of equipment available was limited and much of it was locally made or improvised. An improvised briquetting machine, and grinding and polishing lap gave moderate results in conjunction with an old, but serviceable, Leitz microscope. However, for more detailed and accurate work not possible with improvised equipment, many mineragraphic problems were sent to specialist in.

When using grinding time for a batch grinding operation as a measure of the energy usefully employed for comminution; the assumptions made are often not valid. A kinetic approach, based on a study of the rate constant, or k, value for the material is more acceptable. The Rosin-Rammler distribution equation has been theoretically derived from the general equation for first-order batch grinding. This relationship, incorporating a term for k, was used in a study of the rod milling of a binary mixture of quartz and limestone.The presence and degree of interaction between the components was considered by comparing the size distribution of the mill product with that predicted by assuming the overall distribution equal to the sum ofthe distributions given by the Rosin-Rammler equations for each component weighted according to its volume fraction in the mixture. The interaction was found to be complex and particularly sensitive to particle size.A simple graphical procedure was devised to predict the size distribution of the mill. Product components and this gave a fairly good approximation to experimental data.

Arrium’s OneSteel Whyalla Steelworks in South Australia is a fully integrated plant which operates a single blast furnace. The key operational objective has been to maintain high process availability and stability while maximising the process efficiency and the produced hot metal quality. All ferrous raw material input feeds are sourced exclusively from company iron ore deposits in the nearby Middleback Ranges. The Whyalla blast furnace has mostly operated using a combination of a high percentage of pellet feed, produced in Whyalla, together with screened lump ore.The unique ironmaking challenge has always been to extract the maximum value from the ferrous burden feed available locally. In earlier times, high-grade hematite lump ore was available for both screened lump ore and pellet production. Blast furnace trials from acid to fluxed pellet feed commenced in 1977. The furnace pellet feed has been wholly fluxed since 1981. Many pellet/lump ore feed mixes and significant pellet chemistry composition design changes have been made over the years. These changes have been aimed at best balancing the ferrous burden availability/cost and the optimum reducibility/high temperature melting behaviour of the charged ferrous feed within the blast furnace. In more recent times since 2007, the Whyalla blast furnace operation has transitioned from a hematite based pellet feed to a magnetite based pellet feed while there is an ongoing contest dealing with diminishing absolute quality/increased variability raw material feed inputs.The paper will detail key elements of the Whyalla blast furnace operational philosophy with regards to ferrous feed use and process optimisation. "Implicit modelling is an approach to spatial modelling in which the distribution of a target variable is described by a unique mathematical function that is derived directly from the underlying data and high-level parametric controls specified by the user. This modelling approach may be applied to discrete variables such as lithology (after converting the discrete codes to numeric values) or to continuous variables such as geochemical grades. This paper discusses the estimation of continuous (grade) variables using implicit modelling.One of the underlying engines of implicit modelling for producing this mathematical function description is the radial basis function (RBF). In essence, the RBF is a weighted sum of functions positioned on each data point. A system of linear equations is solved to derive weights and the coefficients of any underlying drift model coefficients. Once derived, the RBF may be solved for any unsampled point or averaged over any volume to provide an estimate of grade. It is possible, for example, to query the RBF on a regular grid to derive an estimate of block grades. Given the ease of creation of an RBF, and its ability to predict grade, the question arises as to how the grades derived from the solution of an RBF compare with grade estimates derived from conventional geostatistical interpolation methods (eg ordinary kriging (OK)).The purpose of this paper is to describe in lay terms: the basic structure of an RBF the role of parametric choice in the solution of RBFs and how this influences the character of the solution the fundamental similarities and differences between RBFs and conventional geostatistical estimators.Using a high-resolution conditional simulation, we show that in many situations RBF and OK estimates are very similar.CITATION:Stewart, M, de Lacey, J, Hodkiewicz, P F and Lane, R, 2014. A new bench blast design method and its realization with the assistance of the computer is introduced. The basic design principle is to define a rhomb cell, called fully- fractured zone, through a series of full scale bench crater tests and apply this geometric pattern in multi-hole, multi- row blast design. To illustrate the design method, the optimization process and assessment of blast performance are presented in the context of a case study.

The concentrator plant of Fahrica Mine, that started production in 1977, was using nine Jones wet high intensity magnetic separators (WHIMS) of the standard type DP 317 with a 1.5 mm gap width for the production of pelletfeed concentrate. These WHIMS units were operating in parallel with a feed rate of 110 t per hour, with about 47 per cent Fe in the feed, and with a maximum of only 0.8 per cent magnetite. The field strength was about 1.2 Tesla. From 1986, the mine has adapted its production facilities to mine and concentrate larger amounts of lowgrade itabintes to maximise the use of the available iron ore reserves. An increase of up to three per cent magnetite in the magnetic separator feed, resulted in a reduction of capacity. This was due to partial clogging of the separation boxes at high field intensities, which were required for the recovery of the very fine hematite. Even by lowering the feed rate and the field intensity the problem could not be resolved. After extensive testwork in a pilot plant, with a Jones separator model DI' 90, the commercial WHIMS plant was modified into a two stage process using the existing nine Jones separators. The gap of the first stage with four machines was increased to a width of 3.5 mm, corresponding to a maximum field intensity of 0.7 Tesla. This first 'medium intensity scalping stage' is followed by a second 'real' high intensity WHIMS step with five machines operating at the original settings with 1.5 mm gap width and 1.0 Testa maximum field intensity. Feed rates of up to 320 tons per hour in the first and up to 240 tons per hour in the second stage could be achieved. The design concept of the concentrator at Fabrica mine is described using the old and new flowsheets. Details of the pilot plant testwork as well as actual performance data of the new plant section are presented.

"In the past decade, increased processing capacity combined with precision robotics in high resolution spectrometers has resulted in a new generation of high-speed hyperspectral core logging systems. The application of these multisensor automated platforms provides a key advancement in the characterisation of metal resources. The development of this technology has allowed for comprehensive, drill core-based, mine-scale rock mass characterisation studies. Here we propose a new method for the extraction of parameters that seek to more accurately quantify ground conditions, including quantified rock mass rating (RMR) and the Rock Tunnelling Quality (Q) Index. Data inputs include rock quality designation (RQD), number of joint sets, joint roughness, joint alteration and joint spacing. Geologists and geotechnical engineers have historically collected these inputs by manually logging drill core. With automated core scanning technologies, these parameters can be estimated from the acquired image data and used to objectively calculate RMR and Q-index values for oriented core.Corescan is an automated hyperspectral core scanner that uses a 3D laser profiling system to measure the height of the surface of drill core. This technology allows for rapid core analysis to produce detailed fracture and rock condition data. Through an integrated geometallurgical approach, the proposed methodology will test the accuracy of joint measurement using the height profile Corescan data from oriented drill core. This will be combined with joint roughness and alteration mineralogy measured from the hyperspectral images to calculate the RMR and the Q-index continuously downhole. The values obtained can then be compared to the traditional, manual geotechnical log data. If the precision is sufficient, these techniques can then be applied site-wide to automate the collection and modelling of key ground condition classification indices across an entire deposit. Compared to the laborious manual geotechnical logging procedures that currently form the industry standard, utilisation of core laser profile data and high resolution red-green-blue (RGB) images provide an opportunity to collect large volumes of consistent geotechnical data, which can increase the efficiency and accuracy of deposit scale geotechnical models.CITATION:Harraden, C L, Berry, R and Lett, J, 2016. In recent years, the utilisation of ultra-fine ore in ironmaking has gradually increased due to the depletion of high-quality iron ore. The use of ultra-fine ore in the ironmaking process is typically energy intensive and leads to high CO2 emissions. The improvement of sinter reducibility is one of the methods used to reduce the environmental impact of using fine ore.In this study, a high-strength and high-reducibility sinter manufacturing process was investigated by controlling the sintering reaction. The key technology used in this method is the manufacture of mini-pellets by selective granulation equipment. The mini-pellets consist of iron ore, limestone and burnt lime and are designed to melt at temperatures below 1200°C. The molar ratio of CaO to Fe2O3 of the mini-pellets is 0.25~0.75. The 2~5 mm diameter mini-pellets are manufactured with burnt lime as the binding material.During the sintering of mini-pellets, goethite, which has relatively high reducibility, should be retained as residual ore in the sinter cake. The strength of the sinter cake was kept by the bonding reaction of the mini-pellets, which have a low melting temperature. This is the main principle of the reaction-controlled sintering method.The reaction-controlled sintering method manufactures a high-strength and high-reducibility sinter cake and increases sinter productivity by around 15 per cent using ultra-fine iron ore.CITATION:Chung, B J and Ji, Y K, 2015. The colliery is owned by the BHP Collieries Proprietary Ltd., the principal shareholders being the Broken Hill Pty. Company Ltd. and Hebburn Limited.It is situated due west of Newcastle and 6 south-east of Cessnock, N.S.W., and is conneeted by 36 miles of railway to the port of Neweastle. Of this mileage, 3 miles are owned by the Company, 3 by Hebburn Limited, 9 by the South Maitland Railways Ltd., and 21miles by the Government Railways.The seam worked is known as the Main Greta Seam of the Greta Coal Measures and is on the southern slope of the Lochinvar anticline.At the shaft, the seam is 1190 ft. below the surface, and the section of the coal measures is:-Upper or Main Seam, . 24 ft. 0 in.Conglomerate and shale 70 ft. 0 in.'Middle Seam 8 in.Conglomerate 25 ft. 0 in,Bottom Seam 1 ft. 2 in.These lie between two marine measures, and are the lower coal series of the permo-carboniferous period.Only the upper seam is workable in this area, the lower seams being too thin for eompetitive working. The section of the workable seam at the shafts is as shown on Fig. 1.Unfortunately, only the lower 12 ft. 5 in. of the seam is saleable.

When Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) purchased its fleet of 18 CaterpillarÆs dump trucks in 1999, as part of its change to owner operated mining, five CaterpillarÆs Computer Aided Earthmoving Systems (CAES) were also commissioned on Komatsu PC8000 hydraulic shovels and Caterpillar D10R bulldozers. Since then the CAES system has been installed and operational on Komatsu PC3000 hydraulic shovel, CaterpillarÆs D10R dozers and Cat 994 front-end loader while Cat 854 wheel dozer has been fitted with CAESbasic. This investment in advanced machine guidance and control technology has proven very beneficial over the years for the Super Pit with improved safety and increased operating efficiency and productivity. The paper brings into focus how the CAES system adaptation in unique mining conditions assists in production gain, equipment operatorÆs safety, flexibility and independence, personnel removal from hazardous areas, acquisition of operational information and improvements in mine planning and design, benefiting the entire mining operation.

As part of the fundamental studies on the recovery of Au by solvent extraction, the synergism of combined extractants on the extraction of An from the sulphuric acid solution containing thiourea was investigated. Extractants tested were di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), tri-n-octylamine (TOA), tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP), and trioctyl phosphine oxide (TOPO). Four kinds of extractant combinations, D2EHPA/TBP, D2EHPA/TOPO, TOA/I'BP, and TOAITOPO, were tested to clarify the synergism on the extraction of Au in terms of various concentration ratios, diluents, the concentration of sulphuric acid, and the concentration of thiourea.

The Pleistocene basanite-tephrite Rothenberg cone complex was built by an alter- nation of strombolian and phreatomagmatic phases of explosive eruption. Two main centres, on a one km long NNE-trending fissure, were active during its construction. The strombolian deposits from three discrete facies corresponding to the crater-fill and inner wall and outer wall environments on the cone. The outer wall facies consists of an alternation of 1. 'normal' coarse-grained, relatively well- sorted lapilli and bomb beds, and 2. finer-grained poorly-sorted lapilli beds. Evidence suggests that the former was pro- duced by open-vent lava fountaining, with balanced magma supply and discharge rates, and the latter are the products of eruptions during partial blockage of the vent, by collapse of wall-rock, and formation of a degassed crust on the magma. The resulting explosions there- fore ejected a mixture of fresh actively ves- iculating magma, older partially degassed lava and material recycled from the wall of the cones. The phreatomagmatic deposits are an alternation of moderately-sorted fall beds and thinner ash-rich pyroclastic surge and rain-flushed units. The clast populations are much more diverse than strombolian ones, including abundant wall rock fragments from 0-100 m depth. The juvenile (magmatic) particles range from highly vesicular scoria to dense 'bread-crusted' clasts, and contain abundant small wall rock inclusions. The phreatomagmatic phases are products of explosive interaction of small batches of magma with shallow groundwater. Vesiculation of this magma played a small but significant role throughout the fragmentation.

Mining of the zinc, lead and silver deposit at the Broken Hill Southern Operations site has been occurring for over 100 years. As a result of this, a significant amount of high-grade ore is now taken from narrow remnant pillars left between old stopes and zones of previously mined ground. Stopes have been filled with either hydraulic fill (also known as ‘sandfill’), cemented hydraulic fill (cemented sandfill), waste rock backfill or a mixture of these fill types.In the last ten years, there has been considerable success mining through narrow pillars where sandfill is exposed in the development face and/or walls using a ‘shell’ support regime, wherein a layer of bolted mesh is sandwiched between two layers of sprayed fibrecrete (25 mm fibrecrete, then mesh and bolt, followed by a final 50 mm layer of fibrecrete). Shell support is also used in very poor, broken, relaxed ground conditions and in areas filled with cemented fill (sandfill with a minimum four per cent cement content).The next stage of innovation has been to develop a technique for mining through old stope voids filled with uncemented sandfill, known locally as ‘contours’ (old cut-and-fill working), an activity where unconsolidated sandfill can run at the face and from the backs. The challenge is to prevent exposed sandfill in the face and the backs from failing before it can be supported.To achieve this, the Southern Operations mine has implemented a technique in which 6 m long spiling bars are used to strengthen and stabilise the sandfill in front of the face. The hollow steel bars are driven in around the heading perimeter in a closely spaced pattern then pumped full of grout. The bars and the grout stabilise the sandfill in front of the face, preventing it from failing into the drive during excavation and prior to further support being installed.A final support system consisting of shotcrete, mesh, bolts and steel girders is installed as excavation progresses. Both the initial and final support systems are essentially passive support systems designed for a low-stress environment (as the stress originates mostly from the mass of unconsolidated sandfill).This process is slow and labour intensive. Fifteen separate cycles of people/machinery are needed to progress one equivalent heading cut (compared to six for a standard fibrecrete- and bolt pattern-supported rock face heading). This slow pace introduces scheduling challenges, but the process opens up parts of the orebody that were previously uneconomical to mine.CITATION:Carroll, D, 2014. "The International Cyanide Management Code (the Code) is a voluntary industry program for gold miners and associated cyanide transporters and cyanide producers. By becoming a signatory, a company commits to follow the CodeÆs principles and implement its standards of practice.Signatories are required to undergo an initial certification audit within three years and a recertification audit every subsequent three years. Recertification audits evaluate compliance over the preceding three-year period. This approach presents a number of challenges. Golder Associates has undertaken in excess of 75 initial certification audits and 25 recertification audits; more than any other audit firm. This paper outlines some of the challenges identified and lessons learnt from the recertification audit process. Central to the process is the challenge for organisations to maintain commitment to compliance over the full three-year period and effectively address deficiencies or non-conformances that may have occurred during that period in a prompt manner.The International Cyanide Management Institute (ICMI) provides guidance in evaluating deficiencies or non-conformances, which requires consideration of the æcauseÆ, ædurationÆ and æongoing compliance effortsÆ and an assessment of the concept of ægood faithÆ in response actions. Golder AssociatesÆ experience with the recertification process highlights some common deficiencies with Code compliance programs, such as: system breakdowns (leading to ineffective communication between departments or loss of information) exceedance of discharge limits inadequate inspections, maintenance activities and associated record-keeping.Such deficiencies can be attributed to: personnel changes organisational changes or structures management systems (eg integrated or standalone) awareness and interpretation of Code requirements transparency of management decisions with Code implications.We have identified that ongoing programed assessment is an effective strategy in maintaining Code compliance.CITATION:Beazley, R J and Woods, M C, 2013. The Savage River Mines concentrator treats magnetite ore at about 300 tonne/h, and produces feed for a pelletising plant. The plant incorporates two parallel grinding lines, each consisting of an autogenous mill, in closed circuit with a screen, a rougher mag- netic separator, a ball mill in closed circuit with parallel cyclones, and a finisher magnetic separator. Significant fluctuations in ore grade and grindability make it difficult to maintain pro- duct size in the narrow range desired, and to achieve maximum possible throughput at the same time, using the present largely manual control system. The present paper describes the develop- ment of a control system based on a mini- computer. It has been possible to implement a scheme of on-line estimation of product size which is sufficiently accurate for use in an automatic control system. The size estimation is essentially derived in terms of plant variables which control the ball mill cyclone cut size. Three control functions have so far been implemented and tested. These are control of the feed rate to the autogenous mill, control of water addition to the autogenous mill, and control of the ball mill sump level.

The purpose of the paper is to discuss socially sustainable development in the mining industry and the communities surrounding the mines. The discussions are based on results from a prestudy and literature review on mining and sustainable development conducted during 2013–2014 at Luleå University of Technology in Sweden. ‘A social licence to mine’ is important for the mining industry, but the social dimension is a relatively underdeveloped dimension when it comes to sustainable development in general and the mining industry in particular, one reason probably being the lack of effective methods for capturing social impacts. The mining industry and the surrounding communities face many challenges that provide both possibilities and obstacles to socially sustainable development; eg aspects such as gender, work conditions and cultural aspects. For example, a strong mining workplace culture and community identity can create strong cohesion but also lead to excluding certain groups, rejecting new ideas and reinforcing obsolete values. Other challenges include recruitment, as well as health and safety in relation to an increased use of fly-in-fly-out, contractors and automation of mining. Some challenges relate to the effects of fluctuations in the mining market. There is a lack of research that links attitudes, policies and activities within companies to their impact on the wider community, and vice versa.
