‘Every mine is a pilot’ is an attitude which encourages the mining paradox of optimistic mine plans and equipment under performance; propped up by an environment lacking accountability. The premise that ‘every mine is a pilot’, appears to underlie the development and operating approach to most mines. It is the hypothesis of this paper that many mining companies, development teams and their managers largely ignore what is done elsewhere. Anecdotally, most planners don’t know whether the selected rates are high or low (rates based on theoretical models tend to be high – certainly higher than what most companies can achieve). Mines then consistently operate the equipment at rates well below targets; often more than 20 per cent below. Further to this paradox, mine performance data demonstrates the average mine is currently operating their equipment at levels of output not much more than half the output of those in the top ten per cent. On the whole mines don’t know the potential of their equipment and therefore don’t put appropriate plans in place to do better. After all, when ‘every mine is a pilot’ there is little reason to look to one’s peers for an indication of potential. This paper will outline why every mine is not a pilot and how mines do value some knowledge, but not as much as they should. This paper proposes a two-pronged approach to address this issue in the area of equipment performance. This approach is to:1. engage in better forecasting of equipment rates and better subsequent performance through benchmarking against industry standards2. provide conditions for more accountability.These parameters are linked and proper implementation of them will address the losses which many shareholders and financiers have incurred when investing in companies with unrealistic mining plans.CITATION:Lumley, G I, 2016. Using normal low pressure filtration methods for the dewatering of fine china clays, the best that can be achieved is cakes with about 30% moisture. In order to get the moisture levels down to acceptable levels the traditional method used is thermal drying, which is both costly and dust creating. It was to improve this process that ECC International embarked upon a programme of development of filtration equipment using high pressure to achieve significantly lower moisture levels. This development work investigated several design philosophies and culminated in the production of two quite different solutions. The High Pressure Plate Press uses round plates / chambers of one metre diameter and a filtration pressure of 70 bar. This press is fully automatic and produces a surface dry cake that has sufficient plasticity for the further processing that is required on specific qualities of china clay. The TUBE PRESS on the other hand uses a unique design configuration and operates at a filtration pressure of 100 or 140 bar, depending upon the model. The TUBE PRESS produces a brittle, surface dry cake that is easy to handle and a filtrate that is usually crystal clear. The TUBE PRESS achieves a much higher degree of separation than is possible with conventional equipment, which is particularly important if the filtrate is the product. Over the past 15 years plants incorporating both HP Plate Presses and TUBE PRESSES have been installed in the china clay operations of ECC International and are giving excellent trouble free service. The TUBE PRESS has also proved to be extremely versatile, effectively dewatering a wide range of fine particled slurries, in a number of diverse industries.

A gold mine in north-eastern Africa has expanded throughput from 5 to 10 Mt/y in recent years. The original carbon regeneration kiln was incapable of achieving required throughput or meeting process conditions to reactivate the carbon due to heavy fouling by high molecular weight frothers and collectors. A new high temperature kiln was required.The design criteria for the carbon reactivation kiln and associated equipment were revised, then implemented in close cooperation with a kiln vender who had previously supplied kilns operating successfully on highly fouled carbon. The result is a whole facility, holistically designed to achieve the technical criteria.The new carbon reactivation facility has been operating since 1 July 2014. What have we learned? What has performed to expectations? What could be done better?This paper presents lessons learnt regarding the design, implementation, operation and maintenance of the Ausenco Carbon Reactivation Kiln. ‘Lessons’ are associated with threats and opportunities (risks) that have that have been realised. In pursuit of optimising the cemented rockfill system fragmentation of the aggregate, while travelling through the surface-to-underground aggregate transport raise, was investigated and a æfines estimationÆ equation was determined. When used with the rockfill strength estimation equation, the fines estimation equation enables an accurate estimation of the compressive strength to be derived theoretically. Optimum fill raise orientation was examined and recommendations are given depending on the varying stope dimensions. If the maximum dimension of the stope is less than 30.5 m (100 ft), a single, centrally located fill raise will suffice. However, as the stope dimensions increase, the number and orientation of the fill raises becomes more complicated and each stope must be examined on an individual basis.

Rampura Agucha Pb-Zn Mine (RAM) is located about 200 km to the south-west of Jaipur in the state of Rajasthan, India. Open pit mining operations commenced in 1988 and continued to 2018. RAM open pit footprint is the largest in India with length of 2000 m, width 1500 m and depth of 400 m. Development of an underground mine under the operating pit commenced in 2013, through trial mining longhole open stoping with cemented backfill was established as a preferred mining method. Nine years in operations underground mine has reached the production capacity of 4.5 MT, which represent more than 70 per cent of the ore volume mined by the pit. RAM is currently the world second largest underground Pb-Zn mine.

This paper describes the possibility of the application of flotation to the separation of monazite from xenotime and of columbite from ferberite, which have been said to be difficult with generally used physical beneficiation methods. For Malaysian monazite and xenotime samples, a great difference is observed between the flotation recoveries at pH 7.5 using 1.0 x 10-4mol/1 dodecylammonium chloride (DAC). The grade and recovery of columbite in the binary flotation with both minerals result in 85 per cent and 67 per cent in the cleaning froth and 91 per cent and 51 per cent in the re-cleaning froth, without adding any scavenging stages. For monazite samples from various localities, the flotability is dominated by the electrostatic interaction between mineral surface and collector ion using DAC as collector, but the singular decrease of flotation is observed in the sample of which the crystallinity is low and the surface structure is rugged and complex. Otherwise, ferric ion in the flotation system probably dissolved from mineral is found to activate the flotation using sodium dodecylsulfate as collector. For columbite and ferberite, the separation is judged possible at pH 3.0 using 1.0 x 10'3mo1/l sodium oleate (NaOl) from the single flotation results of each mineral. In the binary flotation, however, columbite recovery in the froth is greatly diminished below that expected. This would be because NaOl is prevented from adsorbing on the columbite surface of which the charge is transformed more negative side by the specific adsorption of the tungstate ion dissolved from ferberite.

Inadequate goaf gas control may lead to gas exceedances in the ventilation return air, which will trip power in longwalls and cause production stoppage. To effectively control gas emissions, Australian mines heavily rely on drilling vertical goaf holes to capture coalmine methane before it migrates to mine openings. The wide application of goaf gas drainage may change the goaf pressure distribution, lead to more ventilation air leakage, and consequently increase gas explosion and spontaneous combustion risks. This paper focuses on analysing goaf gas drainage production data from a case study longwall mine in Australia. The correlation between suction pressure, total flow rate, gas flow rate and air leakage rate were analysed in detail as the face-to-hole distance changes. Suction pressure is found to be positively correlated with total flow rate, and their correlation also varies at different goaf locations due to various goaf compaction and flow resistance. This paper also proposed a theoretical method to calculate the goaf resistance of ventilation air leakage pathways. Based on several basic assumptions and different goaf drainage scenarios, the leakage airflow pathway resistance in the goaf at different face-to-hole distances can be calculated. The model results suggested that the resistance of air leakage pathways from the working face to individual goaf holes increased with the face-to-hole distance. The resistance results can also be used to calculate the corresponding permeability at the same position, which can be used as input data for CFD or Ventsim models.

The Lafarge Marblehead Plant in Marblehead, Ohio, USA produces 4.2 million tonnes of sized aggregate yearly. In 1997, a program was instituted to maximise primary crusher productivity through the optimisation of blasting variables and procedures. A proprietary blasting shot report database and the Lafarge production database was statistically analysed to provide guidance in the program. Blasting powder factor (kg/m3) was the main control variable utilised to increase crusher throughput. In 2005, the program was refined to increase the production of certain high margin aggregate sizes and the reduction of fines. The principal blasting component affecting the percentage of high margin size production appears to be pattern area (burden and spacing area). This can be coupled with powder factor to optimise the production rate of high margin aggregate sizes. The size optimisation program incorporates the blasting shot report database, Lafarge production database, statistical analysis and aggregate sampling. A preliminary indication is that the production of high margin sizes (12.7 mm X 4.8 mm, 24.4 mm X 12.7 mm, and 50 mm X 25.4 mm) has been increased seven to 12 per cent utilising these techniques. As an added benefit, blasting costs have been reduced linearly as burden û spacing pattern areas have increased and powder factors have decreased. The program is ongoing and will investigate other blasting procedures and variables including electronic blasting caps to further increase the production of high margin products. The statistical methods involved in the analysis are described in this article for use in other mines and situations. The methods described can be used to optimise crusher throughput, digging rates and product size.

Several nuclear techniques have been assessed for application to online conveyor belt analysis of oil yield from Rundle oil shale. The most favourable technique is neutron inelastic scattering which determines the total carbon content of bulk shale samples. Correlations of chemical laboratory assays for 540 Rundle oil shale samples show that oil yield can be predicted from total carbon to within 11 litre/tonne.Laboratory experimental work on 17 bulk samples of Rundle oil shale indicated that carbon and oil yield can be determined to within 0.6 wt per cent and 9 litre/tonne, respectively, using the neutron inelastic scatter technique. A practical neutron inelastic scatter gauge for application on a 23 mm thick reinforced conveyor belt could consist of a 5 curie 241 Am-Be neutron source and a 150 mm diameter x 100 mm thick Nal(TI) detector. With this gauge, the analysis time to achieve a counting statistical error of 6 litre/tonne should be about five minutes.

Air quality is a big topic of discussion in regional mining communities as well as urban environments situated close to port terminals handling bulk solids. Community perception of poor air quality can significantly affect the reputation of the mining operation and handling facilities. Dust monitoring for regulatory compliance relies on using a handful of accurate but very expensive sensors, usually situated at the boundary, relatively far from the activities that generate the airborne dust. These reference monitors measure dust leaving the site but dust mitigation and management on-site largely relies on operator judgement. At a fraction of the cost, small wireless solar powered units can be used to supplement reference monitors in real-time. Due to their compact nature, portability and low price, these units can be implemented on a mass scale to increase spatial resolution of dust measurements and, more importantly, in much closer proximity to both the dust generating activity and the sources of dust. This can provide valuable insights into the origins and timing of dust generation thus producing datadriven decision-making while minimising subjectivity. Similarly, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is another supplemental technology that can be used to increase the spatial resolution of dust measurements in near real-time, however, the cost of commercial systems even exceeds that of regulatory monitors. LiDAR also presents difficulties in quantifying dust plume concentrations. This study presents learnings of implementing both technologies for dust emissions management. Several low-cost sensor units and a fast-scanning custom-built 3D LiDAR system operating at a range of 1.5 km with a resolution of 1.5 m were deployed on a surface mine to monitor dust emissions from different activities. The project explores the use of real-time sensor data to quantify LiDAR measurements in parallel with integration into mine planning. The approach can assist in prioritising dust mitigation activities thereby reducing instances of emissions exceedance and minimising water use through databased and targeted application. Demonstrated is an opportunity for a step-change in industry best practice as well as commercialisation and operationalisation of the method across different industries, including future mineral extraction.

It is the role of the exploration geologist to create wealth through the discovery, delineation and characterisation of economic mineralisation. This requires a critical depth of geological understanding.Unfortunately, the resource industry is well known for its cyclic nature. Many of the current generation of workers have only ever experienced the boom of the ‘super-cycle’ and are only just discovering the negative side to the business. For the case of the geologist and especially the exploration geologist, the magnitude of peaks and troughs are usually amplified and may become destructive to all parties. During the uptime a healthy stream of exploration good news becomes the staple diet of company releases, in particular those of junior companies attempting to bolster the share price. The geological knowledge and experience gained thus forms a significant and integral part of the value and therefore, future of a company. On the downturn it is often viewed that geologists are a luxury, an optional extra and a burden on the bottom line with companies entering a period of memory loss and myopia.Retention of geological knowledge however remains critical as projects, companies and cycles mature. Beyond exploration per se, this knowledge becomes both fundamental in de-risking and commercialising an asset (through development or divestment) and in positioning the company for cyclic or counter-cyclic opportunities.The growth and retention of this knowledge base is difficult to quantify in terms of direct value but becomes one of a successful resource companies greatest assets. At worst, its loss can lead to millions of investors’ funds wasted on missed opportunities, drilling, or poorly designed plant and mine.But the rocks are around for the longer haul and pay little notice to the vagaries of the scurrying of Man.This paper reflects on some of the authors own observations through 25 years of iron ore exploration, in why it is critical to always rigorously question the prevailing geological (mis)understanding and the technical and commercial benefits which that may bring, and looks forward to the future.CITATION:Kepert, D, 2015. The solubility of cobalt oxide in iron silicate slags has been measured at 1573 K by equilibration of silica and alumina saturated slags with liquid Co-Au-Fe alloys, and by equilibration of silica unsaturated slag with solid Co-Fe alloys, at oxygen pressures of either 10-9 or 10-10 atm (1 atm = 1.013 x 105 Pa). The activity coefficient of cobalt oxide has been calculated and compared with previous studies.

Investigation of the Classification Operation in a Coal Pulverising Vertical Spindle Mill Coal pulverisation in power plants is a major electrical energy consumer. In 2006 more than 41 per cent of world electricity generation was from coal where pulverisers use 0.5 to 1 per cent of gross generation. Therefore, pulverisers are an important target for optimisation not only for reducing costs of power generation but also for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. A better understanding of the operation of pulverisers is an essential requirement for their optimisation. However, little information is available, other than operating experience, on the performance of pulverisers and how these react to changes in operational variables. This study investigates the effect of changes in coal and airflow feed rates on the classification performance that occurs in an industrial scale ball-and-race vertical spindle mill in which the pulverisation and classification processes are linked together due to the separator classifier being an integral component within the pulveriser. In order to decouple the breakage and classification processes, samples were cut from upward flowing streams through sampling ports drilled on the pulveriser body at different locations. Specific sampling tools were developed. Samples collected from the pulveriser were size and density fractioned to distinguish the differences in behaviour of the components, namely coal and mineral matter. The coal flow rates on dry basis within the mill and around the separator classifier were calculated by mass balancing the multi-component data. The difference in classification behaviour of components during pneumatic transport was confirmed. The response of the circulating load in the mill (~600 to ~1100 per cent) as well as the dependency of fineness of the streams to the operating variables was demonstrated. The approach taken in this study has proved that development of a classification model for a vertical spindle mill pulverising non-homogeneous materials, eg coal, requires treating these materials as multi-component/composite substances.

South Africa has a long history of rockbursts, some 100 years. During this time much research and many developments have taken place in the country to limit the occurrence of rockbursts, and to mitigate their effects. In this paper I shall present a personal view of what I consider to be important achievements, and contributions made. Some of these are: planning of stope layouts, and the use of strike barrier pillars; recognition of energy as a key factor, the use of the energy release rate ERR as a layout planning criterion, and development of MINSIM for calculation of ERR and stope planning; sequential grid stope layouts; use of backfill for stope support; and, development yielding support elements, and dynamic testing of stope and tunnel supports. The record shows the establishment of a rock engineering research powerhouse over a 40 to 50 year period and, unfortunately, the complete breakdown of this capability in the subsequent 10 years.
