The steel industry has a definite need in its tonnage mills for a formula relating expected tensile strength to the analysis of the steel. The McWilliam-Barnes1 and other less comprehensive formulas are used for this purpose, but these formulas were designed for an analysis range that does not include the medium manganese and silicon-bearing steels. This type of steel is being produced to meet the demand for tensile strength slightly higher than that of ordinary structural steel but not high enough to justify expensive alloy steels. The purpose of this paper is to present a somewhat more comprehensive formula based on data accumulated over a number of years by the Inland Steel Co., and to discuss the method followed in obtaining a formula to fit the data. The resultant formula admittedly is still weak in some respects, but for the expanded analysis range appears to be an improvement over the other formulas. It is hoped that with the collection of more data and possible collaboration with other mills studying this problem it will be possible to work out a more nearly perfect formula. Several publications have been issued on this subject. In some, the equation type of relation was evolved while others made a combination of tables and an equation. The latter include work by Campbel12,3 and Webster.4,5 Campbell classified the steels as acid and basic and applied a different formula to each. For basic steels, he used the equation: Teosile etrength = 41500 + 770C + 1000P + yMn [1 y was a variable depending on the carbon and manganese content of the steel and was listed in tables. Webster investigated acid Bessemer steel and developed the equation: Tensile strength = 38000 + 800C + xTP+ yMn [2]

Declining Productivity Index, as considered herein, is a productivity index that has a substantially and consistently decreasing value when measured over a period of a few hours. If not recognized, it may be interpreted as representing an unsettled or unstable condition in a producing well. It forms the basis of a number of predictions as to future performance compared with the performance of wells in which the productivity index does not decline. The nost important of these are that: (I) the rate of oil production will decline more rapidly, (2) the gas-oil ratio will usually increase abnormally, (3) the amount of water ultimately produced will be negligible, if any, (4) stop-cocking will increase current production and decrease gas-oil ratio. When such relative well performance is indicated, it follows that certain reservoir performance and operating practices may be anticipated: (I) disappointing recovery, (2) longer natural flow, (3) no active water drive, (4) better evaluation of acidizing, shooting and reworking, (5) intermittent operation of wells, (6) smaller pumping equipment required. It is significant that the basis of these important predictions is bottom-hole pressure tests that can be made immediately after completion of the wells. Introduction "'Productivity index" is the number of barrels of oil produced per day per pound per square inch of differential pressure between the reservoir and the bottom of the well. "Declining Productivity Index," as considered herein, is a productivity index that has a substantially and consistently decreasing value when measured over a period of a few hours. Productivity index can be determined only when the rate of production can be stabilized. In most wells the rate of production and bottom-hole pressure are easily stabilized to give a constant productivity index for a period of many hours. A few produce so erratically as to preclude probability of an acceptable test in the usual sense. A satisfactory productivity index can be determined in some wells only by gauging the production accurately by hours, measuring the bottom-hole pressure continuously, and from these data calculating the productivity index for successive hours. Such figures frequently will have a decreasing value—that is, a declining productivity index—and when plotted on double. logarithmic cross-section paper with productivity index as ordinate and time as abscissa will be a straight-line curve. The angle between the curve and the abscissa is referred to as the rate of decline. Declining productivity index may appear to be the result of change in permeability to oil due to decreasing saturation of oil and increasing saturation of gas in the reservoir. It is possible that such is in fact the cause, but if so, more is involved than merely relative saturation of oil and gas. This seems evident because the rate of decline in productivity index is substantially the same regardless of the pro-

Silica films hare been rleposited 011 silicon substmtes at 400° to 600°C by a chemical-transport technique using hydrogen fluoride as the transport agent ill a closed system. This transport takes place from a source materia1 1071: temperature to substrates at higher temperatures, as indicated by the thermochemistry of the transport reaction. The experimental variables of- the transport process, such as the substrate temperature, the pressure pi the transport agent, and so forth, have been studied. The rate -determining step of the transport process appears to he the ),ale of chemical reaction in the source region. The transported films are similar to thermally grown silica films in physical proper-ties with the exception of 'some what higher dissolrrtion rates. SILICA films deposited on suitable substrates serve many purposes in electronic devices. They are used for the fabrication of tunneling devices, the surface passivation of devices, and the shielding of devices from nuclear radiation: and as selective masks against the diffusion of specific impurities into semiconductors. Doped silica films can also be used as sources for the diffusion of impurities into semiconductors. Several oxidation and deposition techniques for the preparation of silica films have been developed to meet the requirements of these applications. The therma1 oxidation of silicon by oxygen or steam at temperatures above 900 C is commonly used in silicon technology. The deposition techniques are perhaps more advantageous since they usually require lower temperatures and are not limited to silicon substrates. Silica films have been deposited on silicon and other substrates by reactive sputtering and chemical reactions. The sputtering of silicon in an oxygen atmosphere is capable of depositing good-quality silica films on silicon' and gallium arenide. Many chemical reactions are known to yield silica at room temperature or higher. These reactions may involve intermediate steps. However, the final step yielding silica should take place predominately on the substrate surface in order to produce adherent films. When silica is formed in the gas phase by volume reactions, no adherent deposit can be obtained. Generally, the experimental conditions of a reaction can be varied so that the surface reaction predominates over the volume reaction. The chemical reactions which have been used successfully for the deposition of silica films are briefly as follows. The pyrolysis of alkoxysilanes in an inert atmosphere or under reduced pressure has been employed to deposit silica films on germanium3 and silicon4 at 650" to 750°C in a flow system. The deposition of silica films from alkoxysilanes has also been achieved at nearly room temperature by a low-pressure plasma. Device quality silica films have been deposited on germanium and gallium arsenide by the deposition of an amorphous thin silicon film followed by oxidation at 600" to 700" . Silica films for high-temperature capacitors have been produced by the hydrolysis of silicon tetrabromide at 950°C in argon and hydrogen atmospheres.7 We have developed a chemical-transport technique for the deposition of silica films on semiconductor substrates at relatively low temperatures. The thermochemistry of the transport reaction, the experimental variables of the transport process, and the properties of the transported silica films are described in this paper. THERMOCHEMICAL CONSDERATIONS The transport of solid substances by chemical reactions in the presence of a temperature gradient has been used for the preparation of films and crystals of many electronic materials. In this technique, a gaseous reagent is chosen so that it reacts reversibly with the solid substance under consideration to form volatile products. Since the equilibrium constants of most reactions are temperature-dependent, the transport of these products to regions of suitable temperature in the reaction system would cause the reverse reaction to take place. depositing the original solid. When the equilibrium is shifted toward the formation of the solid as the temperature is decreased, the solid is transported from a high-temperature zone to a lower-temperature region, and vice versa. This chemical-transport technique can be carried out in a closed or gas-flow system. In a closed system, chemical equilibrium is presumably established in the different temperature regions of the system, and the transport agent regenerated in the deposition region repeats the transport process in a cyclic manner. The local chemical equilibrium may not be approached in a flow system: however, this system offers a greater degree of flexibility. Silica reacts reversibly with hydrogen fluoride and this reaction was chosen for the transport process. The over-all reaction between silica and hydrogen fluoride may be written as: SiO2(s) + 4HF(g-) = SiF4Ur) + 2H2O(^)

The subject of the salt-water corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys is somewhat like that of the pitting of stainless steels, in that it involves a relatively small. percentage of the applications but receives a much greater proportion of the publicity. Actually magnesium alloys are in use in many exterior applications as well as interior, with no trouble from corrosion. Magnesium and its alloys have a striking stability against atmospheric attack, being far superior to iron. Specimens exposed unprotected to atmospheric weathering for Io Years show only a superficial surface-film formation. The basic nature of magnesium and of its important alloys is that they are also resistant to the attack of salt water even in an unprotected state, giving substantially no loss in weight after one year of alternate immersion in 3 per cent NaCl solution (Fig. 1). This basic behavior is often masked because of the extreme sensitivity of these alloys to certain impurities and combinations of impurities. It is known, and the subject of increasing emphasis, that higher purity leads generally to greater stability for many materials, non-metallic as well as metallic. However, a review of the literature on the corrosion factors in magnesium alloys shows that almost all researchers worked with base metal in which metallic impurities varied in uncontrolled amounts. The major factor, that of metallic impurities, Probably greatly overshadowed the effects of minor ones such as flux inclusions, nonmetallic impurities, porosity, metallographic state, which these researchers presumed to study. In the present investigation the first observation of interest is that whereas magnesium of commercial purity (99.9 per cent pure) has a corrosion rate in alternate immersion in 3 per cent NaCl solution at room temperature of anywhere from 5 to Ioo mg. per sq. cm. per day, the corrosion rate of high.purity magnesium is 0.15 ± 0.05 mg, per sq. cm. per day. The principle followed in the experiments was to add to such base magnesium other elements, singly and in inin in controlled and known amounts and to observe the corrosion behavior of the resulting alloy. These experiments show the existence of what may be called tolerance limits" of magnesium and some of its alloys for certain impurities. The extremely small percentages of impurities involved and the sharpness of the corrosion discontinuities appear to be quite unpredictable, In order to carry on this work, it was necessary to develop an analysis technique suitable to the problem. In some cases it was necessary quantitatively to analyze impurities to less than 0,001 per cent. The experimental data to be presented are based on observation of about 5000 alloy specimens and on more than 50,000 quantitative analyses. while the primary purpose of this paper is to present the experimentally obtained data on corrosion rates as a function of composition, and particularly to demon-

THOUGH the Geophysics Commit- tee limited itself to two sessions this year, both of them marked by a high percentage of absentee authors, even this situation failed to dampen the and or of the ebullient geophysicists, who bandied no small amount of good- humoredlv barbed discussion. Hans Lundherg offered some constructive criticism of last year's report by the Geophysics Education Commit- tee, making a plea for more training in field techniques and less insistence on rigorous theoretical training. Carl Heiland pointed out the necessity of making geophysics and geology courses more attractive in order to draw more students into these fields. Exception was taken to this line of reasoning by Father Macelwane and Sherwin F. Kelly who emphasized the necessity for sound basic training if competent geophysicists were to be turned out. This discussion developed apropos of the report of the Geophysics Education Committee, which had been postponed from the Education Division meetings, but was not read as it was available in mimeographed form. In many areas where carbonate rocks form important parts of the stratigraphic sequence, stratigraphers have experienced varying degrees of difficulty in differentiating and correlating limestone and dolomite units in both surface and subsurface work. With early Paleozoic rocks of the Mid-Continent, insoluble residues yield a remarkable amount of strati-graphic data and relatively good correlations may be carried over broad distances.' Unfortunately, neither such information nor electric logs and radioactive logs have been particularly helpful in interpreting the limestone sections of the Permian Basin of West Texas. This is because: (1) the variations in the sections may be very slight; (2) no completely satisfactory method of interpretation has been developed; and (3) the measurements themselves are not sensitive enough for small variations. Also, such logs are influenced by the fluid content. Paleontology and micro-paleontology remain the ultimate arbiters. As a routine tool, however, paleontol-ogical examination is slow and tedious. Chemical analysis may be used, but this, too, is extremely slow. Although rocks are not classified according to chemical composition, there is considerable variation with rock types. Correlation by chemical composition has two advantages, first, the characteristics determined are subject to minimum human error and interpretation, and secondly, the lithologic changes are not masked by fluid content as in the case of electric and radioactive logs. Some fossils concentrate certain elements which tentatively might be used to date rock units.' Rapid chemical analysis by spec-trographic means could be used as an adjunct to other means employed in correlation work, or might, in itself, present a suitable method. PURPOSE OF THIS INVESTIGATION Sloss and Cooke' have published data concerning spectrographic analysis of limestone rocks specifically for purposes of direct correlation of a single formation. These authors found satisfactory evidence that differences in percentage of four elements (Mg, Fe, Al, and Sr) in the Mississippian limestones of northern Montana were useful in carrying out correlation of this formation over a distance of approximately 50 miles. It was concluded from the preliminary work that the spectrochemical method offered possibilities of solution of some problems of correlation heretofore not possible. Since the work of Sloss and Cooke' was confined to one particular limestone zone, extension of the use of the method to examine two or more geologic formations would aid materially in the over-all problem of correlation of such rocks. Equipment is now available commercially with which very rapid spectrographic analyses may be made, and hence the problem was to determine whether the variations existing in the minor constituents of limestones were sufficient for use in possible correlation. Qualitative and semi-quantitative investigations were made to determine whether significant changes in the chemical condition occurred. It was a further purpose to investigate the geologic time-boundaries to see whether significant chemical variation could be found corresponding to the paleontological breaks. It was desirable to attempt correlation of a thick section of limestone or dolomite rock and to have as much information as possible on the section. Furthermore, it was felt that examination of formations more difficult to correlate by other means would enhance the value of the method should definite points of correlation be found. Samples were chosen from the Chapman-McFarlin Cogdell No. 25 well in the Cogdell field, Kent County, Tex., and from the General Crude Oil Co., Coleman No. 193-2 well in the Salt Creek field, Kent County, Tex. These fields belong to the famous series of "Canyon" reef fields of West Texas. Cores from the above wells were available from the United States Geological Survey, Austin, Tex. THE SPECTROGRAPHIC METHOD The choice of procedure to be followed in this investigation was based on the anticipated requirements peculiar to the problem. Since the problem was primarily to investigate the possibilities of applying the spec-trograph to problems of correlation in thick carbonate sections, a precise quantitative analysis did not appear necessary. A qualitative analysis to show the possible absence of presence of any element, or a semi-quantitative analysis of the elements present to show the relative changes in magnitude of selected elements was required. Both types of analysis were employed. The two most widely applied methods of semi-quantitative estimates are those of Harvey and of Slavin4,5 though various other procedures have been described.6 while the Harvey method has been modified by Addink,7 this refinement did not seem necessary to the present problem. Essentially, the procedure employed is a variation of the total energy method of Slavin with two exceptions: (1) stressing matrix effect, and (2) using densitometer measurements. Swelling ground is one of the most feared problems in tunneling. Although usually not causing sudden failures during construction, the very large and longlasting deformations give contractors and designers the impression of facing an inevitable phenomenon against which there is no technical defense. Examples are concrete liners up to 1 m (3 ft) thickness that have been cracked or crushed, tunnel inverts that are heaving at 0.1 m (0.3 ft) per week during construction and continue to heave during decades. This paper summarizes essential components of design construction procedures where tunnels in swelling rock can be built to perform satisfactorily. It is important to point out that design and construction cannot and should not be separated. The way the tunnel will be built has to be an integral part of the design. Swelling can be defined as time dependent volume increase and is distinguished from squeezing, another time dependent phenomenon occurring in tunneling. Squeezing involves exceeding the shearing resistance while swelling usually does not. Swelling of rock masses can occur as swelling of the intact rock, swelling of wall rock, of gouge and of filler in the discontinuities of a rock mass, and as a combination of the above. Swelling mechanisms have been discussed elsewhere (ISRM 1983).

ThE following chronology presents the history of lead-mining in the United States in a brief form and is a useful reference in connection with the statistics of production: 1621.. Lead was mined and smelted near Falling Creek, Va., to supply the local demand for bullets and shot. This was the first mining and .smelting of lead in what is now the United States. 1632. In a report made on the minerals of New England, lead-ore is mentioned. (Bishop, I., 470.) 1650. Supposed beginning of mining by Jesuits in Pima county, Ariz. 1651. Grant of lead-mine at Middletown, Conn., to Gov. John Winthrop. 1682. Lead-ore supposed to have been discovered in Wisconsin by Nicholas Perrot. (K. D. Irving, Mineral Resources of Wisconsin, Trans., viii., 498.) 1700 Discovery of lead in Missouri by Penicaut, one of Le Sueur's party. Tile same expedition discovered lead near the southern boundary of Wisconsin in August of the same year. 1712. Grant by Louis XIV. of the Crozat patents, with special privileges respecting the discovery and operation of mines in the then territory of Louisiana. Little or no mining was done under this patent until about 1720. 1717. Transfer of Crozat patents to the Mississippi Co., promoted by John Law, which prepared for active mining. 1719. The gravimetric-vacuum distillation method was developed to permit rapid and accurate determinations of the oil-water ratios of small samples or sands containing little oil. In addition, the samples usually are so well cleaned and so little altered by the distillation at reduced pressure that rapid estimations of other physical properties may be made with the evacuated cores. Requiring only elementary glass-blowing technique, the distilling tubes and traps used in determining oil-water ratios were easily fashioned from the usual glassware. A sketch and description are given of the necessary apparatus, including the cylindrical electrical heaters. The procedure, requiring about 40 min., consists in raising the temperature and maintaining it between 675' and 725°F. for at least 10 min. while the pressure is held between I and 2 mm. Hg. The fluids condensed in the trap (cooled by a mixture of kerosine and solid carbon dioxide) are separated in a centrifuge and the volume of water is recorded. Determination of changes in weight with an analytical balance of all parts of the apparatus permits computation of weight of oil distilled and total weight of oil recovered. Introduction In determining the oil-water ratios of core samples, distillation at atmospheric pressurel-5 has proved to be sufficiently reliable for samples containing moderate quantities of oil. Since small samples and sands with little oil are encountered, how- ever, it appeared advisable to develop a method that would be applicable under these circumstances. The use of vacuum not only permits as much accuracy as does the gravimetric-extraction process, but it actually allows an increase in speed over the atmospheric-distillation method, because of the time required to cool the metal pots from about 1200°F. between runs. The gravimetric-vacuum distillation method was developed to permit rapid and accurate determinations of the oil-water ratios of small samples or sands containing little oil. In addition, the samples usually are so well cleaned and so little altered by the distillation at reduced pressure that rapid estimations of other physical properties may be made with the evacuated cores. Requiring only elementary glass-blowing technique, the distilling tubes and traps used in determining oil-water ratios were easily fashioned from the usual glassware. A sketch and description are given of the necessary apparatus, including the cylindrical electrical heaters. The procedure, requiring about 40 min., consists in raising the temperature and maintaining it between 675' and 725°F. for at least 10 min. while the pressure is held between I and 2 mm. Hg. The fluids condensed in the trap (cooled by a mixture of kerosine and solid carbon dioxide) are separated in a centrifuge and the volume of water is recorded. Determination of changes in weight with an analytical balance of all parts of the apparatus permits computation of weight of oil distilled and total weight of oil recovered. The recovery of the initial flow stress of poly-crystalline iron is characterized by a) a logarithmic time dependence; b) an increasing activation energy with increasing recovery; c) an increased ?,ate and fraction of recovery with decreased temperature of deformation; and d) an increased rate with increased deformation. Isochro)ml studies of the recovery of single crystals revealed more sluggish recovery. The original flou3 stress of single crystals could be regained by recovery anneals at 800"or 900°C. ThE great majority of the theoretical treatments and experimental studies of strain-hardening have been concerned with the close-packed lattices.' Very little effort has been expended on the bcc structure so that the theory of work-hardening of this lattice is essentially nonexistent. The limited amount of experimental data resulting from the direct studies on silicon-iron,2 low-carbon steel,3 and purified irons4"7 does not as yet permit a detailed analysis of the strain-hardening. Studies concerned with the effects of annealing following deformation have been few in number," have been somewhat limited in extent, and have had the disadvantage of using irons containing a substantial impurity content. The present research was undertaken to augment the limited knowledge we have of the characteristics of a bcc metal as regards strain-hardening and recovery from the strain-hardened state. The recovery of the flow stress has been employed since it was felt that the stress associated with the hardened state gives at least a fair qualitative description of the state of the imperfections causing the hardening. The study was concerned primarily with the recovery of flow stress following strain-hardening of polycrys-talline, zone-melted iron as a function of the amount of deformation, the temperature of deformation, and the time and temperature of the recovery anneal. A limited investigation of the recovery of the initial flow stress of single crystals of this same material as a function of the recovery temperature was also conducted in conjunction with the Lambot X-ray technique." MATERIAL The zone-melted iron used in this investigation was obtained through the courtesy of the American Iron and Steel Institute and Battelle Memorial Institute. The analysis, as given by the supplier indicated a maximum impurity content of 0.02 wt pct excluding those impurities listed in Table I. (The actual impurity content is very probably less than this since detection limits were considered as the amount of a particular impurity level.) The phase boundaries in the ternary system Ti-Cr-Al have been established at 1800° and 1400°F for alloys containing more than 60 pct Ti. The martensite transformation temperature has been measured for the titanium-rich alloys. THE studies of binary alloys of titanium with the transition elements which have been published so far1-0 ndicate clearly that the solubility of these elements is always much greater in the high temperature body-centered cubic form of titanium (ß phase) than in the low temperature hexagonal form. In this category of alloying elements are iron, nickel, chromium, manganese, vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten, columbium, and tantalum. Although studies of the nontransition elements have been rather limited, early work on titanium binary alloys'" has shown that most of them were not very soluble in the a form, with the exception of aluminum, for which the solubility in a is about 25 pct.13, 12 In addition to this large solubility in a, aluminum is also soluble in ß titanium to the extent of about 35 pct and the transformation temperature from ß to a is raised with aluminum content. This effect is also typical of aluminum, in contrast with that found for the transition elements which lower the ß to a transformation temperature. Therefore, it may be anticipated that tprnarv titanium alloys with aluminum and any one of the transition elements will constitute a class of ternary alloys having characteristic features absent in alloys involving two transition elements. Chromium was chosen as a typical transition element for the present study because ternary alloys of Ti-Al-Cr commercially produced have been found to possess very interesting physical properties (MST-3 pct A1-5 pct Cr of Mallory-Sharon).'" Binary Systems The binary systems Ti-A1 and Ti-Cr have been established recently by several investigators. The data used in this investigation were taken from the complete diagram of Bumps, Kessler, and Hansen." This diagram agrees quite well with earlier investigations." For the Ti-Cr system, the phase boundaries at 1800" and 1400°F were taken from refs. 6 and 7. The binary system Cr-A1 has been studied recently by Bradley." This system is rather complex and contains not less than seven intermediate phases. The present study was limited to the titanium corner of the ternary system (less than a total of 40 pct Cr plus Al) and none of the phases present in the Cr-A1 binary alloys were found in the ternary alloys investigated. HAND picking was the earliest form of coal preparation, first practiced to improve the outward appearance of the coal being loaded and to remove any pieces that might appear objectionable to the buyer. It is still extensively practiced on the plus 1-in. sizes and particularly on the plus 4-in. and larger sizes. The percentage of ash reduction that can be obtained by hand picking depends entirely upon the amount of free impurity occurring in the coal. In a particularly dirty seam, where a considerable quantity of rock occurs with the coal as mined, hand picking produces sizable reductions in ash. If the coal is prepared clean at the working face hand picking is a final check; in some cases, on the smaller sizes, it is practiced only to show that an effort is being made to prepare a clean product. Because of the variety and different methods of handling coal, the early plants were not always adapted for e5cient hand picking. At most mines an attempt is made to - remove the visual impurities at one or more of the following places in the surface plant: (1) in the tipple during screening; (2) on picking band, belt, or shaking conveyors; (3) during the loading of the coal as it goes into the railroad car. Whatever the physical arrangements of the plant may be, the usual practice is to run the coal over the screen, picking table or boom at such a rate that each piece of impurity is exposed to the view of the picker. Coal should be uniformly sized and spread out on the table so as not to exceed one particle in depth. The flow should be even in tonnage and the speed of travel should be from 30 to 60 ft. per minute and not exceed 80 ft. per minute. The dirtier the coal, the slower the speed required for a fixed number of pickers. Actually, picking capacity depends on the number of particles per minute that can be picked out and rejected. The percentage of impurity removed is determined by this and the average weight of piece rejected. Handling a mixture of sizes from nut to the largest lump over the same picking table or conveyor is not conducive to efficient separation by hand picking because the lump hides the smaller impurities. Picking tables should not exceed 5 ft. in width, so that a picker on either side will be able to remove impurities from the center of the table. Guards usually are placed at the side of the screen, boom or table, to allow the pickers to stand close enough to remove the impurities without too long a reach.

A FEW years ago somebody connected with one of those self-constituted bodies of unofficial character, like a Chamber of Commerce, Board of Trade, or State Development Board, started a catch-phrase referring to California as " The Land of Sunshine, Fruit, and Flowers," and the railroad magazines and folders keep it steadily in use, working day and night. Yet it altogether ignores the substance which brought the State into the Union, which peopled it, and which made it famous through-out the world. You ladies and gentlemen who have come from what we here call "the East," have in your own States, no matter which one, sunshine, fruit, and flowers. But your Eastern States, having these things as we do, have not the gold that we do. Therefore, the old designation of "The Golden State," applied to California, should be revived, as being the most distinctive term. It is worthy of remembrance, too, that during the dark days of the civil war this State handed over $172,000,000 in yellow gold, and saved the credit of the nation. Gold-mining has been carried on in California since " The days of old, The days of gold, The days of 49," and it still continues. Since that historic year, and up to the end of 1910, the State has produced, in gold alone, $1,530,214,468. Since 1792 the entire United States production of gold has been $8,261,573,500, so that the single State of California has, in that period, produced within $201,144,564 of one-half of all the gold from Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and the Southern and scattering States. In other words, all the other 25 gold-producing States of the United States combined
