Rustenburg Platinum Mines, Ltd. is the largest producer of platinum metals in the western world. It is also the only major platinum producer this side of the Iron Curtain. One of its mines is situated at Rustenburg, 80 miles northwest of Johannesburg. It also has a smaller operation, the Union Section, 60 miles north of the Rustenburg property. Both mines exploit the Merensky Reef, which forms a part of the Transvaal's remarkable Bushveld Igneous Complex, an irregular oval area covering some 15,000 square miles. In order to cope with an increasing world demand for platinum and such platinum-group metals as palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium, Rustenburg Platinum Mines embarked on a major expansion program some time ago. It is expected that production will reach an annual rate of 850,000 oz of platinum by the middle of 1969 and increase to 1 million oz by the middle of 1970. Capital expenditures at Rustenburg during the next few years will be about $60 million. It is believed that the ore at Rustenburg averages about 4.5 oz of precious metals per ton. About 70% of the metal is platinum, some 15% is palladium, and the rest is made up of the other metals in the platinum group.

THE history of the froth flotation of coal is relatively short. The flotation process was applied to fine-coal cleaning about the time of the end of World War I. Coal flotation finds more widespread use in Europe than in the United States and is used on a commercial scale in nearly all major coal-producing countries in the world. In Fig. 1 the general arrangement of a froth-flotation plant at a British colliery is shown. GENERAL FEATIJIEES OF THE PROCESS Application The flotation process is applicable to the cleaning of the fine sizes, particularly minus 48-mesh coal, although it may be used on sizes as coarse as 1/8 in. Since most cleaning processes usually are not effective on sizes smaller than 48-mesh and certainly not effective on minus 100- mesh, the froth-flotation process offers a solution to the problem of cleaning these sizes. This process consists-of agitating the feed pulp with a small amount of reagents, usually 1.0 to 2 ½ lb. per ton of feed in the presence of water and air; the reagents help to form small bubbles that collect on the particles having a greater affinity for the bubble surface than for the water surface, in this case the fine coal, and the bubbles buoy these particles to the surface to form the frothor concentrate. Slate and shale particles remain wetted and suspended in the water to be drawn off as tailing. The frothers commonly used in coal flotation are cresylic acid, pine oil, and alcohols. More expensive frothers, used in ore flotation, work satisfactorily but do not compare with these cheaper reagents for over-all cost. Collectors- used are low-grade petroleum fractions, such as cheap, partly refined fuel oil, or lubricating oil, sometimes mixed with small amounts of kerosene. Y.).-It may be n matter of some interest that sodium cyanide is now being made commercially by melting together in an electric furnace calcium cyanide with a common salt, which produces calcium chloride and sodium cyanide. It seems to me entirely possible that you have here about the same results that would be obtained by melting calcium chloride and ordinary cyanide together, only you obtain it a good deal cheaper. There is no doubt about that reaction once it is being carried on on a large industrial scale for the manufacture of cyanide for other uses. I think probably the same, thing takes place here, with the possible exception of lowering the melting point due to the presence of the calcium chloride.

Now, John, let's pick out a very interesting period when you went to North Labrador and made a preliminary investigation of the big iron deposits there. You were working for either Timmins or Hollinger, which was it? John K. Gustafson: I was in charge at that time of a Hollinger Exploration Co. office in Toronto. We had acquired options on enough shares to control Labrador Mining and Explorations Co., and through Hollinger North Shore Ltd., another company, we had a 3000 square mile concession in Ungava, Quebec, on the direct extension of the iron ore fields.

The property of Pioneer Gold Mines of B.C. Limited is in the Lillooet mining district of British Columbia. It is on Cadwalleder Creek, 54 miles distant by motor road from Shalalth, a station on the Pacific Great Eastern Railway. Interests identified with the present company installed a small amalgamation plant on the property in 1924, consisting of a jaw crusher, Bryan mill and amalgamation plates, in which 75 per cent extraction was made on mill feed averaging 1.0 oz. gold per ton, the tailing being stacked for future treatment. That plant was operated until 1928, when the present company was formed and a 100-ton continuous counter current decantation cyanide plant was built. A second unit, having a nominal capacity of 200 tons daily, was added in 1932 and put into operation during September of that year. When handling ore comparatively free from slow-settling material, the combined capacity of the two units is 400 tons, the original plant now handling about 140 tons maximum. Production to date, from Pioneer, has been about $6,500,000, the present monthly production being better than $250,000 from about 370 tons ore daily, the recovery being 97 per cent. During the fiscal year ending March 31, 1934, a total of 112,936 tons ore and old amalgamation tailing was milled, the mill feed averaging 0.7670 oz. gold and the recovery amounting to 0.7422 oz. gold per ton, or 96.77 per cent. Milling costs, including refining and mint charges, during this period, amounted to $1.45 per ton of ore. Since the building of the first unit of the cyanide plant in 1928, direct cyanidation has been employed, no attempt being made to remove coarse gold from the circuit, other than that cleaned up from the grinding mills during relining and from the classifiers, as occasions permit. In the hope of still further increasing recovery, researches are going forward at this time with the view to removing some of the sulfides after primary grinding, the expectation being that selective treatment of this more refractory portion of the ore may hold economic possibilities.

INTRODUCTION It is my intention in this paper to deal with gold, uranium, diamonds, platinum, manganese, chrome, vanadium and heavy mineral sands. These are the most important strategic minerals produced by the Republic of South Africa which are not covered in other sessions of this program. In each case I have high- lighted the statistics and peculiar advantages which combine to make South Africa a vital source of these minerals. Before proceeding to give individual attention to these minerals I believe it would be useful to define what I mean by 'strategic'. The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines strategic in the context of materials as 'essential for war'. However it is commonly used in a much broader sense than this (often, in fact, very loosely) and I prefer to define it as 'concerned with the acquisition and maintenance of power, whether economic, political or military.' A VITAL SOURCE In dealing with the individual minerals I have quoted statistics which are contained in Tables 1, 2 and 3. Table 1 clearly shows the absolute size of the South African mineral industry. However, it can also be used to demonstrate the importance of the industry to the South African economy if compared with the GNP in 1980 of about R60 billion. Table 4 illustrates clearly how important South Africa is as a supplier of these minerals to most of the important industrialized countries of the Western World. Gold If anyone had any doubts about the inclusion of gold in a list of strategic minerals I am sure that the above definition of 'strategic' will convince them that it certainly belongs there. Similarly no one is likely to have any doubt about the fact that South Africa is a vital source of supply. Tables 2 and 3 show that in 1980 we had 51% of the world's reserves and accounted for 55% of world production. The figures for the Western World are considerably higher. The only other major producer, of course, is Russia, with small but significant production in the Pacific Rim area coming from Australia, Canada, Latin America, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and the U.S. All South African mine gold production is shipped in bullion form containing about 88% gold and 9% silver to the Rand Refinery which is a modern refinery with large scale units capable of refining half a ton of bullion at a time. The Refinery is equipped to produce standard 'good delivery' gold as well as 9999 gold and 999 silver. The Refinery also produces the 22 karat blanks which are, used by the South African Mint to produce Kruger Rands. It goes without saying that the South African gold mining industry leads the world in all aspects of deep-level, narrow-reef mining technology. The industry's metallurgists, too, have a record of tenacious and continuing efforts to improve extraction to the level of the present finely honed efficient process used on all the modern mines. Uranium In 1980 South Africa had 14% of the uranium reserves of the Western World and accounted for 14% of production. In view of the paucity of data I am not in a position to estimate figures for the total world. All the other major sources of uranium in the Western World are situated around the Pacific Rim, with the U.S. and Canada already being major suppliers and accounting for 38% and 17% of Western World production in 1980. Australian production at the time was small but they have very large reserves and production is already rising rapidly. The U.S., Canada and Australia account respectively for 22%, 19% and 29% of the uranium reserves of the Western World. South Africa has been a major producer continuously for 30 years. Nearly all the uranium produced, amounting to about 115 000 tons up to the end of 1981, was a by-product or co-product of gold extraction. During that time the industry has frequently led the world in technological innovation, and has established a reputation as a reliable producer of a consistent, high-grade product. In the latter respect, it is helped by the fact that production is marketed by one company, Nuclear Fuels Corporation, which also blends, dries and calcines the product from the individual mines and samples and assays it before shipping. Diamonds Diamonds are the rock on which the South African mineral industry is founded. The discovery of diamonds in 1866 gave rise to the first major mineral industry in the country and the profits from diamond mining helped to finance the gold mining industry 20 years later. Although now overshadowed by gold, diamonds are still very important in the overall picture of mineral production and exports, as can be seen in Table 1. There are really three separate diamond markets - gem, natural industrial, and synthetic - and, to be meaningful, statistics should be provided separately. Unfortunately separate figures are not available. The figures in Tables 2 and 3 show that, for gem and natural industrial together, South Africa ranks third in the world in production and second in reserves. THE construction industry normally contributes extensively to the general economic welfare of all sections of the country. Billions of dollars are spent for materials and labor, and the success or failure of many business enterprises depends upon the volume of construction. The steel, aluminum, copper, cement, brick and tile, lime, gypsum, stone, sand and gravel, and several of the less prominent mineral industries are vitally concerned. Of great interest, therefore, is the accumulation of needed construction following the relative inactivity of the past five years, the recent moderate revival in building, and the prospect of a broader and more definite upturn. One may judge the magnitude of possible expenditure for construction by what has occurred in the past. The peak years were 1925 to 1928, inclusive, when the annual values of con- tracts awarded amounted to over six billion dollars. In marked contrast was the 1933 total of about 1% billion, the lowest level shown in the Federal Reserve Board Index, which goes back to 1919, and the more favorable 1935 figure of about 1.7 billion. An increase of nearly four billion over the 1935 volume would be necessary to equal the peak year 1928.

A high degree of accuracy is often required in mine-surveying, in order that expensive mining work may not be misdirected. The making of underground connections by drifts or shafts located as the result of surveys presents a crucial test of correctness not usually involved in any other class of surveying. In view of these considerations, the present notes and description of a survey made in June, 1890, for the San Francisco shaft of the New Almaden quicksilver-mines, may be of interest to members of the Institute who are surveyors. The purpose of this survey was to locate on the surface a vertical 2-compartment shaft (3.5 by 7 ft.), to connect with another vertical shaft, of practically the same size, which had been sunk a number of years before from an adit-level about 240 ft. vertically below the surface, to a deeper, so-called 600-ft. level. It will be seen, of course, that the most important matter was to secure an exact coincidence in vertical line, so that the resulting continuous vertical shaft from the surface should have no offset or irregularity at the point of junction between its two parts. The levels were of less importance; but, as the hoisting-works were to be placed in position and the new shaft permanently timbered from the start, its correct alignment was an essential requirement. The important features of the work, therefore, were the methods used in determining with certainty : 1. That the shaft was located in the right place in a general way; 2. That the ordinary inaccuracies of linear and angular measurements were so reduced as to insure correctness of location within certain defined and allowable limits. Instruments.—Thc instruments used were: a Buff and Berger transit-theodolite, with a 6-in. horizontal plate, reading to 10 seconds; a Heller and Brightly Y-level; a Chestermán steel tape, graduated in tenths and hundredths of a foot; and New York leveling-rods, graduated to thousandths of a foot.

The thermodynamic properties of- liquid Mg-Pb allojs have been determined by an isopiestic method from 18 to 42 at. pct Pb and by a thevmodynumic analysis of the phase diagram frofiz 0 to 100 at. pct Pb. In the overlapping composition range the magneszupn activity values derived by the two methods are in excellent agreement, thus mutually supporting the correctness of the Mg-Pb phase diagram previously determined by the authors and of the acticitzes deriz~ed isopiestically. SEVERAL studies have been made of the thermody-namic properties of liquid Mg-Pb alloys. Wagner and Engelhardt,1 Lantratov,2 Knappwost,3 Sryvalin et al.* and Wilson5 used the electromotive-force method, Scheil and Wolf8 and Schmahl and Sieben" applied the transpiration technique, and the present authors8 utilized the phase diagram to determine the activity of magnesium in the Mg-Pb system. The results of these studies are not in very good agreement and could not be incorporated into a general systematic analysis of the thermodynamic properties of the homologous series of the Mg-Group IV B systems Mg-Pb,8 Mg-Sn,° Mg-Ge,10and Mg-Si.11 The thermodynamic properties of the Mg-Pb system were therefore re investigated by an isopiestic technique which has been developed for similar studies in the Mg-SnB and Mg-Ge10 systems- Lead specimens, contained in iron or graphite crucibles, were heated in a temperature gradient in an evacuated and sealed titanium reaction tube and equilibrated with magnesium vapor of known vapor pressure to form alloys of compositions which depended on their temperatures, the temperature of the magnesium vapor source, and the thermodynamic properties of the system. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Magnesium (Dominion Magnesium Ltd., Toronto, Canada) of 99.99+ pct purity and lead (American Smelting and Refining Co.) of 99.999 pct purity were used. In the early experiments, Runs 2 and 3, the alloys were contained in uncovered high-purity iron crucibles. Alloys formed in the uncovered iron crucibles had to be chemically analyzed owing to the slight volatility of lead under the imposed experimental equilibration conditions. The compositions of these alloys were determined by a gravimetric analysis of lead as lead chromate. To avoid this problem, the remaining runs were made in covered graphite crucibles machined from high-density (1.92 g per cu cm) graphite rods (Basic Carbon Corp., Sanborn, N.Y.) which had a maximum ash content of less than 0.04 pct. The non- i reactivity of graphite with lead and magnesium has been previously established,' and the experimental procedure has been described in full detail.' In the runs using covered graphite crucibles it was found that the weight increases of the crucibles and their contents after equilibration equaled the magnesium contents of the alloys within the accuracy of the chemical analysis (i0.3 at. pct Pb). Clearly, the small lid openings of the graphite crucibles prevented significant lead losses during a run, and the weight increase was therefore taken as the magnesium content of the alloys. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS At thermodynamic equilibrium the magnesium partial pressure of the specimens equaled that of the reservoir. Since the magnesium reservoir was always maintained at the temperature minimum of the system, the activity of magnesium of any specimen was given by the ratio of the magnesium reservoir pressure to the vapor pressure of pure magnesium at the specimen temperature. DURING the past 5 years no subject has aroused more interest or received more attention among mill operators than flotation. One reason for this is, undoubtedly, the remarkable success of the process in Australia where that country has risen to the position of furnishing one-fifth of the world's Supply of zinc. The plant of the Butte & Superior Copper Co., designed by James M. Hyde in 1912, was the first important large flotation plant in this country; other installations have been made since then with considerable frequency, particularly so in the last 2 years. Without going into complete detail, it may be safely said that although flotation is a highly successful commercial process, it is more or less on an empirical basis. Upon scanning the literature, it is found that the flotation investigations have, in the main, dealt with a solution of the problems which accrue to practise; until recently no attempt was made to remove the difficulties in the way of the formulation of a consistent and harmonious theory. Of late this phase of the work has been receiving considerable attention, particularly by the United States Bureau of Mines at its Salt Lake City station, by the Mellon Institute at Pittsburgh, by the General Engineering Co. at Salt Lake City, by many of the mining schools, and private individuals almost ad infinitum. There is, at present, an enormous amount of laboratory work being carried on in flotation research, and probably the time is not far away when a generally acceptable explanation of flotation phenomena can be Set forth. However, at this time, it seems as though the current technology is befogged with a super-abundance of contradictory evidence; this confusion can only be dispelled as time proceeds and the knowledge of the subject becomes more complete.

DUE to its location in the Atacama Desert, one of the most barren of the earth's surfaces, Chuquicamata's water supply presents unusual problems. Yearly rain-fall averages less than one tenth of an inch at the plant. However, there are summer showers above 12,000 ft in the Cordillera to the east, the resulting run-off flowing through old river valleys buried beneath more recent volcanic formations, to be impounded within sediment-filled basins. This water emerges at springs where the outlets of these basins are blocked by lava flows, and here are formed the small streams which feed the only important river of the region, the Rio Loa. Chuquicamata's water is obtained from these springs and rivulets. [ ] The map above indicates four pipe lines from which potable and industrial water are supplied. Potable water, amounting to 4500 metric tons per day, is conveyed in the Toconce pipe line from springs 59 miles due east of Chuquicamata. This water is used not only for drinking, but also for boilers and other needs requiring high quality. For industrial water at the oxide plant, there are two 12-in. pipe lines from the Rio San Pedro, carrying a total of 17,000 metric tons per day of slightly brackish water. This water is at present used mainly for leaching and for hygienic purposes. Water Source Found For the present and future needs of the sulphide plant, it was calculated that at least 32,000 metric tons per day of make-up water would be required. For this purpose, a pipe line of 44 miles length was constructed to bring in the entire flow of the Arroyo Salado, one of the eastern tributaries of the Loa. The salt content of this water is so high (over 5000 parts per million of solubles, mostly chlorides) that it is highly detrimental to farming, and the Chilean Government had been studying projects to separate these waters from others of the Loa system in order to improve agricultural conditions in the fertile valley of Calama. So it happened that the Government was willing to award rights to the Arroyo Salado waters under agreement whereby the Mining Company removes waters from the Rio Loa system above Calama for all time. The outlet of these waters, after serving their purpose at the new concentrator and leaving the plant in tailing, is the Salar de Talabre, an old salt lake which presents fully ten square miles of surface to serve as an evaporating pan, the outlets having now been blocked by dams. Here the dry climate of Chuquicamata is a favourable factor, evaporation averaging slightly above 1/4 in. per day. The Toconce and San Pedro pipe lines have been functioning from 26 to 34 years, and through the use of special cleaning tools which were developed at the plant, as well as deaeration of the more active Toconce water, these pipes are now maintained at capacities which do not diminish as years go on. Constructing the Dam The Arroyo Salado pipe line design and construction involved certain special and interesting features, and inasmuch as this line and its intake works are solely for the needs of the new sulphide plant, more detailed description is given. The waters are impounded at a gravity dam constructed of concrete to a height of 100 ft above the river bed, keyed into the precipitous Dacite walls of the narrow canyon (barely 6-ft wide at the bottom, only 25-ft width at 50 ft above). A small secondary dam was built 100 ft down stream from the main dam, providing a pool of 15-ft depth to protect the main structure from flood flows over the spill-way during the rainy season. A system of four 36-in. syphons was designed for discharging these flood waters from the lower depths of the lake, in order to avoid eventual sedimentation behind the dam. The lake has a length of 3300 ft, and its water level is controlled by an adjustable spillway permitting draw-down of eighty inches, amounting to 41,000 metric tons of available capacity. This regulation is necessary because of wide fluctuations in stream flow between day and night due to freezing of feeders. SUMPEARY OF CURRENT PRACTICES History The outcrop and surrounding area of Comincots Sullivan Mine was originally mined by small open cuts on surface and small open stopes underground to which shafts and adits were driven for access. When it was established that a commercial grade of ore was available, an adit was driven on the 4600 level (feet above sea level), and OM was extracted by larger scale open stoping leaving supporting pillars where necessary. After the depth of the ore body was proven to the 3900 level and an adit driven at this level, many miles of drifts, crosscuts, raises and sublevels were driven for the extraction of the ore above this level. Larger open stopea were extended from this development. The mining method was, and to a very limited degree still is, a benching method. Due to the strong hanging wall in this area of the mine, stopes with a width of 100 feet or more were opened. In 1931, because the orebody was proven to extend below the 3900 level, a winze was sunk from the 3900 level to the 3350 level. From this winze three intermediate levels were opened. Following a plan of development well in advance of production requirements, further sinking was done by winzes and eventually a large shaft was raised to surface. Prior to 1958 the 2850 level was bottom which since that time has been extended to the 2500 level. Open stopes were developed and mined as this area was opened up.

It has been known for many years that the efficiency of a water flood can be improved by lowering the water-oil mobility ratio in the system. Such a change leads to better sweep efficiency and also to more efficient oil displacement in the swept zone. Data from our laboratory water-flood tests of both small cores and long sand packs are presented which show that water mobility can be reduced and oil recovery increased by the addition of certain polymer solutions to flood water. The reduction in mobility, in many cases, is greater than would be expected from conventional viscosity measurements. These solutions, however, do not cause significant reductions in oil mobility. The over-all effect of these mobility changes is increased waterflood oil recovery. Encouraged by results of our laboratory work, we expanded our study to include pilot field tests of floods with such solutions. One such test, made in the West Cat Canyon field, Santa Barbara County, Calif., is described in detail in this paper. Three other field tests are also discussed. INTRODUCTION Oil production from most reservoirs following primary depletion and/or water flooding is often less than 50 per cent of the original oil in place. Heavy oil reservoirs seldom yield over 15 per cent of their original oil. With new reservoirs becoming harder to find, the improvement of oil recovery efficiency is one of our very important problems. We describe here some of our attempts to increase the efficiency of oil displacement by adding a water-soluble polymer, partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide, to flood water. This technique will be termed "polymer solution flooding". The concept of using high-viscosity water to increase the efficiency of water flooding is not new. In 1944 Detling (Shell Development Co.) obtained a patent covering the use of several additives for viscous water flooding.' His objective was to improve water-oil mobility ratios by increasing the viscosity of the flood water. Other patents2-27 have been granted covering specific water-SO~LIble polymers or specific conditions of viscous water flooding. Barnes'" described his laboratory model study of the injection of a viscous water slug into a reservoir which had been partially invaded by bottom water. He concluded that, for this type of reservoir, "the cost of viscous water should not exceed a few cents per barrel for viscous water slug injection to be economically feasible" Our studies have led us to a somewhat different conclusion in a number of cases where hydrolyzed polyacrylamide solutions have been injected into reservoir models or actual reservoirs. Possible reasons for this difference are discussed in this paper. Our studies have shown that polymer solutions may lead to an increase in oil recovery over that from an ordinary water flood by (1) improving sweep efficiency, (2) improving microscopic displacement efficiency, or (3) a combination of these mechanisms. In the work of Barnes, only the benefit of improved sweep efficiency was considered. Also, our work has shown that there are marked differences in the effectiveness of different water-soluble polymers as flood water additives. Partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide is better than many other water-soluble polymers we have tested because, even in very low concentrations, it can lead to increased oil recovery. This is an important advantage when either a dilute polymer solution is injected continuously or a relatively concentrated slug is injected followed by water. In the latter case! portions of the slug become diluted and function in the formation as very dilute solutions. As dilution takes place the effective slug size will increase which, in turn, will reduce the cost per barrel of the effective flooding medium. The reason that partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide solutions are more efficient at low concentrations than certain other polymer solutions of equivalent viscosity (when measured in conventional viscometers) is not fully understood. We do know that the shapes and sizes of macro-molecules dissolved or suspended in liquids influence the flow properties of their solutions or suspensions. Solutions of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide cause greater reductions in water mobility than would be expected from conventional viscosity measurements. LABORATORY STUDIES Laboratory water floods were run in linear and radial systems with different water-soluble polymers and under varying conditions of flow. including reservoir conditions of temperature, pressure and fluid composition. Some of these runs are considered in this section. OIL DISPLACEMENT IN LINEAR MODELS In this group of runs the sweep efficiency approached 100 per cent because the linear sand packs used were as nearly uniform as possible. Results reflect primarily the micro-scopic displacement efficiencies. The laboratory models were unconsolidat-ed sand packs the lengths of which varied from about 4 in, to 40 ft. Further information on the flow models used is listed in Table 1. Using conventional procedures, water floods were run on sand packs containing either refined or crude oil at restored state. Frequently, a repeat run, similar to the first, was made as a check. Then a third run was made on the restored-state model using either polymer solution or a combination of polymer solution (slug) and water. Details of these runs are also reported in Table 1. An interesting development of copper blast-furnace construction has been brought about in adapting the blast-furnace to be a "burner" for sulphuric acid making. When the Tennessee Copper Co. first decided to construct an acid-plant, the standard type of brick-top furnace, supported by structural steel, was the only one in use at its plant. All the tests for temperature and strength of gas had been made on these furnaces, and had been satisfactory. When, however, the acid-plant was put on the flue, and the flue had to have a damper put in it to force the gas into that plant, troubles began. The furnaces were fairly tight, and for a few months the work was quite satisfactory. Fig. 1 shows the old type of furnace-top used at the start. It was soon found that this top would not stand the temperatures, particularly when dampered back, as was necessary to force the gas into the Glover towers. The structural steel, of which the furnace skeleton was constructed, warped and twisted so badly that it was not safe to use the furnaccs. This effect is shown by Fig. 2, which is a photograph of old No. 4 furnace, after the brick-work had been removed. It became apparent that a new type of top mas necessary and the engineering force was started on the design of a new furnace-top, with the result that a low top, with brick-lined flues at each end below the feed-floor, leading to the main concrete dust-chamber, was constructed. This furnace, No. 7, is shown in Fig. 3. The charging-doors are made of cast-iron sections, three sections to a door, and three doors to a side. DOUBT in anyone's mind that this is the age of metals, industrially speaking, could easily have been dispelled by attending the National Metal Congress in Chicago, Sept. 22 to 26. Iron, copper and aluminum; zinc, lead and nickel, often alloyed with each other or with some of a dozen minor metals, make the materials without which the modern world could not run. Science, pure and applied, is doing marvels in finding new mixtures, new alloys to meet new needs; in developing new means of rolling, fabricating, casting and welding metals cheaply-and effectively. These and related matters were the subject of 100 papers presented at 33 seperate sessions of the organizations that participated in the congress.

On the preceding pages, operations of the four major producers of nickel today have been described. There are, however, other operations in the world that, while not as large, are still of importance to the over-all picture of the industry. Among these are the Finnish producer, Outokumpu Oy, a state-controlled company that operates the Kotlahti mine 200 miles northeast of Helsinki. The ore from this operation, which began production in 1959, is pentlandite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite, occurring as disseminations in the host rock and in breccias. The flowsheet of the 1500-tpd mill at Kotlahti follows standard practices of crushing, grinding, and flotation to produce a pentlandite-pyrrhotite concentrate and a copper concentrate, both of which are shipped to the smelter at Harjavalta.

It is proposed that the intergranular corrosion of austenitic stainless steels is associated with the presence of continuous grain houndary paths of either second phase, or solute segregate resulting from solute-vacancy interactions. Experimental observations of structural changes and crrosion behavior of different types of austenitic stainless steel provide support for this poposal. On the basis of this model, it is shown that the intergranular -corrosion susceptibility of austenitic stainless steels in nitric-dic hromate solution may be substantially reduced either by suitable heat treatments or by impurity control. AUSTENITIC stainless steels, such as Type 304, generally have excellent corrosion resistant properties when properly solution heat-treated and used at temperatures where carbide precipitation is slow. However, several corrosion environments have been found which produce intergranular corrosion of solu-tion-treated stainless steels, that is, those steels with no detectable carbide precipitation.''2 Of the various corrosion environments, the most widely used test solution has been the boiling nitric-dichromate solution. In these acid solutions, stainless steels have been found to be susceptible to intergranular attack despite the addition of carbide-forming elements such as titanium or columbium, or despite lowering of the carbon content or use of high-temperature solution treatments. Studies of the electrochemical mechanism of corrosion attack have been made by several worke1s3'4 who found that oxidizing ions such as crt6 depolarize the cathodic reactions and consequently raise the open-circuit potential of stainless steel immersed in nitric acids. As a result of this, the anodic reaction is accelerated. The reason for the localization of anodic activity at the grain boundaries, and resulting intergranular corrosion, has not been conclusively determined. Several workers, e.g., Streicher,3 and Coriou et al.,4 have suggested that the strain energy associated with grain boundaries provides the driving force for the accelerated intergranular corrosion. This argument would predict that alloys of high purity would still be susceptible to intergranular attack. However, work by chaudron5 and by ArmijO,6 has shown that high-purity alloys are immune to attack, in disagreement with this argument. An alternative suggestion is that chemical concentration differences exist between grains and grain boundaries, that is, impurity segregation at boundaries, and that these chemical differences provide the driving force for localized attack. It is this impurity segregation which can lead to accelerated dissolution of grain boundaries when the alloy is exposed to a suitable corrodant. This mechanism would predict the immunity of high-purity alloys to inter-granular attack, which is in agreement with experi-mental observations. In the present paper, some recent studies on inter-granular corrosion of austenitic stainless steels which were conducted by coworkers and myself will be re-tibility A simple model will be described in which it is proposed that the intergranular corrosion of aus-tenitic stainless steel is associated with the presence of continuous grain boundary paths of either second phase or solute-segregated regions.* On the basis of this model, it is suggested that the intergranular corrosion rate can be markedly reduced by the formation of a discontinuous second phase at the grain boundaries if the discontinuous second phase incorporates the major part of the segregating solute, drained from the grain boundary region. Results are presented of corrosion tests and electron microscopic studies of different types of austenitic stainless steel after various heat treatments which provide experimental support for this model. Finally, a solute clustering mechanism, based on a solute-vacancy interaction, is shown to be consistent with the results obtained for inter-granular corrosion of solution-treated austenitic stainless steels. EXPERIMENTAL Corrosion tests using weight loss measurements were made on sheet specimens, which were lightly electropolished, washed, and immersed in boiling (115°C) 5 N HN03 containing 4 g crt+6 per liter added as potassium dichromate. Studies in which the inter-granular penetration depth was measured both by electrical resistance and metallographic methods have shown an empirical correlation between the rate of intergranular penetration and the weight loss per unit time for identically treated specimens of stainless steel." As a result, although all the corrosion data reported here are in terms of simple weight loss measurements, these data are considered to reflect primarily the rate of intergranular dissolution. Fig. 1 shows a typical result of intergranular attack of a solution-treated Type 304 stainless steel after 4 hr in a boiling nitric-dichromate solution. The wide grain boundary grooving at the surface, and the attack at incoherent twin boundaries, are evident; very little corrosion attack is seen at the coherent twin boundaries. PALEOLITHIC MAN, laboriously shaping a stone implement in his cave, discovered that the dust irritated his eyes and nostrils and hindered his labors, whereupon, muttering a few incantations, forerunners of modern profanity, he removed himself and his work outside. There, ignoring the jeers of the hairy ?old-timers,? he turned his back to the wind and resumed operations in comparative comfort. Thus originated the dust problem in the mineral industries, and its solution. Despite long familiarity with the annoyance, danger, and loss occasioned by dust, little progress was made in the engineering solution of its problems until recent years. Some advance can now be reported but too many traces of ancient tradition and practice still remain. Considerable published information is available but only a part of this is of proved accuracy and utility. The greater portion is either misleading, being derived from too few cases to be of general application, or entirely erroneous, originating in guesswork, legend, or individual inspiration, divine or otherwise. The engineer, confronted with a dust problem, has neither the time nor the special training required to extract the values from this mass of low-grade. It is, therefore, desirable that we attempt to correlate the known values and to put them into a form upon which actual progress can be based. This discussion is, then, for the benefit of that engineer, particularly the engineer in the mineral industries and more particularly in ore-dressing plants, and is merely a gathering of facts already known but difficult to segregate.

Boliden Metall Aktiebolag, the prime base metal mining company of Sweden, treats some 10-10.9 t/y (11-12 stpy) of sulphide ore in nine concentrators. During the years considerable effort has been devoted to the development of all phases of the technology of ore prospecting, mining, milling, smelting and refining. This has been necessary due to the complex and low grade ores. The autogenous grinding technique was first studied within the company as early as 1945. Basic test work commenced during the early fifties, whereby the merits of pebble grinding could be evaluated.
