LATE in 1944 a group of petroleum and coal technologists was organized in Wash¬ington under the sponsorship of the Petroleum Administration for War and the U. S. Bureau of Mines. This group, known as the Technical Oil Mission, was placed under the authority of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which was then promoting the organization of other missions to be sent to Germany to obtain technical information regarding various industries in that country. The objective of the Technical Oil Mission was to obtain technical data on German production of synthetic oil from coal and all other commercial practices and research projects connected with the oil industry. The primary purpose was to obtain such data as were immediately essential to assist the war against Germany and Japan, with secondary emphasis on technical information that would assist American industry after the end of the war. Since oil-production facilities in Ger¬many and the occupied countries con¬trolled by Germany were the top targets for strategic bombing, the Technical Oil Mission was the first group under the Technical Industrial Intelligence Com¬mittee to enter Germany. A few members of the group flew to London in February 1945 and the majority of the remainder followed in March. In London they were joined by an equal number of British investigators and the combined, mission was then sent into Germany under the authority of the Combined Intelligence Objectives Subcommittee (CIOS). A sum¬mary of the more important information gained by this combined British and American mission is presented below. GERMAN OIL PRODUCTION The oil available to Germany, both natural and synthetic, and including pro¬duction from occupied countries, reached a peak in late 1943 and early 1944. Pro¬duction at this time was at the rate of 1,200,000 metric tons per month, equiva¬lent to i00,000,000 bbl. per year, or about 7 per cent of the wartime production in the United States. Of this production, 50 per cent was crude oil from Romania and Hungary, 12 per cent was crude oil from Germany itself, including Austria, 9 per cent com¬prised coal-carbonization products, that is, tar and light oil, and only the remaining 29 per cent was synthetic liquid fuel made from coal or tar. Synthetic liquid fuel made in Germany was equivalent therefore to less than 2 per cent of war¬time production of crude oil in the United States. The success of the strategic bombing campaign against German oil-production facilities is demonstrated by the fact that by September 1944 the Ploesti fields of Romania and much of the syn¬thetic oil production had been eliminated, so that the amount of oil available to the German war machine was only 25 per cent of the peak quantity mentioned above. The occurrence of Laves phases (AB,) in various binary alloy systems has been reviewed in recent papers.13 Iron forms Laves phases with Sc-, Ti-, V- and Cr-group elements. However, two of the corresponding Laves phases with cobalt, namely MoCo, and WCo,, are missing. Nickel forms binary Laves phases with Sc and Y, but not with any Ti-, V-, or Cr-group element. These conditions are schematically illustrated in Table I. That electron concentration is a significant factor in determining which type of Laves phase is formed in a given case was recognized long ago by Laves and Witte,4 This concept has been more recently applied to Laves phases formed by transition ele-ments. It now appears that the average electron concentration (average number of electrons per atom outside of the closed shells of the component atoms) may be an important factor also in determining whether or not a Laves phase can occur at all in a given system. As shown in Table I, in the transition element systems considered Laves phases are absent at electron concentrations of 8, or larger (to the right and below the double line in Table I). These absences clearly cannot be accounted for on atomic size considerations, as evidenced by the many inconsistencies apparent in Table 11. While the ideal radius ratio for Laves phases is 1.222, in the systems which do have Laves phases the ratios of CN 12 radii range from 1.10 to 1.46. The consistent absence of Laves phases at RA/RB< 1.10 might be attributed to the low values of these radius ratios. However, Table II shows that absences also occur irregularly throughout the radius ratio range covered. Introduction BELLE ISLE, located in the low sea marshes near Atchafalaya Bay, is the southeasternmost of the famous Five Salt Islands of Louisiana. Rising about 80 ft. (24 m.) above the level of the surrounding marsh and being some 800 acres (323 ha.) in extent, it constitutes a striking landmark on the low Gulf coast, and since the eighteenth century, when it played an important part in the operation of the buccaneers, it has been intermittently frequented by man. In 1897, the writer discovered the great mass of salt that underlies the island and shortly afterward pub-lished a brief account of the geology of Belle Isle and the neighboring salt islands.&apos; In that paper he described principally the salt, but pointed out also the occurrence of petroleum and of sulphur in the strata above the salt. Since that time the island has been extensively explored by the drill, and the developments up to 1908 have been described by Veatch2 and Harris," and Knapp.4 The writer&apos;s early conclusions as to the probable presence of sulphur in considerable quantity have been confirmed by the later drilling, some of the wells having found quantities of gas containing sulphur dioxide and a number of sulphur-bearing strata as well. Under the stimulus of the present keen demand for sulphur for war purposes, a syndicate of New York capitalists was recently formed to explore the sulphur resources of the island in more detail. Under the writer&apos;s direction, six wells were drilled for this syndicate during the winter of 1916-17. The present paper presents briefly the results of this work and sums up the present knowledge of the geology of this highly interesting locality.

THE growing importance of metallography has caused a corresponding interest in the improvement of apparatus for preparing specimens of metals and alloys for microscopic examination. The purpose of this paper is to describe an electric heating-furnace, a grinding-and-polishing machine, and a device for mounting specimens, which are used in the metallographical work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. These three pieces of apparatus were designed and made in the laboratory of the Institute, and. each possesses some original features which may be of interest. ELECTRIC HEATING-FURNACE., The accurate control of heat necessary for metallographic work is best obtained by the electric-resistance furnace. Unfortunately, however, even the platinum-wound furnaces deteriorate with use and ultimately burn out, while the cheaper resistance-materials are often short-lived. Since the resistance-coil must be replaced from time to time, it is of advantage to be able to make this change with as little trouble as possible, and this is an important feature in the furnace shown in Fig. 1. Introduction The procedures used to design slopes in rock have only been developed over the past 10 years. Therefore, continued review and assessment of field experience by the publication of case studies is necessary to determine the accuracy of the theory and the application of the design techniques being used. Where failures have occurred, mine management should insist that the slides be &apos;back analyzed&apos; to determine the shear strength parameters at failure. These values should be used for any pit design as they reflect site conditions more accurately than any other procedure. The previous papers have dealt with the basic concepts and factors that influence stability. To illustrate the application of these concepts in the study of practical stability problems, six ease studies have been selected for review. The examples include failure of tailings dams due to an earthquake, failure and redesign of a slope in overburden, review of failures of rock slopes, calculation of the amount of seepage into a pit and influence of the groundwater on stability, and the design of slopes for a proposed 2,500 ft. deep open pit mine. All but the first example are drawn from the authors personal experience. EXAMPLE 1 Failure of Tailings Dams Due to an Earthquake On March 28. 1965 a serious earthquake occurred in Chile with the epicenter located near the town of La Liqua, about 80 miles north of Santiago. The earthquake had a rating of 7 to 7.25 on the Richter scale. A record of the acceleration was taken at Santiago where a maximum horizontal acceleration of 0.18 g. was recorded. Many small mines are located in this region. Each of the mines provided impoundment storage for tailings with one to three dykes. As a result of the earthquake, most of the dams failed. The most serious failure involved two dams at El Cobre where more than 2,700,000 cu. yd. of tailings flowed into the valley, travelled over 7 miles in a few minutes, destroyed part of the town of El Cobre and killed more than 200 people. The Chilean government commissioned an investigation into the failures. A summary of the findings was published by Dobry and Alvare7 in 1967 (1). THE hoisting equipment selected for use at the Hecla mine in 1907 was one of the first Ilgner type Ward-Leonard controlled hoists put into ser- vice. Development of the Hecla below the 2000-ft. level, which is the ultimate depth of the old equipment, and the additional service required by the "Star," necessitated additional hoisting capacity. It will be our endeavor to give j70u a brief summary of the engineering which determined the selection of the new equipment. The engineer in making his decision as to size, speed, etc., must .make a duty study approximating as closely &s possible the actual opePating conditions which will eventually result. Primarily, it is necessary to know what work must be done. The amount of material which must be hoisted under the maximum condition, as well as its distribution from the various levels of the mine was carefully studied by the mining engineering department, as the ore reserves, their relative-position and the probable method of working them had to be considered. The final figures reached, taking into consideration four different operating conditions, were, in tons per day, as follows:

IN reverberatory smelting, fuel is the chief item of expense, as it commonly is in processes using large percentages of it. Hence the most suitable supply is eagerly sought; that is, the supply which, in the end, yields the greatest net profit. The better grades are not infrequently bought, even at an advanced price, because they are apt to be decidedly more economical. High price, of itself, however, is no merit, for freight is generally the largest part of the cost of fuel, and the nearby supply may yield as high efficiency as that from a greater distance. If a poorer grade is reasonably good, and if its cost is low enough to more than offset the decreased technical efficiency, it is of course the more suitable. Any smelting, operation depends for both efficiency and economy on raising the furnace atmosphere considerably above the "critical" temperature; that is, above the temperature at which smelting is completed. If this temperature is not exceeded, smelting stops, no matter how much coal is burned; and the real value of a fuel depends on the number of degrees that the temperature is continuously kept above this point. For example, if one fuel maintains 2,500° F. and another only 2,100° F., while the "critical" temperature is 2,000° F., the first is worth at least five times as much as the second, although the increase above atmospheric temperature is only one-fifth more in one case than in the other. This "margin of temperature" above the smelting point is much more significant than the total number of heat units developed from the fuel. The case is parallel to that of water flowing from a pipe. The reservoir may contain a billion gallons of water; but, even though the fluid has come to the nozzle, not a drop will run out, where it can be of practical use, unless the level in the reservoir is higher than the nozzle; and the speed and volume of flow depend on how much higher the level is in the reservoir than at this point. If the temperature inn a furnace is not above the critical level there will be no slag to flow over the skimming plate, even though there are enough heat units to bring an unlimited quantity of charge up to the point of slag formation; and just as the value of a water supply for the purpose of putting out a fire depends largely on the effective head, so the difficulties of furnace management

BASED upon an instrumental improvement, a new development has taken place in the art of electrical prospecting, and some remarkable results have already been obtained with regard to potential exploration. In order to visualize the importance of this development, it is deemed advisable to review briefly the fundamental facts about potential surveys. Potential exploration may be carried out qualitatively or quantitatively. Qualitative investigations are made by determining and plotting on a map points of equal potential, whereby any anomalies are revealed, without, however, much clue to their magnitude. Quantitative investigations determine the variations of potential or potential drop, and thus show not only the location of the anomalies, but also their magnitude. Figs. 1 to 6 illustrate the influence of simple types of ground inhomo-geneities, assuming one effective exciter potential only. Such a condition can be closely realized by connecting an electric current source to two electrodes, one of which, is located at a great distance. Assuming uniform ground resistivity, the resultant potential distribution may be represented by concentric spheres. Any change from the normal condition causes a characteristic distortion of the spheres, which becomes different for different types of resistivity variation. The series of Figs. la to 6a illustrates schematically results of qualitative investigations and series 1b to 6b results of quantitative investigations. Figs. 1 and 2 picture the well-known case of local resistivity variations normally encountered in ore prospecting. Figs. 3 and 4 show the reactions caused by more or less vertical resistivity contacts and Figs. 5 and. 6 refer to the problem of ground-water and bedrock investigations where the resistivity contact is horizontal or nearly so. It is evident from Figs. 5a and 6a that qualitative measurements do not permit an identification of such general geological features as widespread horizontal strata, because the resultant contraction or expansion of the equipotential circles at the surface cannot be recognized without quantitative determinations. RECENTLY, cases of coexisting ordered and disordered phase equilibria have been reported among face-centered cubic metals,1"3 but not on body-centered cubic systems.4 McQueen and Kuczynski5 showed a single line as the boundary between ordered solid solution of Fe3Al type and corresponding disordered solution in the Fe-A1 phase diagram based mainly on dilatometric and magnetic measurements. Such a single line would indicate a second or higher order transition. or an absence of coexisting order and disorder. The writer found previously a two-phase equilibrium region at 800°C consisting of ordered and disordered solid solutions of Fe3Si in a matrix of approximately 1-6 wt pct Si (Fe3Si is of 14.3 wt pct Si). A similar two-phase region of ordered and disordered Fe3Al solid solutions might be expected if the similarity between Fe3Si and Fe3Si structures hold true. In the present investigation, a wire of 22 at. pct Al, balance Fe and 0.0513 cm in diameter was subjected to electrical resistivity measurement in vacuum as a function of temperature between 300 and 800°C, see Fig. 1. There was excellent agreement between data taken on heating and on cooling: no hysteresis was observed. The Curie temperature was determined to be 640 °C which agrees with the finding by McQueen and Kuczynski.5 But in addition, there were two transitional points in the resistance-temperature plot at 510oC and 400 "C. The former is thought to be a connection with the transition from disordered state to a coexisting order and disordered equilibrium state; while the latter, from such coexisting state to ordered state. Fig. 2 shows a phase diagram where the suggested two-phase region lies between dotted lines. The solid lines are those of McQueen and Kuczynski.5 Since these authors found only a single-phase boundary between ordered and disordered Fe3 Al, it would seem likely that the dilatometric method used by these authors was not sufficiently sensitive to resolve the ordering reaction into the two-phase boundaries. In addition, their phase diagram conflicts with the statement they make on P. 1 of their paper: "The sharpness of the peaks indicates that ordering to Fe3A1 is a first order reaction." The suggestion of coexisting order plus disorder in Fe3A1 must be considered tentative until confirmed by high-temperature X-ray examination. If

THE iron-ore deposits of Russia were estimated at 2,200,000,000 by the Russian Geological Survey, in 1910; but this estimate must be considered as being far too low. The estimate for Siberia, which had been explored very little for iron ore, was placed at about 27,000,000 tons. The exploration, in 1912-14, of the three iron deposits-Blagodat, Baakal and Kamensk-raised the estimate of the iron-ore reserves or the Urals from 282,000,000 tons to about 400,000,000 tons. Conservative estimates of the explored deposits made by the writer in 1915, gave the following figures: Southern Russia 900,000,000 tons, Ural Mountains 500,000,000 tons, Central Russia 900,000,- 000 tons, Siberia 100,000,000 tons, Caucasus 20,000,000 tons, or a total of 2,420,000,000 tons of iron ore, or 1,200,000,000 tons of pig iron.

IN times like these, the A. I. M. E. and similar societies have their greatest usefulness. . . . Individuals and companies acting alone in the development of public opinion are merely voices crying in the wilderness. United and organized they make a great force that can and does influence public action. . . . What part, if any, then, shall the A. I. M. E. take in these great stabilization processes of civilization? Shall it help to give direction and force to scientific knowledge which comes within its field of activity or shall it merely develop more of it? . . . Is it the A. I. M. E.&apos;s function to help bring system, order and direction out of this situation so that the world can again have forward economic movement, or should it rest on its oars until other agenciess develop that public understanding and direction so necessary for economic progress? As we understand the functions of the A. I. M. E. Petro¬leum Division, they are to discover and promote knowl¬edge for the benefit of society on the mining of oil and gas. To the individual member of the Petroleum Division, there are certain advantages of social and professional contacts, but the collective purpose is that described. And the individual is benefited by membership only as the Division measures up to the purposes of its existence. Consequently, the welfare of this Division and that of its members depends on the extent to which it keeps pace with the needs of society on matters relating to the mining of oil and gas.

THE history of the development of our great iron and steel industry has been recorded in many publications, not the least important of which are the TRANSACTIONS of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. During the life of the Institute, of less than 60 years, the annual production of pig iron in the United States has increased more than 23 times. Such a rate of growth may seem small when compared with that of the automotive industry, which has increased 100 times in the last 20 years, or when compared with the growth of other industries of recent birth. The comparison appears less unfavorable, however, when the fact is taken into consideration that the iron and steel industry has existed on the earth in some form for thousands of years. The trade journals, the Department of Commerce and technical societies keep us currently informed concerning technical and corporate developments and the statistics of the American iron and steel industry. Merely to describe the high spots of the industry as it exists today would require a book of no small size. It involves the utilization of about 900,000 people, the payment of $1,400,000,000 in annual wages and salaries, the-investment of $14,000,000,000, the mining annually of 70,000,000 tons of iron ore, 15,000,000 tons of limestone, and 120,000,000 tons of coal. It results in the production of 40,000,000 long tons of pig iron and 50,000,000 long tons of steel ingot. In addition, the industry includes ownership and operation of railroads and steamship lines, the production of cement, timber, coke, gas, by-products, and many other activities. The leading part played by the iron and steel industry in promoting the confidence of the public in corporations and corporate management is well known. The industry has also provided worthy examples of vertical integration and mass production. The social activities within the industry have been no small factor in promoting the fuller development and greater happiness of the American working man-and his family. As a practicing mining engineer, I face many rock mechanics&apos; problems daily and would like to mention one or two examples to illustrate the current gap between laboratory investigations and actual field problems. I would like to endorse Dr. Obert&apos;s suggestion that more field measurements and observations should be undertaken. There is an ever-increasing body of data beginning with Hast&apos;s results in Sweden,l then measurements at Elliot Lake, Canada, and so on, including our own measurements at White Pine, which clearly indicate that the horizontal stresses underground are often at least as large as the vertical stresses. Visual obsenation of the deformation of roof and pillars (including failure due to horizontal compression) also demonstrates that the horizontal stresses are often most important. Yet almost every laboratory investigation begins with the assumption that the only stresses acting are vertical. Roof spans in layered formations. for example, are calculated on the assumption that the rock behaves as a gravity loaded beam. This is all too often unrealistic. Roof bolts are also often considered to be simply means of suspending the gravity loaded beams. As Dr. Reed has mentioned they are probably, in fact, acting to restrain a beam which is attempting to buckle due to lateral pressure. The fact that moisture can reduce the strengths of some rocks as much as 50 percent has been known for many years. In the mine me are almost always faced with wet rock, yet no one has investigated ways in which this wakening effect can be overcome. as, for example, by waterproofing the rock. C. Fairhurst, University of Minnesota I would like to mention that we have found,2 from stress-relief determinations, that appreciable (over 1000 lb per sq in.) horizontal pressures occur also at the surface in granites quarried in central Minnesota. Whilst I agree that more field measurements are desirable, it is important to point out that most university research is undertaken by graduate students who must attend classes daily. Their research is therefore restricted to the laboratory. A.M. Starfield, University of Minnesota No one denies the importance of obtaining: data from field measurements. It is equally important, however, that field measurements be guided by theory. Much time and money can be wasted by indiscriminate measurement. An example of the value of theory in interpreting measurements is given in Dr. Obert&apos;s comments on the time dependent strain observed in a salt mine. He anticipated that the stress at the wall of the opening would change with time because salt is viscoelastic rather than elastic. DISCUSSION I. M. Symonds, (Cia. Minera de Penoles, Monterrey, N. L., Mexico)—Messrs. Boeke and Gunther have written most interesting papers describing their zinc de-leading operations. Mr. Gunther was kind enough to show me his operation last fall. Aside from the excellent results, I was most impressed by the ease of control. I had expected a difficult operation requiring careful control and supervision, but found one requiring little attention. The only disappointing fact of the separation is the poor copper recovery in the concentrate of the delead-ing float. The final zinc concentrate still has about 3 pct chalcopyrite, assuming the copper is chalcopyrite, and adversely affects the zinc grade. If the copper mineral is free, the poor recovery is probably due to the high cyanide concentration. Fortunately, about 75 pct of the copper is recovered before the pulp goes to the zinc circuit. Mr. Gunther&apos;s remarks about proper cyanide to zinc sulphate ratios cannot be overemphasized. Although our experience has been confined mostly to the conventional lead-zinc separation, we have found these ratios most important, and more important in the mill than in the laboratory. The laboratory appears to give optimum results over a wider range of reagent control than the mill, especially in regard to the effect of cyanide. In handling relatively high grade ores in the mill we usually find that ratios of cyanide to zinc sulphate of 1 to 10 or 20 or higher work best. Where there is a substantial amount of chalcopyrite present it has been noted that cyanide in the range of 0.02 to 0.10 lb per ton of ore is often beneficial in zinc rejection and possibly in copper recovery in the lead concentrate, while larger amounts, say 0.20 to 0.25 lb per ton, will float more zinc and cause a serious rejection of chalcopyrite. On an ore with 15 to 20 pct zinc content we have had to use 0.8 to 1.2 pounds of zinc sulphate per ton of ore with the above cyanide to obtain optimum results. Some time ago we made a laboratory study following Parral and Santa Barbara practice on an ore which had never a very satisfactory rejection of zinc in the lead concentrate. The results were not encouraging and a mill test was not run. Since then the study has been reopened using in the laboratory fresh zinc concentrate from the mill instead of one made in the laboratory. A reasonably clean lead float from the zinc concentrate was obtained. It has been checked several times and each time the zinc concentrate made in the mill responds and the one made in the labora-

DISCUSSION I. M. Symonds, (Cia. Minera de Penoles, Monterrey, N. L., Mexico)—Messrs. Boeke and Gunther have written most interesting papers describing their zinc de-leading operations. Mr. Gunther was kind enough to show me his operation last fall. Aside from the excellent results, I was most impressed by the ease of control. I had expected a difficult operation requiring careful control and supervision, but found one requiring little attention. The only disappointing fact of the separation is the poor copper recovery in the concentrate of the delead-ing float. The final zinc concentrate still has about 3 pct chalcopyrite, assuming the copper is chalcopyrite, and adversely affects the zinc grade. If the copper mineral is free, the poor recovery is probably due to the high cyanide concentration. Fortunately, about 75 pct of the copper is recovered before the pulp goes to the zinc circuit. Mr. Gunther&apos;s remarks about proper cyanide to zinc sulphate ratios cannot be overemphasized. Although our experience has been confined mostly to the conventional lead-zinc separation, we have found these ratios most important, and more important in the mill than in the laboratory. The laboratory appears to give optimum results over a wider range of reagent control than the mill, especially in regard to the effect of cyanide. In handling relatively high grade ores in the mill we usually find that ratios of cyanide to zinc sulphate of 1 to 10 or 20 or higher work best. Where there is a substantial amount of chalcopyrite present it has been noted that cyanide in the range of 0.02 to 0.10 lb per ton of ore is often beneficial in zinc rejection and possibly in copper recovery in the lead concentrate, while larger amounts, say 0.20 to 0.25 lb per ton, will float more zinc and cause a serious rejection of chalcopyrite. On an ore with 15 to 20 pct zinc content we have had to use 0.8 to 1.2 pounds of zinc sulphate per ton of ore with the above cyanide to obtain optimum results. Some time ago we made a laboratory study following Parral and Santa Barbara practice on an ore which had never a very satisfactory rejection of zinc in the lead concentrate. The results were not encouraging and a mill test was not run. Since then the study has been reopened using in the laboratory fresh zinc concentrate from the mill instead of one made in the laboratory. A reasonably clean lead float from the zinc concentrate was obtained. It has been checked several times and each time the zinc concentrate made in the mill responds and the one made in the labora-

A simple reproducible method was developed for determining the ignition temperatures of magnesium and magnesium alloys and by this method magnesium and over 100 magnesium alloys were measured. The ignition temperature of magnesium was determined in O2-SO2, O2-N2 mixtures and in O2 from 0.166 to 10 atm pressure. The ignition temperature of magnesium is generally lowered by alloying and increased by an increase in oxygen pressure. WITH the expanded use of magnesium alloys in industry, ignition temperatures are of considerable importance, especially in heat treating and for service at elevated temperatures. Magnesium alloys exhibit a relatively slow linear oxidation rate up to temperatures near the melting point.&apos; At some critical temperature the rate of oxidation becomes extremely rapid. This high rate of oxidation is accompanied by the emission of light and additional characteristics suggesting a flame. The literature concerning the ignition temperatures of magnesium and magnesium alloys is relatively incomplete and the values reported by various authors are not in agreement. The most probable reasons for this are: 1—The absence of a suitable definition of ignition, and 2—the need of a standardized method of determining the ignition temperatures of inflammable metals and alloys. The exact date of the discovery of the fact that magnesium will ignite and burn is unknown. It is likely that H. Davey encountered this property of the metal during its preparation in 1808. The first reference in the literature specifically on ignition of magnesium is by Lenze, Metz, and Rubens.&apos; They investigated the inflammability of certain magnesium alloys. Brown3-&apos; reported that magnesium ribbon will ignite in air at 507 °C by what was called the rising temperature method. Hartman, Nagy, and Brown" reported that magnesium powder ignites from 475" to 560°C depending on particle size. According to Guise, Mars, and Wilson prolonged heating in air at 427°C of common casting magnesium alloy causes it to ignite. Samples of magnesium alloys were placed directly in the flame of a torch by Carapella and Shaw.&apos; These investigators obtained some evidence of melting prior to ignition. For commercial magnesium, they reported an ignition temperature of 650°C. Their values varied from 450" to 800°C for magnesium alloys. Willmore and Peterson" studied the effect of air velocity, humidity, rate of heating, and foreign metal contact on the ignition temperature of magnesium. They conclude that melting is not a prerequisite for ignition and that the conditions which influence ignition are complex and difficult to analyze. The literature on the beneficiation of serpentine asbestos ore states that the specific gravity of the rock containing fiber and the fiber itself is the same so that specific gravity cannot be used as a basis for separation. An investigation of particles of asbestos ore ranging in size from 4 mesh to 5 in. revealed that the fiber-bearing particles generally had a lower specific gravity compared to essentially barren particles. The difference in specific gravity was sufficient to make an effective gravity separation of ore particles and reject a low grade tailings product. The results of laboratory tests are described that lead to the running of pilot plant tests with 20-ton ore samples using a heavy media separator. These tests indicated that a large amount of low grade material could be rejected from the raw ore at a coarse size. Although the process used is a wet separation, it can be added to a conventional dry asbestos mill. A gravity preconcentration would allow the mining of lower grade ore, increase the life of the mine, increase the value of the feed to the fiber recovery section, and decrease maintenance costs by removal of low grade tailings early in the flowsheet.
