ThE James diagonal-plane slimer is specially adapted to handle the finest slimes, but it will also handle sands as coarse as 40-mesh. The saving efficiency of this machine is due to the original construction ,of the deck, and to the rapid reciprocating movement imparted to it by the head-motion. The deck consists of a plurality of connected planes, having a certain fixed ratio of inclination one to another. These planes intersect each other diagonally to the stroke-line of the table and are arranged so as to give the pulp on the table a double treatment. This double concentration performed by the diagonal-plane deck produces cleaner concentrates and tailings than those obtained by the operation of two separate machines. The action of the diagonal planes settles, combines, and holds all the concentrates in one compact mass, sharply defined from the gangue, and easily cut away without loss. Many slime-concentrating machines distribute the feed-pulp for a distance of 4 or 5 ft. only, and upon a very limited settling-surface. This results in a thick, heavy deposit, from which it is impossible to stratify the values and wash away the gangue, the resulting products being dirty concentrates, and tailings carrying high values. The diagonal-plane slimer distributes the feed-pulp for a distance of 10 ft., and upon a settling-surface having an area of 40 sq. ft.; in other words, it spreads the pulp thinly on the table, which allows the metallic values to settle through the gangue quickly, forming a bottom stratum from which the thinly-distributed overlying stratum of gangue is easily brushed away by the feed-water without disturbing the underlying concentrates. Instantaneous resistance change during martensitic transformation in Fe-30 at. pct Ni alloy has been studied using a low-noise electronic system. The smallest signals recorded in this investigation were of the order of 10 pv. These small signals did not show the initial increase reported by earlier investigators to support a double shear mechanism.&apos; A variety of pulse shapes and sizes was observed during "burst" transformations, and these signals were neither a linear function of the size of martensite plates nor of the volume fraction transformed. Even the smallest signals, presumably from single plates, showed complications resulting from elastic and/or plastic deformation, shock wave propagation, and so forth, which are inherent in the growth process of a martensite plate. The time of formation and interface velocity determined froni this experiment agree very well with the pioneering work of Bunshalz and Mehl.&apos; AN Fe-30 at. pct Ni (c0.005 pct C) alloy was used to study the time of formation of martensite plates. Martensitic transformations, unlike the nucleation and growth processes, are usually characterized by an extremely fast reaction rate. During the transformation, the crystal structure changes and this change is propagated through a finite volume of the parent crystal lattice within a very short time interval. The interface between the two phases probably consists of moving dislocations, and the time of formation of the plate depends on how fast this dislocation interface can move. Knapp and Dehlin~er or Cottrell and Bilby mechanisms, or similar dislocation models, can be used to calculate the time of formation of a martensite plate of a given size. In the past, conventional photographic technique475 as well as electrical resistivity techniques"~-" have been used to measure the time of formation of a martensite plate. The specific resistance of the martensitic phase in Fe-30 at. pct Ni alloy is lower than that of the austenite phase. Therefore if a current is passed through a small austenite sample in series with a large external resistance, then one would observe a voltage change across the sample as martensite is formed. Such dc measurements are shown in Fig. 1. The initial large voltage drop in Fig. 1, at the M, temperature, is due to a "burst" transformation where a large number of plates are formed in a cataclysmic manner within a very short interval of time. Even during the later stages of transformation as shown in Fig. 1, one can observe discontinuous voltage changes due to small bursts. In order to resolve the time scale of such discontinuous stages, the voltage signals are amplified and fed into a highspeed oscilloscope. In this investigation a low-noise amplifier was used for the first stage of amplification. The signal to noise ratio was further improved by the design of a pulse transformer. This transformer was capable of amplifying the signal by a factor of six. Voltage signals were studied over a wide time scale ranging from 2 sec to 0.1 psec. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Specimen Preparation. Specimens were cut from induction-melted Fe-30 at. pct Ni (<0.005C) alloy and cold-rolled to 0.2 by 1 mm cross section and an average length of 5 cm. During mechanical shaping, the specimens were strain-annealed at 950°C for 24 hr in vacuum. Finally the finished samples were vacuum-annealed at 1000°C for 6 hr and water-quenched to room temperature. The average grain diameter was 0.02 cm. B) Cooling System. The M, temperature of the alloy was -55°C. Fig. 2 shows the arrangement which was used to cool the specimen at a slow rate. The specimens were mounted inside a i -in.-diam hole in the 2-in.-long section of the copper specimen holder. This cavity was filled with silica gel. ON the afternoon of Feb. 20 of this year a new volcano was born in the center of the State of Michoacan, Mexico, about 100 miles inland from the Pacific Coast. Creation of this new mountain - forming crater began on an almost flat cultivated field at the south margin of a small basin about a mile in diameter and having an altitude of approximately 6800 ft. above sea level. This basin is connected to a gently inclined plain that forms the Parangaricutiro valley, the chief town of this municipality, bearing the same name as the valley, being situated three miles from the site of the new crater. The village of Paracutin, from which the new volcano received its name, is about one mile to the northwest of the crater. From the City of Mexico to the volcano is a distance of 330 miles. The paved highway running from Mexico City to Guadalajara, by way of Toluca and Morelia, is left at Carapan; from here another paved branch highway goes to Uruapan. The town of Paracutin is reached by a narrow dirt road 18 miles from Uruapan and connects with a road leading to Parangaricutiro where horses may be hired for a 40-minute trip to a place where visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of the volcano. It is possible to get within half a mile of the point of eruption in this manner.

LMENITE, rutile, zircon, and other heavy minerals are found in small amounts in the sand that covers most of Florida. Small enriched deposits occur on the beaches and coastal dunes. One beach deposit east of Jacksonville was worked during World War I and another near Vero Beach during World War 11. Both ceased operation when the resumption of imports reduced prices. Early in World War II reduction of rutile imports made a domestic source of the mineral necessary to maintain the expansion of armaments. Explorations made near Jacksonville discovered a relatively large body of low-grade ore about 10 miles inland from the beaches. A plant installed by Rutile Mining Co. of Florida using both flotation and tables encountered difficulties because of low plant capacity and organic slimes in the ore. In 1944 Humphreys Gold Corp. solved the problem of concentrating the low-grade ore by using the newly developed Humphreys spiral concentrator and by mining with a hydraulic dredge. This combination of low cost mining and concentration permitted the plant to continue operation in competition with foreign ores when imports were resumed following the war. The success of the Jacksonville operation renewed interest in Florida as a source of titanium. An extensive survey of the state was made by E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co., Inc., under the direction of J. L. Gillson in 1945 to 1946. Sampling was carried on by drive pipe drilling to depths of 20 to 25 ft. Encouraging values were discovered near the location of the present Trail Ridge mine, 50 miles southwest of Jacksonville, near the town of Starke. The United States Bureau of Mines was interested in exploring for heavy minerals in Florida, and on the recommendation of both the state geologist of Florida and of Du Pont geologists, drilled deeper where marginal indications were found on Trail Ridge. In 1947 it was discovered that sufficiently higher values occurred at depth to make the deposit commercial. The orebody at Trail Ridge is a long sand deposit averaging about 1 mile in width and 35 ft in depth. It is approximately 1 1/2 miles wide at the north end of the portion now being worked, tapering to a blunt point 3 miles to the south. The ore reaches a maximum depth of 65 ft near the center and feathers out into barren sand at the edges. The ground surface is relatively flat and is covered with vegetation including pine, scrub oak, palmetto, and occasionally in swampy areas, cypress. The remain of a dense woody growth underlies and marks the bottom of the Ore &apos;One. It is difficult to drill through this layer, but in some cases where it is less than 5 ft thick it has been possible to drive through the wood. Sand lying below is coarser than that in the ore zone and contains no values. The wood layer consists of unconsolidated carbonized fragments of branches and other forest trash associated with a considerable amount of ar-

Historically, rock deposits and sand deposits of titanium minerals came into production about the same time, although there may be some argument as to what is meant by production. Beach deposits of heavy minerals in India (Figs. 1-4) and Brazil (Figs. 5) were worked for monazite about the turn of century, but as there was then no market for titanium minerals, these were thrown away. The rock rutile deposits at Roseland, Va., Fig. 6, were worked to supply rutile for titanium chemicals and for coloring ceramics long before there was a titanium pigment business. The pigment industry started about the middle twenties, both in Europe and the U. S., and almost simultaneously the rock deposits at Ponte Vedra Beach near Jacksonville, Fla., were worked for titanium content. Since those days, production from both types of deposits has continued to grow at a rapid rate; many deposits of both types have been found, and reserves have grown to very large figures. In total tonnage of reserves, there is no doubt that the rock deposits are far ahead of the sand deposits; nevertheless there is a very large tonnage of commercial sands available. It is the quality of titanium mineral in the sand and the relatively lower costs of operating sand deposits that have kept them abreast, at least in annual tonnage produced, with the rock deposits. The principal titanium mineral used is ilmenite, but as soon as that mineral began to be sought as a titanium ore, it was obvious that there are ilmenites and ilmenites. Textbook ilmenite should have the composition FeOTiO2 and should analyze 52.6 pct TiO2 and 36.8 pct iron as Fe. The Indian ilmenite, for almost a generation the standard ore for manufacturing pigment in the U. S., was found to analyze about 60 pct TiO, and only 24 pct. Fe, and most of the iron is in the ferric condition. The whole process of pigment manufacture in the U. S. was built up on the use of a raw material of that grade, and the American chemical engineers who operate the pigment plants shuddered at the thought of using a rock ilmenite with 45 pct or so of TiO, and nearly 40 pct Fe. Intensive search was made around the world to find other deposits of rich black sand, like the Indian beaches, but although a few were found, there was some objectionable feature about each. A deposit in Senegal, south of Dakar (Fig. 7), was worked for a while, but an organic coating on the grains made attack by acid difficult. Modern practice would have included a scrubbing operation, in a caustic soda bath, to eliminate the organic coating. Brazilian deposits were numerous, but individually small, and shipping from them difficult. Deposits on the east coast of Ceylon had many attractive features, but the ilmenite analyzed only 54 pct TiO2 and could have been used only with a penalty. Sand deposits with 2 pct ilmenite, like those now worked in Florida, would not have been considered commercial ore, even if they had been known at that time. Most rock ilmenites are associated or mixed with hematite or magnetite, which accounts for the lower titanium and higher iron values than in the sand ilmenites. The Norwegians, English, and Germans, with cheap Norwegian rock ore at hand, learned to install in their pigment plants adequate capacity on the black side, as it is calltd, and counterbalanced the extra cost of plant, and larger amount of acid used, by the lower cost of ore. When World War II arrived, two of the largest pigment manufacturers in the U. S. had to learn how to use the Adirondack ilmenite, but one of them very gladly went back to sand ores when the Florida deposits came into large-scale production after the war. The other continues to use Adirondack ilmenite and finds it commercially attractive to do so. Rutile is not a raw material for titanium pigment manufacture by the sulfate process, since it is insoluble in sulfuric acid. In addition to its small consumption in chemicals and ceramics it began to be used in quantity in welding rod coatings. With the outbreak of World War 11, and the tremendous need for welding rods in shipbuilding and other structural steel construction, rutile suddenly became in heavy demand. The sand deposits on the eastern shore of Australia (Fig. 8A) which had been worked in a small way since 1934 were brought into production, and some stream placers in Brazil were worked and rutile concentrates shipped to American

THIS investigation is a part of the United States Bureau of Mines work in conserving the Nation&apos;s resources. The isothermal sections presented were developed as a guide to a comprehensive investigation of the properties and fabricating characteristics of copper-base alloys containing manganese and tin. These alloys are being investigated as possible replacements for the commercial bronzes containing substantial quantities of tin. Development of the isothermal sections has, therefore, been limited to the area between 0 to 20 pct Mn and 0 to 25 pct Sn. Since Heusler1 reported the ferromagnetic properties of the Cu-Mn-Sn alloys in 1903, the system has been the subject of several investigations. These studies were largely concerned with correlation of magnetic properties and crystal structure.2-6 Vero,&apos; however, established the solidus surface of the system, between 20 pct Mn and 40 pct Sn, by thermal and microscopic methods. The a, ß, and y solid solutions were also observed by Vero and reported to extend into the interior of the ternary system. For the present study, the annotated diagram of the Cu-Sn system prepared by Raynor&apos; and the Cu-Mn diagram by Dean and coworkers9 were used as the binary borders of the ternary system. Procedure The metals used in this investigation were electrolytic manganese, washed cathode copper, and three-star tin. The manganese, produced at the Boulder City pilot plant of the Bureau of Mines, had a purity of 99.9 pct; the copper contained less than 0.004 pct Bi and 0.001 pct S; the tin contained 0.070 pct Pb, 0.070 pct Sb, 0.050 pct Fe, and 0.065 pct Si. Heats of 1 lb were melted in alundum crucibles with a 3-kw induction furnace. The heats were chill-cast in iron or copper molds to form 6-in. ingots 3/4 in. in diameter. Molds were washed with graphite or zirconia, depending on the manganese content, and preheated to 150°C. The maximum impurity content of any alloy was 0.03 pct Fe, 0.02 pct Si, and 0.02 pct Al; in most cases, they contained less than half this quantity of any of these impurities. Composition of the alloys and their treatment prior to homogenizing are shown in Fig. 1. Designations adjacent to each composition refer to the heat numbers. With a few exceptions, ingots containing 20 pct Sn or less were hot-swaged. These ingots were swaged, after a 24-hr preheat at 650°C, to obtain a total reduction of 70 pct in cross section. Intermittent reheating was necessary, and reductions were limited to either 0.025 or 0.050 in. in diameter per pass. Selection of a 200-hr homogenizing treatment was based on extensive experiments which indicated that virtual equilibrium was reached after 150 hr. Structures were retained by quenching in water. Grain sizes in the specimens homogenized at 350" and 450°C were generally small. These homogenizing treatments were preceded by a 50-hr anneal at 650°C to facilitate phase identification by increasing the grain size in these specimens. The specimens were furnace-cooled from this temperature to the homogenizing temperature, and the heat treatment was continued for the standard 200-hr period. The homogenized samples were bisected to provide an internal section for metallographic examination. Optimum definition of the microstructure was obtained by successive polishing and etching. Quarter-strength ASTM copper reagent No. 13 gave the most satisfactory results.10 Filings from interior sections of the samples were used for diffraction studies. These filings were annealed in evacuated glass tubes at homogenizing temperatures for periods exceeding 50 hr and quenched in water. During this treatment the manganese content was reduced by significant amounts, probably by vaporization. This change in composition was considered in applying the diffraction data, which were used only as a means of identifying phases where the data were consistent with the metallographic evidence. Phase Identification The a solid solution is readily distinguished by the copper-colored, twinned, polyhedral grains, as shown in Fig. 2, and a face-centered cubic X-ray pattern. Tukon indentations, using a 25-g load, indicate a Knoop hardness of 155 for a quenched from 650°C. Using white light developed by a Wratten 78 A filter, the ß grains in etched specimens have a dark brown tint in contrast to the lighter copper-colored grains of the a phase. Knoop hardness values of 284 were obtained for the ß structure in specimens quenched from 650°C. The ß structure was also distinguished from the a phase by its body-centered cubic lattice. The acicular structure appearing in Fig. 3 was evident in several alloys of higher tin content after quenching from either 750&apos; or 650°C. Since a trans-

THE function of a pyrometer protecting tube is to maintain an atmosphere about the thermocouple most favorable to its continued accuracy and long life, and at the same time permit the weld of the couple to attain the full temperature of the area or object being measured. In addition to protecting the thermocouple from the chemical or alloying effects of the products of combustion or bath being measured, the tube must also protect the couple from mechanical injury. The conditions met in practice vary so much that no one material is suitable for all applications. The usefulness as well as the expense of maintenance of a pyrometer system are influenced greatly by a choice of the most suitable protecting tube. The tube must protect the couple without itself becoming too great an expense item. The protecting tube should have the following qualities: (1) A melting point well above the highest temperature to be encountered. (2) Sufficient strength through the entire range of temperatures to hold up its own weight and resist such shock and jar as are unavoidable. (3) It must be impervious to the atmosphere or bath to which it will be subject. (4) It must not give off any vapor injurious to the couple. (5) It must not form any oxides fusible below the highest temperature to be measured. The proper location of the tube in the furnace is almost as important as the choice of material. The tube must be placed as near to the work to be heated .as possible. It must be kept out of the direct path of flame, both because that would give too high temperature readings and because partly burned fuel will destroy the tube faster than the quiet products of combustion.

The fracture behavior of a 50 pct Cu-50 pct Fe mi-croduplex alloy, laminated composites of copper and iron and an extruded 50-50 Cu-Fe elemental powder composite was studied. Very low ductile-brittle transition temperatures were achieved in all cases, but for different reasons. In the microduplex alloy both the initiation and also the propagation of cleavage fractures appeared retarded by the very small in-terphase distances. In the composites, crack propagation through the sumples was prevented in most cases by delamination fractures perpendicular to the advancing cracks. These delaminations occurred at different regions and by different mechanisms in the various composites. In the extruded powder composite, de-lamination appeared to take place along preexisting flaws. In the crack arrest geometry of the laminated plates, delamination took place by localized shear fractures within the copper near the Fe-Cu interfaces. In this case delamination was enhanced by thicker laminate layers, and by having the resistance to shear failure of the copper sufficiently low compared to the toughness of the iron. BRITTLE fracture in engineering materials has long been a problem, and many different ways of preventing it have been considered. One method that has been of growing interest lately is to prevent crack propagation by the introduction of mechanical discontinuities into the structure. These discontinuities may act in several ways. They may simply act as crack stoppers. They may introduce secondary fractures such as de-laminations that deflect the initial crack into new, less damaging directions. Alternatively, they may subdivide a fairly large bulk sample that would have been loaded in plane strain, for example, into a number of subunits that are individually loaded in plane stress and thus are more resistant to fracture. Other mechanisms, or combinations of mechanisms, are also feasible. A number of methods exist for introducing mechanical discontinuities into a structure. Composites by their nature have discontinuities in structure, and numerous studies have shown that fracture propagation in materials of this type can be radically changed by suitable control of the composite parameters. Of particular significance to the present work are recent investigations of layered composites made by joining high strength steel sheets by various means.&apos;-4 These studies have shown that through proper control of the mechanical properties of the bonds joining the sheets it was possible to introduce delamination fractures that markedly improved the overall toughness of the composites and in some cases completely prevented through-the-thickness fractures. Another technique for introducing structural discontinuities is simply to use a two-phase alloy. It has been recognized for many years that a small amount of a second phase may improve toughness either by homogenizing plastic flow and thus preventing localized stress concentrations that nucleate fracture, or by interacting with an advancing crack. In most of these studies of two-phase materials, the decreases in ductile-brittle transition temperatures produced by the second phase were relatively small. More recently, work on two-phase stainless steels having a very fine grain microduplex structure has shown that the presence of on the order of 40 to 50 pct of a tougher second phase may lower the ductile-brittle transition temperature of the brittle phase by approximately 300°F. 5-7 In these alloys delaminations were seldom observed. The tougher second phase appeared to minimize the ease of both the initiation and the propagation of cleavage fractures. These results show that both the composite approach and the microduplex alloy approach are effective methods of preventing brittle fracture. Therefore, it was of interest to compare the fracture behavior of a microduplex alloy with composites made from the two-phases that were present in the alloy. To simplify this comparison the 50 pct Cu-50 pct Fe system was selected for study. At low temperatures the equilibrium tie line phases in this system are essentially pure ferrite and pure copper. A 50-50 alloy was cast and hot worked to produce a microduplex structure. Two types of composites were studied; laminated structures prepared by roll bonding iron and copper sheets of the tie line compositions, and an extruded powder composite made from high purity elemental powders. The fracture behavior of these materials was then compared. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloy Preparation. The 50-50 Fe-Cu alloy and the components for the roll bonded composites were prepared by vacuum induction melting 30-lb heats using electrolytic grades of iron and copper as charge materials. DESPITE the meetings and discussions on over- production the situation still continues to grow worse instead of better. The demand for oil has dropped to 2,700,000 bbl. per day. On the other hand domestic production has risen to 2,700,000 bbl. with prospects of further increases, and if imports and natural gas-gasoline be added to this the current supply is about 3,100,000 bbl. per day. Though during the summer and early fall the demand may exceed this figure for a few months the prospects are that &apos;the average demand during 1929 will be at least 200,000 bbl. per day less than the present current supply, meaning additions to stocks over the year of about 75,000,000 bbl.

INTRODUCTION During the past few years emphasis has been placed upon methods of estimating the future expectancy of gas production from natural gas fields. Before technical methods were applied, the production expectancy over future years was based upon the knowledge of gas well behavior, learned through long experience and embedded in the "know-how" of men long in the gas producing business. It is doubtful that a technical study of future expectancy of a gas field or a group of fields was ever prepared for the preliminary planning of a natural gas pipe line system built prior to about five years ago. The decline in well production capacity was naturally recognized by all familiar with the business since its earliest beginnings more than 75 years ago. In 1953, the Bureau of Mines published Monograph Number 7, "Back-Pressure Data on Natural Gas Wells and Their Application to Production Practices," which gave to the industry the first technical analysis of the decline in production of individual gas wells. This method affords a means of estimating the future production in relation to decline in reservoir pressure. The demand for technical determination of expectancy of future gas productivity from fields or a group of fields led technical men to the application of the knowledge of well behavior to the problems. The decline in a well&apos;s ability to produce as pressures declined could be estimated by the use of the curve known as the "back-pressure potential curve" as developed by the Bureau of Mines. A field containing few, or even numerous, wells could be analyzed on the basis of the sum of potentials of all wells. In most studies of this nature, the problem is to estimate the rate of production that can be expected, not only from present wells but also, from wells that will in the future have to be drilled into the reservoir being studied. The "back-pressure potential" method requires that the following data be known or estimated: (1) Proved gas reserves. (2) Current shut-in pressures and rate at which shut-in pressures change with production. (3) Back pressure potential data on wells in the source of supply. (4) Ultimate number of wells which will supply gas, and their potential. (5) Limitations on productivity such as line pressures against which the wells will produce, friction drop in the producing string, and so forth. It is evident that the resulting estimate of gas available in each year for a future of say, 20 years, contains many uncertainties. While the method may have considerable merit for a field that is fully developed, it cannot be completely dependable in fields that are only partially developed. In such cases, some of the data upon which it is based can only be estimated or assumed. In the study of this problem during the past few years, a method has been developed which we believe has great merit, especially when applied to fields subject to substantial future drilling, and when applied to the study of fields which, on the average, appear to have characteristics similar, in general, to the average of the fields used in the development of the "yardstick" outlined herein. From an analysis of the production history of 49 reservoirs which are depleted, or nearly depleted, a curve has been constructed which shows the average performance of the reservoirs during the declining stages of production. When properly applied, this "average performance curve" can be used to determine the stage of depletion at which a reservoir or group of reservoirs will no longer be able to yield a given percentage of the original reserves. "AVAILABILITY" AND "AVAILABILITY STUDIES" The rate at which. a reservoir will yield its gas depends basically upon physical factors, such as the thickness and permeability of the sand, the effect of water drive, if any, and other conditions, and upon economic factors, such as the number of wells drilled. Within the ranges set by the physical conditions, a rate of delivery tends finally to become established. The rate (or range of rates) represents a balance between the interests of the operator, who desires the maximum return from his property and of the pipe line owner, who desires to maintain a firm supply for his market. This balance, which is influenced by the terms of the contract, determines the capacity which will be developed by the operator, and the time and rate at which the decline in production is permitted to occur. WHILE much geological work and drilling have been done in Venezuela, the incompleteness of geological evidence obtainable and the restricted areas in which drilling has been done make any estimates of oil resources extremely speculative. Nevertheless, it is felt that the data given are justified, in the belief that the ideas of a geologist familiar with the region are better than those of a promoter. The oldest beds of interest to oil men are those of the Cretaceous, which are well developed in eastern Venezuela and about parts of Lake Maracaibo. In both cases, a hard massive limestone is overlain by a great thickness, most of which is shale. In the west, in places this shale is more than 2000 ft. (610 m.) thick, while in the east it may attain 3500 ft., (1067 m.). The limestone and parts of the shale are oil producing. In the east, the Tertiary where present is almost entirely covered by the Quarternary, but in the west it is well developed. In probable unconformity over the Cretaceous shales is found a series of sandstones and shales, which may beg called the lower coal series. It is well developed southwest of the lake, where it is the oil container, and is probably the lowest series exposed east of the lake. Above this is the Pauji shale, which is probably the point of origin of all the oil east of Lake Maracaibo and in the State of Falcon. It has a thickness of about 3000 ft. (914 m.) in the Mene Grande region. The upper coal series is developed as a great thickness of sands, shales, and clays, with some partly consolidated limestone. Its thickness may be as great as 10,000 ft. It is the oil container of the Falcon-El Mene region and a probable location for oil in some of the area about the lake. It may or may not include the so-called Maracaibo series in which the oil is found at Mene Grande. Over much of Venenzuela, the Quarternary is present in unknown thickness, which probably is not great. It obscures oil structure in all cases and presents the greatest hazard of oil exploration for the fields which probably exist below.

An analysis of heal conduction in the freezing of a solution has been performed. The case considered is the semi-infinite mass of solution, bounded by a con-stant-temperature plane with one-dimensional heat flow, Numerical cooling rate and freezing rate distributions hare been calcutated for the particular case of unidirectional freezing of aqueous solutions against. a cold copper chill. The solution at each level parallel to the chill surface is subjected to a spectra of frcezing rates; the freezing rate is inilially lour., passes through a maximum, and then decreases until solidification is camplete. Arange and maximum freeeing rates are inversely proportional to the square of distance from the chill surface. The temperature of the chill surface in contact with the solution remains constant during solidification. Experimentally, it is observed that deudrite sparing increases linearly with distance from the chill surface; in the light of heat -flow analysis this means that the dendrile spacing is imersely proportional to the square root of the maximum freezing rate. SOLIDIFICATION of liquids is accompanied by rejection of latent heat at the solid-liquid interface. The over-all rate of liquid to solid transformation is governed by the rate of heat extraction. Analysis of the heat transfer in the liquid during freezing is important since it determines the freezing rate and resulting structure. A considerable amount of work has been done on metallic systems since solidification is frequently a major step in processing metals. Unidirectional freezing from heat sinks has been treated by several investigators.1-4 Much of the work has been limited to the simpler case of substances such as pure metals which freeze isothermally at a unique transformation temperature. In this case the thickness of the solid zone y, next to a chill surface. is a parabolic function of the time. 8. where a and b are constants. Eq. |1| is a close approximation giving the progress of solidification for the case in which there is a small but finite thermal contact resistance at the interface between the freezing liquid and the chill.&apos; It has been used with some success in connection with large steel ingots4 when the therma1 contact resistance is negligibly small (as is the case when water is brought into contact with the metal chill). The constant, b. becomes zero and Eq. [l] is then exact. even when the thermal properties of the chill and the freezing liquid depend on temperature. Analysis of unidirectional solidification of solutions is more complicated since the latent heat is evolved over a range of temperatures. Next to the all-solid zone in contact with the chill surface there is a solid plus liquid zone in which solidification takes place. Although the equations presented are considered quite general the numerical and experimental results are for freezing of aqueous solutions from a copper chill. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Solutions of potassium chloride, sodium chloride. and lithium chloride have been used. These solutions form a eutectic: a typical phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. A solution at its liquid us temperature is poured into a tygon tube mounted on a relatively large copper chill. The chill is immersed in a freezing mixture of dry ice and acetone at -70°C. A thermocouple connected to a high-speed recorder was mounted near the top of the chill to measure the fluctuation in the temperature of chill surface in contact with the solution. In this system the progress of solidification can be visually observed through the tygon tube. After the specimens freeze to a desired height they are removed from the copper chill and stripped from the tygon tube. Longitudinal and transverse sections are cut from the specimen for micrographic examination. Specimens in the form of a thin slice are mounted on a transparent glass slide by freezing small drops of water around the periphery. NEW demands for underground power in the Miami mine of the Miami Copper Co., Miami, Ariz. has brought about expansion of the distribution system for both ac and dc power. Progress in mining equipment and the normal changes in the mine were responsible for this increased demand. Early power requirements were for pumping and haulage. A 440 v ac power line down No. 5 shaft took care of a small pumping load and shaft station lighting, 275 v dc power was generated by motor generator sets on the surface, with a churn drill hole from surface to the 570 haulage level serving as a cableway. Electric lights were installed where power was available, and thus were confined to the haulage level and shaft stations. All industrial power in the Miami area is 25-cycle, which dates back to the hydroelectric generator installation at Roosevelt Dam in 1908-10. The Problem The main haulage level was moved to the 720 level and later, to the 1000 level, requiring a longer feeder line with the resultant voltage drop. Also, as mining progressed to the east, the churn drill hole for the power cable would have been subjected to subsidence cracks. The first extension in the use of electricity was in electric blasting. About 1935 the mine went to electric blasting, using the dc haulage current. Bringing electric current to the working levels of the mine for blasting greatly expanded the use of electric lights. Lights were used in tool rooms, powder and cap magazines, stairways, and other semi-permanent installations. Like all mines, Miami Copper began to study and experiment with mechanical mucking and transportation of ore by slushers, shakers, and belts during the late 1930&apos;s and early 1940&apos;s. At the beginning of the program, power was supplied from the haulage level 275 v dc system. Later it became necessary to run a cable, carrying 440 v ac power, down the No. 7 ventilation shaft. The increased use of power came about gradually, and many new problems were added, not the least being the introduction of switch boards and power cables into the working areas of the mine, where drifts and crosscuts take weight, and require repairs. The 25-cycle current presented special problems, in that 25-cycle transformers are twice as large and about 2V2 times as heavy as 60-cycle transformers of the same power output. This statement was essentially true at that time, not because the basic functional and economic principles involved did not frequently favor centrifugal methods, but rather because so many of the highly specialized features of the mechanical and functional peculiarities of continuous centrifuges had not been fully developed. The idea of using centrifuges in mineral dressing is definitely not new. There are literally hundreds of patents on centrifugal machines and processes for the mining industry. Many of them cover principles that are basic to the functioning of most centrifuges in operation today. In spite of this, until 1935, there were practically no successful applications of continuous centrifuges in the United States in the mineral industry, nor for that matter were there more than a mere handful of such machines in operation in North America in any industry. This was true despite the obvious desirability of machines that could furnish the advantages of high centrifugal settling forces in a continuous operation. The reasons for this are simple, even if not obvious: I. Finely divided solids, when thrown out of fluid suspension under high cen- trifugal forces, frequently exhibit physic a properties (particularly rheological or flow properties) that are markedly different from those they possess when settled out by gravity alone, and machines that are not designed in careful detail to cope with these peculiarities &apos;seldom function satisfactorily. 2. Most continuous centrifuges embody a solids-conveying element in the form of a very special screw conveyor. The rotation of this member under conditions of operation culls for drive designs that were not satisfactorily provided until the introduction of the Bird gear unit about 1934. These matters will be touched on later. Continuous centrifuges are now operating successfully in the mineral industry. Some units have singly handled more than 500,000 tons of solids during the past ten years. Generally their operation has been characterized by large unit capacities, complete elimination of labor, minimum supervision, moderate maintenance and power costs. Typical Centrifuge Applications Most materials classified by centrifuges are of subsieve particle size. Practically speaking, this means her than 100-mesh. A unit of measure other than screens is needed in order to consider these products properly. Such a unit is the micron, which is equal to one one-millionth of a meter; roughly1/25,000 of an inch. The opening in a standard 200-mesh screen is about 75 microns while a 325-mesh opening is roughly 43 microns.

The effects of additions of alloying elements on the true-stress, true-strain characteristics of 0.30 pct C, 1.00 pct Mn, 0.30 pct Si pearlitic steel were studied. The alloying elements investigated were C, Mn, Si, P, The alloys are compared on the basis of fracture stress, fracture strain, energy to fracture, rate of strain hardening, strain hardening exponent, height of the flow curve, and lower yield point. IN the past, nearly all studies of the effects of alloying elements on the tensile properties of metals have compared the conventional engineering parameters, namely, tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and reduction of area. Recently, however, the true-stress, true-strain method of recording results from the tension test has been used; Lacy and Gensamer,&apos; Hollomon," and French and Hibbard- are used this method to study the effects of composition on strength and ductility of metals. In this paper, the effects of certain alloying elements on true-stress, true-strain curves of steels with nearly constant grain size and pearlite spacing are presented. The notation employed in this paper is given in Table I. Since the definitions of stress and strain and the analytical geometry of the stress-strain curve have been explained previously, for example by Gensamer,&apos; they will not be reviewed here. However, the method used for the determination of energy to fracture, E,, requires mention. These energy values were calculated on the assumption that the flow curve followed the idealized equation:&apos; corresponds to the specific energy absorption to that strain value. There is justification for preferring the use of eq 1 for the determination of the energy to a particular strain rather than the area under the experimental stress-strain curve, since Gensamer showed that the use of the Bridgman correctione for stress at the neck of a tensile specimen brought the corrected experimental curve nearer to the idealized power-law curve than to the uncorrected experimental curve. However, it should be noted that the difference between the areas under the idealized curve and the experimental curve is not great for strain of less than 1.0, as can be seen from Fig. 1. In his excellent book on the Principles of Flotation, Warkl makes the following significant statement concerning the theory of flotation: Two questions of first-rate importance must be considered . . . First, it must be decided whether the sulfide minerals require a collector in order that they may float, or whether as has been claimed, they possess an inherent float-ability and need no collector. Second, it must be decided whether the xanthate type of collector can react with or be adsorbed by the unchanged sulfide minerals themselves, or whether, as many claim, reaction with the collector is dependent upon initial oxidation of the mineral surface. In the theory of flotation there are no two questions of greater importance than these. Ravitz and Porter2 presented evidence that galena can be floated without a collector, and even without any reagent, provided oxidation products are thoroughly removed from its surface. They found also that thoroughly cleaned galena floated faster when xanthate was used than when a frother alone or no reagent was used, and that, without a collector, the recovery decreased gradually upon exposure of the mineral to air. Their work, however, has met with considerable criticism.l(127).3-6 This paper is presented to answer the objections that have been raised, and to present additional data that confirin their results. The apparatus used to provide oxygen-free conditions for flotation has been described in detail by Ravitz and Porter. An atmosphere of purified nitrogen was maintained within the apparatus; all water and solutions used were freed of dissolved air, and could be transferred where desired by the use of nitrogen Pressure; nitrogen was used as the gaseous medium for flotation. The flotation cell was essentially a glass cylinder 15 cm. long and 4.6 cm. in diameter. Near the bottom was sealed a fritted glass filter, which broke up the gas into small bubbles, and 6 cm. above this filter was a side arm through which the froth overflowed. The pulp was agitated by a glass impeller, which entered the cell through a mercury seal. For each test 17 grams of galena and 75 ml. of water were placed in the cell, after which the speed of the impeller and the rate of gas flow were adjusted. Water was added gradually during the test to keep the froth level at the proper height. The mineral was prepared and cleaned in the following manner. Exceptionally Pure galena was crushed by hand on a clean bucking board, screened to —I50+ 200 mesh, and deslimed on a 200-mesh sieve with a fine spray of water. It was then boiled on a hot plate for a number of hours with several changes of the desired cleaning solution, after which both the solution and the mineral were placed in the "mineral flask" of the apparatus. The cleaning solution was drained off, and the mineral was boiled with oxygen-free water
