To respond to ever-increasing challenges, mining companies have been experimenting with new business models and technologies in order to speed mine development, production, processing and transport. The various experiments involve mobile access to data, intelligent sensors, advanced analytics, virtual collaboration, virtual reality, automated equipment, remote operations centres and strategic partnerships. A synthesis of all these components creates a ænetwork effectÆ that can dramatically improve the overall effectiveness the entire operation. The concept of the Network Centric Mine borrows from a variety of industries, including defence, aerospace, aviation, petroleum, utilities and manufacturing. Central to the concept are improvements to the way we connect people, process, information and technology, resulting in a more highly collaborative business model, with roles and processes designed to take advantage of new technology. The components of the mining operation act as a connected network aimed at a common goal, regardless of the boundaries of organisation and location.The design of this new organisational ecosystem needs to take into account the recent advances that enable the æplug and playÆ integrated collaborative environment, including cloud computing, mobile devices and social networking, as well as advances in augmented reality, robotics, geo-location, digital labelling, simulation and analytics. However, the most consistent lesson from other industries is the need to properly enable the behaviour and process changes necessary for success.Benefits from adopting a network centric approach include the more effective use of scarce expertise, improved data and information analysis, reduced process variance, and more informed and faster decision-making. The future of mining will see more technology savvy workers who will drive the adoption of new processes. "Minerals, minerals, minerals. Elements occur in the earth as minerals. If local physical, chemical and structural conditions are conducive to concentrating these minerals to sufficiently high abundances in the earth’s crust, a mineral deposit will form. If technology is available to extract metals from the minerals economically, then you have a mineral resource that will be mined and processed. Determining which minerals are present and quantifying their abundances, textural characteristics (grain size and shape) and how they are intergrown with each other is the realm of the mineralogist. Geologists use this mineralogical data to understand how the mineral deposit formed, how to find high-grade zones within the deposit and where to find other mineral deposits. Metallurgists use this data to design, operate and optimise processing facilities to extract metals from the minerals. The types, quantity and precision/resolution of the mineralogical data required by geologists and metallurgists are different, but are not mutually exclusive of each other. Many narrow-vein gold deposits are characterised by a high to extreme nugget effect and the presence of coarse gold. They rank amongst the most difficult of deposits to produce an accurate and precise resource estimate. This contribution presents a case study from the Nalunaq Gold Mine in Southern Greenland. The mine commenced operation in May 2004 and is currently operating at a rate of 400 tonnes per day, to produce about 100 000 oz gold per annum from a total resource base of 1.2 Moz. Mineralisation is characterised by quartz veins that are hosted within a shear zone that is continuous over about 1000 m. The principal orebody is the Main Vein structure, which ranges up to 3 m in width, maintains an average dip of 35¦SE, and contains significant gold grades (1000s g/t Au). Gold particles are often visible, with 25 per cent being greater than 250 microns in size. Variography using underground development samples indicates a nugget effect of about 75 per cent. For the 2005 resource estimate, a 2D metal accumulation ordinary kriged block model was used to produce a global grade for the Target and South Blocks of the Main Vein. Grade control chip-channel samples are collected from æshantyÆ drive footwalls, and used as the basis for both the kriged block model and to determine the grade of individual stope blocks by peripheral weighted averages. Geology plays a key role in mining efficiency, given the locally variable nature of the ore zone.

This paper on the relation of Granite and Sedimentary Contacts to Victorian Mining will, it is hoped, be of interest to members of the Institute.The broad fact that gold often occurs' at or near the junction of granite with sedimentary silurian or metamorphic rocks has been noted by some Victorian geologists, miners, and prospectors; but the fuq practical value -of the fact does not seem to have been fully realised by prospectors. Glancing at the Geological" Map of Victoria, one can see that many of our goldfields 'are situated at or near the junction of granite with Palceozoic sedimentary formations, and that some of our alluvial fields are on granite. Many prospectors are possessed of this knowledge but when prospecting a contact locality, they would be just as likely to confine their search for auriferous matrices to spots a quarter of a mile on the sedimentary side, as on the actual contact line of two formations.

Rock burst is common in deep underground excavations and is characterised by a violent ejection of block rocks from excavation walls. It is critical to understand the phenomenon of rock burst and particularly the failure mechanism. Laboratory experiments are one of the ways. For that purpose, a rock burst laboratory test system was developed at the State Key Laboratory for Geomechanics and Deep Underground Engineering at the China University of Mining and Technology, Beijing. A true triaxial test system, designated the Deep Underground Rock Burst Analogue Test Machine, was developed, which can transfer a stress state from three-direction-compression on six surfaces to the compression on five surfaces with one set free. The rock burst experimental system comprises an acquisition of acoustic emission signals, a high-speed recording in order to accurately record the kinetic characteristics of rock fragments ejected during a rock burst event and the possibility of infrared thermography showing the surface temperature of the samples. In this paper, analyses of typical results from rock burst tests are presented with a description of the obtained results. The mechanisms of rock burst are illustrated, and a rock burst classification is proposed based on these laboratory tests. For the control of rock burst, the constant resistance, large deformation (CRLD) bolt or anchor is presented for accommodating the large displacement of surrounding rock masses and absorbing the impact of the sudden release of rock burst while outputting a constant resistant force in response to the external load. The CRLD bolt or anchor has had practical applications in underground mines. During a period of twelve months between FY18-19, a series of trials were conducted to compare production drilling accuracy using two different methodologies, and the subsequent impact this had on stope performance (dilution and recovery). Testing was conducted at a series of underground mines in Australia. The drill rig’s existing alignment processes were compared to a new technology system, with the following observations: • The new technology was proven to limit rig alignment error, thereby reducing average blasthole deviation, resulting in an increase in the number of holes drilled within tolerance by up to 160%. • The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution significantly by reducing over-break of subgrade ore, whilst also increasing drilled meters (faster stope-cycle time), reducing the bridged tonnes ratio, and facilitating the capture of previously uneconomical stopes. A cost-benefit analysis extrapolated from each of the trials showed the extent to which the new technology, when applied to production data, reduced average dilution, increased ore recovery as well as general drill and blast productivity. In one such trial, the new technology was proven to have reduced average dilution by net 45.4%, which if applied to a full year’s production data, would result in AUD8.2M additional ore recovered, with AUD4.5M less spent on wasted cost of haulage and processing of diluted ore. As a result, return per tonne would increase 22%, from AUD87 to AUD106. This improvement was maintained over the following 12 months – reducing average dilution from 22% in FY17 to 12.1% in FY19.

Ballarat Goldfields NL is developing an exploration decline at Ballarat East using a Mitsui Miike S-125 roadheader. To-date, 530 in of advance has been achieved at an average rate of 16.1 m/week. Roadheader availability has averaged 94.3 per cent, and pick consumption has averaged 0.016 per m. Ground support has involved pattern rockbolting with split sets, 100 mm thick fibre reinforced shotcrete, and steel sets as required. The slower than expected advance rate has mainly been due to difficult ground conditions. It is expected that a further 970 in of decline will be mechanically excavated before a drill and blast system becomes more economical.

The common notion that the Box Hole Bore mineralization represents a variant of the Mississippi Valley type, has not been supported by the present investigation. Most of the common characteristics of Mississippi Valley type, namely 1. saturated saline brines; 2. low temperature domain; 3. mineralization in intraformational breccias and collapsed anticlinal structures; 4. hydrocarbon-rich or foetid carbonates, and 5. very simple geochemistry seem not to be applicable. The Box Hole Bore mineralization features: 1. moderately saline brines (18% NaCl); 2. very high temperature (495¦-520¦C) and low density brines, of critical vapour:water ratio and low pressure of formation (700 bars); 3. mineralization confined by faults and ex- tending laterally into carbonates of high pore volume such as stromatolitic dolo- mites; 4. ore environment characterized by oxidizing conditions, such as ferruginous carbonate and silica sands of high energy environment (heavy mineral banding) and 5. more complex geochemistry than is normal for Mississippi Valley type deposits (copper sulphosalts, and appreciable silver content). Additionally, the ore has un- usual textures formed by the replacement of carbonates and barite by large idiomorphic galena crystals. The pressure and temperature domains of the Box Hole Bore mineralization indicate post- Devonian emplacement and local high heat flow, possibly related to the Alice Springs Orogeny. Because of high lead and zinc trace element con- tents (100-600 ppm) of the carbonates, even out- side mineralized areas, it is possible that the mineralizing fluids have derived their metal con- tent from a local source, possibly aided by evap- oritic concentrations of the tidal to supratidal sequences. The new model for Box Hole Bore gives treater importance to the confining faults.

Joint ventures exist as a means of sharing risks and obeying regulations. An unincorporated joint venture allows a company to take a share only of a project yet allows that company to treat such share as though it were an integral part of the company. The nature of the risks inherent in many ventures is described and comparisons made with alternative corporate vehicles. Different procedures for managing joint ventures are also reviewed and the types of problem encountered in establishing and operating joint ventures are discussed. The basic characteristics of successful joint ventures, in Australia, are listed and a conclusion reached that, despite its difficulties, the joint venture will continue to proliferate as a corporate vehicle for project development.

Titanium tetrachloride may be reduced to trichloride with hydrogen on a hot tungsten filament and other hot: surfaces. The effect of temperature, time and size of t.he filament on the rate of reaction has been studied. A laboratory unit for preparing a few pounds of trichloride at a time is described. The yield of trichloride is 2·2 - 2·4 gm/sq. cm. of hot surface/hour at 1,000°C. and the energy requirement 3'5-4 kWh/pound of trichloride produced.'INTRODUCTIONThe lower chlorides of titanium (titanium tri- and dichlorides) are amenable to electrolysis, being electrovalent in nature. Furthermore, relative to other oxygen-free titanium salts, they are easy to prepare in a pure state and their use has been investigated to prepare titanium. Hypogene alteration zones have been described as a precursor to high-grade haematite deposits in Australia, Brazil and elsewhere. This alteration is described as being below or distal and is typically magnetite-carbonate-silicates reflecting Mg - Fe metasomatism. This paper describes, without genetic implication, the mineral zonation and possible structural control on mineralogic variation within the Tilden Mine, a concentrating grade haematite deposit in Michigan, USA. In contrast to the high-grade deposits, these variations are not peripheral to the orebodies but are the ore. The deposit occurs within the Negaunee Iron Formation, along the southern margin of the Paleoproterozoic Marquette Range Supergroup basin. The regional structure is a fault-bounded west plunging syncline within the crustal scale Great Lakes Tectonic Zone, which forms the boundary between Archean granite-greenstone and gneissic terranes. Local structure consists of second-order anticlines and synclines with variable northwest and southwest plunges. The interaction of sedimentation and diagenesis within growth fault controlled basins, along with a possible metamorphic and/or hydrothermal overprint has resulted in a complex series of ore types. For modelling purposes, the deposit is divided into geologic domains based on both lithology and metallurgical response in the laboratory and in the plant. Mineralogic variation is recognised within individual mineral grains; at blast pattern (10 - 15 m) and development drill hole (100 m) scales.

Liquidus surfaces in a part of the systems ZnO-PbO-Si02 and ZnO-"FeO"-SiO 2 were constructed by the quenching method. The ex- periments were carried out in air in the system ZnO-PbO-Si02. In the part investigated the primary phases were three ternary compounds (PbO.ZnOòSiO2, 2PbOòZnO.2SiO2 and barysilite), three lead silicates, Zn2SiO4 and SiO2. Iso- therms on the liquidus surface of each primary phase field were determined from 750 to 1300¦C. In the system ZnO-"FeO"-SiO 2 the experiments were carried out in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen. In the part investigated the primary phases were Fe2SiO4, Zn2SiO4 and Si02. Iso- therms on the liquidus surface of each primary phase field from 1150 to 1300¦C and the ternary eutectic (1130¦C, 15.9% ZnO, 48.2% "FeO" and 35.9% Si02) were determined.

The Drummond Basin is a large intracratonic basin which developed in central Queensland during Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous times. It is postulated that the Drummond Basin developed as a foreland basin, to the west of a probable west dipping continental margin volcanic arc and subduction zone. The Drummond Basin sequence has been s,ibdivided into three tectono-sedirnentary cycles. Cycle I forms the base of the sequence and comprises thick sequences of intermediate to felsic volcanics and proximal volcanolithic sediments. The volcanics, particularly in the northeast of the basin, occur in separate sub-basins around what were probably isolated eruptive centres. In contrast, the rocks of Cycle 2 and Cycle 3 have been deposited during episodes of broad, basin wide subsidence. Five major igneous episodes, some of which may be co-magmatic, are recorded in the eastern Drummond Basin and environs between the Late Devonian and the Early Permian. The first and second episodes occurred during the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous and are represented by the volcanics in Cycle 1 and Cycle 3. The third episode involves the intrusion of granitoids of Early Carboniferous age into the Drummond Basin sequence. These occur in the Ukalunda area and are related to gold mineralisation at Ukalunda and Valhalla. Episode four includes the felsic volcanics of the Bulgonunna Volcanics. This episode does not appear to he broadly auriferous but gold mineralisation does occur in possible basal Bulgonunna Volcanics at Mount Coolon. The final episode includes a suite of granitic intrusives which intrude the Bulgonunna Volcanics and which are considered to be co-magmatic with them. These intrusives do not appear to be generally associated with gold mineralisation. Gold mineralisation is widespread in the north- eastern Drummond Basin and environs. It is probable that the gold mineralisation is concentrated in epithermal cells during the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous volcanic cycles. This style of mineralisation appears to be related to tectonic setting in modern analogues.

In response to the implementation of a new schedule for iron ore fines in the International Maritime OrganizationÆs (IMO) International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code, improved measures for the management of moisture have been developed. In particular, prediction of cargo moisture allows management of iron ore fines within the supply?chain to facilitate the safe?shipping of iron ore fines.An ARIMA model, augmented to allow for shipment tonnage, has been developed to predict the moisture level from previous shipments of the same product. The model explains about 60 per cent of the moisture variance. It was found that inclusion of other available information, such as ore composition, train/rake assays and recent rainfall at port and mine, did not add to the predictive power of the model.CITATION:Everett, J E, Linden, D and Maney, P, 2013. The Ban Houayxai mine (BHX) is a relatively low-grade, low-cost, open pit gold-silver deposit in Laos operated by Phu Bia Mining, a subsidiary of PanAust. The ore production rate at BHX is 4.5 Mt/a, with direct tipping to a semi-autogenous grinding/ball mill circuit with a carbon-in-leach process plant. Approximately 100 000 oz of gold is produced per annum.The operation is located in mountainous terrain with minimal run-of-mine stockpiling. This results in limited capacity for blending from stockpile, with the mill instead reliant upon direct feed ex-pit. Since commissioning in 2012, the plant has seen significant variation in milling rates due to variability in the feed properties of the oxide, transition and primary ores. As part of an ongoing continuous improvement program, an integrated approach was initiated, focusing on maintaining and enhancing production in the future as the proportion of harder primary ore increases. This will specifically focus on direct blending from the loading face using the ore properties and blast fragmentation to maintain mill throughput.This approach was based on the concept of physical assets management, commencing with improving information and knowledge of the condition of the orebody through modelling the characteristics, variability and performance of the feed for processes relevant to throughput. These models are used to support both mine and process plant production planning.The key ore feed characteristics and parameters modelled for the life-of-mine are blastability index, powder factor, crushability or impact resistance and grindability. These predictive spatial models were based on the data from diamond drill holes used in resource definition and geotechnical drilling programs by integrating geotechnical, geological, geochemical and metallurgical data.At the early stages of implementation, the models are being utilised for ore blending decisions to provide guidance and support for budgeting, long-term mine planning, blast design for mill feed and providing the mill with an expectation of performance.CITATION:Jackson, J, Gaunt, J and Astorga, M, 2014. Mine and ore beneficiation wastes and smelter contaminated soils often cause phytotoxicity and threaten adverse environmental effects if not remediated. Science has clarified both the risks from soil metals and methods to alleviate those risks that can be applied at low cost. Phytoremediation is a family of plant and agronomy based technologies to deal with environmental aspects of sites requiring remediation. If valid risk assessment indicates that metals comprise risk, phytostabilisation may be used to alleviate that risk for most contaminated sites. In particular, Zn-Pb, Cu and Ni mine and smelter sites are readily remediated by making the soil calcareous and fertile, with added organic and metal sorbent amendments that include soil microbes to ‘revitalise’ the soil. In each case, the soil fertility and causes of phytotoxicity should be clarified by agricultural soil extractions, and the combination of amendments required to improve fertility and reverse phytotoxicity identified and found locally. In contrast with phytostabilisation, phytoextraction/phytomining uses rare metal hyperaccumulator plants and agronomic management to maximise annual phytoextraction of soil elements into plant shoots for harvest, ashing and use as a metal ore. Plants that accumulate more than two per cent Ni in shoots, and yield 10–20 t ha-1 dry biomass yield 200–400 kg Ni ha-1, which has value greater than all common agricultural crops. Considering the value of elements, existence of hyperaccumulator plants and demonstrated agronomic management for Ni phytomining, it is clear that mine sites and Ni mineralised subore-grade serpentine soils can be phytomined economically as an agricultural mining technology. A team developed agronomic methods and improved cultivars of Alyssum, which can be profitably grown on temperate zone Ni mineralised or contaminated soils. Plant species for tropical ultramafic soil materials have been identified. The Central Victorian Goldfield is a world-class field located in Victoria, Australia. It is currently undergoing a revival through activities in the Bendigo, Ballarat, Tarnagulla, Maldon, Castlemaine and other fields. Sediment-hosted auriferous gold-quartz reefs that are structurally and geometrically complex dominate the region. To date, no remote methods have been developed to assist in the targeting of the discrete high-grade oreshoots that characterise the mineralisation. An understanding of the structural setting and controls, and thus likely frequency of repetition of oreshoots remains the main exploration tool. Gold within the reefs is generally characterised by both its coarse nature (>100 up to 10 000 microns) and erratic distribution; as a result, most of the Victorian deposits are classed as high- to extreme-nugget effect systems. This characteristic ensures that mineralisation is very challenging to explore, evaluate and exploit. The key issues facing the explorer and miner are related to effective sampling, and definition of geological and grade continuity, and ultimately grade and tonnage. Tonnage can often be estimated to a reasonable level of confidence, whereas the grade estimate generally carries a medium- to high-level of uncertainty. In these deposits, surface diamond drilling alone is generally only able to define an Inferred Mineral Resource, with underground development, closely spaced in-fill drilling and bulk sampling/trial mining required to define Ore Reserves. The extraction of gold from ores is relatively simple, based on the coarse nature and hence amenability to gravity recovery. Ground conditions and the need for in-stope grade control (eg mapping, sampling etc), generally point toward mechanised cut-and-fill as the primary stoping method in the region. To potential investors this style of mineralisation has been viewed as high risk, because of the associated low confidence in the grade estimate, general paucity of Ore Reserves at mining start-up and need for underground development at the Feasibility Stage.

Underground mine planning is characterised by a series of designs, starting with prefeasibility and culminating in operational. Information on the mineralisation and geotechnical conditions is available in increasing levels of detail, as development occurs. In the recently completed AMIRA Planning and Rapid Integrated Mine Optimisation (PRIMO) project, a methodology for producing good strategic and then tactical designs using new optimisation tools, was developed. At the strategic level, fundamental decisions must be made such as those relating to cut-off grade, bench heights, mining methods, access and haulage systems, properties of the mill, etc. The inputs are the block and financial models, geotechnical data, infrastructure and production costs, etc. Stope definition for strategic designs includes bench RLs (relative levels), orebody envelopes, and design and placement of amalgamated or simplified stopes. If multiple mining methods are under consideration, then stopes need to be associated with these. Access design must take into account decisions such as declines versus shafts, a template for level layouts and the topology of the access network. Some of the geotechnical and physical constraints are relaxed for strategic design stages. Strategic scheduling is high level, from a month to a year at a time. In the PRIMO project, software tools have been developed enabling the mine planner to rapidly produce a large number of such strategic designs. After the designs have been evaluated, the highest value designs are chosen and a small number of these can then be further refined at a tactical level. For these designs, the first step is determination of all stopes meeting physical and geotechnical requirements and constraints, allowing for complex stope shapes. Next, detailed layout of the mine access network is obtained, satisfying all operational and geotechnical constraints. Finally, more detailed scheduling is performed, over shorter time periods. The Melbourne University group has focused on optimal access design. In particular, the access network is optimised for minimum cost, taking into account the cost of haulage and development over the lifetime of the mine. Costs vary over the different parts of the network depending on the quantity of haulage and so a weighted network optimisation problem has to be solved. We have developed two software tools for this task, decline optimisation tool (DOT) and planar underground network optimiser (PUNO). DOT produces an optimal network of declines and crosscuts connecting access points on the levels to a portal or break-out point from existing infrastructure. PUNO designs the level layout, including footwall and hanging wall drives, development drives and connections to vent raises. A survey will be given of the capabilities of DOT and PUNO when used on some recent case studies. Our current goals include incorporating some aspects of ventilation design and modelling the development costs when additional ground support is required. This is an abstract only. Gold-silver mineralization at Cracow and Ukalunda in Queensland comprise quartz-filled veins, fissures and breccia zones hosted by propylitically altered volcanics and epizonal intrusions which are strongly fractured. The terrestrial volcanic facies, structural setting, type of alteration and complex mineralogy suggest these deposits are of the epithermal type.The 180 depleted character of the wall-rocks is consistent with the involvement of meteoric waters in convective hydrothermal cells associated with the vulcanism. The Cracow quartzes have remarkably low 6180 values from -2.0 to -3.4 per mil typical. of meteoric hydrothermal systems at high latitude, consistent with the inferred position of Australia during the Permian. 6180 values for the Ukalunda quartzes exhibit a wide range from 5.1 to 14.9 per mil which reflect the mixing of magmatic and meteoric waters, and a steep geothermal gradient.Further stable isotope and geochemical studies are in progress to establish the scale and morphology of the zones of anomalous 6180 and mineralogy in the wallrocks which constitute significant exploration targets.

Northern Star Resources (NSR) operates several seismically active mines as part of its Kalgoorlie Operations. In order to successfully continue mining at depth in increasing stress conditions, strategies need to be developed to reduce, control and manage the impact of seismicity causing damage to the rock mass. Consequently, a research partnership was developed with the WA School of Mines (WASM) through Mining3. The main aim of the project was to develop appropriate ground support standards that could withstand the expected dynamic response with minimal to no rehabilitation required for the life of that excavation. The project utilised a design methodology for determining the required energy demand based on detailed geotechnical mapping, probabilistic analysis of wedge formation and an estimate of rock ejection velocity based on uniaxial compressive strength of the intact rock (Villaescusa et al. 2016). The ground support scheme consists of high tensile chain link mesh, resin encapsulated de-coupled posimix bolts and plain strand cable bolts, in one, or multiple passes together with plain shotcrete. Implementation of the design posed several challenges including how to install the chain link mesh, maintaining the required productivity, ensuring quality control, and understanding the interaction of the several ground support components within the scheme. The implementation of the system within a trial area was successful from development mining to open stope extraction. The most significant field verification of the system occurred with near field M+1.9 seismic occurring in proximity to an operating long-hole drill. Despite large displacements exceeding 0.5m in places, there was no significant ejection of rock or failure of the ground support system. Following the successful trial, the ground support design methodology and standards have been implemented across several NSR sites. The system forms the basis for the successful extraction of resources in future high seismic risk areas.
