INTRODUCTION Historically, planning a mine involved the economic decision of whether to mine by open-pit methods or underground methods. The method selected was influenced by a number of factors, including size, tenor, and location of the deposit. If the project could not be justified by either underground or open-pit practices, it remained in fallow until economic conditions changed or technology advanced. Technology has advanced and the mining industry now has another option, that of in situ leaching. This method is on the threshold of becoming a commonly used alternative for production in many types of metal and mineral deposits. It will be utilized as the primary method for developing an ore body or as an adjunct to open-pit or underground operations. The following considers application of the technique to a deposit that had been partially exploited by open-pit methods. HISTORY The Big Mike Copper Mine is located approximately 30 miles south of Winnemucca, in Pershing County, Nevada. Interest in the property dates from the turn of the century, but little exploration was undertaken until the mid '60s. In 1967 Cerro Corporation acquired the property and initiated a major drilling effort. Ranchers Exploration obtained the property after this exploration program in late 1969 and confirmation drilling was undertaken. The deposit was delineated and it was determined that reserves amounted to about 100,000 tons of 10.0% massive copper sulfide ore and 700,000 tons of 2 .O% mixed oxide-sulfide ore. Airborne geochemistry became a reality with the advent of a high-sensitivity air¬borne gamma ray spectrometer with large volume NAI(Tl) crystal detectors. The high-sensitivity spectrometer measures small variations in the concentration of potassium (as Ks°), thorium (as Tl308) and uranium (as Bi.214) along the flight lines in the area surveyed. Hydrothermal dispersion patterns are indicated by anomalous measured values of the concentrations of potassium, thorium, uranium, or their ratios. In two recent Australian survey areas, copper mineralization was located along favorable structures within hydrothermal dispersion patterns delineated by airborne geochemical surveys. In metamorphic terrane where there had been po¬tassium metasomatism, the hydrothermal dispersion patterns were indicated by high potassium/uranium ratios (K40/Bi). In a sedimentary environment that had been intruded by a stock, the path of hydrothermal fluids was indicated by uranium (Bi214), thorium (TV'), and uranium/ thorium (Bi214/Tl208) ratios.

IT SEEMS strange that so many years after the pas¬sage of the first acts requiring registration or licensing of engineers, so few members of the mining branch of the profession are aware of what has taken place. Laws regulating the practice of engineering have now been passed in 19 states of this country, and in many others, such legislation has been proposed. That such laws are necessary for the protection of life, health and property, as is stated in most of them, is doubted by many. That the standing of the engineering profession will be improved by them is certainlyy open to question. That such laws are a welcome addition to the regulation of business by governmental agency, is not likely to be a general opinion. That once more, and in spite of appeals to engineers to interest themselves in affairs of government, an active minority has succeeded in imposing its will on a passive majority, seems but too true. However, the laws are there and information regarding them should be of use and interest to those most directly concerned.

Measurements of gravity with gravimeters have come into increased use in this country and abroad in the past five years. Probably 100 to 125 gravimeter parties are working in the United States alone. In oil exploration, gravimeter methods have relegated the gravity pendulum definitely to second place, if not third, and now closely rival and possibly surpass the torsion balance in many applications. Gravimeters have lately been applied in mining, although it is doubtful whether they will ever replace electrical or magnetic methods in this work. Notwithstanding the widespread application of gravimeters, there has been no article covering the entire field in the domestic or foreign literature. The purpose of this paper is to meet the demand for comprehensive engineering information on the subject. The working principles of a number of gravimeters will be illustrated and treated in relation to the action of corresponding seismometers and astatization methods. The mathematical discussion of theory has been confined to the most necessary fundamentals and been given in as elementary form as possible. A description of calibration methods constitutes the last part of the paper. The symbols shown at the top of page 197 will be used in equations throughout the paper. Dynamic and Static Gravity Methods Methods of measuring gravity fall into two groups: dynamic and static methods. The first group involves the measurement of time. Examples are: determinations of the period of oscillation of a pendulum, measurements involving the free fall of a body, and comparisons of gravity with the centrifugal force of a rotating body. Measurements in the second group of gravity methods are concerned with deflections of certain indicators when the force of gravity is in equilibrium with another comparison force.

IRving Ariel Stearns died at his home, 60 South River St., Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on Tuesday morning, Oct. 5, 1920, of pneumonia, after an illness of about a month. In his death, the Wyoming Valley loses one oflits most eminent and best loved citizens, and the loss of so strong a participant in the activities of the Valley will leave a gap most difficult to fill. Despite his more than three score and fifteen years, Mr. Stearns, at the time of his death, was president of the Wilkes-Barre City Hospital, Wyoming National Bank, and the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society, chairman of the Board of the Vulcan Iron Works, and a director of the Spring Brook Water Supply Co., and of the Wilkes-Barre Lace Manufacturing Co. Mr. Stearns came of New England stock, a descendant in the eighth generation of Charles Stearns who was admitted freeman in Watertown in 1646. Irving Ariel Stearns was born Sept. 12, 1845, in Rushville, N. Y., a son of George W. and Miranda (Tufts) Stearns. He was graduated from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Troy, N. Y., in the celebrated Class of 1868. After graduation, he was assistant professor of chemistry in charge of the analytical laboratory for a year, then went to Wilkes-Barre in 1869, as engineer in the office of R. P. Rothwell, at that time the leading mining engineer of the region. From 1871 to 1872, he was superintendent of the McNeal Coal & Iron Co. of Schuylkill County, Pa. and in 1872 succeeded to Mr. Rothwell's business when the latter became editor of the Engineering & Mining Journal of New York. From 1872 to 1885, Mr. stearns was in private practice as a mining engineer, handling a great amount of business in the anthracite region, including the building of the bridges at Shickshinny and Pittston, and the surveying and mapping of many of the individually operated mines. His practice extended throughout the country, with numerous examinations and reports upon mining properties in Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Arkansas, Colorado, California, Wyoming, Idaho and Utah; he was responsible for the design and execution of the Lehigh Valley Railroad Co.'s great Tifft Farm improvements at Buffalo, N. Y. including canals, docks, coal stocking plant, etc. He was commissioned Quartermaster of the Ninth Regiment, N. G. P., March 29, 1880, was promoted to Major on May 15, 1884, and resigned Apr. 1, 1885. He always retained his interest in the National Guard and was trustee and president of the Ninth Regiment Armory Association.

MINERAL production of the United States is valued at over five billion dollars a year at present and the industry employs close to a million workmen, yet such maps as are available that might indicate the geographical distribution of this industry show only the location of coal and oil fields and of other mineral deposits. No recent map is available that shows this distribution in a quantitative way. The purpose of the maps and graphs here presented is twofold: (1) to give the mining engineer a clear conception of the relative value and the pattern of distribution of minerals in the United States; (2) to test the so-called block-pile (or grouped pillar) system of statistical mapping, which makes this presentation possible. (I discussed this method of mapping in an article which appeared in Economic Geology in 1939, Vol. 15, p. 185-188.)

The effect of a near-saturation unidirectional magnetic field was to decrease slightly the endurance life in Armco iron in the annealed condition. This is expected since the energy-absorbing mechanism associated with domain wall movemenfs is inhibited bv the strong field. THE factors determining failure under dynamic loading are not yet clearly recognized. One of the properties of a metal which might be thought to influence fatigue life is its damping capacity. Foppl1 conducted an alternating torsion test at a frequency of 700 cpm continuously for a period of 3 years, without the test piece breaking or showing any sign of deterioration after 1100 Million cycles of stress; the rate of dissipation of energy was sufficient to maintain the test piece at about 100°C above the ambient temperature. cazaud2 concludes from this, and others follow him, that ('the capacity for dissipation in the form of heat by internal damping is unlimited" and that therefore "damping is not directly related with fracture by fatigue." Many publications to date have advocated under- seas mining operations, optimistically overlooking the paucity of information on mineral distribution and the ocean environments in which minerals occur. Such articles (smattered with opinion, as is this article) are herein tempered by my more conservative views on the economics of mining under the seas. For purposes of this paper, underseas mining refers only to the deeper surficial deposits of the continental shelf and the deep sea floor, i.e., the deposits of phosphorite and manganese nodules.

9.61. Introduction. Open pit mining methods produce more than 80% of all raw materials today in the United States. Much of this comes either from properties that formerly employed underground methods and were converted to open pit or from mines that ultimately must go underground when the economic stripping limit is reached. Generally the ores are transported over large vertical distances and techniques have been developed to do this economically. One approach is to combine conventional surface trucking, over relatively level roads, with the use of gravity and underground facilities. There are various modifications, depending upon the character of the orebody and the topography. Several schemes, as used in Sweden, Canada, and the United States, merit describing. One of the critical problems involved in the transference of ores from surface to underground is that of flow of bulk solids. Must it be crushed? Will it hang up in the transfer? What size and inclination of ore pass are required. How is the ore best fed onto the transporting device underground? As an example, the planning engineers for the Carol Project of the Iron Ore Company of Canada faced these problems in making their designs for the production and transportation of some 55,000 tpd from their Smallwood Mine in Labrador. Other operations, facing somewhat similar conditions, used other approaches of interest. This chapter describes some of the factors involved in the design, construction, and operation of a combination surface underground transportation system as applied to open pit mining operations. 9.62. THE Alaska Juneau mine has been developed through an adit driven at the elevation of the top of the mill and all mining is done above this main haulage level. As a result of wholesa1e"mining operations about 11,000 tons rock containing one dollar' per ton in gold is, hauled to the. concentrator during every 24 hr. Due to the method of mining, whereby a system of oreways delivers-the.ore direct from the stope to the bottom level of the mine, no tramming of ore is done on any of the upper levels. However, ;in doing exploratory drifting and crosscutting on the upper levels, the broken material is trammed by hand in 1-ton 18-in. gage cars to a nearby raise connecting with one of the several oreways. This constitutes the only tramming operation except that on the main level.

The temperature of a material may be ascertained by measurement of the intensity of the radiant energy it emits. This measurement may refer to the radiation of all wave lengths emitted by the material, or, if the material is glowing, the measurement may refer to the visible light emitted, or to the radiation in n very restricted portion of the visible spectrum. In general, the intensity of radiation depends not alone upon the temperature of the source, but, also upon its nature. Thus, glowing carbon appears to the eye about three times as bright as glowing platinum, at the same temperature. This is technically expressed by saying that the emissive power or emissivity of carbon is about three times that of platinum. A material having the highest theoretically possible emissivity is known as a "black body;" it is customary to assign a numerical value of 1 to the emissivity of a black body. A black body is experimentally realized by uniformly heating a hollow enclosure and observing the radiation coming from a small opening in the wall. The intensity of radiation emitted from this opening depends only on the temperature of the walls, and not on the material of which they are constructed. If E is the emissivity of any non-transparent material and R is its reflection coefficient, it can be shown that E + R, = 1. If a material having an emissivity of, say, 0.40, and hence a reflection coefficient of 0.60, is placed inside a black body it becomes indistinguishable from its Surroundings, because the total intensity of radiation leaving the material is the same as that emitted by the black body. While the material actually emits only 40 per cent of the intensity of a black body at the same temperature, 60 per cent. of the radiation falling upon it from the walls of the enclosure is reflected. However, if the material is removed from the black body and placed in the open air, the reflected intensity is no longer present and the object appears but 40 per cent. as bright as a black body at the same temperature.

Manganese is a nearly white metal, having about the same appearance when fractured as white cast-iron. Its specific gravity is about 8, while that of white cast-iron, reasonably free from impurities, is but a little above 7.5. As produced commercially, it is combined with iron, and with small percentages of silicon, phosphorus, and sulphur. It is generally produced in the blast-furnace. If the silicon is under 0.50 per cent., the product will be white. If the manganese is under 40 per cent., with the remainder mostly iron, and silicon not high enough to make the product gray, the alloy is called spiegeleisen, and the fracture will show flat reflecting surfaces, from which it takes its name. With manganese above 50 per cent., the iron alloy is called ferromanganese. As manganese increases beyond 50 per cent., the mass cracks in cooling, and when it approaches 98 per cent. the mass crumbles or falls in small pieces. When the percentage of manganese is high, the planes of the fracture are not so bright as when it is lower. The ferro-manganese which we have used in the experiments reported in this paper, contains Mn, 81.62; Si, 0.256 ; and combined carbon, 6.153 per cent. We have not been able to make test-bars from this, because the alloy cracks in small pieces in cooling. Manganese combines with iron in almost any proportion, but if an iron containing manganese is remelted, more or less of the manganese will escape by volatilization, and by oxidation with other elements present in the iron. If sulphur be present, some of the manganese will be likely to unite with it and escape, thus reducing the amount of both elements in the casting. Hence, in remelting irons, some of the sulphur which has entered from the fuel with which the iron is melted will very likely unite with some of the manganese in irons which make up the mixture and escape. Remelting, therefore,' reduces the percentage of manganese in cast-iron.

1. Healthy and active Local Section organizations are vital factors in promoting the vigor and growth of the Institute. 2. Activity on the part of Local. Sections should be recognized and stim¬ulated by appropriation of funds from the Institute's treasury; and these appropriations should be as large as is consistent with the relative needs for other activities. 3. As between different Sections, the amount of such appropriations should be based primarily on the extent of activities as reflected in the number and character, of meetings held and the attendance of the members at such meetings. 4. In making a request for funds for any year, the officers of a Local Section should submit a report on the printed form approved by the Directors at their meeting on November 19, 1937. 5. A . standing Committee on Local Section Appropriations, consisting of one past chairman of a Local Section, one member of the Institute's Executive Committee, and one member of the Finance Committee, shall be appointed by the President and shall pass upon requests for appropriations and authorize payments within bounds of the budget. The committee will be guided by the principles herein outlined, always having in mind the vital importance of healthy, active sections to the welfare of the Institute as a whole.

THE phase behavior of a number of binary systems consisting of paraffin hydro-carbons has been determined in recent years. In addition, the composition of the coexisting phases of mixtures of crude oil and natural gas has been investigated.1 However, the latter study did not include information concerning the influence of the concentration of a component upon its distribution between two coexisting phases. Owing to the paucity of such information it was considered desirable to investigate in some detail the composition of the co-existing phases in the methane-propane-n-pentane system throughout the greater part of the two-phase region at a tempera-ture of 100°F. Information of this nature also permits the establishment of the critical behavior of this ternary system.

L. H. Hart (Chief Geologist, American Smelting & Refining Co.)— Because of a widely recognized association between breccia pipes of one form or another and many important copper deposits, conditions under which breccia pipes develop have been of great scientific interest for many years. Since these phenomena first attracted attention, many theories have been advanced to explain their origin. This is not unexpected, since it is likely that they have been formed by and under a wide range of conditions. Moreover, the entire subject is confused by the fact that the term brec-cia pipe is applied to a wide variety of occurrences. To discuss any part of the subject intelligently, therefore, it is necessary to start with definitions of the terms used. In their discussion of the Toquepala deposit, Richard and Courtright have carefully defined the terms they have used in their presentation of a very logical geological history of Toquepala breccias. This is a real contribution, as there is no reference in the literature known to the writer where the history of a series of breccia pipe epochs, confined essentially within one channelway, may be read with the degree of certainty that appears to be possible at Toquepala. Although the following comments are intended primarily to emphasize points brought out in the article by Richard and Courtright, certan subsequent detailed mapping by Hollister and Houston7 within the main central mineralized area of the Toquepala deposits not only supports most of Richard's and Courtright's con- clusions but also contributes additional facts that strengthen and broaden the whole concept of the origin of the Toquepala breccia pipes. In detailed mapping by Hollister and Houston,' the most significant feature disclosed is a well developed system of concentric fracturing in rocks peripheral to the main breccia pipe throughout an arc of 300°, interrupted only by the late dacite agglomerate in the north quadrant. Although Richard and Courtright noted that such fractures were developed in the southern and southeastern areas, continuity in the east and west quadrants is established by consistent orientation of the stronger set of fractures and joints. The existence of these structural weakness trends is emphasized by the emplacement of dike-like phenomena in and along members of this fracture system. Richard and Courtright described one of these dikes in the southeast quadrant. They referred to it as a ring-dike, composed of dacite porphyry. This suggests an apparent structural control of at least a part of the dacite porphyry intrusion by features related to the Toquepala breccia pipe center. This raises a perplexing question, since the dacite porphyry intrusion had been presumed to antedate breccia pipe activity. However, if this ring-dike is related to the breccia pipe center, it may indicate that some part of the dacite porphyry intrusion advanced in a manner resulting in an intensely localized stress center, which produced the concentrically arranged fracture system. IN 1914, the officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., faced with the problem of introducing new methods to increase production in the old and nearly depleted pools of Venango County, became interested in the Smith-Dunn (Marietta) process which was at that time being tried out in southeastern Ohio and which was already yielding very encouraging results. A license to use the process in Pennsylvania was secured from the owners of the patents. These patents were later declared invalid. The method was first used in Pennsylvania on a property consisting of about 434 acres, of which 300 are productive, at Hamilton Corners, 15 miles northeast of Oil City, in Cherry Tree and Oakland Townships, Venango County. The producing horizon is the First Sand of the Venango Group. A small oil pool was opened up in this vicinity in 1904. By July, 1916, when the compressed air was first introduced to restore pressure, the production had dropped to a point where it was no longer possible to continue profitable operation. From that time until March, 1927, over 100,000 bbl. of oil have been recovered from the tract. The property is being operated at present by the Brundred Oil Corpn. and Lux. The 1926 production, amounting to 10,650 bbl., was only 400 bbl. short of the maximum reached during any year of the 10-year period that the process has been in operation. Inasmuch as the Hamilton Corners pool is the first one in Pennsylvania in which the Marietta process was tried out, and the one in which it has been longest in continuous operation, considerable interest attaches to the results obtained. J: Brundred, officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., all their data on this operation were made available to the writer in connection with an investigation of rejuvenation methods in the State for the Pennsylvania Geological Survey.
