Long-hole directional drilling for in-seam exploration was introduced to New Zealand at Huntly West Mine in 1989. Following the success of this initial drilling program the Coal Corporation of New Zealand (CoaICorp) purchased its own drilling equipment and proceeded to adopt the technique with in-housetraining. From July 1991 to September 1992 a total of 15 455 metres was drilled at Huntly West Mine. During this period several modifications were made to the drilling technology to suit the ground conditions. The resulting interpretations of the drill information enabled reliable seam definition to be incorporated in mine planning. Since January 1993, the technique has been transferred to the Huntly East Mine to assist with seam definition for the planned development westwards under the Waikato River. The benefits of this drilling technique to coal mine planning are now well documented in Australia and New Zealand as well as other overseas countries. The possibilities of adapting the long-hole drilling technique to hard rock applications has been illustrated recently with successful cross-measure drilling at Huntly East Mine.

Sustainable closure of coal mines in Australia to a safe, stable, non-polluting condition remains one of the industry’s biggest environmental and social challenges. A significant proportion of mines in the Bowen Basin of Queensland have dispersive spoil. Based on an estimated area of 20,000ha and a rehabilitation cost of AUD$100,000 to AUD$150,000/ha, the instantaneous rehabilitation liability for the Bowen Basin alone is estimated at AUD$2 to $3 billion.Dispersive spoils present problems in post-mining rehabilitated landforms due to increased potential for surface and tunnel erosion, compromising the ability to achieve fundamental mine closure objectives of a safe, stable, non-polluting and self-sustaining post-mining landform (Minserve, 2004). Dispersion results in clay particles being mobilised and transported in water, even at low flow velocities (So et al., 1998; Minserve, 2004), and blocking of soil pores, resulting in surface sealing, crusting and reduced permeability (DNR, 1997; Vacher et al., 2004) which, in turn, further increases runoff (Dang et al., 2018).CITATION:Dale, G, Reardon-Smith, K, Thomas, E, Bennett, J, McCallum, L and Raine, S, 2018. A study of the swelling behaviour of a single batch of high-grade iron ore pellets during hydrogen reduction in a fixed bed showed that the extent of swelling is governed by the nucleation and growth of crystalline iron protuberances from the wüstite grains. Over the reduction temperature range 650 to 1000°C, it was found that substantial degrees of swelling can occur at temperatures in excess of 850°C, and significant variations in the swelling behaviour of individual pellets from different bed levels are observed under these conditions.The results are discussed in terms of a recent swelling theory and shown to be in general agreement.

The banded iron formation-hosted iron ore deposits located in the Hamersley Ranges of Western Australia contain marker shales that are used to distinguish lithology for geological and orebody mapping. These marker shales produce distinctive signatures in the natural gamma downhole logs, which are conventionally manually interpreted. This paper proposes an alternative method of automatically identifying these shales using dynamic time warping (DTW). A Gaussian processes (GPs)-based method for automatic identification is also considered. Both methods are tested on a deposit that contains the Marra Mamba sequence of the Hamersley Province.Both methods were trained to predict the location of the desired shales, and the resulting outputs were compared with a manual interpretation of the results to determine the accuracy. The GP method can identify signatures with an accuracy between 87.0 per cent and 92.0 per cent, which increases to 92.9 per cent and 95.7 per cent where the GP is certain. The DTW method has an accuracy between 90.0 per cent and 91.6 per cent, which increases to 94.0 per cent and 95.4 per cent where the DTW is certain.The GP method has several advantages, including a more automated library building process, a probabilistic output and a shorter run time. However, the DTW method was capable of accepting more distortion in the signature and therefore identified more signatures. This is important in a deposit where the signals are frequently distorted by events such as hydration and folding. The CSIRO acid alumina employs the essential steps of digestion, hydrolysis and calcination to produce pure alumina from ores too high in silica or too low in grade for the Bayer process. The two latter stages have been described in some detail previously but the digestion stage requires separate dis-cussion since ores vary widely in composition and reactivity. Kaolinitic clays require. roasting to 8000C to render the alumina soluble in the 11 per cent sulphuric acid used in the process while some ferruginous laterites require roasting to reduce the reactivity of iron minerals. The iron content of pregnant solutions is kept at a low figure by digesting at temperatures where the solubilities of ferric oxide or basic ferric sulphates are small. A.two-stage, counter-current digestion is necessary to extract a high percentage of alumina from the ores and to pro-duce a basic pregnant liquor, with an S03:Al203 ratio of 1. 9 suitable for high temperature hydrolysis. The second stage of digestion, called the modification stage, treats slightly acid liquors with exces's of ore in the temperature range 1200- 1400C. The first stage operates at 1700-190 C to extract further alumina from modification residues, using recycled acid obtained from later steps of the process. Both temperature ranges are critical for economic operation and for proper con-trol of the iron content of solutions. In batch experiments, thirty minutes is regarded as a suitable retention time for digestion and modification; ores which require much longer than this are less suitable for the process. Impurities. such assilica, titanium and vanadium oxides are discarded in the residue along with iron oxide and do not contaminate the final product. Bivalent metallic sulphates such as MgSO4 can build up in the circuit to a very considerable degree without affecting. product purity.Comparison with other processes shows that the C. S. I. R. O. process is superior for control of contamination by iron, which is the major problem in acid processes. The pure intermediate product (3 A1203. 4 S03. 9 H2O) is also more convenient for cal-cination to alumina than the hydrated aluminium sulphate usually recovered in other processes. Detailed cost comparisons must await pilot-plant evaluation of the C. S. I. R. O. process.

Traditional methods of gold extraction have involved comminution and processing via cyanide leaching, all of which are associated with energy, cost and environmental implications. Subsequently, numerous opportunities for improvement and optimisation strategies in gold mining and processing have been explored, including heap leaching, which has significantly lowered comminution costs. This paper explores the effect of the more energy efficient high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) on the comminution behaviour (especially on the crack density) and cyanide leaching performance of laboratory reactors study on run-of-mine gold ore comprising the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) and the Elsburg Reefs (ER), sourced from Carletonville in the Witwatersrand Basin in South Africa. The ore was comminuted using HPGR at three different pressure settings (120, 90 and 60 bar). Large (-16/+11.2 mm) and small (-5.6/+4 mm) particles of the HPGR product where then mineralogically characterised using optical microscopy, quantitative evaluation of minerals by scanning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN) and X-ray computer tomography (CT) before cyanidation. The results of the leach experiments indicated a correlation between gold extraction, particle size and crack density. Mineralogical characterisation of the ore indicates that the Fe-sulfides present in the VCR are likely to be more reactive than those in the ER, thus having a more favourable influence on gold cyanidation. The Mount Gibson goidmine is located at the southern end of the Retaliation greenstone belt within the Murchison Province, approximately 300 km northeast of Perth, Western Australia. Economic gold mineralization occurs in the upper part of a Tertiary lateritic surface; its ultimate source presumably being Archaean greenstones. Gold is present in the laterite profile over a distance of 4 km in four separate prospects, from north to south, Mount Gibson Well, Midway, Orion and Tobias Find, the two last constituting the Mount Gibson mine. The area has'low relief. A low ridge to the west of the mineralized zone is formed mainly of rubble with minor outcrops of mafic volcanic and intrusive rocks. The terrain slopes gently to the northeast, and the maximum relief, in the vicinity of the mineralization, is about 20 m. The weathering profile comprises, from the surface: (i) soil, windblown sand or colluvium (thin), (ii) laterite; hardcap (including ferricrete and lesser silcrete and calcrete) is overlain by loose nodules and pisolites, and passes downwards into a mottled zone of variably ferruginized clay, (iii) clay; mainly pale brown, cream or yellow in colour, but in places contains relic quartz veins or dark ferruginous zones, (iv) clay with fragments of altered rock; normally grey to pale green in colour but sometimes includes an oxidized iron-rich horizon just above the weathered/fresh rock interface, (v) bedrock. The complete profile varies from 10-100 m thick, averaging 20 m. Zone (ii) is commonly 3-5 m thick. Loose pisolites of this zone fill cavities in the massive ironstone left by former tree roots, and cover irregular depressions which may represent former stream courses. Samples, representing 3 m intervals down the holes, have been collected from cuttings taken from rotary drill-holes along each of four traverses; one traverse at each-of the northern prospects and two traverses in the Orion part of the mine area. These samples have been submitted for X-ray diffraction analysis and for chemical analysis for a wide range of elements. Bedrock lithologies have been determined from microscope studies of bottom-of-hole chips.

New Celebration Gold Mine is located 35 km SE of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, in the Archaean Kalgoorlie-St Ives Greenstone belt. The leases total 119 sq kms and arepart of a joint venture between Newmont Australia Ltd (as manager) and Mt Martin Gold Mines N.L. Mining commenced in August, 1986 and is now producing over 115,000 ounces of gold per annum. A variety of gold mineralisation styles with a total resource of 23.5 million tonnes at 2.19g/t are associated with shear zones at New Celebration. Gold production is co-ordinated from 7 open pits with others planned to com- mence soon. A large scale underground trial mining operation has com- menced with a decline on the hanging wall of the main producing orebody, Hampton Boulder. Millfeed produced is classified on the stockpile according to grade and metallurgical performance and blended tomaximise throughput while main- taining grade through a CIL treatment plant currently operating at 1.7 million tonnes per year.

A rotating magnetic field can be produced in a magnetic separator by using a magnet rotor fitted with alternate north-south magnetic poles, similar to the rotors currently used in modern eddy current separators. Rotation of the magnetic field causes ferromagnetic particles to rotate during magnetic separation. The particle rotation can then be used simply to remove entrapment during a conventional attraction magnetic separation (RMF lift separation), or it can be used to roll particles away from non-rotating particles, and to move them out of the separator under their own rotation (RMF rotation separation). RMF (rotating magnetic field) separation is a separation for ferromagnetic particles. These particles have a very ordered magnetism that is locked into directions of easy magnetisation in the crystal. As a result, if the external field rotates, the particles attempt to rotate with it. RMF separation uses this fact to rotate the ferromagnetic particles in a rotating field. In contrast, paramagnetic particles have a magnetism that can point in any direction with almost equal ease, and these will not rotate in a rotating field. By making use of this difference in magnetic properties, RMF rotation separation can separate ferromagnetic particles from paramagnetic, even when the particles have similar susceptibilities. Some particles such as both chrome spinel and ilmenite can contain ferromagnetic regions within a paramagnetic matrix. These ferromagnetic regions can vary from very small regions dispersed throughout the crystal, through thin lamellae, to larger more bulky regions. Although most natural ilmenite is ferromagnetic and generally has a higher magnetic susceptibility than paramagnetic chrome spinel, the susceptibility ranges for the two minerals overlap considerably (Allen, 2000a) due to the presence of these ferromagnetic elements, frequently making the conventional magnetic separation of these two minerals impractical. It is known that roasting a mixture of ilmenite and chrome spinel particles increases the magnetic susceptibility of the ilmenite while leaving the spinel susceptibility substantially unchanged. This makes the use of conventional (susceptibility attraction) magnetic separation more practical for the separation of these two minerals. However, very little is known about the effects of roasting on the response of ilmenite and spinel particles to a rotating magnetic field. For example, although the optimal ilmenite roasting conditions for conventional magnetic separation are quite well established such conditions may or may not be optimal for RMF rotation separation. Low intensity conventional magnetic separation on the basis of magnetic susceptibility can be made more accurate if it is carried out in a rotating field, because the rapid spinning of the separating particles prevents the formation of magnetic flocs, and reduces entrapment and entrainment. Medium intensity RMF rotation-only separation (no attraction component) has the ability to separate rotating (ferromagnetic) from non-rotating (paramagnetic) particles, irrespective of their relative magnetic susceptibilities. RMF rotation separation is of particular interest in this case because ilmenite particles generally rotate much better than the mainly paramagnetic chrome spinel particles, and roasting could enhance this difference further. Further information on the use of RMF to separate minerals can be found in Allen (2000a; b and c). The aim of this series of tests on a number of Australian ilmenites was to compare some different oxidising and reducing roast methods and to establish whether the use of RMF rotation separation improves the chrome spinel rejection.

In order to meet the increasing demand for coal for their Newcastle Steel Works, the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd., on June 5, 1937, approved of a scheme to sink a tunnel to the Victoria Seam at their Burwood Colliery. This seam was virgin at this locality and lay nominally horizontal at a depth of 320ft. vertical from the surface.For the purpose of despatch of the coal produced it was decided that the tunnel be equipped with a rubber belt conveyor system.This was a comparatively new departure in Australia, and, indeed, was one of the first installations of its kind in the world, designed to raise coal from considerable depth by this means. Later the tunnel was extended to the Borehole Seam, which lay nominally horizontal at a vertical depth of 600ft. from the surface. The whole installation is the subject of this paper.In planning a project of this kind, consideration had to be given to the following:-1. Location of tunnel with regard to existing surface railway sidings and shafts.2. Ultimate tonnage required.3. Width and construction of belt.4. Speed of belt.5. Inclination of belts.6. Mine projects are complex opportunities that demand a constant assessment of uncertainty, ie risk and upside potential. This is because the value of a mine project is typically influenced by many underlying economic and physical uncertainties, such as metal/mineral prices, metal/mineral grades, costs, schedules, quantities, and environmental issues, amongst others, which are not known with much certainty at the beginning of the project. But, is uncertainty an enemy or an ally of the mine planner/analyst? To answer this question, this paper first assesses and elaborates upon the general concept of uncertainty. It then looks at the different sources of uncertainty in a mining project, such as the orebody, costs and product price uncertainties, and their effect on the final project value. Next, a general?review?of current mine evaluation techniques highlighting their limitations when dealing with uncertainty is made. Finally, an extended evaluation and risk management framework that addresses the existing uncertainty in the (greenfield/brownfield) mine evaluation process is proposed. One important characteristic of this framework is that it uses and manages uncertainty in order to generate additional value to the project; this is done through operational and managerial flexibility, which allow mine planners to minimise/maximise project risk/upside-potential giving a more realistic estimate of the projectÆs market value - this is shown in practical and simple examples occurring at different stages of a mine project, such as exploration and operation. Ashanti Goldfields CompanyÆs (AshantiÆs) most recent development is the Geita Project in the Lake Victoria Goldfield of NW Tanzania. It comprises six distinct gold deposits within two mineralised trends: Nyankanga, Lone Cone, Geita Hill (Geita trend) and Matandani, Kukuluma and Area 3 West (Kukuluma trend). Between 1936 and 1966, the Geita area produced an estimated 5.5 M tonnes of ore from five underground deposits at an average recovered grade of 5.3 g/t. The discovery of Nyankanga was made by Ashanti in 1996 from RAB drilling of a +100 ppb Au anomaly in laterite soil above ferricrete cover. The Kukuluma trend was discovered by SAMAX Resources (taken over by Ashanti in 1998) between 1996 and 1997 from RC drilling of a +80 ppb Au laterite soil anomaly. Oxide facies banded iron formation (BIF) of the Upper Nyanzian System forms prominent topographic ridges and is the dominant host lithology for gold mineralisation. The ridges are flanked by felsic tuff units which lie stratigraphically above. Syn-genetic lamprophyre (vogesite) and post-genetic felsic dykes are also seen in the Geita trend. At Nyankanga a granodiorite-diorite suite has intruded as dykes and sills into BIF from a plug centred on a WNW fault and has produced wallrock alteration assemblages similar to those seen in Cu-porphyry systems (potassic, propylitic, etc) as well as sulphide and gold deposition. However, the main ore-grade mineralisation (as in the rest of the Geita trend) is controlled by low-to-medium angle structures dipping north-west and north with numerous splays in the hanging wall. High-grade shoots at Nyankanga plunge to the west and to the north-west, being lithologically and fault-controlled respectively. At Geita Hill the higher grade shoots are controlled by fold noses in BIF dipping to the north. Free gold occurs within fractures of sulphides. The deposits of Kukuluma and Matandani occur on an ancient (possibly Cretaceous) erosional plateau and are related to two WNW to NW trending shear zones, discordant to the local strike of the BIF sequence. Complete oxidation occurs up to 120 m depth and there is a strong supergene component to the gold distribution. Primary gold mineralisation is divisible into two distinct assemblages: arsenopyriteûpyrrhotiteûmagnetiteûchlorite associated with brecciated cherts and pyrite associated with shaley banded ironstones. Area 3W is most likely the fault-displaced extension of the same mineralised trend and comprises thin, intermittent zones of high-grade gold mineralisation occurring adjacent to a ridge in banded cherts and minor BIF. Current resources (measured, indicated and inferred) for the project are estimated at 89.24 Mt at an average grade of 4.17 g/t (11.97 Moz of contained gold) at a 1.0 g/t cut-off grade. Of this 9.83 Moz is within the Geita trend and 2.14 Moz is within the Kukuluma trend. A resource of 2.74 Moz is from an inferred resource at depth at Nyankanga where the viability of an underground operation is being studied. Proven and probable reserves are 49.77 Mt @ 3.46 g/t (5.54 Moz) based on a $325/oz gold price providing a mine life of ten years at an average production rate of 500 000 oz per year. Reserve estimation was carried out using mineable polygons to select resource blocks based on a series of mining and costs parameters. In addition key cost parameters were tested to provide sensitivities for pit optimisations and pathfinders for negotiations with suppliers and contractors. Construction began in March 1999 and first gold is expected to be poured in the second-quarter 2000.

A mining company has entered into contractual commitments to supply certain quantities of its product to clients in each time period. Failure to fulfil its obligations would damage its reputation as a reliable supplier. The planned production would normally be sufficient unless major problems such as highwall failures, roof falls, natural disaster, or strikes that interrupt production or delays in obtaining environmental permits, occur. To overcome these difficulties, the company may be able to obtain more of the commodity: from its strategic stockpile (if there is sufficient there); by buying it on the spot market; or for some commodities such as gold and uranium, by leasing it. Two sources of uncertainty, the spot price of the commodity and the occurrence of serious incidents that interrupt production, are considered. For simplicity it is assumed that the commodity price follows a geometric Brownian motion, that productions incidents have a binomial distribution, that they are independent from one time period to another and that they do not affect prices. A branching tree structure is used to model the joint evolution of prices and production incidents. The aim of this research project was to evaluate the companyÆs options for fulfilling its contractual commitments. When evaluating these options, multi-stage stochastic programming with recourse was used to solve this problem because in addition to providing the dollar value of the project, it gives decision-makers the æroadmapÆ to reach the optimal value. That is, how much material should be bought/sold on the spot market, how much to add to/subtract from the stockpile, how much to lease and in the worst case what the shortfall would be, for each time period as a function of the current spot price and breakdown status. A case-study over a five-year period is used to illustrate the proposed procedure. In this study the production would be sufficient to cover the companyÆs contractual commitments unless production incidents occur. Focus is on evaluating the impact of the quantity initially in the stockpile on the value of the project when the commodity market is tight, that is, when only small quantities can be bought on the spot market or by leasing.

Only a few complex real options can be valued using closed-form equations, such as the Black and Scholes formula, because these algorithms are restrictive and prevent the construction of practical project evaluation models. Although a binomial lattice method paired with the ærisk-neutral probabilityÆ provides an easier and flexible modelling of exploration and mining projects, it has limitations when projects are complex, long-lived and influenced by the interplay of various market and private uncertainties. In order to overcome these limitations, modern decision tree software using dynamic programming capability can be used for real option valuations. This is a powerful computational tool in which the impact of various sources of uncertainties can be differentiated, so that the optimal decision path can be explicitly displayed visually. There has been significant academic controversy surrounding whether different real option (RO) valuation methods would lead to different real option values (ROV). This paper, using a realistic copper mining example, demonstrates that as long as the same degree of subjectivity and consistency are used in different real option valuation methods, they yield the same result. This conclusion is valid irrespective of whether the cash flow volatility generated by various sources of uncertainties is handled in an aggregated or in an explicit and differentiated manner. This paper compares two choices for an investor either to æbuy now and developÆ a project or to enter into a ætwo-year option to purchaseÆ after the proponents have developed it. It also shows how significantly different net after-tax operating cash flows may be generated by these different choices on the same underlying asset represented by the project. This is due to the difference in the amount and timing of the relevant capital investments affecting the depreciation and amortisation charges and as a consequence, the income tax paid. A Robbins Raise Drill Model 61R was used to provide one 7' diameter shaft 1050' deep in Clutha Development's exploratory mine at Blackwater in Central Queensland and two 7' diameter shafts 1450' deep at their South Clifton mine on the Illawarra Coast of New South Wales.

Gold mine production in South America was 247.3 tonnes in 1995 up from 156.4 tonnes ten years earlier in 1986. This represents a 58 per cent increase and amounted to 11 per cent of total world gold mine production. The major countries involved in order of production, were: Brazil (67.4 tonnes), Peru (51.5 tonnes),. Chile (48.5 tonnes), Colombia (24.1 tonnes), Venezuela (17.1 tonnes), Bolivia (16.0 tonnes), Ecuador (9.6 tonnes), Guyana (8.8 tonnes), French Guiana (3.3 tonnes) and Argentina (one tonne). The most dramatic increase was reported in Peru where production increased from 10.9 tonnes in 1986 to 51.5 tonnes in 1995, heavily influenced by the production from Minera Yanacocha which began operations in 1993 and produced 17.2 tonnes in 1995.With the reformation of the mining laws and the introduction of investment incentives in all the South American countries in recent years, dozens of major and junior mining companies began flocking into the area in the early-1990s to conduct exploration. A recent study undertaken in Brazil shows that an average of $240 million per year will be expended in this country during the period 1993 - 2010. Twenty-five per cent of this expenditure is expected to be made on gold exploration. The Bega granite at Whipstick, N.S.W., consists of a granite metasomatically altered to leucogranites and a spessartite-granite. The ore occurs in pipes controlled by jointing and shows evidence of post-depositional tectonic forces.The principal ore minerals are molybdenite and bismuthinite, with minor amounts of uraninite, pyrite, gold, bismuth, joseite A, joseite B, tetradymite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, and skutterudite. The gangue minerals are microcline, albite, quartz, muscovite, and spessartite, with fluorite, chlorite, magnetite, and biotite as accessory minerals.The intrusion of granite was followed initially by ascending metasomatic fluids which penetrated along joints to be trapped in the domed roof of the intrusion to form the leucocratic granite. Iron-manganese-rich fluids metasomatically altered the granite to a spessartitegranite which is associated with the later deposited ore.Quartz veins and dykes of varying composition post date the ore deposition.

Characterising ores in-pit and in real-time presents a significant value opportunity for the mining industry. Hyperspectral imaging systems are proposed as an enabling technology to achieve this real-time characterisation. This paper considers the application of a hyperspectral imaging spectrometer mounted on a shovel. We define the performance requirements for such a spectrometer and associated subsystems during a typical dig-load cycle. The relatively high swing rotation speed of the shovel requires approximately video-rate exposure times to achieve good spatial resolution. We analyse a selection of components against these requirements and find that suitable commercial spectrometers, detectors and optics appear fit-for-purpose. Automated, real-time spectral classification systems are also available, with only relatively modest requirements for processing power. At 11 am Monday 8 September 1997, the successful detonation of the 5/9 Mass Blast at Pasminco - Elura was signified by the subsiding of æMt KevinÆ (a 15 m high earth fill mound). The blast was in response to earlier mine subsidence, which holed through to the surface affecting future stability of underground workings. The blast was a first for Elura which fires small tonnages regularly to avoid rapid oxidation of the ore. This paper discusses the strategy and the considerable planning that went into EluraÆs first blast of this magnitude in order to succeed first time round.

All mining and quarrying operations that employ blasting to fragment and move broken ground have a price to pay for æby-productsÆ such as vibration and noise. These æby-productsÆ cannot be eliminated but they can be controlled and modern blasting techniques have improved to the point that excessive environmental restrictions can be adhered to whilst maintaining acceptable production rates and quality. Accurate measurement is the key to control, and as the environmental limits are becoming tighter, the proper way to measure vibrations from blasting operations becomes an integral part of the mining or quarrying operations. The basic vibration monitoring system consists of a primary sensor connected to a data logger and computer software for the analysis of the signal received and recorded. Currently, as with all fields of measurement, much improvement has occurred over the past decade, and electronic devices are much more accurate and reliable. Data analysis has also improved considerably with the computing power that is available to field operatives today. Mounting the primary sensor has been often overlooked in supposed æstandardsÆ with procedures such as double sided tape, resting on a flat surface provided the vibration level is less than a given amount. But if it is worth going to the expense of the monitoring equipment and manpower, surely it is worth a little extra effort to ensure the primary sensor is coupled to the ground effectively. The primary sensor must move with the ground and measure this movement; so if the primary sensor is allowed to move without respect to the ground (ie poor coupling to the ground) then a false record of the physical event will be measured. This scenario can easily be a practical reality if the primary sensor coupling method to the ground is not effective. In this study a number of mounting methods were fabricated and connected to similar data monitors and a series of ænormalÆ production blasts were used as the vibration source. These mounting devices were measured against an in-house procedure (the æstandardÆ) and the relative merits compared. A laboratory investigation was also carried out to look at the physical parameters of the æsoil and their effect on vibration attenuation of the in-house standard method.
