A mineral and chemical characterisation study was conducted on ilmenite-rich heavy mineral concentrates sourced from the western sector of the Eucla Basin in southern Australia. Test work involved using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron microprobe-based characterisation methods. Results showed considerable variability in the degree of ilmenite alteration between deposits with TiO2 contents varying from 53 - 63 wt per cent TiO2. Notwithstanding variability between individual deposits, the samples all had [Ti]/[Ti+Fe] ratios >0.5 consistent with a mineral assemblage of hydrated ilmenite or the hydrated, Ti-rich alteration phase pseudorutile (Fe3+2-x Ti3O9-3x (OH)3x). Accessory phases consisted of rutile (primary and secondary), zircon, aluminosilicates, quartz, Fe oxyhydroxides and spinels. Results for the most altered material are broadly comparable with data for ilmenite concentrates from the eastern margin of the basin. The mineralogy of the western Eucla Basin concentrates and the minor element composition of the ilmenite grains suggest they could be upgraded to synthetic rutile by a modified Becher process.

Heap leaching is establishing itself as an efficient method for the extraction of gold from low grade ore. It has the advantage of low capital costs, low operating costs and rapid startup. However, not all ores are amenable to heap leaching. It is only applicable to well oxidized ores that have reasonable permeability characteristics. Ore with excess fines or clay often display low permeability and are unsuitable for heap leaching.In this study, an attempt has been made to increase the rate of cyanide leach solution percolation by flocculating clay particles or reducing the surface tension of the leach solution. A wetting agent was found to decrease the rate of gold dissolution, possibly by presenting a hydrophobic surface to the gold particle. Flocculation of the clay increased the solution flow rate. The flocculation agent had no affect on the total gold leached but decreased the leaching rate.

The D47 and D39 Mechanical Dynamic Extra bolts (D47 MDX and D39 MDX) have been developed in response to the ever-increasing demand from the mining industry for rock bolts with high dynamic capacity. To prove such capacity, Sandvik has performed numerous in situ dynamic testing with the unique Dynamic Test Rig (DTR) (Darlington, Rataj and Roach, 2019; Roach, Rataj and Darlington, 2019). To complement the collection of testing data, Sandvik, in collaboration with the Swedish Research Institute for Mining, Metallurgy and Materials (Swerim) have performed additional experiments in laboratory condition using Swerim’s new drop test rig. This rig utilises a momentum transfer method to apply a dynamic load to the bolt. The sample falls together with the mass until the support beam impacts stationary dampers and the momentum energy is transferred to the bolt. Part of the charged energy is released by the dumpers while the remaining portion is absorbed by plastic deformation and/or displacement of the ground support element. The D47 and D39 MDX bolts have been tested at Swerim’s test facility with different levels of input energy. Six tests were performed at the specification energy of 36 kJ and six tests were carried out with the maximum allowable energy from the facility, ie 44 kJ. The bolts confirmed their dynamic performance absorbing the input energy without failure. The D47 MDX bolt absorbed up to 33 kJ with 150 mm displacement while the D39 MDX bolt absorbed up to 35 kJ with 162 mm displacement. This work will present an overview of the drop test rig at Swerim’s facility and a collection of results of the test performed on the D47 and D39 MDX bolts. The test method and results will be analysed and compared to the tests carried out with the in situ DTR.

Coal washery wastes comprise tailings, finer than 0.5 to 0.1 inn depending on the sophistication of the washery, and coarse reject, typically finer than 50 mm. Subaerial disposal of coal tailings slurry at about 30 per cent solids by mass results in the formation of a delta with an average slope of about 1 in 100, representing one extreme. The ravelling of coarse reject on loose-dumping, results in an angle of repose slope with an angle of about 37" (1 in 1.3), representing the other extreme. The pumped co-disposal of coal tailings and coarse reject results in the formation of an upper delta with an average slope of about to one in ten, between the two extremes. The depositional behaviour of these three waste streams is discussed and compared in this paper. The important depositional and material parameters, and a theoretical description of the processes involved, are also presented. Comparisons are made between the depositional behaviour of the various coal washery waste streams, and natural depositional systems, such as rivers, alluvial fans, and scree slopes.

In June, 1986, Freeport Indonesia, Inc., in conjunction with Out- okumpu USA, laboratory tested the Flash flotation concept on Primary ball mill underflow. These laboratory results indicated a possible 10% increase in precious metal recovery and 0.6% increase in copper recov- ery were available over conventional methods. By October of the same year two Outokumpu Skim Air SK-240 units were operational on one mill circuit and were achieving 5 to 10% increased recovery in precious metals with equal copper recovery at one percent higher final concentrate grade. Two more cells were purchased and installed on the remaining grinding circuit in July, 1987. As part of the installation of the Skim Air cells, an existing cluster of six 508mm Krebs cyclones were replaced by four 660mm Krebs cyclones. To reduce high circulating loads, these new cyclones were made horizontal at 45 degrees. This arrangement succeeded in reducing the mill circulat- ing load by 100% and has allowed for a 10% increase in throughput at the same grind.

Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited has roasted a number of different zinc sulphide concentrates on its sinter machine which pro- duces zinc-lead sinter for an Imperial Smelting Furnace, and results have varied widely. The differences are considered to be functions of !concentrate particle size and reactivity. Amdel have used differential thermal analysis to examine these concentrates and two major effects have been found. Firstly, in concentrates 1containing small quantities of pyrite and chal- L [copyrite, heat is liberated at 400¦C to 650¦C [by oxidation of these two sulphides. Secondly, as particle size decreases, heat release from the oxidation of zinc sulphide commences at flower temperatures and rate of heat release In a sinter bed, the presence of some rite and chalcopyrite would help to heat the cc sulphide to ignition temperature in a orter time, while a finer concentrate would sult in roasting being completed more ickly. Alluvial mining even of shallow deposits is often economically a marginal proposition and causes significant disruption of the land surface through the need for large scale excavation. In-situ leaching using chlorine-based solutions eliminates the need for excavation, the disruption of surface activities, and may greatly reduce processing costs and improve recovery especially of fine gold. A spreadsheet model has been developed to design and analyse the economics of in-situ leaching of alluvial deposits. In-situ leaching of shallow deposits may be achieved in a number of ways including solution infiltration via perimeter ditches or the use of injection and production wells. In most instances deeper alluvials may only be processed using well systems. Two deposits are analysed in this paper. The first consists of one metre of payable wash beneath one metre of overburden. Some thirty fields per year are treated processing 450 000 BCM per year at a cut-off grade of around $4/tonne ($8/rn3 or the gold value equivalent of 0.26 gh or 0.52 g/m3). The principal costs are well drilling and labour. Sensitivity analysis indicates that doubling the throughput halves the cost. The economics of the project are relatively insensitive to reagent costs and consumptions, and halving the recovery doubles the cut-off grade. Shallow deposits treated using the infiltration ditch system may be marginally cheaper and more conveniently managed although this depends on the relative cost of digging the perimeter ditches. In a second example, deep leads with one metre of wash beneath 30 metres of overburden necessitate significant drilling and feature reduced throughputs as a consequence. In the example chosen 30 fields a year are processed for an annual throughput of 65 000 tonnes costed at around $20/tonne (1.4 g/t Au equivalent, $40 /m3). Sensitivity analysis indicates that throughput, and drilling cost per metre are not important but there is a high sensitivity to recovery and to the depth to payable wash.

With the extensive exploitation and gradual depletion of high-grade copper reserves, the mining industry is paying more and more attention to the hydrometallurgical extraction of copper from lowgrade and arsenic bearing copper ores. Hydrometallurgical processing, such as heap leaching, column leaching and bioleaching, provide a viable alternative to the traditional pyrometallurgy due to its harmony with the environment, moderate capital investment, and low operating costs. However, the slow leaching kinetics of enargite (Cu3AsS4) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) remain problematic for commercial leaching practice. The formation mechanism and the nature of the passivating layers during leaching is still a matter of debate in hydrometallurgical research. In this study, the dissolution mechanism of enargite and chalcopyrite in sulfuric acid solution was investigated using a range of electrochemical and spectroscopic analysis methods. Electrochemical oxidation of enargite demonstrated an obvious passivation region from 500 to 750 mV (Ag/AgCl). The formed passivation film was found a n-type semiconductor behaviour, which is different from the original enargite with a p-type behaviour. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggested that a nonstoichiometric film Cu(3−x)As(1−y)S4 (x>>y) accumulated on the electrode surface, which accounted for the obvious decrease in current density in the passive potential region. For chalcopyrite, three important potentials of 550, 680 and 730 mV which are related to the formation and dissolution of passivation film were observed based on the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and potentiodynamic polarisation. Raman and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra studies of the chalcopyrite electrodes after being treated under these three potentials indicated a metal-deficient sulfide of Cu1−xFe1−yS2 (y>>x) might be responsible for the passivation phenomenon. Hence, it is concluded that the passivation of enargite and chalcopyrite are similar which are caused by metaldeficient sulfide surfaces although the compositions of the metal-deficient sulfide are different.

The presence of high concentrations of dissolved ions in groundwater, sea water or recycled water may alter the water structure, particle surface wettability and colloidal interactions between bubbles and particles and can have a significant effect on mineral flotation. While the impact of water quality on the flotation of precious and base metal minerals is well established, no relevant published study exists currently regarding the effect of water salinity on the flotation of rare earth bearing minerals. This paper attempts to quantify the effect of water quality variation on flotation recovery and grade of rare earth minerals and gain an understanding on which ions existing in saline water affect flotation behaviour. Specifically, it is aimed at investigating the effects of water quality on the flotation of monazite in the presence of cations such as Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, and Na+. Flotation tests, zeta potential measurements, and adsorption tests were performed to explain the flotation behaviour. It was found that monovalent ions such as Na+ and K+ have negative impact on rare earth minerals recovery and grade. The result of single mineral flotation tests showed that the floatability of monazite was significantly depressed in the presence of Ca2+ and Mg2+. The result of single mineral flotation test showed varying depression levels in the presence ions in the order of Ca2+ > Mg2+ > Na ~ K.

Mineral occurrences of the Hillgrove Au-Sb-W district are hosted in late Palaeozoic polydeformed, hornfelsed metasediments and Permo-Carboniferous granitoids of the NewEngland Orogen. In excess of 204 individual occurrences have been identified to date with the mineralisation developed as strike extensive (>20 km of known veining) and potentially depth extensive steeply dipping fissures. These are contained within an elongate area measuring some 9 km by 6 km in surface dimensions. Recorded gold production of 720 000 ounces along with current resources in the order of 340 000 ounces highlight the significance of this district. Historical antimony production is estimated at in excess of 50 000 metric tonnes. Significant tungsten of over 2000 t in the form of scheelite has also been produced from the field. Mineralisation is developed in veins, vein breccias, sheeted veins, network stockworks and as alteration sulfide haloes to the main structures. The vast majority of fissures are subvertical and vary in widths of up to 20 m in places. Paragenetic studies have previously indicated that the earliest mineralising event was a scheelite-bearing phase of quartz veining. Subsequent phases of arsenopyrite-pyrite-quartz-carbonate veining were accompanied by gold and minor base metal sulfides. Alteration is typically sericite-ankerite-quartz. Overprinting stibnite-quartz veining with gold-electrum, aurostibite and arsenopyrite form an important subsequent phase. Veining can be inferred from historical records to extend for vertical depths of over 1 km.

The gold treatment plant of Great Western Consolidated N.L. is at Bullfinch, Western Australia, 22 miles north of Southern Cross, which is 100 miles west of Kalgoorlie. A railway to Southern Cross connects the mine with the main Perth-Kalgoorlie line.The plant, which commenced operations on the 31st October, 1952, was, designed by Messrs. Alex: Stewart & Co. in consultation with the technical staff of Western Mining Corporation Ltd. to treat 1,000 long tons a day, made up of approximately equal parts of quarry oxidized ore and underground sulphide ore, by moderately coarse grinding (2-3 per cent plus 65 mesh Tyler) and straight cyanidation without straking. The design had to allow for future treatment of all sulphide ore at the rate of 40,000 tons per 28-day periodand to make provision for the possible later inclusion of preaeration treatment.The test work on .which design was based was done on representative development samples, the mine being divided into zones for this purpose, to check possible local variations from average treatment behaviour. Proposed mill feed mixtures were made up from time to time for complete ore dressing tests, which were conducted in the Western Mining Corporation laboratory at Kalgoorlie.The chief feature of the design was that the plant had to handle the extremes of very soft, poor settling and filtering oxidized ore and very hard, good settling and filtering sulphide ore. On one hand, crushers and mills had to be large enough to handle the sulphide ore and on the other, thickeners and filters had to be large enough to handle the oxidized ores.The design is marked by simplicity, the use of large units of equipment, and flexibility to cope with a variety of ores.

Completing its historical role the opera tion of copper blast furnace of the Saganoseki Smelter was terminated in 1970, but it left some interesting data on metal lumps formed at the furnace bottom. Analysis disclosed the lumps to be speiss containing 100 to 10,000 g/t of Au and Ag and stratified to iron speiss and copper speiss. Solidifying temperatures of iron speiss and copper speiss being approximately 1,090¦C and 800¦C respectively, copper speiss precipitated at the lower side. The distribution coefficient of Au and Ag between matte and speiss (g/t Au(Ag) in matte / g/t Au(Ag) in speiss) is in the range of 1 x 10 2 to 2 x 10 ' and 1 x 10 1 to 5 respectively. The higher Cu % is in speiss, the-more An and Ag are distributed into speiss. Except for a few data, these results comfotm well to the range of distribution equilibria of Au and Ag in matte and speiss systems by Gerlach and Others.

When a highly anisotropic or weak rock mass is subjected to high-stress conditions, it can lead to large ongoing deformations or squeezing ground conditions. Squeezing ground conditions can impose increased support costs, delays associated with rehabilitation, and disruption to production schedules. Ultimately, in more severe cases, it may result in complete drive closure. Several recent case studies investigated the squeezing mechanism and measures to control squeezing ground in underground mines and also to design appropriate ground support systems. Effective management of squeezing ground conditions requires a sound understanding of the failure mechanism and the driving forces. Once the failure mechanism is understood, the appropriate ground support system should be tailored to specifically manage the critical driving forces that control the squeezing mechanism. Support type, support stiffness, reinforcement length, support density, installation times and mining sequence all have important impact on the effectiveness of the support system. This paper provides a case study at the Ballarat Gold Mine in Australia, where drive squeezing was associated with foliated ground conditions located below 700 m depth. Numerical modelling was used to better understand the failure mechanism and the driving forces that lead to squeezing conditions. The effectiveness of various support types was compared to installed ground support performance. This has provided a credible methodology for assessing and optimising the selection of reinforcement in squeezing ground conditions. CITATION:Talebi, R, Roache, B and Vakili, A, 2018. During the latter part of 1936, conditions encountered in sinking the Main Ore shaft made it impractical and uneconomical to continue deepening it to serve haulage levels below the present No. 5 level. Plans were therefore made for an interior shaft, to serve new lower levels, that terminated above No. 5 level so that ore hoisted could be drawn off on this level and transported to the Main Ore shaft for final conveyance to the mill crude ore bin. The No. 2 interior ore shaft was only developed below No. 4 level and borehole ropeways with a winder located on the surface were installed in preference to an underground winder installation. No. 2 ore shaft with borehole ropeways commenced lead ore hoisting operations in September 1938. Apart from the copper ore hoisted in the war years of 1943-46, lead ore was hoisted to No. 5 level until September, 1951.

The purpose of the Lower Lea Valley Cable Tunnel project is to relocate the overhead power lines circuits, which currently cross the proposed site for the 2012 London Olympics in East London. This was the first contract to be awarded as an Olympic project and is on the critical path for the proposed Olympic Park as the construction of the Olympic village, stadium and other venues cannot begin until the tunnels are complete, the cables installed and the overhead power lines removed. The tunnelling works for the scheme include two parallel tunnels between Hackney and West Ham. Each tunnel is approximately 6 km in length. One tunnel is 4.15 m ID and connects the National Grid substations. The other is 2.82 m ID and connects the EDF Energy substations. The tunnels were constructed through mixed ground using four earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines. These were driven simultaneously from two drive shafts within a single site. The 12 km of main tunnels were constructed within a year from start to finish, with completion in June 2007. The shafts range between 6 m and 15 m ID. These were constructed using a combination of caisson sinking and underpinning techniques. Dewatering was adopted to suit the groundwater conditions.Other works include the design and construction of the head house buildings, cable and ventilation culverts, mechanical and electrical (M&E) installations and all associated works. In addition to the above, a further 1 km of tunnel and two shafts were added to the project scope connecting the EDF Energy tunnel to the substation at Bow. These additional works provided further challenges to the project to ensure that these works were constructed within the program constraints for the 2012 London Olympics. This involved refurbishing one of the tunnel boring machines from the main EDF Energy tunnel drives and relaunching the machine to construct the Bow tunnel. The Bow tunnel was constructed within two and a half months, with the tunnel boring machine breaking through in August, ahead of schedule. The main challenge presented by this project is the program constraints. This project outlines the requirement for team work between the client, stakeholders, contractor and designer in order to provide program certainty. A close working relationship between the contractor and the designer is required to provide value engineered, time-saving solutions to mitigate the risks associated with the design and construction program.

The Marra Mamba iron ore in FortescueÆs Chichester Range project area occurs as a very flat dipping series of waste shale and iron ore beddings. These beddings vary from millimetre thickness to several metres. The ore material generally exhibits a moderate degree of competence when subjected to ultimate compressive strength (UCS) tests, normally failing at up to 60 Mpa. However, the strength of the beddings is markedly less when subjected to the tensile forces imposed by the cutting action of the surface miner. Two surface miners of differing age and sizes were tested over a period of almost three months. These machines produced a product that had not been subjected to dilution by blasting and of such a size that primary crushing is not required. The machines were able to cut all ferrous material presented to them with varying degrees of success. Material containing higher quantities of manganese were broken but caused catastrophic wearing of the picks. During the trial the volume of material produced by the two machines in various strength materials very closely matched the manufacturerÆs estimates. The major impact on costs per tonne related to the wear on bits, which in turn varied with the bit design and composition. Bit design and composition testing is continuing.

This paper was prepared and translated from the final report of the investigation into the Codelco Chile Salvador DivisionÆs air blast which occurred in the Inca-West area. In this section of the block cave mine, a stable arch formed covering an area of approximately 15 000 m2 . This zone subsequently collapsed producing a massive air blast. The collapse followed a series of planned extraction activities and occurred on 5 December 1999. This paper discusses the cave back arching event and the measures that were taken in order to induce the controlled collapse. This was to minimise risk to personnel, equipment and installations. The results obtained to date are presented.

Although the diesel engine is normally considered a tried and proven power source, many new and exciting diesel design concepts are being evaluated in engine development laboratories around the world. Three such programs currently underway at Cummins Engine Company are discussed. The turbocompound engine converts into power exhaust heat energy which is normally wasted. It does this by incorporating after the turbocharger a low pressure gas turbine which is gear driven to the crankshaft. The adiabatic engine has no conventional cooling system. It converts into useful power most of the heat energy normally rejected to the coolant. The series boost turbocharged engine uses seperate low and high pressure turbochargers to increase engine output and improve transient performance. These design concepts make possible increases in diesel engine thermal efficiency from the current 33 to 38 per cent range to the 50 percent range.
