TO recover the remaining ore tonnages along the south side of the Inspiration orebody, the company began open-pit operations in early 1948 in addition to underground mining. Due to the differences in elevation between the orebody and the existing ore handling and treating plants, the truck haulage operation is up hill. Road grades were established at 7 pct maximum.

The conversion plant of the Clirnax Molybdenum Co. is at Langeloth, Washington . County, Pennsylvania, approximately 30 miles west of Pittsburgh. The molybdenite concentrates converted originate in the company's mine and mill at Climax, Co1orado.l They are delivered to the Langeloth plant by rail packed in 175-lb. bags. War production of concentrates at the mill started in 1918 but it was not until about 1920 that any peacetime uses of the metal began to develop. Early conversion of Climax concentrates was mainly into ferromolybden um, produced for the company by a custom smelter. Chronology of Plant Development In 1924 a small hand-rabbled roaster was built at Langeloth, the roasted concentrates being used principally in the production of calcium molybdate by a conventional wet method. The size of the original plant is indicated by the fact that during 1925 about 400,000 lb. of molybdenum was converted. In 1925-1926, a multiple-hearth roaster was erected (12-ft. 0.d. 8-hearth Nichols-Herreshoff); also the first experimental ferromolybdenum was produced at Langeloth. At this time sa.1cium molybdate was produced in the furnace by a process to be described. With continued interest in and increased use of molybdenum, it was necessary to arrange for enlargement of plant facilities. Although only one 12-hearth 16-ft. 0.d. roaster was erected at this time (1929), plans were prepared for a duplicate unit, which was completed in 193 5, giving a potential roasting capacity of some 16,000 lb. Mo per day under the then prevailing roasting practice. Shortly after this second unit had gone into production, increased demand overtaxed the plant, and as a result two 12-hearth 18-ft. 0.d. roasters were placed in operation in 1936 and 1937. This gave the plant a potential roasting capacity of 40,000 to 50,000 lb. Mo per day, and necessitated major changes in auxiliary handling equipment as well as improved facilities for producing ferromolybdenum. Following the introduction (1938) of a new product—molybdic oxide briquets— and because of the constantly growing demand for molybdenum, plant facilities were again enlarged in 1940 and 1941 by the erection of two 16-hearth 18-ft. 0.d. roasters. These two new units, along with a change in roasting practice, brought the potential roasting capacity to 150,ooo to 190,000 Ib. Mo per day, based on about 15 lb. per sq. ft. of hearth area. Other departments of the plant have necessarily grown, until today the plant is modern throughout and completely mechanized, with equipment geared to produce marketable products as follows:

PART of a program of research on the Ti-A1 system1 involved a study of the lattice parameters of the titanium-rich a solid solution, which has a hexagonal close-packed structure. For this work, a 14 cm Debye-Scherrer powder camera and filtered CuK, radiation was used. For each pattern, the parameters were calculated by a least squares solution of the five strongest high angle lines. This provides an accuracy of i0.005A or better. The results are shown graphically in Fig. 1. It will be seen that an unusual change of slope occurs in the curve for the C parameter at high aluminum contents. Such anomalous changes in slope have been recorded by RaynorV or several magnesium-rich solid solutions. The effects were interpreted in terms of a special contribution to the lattice distortion due to factors of electronic origin predicted by Jones." Jones' theory, in substance, suggested that an unusually large expansion of the lattice would begin when the electron per atom concentration in the alloy was increased to a value at which an overlap just began from one Brillouin zone to another. CIVILIZATION'S PROGRESS, which has multiplied man's comforts, conveniences, a n d happiness, is based upon the extensive employment of natural minerals and sources of energy. Mineral resources are basic factors in modern economic development, machine industry, international trade and world power. A survey of mineral consumption shows that the United States leads the world in the production and consumption of energy materials, of metals, and of the large and diverse array of earth materials that fall in the nonmetallic mineral group. The use of nonrnetallic minerals exceeded both the metals and the fuels in the long period before the industrial age, but it is only in the last two decades that consumption of non- metals has kept pace with and approximated in value the output of metals. Although the data of production in the first half of the last century are meager and fragmentary, the record of the past fifty years-the period of most rapid growth-is available, and reveals an astounding growth.

AT the present time, there appear to be two conflicting opinions on the solubility of boron in titanium. P. Ehrlich' has indicated from X-ray diffraction work that boron is soluble in titanium up to TiB0.8 (17.8 wt pct, 44 atomic pct). The X-ray diffraction pattern for titanium was found in compositions up to TiB0.05_0.07 (1.1 to 1.6 wt pct); then, without a phase gap, superlattice lines appeared up to TiB0.8 On the other hand, Craighead, Simmons, and Eastwood' have estimated the solubility of boron in both alpha and beta titanium to be less than 0.1 wt pct, based on results of metallographic analysis. In some recent work done at Battelle, results were obtained which shed more light on the titanium-rich end of the titanium-boron system. Iodide-type titanium and high-purity crystalline boron were used in this investigation. The boron was prepared by hydrogen reduction of boron tri-bromide and deposition on a hot tungsten wire. The alloys were prepared by arc melting in an argon atmosphere of 10 cm Hg pressure on a water-cooled copper hearth. The ingots were hot rolled to strip at 850°C. Alloys containing up to 1 pct B could be hot rolled. Those containing 2 pct or more B could not be hot rolled. Metallographically, it was found that a second phase was present in alloys containing as little as 0.4 pct B, and that the quantity of second phase increased with increasing boron content. This is illustrated in Figs. la and lb, which show the microstructures of a Ti-0.4B and a Ti-1B alloy annealed in argon at 850°C. X-ray diffraction patterns of alloys containing 1 and 5 pct B revealed the presence of extra lines which correspond to the superlattice lines reported by Ehrlich.' However, no evidence was found of a shift in the lattice constants of alpha titanium indicating that there is very little, if any, solubility of boron in alpha titanium. This fact, coupled with the fact that the alloys were definitely two-phase, indicates that the extra lines are not superlattice lines, but are more probably the result of a second phase of a hexagonal structure almost identical in cell

A LITERATURE survey of the In-Sb system, which was made before a study of the binary diagram was undertaken, revealed that the intermediate phase InSb existed and that its crystal structure is face-centered cubic of the zinc blend type. In 1929 Goldschmidt' determined the lattice constant for InSb and obtained a value of 6.452A. A more recent value, 6.461A was reported by Iandelli2 in 1941. The purity of the indium used was not very high, however. The indium used by Iandelli contained 2 pct Ge. In view of this fact it was decided to remeasure the lattice parameter using high-purity indium (99.97+ pct In) and spectrographically standardized antimony of the highest purity available (99.91 pct Sb). Specimens corresponding to the InSb composition were made by carefully weighing the ingredients on an analytical balance and heating them in vacuo in a quartz tube at 700°C. As melting losses were negligible, the alloys were not analyzed chemically, but the intended analysis was taken as being accu- rate. Powder samples were prepared by either filing or crushing of the brittle alloy, followed by screening at 325 mesh. The powders were then annealed at 400°C in evacuated capsules for about an hour. X-ray photograms were taken with a Debye and a back-reflection focusing camera, using characteristic cobalt K. radiation. Lattice parameters were calculated by Cohen's³ method. The results of a Debye pattern and of a back-reflection pattern at 25°C are given in Tables I and 11. The lattice parameter at 25 °C is 6.47602A.

ENGINEERS have long pondered the answer to the question of "How am I doing?" and in large measure the answer from the economics angle is provided by the 1946 survey of the engineering profession now being published by the Engineers Joint Council as an eighty-page bulletin entitled "The Engineering Profession in Transition." The survey, based upon a completely precoded mail questionnaire, aimed at three major objectives: (1) to determine the general impact of World War II upon the profession in the period 1939 through 1946; (2) to obtain re- R liable data from which valid findings could be derived to predict how active the profession would be after 1946; and (3) to determine if the war's upheaval had changed materially the pattern of professional activities, education, background, and earnings from those which existed prior to 1939. Abundant data on the economic status of the engineer based upon years of experience in his particular field, the specific branch of the industry in which he served, and his educational background are presented. The concept of using a phase that is liquid at service temperatures as a component of coatings for refractory metals has been described. The liquid, an alloy of gold and silicon, is retained on a molybdemum surface by a capillary system made of molybdenum disilicide. The coating has the advantage of good thermal shock and has a self-henling chracteristic. In order for highly stressed structures to exceed a service temperature of 2000°F, it has become apparent that a development that does not depend on the traditional iron, cobalt, or nickel-base alloy is needed. Alloys of the refractory metals, i.e., molybdenum, tungsten, tantalum. niobium (colum-bium), and rhenium are potentially useful at extremely high temperatures that more conventional alloys would never be expected to achieve. A new alloy of molybdenum has become available that has a 100-hr rupture strength of 35,000 psi at 2200°F.1 As a result of this work, it may be assumed that a material with adequate mechanical properties at 2200?F is now available. Unfortunately, this alloy and all other known alloys of the refractory metals suffer from not being; serviceable in an oxidizing atmosphere for a very long time. In order to permit general use of refractory metals at high temperatures, it is necessary to prevent destructive oxidation by appropriate alloying or by protective coatings. The liquid phase coating reported here is representative of a concept for the protection of metals that permits higher service temperatures and introduces a new group of materials for selection as coatings. Coating Requirements—Service conditions that represent potential applications for refractory metals vary considerably: however, it is possible to consider two conditions that are usually present. The refractory metal1 component must be heated to the service temperature at least once and usually frequently. When a solid coating is used, usually the coating and basis metal do not have the same coefficient of expansion. This difference causes thermal stress in the coating that is aggravated by rapid heating and cooling and eventually causes coating failure. The second consideration is the probability that there will be damage to the coating by some environmental condition. In jet engines, for example, it is expected that large particles, stones, metal parts, and so forth, will strike a bucket at high speed and cut a hole in the coating. In addition to the above considerations, the coating must also have other fundamental properties. Obviously, it must be oxidation resistant. In addi- tion, it must prevent permeation of oxygen and subsequent oxidation of the basis metal at the interface. Also, diffusion of the basis metal to the outside surface and subsequent oxidation there must be prevented. Finally, the coating must not react with the basis metal to form a weak bond at the interface. It should be noted that the coating need not support a load: it must only remain intact. Liquid Phase Coating Design Factors—In the use of a liquid as a principal coating constituent, it would be expected that the two service conditions mentioned above would be satisfied. A liquid would flow under the influence of the thermal strain developed by coating-basis metal expansion mismatch such that failure from this source would not be expected to occur. It is also probable that the ability of a liquid to flow would provide a self-healing effect. Thus, damage caused by particles in the atmosphere would be repaired. A third advantage is evident in that vapor pressure rather than melting point limits the service temperature. This latter advantage permits use of low melting but oxidation resistant metals such as gold or copper that would be quite useless if the solid state was required. A low viscosity liquid alone. however, is a totally unsuitable coating because it will simply flow off a component, particularly under the influence of a high acceleration field. A method of preventing liquid loss must be devised. In this case, it is desired that the liquid have a low viscosity so that it may easily flow into flaws; thus, raising the viscosity is not a satisfactory solution. One other inherent difficulty is caused by the high mobility of atoms in the liquid state as compared to the solid state. Because of this mobility, it would be expected that gases would diffuse more rapidly through a liquid. It is also probable that the solubility of oxygen in the liquid would be comparatively high. These factors would tend toward rapid permeation of oxygen and oxidation of the substrate. It is most reasonable that this problem could be solved by incorporating a solid phase, which is impermeable to gases, as a component of the coating. To overcome the tendency of a liquid to flow easily, it is possible to use surface tension to advantage. If the surface were made up of a large number of capillary tubes of sufficiently small diameter, then surface tension would hold the liquid even against the acceleration of a centrifugal field.

In general, during all electrowinning processes, large volumes of gas are liberated at the cathodes of the electrolytic cells. Most of this gas escapes from the electrolyte, but much of it may be absorbed or entrapped in the metal being plated. In many cases, this is not objectionable, but since it is liberated when the metal is heated, it is a potential source of trouble where the metal has to be heated or melted. Since this gas is principally hydrogen, in escaping from a melt it may cause minor explosions and scattering of the molten metal, while in other cases it has been reported to make the metal rise in the molds when cast. Therefore such metals would be more generally useful if all or most of the gas were removed before they were used. In an earlier investigation1 the gas content of electrolytic manganese was determined and methods found for removing most of it without detrimentally affecting the properties of the metal. In this paper results of a similar investigation on electrolytic chromium are presented. Apparatus The apparatus used in these investigations is essentially the same as that used in the manganese work1 and is shown in Fig I. It consists of sample chamber A, vacuum or pressure gauge B, volume gauge C, vacuum pump D, hydrogen container E, auxiliary gas chamber F, and furnace G. The pressure in the system is measured by the mercury manometer B. Changes in gas volume are measured by volume gauge C which is essentially another mercury manometer in which the volume of the mercury column is large and can be varied by raising or lowering the well H. In this apparatus the tube had a volume of 100 cc for a 60 cm length. Larger changes in gas volume can be accommodated by auxiliary containers attached to the system at F. The sample is heated by furnace G, the temperature of which is regulated within 5°C by an automatic controller. The only change in the apparatus was the sample container which was made smaller because of the chromium metal's containing more gas than the manganese metal and a smaller sample was used. Method The measurements were made as follows: The complete system when cold was evacuated and refilled with H2 until all the air was removed. It was then refilled with H2 to the desired pressure, as indicated on manometer B. The temperature was then raised to the desired value and as gas was either liberated from or absorbed by the sample, the height of well H was changed to alter the volume of the system so as to keep the pressure constant. In determining rates of liberation of gas, volume readings were taken at convenient tirne intervals depending on the rapidity with which the gas was liberated. INTRODUCTION The Department of Energy is cooperating with Snowmass Coal Company near Carbondale, Colorado to introduce the longwall mining method in moderate to steeply pitching coal seams in the United States. This venture is part of a coal mining research program directed toward development, trial, and analysis of mining technique8 to improve production and recovery in the more difficult mining conditions such as thick, multiple, and steeply pitchly seams found in the Western U.S. The project at Snowmass is the first attempt in the United States to operate a longwall in a steep coal seam. Plans are to mine three adjacent, successively downslope panels in the eight foot thick seam which varies in pitch from 27 to 33 degrees. During this work, researchers and mine engineers are expected to obtain answers to many engineering questions relative to panel design and development, selection of face equipment and beet operating techniques and procedures. They are also committed to obtaining hard data on costs, recovery, production, safety, and behavior of underground mine structure as the three panels are mined. This information is essential to future mine engineering and profitable mining of pitching Western coal reserves. Development of the first trial panel was begun in 1979 and completed in June 1981. The longwall mining equipment was then installed in the starting room and retreat mining begun on August 11, 1981. Project duration is expected to be about five years during which over tm million tons of coal will be produced. TRAINING The longwall mining method is new to Snowmass. For years the mine produced coal by room and pillar methods using conventional techniques to mine upslope rooms and Alpine F6A miners to cut entries and rooms on strike. Miners were experienced in room and - pillar mining from other mines. News of the longwall demonstration was received enthusiastically by Snowmass miners. Employee interest in the project was 100%. However, there was minimal longwall experience on site. In fact, most of the work force had not even seen a longwall. Mine and company management were well aware of the immediate need to develop trained longwall face mining crews and maintenance people qualified to work on longwall equipment and also expertise in longwall planning, equipment selection, power distribution design, ventilation requirements and panel development. The first approach to answer this huge deficiency in longwall mining experience was obviously training. Hence a training program directed toward those mining specifics most urgent to the beginning mining phases was initiated in mid-1980. Classroom lectures and hands on training, using instructors from equipment suppliers and available company longwall expertise, was conducted in longwall subjects to include face mining procedures, panel development, operation of equipment, equipment assembly and maintenance, electrical circuitry and controls, ventilation, move of longwall equipment, and safety procedures. At the same time, responsible engineers and foremen were sent on a tour of European pitching longwalls to see first hand how other mines working under similar seam conditions conducted their operations. Development techniques, types of equipment, methods for transport of men and materials, and ground control techniques were discussed with engineers, foremen and officials at each mine. This look at European longwall mining operations gave Snowmass good insight into the unique problems associated with longwall mining on 30' pitch. Mining considerations such as face conveyor/ support system slippage downslope, panel development, maintenance, safety considerations, manpower requirements, and haulage methods were covered with European experts

IN 1937 the employees of the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd., at Timmins, Ont., Canada, approached organized medicine for a plan to provide themselves and their families with a complete medical service including hospitalization. This approach was made because of two conditions: (1) the necessity for some organization whereby contributions could be made in instalments to offset the sudden and large expense connected with illness for which the average employee is not prepared, and (2) the need for a more cohesive quality of service to replace a contract practice then in vogue, which did not take care of the employee's family or dependents. In different parts of the United States and Canada similar plans were in force, not only for employed groups but for numbers of people in circumscribed areas. In Europe different countries had adopted various forms of health insurance plans. It then was no surprise that these employees as a group should ask for some similar plan. With the cooperation of the management, a plan was instituted. The plan has one object only-the provision of medical services, including the accessory services such as hospitalization, X-rays, nursing, and necessary drugs and medicines. It is not concerned with cash benefits, sickness and accident payments, or any form of monetary return as the result of illness, but is simply an organization to provide medical services and pay for them from a central fund. It is a nonprofit organization and the only shareholders are the employees and their families who contribute and who in turn receive services. The Hollinger plan is limited to the employees of the Hollinger mine, who live in Timmins and the immediate vicinity. At first, the membership was voluntary. In the third year, it was made a condition of employment, with the proviso that at the end of any Association financial year an employee may withdraw if he wishes to do so. After withdrawal, he cannot again become a member until the end of the next Association year, and then only by the payment of the back dues. This step was taken to ensure continuity, and to prevent employees from withdrawing when well and reentering when faced with impending illness or operations. The employee himself is subject to medical examination on application for employment, and if accepted is subject to further examination by a specialist in chest diseases under the Workmen's Compensation Board of Ontario. Thus it is possible to exclude those who have heart disease, tuberculosis, or other disabling conditions when first employed. Wives and families of employees are not subject to medical examination but other dependents of an employee-mother, father, or other relative-who are declared by the employee to be wholly dependent upon him must be examined. The flooding process was originally the result of accidents to casing and tubing, but it has gradually passed from an accidental condition to a definite engineering procedure. In spite of the general sheetlike char-acter of the major sand body, the position of shale bands, their thickness, the size of the grain and variations in effective porosity all give the sand different characteristics in different layers and in different places in the same layer. This condition has an important influence on the movement of flood oil and water, and on the yield per acre, as well as a bearing on what shall be considered the best method of handling flood wells. . A valuation takes into consideration six factors: (1) Flooding methods, of which four have been in common use, as follows, in order of effective recovery, (a) circular flood, (b) line flood, (c) five-spot and (d) five-spot with delayed drilling; (2) recovery per acre, which is definitely related to the oil content, the porosity, the method of flooding, the spacing program, and the continuity of the water supply; (3) the rate of production per well per day, which is definitely related to the mcthod of flooding, the oil content and the porosity of the sands; (4) the operating cost of the well, including royalty, overhead, taxes, etc. (Operating costs are usually expressed as unit cost per barrel.); (5) the expected price per barrel. It is safer to use the average price over a number of years than to attempt to forecast future price fluctuations. The discount factor (the sixth factor) used in appraisal of Bradford flood properties should be less than that commonly applied to other properties, because the hazards of operations have been reduced almost to those of a manufacturing industry.

INTRODUCTION. THE Evergreen mine, located at Apex, in the northern part of Gilpin county, Colorado, has opened a very peculiar and interesting copper-deposit, in which both bornite and chalcopyrite occur as rock-minerals. The country-rocks are crystalline schists cut by dikes of granulite and of pegmatite. At the Evergreen property they have been cut by a dike of a new kind of eruptive rock, to which I have given the name " Evergreenite" The rock is composed of quartz, alkali feldspars, orthoclase and albite (often interlocked as microperthite), with augite of the aegirine variety and long needles of enstatite and diallage. For reasons stated below, I believe the dike to be of Tertiary age. It is- easily traced on the surface of the ground, from a point in the bottom of Pine creek, about a mile below Apex,. to the top of Nevada hill, 1,500 ft. beyond and 600 ft. above it. (See Fig. 1.) It varies from 3 to 12 ft in width, and is bounded on both sides by contact-zones about 60 ft. wide, in which the crystalline schists have been changed into pseudo-quartzites or pseudo-gneisses, according to the injection of an excess of quartz or of feldspars through the special layer of the schists.. The most interesting feature is the presence of the pyroxenes, which are always found, though in very variable proportions from place to place, in the layers of these' metamorphosed crystalline schists. The dike has torn from its walls a large number of fragments of the wall-rock. It must have been in a viscous state when that happened, because these fragments of the wall-rock do not show any sign of resorption or of assimilation by the magma. In places they are so distinct and so numerous that the rock looks to the naked eye like a pseudo-breccia, of which, never-

Discussion of the paper of. C. L. DAKE, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 103, July, 1915, pp. 1429 to 1436. A. C. LAWSON, Berkeley, Cal.-It appears that our bog-iron ores are due in a large measure to the activity of certain iron bacteria, and a paper dealing with this subject that makes no reference to that particular agency strikes me as rather curious. C. L. DANE, Rolla, Mo.-Mr. Lawson's criticism that this paper makes no reference to the activity, of iron bacteria is scarcely true. On p. 1430 I stated: "Certain bacteria precipitate iron by building the hydrated oxide into their body cells," and again, "There are many other means by which, under special conditions, iron may be precipitated in nature. Oxidation, evaporation of CO2, and iron bacteria have been held to be the most important." Thus the activity of bacteria receives as extended mention as the action of any other agency in precipitation of iron. The paper makes no pretense of covering exhaustively the origin of bog ores, but, as its original title suggested, refers to Some Principles Controlling the Formation and Distribution of Bog Iron Ores. Mr. Lawson seems to have entirely missed the main thesis of the paper, which attempts to establish some relation between glaciation and abundance of bog ores now forming. Unfortunately, I have no immediate access to the literature of the subject, but my best recollection is that the data regarding iron bacteria throw no light whatever on the cause of bog ores being so much in ore abundant within the limits of the glaciated regions, and being reported much less frequently from the tropics. This lack of data is suggested in the following (p. 1434): "It has already been shown that bacteria aid in the precipitation of iron. Whether tropical conditions increase or decrease the activity of such bacteria is unknown."

The mechanical properties have been determined for a large number of alloy-free martensitic steels with carbon contents ranging from 0.08 to 0.20 pct and with manganese contents of about 0.4 to 0.5 pet. These steels were tested 1) as water-quenched, 2) after quenching, temper rolling, and tinning, and 3) after tempering treatments which involved temperatures from 400o to 1300oF and times from 1 min to 8 hr. The majority of these tests represent steel from commercial-size coils, i.e., strip 32 in. wide, coil weights up to 20,000 16, and steel thicknesses from 0.0055 to 0.024 in. As a result of these treatments, it has been shown that as-quenched low-carbon alloy-free steels can be produced with tensile strengths ranging from 140,000 to 220,000 psi and tensile elongations from 3.0 to 4.0 pet in 2 in. The tensile strength of the as-quenched martensites can be represented by the equation, tensile strength (ksi) = 119 + 560 (wt pet C). The response to tempering of these steels is related to previous work by Muir, Averbach, and Cohen and by Grange and Baughman. Strain aging of low-carbon martensite has also been investigated. If low-carbon steels are defined as those steels with a maximum carbon content of 0.2 pet, it is found that the literature on low-carbon, alloy-free martensites contains little data on the mechanical properties of these steels. However, the following facts concerning low-carbon alloy-free martensites seem firmly established:'-' 1) The major factors in controlling the strength of the martensite appear to be a) fine structure, b) the internal strain resulting from the transformation, and, particularly, c) the amount of carbon in solid solution. 2) In low-carbon steels, the martensite is auto-tempered and is in the form of needles with only minor amounts of internal twinning, whereas the martensite in high-carbon steels forms as plates which are internally twinned on a fine scale. 3) Care must be taken in comparing the results of work that has been done on low-carbon steels with varying amounts of alloying elements to data on plain carbon steels. As has been noted by Irvine, Pickering, and Garstone,6 alloying elements generally lower the martensite start temperature and, thereby, decrease the amount of auto tempering obtained during the quench. A recent study has attempted to identify properties of hard-to-float coal that make them responsive to froth conditioning. Froth conditioning is the process of chemically enhancing the hydrophobic surface character of fine coal particles to improve their recovery by froth flotation. Since its introduction, froth conditioning has enabled recovery of an additional 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st) of coal. This study correlates field results to chemical, physical, and petrographic properties. The most direct correlation relates the coal's oxygen content to its response to froth conditioning. The higher the oxygen content, the greater the benefits of froth conditioning.

I am indebted to The Kaolin Co. of West Cornwall, Conn., and particularly to its engineer, Mr. M. Wanner, for permission to make public, through the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the interesting results of his experiments, having in view the winning of kaolin from deep deposits without shaft-sinking or removing of the overburden. So far as I am aware, nothing like it has been accomplished heretofore, although it reminds one of the methods successfully employed in Louisiana for the winning of sulphur from deep beds by the sinking of pipes one within another, injecting superheated steam under pressure through one pipe, the heat of the steam liquefying the sulphur and the pressure forcing it up through the other pipe to bins at the surface. The kaolin-deposit at West Cornwall is an alteration in situ— that is, it is not sedimentary. A series of clay-veins, dipping about 50" from the vertical, lie between a foot-wall of' limonite and a hanging-wall of gneiss and hornblende schist. The clay-veins alternate with veins or seams of more or less broken quartz, and unaltered feldspar. The deposit, which occurs at a point about 600 ft. above the Housatonic river, was opened five years ago, and about 5,000 tons of a superior grade of washed kaolin have been extracted from open pits, and sold. It soon became evident that this mode of extracting the product would prove unremunerative, by reason of the dip of the vein and the intercalary strata and lenses of quartz, and a more satisfactory method of working the deposit was sought. It is well understood that, in the preparation of all clays for market, especially residuary kaolin, the most important as well as the most difficult step is the washing of the crude product. The application of gas or air under pressure to obtain more oil from a sand which has been practically exhausted by ordinary production methods has been practiced to a limited extent for many years. Until recently such methods were confined to the Eastern fields, principally those of Ohio and West Virginia, where in many cases the production obtained after applying pressure for a few years was nearly equal to the total production prior to that time which had been obtained by the usual production methods. As early as 1917, J. 0. LewisL called attention to this method of increasing the recovery of oil and cited the phenomenal results obtained by H. E. Smith, I. L. Dunn and 0. C. Dunn, who pioneered the application of air or gas pressure recovery methods. With this information available it would appear that other oil-producing sections of the country have been extremely slow to realize the advantages of repressuring. However, after a few successful projects in the Mid-Continent area, the oil producers appreciated t' e value of this method for obtaining further and profitable production from their practically exhausted leases and are now making extensive use of it. In general, it has been the practice to apply pressure to the sands when production has declined to a small yield per well. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the advantages which may be expected from returning gas under pressure to the oil sands during the early stages of development, before the rock pressure has been dissipated and the gas exhausted, and to stimulate discussion of this subject on which comparatively little actual field data are available. The Function of Gas Gas associated with or dissolved in the oil is the source of energy causing movement of the oil to the well. When this energy is dissipated production ceases. IN CONSIDERING the waste in the coal industry, which is the title of this discussion, we must entirely eliminate the anthracite region. The demand for anthracite has been constantly increasing and the mines have been able to run during this last year, while the bituminous field was idle for two-thirds of the time. It is on a 100 per cent. basis, which is the best answer to any waste in industry investigations. The anthracite region is also in a very much better position on account of its control by very large companies which realize that their resources are limited; they must husband these resources in every way and they are making the most careful study of methods of mining and preparation to avoid any possibility of waste. This is well known and realized by the managers of those companies. Even the fine slush which was formerly thrown away is now being stored in the hope that methods will be found by which it can be used economically, either in briquet or pulverized fuel in coking. This has been tried. The anthracite factor may be dismissed from the waste in industry discussion, except as it applies to the general public that burns anthracite; there is a tremen-dous waste of anthracite in the burning of it. Looking at the ash piles where anthracite is burned and seeing the amount of carbon that comes away with the ashes, one realizes that proper efficiency is not obtained in the burning of that coal. Even its higher cost does not seem to bring people to a realization of the necessity of conserving and burning properly the entire coal carbon content of what has cost so large a price. Many people feel that they want to have the coal as large as they can shovel into the furnace; they do not realize that the small coal makes just as many heat units and can be bought at half the price. Consequently, the demand is continually in excess of the probable pro-duction for the larger sizes of anthracite, while the smaller sizes, such as large buckwheat and pea, are a drug on the market and can be bought at nearly half the figure; and yet, if properly burned, these produce just as much heat and can be used with a much greater economy than the large egg and stove.
