THE Pyrometer Committee was. formed Sept. 20, 1918, at the suggestion of Dr. H. M. Howe, Chairman of the Engineering Division of the Research Council, for the purpose of developing a pyrometric method suitable for open-hearth steel practice so that the effects of temperature in the various stages of the processes of steel making might be correlated quantitatively with the other factors influencing the production of sound .steel. As finally constituted the Committee consists of Dr. George K. Burgess, Chief Division of Metallurgy, Bureau of Standards, Chairman. Dr. Paul D. The following investigation was undertaken to develop a method for determining with reasonable accuracy the depth of overburdens of 100 ft. or less. Seismic methods seemed to offer good possibilities. The problem differed from that of the familiar salt-dome location in that the depth of overburden to be determined is much less than is encountered in oil prospecting. This means that a much shorter time interval must be measured with accuracy. Refraction methods seem at present to offer greater possibilities than reflection. The air sound persists for from 0.1 to 0.5 sec., because of echoes, and seismic reflections coming during this time are difficult to detect. A seismometer sensitive to vertical vibrations only offers possibilities and has been used here with some success. It is hoped that the application of this type of seismometer to reflection shooting in this region may be investigated still further. The apparatus used consisted of a carbon-button seismometer followed by a three-stage, transformer-coupled, vacuum-tube amplifier and a General Radio string oscillograph. Time marks are provided by a 1000-cycle, 600-r.p.m., synchronous motor provided with five spokes which intercept the light to the camera at 1/50 sec. intervals. This motor is driven by a two-stage vacuum-tube amplifier of 3 watt output, actuated by a tuning fork. The power supply for the seismometer amplifier is one 2-volt storage and one 45-volt B battery. The motor amplifier is powered by a 6-volt storage battery and 6 to 225-volt, 15-watt motor generator. The temperature-frequency characteristics of the tuning fork have been determined and for ordinary working temperatures the error in time that would be introduced is less than M millisecond for time intervals up to 100 milliseconds. The impact is produced by a sledge blow for surface distances less than 100 ft. and dynamite for greater distances. Two steel balls with wires attached form an electric circuit through a 1-ft. piece of railroad rail upon which they rest. A few years ago, the writer encountered a problem that, at first, seemed to be due to peculiar conditions affecting grain growth. Large cups made from heavy metal failed in the first drawing operation in the process of making seamless tubes. The metal, as cast, appeared to be sound and strong; it rolled successfully and withstood the first cupping operation, but on the first draw it failed, with a crystalline fracture. The failure appeared in the slightly worked part of the bottom of the cup, and microscopic examination revealed exceptionally large grains. Knowing the general conditions governing recrystallization of brass, which were later published by Mathewson and Phillipsll an investigation was outlined with the idea of including various conditions under which new grains might form, and which would include the effect that a previous anneal might have upon the anneal following. These conditions were produced by annealing specimens of brass at five different temperatures, indenting them with a 10-mm. ball under four different pressures, and then reannealing at each of the five temperatures five specimens each of which had been annealed at one of the five temperatures. Preparation of Specimens The material used was cartridge brass 0.400 in. thick, having the following composition: Copper 66.60 per. cent., zinc 33.35 per cent., lead 0.02 per cent., iron 0.03 per cent. This was rolled with 35 per cent. reduction after a 700" C. anneal. Fig. 1 shows the structure of this original bar on which all subsequent anneals were made. Pieces 1 in. (2.5 cm.) wide and 3 in. long were prepared and annealed for 1/2 hr. at 450°, 550°, 650°, '750°, and 850" C. Each of these pieces are indented under the Brinell test with a 10-mm. ball at 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 kg. pressure. Then, sets of five pieces from each of the original anneals were reannealed at 450°, 550°, 650°, 750°, and 850" C.

The Nb-Co system was nuestigated in the range 10 to SO at. pct Co with X-rays. A pt phase with the W6Fe.r-type structure occurs in the system between 46 and 52 at, pct Co. Its unit-cell dimensions are nearly identical to those of the p Phases found in the Nb-Fe and Nb-Ni systems. Two Laves phases, one having the MgZnz-type structure and the other the MgCuz-type structure, already t-eported in the literature, are found to exist in the system. The ,l.IgZnz-type phase occurs between 62 and 64 at. pct Co. A MgNi2-type Laves phase, reported in the literature, is no! obtained. A binalry phase is found to exist belozv I000C around 82 at. pct Co. THE cobalt-rich side of the system Nb-Co has been repeatedly investigated by previous inestiators" and the following intermediate phases are known to occur: NbCo, which crystallizes in the MgCu2-type structure and Nbc03,' reported originally by Wall-bam, which has the MgNiz-type structre. Jordan and uwez' as well as lliott' were unable to find the MgNiz-type phase. Two phases, designated as x and y, were reported by Saito and eck.' The phase x was inferred to have a narrow composition range near 77 at. pct Co. No published work is known to the author which reports the investigations in the niobium-rich portions of the system. This paper presents the results of an investigation in the Nb-Co system between 10 and 80 at. pct Co. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two or three grams of the alloys under investigation were prepared using niobium (99.9 pct +) and cobalt (98.8 pct + with 0.14 pct Fe and and 0.03 pct C) in a tungsten-electrode arc furnace under commercial argon atmosphere. They were then wrapped in molybdenum sheets and annealed for a period between 5 days and 1 week at 1300°C in high vacuum (10-" orr) or in evacuated quartz amules for 2 weeks at 1000°C. Powders of -325 mesh size were prepared for X-ray work by crushing and grinding the specimens. Subsequent reannealing of the powders was not undertaken since most of the alloys were brittle and broke easily. X-ray powder patterns of the as-cast and annealed samples were prepared in a Siemens cylindrical camera (57.3 mm radius) with Cr-K, radiation. A Siemens diffrac to meter was used to get the X-ray patterns of some new phases. Metal log raphic examination of the alloys supplemented the X-ray findings. RESULTS The results of the X-ray and microstructural analysis Of the alloys are in in Table I. The lattice parameters of the phases are listed in Table 11 for quick reference. A set of micro photographs in Fig. l(n) to (j) show the microstructures of some alloys. A probable equilibrium diagram is drawn in Fig. 2

CRITICAL analyses of the work expended in producing oil by the utilization of gas energy have appeared in the publications of Shaw,1 Pierce and Lewis,2 and Herold,3 authors who have ably discussed the factors which must be taken into consideration in comparing energy consumed per barrel in various wells which are flowed by means of gas-lift. However, two distinct phases of oil production are concerned with the ratio of gas energy consumed to oil produced. One of these phases is the gas-lift, which utilizes the differential gas pressures for the purpose of flowing oil, whether these pressures be natural reservoir pressures or be induced by artificial compression of gas or air. The other phase has to do with prorating oil production in pools which are operated either as units, or are subject to such restrictions as those imposed at Oklahoma City by the Corporation Commission, or, by similar controlling groups in other fields. An abundance of literature is available relative to the problems of flowing wells by gas-lift, but the first suggestion that the energy of the gas within the oil and gas pool might serve as a basis for proration, appeared in the timely article by McWilliams.4 Much of the. dissatisfaction with proration in certain fields is because some operators feel that besides the hazard to the wells which accompanies the test, the method of allocating production on the basis of the "potential" gage is inequitable and gives some operators a distinct advantage over others.5 The most severe penalty may be exacted from the most progressive operators or those who attempt to produce their oil with a minimum quantity of reservoir gas. For the first time in the history of the Venezuelan petroleum industry production exceeded 200 million barrels. The total production for all fields amounted to 205,430,869 bbl., which is more than 9 per cent of the world's 1939 total. This is an increase of over 15 million barrels or 8.0 per cent above the 1938 figure, which, compared with the slightly less than 2 per cent increase of the 1938 figure over 1937, shows the marked activity in Venezuela during the past year. The Maracaibo Lake fields are still the predominating factor in Venezuelan production, showing an increase of approximately 9½ million barrels over last year's figure and accounting for 71.8 per cent of Venezuela's total. Lagunillas continues to hold precedence as a single field, having yielded 47.1 per cent of the accumulative total and 39.4 per cent of 1939's total. This field showed an increase of slightly more than 3½ million barrels over 1938. Tia Juana, the second largest field, attained a record production, increasing its percentage of the Venezuelan total from 23.4 in 1938 to 23.7 in 1939. The La Rosa field, which includes Punta Benitez and Ambrosio, declined from 13.7 to 12.0 per cent; Bachaquero, the southernmost Lake field, which came into regular production at the end of 1938, contributed over 31/3 million barrels. Quiriquire, in eastern Venezuela, ousted La Rosa as the third largest producing field, and, although production increased by 11/3 milliorl barrels, percentage of the total declined from 13.2 to 12.9. Mene Grande, the oldest field, declined from 6.6 per cent in 1938 to 5.9 in 1939. Tem-blador produced for a whole year for the first time and yielded 3,647,867 bbl. The Colon district, in the Maracaibo Lake area, comprising the Tarra-Los Manueles fields, showed slight increases, as also did Cumarebo and Pedernales. Construction of the 16-in. pipe line from Oficina to Puerto La Cruz (Guanta), the longest line of this size in the world, was completed toward the end of the year and this new field in eastern Venezuela started shipping oil in December. This field is operated by the Mene Grande Oil Co. and was credited with a production of 2,347,625 bbl. in 1939. Jusepin field, some 25 miles southwest of Quiriquire in eastern Venezuela,

Like some other Pt-group metals palladium shows a low but considerable solid solubility of oxygen, which was found already from oxidation studies. The oxygen solid solubility of palladium in equilibrium with gaseous oxygen has been investigated at 900 - 1300 °C in oxygen (665 mbar) and air by gassing and analyzing polycrystalline samples. The 0-concentrations range from 40 to 90 ppm and decrease with rising temperature. The isobaric solubility can be represented by the least-squares fit log c0 = 0.5 log p02- 0.32 + 920/T (c0 in wt. ppm, p02 in mbar, T in K). The thermodynamic data of the exothermic solution reaction are calculated to ?H°= -17.6 kJ?mol-1 and ?S° -76.5 J?mol ? K-1. The behaviour of palladium in an oxygen atmosphere is characterized by the simultaneous reactions of the solution of oxygen in the metal and the formation and evaporation of volatile oxides besides the pure metal evaporation.

Hydrogen diffusion in hcp and bcc titanium in the temperature range 610° to 900°C was measured by reacting cylindrical specimens of high-purity titanium at constant temperature with small constant pressures of hydrogen of the order of a few Torr. In the range 0 to 6.7 at. pct H in hcp titanium, the diffusion coefficient D in sq cm per sec is given by: where T is in °K and R in cal per g-atom OK. Only three measurements of diffusivity in bcc titanium were made: at 900' : the diffusivity in ß titanium was found to be 1.8 x 10-4 sq crn per sec. McQUILLAN1 has studied the constitution of the Ti-H system and reported the concentration of hydrogen as a function of pressure of hydrogen and temperature. He found hydrogen absorption was reversible and rapid at temperatures above 500°C in both crystallographic modifications, the a (hcp) phase and the ß (bcc) phase, with the latter phase stabilized by hydrogen additions. Wasilewski and Kehl 2 measured the diffusivity of hydrogen in hcp and bcc Ti-H alloys. For bcc alloys, they reacted cylindrical specimens of titanium with hydrogen gas at 1 atm pressure. They measured the rate of absorption of hydrogen isothermally on specimens ranging from zero hydrogen content when above the transformation temperature to hydrogen contents sufficient to stabilize the bcc phase when below the transformation temperature. By integrating Fick's second law for a cylindrical geometry, assuming a diffusion coefficient independent of composition, they calculated diffusivities as a function of temperature. In the range 650" to 1000°C their results in bcc titanium yielded the expression: where D is in sq cm per sec, T in OK, and R the gas constant in cal per g-atom-OK. Their studies on the hcp a phase were conducted by exposing long cylindrical titanium specimens to hydrogen at a sufficiently high pressure to establish a surface layer of fl phase 80 to 120 u thick for the duration of an isothermal experiment. Concentration profiles were then determined by hydrogen analysis from chips obtained upon machining quenched specimens. The diffusivity of hydrogen was then calculated yielding the expression: The present investigation was undertaken principally to redetermine the diffusivity data on a titanium by a direct absorption from the gas phase at sufficiently low hydrogen pressures to avoid the presence of a surface bcc phase and also to check the diffusivity data at low hydrogen concentrations in the bcc stmcture. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE High-purity electrolytic sponge titanium (99.9 pct) of BHN 91 was arc-melted, forged, rolled, and machined into cylinders of final hardness, upon annealing, of BHN 92. Cylindrical specimens of two sets of dimensions were used: 1.524 by 2.931 cm and 1.905 by 3.663 cm diam and length, respectively. The experimental apparatus used for annealing specimens and for admitting known amounts of hydrogen at constant pressure is shown in Fig. 1. In a typical experiment, a specimen was lightly abraded with fine-grain silicon carbide, washed with water and detergent, and then thoroughly degreased with reagent-grade tri-chlorethylene and acetone. The specimen was suspended by a Chrome1 wire in the center of a quartz furnace tube, without contact with the tube, and heated to 925°C (as measured by a thermocouple adjacent to the specimen, outside the tube) for a period of at least 4 hr under a vacuum of from 10-6 to -7 Torr as measured by an ionization gage. THE technique developed by Duwez, Willens and Kle-ment' for rapid solidification of molten alloys in small quantities by ejecting them on to a highly conducting substrate with the aid of a shock wave has come to be known as "liquid quenching" or "splat cooling" in literature and has already been applied to alloys of many binary systems.' The very high cooling rates of the order of l060 to 1080 per sec obtained in this technique and the consequent drastic undercooling of the melt have led to such striking results as formation of new amorphous and crystalline metastable phases and extension of solid-solubility limits in many alloy systems. The cooling rates in these experiments can, however, be neither accurately measured nor effectively controlled and hence the occurrence of either more than one metastable phase or appreciable differences in constitution in splat-cooled alloys of the same composition cannot be ruled out.3 In fact, workers in two laboratories have reported formation of two different cubic metastable phases in liquid-quenched Au-Si alloys containing 17 to 20 at. pct si.4,5 The present note deals with some new and interesting results obtained in a Ag-21 at. pct Ge alloy and a Au-27 at. pct Ge alloy subjected to the liquid-quenching treatment at different cooling rates. Two alloys of nearly the same composition had earlier been rapidly solidified by the standard "gun technique" in the same laboratory and shown to solidify in nonequilibrium structures, viz., an hcp phase (a = 2.987Å;c =4.718Å) in the Ag-Ge system6,7 and both hcp (a = 2.885Å; c = 4.754Å) and tetragonal (a = 11.627A; c = 22.491Å) phases in the Au-Ge system.3 Apart from different substrates (copper and stainless steel), different melt temperatures (50º to 500°C above the liquidus), and different capillary sizes (0.4 to 1.5 mm diam) in the "gun technique", slower cooling rates of the order of l050C per sec were also obtained in the present work by replacing the substrate by water at room temperature in a modification of the technique due to Olsen and Hultgren.8 No attempt was made to measure the cooling rate in any experiment. The products varied from fine powder (>40 pct by wt—200 mesh) obtained by quenching in water to thin flakes and foils (11.0 sq mm to 4.0 sq cm) produced by splat cooling. They were subjected to the Debye-Scherrer method of X-ray examination in each case. In case of the Ag-Ge alloy, in addition to the expected metastable hcp phase,6 a coexistent tetragonal phase (a = 5.093,Å; c = 7.009Å) was detected in some experiments. Eight weak X-ray reflections from this phase could be identified, two of them being the same as reported earlier.7 With increase in the cooling rate, the dominant hcp phase seems to be first accompanied by traces of silver or germanium and then either homogeneous or mixed with traces of this new tetragonal phase. The splat-cooled Au-Ge alloy showed generally the expected hcp and tetragonal phases,3 but sometimes traces of germanium were also present. The internal friction of nonferrous metals vibrating at low stress amplitudes has so far always been successfully interpreted in terms of inhomogeneities of one sort or another. Examples are the fluctuation of stress across a specimen vibrating transversely,1,2,3 the stress inhomogeneities due to the elastic anisotropy and partial random orientation of the individual crystallites, localized weak regions introduced by cold-working,6'7 grain boundaries and possibly twinning planes.8'9 Perfect single crystals are, by definition, homogeneous. Actual single crystals usually, perhaps always, contains some imperfections. The present investigation was undertaken to determine whether the internal friction of single crystals may likewise be attributed to inhomogeneities. This study was made possible through the gift of a large single crystal of 70-30 alpha brass by H. L. Burghoff, of the Chase Brass and Copper Co. The specimen, 3.i in. in diameter and 10 in. long, was similar to samples previously described by Mr. Burghoff. Experimental Method The experimental method used has previously been described in institute papers.5'6'9 The measure of internal friction adopted here, I/Q, is X the logarithmic decre- ment, a measure used by some writers, and is also X the specific damping capacity, a measure used by other writers. In all measurements the stress level was kept so low that the measurements were independent of stress level. In all measurements in which the temperature was varied, observations were made as the specimen slowly cooled from its highest temperature. The specimen was vibrated transversely. Observations were made at the fundamental frequency and at the first overtone, of about 620 and 1710 cycles per second, respectively. No attempt was made to avoid acoustical losses. Experimental Results The specimen was annealed for several hours at 450°C. The temperature dependence of the internal friction was then determined from room temperature to 400°C. As shown in Fig. I, the internal friction increased by only a factor of 2 from room temperature to 300°C., then by a factor of 100 during the next Ioo° interval. These measurements are consistent with the view that the observed internal friction is the superposition of two distinct parts. One, dominant at room temperature, is nearly independent of temperature. This part may be accounted for by acoustical losses and by transverse thermal currents. It was not further investigated. The second part, when plotted in the manner of Fig. I, lies upon a straight line. Therefore it has a heat of activation H; i.e., it varies with temperature as Internal friction e-H/RT [I]

A unique method of measuring weight loss as a function 3 of time, with a sensitivity of 10-5 grams, while leaching copper minerals with a flowing acid leach solution has been developed. Kinetic results obtained coupled with visual and microprobe analyses show topochemical reaction for the leaching of chrysocolla with sulfuric acid. The kinetics follow a shrinking core model and show ion diffusion through a product layer, chemical reaction at the unreacted core interface and mass transfer through the boundary layer as being important.

Transmission electron microscopy techniques hare been used to study the spontaneous marfensite phase that forms during the thinning of Ti-Cr alloys. The structure of this phase has been found to differ. from the hcp martensite and has been identified as a clisforted fcc lattice. The spordaneous marlensile in this system is interpreted as a metastable isomorph of the equilibriunz TiCr, phase. WHEN thin-foil specimens for transmission electron microscopy were prepared from metastable alloys of the Ti-Cr system, a spontaneous transformation occurred' when the foils contained the untrans-formed 0 phase or two-phase mixtures of the 0 and w phases. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship that exists between the crystal structure of the spontaneous product and that of the matrix. The differences between the martensite transformation that occurs in the bulk material and the spontaneous reaction that occurs during the preparation of thin foils are compared with the observations that have been reported for similar phenomena in a commercial titanium alloy.' A spontaneous reaction that exhibits characteristics similar to a martensite transformation has been reported to occur in thin foils prepared from the retained metastable structures of several alloy systems.1'3"7 ~ull~ observed such a spontaneous reaction in 0 brass and attributed the apparent increase in the martensite transformation temperature to a decrease in the non-chemical free energy associated with bulk strain energy. He also showed that the spontaneous product did not have a specific habit plane, but that its orientation relationships to the parent matrix were dependen on the thickness of the transforming region. It has also been pointed out by Breedis6 that in thin films the absence of the constraints imposed by a bulk matrix can cause different requirements for the martensite plate interface and lattice distortion which is reflected bv a dependence of the transformation mechanism on the specimen geometry. In the case of the spontaneous reaction reported for Au-Zn alloys7 a definite habit plane was determined and shown to correspond with the habit plane calculated on the basis of the Bowles and Mackenzie crystallographic theory of the martensite transformation.'- lo EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A series of titanium alloys containing 5.5, 5.9, 6.4: 7.6, 8.0, 11.3, and 18.7 at. pct Cr were prepared from high-purity (iochrome) chromium and iodide-grade titanium by levitation melting. The experimental procedure used for sectioning the alloys and for thin-foil preparation has been reported in an earlier paper.' X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained using a 114-mm Debye-Scherrer camera and Cu-Ka radiation. In order to minimize fluorescent radiation from the specimen, a strip of aluminum foil 0.002 in. thick was placed in contact with the X-ray film. After a specimen was removed from the camera: an additional X-ray experiment was performed, to insure that no spurious lines were obtained due to the presence of the aluminum foil. The interstitial impurity analysis for the alloys used in this study was as follows: oxygen, 100 ppm: hydrogen, 30 ppm: nitrogen, 28 ppm.
