Although the liquid-solid cyclone is a relatively recent innovation in the field of coal preparation, various authors have already indicated three distinct applications to operations encountered in the modern tipple. Driessen's articles and work at the Dutch State Mines exhibited its possibilities in the beneficiation of fine coal with apparently high efficiencies down to the 200-mesh fraction. 1 2 3 4 Other publications point out its use as a recoverer, thickener, and preliminary dewatering agent of fine coal which in too many cases is being wasted due largely to former high operating cost limitations 5 6. Finally, certain authors have emphasized the practicability of applying the cyclone to the elimination of coarse and fine solids from water slurries in the tipple in order to produce a water suitable for recycle purposes containing only minute particles far below the 200-mesh size.6 This would result in a closed water system for many cases, with its accompanying economic and operating advantages to locations where water quantity and quality problems are severe; better operation of washing equipment using a consistent water devoid of injurious fine particles; lowered maintenance costs due to the lesser abrasion resulting when the fine abraiding particles are removed; and the greater ease of disposing of refuse streams of reduced volume containing greater percentages of solids.

The difference will appear upon consideration of the accompanying isometric projection, Fig. 1, in which ABCD represents the plane of the inclosing ore-deposit (vein or bed), and AC the axis of the oblique ore-shoot. Results of investigation of corrosion-fatigue of metals at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md., have been discussed by the writer in several recent paper~.1,2,3,4 In those papers references were also given to the work of Haigh in 1917.= Efforts by the writer to obtain a better understanding of some of the factors involved in corrosion-fatigue finally developed into a general investigation of the effect of time and cyclic stress on corrosion of metals. Corrosion-fatigue of Metals As described in the papers mentioned, rotating-cantilever specimens, conically tapered so that the stress is nearly uniform over a length of about 1.5 in., were subjected to simultaneous fatigue and corrosion. For this purpose a stream of water was diagonally applied so as to sweep the specimen from the outer to the inner fillet and surround the stressed surface with water. The fresh water is a calcium carbonate water, the composition of which has been given in a previous paper.2 The salt water is Severn River water having a saline content about one-third that of sea water. The previous papers described results obtained with ferrous and non-ferrous metals. THE rate of the decomposition of austenite in eutectoid steels, forming only pearlite, may be expressed fundamentally in terms of the rate of nucleation and the rate of growth of pearlite nodules. This matter has received much attention in recent years. (The basic references are listed in ref. 1; references of particular import to the present work will be given separately.) Systematic data have been developed for plain carbon eutectoid steels.:! Although the physical factors affecting the rate of nucleation, N, in case of plain carbon steels have presumably been identified, they cannot as yet be evaluated quantitatively.' Several somewhat successful attempts, however, have been made to calculate the rate of growth, G. In the latter case the important factors determining the edgewise growth of pearlite have been assumed to be: 1—the interlamellar spacing; 2—the concentration extremes and concentration contours of carbon in austenite in front of the growing pearlite interface; and 3—the rate of diffusion of carbon in austenite.* The only systematic data on N and G for pearlite in alloy eutectoid steels are those for Co-steels;6 there are no data on alloy eutectoid steels in which the alloying element is known to decrease the rate of formation of pearlite, apart from a few scattering data reported earlier' for steels containing manganese. This paper reports a systematic study of N and G for eutectoid alloy steels containing molybdenum and nickel, respectively. In order to provide information of help in understanding the results, new data are presented on the effect of molybdenum on the interlamellar spacing of pearlite, So; data on the effect of nickel on So have already been published.' The alloys used were in five groups: 1—Pure Fe-C-Mo alloys (Table I) were supplied by the Climax Molybdenum Company of Michigan, Detroit. They were made from Armco ingot iron of standard analysis, Acheson graphite, and ferro-molybdenum, melted in silica-lined crucibles in a high frequency induction furnace. The ferromolyb-denum was added to the melted steel, followed in 5 min by 0.08 pct Al. The ingot as-cast measured 23/4x 31/4x10 in.; it was hot-forged at 1150°C to a bar 1 in. sq.

RECENTLY, an investigation of the absorption of sulfur dioxide gas in molten binary copper alloys was conducted. A Sieverts-type apparatus, consisting of a mercury-filled gas dispensing buret and a mercury manometer, was used initially for determining the volume of gas absorbed as a function of pressure. The equilibration behavior of the alloys studied indicated that the mercury in the gas measuring system was absorbing sulfur dioxide. Owing to the widespread use of mercury as a displacement medium in absorption studies, an investigation was made to determine the nature and magnitude of the mercury - sulfur dioxide absorption effect. The gas measuring system was modified by substituting a Worden Quartz Products Type PDHV fused-quartz-spiral pressure gage for the mercury-filled dispenser and manometer. The dispensed gas volume at known temperature and atmospheric pressure was measured by evacuating a Pyrex vessel of known volume and by admitting sulfur dioxide into the vessel until the attached quartz pressure gage registered atmospheric pressure. Atmospheric pressure was measured concurrently with a separate mercury barometer. The volume of the empty sample chamber and its attendant apparatus was determined by measuring the equilibrium pressure accompanying the addition of a measured volume of sulfur dioxide into the initially evacuated system. The volume of the mercury sample was calculated from the density of mercury at the temperature of the study (25°C). Measured volumes of sulfur dioxide were then dispensed into the system and the equilibrium pressure accompanying each gas addition was determined. From the difference between the system volume and the mercury volume, the number of moles of gaseous sulfur dioxide remaining in the system at each pressure was calculated. The difference between the number of moles of gas dispensed into the system, denoted Enso2: and the number of moles of gas remaining in the system after absorption equilibrium had been attained, denoted nso2(g), was equal to the number of moles of absorbed gas, denoted nSO2. The number of moles of absorbed gas was then converted to absorbed volume, denoted VSo2, in cu cm at stp conditions of (PC and 760 mm Hg. Table I contains calculated values of Snso2, nSo2(g), and VSo2 for different sulfur dioxide pressures. In the original system, denoted Run I, volume limitations of the gas dispensing system prevented absorption studies at equilibrium pressures near atmospheric pressure, so a different gas dispensing system, denoted Run 11, was used for determining the last pressure reading in Table I. The data in Table I are expressed in terms of the absorption of sulfur dioxide in 49.68 cu cm of mercury. In Fig. 1, these data are expressed in terms of the absorption of sulfur dioxide in 100 cu cm of mercury. Since the absorption data plotted in Fig. 1 show a linear relationship, the volume of sulfur dioxide absorbed in mercury is a function of the first power of pressure. The absorption reaction is So2(gas) = SO2 (in Hg) The first-power pressure dependence, coupled with the fact that the sulfur dioxide could be removed from the mercury by applying vacuum, indicated reversible

'T. C. MERRIMAN, New Haven, Conn. (written discussion *).-This most interesting paper gives much carefully obtained and valuable data. However, there are two points in connection with the commercial application of such data that might possibly be a source of trouble and mis-understanding. In the first place, the examination of thin sections of annealed brass, subjected to standard Brinell test.(500 kg. on a 10-mm. diameter ball) at thicknesses from 0.075 to 0.150 in. (1.9 to 3.8 mm.) indicates that cold work has been performed on the specimen during the application of the load sufficient to extend way through the section, and have the hardness of the metal affected by the backing. If the usual steel support is used, this effect is very evident. If a piece of soft brass is used as a support, there is an indentation in the surface of the support accompanied by a bulge on the under side of the tested specimen opposite the impression made by the 10-mm. ball. The result is that Brinell specifications (governmental or otherwise) on stock for a certain purpose may not be fair in all cases, since manufacturers, owing to differences in equipment, etc., may not all use precisely the thickness and conditions of stock on which the Brinell specifications were based. This would mean that the government Brinell specification might not give them the temper of stock best suited for their manufacturing methods. The concluding paragraph of this paper, stating that "the hardness of cartridge brass may be determined with greater accuracy by the Brinell hardness measurement than by attempting to judge it from the grain size" appears to be in line with the movement of the last year or so among brass manufacturers toward substitution of the Brinell test for microscopic examination as an acceptance test on cartridge brass. The statement may he strictly true that the Brinell test is the best test for hardness, but it is not, as the statement might readily be construed, a sufficient test of suitable condition. For instance, some cartridge brass might accidentally have been overheated to a point where it would be distinctly unsafe to use for the manufacture of small arms cases and then be so rolled (reduction 3 to 5 per cent.) as to pass perfectly proper Brinell specifications. Under such conditions the microscope would reveal its unsuitability where the Brinell test had failed so to do.

The annual meeting of the Colorado Section was held on the evening of Jan. 24, at the University Club, Denver, Colo.; SO members and guests were in attendance and the meeting was considered one of the most interesting ever held by the local section. After the usual dinner, the officers whose names are given above were elected for the ensuing year. Dr. David T. Day and Dr. G. H. Clevenger, of the Bureau of . Mines, were present and enlightened us with short talks on oil shales and other work of the Bureau. Mr. J. V. N. Dorr was home from a visit to New York and Washington, and told us something of the war work now going on at our National Capitol. Retiring Chairman Loughridge had been insisting for months that this meeting should be given up chiefly to listening to someone who could give his personal experience in going "over the top" in western France; after a long search he succeeded in finding Sargt. F. C. Strickland, M . M., of the Second Canadian Mounted Rifles, who had very recently been discharged from the hospital with permanent disabilities and has accepted recruiting service rather than a discharge. The success of this plan was evidenced by the close attention accorded the speaker for almost two hours, during which he described conditions, hardships, successes and failures of warfare on the western front. The Telfer Project, Australia's newest, largest, and most remote gold mine treats 480 kt of ore grading 9.33 g/t derived from open pit mining operations. Coarse gold is recovered by gravity concentration with jigs and further upgraded wing a continuous strake launder table, and by amalgamation. Remaining gold is recovered in a cyanide circuit and incorporates flat bottom air agitators, counter current decantation (CCD) and stellar filters for clarification and precipitate removal. Overall recovery into a bullion averages 98%. The mill incorporates a number of design features that allow for maximum efficiency and security wing a minimum number of operation personnel.

Recently published data indicate that the water vapor content of a gas, as determined by dew point measurement, is inaccurate when the gas has been dehydrated with diethylene glycol. Water vapor contents and dew point measurements of gases dehydrated with triethylene glycol have been obtained in this investigation in order to determine the magnitude of a similar error, if one exists. Experimental data show a very low concentration of triethylene glycol vapor in gases dehydrated at atmospheric ternperatures and pressures ranging from 500 to 2,500 psia and that the accuracy of dew point measurements is not impaired by the presence of triethylene glycol vapor. INTRODUCTION Nearly all natural gas transported by pipe line to northern and eastern markets must be dehydrated to a low residual moisture content in order to assure maximum transmission efficiency and continuous delivery under peak load conditions. Without dehydration, water vapor often condenses in pipe lines in quantities sufficient to restrict the flow3 and. under low atmospheric temperature conditions, gas hydrates may form and plug gathering. transmission and distribution facilities. Gas may be dehydrated to pipe line specifications by a number of methods. The most widely used methods are (1) adsorption of water vapor on a solid dessicant such as activated bauxite, alumina or silica gel,' (2) by absorption of water vapor by either diethylene or triethylene glycol-water solutions of high glycol concentration,11,13 and (3) by simultaneous expansion-refrigeration of very high pressure gas in which gas hydrates are purposely formed and then quickly decomposed.'"" Of these three fundamental methods, the adsorption and absorption processes provide the bulk of the dehydrated gas moving to market at the present time. The expansion-refrigeration process. a relatively new development, is gaining in favor because of its simplicity but is sharply limited in its application by available differentials between source and gathering system pressures. Where gas sale or purchase contracts contain a maximum water vapor content specification, the water vapor content is usually determined by measuring the dew point of the gas at system pressure. Knowing he dew point temperature and the system pressure, the water vapor content of the gas is determined from a graphical correlation of saturation, or dew point, temperature us the water vapor content of the gas which is customarily expressed as pounds of water vapor per million cubic feet of gas measured at 14.7 psia and 60°F. Dew points are usually measured with the U. S. Bureau of Mines Dew Point Tester. shown in Fig. 1, which is well suited for use at temperatures lower than 120°F and at pressurei; ranging from atmospheric to 3,000 psi. INTRODUCTION Raising capital in the 1990s is a timely subject. However, many of us thought why should raising capital in the 1990s prove to be unlike it was in the 19805, the 1970s, the 1%0s, or earlier? There are a lot of creative people in banking and in corporate treasury departments. New tools and techniques are continuing to emerge, many of which are discussed in other papers in this book. While we have new financing tools at our disposal, the underlying issue has not changed. Projects and investments must be judged on their own merits. If they cannot be justified by conventional financial analysis, they should not be built. If they can be justified, it is likely that the financing will be available. The challenges faced in raising capital in this decade will persist to the next. The issues of the 1980s -- currency fluctuation, disruptive merger and acquisition activity, commodity price volatility, political risk, and debt crisis -- will all persist in an increasingly international business environment. I will focus on the financing we have just completed for the Escondida Copper Project in Chile. The Escondida financing is structured along the classic project financing model developed in the late 1970s, but it deals with issues of the 1980s and the 1990s. The financing was intriguing, not just because of the technical issues involved, but also the challenge of reaching an agreement in a large and diverse group. Escondida had the one essential feature that made its financing possible. It was commercially very attractive. It would produce at low cost a commodity (copper concentrates) that direct consumers felt would be in tight supply. The project had the direct support not only of its sponsors, but also its customers, and, very importantly, its host government. The non- recourse financing of Escondida would not have been possible without the support of these parties, and without the robust economics that made this effort worthwhile. The issue was more complicated. Operations in all parts of the world entail some political exposure. This project is in Chile, where there was a constitutional requirement that a plebescite be held when the project would be in its early stages. This plebescite would determine the fate of a 15 year old military dictatorship. The project is copper, a commodity generally deemed to be in surplus. Copper has a history of price volatility (whose price has varied from $.58 to $1.53 per pound over the past two years). It is politically sensitive, not only in Chile, but in the United States, Canada and other developed countries. The project is international, with all the problems of dealing with a variety of currencies, a variety of cultures, and a variety of laws and commercial practices. The project is also large and capital intensive, with a total cost of U.S. $1.1 billion. ESCONDIDA PROJECT Escondida, the largest known copper ore body in the world, was discovered in March of 1981, by Utah International in a joint venture with Getty Oil Company. In 1984, both Utah and Getty were involved in ownership changes, Utah being acquired by BHP. A later restructuring of the ownership of Escondida resulted in BHP, as manager, carrying a 60% interest, Rio Tinto-Zinc Corporation (RTZ) 30%, and a consortium of Japanese companies led by Mitsubishi Corporation with 10%. The Japanese consortium is incorporated as JECO (Japan Escondida Corporation). This ownership structure, which spread ownership around the world, was the first tangible step toward managing both the commercial and political risk associated with the project.

9.1-1. Description and Basic Function. A conventional railroad haulage system for a surface mine performs the function of transporting the ore and/or waste out of the pit to a crushing plant or dump. Trains consisting of a locomotive and gondola or side-dump care suitable for loading by power shovels are used. Gondola cars are restricted to hauling ore as a rotary dumper is required to unload them. Side-dump cars are more versa- tile, being satisfactory for carrying both ore and waste; but because of their additional dumping mechanism they are likely to be more expensive to maintain (12). Also they weigh up to two times as much as a flat-bottom car of the same capacity, and, therefore, fewer cars can be hauled per train. Standard-gauge track is most commonly used. Track systems incorporate temporary track of low quality in areas where moves are frequent and permanent track of high quality on main lines. Rail haulage enabled open pit mining to establish its reputation, for efficiency. Prior to World War II it was the principal type of transportation used in large pits. Other successful surface mine haulage methods have been developed since that time. These have served to supplement railroad transportation, permitting selection of a method that is best adapted to the peculiar requirements of each mining project. 9.1-2. General Applicability and Controlling Physical Conditions. For handling rough rock, the shovel-train system is unexcelled (6). The ideal application is in a physically large, but not excessively deep, open pit mine from which the coarsely blasted ore and waste must be transported distances in excess of three miles. If, in addition, a high production rate is to be maintained, railroad haulage will probably afford a lower cost per ton transported than will any other haulage method. Relatively gentle

IN the course of an investigation directed toward expanding ground-water facilities in Essex and Morris counties, New Jersey, the Board of Water Commissioners of the city of East Orange authorized a seismic-refraction survey' for the purpose of de-lineating bedrock topography below unconsolidated overburden. Results of the survey were highly satisfactory and led to the preparation of a comparatively detailed bedrock contour map. Knowledge of the bedrock depth and configuration was an important aid in selection of sites for test drilling. The portion of the East Orange Water Reserve under consideration is in the flood plain of the Pas-saic River about 10 miles west of Newark, N. J. The flood plain is about 175 ft above mean sea level and is bordered by low hills rising to elevations of approximately 250 ft. The bedrock underlying the Water Reserve consists of sandstone and shale of the Triassic Brunswick formation and is covered everywhere by deposits of unconsolidated glacial outwash sand and gravel, lacustrine clay, and recent river silt as much as 150 ft thick. Yield of wells in the sandstone and shale averages 100 to 200 gpm. Since production wells constructed in the sand and gravel aquifer in the buried river valley shown on the contour map (Fig. 1) yield 300 to 1400 gpm, it was proposed to locate additional production wells in this buried valley, where the yields per well would be maximum. In 1939 and 1946 the East Orange Water Dept. had electrical-resistivity surveys made to determine depths to bedrock. From the resistivity data the exploration company prepared a bedrock contour map. A well field expansion program begun in 1955 utilized this information to locate sites for test wells along a predicted northward extension of the buried valley in which existing production wells are located. After several test wells (wells 201-205) had been drilled, it became apparent that the resistivity information was unreliable." For example, test well 201 recorded bedrock at a depth of 72 ft, whereas the resistivity depth determination was 130 ft. As a consequence, the test drilling program was temporarily suspended and a seismic survey was under- taken to determine the topography and extent of the buried valley known from well records to underlie the existing well field. In the first phase of this study, several seismic shot point locations were placed at sites where well logs had been obtained previously. This procedure is necessary in a new area to determine whether the seismic method is applicable and what degree of accuracy is to be expected. At the East Orange Water Reserve, depths obtained from the shot points near test wells 202, 203, and 204 were within 8 to 11 pct of the depths logged (Table I). With this assurance that accurate results could be obtained, additional seismic spreads were located on the Water Reserve. Using a portable refraction seismograph, in the fall of 1955 a crew of four men shot a total of 29 reversed seismic spreads in a period equivalent to six field days. Charges as heavy as 3 1b of 40 pct dynamite were necessary at a few places to overcome ground vibrations caused by traffic on nearby highways. At most other sites, a 1-1b charge was sufficient. Travel-time plots were made for all spreads, and depths and true velocities were calculated according to formulas for multiple sloping layers by Ewing, Woollard, and Vine.' The plot of spread 7 (Fig. 2) is typical of the short spreads in which bedrock was shallow—about 50 ft in this case. Where there were not enough arrivals through the bedrock to define the high velocity bedrock line, the spreads were lengthened. This was done by placing shots on line several hundred feet away from each end of the line of geophones. It was then possible to construct complete reverse plots for both short and extended shot points (see spread 27, Fig. 3). Four individual depths were calculated from each extended spread. Three and in some cases four seismic layers were observed. The surficial layer had a velocity range of 900 to 1200 fps, the lowest velocity recorded. This seismic layer is above the water table and is interpreted as recent river silt. The bedrock had the highest velocities, which ranged from 10,600 to 16,400 fps. ITALY is by- far the poorest in mineral resources of the so-called great pou7ers of Europe. Before the World War this shortage was not so serious as the essential minerals that could not be mined domestically at a profit were bought in the world markets. In those days tourist trade and remittances from Italians abroad helped to provide Italy with foreign exchange. During the World War, when certain mineral products were scarce and when prices rose in some instances to several times normal, the Italian Government began to regulate consumption and imports. It was not until later, when the Fascist regime established the corporate state, that Italy seriously considered adopting a of self-sufficiency. Private industry was grouped under separate corporations, for the principal industries; including mining and metallurgy and the heads of the large producing companies, became members of these corporations. The construction of a model to associate probability of occurrence of some measure of mineral wealth with the geology for each subdivision (cell) of the area is postulated. The questions (1) are the observations made in reconnaissance geology sufficiently related to mineral wealth to distinguish the cells of high value from those of low value, and (2) can this geology be related mathematically to mineral wealth and probability are answered in a case study of 97,000 square miles in Arizona and New Mexico. Measurements on mineral wealth and geologic variables of 243 cells were made. The geologic variables, valued in counts, percentages and lengths, quantified the theoretical concepts of the model. It was found that multiple discriminant analysis and classification analysis by Bayesian statistics and multivariate normal probability function constitute a two-phase probability model that associates probabilities with geologic information and mineral wealth. The cells of explored area must be allotted the value class indicated by their cumulative production and estimate reserves (given well-defined geological relationships in a mineral wealth area), and a discriminant and classification analysis must be performed in which probabilities of the cell belonging to each of the value groups are generated as a function of the geologic variables. This determines whether high value cells can be distinguished from low value cells by their geology as well as indicating those cells misclassified by the model into a higher value group than warranted by their known mineral wealth. The second use of the model is for extrapolation. It is demonstrated how geologic information on an explored area can be utilized in guiding exploration in an unexplored area. Exploration decisions can be predicted on explicitly determined measures of uncertainty (the probabilities). SUMMARY This study postulates the construction of a model to associate probability of occurrence of some measure of mineral wealth with the geology for each subdivision (cell) of the area. The kinetics of green pelletization in a laboratory balling drum have been studied, using pulverized limestone as a model system. The growth characteristics of green pellets were found to be extremely sensitive to the moisture content of the material. Empirical kinetic equations, which incorporate a function of specific surface of the pellets as the criterion for growth potential, have been found to describe growth in a nucleation region and in a ball growth region. The rate constants in the kinetic equations are strongly dependent on the moisture content of the material being pelletized. Size distributions of the balls at different stages of pelletiz-ing are also discussed. In many industrial chemical processes, particulate matter can only be utilized if it is in an agglomerated form, such as pellets. Pelletizing is now widely used in iron ore technology1, and it has also been applied to a number of diverse fields such as the production of cement-kiln feed2, fertilizers3, and fluorspar4. Recently, it has been proposed to pelletize dispersion-type ceramic nuclear fuel elements5. In iron ore technology, for example, the production of agglomerates by pelletizing involves two major steps: 1) the preparation of green balls by rolling particles in a suitable balling device and 2) the firing of the green balls to form compact, strong bodies upon sintering. The critical step in a successful iron ore pelletizing operation is generally considered to be the balling operation1. In this paper, which is not concerned with the sintering of green pellets, the words green pelletizing and balling will be used interchangeably. Green pelletizing, or balling, will be defined as the process of forming larger bodies by rolling fine particles on a surface without the application of direct pressure. Two recent literature surveys6" indicate that in spite of the considerable amount of industrial pelletizing, very little is known about the fundamental principles of balling and its kinetics. The first reported research on the kinetics of pelletizing is the work of Newitt and Conway-Jones8. Using silica sands of different sizes in a batch laboratory balling drum, they found that the average green pellet diameter increased linearly with time at constant drum speed, and qualitatively the growth rate increased with moisture content. Generalized conclusions cannot be drawn from their research since the materials which they pelletized were sand and sand-silt mixtures rather than comminuted materials. Moreover, Newitt and Conway-Jones used testing sieves to estimate the size distribution of the green pellets, and this technique limited the range over which they could study the growth kinetics of the pellets. Bhrany and co-workers9 investigated the kinetics of balling iron ore fines on disk pelletizers ranging in diam from 1 to 18 ft. In their investigation, balling was carried out as a continuous operation, and growth kinetics were studied in terms of retention time of the material on the disk. Although the feed material in their study was quite coarse (the maximum size being about 1/2 in.), they also found qualitative relationships between pellet growth and water content, and feed size. In the present investigation, a number of innovations were introduced that refined the experimental measurements and established the reproducibility of balling experimentation. This enabled extension of the range of measurements to include study of agglomerate nucleation phenomena in the fractional mm size. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the nucleation and growth of green pellets in a laboratory balling drum. MATERIALS AND METHOD Pulverized limestone of specific gravity 2.72 was used as a model system in these studies. It has already been established that the balling characteristics of limestone and silica are similar to those of iron ore concentrates 2,8,10, depending on physical, rather than chemical, properties of the particles. The size distribution of the limestone was determined by a wet-dry sieving technique in the sieve range and by a sedimentation balance in the sub-sieve range. Fig. 1 presents the size distribution of the limestone used in this research. This figure shows that the material is finer than 200p (65 mesh) and that 25% of it is finer than 12.
