WHATEVER the outcome of the Industrial Recovery Act, it has currently injected the first hope and optimism into the coal industry for more than a decade. Compared with the recent drab years the results are impressive: Bituminous production for the first ten weeks, 78,000,000 tons, may be compared with 63,000,000 last year; anthracite, 14,600,000 tons and 9,600,000 tons for the same periods, respectively, bringing the heaviest payrolls in ten years with individual checks reminiscent of former boom times. Hurried calls for long deferred new equipment and replacements have stimulated foundry and machine works and the -invigorating effect on the railroads is indicated by the first actual car shortage in a decade. And even in the welter of confusion over code prices, this heavy tonnage has moved at the most profitable figure the coal man has realized for many years, though with the large volume on old contracts, profits were not as large as many think.\

In the 100' years since AIME was founded in 1871, the Institute has issued a great many publications in a variety of forms: periodicals, Transactions volumes, and special volumes or books. The following is a brief history of AIME publishing with some suggestions for proper referencing. TRANSACTIONS AIME Transactions volumes have been numbered consecutively since No. 1 was issued in 1873, including papers for the period 1871-1873. One or more volumes have been issued each year and may be divided into three general time periods: General Volumes (1873-1927), Volumes classified by subject matter (1928-1949), and the present practice, begun in 1949, of issuing three volumes per year, one each in the fields of mining engineering, metallurgy, and petroleum technology. The broad divisions of subject matter in each of these volumes correspond to the technical areas of the three constituent societies of AIME. AIME's Technical Publications, usually designated by TP number's (until the change in numbering system by the Society of Mining Engineers in 1958), may, with some exceptions, be referenced to an AIME Transactions volume. Reference to a specific volume, rather than paper number, is the preferred reference, since the volumes are the form of publication most commonly available in libraries. In many cases, over the years, the Technical Publications may also have been available in some other form, either as separates or in a periodical. General. Volumes (Vols. 1-78, 1873-1927): Until 1927 all papers eligible for Transactions were published in general volumes with no systematic attempt made to segregate the material on the basis of the technological fields to which the papers related.. One volume per year was issued from 1873 until 1912; from 1912 until 1927 from two to four volumes were issued annually. In addition to the Transactions papers, these volumes carried some of the proceedings of the business meetings of AIMS. Subject Volumes. (Vols. 79-183; 1928-1949): The material for these volumes was segregated according to subject matter, and up. to seven volumes were issued a year. In the latter part of the period, from 1934 on, there was one volume each' year for the Petroleum, Institute of Metals, and Iron and Steel Divisions and-the remaining papers were grouped in various ways and is sued whenever sufficient numbers of papers had accumulated: The subject volumes containing mining engineering papers are listed in Table 1. The volumes for the period, 1936-1949 are included in this Cumulative Index. Each of the Transactions volumes carries on the binding the year of publication; this date does not give an indication of when the papers included were originally presented at meetings. The contents of the volumes usually list the meetings at which. the papers were presented. Not all papers from a given meeting necessarily are in one Transactions volume. Some of the earlier volumes do not have a number on the binding or within the volume. In 1934 numbers" were assigned to all Transactions volumes, commencing with the 1871-1873 volume as No. 1. WHOEVER has occasion to judge tin in its whiteness from the testimony of his eyes alone would surely believe it to be purest silver, or something that comes very near to it in nature. This is even more so when, on handling, it is found to be harder than lead, to which it can be said to have a greater and closer resemblance. But whoever has actual experience with tin knows that none of the other metals is less similar to it than silver. For silver mixes with every metal, as does gold; and they unite together, and the others do likewise; and except for their color they change their natures but little. But this metal tin, wherever it is found, acts like a powerful poison which envenoms and corrupts the others; and it does this not only with large quantities but also with every small amount; indeed just the trace remaining where it has been melted is enough to embrittle silver and gold as well as iron and copper. The greater the quantity of it in these, the greater are its effects. Speculators of natural causes say that this fact arises from its great wateriness, which is very subtle and poorly decocted and almost like that of quicksilver. This wateriness, then, by means of its subtlety which joins itself with metals, imposes itself into that unctuous and viscous material which renders them flexible, and thus deprives them of their toughness

GERMANY'S recent collapse and the occupation by the Allies of the coal fields of the Ruhr, the Saar, Silesia, Poland, and Czechoslovakia have focused attention on the postwar coal problems of Europe. American coal operators are interested deeply in what is happening in Britain, particularly in the discussion of plans to rehabilitate and reorganize the entire British coal mining industry, as such reorganization will probably determine the place Britain will occupy in the European coal markets for the next few decades. The continuing decline of British out-ut per man-shift, particularly during wartime, has resulted in a most serious effort to determine whether this unfortunate trend is due to the physical condition of the coal seams, poor management, poor engineering and planning, inadequate use of power and machinery, or failure of labor to co-operate with management.

THE high corrosion resistance possessed by tin under most circumstances, combined with its generally satisfactory appearance and useful physical properties, has led to many and varied uses for the metal. These uses have been partly limited by the fact that tin is an expensive metal, therefore many applications have been developed in which tin has been employed in combination with lead, either by coating, as in tin-lined collapsible tubes, or by the formation of alloys containing various proportions of tin-rich and lead-rich phases, as terne plate. A detailed knowledge of the corrosion characteristics of the tin-lead couple therefore is of general interest and has become specially important at the present time, when every effort is being made to conserve tin as much as possible. The present study. has been limited to carbonate solutions with a pH range from 8.4 to 11.2 so that the results may be related to earlier work on the corrosion of tin and its alloys.1-3,6 In these papers, the effects of a number of anion and cation additions to these solutions have been observed. APPARATUS AND METHOD The electrodes for the corrosion cell were cut from rolled sheet about 1/16 in. thick. The length of all specimens was held constant at 7 in., while the width was varied from 1/2 to 2 in. These electrodes were fastened to brass electrode supports, which were attached to rubber stoppers fitting into tall-type one-liter Pyrex beakers that contained the electrolyte. The lead electrodes were prepared from Omaha pig* and the tin was rolled from a slab of Chempur.? After cutting to size, the sheets were polished with No. I emery paper and cleaned with carbon tetrachloride. The edges, back and upper parts of the specimen were coated with a synthetic lacquer, which was supplemented with beeswax for the lead electrodes. The binding posts were coated with beeswax after the electrodes had been damped. The pH of the electrolyte was controlled? by adjusting the ratio of carbonate to bicarbonate. Approximately 600 ml. of electrolyte was used in each beaker. The entire assembly was placed in an oil bath thermostatically adjusted to operate at 30°C. ± 0.10. Potentials were measured against a saturated calomel electrode connected. to the cell by an agar-agar salt bridge. IN making a comparison of mine inspection methods in Europe and the United States, it is necessary to have some basis to start from, which makes this subject rather difficult, as such methods are governed largely by the authority given the inspector by the mining laws. In the United States there are 31 coal producing states and territories and 32 different mining laws under which inspectors operate, as one state-Pennsylvania-has both a bituminous and an anthracite code. Some of these codes are distinctly coal mining codes; others are essentially coal mining but apply also to other mines; several codes are sub-divided referring partly to coal mines and partly to other mines, and a few codes are mainly metal mining but apply in part to coal mining. Having all these different codes in the United States and the departments organized in a variety of different ways, there is of necessity a great difference in inspection methods in this country.

AN extended program devoted to the development of a matrix for holding diamonds of a size and. kind not heretofore generally used is being carried on by the Carboloy Company, and this paper describes the part of the development that affects mining and its allied industries. Labora-tory and field work so far has indicated the following: 1. Tungsten carbide and cobalt form the most desirable known matrix material for the holding of diamonds for drilling work. 2. Industrial bort diamonds in sizes and of a class not generally heretofore acceptable and therefore less expensive can be successfully held in this cemented carbide matrix. 3. In exploratory drilling, the combination of bort diamonds, impreg-nated throughout a matrix of tungsten carbide and cobalt, when fabri-cated onto drilling crowns, is an indicated economic substitute for drilling crowns in which the diamonds are set by hand, mechanically or by casting. 4. This impregnated type of drilling crown or bit has definite possi-bilites of revolutionizing the drilling of blast holes, particularly in the harder formations. This will be brought about by the development of high-speed light-weight rotary equipment using an impregnated diamond bit to replace the percussion drill now in general use. (The development of this rotary equipment is well past the laboratory stage at this time.) 5. That the use of a rotary bit is a preventive measure in the fight against silicosis. The development of this product was started by G. F. Taylor at the Research Laboratories of the General Electric Co. It was early recog-nized that it had possibilities in the drilling field and the present product is the result of considerable experimental work with other powdered metals as well as with tungsten carbide and cobalt.

INTRODUCTION The major products of nickel industry in Japan are the electrolytic nickel (E-Ni), the ferro-nickel (Fe-Ni) and the nickel oxide sinter (NOS), totaling in production to 90 - 100 X 103 tons/year in terms of pure nickel content, and sharing approximately 20% for E-Ni, 10% or less for NOS, and the rest for Fe-Ni. The raw materials to be used for these products depend totally upon the imports from abroad; matte, the raw material used in the production of E-Ni, is from Australia and Indonesia; matte for the NOS is from Indonesia and New Caledonia; and garnierite, the raw material for Fe-Ni, is imported in bulk from New Caledonia, Indonesia and the Philippines. This report describes the acquisition of these raw materials, the production processes, trend of supply-demand, problem areas and the measures taken, and so forth, in connection with the nickel industry in Japan. ELECTROLYTIC NICKEL 1. History The nickel industry in Japan began in 1939 by the Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. (SMM) with 150 tons E-Ni/month under the blast furnace smelting and the metal anode electrolysis. This was temporarily suspended after the end of last World War II, but resumed in 1952 with garnierite of New Caledonia as a raw material. Since then, the production capacity has been expanded incidentally to the increase of demand. However, since the smelting of garnierite contained about 2% nickel was very costly, the smelting process had been changed to smelt the briquettes of the mixture of garnierite and nickel sulfide concentrate imported from Canada and Australia. In 1975, this smelter was closed, and SMM's nickel refinery used matte from Western Mining Corp. (WMC) of Australia as a raw material. The refining process had been the metal anode one. The crude nickel oxide derived from roasting the high grade nickel matte had been melted and reduced with coke in the electric furnace and cast into anode. In 1970, a new refinery was constructed to produce 1,000 tons Ni/month under the matte anode process, and further, in 1976, the old refinery was converted into the matte anode process, thus resulting in the total production capacity of 1,690 tons Ni/ month today under the matte anode process. Shimura Kako Co., Ltd. began in 1951 to produce a little of E-Ni, and in 1955, they constructed a shaft furnace smelter with New Caledonian garnierite as a raw material to begin the E-Ni production under the matte anode process. Its monthly production reached 400 tons in 1957, but it discontinued its smeltering in 1963 to convert to the matte import from S. Le Nickel, WMC and INCO. In 1979, it changed the source of matte supply from the above to Soroako of Indonesia, discontinued the E-Ni production in 1979, and arranged for a total toll contract with Sumitomo. Meanwhile, SMM has developed a very distingished process for nickel-cobalt separation and refining by a solvent extraction method from nickel and cobalt mixed sulfide generated as a by-product in the nickel recovering process from laterite under the Nicaro process. Nippon Mining Co., Ltd. (NMC) also developed its own process. The plants under these processes were constructed in 1975, with the monthly production capacity of 230 tons of nickel and 130 tons of cobalt by SMM, and 300 tons of nickel and 110 tons of cobalt by NMC. SMM imports the raw material from the Marinduque Mining and Industrial Corp. of the Philippines, while NMC from Queensland Nickel Pty. Ltd. of Australia. 2. Production Status 2.1 Producers and materials Today, SMM holds the monthly E-Ni production capacity of 1,920 tons, of which 1,690 tons are from the matte anode process, and the remaining 230 tons are from the mixed sulfide as a raw material. NMC also uses the mixed sulfide as a raw material for a production of 300 tons/month. [ ] Most of SMM's raw material, nickel matte, is imported from WMC of Australia, partly using the Soroako matte from Indonesia. An example of material analysis is given in Table 1. Reaching the miner with safety education" is R the ultimate goal, the main objective, of every safety program in the mining industry. If we can get safety education to every worker, and it is properly learned, enforced and obeyed, we should eliminate at least 85% of all potential accidents. We should then have very few accidents as a result of unsafe behavior, which, in turn, would allow us to concentrate most of our future efforts on preventing the types of accidents which are caused by faulty or defective machinery, equipment, tools and materials. An uninformed or uninitiated person would think that it should be a rather simple process to reach the miner with a safety education. Theoretically he would be right because here we get involved in a matter of semantics. When we say "reaching the miner with safety education" we actually mean that this education must also be accepted and learned by the miner; we intend to mean that safety must be observed and followed at all times. But in order to realize our complete meaning of the phrase, we must find the solution for a number of problems and obstacles which are well known to management and safety personnel.

THERE is a considerable tonnage of iron ore in the Menominee Range of Michigan that is unsalable only because it has too large a content of sulphur. Beneficiation of such ore is economically desirable, as a relatively large quantity of finished concentrate would be obtained (deleterious sulphur mineral content being generally less than 5 per cent) and because large blocks of such ore have been developed incidentally during search for low-sulphur ore. Research on the flotation beiieficiation of these high-sulphur ores consisted of: (1) a study of the flotative properties of the principal minerals in a nearly pure state, (2) flotation of synthetic mixtures of these pure minerals and (3) application of this experimental information to samples of the ores. Gypsum in iron ores is extremely deleterious; but when sufficiently free from impurities it is a valuable commodity. In 1934, the United States produced 1,500,000 tons of calcined and uncalcined gypsum valued at $13,700,0001. Of this quantity and value, Michigan produced approximately 19 per cent4. Thus this investigation may also prove to be of interest in connection with the gypsum industry if minerals separation, such as flotation, becomes necessary in the future processing of gypsum. Data on the flotative properties of gypsum would also be of interest to the science of flotation because such information has been extremely limited. The technical literature reveals one reference to the flotation of gypsum, in which was discussed the use of the mineral, with several others, to determine the relation between the floatability of minerals and the pH of the flotation solution2. This investigation necessarily was not comprehensive in regard to gypsum, but it did show that the mineral could be floated with oleic acid under varying pH conditions.

The "(3034) " twin lamellae in magnesium have been reexamined using electron microscope replicas. The double twinning sequence (1011)- (1012) for these lamellae has been reconfirmed. Evidence is presented showing that the irrational habit of these twins is probably the direct result of a need to accommodate the second-order twinning shear. This accommodation vesults in both an external shear in the matrix and an internal shear in the lamella. A model is presented which accounts for the experimental obseruations. HCP metals are generally characterized by strong textures in which the basal planes of the grains tend to be aligned parallel to the rolling direction in sheet or plate and to the axis of wires and rods. Since these directions are normally those in which finished products may be subjected to uniaxial tensile stress, these textures effectively place the crystals of magnesium objects in orientations unfavorable to both basal slip and {1012) twinning, the easily activated deformation systems of this metal. However, when magnesium crystals are deformed near room temperature by a tensile stress nearly parallel to the basal plane, another mode of deformation can occur.',2 This is _a double twin which forms first by twinning on {loll), followed by retwinning on (1012). The resulting twin lamellae are of considerable interest. First, they can be responsible for "brittle fracture''; when a tensile stress axis lies in the basal plane, because the reoriented crystal structure of a lamella is well-aligned for slip while the parent crystal is not. Extensive internal deformation may thus occur while the matrix is still almost undeformed. This deformation can produce a ductile rupture running the length of the twin.3 Complete failure of the specimen may then oc-cure by the spreading of cracks from one twin lamella to another, or by the movement of a crack into a grain boundary and then along grain boundaries. Since the the volume fraction of these doubly twinned elements is normally very small, the fracture may be classed as brittle, although the fracture mechanism is, of itself, essentially ductile. It is quite probable that the ductility transition, normally observed4 in magnesium at or slightly Obove room temperature, is closely associated with these second-order twins. The detailed relationship of these twins to fracture in single crystals will be the topic of another paper. The present paper is concerned with a second important aspect: the irrational habit of these double twins that falls close to {3034), or approximately 7 deg away from the primary (10il) twin habit. The effects of anisotropic or directional permeability on the areal sweep efficiency and the flow capacity are examined. The paper points out the importance of taking directional permeability into consideration in planning a flood. It analyzes the two-dimensional flow pattern associated with the skewed line drive for a unit mobility ratio. The direct and staggered line drives are treated as special cases of the skewed line drive. Analytical expressions are developed for the areal sweep efficiency at breakthrough and the flow capacity. They are related to the spacing between like wells, the distance between a row of injectors and the nearest row of producers, and the degree of skewness of the line drive. The latter quantity is defined such that it is equal to zero for the direct line drive and equals one-half for the staggered line drive. The areal sweep efficiency and the flow capacity depend also on the orientation of the flood pattern with respect to the principal axis of anisotropy. The paper provides a simple method for determining the areal sweep efficiency and the flow capacity for a formation in which the permeability in the bedding plane is anisotropic. INTRODUCTION Directional or anisotropic permeability is manifested by the ability of the formation to conduct fluids more readily along certain preferred directions. This situation occurs in many producing formationsl-4 and is usually attributed to depositional features in which the sand grains are oriented in a preferred direction. In some cases it results from the formation of a major and a minor fracture system. 4 Directional permeability should be taken into account in many phases of the production and exploration activities. Recognizing its existence in the formation of interest and planning accordingly can lead to increased recovery and substantial savings. For instance, the areal sweep efficiency in a water flood depends to a great extent on the orientation of the flood pattern with respect to the principal axis of permeability. Anisotropic5 permeability is specified by the directions of its three principal axes and the permeability along each axis. The principal axes of permeability are mutually perpendicular. This paper deals with the areal sweep efficiency at breakthrough and the flow capacity for formations with aniscltropic permeability. The flood pattern considered consists of alternate rows of injecting and producing wells. The rows of wells are parallel and form a developed, skewed line drive which is illustrated in Fig. 1. The staggered and direct line drives are treated as special cases of the skewed line drive. PRELLMINARY CONSIDERATIONS The formations considered in this paper are assumed to be of uniform thickness and porosity. DURING the fury of the conflict it was believed quite generally that World War II was being fought for and would accomplish a permanent peace. Yet, before the guns were actually stilled on all fronts, the American people realized that the devastated world would continue to be dominated by suspicion and uncertainty. The misunderstandings which rapidly developed indicated that it may prove unwise to rely wholly on mutual international agreements and contracts to avoid war. Before the celebrations of V-Day died down serious thought was being given toward measures for preparedness for the next conflict. Along with a realization of the enormous loss of life caused by the destructive forces of war, the American people came to understand the seriousness of the rapid and unwarranted depletion of our natural resources. During the last half of 1945 the question of stock-piling strategic and critical raw materials for a future national emergency became an intensely live subject.

THE possibility of using reflected X-rays to produce images of crystals was explored by Barrettl who developed simple experimental procedures for X-ray microscopy and who showed by numerous examples the great range of information that could be made available. In his method characteris radiation is used to produce an image of a limited area of the sample on fine-grained film, this image subsequently being enlarged approximately X100. A somewhat different method will be described here;' white radiation from a fine-focus X-ray tube-"' is used to produce an image of a relatively large area of a single-crystal surface. part of the sample; therefore, white radiation is needed. The standard molar free energy of formation of MOO,was determined between 750o to 1050o C in galvanic cell measurements involving the solid electrolyte Zr0.85 Ca0.15 O1.85. Use of the reference electrodes Fe + FexO and Ni + NiO Provided two independent determinations of FoMoo2. The data may be represented by the equation FMoO2 = -137,500 +40.0T(°K) which is in good agreement with previous CO/CO, gas equilibrium measurements of Gleiser and Chipman. The standard molar free energy of formation of molybdenum dioxide has recently been reported over a large range of high temperatures from the calorimetric experiments of King, Weller, and christensen.' Gleiser and chipman2 have also recently determined ?FmoO2 from 926o to 1068oC in CO/CO2 gas equilibrium measurements. Earlier gas equilibrium studies have been made and reviewed by Gokcen.' Over the temperature range studied by Gleiser and Chipman their values for ?FoMoO2 differed from the calorimetric data by about 700 cal. This investigation was undertaken to resolve this difference and thereby establish the two phase mixture of Mo + MOO, as an electrode of well-known oxygen potential for galvanic cell applications at very high temperatures. Data on the flotative properties of gypsum would also be of interest to the science of flotation because such information has been extremely limited. The technical literature reveals one reference to the flotation of gypsum, in which was discussed the use of the mineral, with several others, to determine the relation between the floatability of minerals and the pH of the flotation solution2. This investigation necessarily was not comprehensive in regard to gypsum, but it did show that the mineral could be floated with oleic acid under varying pH conditions.

In a recent series of papers,1-3 it was shown that a variety of apparently different types of macrosegrega-tion result from the same basic mechanism, the inter-dendritic flow of solute rich liquid to feed solidification and thermal contractions. The important parameter governing sign and extent of segregation was shown to be (v.?T)/ where v is interdendritic flow velocity, ?T is temperature gradient, and E is rate of temperature change. It was proposed in one of the previous papers that the "negative cone of segregation" often found at the base of large ingots results from the large value of (v. VT)/E expected to pertain there. The reason why this parameter is expected to be large in that location is the high flow velocity to be expected there, as discussed earlier,' and as shown schematically in Fig. 1. In this note, two experiments are summarized which are intended as laboratory simulations of the inter-dendritic flow behavior sketched in Fig. 1 and, therefore, of the "negative cone of segregation". Experimental procedures employed are as described in the the earlier work.3 Alloy cast was nominally Al-4.5 pct Cu. Fig. 2 shows one of these ingots, a "prism" ingot, 6 cm high by 12 cm wide by 10 cm long, unidirectionally solidified from a water cooled base. In this ingot, in-terdendritic flow velocity increases near the upper portion of the ingot because of the gradually decreasing ingot cross-section. Calculations were presented earlier of the negative segregation to be expected in this type of ingot,' and results presented in Figs. 2 and 3 agree closely with those of earlier calculations. The isothermal kinetics (at 200" to 400°C) of subgrain growth and of softening were studied in a 99.997 pct pure Al crystal rolled to 80 pct RA, under conditions where recrystallization did not take place. It was found that the kinetics of subgrain growth and of softening were similar, and that the correlation between subgrain growth and softening was in first approximation independent of the annealing temperature. It has been shown by Heidenreich' by means of electron transmission microscopy and by Hirsch and Kellar2 by means of an X-ray microbeam technique that the crystals of heavily cold-worked polycrystalline aluminum consist of subgrains of approximately 2µ diam, which are slightly disoriented with respect to each other. This substructure is found on cold working at room temperature, without annealing. A preliminary study has been previously published3 of the softening upon annealing at 350°C of a heavily cold-rolled aluminum single crystal. Softening and X-ray line sharpening for such a rolled aluminum crystal were later studied in more detail as a function of annealing time and temperature.4 Perryman5, 6 has studied the recovery of polycrystalline aluminum after cold rolling. By means of phase contrast microscopy he found that the subgrain size increases with the annealing temperature but does not alter very much with annealing time at a given temperature. In the present work further study was made of softening as a function of annealing time and temperature and subgrain sizes were determined by two different techniques in an attempt to find any correlation that may exist between softening and subgrain growth. Exploration was active in East and East Central Texas during 1944. Ten oil fields were discovered during the year, of which four show promise of development. The discovery wells of the Sand Flat and Tyler, South fields were drilled to a depth greater than 10,000 ft., and the latter field now produces from the Pettit at a depth of 9890 ft. The Sand Flat well was plugged back to the Paluxy. The other two fields are Glen Rose producers near 8000 ft. The Pickton field produces from the Bacon Lime and Winnsboro from the Rodessa section. The Eylau field, Bowie County, was significant as the first Smackover production in Texas. Magnolia drilled a test in the Concord field, which topped salt. The most extensive and significant development in the district was the Carthage gas-condensate field. It expanded from the 8000 acres of last year to an estimated 190,000 acres, or about 300 sq. miles, and is not defined as yet. The first oil production in the Carthage area was made from the Travis Peak in 1944 in the Rogers Lacy's Cameron Lumber Company well No. I, on the northwestern side of the field. The New Hope field, Franklin County, scored the largest number of completions during 1944 with 24, bringing its total number of wells to 27. Two more pays were opened and produced as dual completions with the older horizons. The Manziel field, Wood County, had 19 new wells added during the year, for a total of 29, while the Pittsburgh field, Camp County, reached a total of 23 wells by completing 14 new ones. Material shortages and drilling restrictions dropped the total number of producing wells completed in the district from 171 during 1943 to 141 for 1944. Abandonments increased from 531 during 1943 to 609 for 1944. Of this number, 479 were in the East Texas field. Subsidy payments had very little effect in the district and it was mostly a few of the old fault-line fields that had any wells to fall within the requirements for subsidy payments. The prices of crude oil remained constant in the district except for increases as a result of subsidy payments. Production and Probation Wartime demands called for increased allowables for many fields, consequently the condensate and oil production for 1944 increased to 190,016,180, which is up 6.9 per cent over 1943. The East Texas field, of course, remained the principal producer of the district, accounting for 134,768'499 bbl. during the year, or 71 per cent of the district total production of condensate and oil. The field topped its own 1943 production by 4.8 per cent and became the first field in the world to produce 2 billion barrels of oil. The Hawkins field remained the second largest oil producer in the district, with 13,317,088 bbl. for the year, a drop of 6.8 per cent from 1943, while Van field was third with 11,635,708 bbl. The
