In his excellent book on the Principles of Flotation, Warkl makes the following significant statement concerning the theory of flotation: Two questions of first-rate importance must be considered . . . First, it must be decided whether the sulfide minerals require a collector in order that they may float, or whether as has been claimed, they possess an inherent float-ability and need no collector. Second, it must be decided whether the xanthate type of collector can react with or be adsorbed by the unchanged sulfide minerals themselves, or whether, as many claim, reaction with the collector is dependent upon initial oxidation of the mineral surface. In the theory of flotation there are no two questions of greater importance than these. Ravitz and Porter2 presented evidence that galena can be floated without a collector, and even without any reagent, provided oxidation products are thoroughly removed from its surface. They found also that thoroughly cleaned galena floated faster when xanthate was used than when a frother alone or no reagent was used, and that, without a collector, the recovery decreased gradually upon exposure of the mineral to air. Their work, however, has met with considerable criticism.l(127).3-6 This paper is presented to answer the objections that have been raised, and to present additional data that confirin their results. The apparatus used to provide oxygen-free conditions for flotation has been described in detail by Ravitz and Porter. An atmosphere of purified nitrogen was maintained within the apparatus; all water and solutions used were freed of dissolved air, and could be transferred where desired by the use of nitrogen Pressure; nitrogen was used as the gaseous medium for flotation. The flotation cell was essentially a glass cylinder 15 cm. long and 4.6 cm. in diameter. Near the bottom was sealed a fritted glass filter, which broke up the gas into small bubbles, and 6 cm. above this filter was a side arm through which the froth overflowed. The pulp was agitated by a glass impeller, which entered the cell through a mercury seal. For each test 17 grams of galena and 75 ml. of water were placed in the cell, after which the speed of the impeller and the rate of gas flow were adjusted. Water was added gradually during the test to keep the froth level at the proper height. The mineral was prepared and cleaned in the following manner. Exceptionally Pure galena was crushed by hand on a clean bucking board, screened to —I50+ 200 mesh, and deslimed on a 200-mesh sieve with a fine spray of water. It was then boiled on a hot plate for a number of hours with several changes of the desired cleaning solution, after which both the solution and the mineral were placed in the "mineral flask" of the apparatus. The cleaning solution was drained off, and the mineral was boiled with oxygen-free water

It seems to the writer that no very important improvements require to be made in order at least to keep up the present production for many years to come. This report is a continuation of an earlier one with a similar titlell to which the reader is referred for such details of procedure as do not appear here. A brief summary will be given of the objects and methods of the research at this time. It was pointed out in the previous paper that properties of magnesium alloys, as reported by different workers, often differ. This was thought to be due to differences in the preparation of the specimens tested. The ideal way to compare alloys would be to prepare each of them in so many ways that reasonable assurance would exist that the best properties of each alloy had been developed. The alloys would then be compared on the basis of these properties. The treatment actually given the alloys of these studies is necessarily a compromise with completeness. Nevertheless, enough treatments have been given so that a considerable degree of assurance exists that the properties obtained are representative of the alloy as such, and not merely of the manner in which it was worked and heat-treated. Procedure The alloys were cast in the form of cylindrical ingots, which were extruded into bar before being rolled. Some of the ingots were made in 2-in. diameter molds whereas all of the alloys of the previous paper were cast in 4.in. molds. For the larger ingots, the extruded bar was 2 by 0.140 in.; lor the 2-in. ingots, it was I by 0.100 in. Preliminary work indicated that strip rolled from both sizes of the bars would have substantially the same properties. The bar was rolled at some temperature in the range 400' to 800°F., for a total reduction of 50 per cent. The temperature and reduction per pass were so selected that no cold cracking occurred, but were such as to leave the metal in a semihard condition. The hot-rolled metal was annealed at several temperatures in the range 400' to 800°F.; it was also cold-rolled, and given solution and aging treatments. Two standard test bars corresponding to each treatment were pulled in tension, and the average was obtained. Twelve treatments, in all, were given each alloy. The properties of the annealed specimen having the highest percentage of elongation were selected to represent the alloy in the annealed condition. The properties of the cold-rolled specimen having the highest yield strength were selected to represent the alloy in the cold-rolled condition. These properties were then plotted against percentage composition by analysis. Smooth curves were drawn among the points, thus graphically averaging the results over the entire range studied. The percentage of elongation in the cold-rolled state was not plotted, since it was always low, and varied in an irregular manner with composition. The mechanical properties of unidirectionally solidified A1(rich)-Mg and A1(rich)-Cu castings containing up to 15 wt pct solute have been determined with re -spect to the volume fraction of interdendritic eutectic. Pioperties were determined in the directions pumllel and Perpendicular to that of solidification; the volume fraction of eutectic was varied between the "as-cast" and equilibrizcm amounts by approperiate heat treatment following solidification. The principles of fiber strengthened composites and dispersion strengthened materials are adapted to explain the mechanical properties of these castings. It is generally accepted that castings often have inferior mechanical properties when con~pared to wrought products. However, there is little quantitative data available concerning the factors which make apparently sound castings weak and/or brittle. The relative ease and inexpensiveness of the casting process have always been attractive and, therefore, an understanding of the factors which contribute to the mechanical properties of castings would seem desirable. Such an understanding may lead to an improvement in the mechanical properties to an extent where castings would become competitive in applications where presently only wrought products are considered to have the requisite properties. Such an understanding could also improve the reliability of present cast products. Much of the recent research on castings has centered about determining the extent of segregation in cast alloys. Macrosegregation, particularly inverse segregation, has been studied in some detail 1-8 and a considerable understanding of microsegregation has been obtained.9'10 The effect of solidification rate on dendrite spacing and on the amount of interdendritic eutectic in binary alloys has been established, particularly for Al(rich)-Cu alloys.""0 However, the extension of these ideas to relate the amount of interdendritic eutectic, concentration gradients, micro-segregation, dendrite spacings, and so forth, to the rnechanical properties has been limited. Dean and spear" have related the mechanical properties of an Al-Si-Mg alloy, A356-T62, to the dendrite spacing and have shown that the mechanical properties improve with decreasing dendrite spacing. Passmore et al.12 have shown that annealing at high temperature improves the mechanical properties of Al(rich)-Cu al- loys and Archer and Kempf 13 have shown that an Al-1 pct Mg-1.75 pct Si alloy behaves in a similar manner. Ahearn and Quigley 14 have shown that high temperature homogenization also enhances the mechanical properties of an SAE 4330 steel. However, in the above investigations, no underlying reasons were suggested for the improvement in mechanical properties. The purpose of the present investigation is to relate the mechanical properties of castings to some of the solichfication variables and to derive some equations by which calculations of the mechanical properties may be attempted. In particular, the effect of the amount of interdendritic eutectic and the effect of stress direction with respect to that of solidification on the mechanical properties will be considered. The Al(rich)-Mg and Al(rich)-Cu binary alloy systems were chosen for study. The A1-Mg system was chosen because its constitutional relationships are such that large volunles of eutectic (up to 24 vol pct) may be obtained in the as-cast condition and then be completely dissolved by subsequent heat treatment at about 440°C. This allows a comprehensive study relating the mechanical properties of castings to the amount of interdendritic eutectic. Also the Al(rich)-Mg eutectic is almost a single phase 15 which should make the experimental results more amenable to theoretical interpretation and calculation. The A1-Cu system was chosen for study because of the large amount of related information available concerning segregation, dendrite spacing, and so forth. Unidirectionally solidified castings were used throughout the investigation so that the effect of solidification direction with respect to the direction of applied stress could be determined. THEORETICAL It is well known that upon solidification of binary alloy castings, the nonequilibrium amount of eutectic which forms is given by 10 where fe o is the weight fraction of eutectic, Cs is the solid solubility of solute at the eutectic temperature, k is the equilibrium partition coefficient, and C, is the average composition of the alloy. In the development of Eq. [I], it is assumed that the effects of inverse segregation and diffusion in the solid are negligible, and that no porosity is present. If the casting is homogenized at a high temperature for a long period of time, some (or all) of the eutectic is dissolved and the amount of eutectic for this "equilibrium" condition may be calculated directly from the constitutional diagram. THE HIGH-TEMPERATURE SCALE IN OPTICAL PYROMETRY AT the basis of optical pyrometry lie the theoretical and experimental data of the so-called blackbody. The black body is essentially a theoretical conception, with certain simple properties attributed to it -fundamentally, the property that its radiation at any temperature is a unique function of the temperature and does not involve any other variables. As a theoretical conception, an equation has been developed by Boltzmann connecting the total radiant power with the temperature, and another equation by Planck connecting the distribution of radiant power throughout the spectrum with the temperature. The integral of the latter with respect to wave-length conduces to the former and permits the evaluation of the constant c1 of the Planck equation, ass given in the form. J-= cl?-5 c2 (1) e ? T ? 1 assuming that the constant Q of the Stefan-Boltzmann law E=a(T4-T40) is known. The other constant c2 is arrived at by other methods, which will be discussed later. This equation for the black body lies at the foundation of optical pyrometry. To make the discussion complete, it should be stated that the theoretical black body is quite closely realized by a hollow enclosure with walls at a uniform temperature and radiating through a small orifice. The electrically heated black body, first introduced by Lummer and Kurlbaum, is an essential part of the equipment of a pyrometric research or testing laboratory. Numerous investigations have shown that its radiation conforms to that of the theoretical black body within experimental errors. Hence by operating the electrically heated black body at the melting point of some pure metal for which the temperature of melting has been determined on the vas scale. a standard is obtained for comparison with

Batch grinding tests at short times were made in a laboratory rod mill with 10 x 14 mesh quartzite in corn syrup-water mixtures of varying viscosity. The weight fraction broken and size modulus were found to be independent of viscosity up to 20 cp, but at higher viscosities breakage of the feed decreased while the size modulus increased. The mechanisms of the effect of viscosity are discussed on the basis of particle dynamics. The effect of viscosity of the suspending medium on grinding has not been accorded much attention, although both wet and dry grinding are used in bene-ficiation processes and the viscosities of water and air differ greatly. schweyerl investigated the rates of grinding of quartzite in a pebble mill with air, water and glycerol as the suspending media and found the rate in terms of new surface developed per thousand revolutions of the mill to be constant and dependent on viscosity up to 20,000 rev, but to decrease and become independent of viscosity for longer grinding times. Based on considerations of the drag forces exerted on suspended particles and on the grinding media under turbulent and laminar flow conditions, viscosity can be expected to inhibit the rate of grinding in a given system as it changes the flow conditions from turbulent to laminar. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of viscosity of the suspending fluid in the batch grinding of a homogeneous feed of uniform size for short residence times, a region of more practical interest than the long times investigated by Schweyer. In actual grinding operations, the viscosity of the fluid does not change, but the consistency (apparent viscosity) of the pulp increases with additions of fines. In this study the consistency of the pulp was not measured because it was thought that the grinding times were too short to alter the apparent viscosity appreciably.* *Minus 200 mesh quartz at 65% solids has an apparent viscosity of about 25 cp as measured by a simple consistometer. For the purposes of this study, the effect of viscosity on grinding can be shown sufficiently well on the basis of the cumulative weight fraction finer than the feed size at any time, and the size modulus, ku, of the finer than feed sizes. The parameter, ku, is obtained from a form of the Gaudin-Schuhmann equation. METHOD AND MATERIAL The grinding tests were accomplished in a laboratory rod mill 10-1/2 in. long and 8 in. bore with a 20-lb rod charge consisting of two 1-in., eight 3/4-in., eight 1/2-in., and eight 1/4-in. diam rods. The mill speed was 43.2 rpm. Charges of 400 g 10 x 14 mesh Wisconsin quartzite** were ground for times of 60, **Courtesy of Minnesota Mining and Mfg. Co. 120, 180 and 240 sec in 500 cc of fluid made up of corn syrup and water in measured proportions. The temperature of the pulp was measured immediately upon completion of grinding, and the size distribution of the quartzite was determined by a wash-wet-dry screening technique. Corn syrup was chosen because of its high viscosity and ideal viscous behavior, and also because its density is not greatly different from that of water. The viscosity of each fluid mixture was measured with an Ostwald viscometer at 25 C. and a correction was made for the temperature of the pulp according to tabulated values for sucrose solutions. The density differences were so small that they probably did not significantly affect breakage. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The conditions of the grinding tests, computed viscosities, weight fractions finer than the feed size and values of a and ku are listed in Table I. The values of a and ku were taken from the linear portions of the log-log plots of cumulative weight fraction finer vs size for the various grinding times. The plots for tests in fluids of average viscosity 8.6 cp are shown in Fig. 1. In general all of the sets of curves were linear throughout most of the size

POSSIBLY in no other of the non-ferrous mining districts of this country has the use and develop-ment of mechanical loaders been carried to such an extent as in the "lead belt" of Southeast Missouri. It has become apparent to the four mining companies in the district that it is imperative to apply satisfactory mechanical methods to the chief remaining stage of the entire operations-mining, milling, smelting and refining-in which manual labor is still largely used to handle material in process. With increasing wages and with the reduction of the metal divisor by the extension of mining into lower-grade orebodies, the shoveling cost per ton of lead produced has become relatively so large that in an effort to reduce it there is ample justification for considerable capital expenditure. Hand shovelers load about 18 tons of ore per shift and the average grade is less than five per cent. lead. Further, the ore is relatively heavy, about 21 cu. ft. to the ton when broken, and is often so coarse and so closely compacted after shooting that it requires much more block-holing, sledging, and muscular effort to shovel than, for example, does the cherty and more granular ore of the Joplin district or the finer ore in the headings of a drift mine. No mining company desires to pay for mere back muscles if it be economically feasible to avoid it, and labor saving machinery should be susceptible of operation by older employees, who are no longer capable of the more strenuous manual occupations.

Constant-load creep-rupture tests at 1100°, 1300° and 1500°F were made on a Type-316, 18 Cr-8 Ni-ZMo, austenitic stainless steel to determine the relationship between ruptzire life and other aspects of creep behavior, The test program was designed on a statistical basis to check the variability of various creep properties and to determine emprically the dependence of minimutn creep rate and ruptzire life on initial stress, The dependence of the rupture life, tn, on the initial stress, a,, is found to be related to the stress dependence of the wrinimum creep rate, i,, and secondary creep strain, The instabilities or breaks found in the conventionual log - logt, plots can be traced to either a change in the linear dependence of log i, on log a, or to a change in secondary creep strain. In the alloy tested, rupture is found to be predowmanantly of the inter crystalline type, For this material, the secondary creep strain is -found to depend on the nature of the grain boundary precipitate, which affects grain boundary migration. It has been shown for a variety of metals and al tested at elevated temperatures under creep conditions that the empirical relationship exists between rupture life, tr, and minimum creep rate, i,. This relationship, in which C and a are in some cases independent of stress or temperature, shows in a general way that creep rupture depends on creep behavior prior to tertiary creep stage. To determine more fully the factors which control creep rupture requires, therefore, more knowledge of the relationship between rupture and creep behavior. To obtain such information, constant-load creep-rupture tests have been made on a Type-316, 18 Cr-8 Ni-2 Mo, austenitic stainless steel at 11000, 1300°, and 1500°F. These tests were designed on a statistical basis to determine the variability of the various creep properties measured and to determine empirically the stress dependence of minimum creep rate and rupture life. As a result of this work, various empirical relations have been established defining more closely the factor, C, in the relation between rupture life and minimum creep rate. This factor is found to be proportional to the amount of strain during secondary creep. The variation of secondary creep strain with rupture life and temperature is determined and its effect on rupture behavior discussed. The variability in minimum creep rate and rupture life is also dis- cussed and the dependence of these quantities on initial stress is interpreted. TEST MATERIAL AND TEST PROCEDURES The material tested is an austenitic stainless steel, AISI Type 316, of the following composition: C, 0.07 pct; Mn, 1.94 pct; P, 0.01 pct; S, 0.021 pct; Si, 0.38 pct; Cr, 18 pct; Ni, 11.4 pct; Mo, 2.15 pct; All 0.003 pct and N, 0.043 pct. The material was received as a hot-rolled 0.5-in. diam bar which was sectioned into 3.25 in. long blanks. Each blank was heat treated by holding 1/2 hr at 2000° F followed by water quenching. A 3/8-in. coupon was removed from each heat-treated blank and the microstructure was examined, the grain size determined, and the hardness measured. The microstructure was found to be uniform from blank to blank and the grain size was found to range from 4 to 6 ASTM numbers. Hardness, measured using a 20-kg load, varied between 127 and 148 Vpn. Tensile creep-rupture specimens having a 0.25 in. diam within a 1.5-in. reduced section were machined from the heat-treated blanks. Constant-load tests were made on these specimens at 1100°, 1300°, and 1500 F. Six specimens were tested at each stress level. Three creep-rupture machines were employed for tests at each temperature, two specimens being tested in each machine for each stress level. To minimize any effect due to local inhomogeneities along the length of the as-received bar the specimens were randomized before test. While much geological work and drilling have been done in Venezuela, the incompleteness of geological evidence obtainable and the restricted areas in which drilling has been done make any estimates of oil resources extremely speculative. Nevertheless, it is felt that the data given are justified, in the belief that the ideas of a geologist familiar with the region are better than those of a promoter. The oldest beds of interest to oil men are those of the Cretaceous, which are well developed in eastern Venezuela and about parts of Lake Mara-caibo. In both cases, a hard massive limestone is overlain by a great thickness, most of which is shale. In the west, in places this shale is more than 2000 ft. (610 m.) thick, while in the east it-mag attain 3500 ft. (1067 m.). The limestone and parts of the shale are oil producing. In the east, the Tertiary where present is almost entirely covered by the Quarternary, but in the west it is well developed. In probable unconformity over the Cretaceous shales is found a series of sandstones and shales, which may be called the lower coal series. It is well developed southwest of the lake, where it is the oil container, and is probably the lowest series exposed east of the lake. Above this is the Pauji shale, which is probably the point of origin of all the oil east of Lake Maracaibo and in the State of Falcon. It has a thickness of about 3000 ft. (914 m.) in the Mene Grande region. The upper coal series is developed as a great thickness of sands, shales, and clays, with some partly consolidated limestone. Its thickness may be as great as 10,000 ft. It is the oil container of the Falcon-El Mene region and a probable location for oil in some of the area about the lake. It may or may not include the so-called Maracaibo series in which the oil is found at Mene Grande. Over much of Venezuela, the Quarternary is present in unknown thickness, which probably is not great. It obscures oil structure in all cases and presents the greatest hazard of oil exploration for the fields which probably exist below.

A permanent exhibition of mining machinery has just been opened in the Grand Central Palace, New York City. The exhibits include: Aerial tramways, amalgamation, assaying and laboratory appliances and supplies, blast furnaces, coal, coal-breaker plant, coal excavation, coal products, compressed-air plant, concentrating, crushing, cyanidation, distillation, drainage and pumping, drilling, earth excavation, electrical supplies, explosives, fire prevention, flotation, general supplies, hoisting, hygiene, welfare, iron products, leaching, mechanical conveyors, metal products, natural gas, petroleum, petroleum products, electric, steam, hydraulic, gas, air, and internal-combustion engines, power machinery, preparation of coal, pumping, refining, roasting, rock excavation, rotary drilling; boring, safety appliance, screening and washing, sizing and classifying, smelting, storage of coal, storage of petroleum, surface transportation, surveying, underground timbering, underground trans-port, ventilation, mine. This exposition is operated by the Merchants and Manufacturers Exchange of New York for the purpose of showing under one roof all lines of machinery and mechanical appliances. FLUORSPAR is found in most of the states from the Rocky Mountains westward, and commercial production of the mineral has been reported from Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Washington. The map in Fig. 1 indicates the general distribution of many of these deposits but it is by no means complete. In the summer of 1926 the writer examined certain deposits of fluor-spar in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Washington; in November, 1927, revisited the Jamestown, Colo., district, and in earlier years examined deposits in Colorado and New Mexico. Based on notes of his own and. on descriptions and other data by H. A. Aurand, H. W. Davis, R. B. Ladoo, V. C. Heikes, W. D. Johnston, Jr., and by producers of fluorspar, he prepared the following brief descriptions of deposits and estimates of reserves of fluorspar, originally for the use of the subcommittee on fluorspar of the Joint Committee on Foreign and Domestic Mining Policy and on Industrial Preparedness respectively of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Descriptions of many fluorspar deposits in various western states and districts have been published. It is not feasible to summarize this literature here, but the appended bibliography will indicate to the interested reader what papers are available.

Large volumes of hydrogen are liberated at the cathode during electrolytic precipitation of manganese. Most of the gas escapes from the electrolyte, but a considerable amount may be entrapped in the manganese plate. Gas has been observed to escape from manganese melts in puffs that bite at the surface. It has been reported that castings made with electrolytic manganese tend to rise in the molds; for this reason the manganese is often treated to remove hydrogen before the melt is made or it is premelted and used as cast manganese in making the alloys. The effect of hydrogen on the properties of manganese and its alloys is not known, but its effect on iron and iron alloys has been studied extensively.l.2 The close relationship between iron and manganese suggests that hydrogen may have a similar effect on the properties of manganese and its alloys. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the amount of hydrogen or other gases in typical commercial electrolytic manganese sheet and to investigate ways of removing it most conveniently. Apparatus The apparatus used is shown schematically in Fig. I. It consists of a chamber A in which the metal sample is placed, a vacuum or pressure gauge B, volume gauge C, vacuum pump D, hydrogen container E, auxiliary gas chamber F, and furnace G. The specimen chamber was made of two concentric quartz tubes. The outer one, a, connects with the closed gas system and is surrounded by the furnace G. A second tube, b, fits closely inside a and has a small end that projects into the space for the specimen and holds the thermocouple for measuring the temperature of the sample. The inner tube is joined to the outer tube outside the furnace, with rubber tape and sealing wax, to prevent gas leakage into or out of the closed system. This type of specimen container is loaded very easily and can be used several times if molten metal does not come in contact with the quartz. An ordinary mercury manometer B is used to measure the pressure in the system. The volume gauge C is essentially another mercury manometer, but the volume of the column is much larger than normal and the height of the mercury can be varied by raising or lowering the well H. In this apparatus the tube had a volume of IOO C.C. for a 60-cm. length. For larger changes in gas volumes, auxiliary containers F were used to increase the volume of the system by known amounts. Valves were arranged so that these auxiliary containers could be filled from the system and evacuated by the pump as often as necessary to accommodate the increases in the volume of gas in the system. The furnace G, used to heat the samples, was equipped with an automatic temperature controller, which maintained the desired temperatures within ± 5°C.

Large striation-free single crystals of bismuth have been grown from the melt by rapid freezing. Zone-refined bismuth, together with doping impurities if desired, is placed in a shallow flat-bottomed graphite boat and melted in air with a propane hand torch. The torch is then withdrawn in a manner which causes the melt to freeze direction-ally. Crystallization, which resuires only a few minutes, usually results in the formation of a single crystal even when a seed crystal is not used. Crys -tals of any desired orientation may be grown by using oriented seeds. Undoped crystals grown by this method have residual resistivity ratios greater than 200. THE growth of large single crystals of bismuth by either the Czochralski or horizontal zoning technique is not entirely satisfactory. Specifically, difficulties are encountered in producing single crystals of the required dimensions in all desired orientations, and striations caused by low-angle polysynthetic twins are frequently present in the crystals. In addition, both methods are time-consuming and require special apparatus of some complexity. A simpler method has now been developed for growing large striation-free bismuth single crystals of desired orientation in a short time. Fig. 1 shows a typical setup consisting of a rectangular graphite boat which contains zone-refined bismuth, a 1/8-in.-thick flat quartz plate which covers the entire inner bottom of the boat, and three additional quartz plates about 1/4 in. thick which are used to separate the bismuth from the graphite everywhere except at a small area at the left of the boat. The graphite boat is 1 in. high, and its sides and bottom are about 1/8 in. thick. The quartz plates should be smooth and clean. The graphite boat is heated from the right with a propane torch, as shown in Fig. 1, until the bismuth is completely melted. The melt has the shape of a triangle with a narrow neck at the apex farthest from the torch. The melt is frozen direc-tionally by gradually moving the torch toward the right, away from the boat. The bismuth in contact with the graphite, at the left end of the neck, freezes first. The freezing interface then moves down the neck into the main bulk of material, where it develops a convex shape ideal for the continuation of single-crystal growth. The interface continues to move through the melt until the entire bulk is solid. The entire procedure may be completed, in air, in a matter of minutes. The technique described almost always yields a single crystal whose basal plane is nearly perpendi,cular to the bottom of the graphite boat. In earlier experiments, in which the bottom of the melt was in direct contact with the graphite boat, single crystals were grown with basal planes parallel, perpendicular, or at some intermediate angle to the bottom of the boat. At times the orientation of the bulk of the material differed from the orientation of the material in the narrow neck. In these cases, a nucleation site initiated the growth of a differently oriented crystal, and the thermal conditions favored the new orientation over the initial one. The thermal conditions depend on a number of factors, including the heating technique, the placement, shape, and thickness of the quartz plates, the thickness of the walls and bottom of the graphite boat, and the quantity of bulk bismuth employed. All of these factors, plus the initial orientation and the presence and effectiveness of nucleation sites, will determine the orientation of the final large single-crystal slab. When a crystal of specific orientation is desired, an oriented section of a rapid-freeze crystal is shaped by spark cutting and grinding for use as a seed. To grow a doped crystal, the desired impurity is placed in the graphite boat together with the bismuth chunks and seed. Crystals doped with mercury, cadmium, lead, and selenium have been grown. The rate of freezing is so great that the distribution coefficient of any impurity approximates unity. On a gross scale, therefore, impurities should be more homogeneously distributed in rapid-freeze crystals than in Czochralski or zoned crystals. Because of the possibility of constitutional supercooling, however, it is quite possible that impurities are not homogeneously distributed on a microscopic scale in the rapid-freeze crystals. Generally the single crystal slabs which have been prepared are initially 5 to 7 mm thick. Thicker crystals may be obtained by using one of these slabs as a seed. Book Review Mexico, TODAY AND Tomorrow. By E. D. Trowbridge, Detroit. The McMillan Co., New York, 1919, 353 pp., 7;2 X 5 in. $2.00. The first eight chapters are devoted to an historical narrative of the Mexican peoples from the earliest times to the close of the war with the United States in 1345. "In dealing with events antedating what may be termed modern Mexico" the author has "made no attempt at original research, and so far as concerns anything prior to 1900, the work here presented is a repetition, a reflection, of the findings of opinions of Fiske, Prescott, Bancroft, Luis Perez Verdia and other authorities." The remainder of the hook deals with Mexico during and since the Diaz regime. It is interesting throughout but is not always convincing or consistent. Social conditions are described in a way illuminating and possible only to one who is familiar with the peon and his hitherto seemingly hopeless position in reference to the wage system and church oppression. In fact, the author makes the hold accusation that the "primitive rather than immoral" condition of the peons in the matter of their marital relations is due to the disregard of the church for their welfare and capabilities. The true accounts of the Madero revolution and the Huerta regime read like fascinating medieval fiction. The reason given for men remaining in the Madero army is still the controlling one regarding any of the armies there. "They had horses, arms, all the food they wanted, money to spend and no work." The discussion of Mexican financial schemes is wholly from the Carranza viewpoint. To meet a monthly deficit of ten million pesos the author says "the government forced loans from the National Bank, and Bank of London and Mexico, and repeated the operation several times, finally practically exhausting their bullion and cash reserves. Hostile foreigners refer to this operation as the looting of the hanks! Drastic as this action was, there was good ground on which to justify it." However, that necessity knows no law is never an acceptable tenet except to him who applies the screws. The discussion of the economic problems and their solution is rather chimerical and presupposes a civil and national virtue in the present government not discernible except to one ultra friendly. The book is an interesting exposition of the very much involved situation from the viewpoint of approval of both the Carranza government and the attitude of the United States in its dealings with him. The editing of the book leaves something to he desired. P. E. B.

It is desired to call the attention of young men who have had technical training and experience to the fact that their abilities can best be put at the service of the country by selecting a branch of service in which their special qualifications will be of the greatest use. The submarine force of the United States Navy requires the services, as officers on board submarines, of young men who have had technical training in mechanical and electrical engineering and who have had experience in these professions. It is intended to enroll a number of such men as provisional ensigns in the Naval Reserve Force, give then a course of instruction in deck duties at Annapolis and a course in submarine work at New London. Those who successfully pass these courses will then be sent on hoard submarines for regular duty. It is requested that any men who desire this duty and who are qualified as below outlined send their names and addresses to the Commander Submarine Force, U. S. S. GEOGRAPHICALLY, North Carolina consists of three divisions, the coastal plain on the east, the piedmont plateau in the center, and the Appalachian mountain region on the west. Geologically, the State may be divided into two main divisions, an eastern or coastal plain region, and a western or piedmont plateau and mountain region. The eastern region is underlain with unconsolidated sands, clays, marls, and shell limestones varying in age from Cretaceous to Recent. The western region is, in general, underlain with gneisses, schists, slates, sheared volcanics, and igneous intrusives of Pre-Cambrian age. In the mountain and upper piedmont portion of the western region are several areas of irregularly metamorphosed sediments of early Paleozoic age. Throughout the piedmont plateau and a part of the mountain portion of the western region, important areas are underlain with igneous intrusives of late Carboniferous age. Along the eastern edge of the piedmont plateau are two narrow belts, trending northeast-southwest, underlain with sediments of upper Triassic age. Although North Carolina contains a

THE agreement of September, 1922, between the anthracite operators and the United Mine Workers of America, which followed the 54.5 months strike during the summer of that year, contained the following provision : The parties unite in a recommendation to Congress that legislation be forthwith enacted creating a separate anthracite coal commission with authority to investigate and report promptly on every phase of the industry and the parties hereby ask the President to request the enactment by Congress of the recommended legislation. The continuance of production after Aug. 31, 1923, shall be upon such terms as the parties may agree-upon in the light of the report of the Commission.
