The orebodies of Gibraltar Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) are located on the western slope of Granite Mountain, central British Columbia. The area in and around Gibraltar Mines has a moderate topographic relief with elevations between 3500 and 4100 ft. The property is 95% covered by overburden which varies in depth from a few feet to 230 ft. Early History and Geology The present Gibraltar Mines property before amalgamation consisted of the Pollyanna property (Duval-Canex) and the Gibraltar property (original Gibraltar Mines) as well as some Coast Silver and McLeese Lake Copper claims.

IT SEEMS particularly appropriate that the Institute's Regional Meeting should be held in Minnesota this year. Whether we like it or not, we cannot help looking at things now in the light of the World War and the all-out effort we, as a nation, are making to defend our resources, our institutions, and our way of life. The ability to do this lies in large measure in the ability to forge weapons of defense-the machines of war. The basic ingredients of any defense system, or war machine, are the raw materials of industry-iron ore, providing steel for guns, shells, tanks, and warships; coal for stoking the nation's furnaces; oil to furnish power for war planes, ships, trucks, and mechanized weapons; and all the other materials that play a vital role in the operation of modern armies and navies. The tremendous requirements of full-scale defense programs are indicated by the large number of commodities that are now under priorities because the supply is not sufficient to meet both defense needs and all normal civilian consumption. But out of all these items two are of paramount importance-steel and petroleum. In this age no nation can hope to main¬tain a position as a first-class power in the world without a highly developed industry, particularly the heavy industries based on steel, and without access to the necessary resources for those industries. In 1918, 70 per cent of the iron and steel production of the United States was required for defense purposes. In 1940, 15 per cent of our iron and steel production was consumed for defense purposes, and with the acceleration of the defense program, it appears that the proportion of steel output required for defense purposes will reach 40

At the Wilkes-Barre Meeting of the Institute, Dr. J. Lawrence Smith, in the course of his remarks on some peculiarities in the composition of irons, alluded to the so-called " bucltshot" iron, and exhibited a specimen of this material. He said that when the small granules, or shot, were separatetl from the mass, they could be flattencd under the hammer, and inferred that these particles had been decarburized by the blast before sinking into the hearth of the furnace, and thus we had the exceptional production of wrought iron in the blast furnace. I have recently obtained a characteristic specimen of this variety of iron from one of the furnaces at Orbisona, Pa. Considerable uncertainty existed as to its true nature and the conditions of its production. Its weight seemed to preclude the idea that it containetl much or any slag, yet its lack of strength indicated that it was not homogeneous cast iron. At times considerable quantities had been produced, which could only be utilized by charging in the furnace and remelting. The specimen, on the freshly fractured surfacc, appeared to consist of flattened globules of iron cemented together by a bluish material which one would naturally suppose to be slag, and qualitative examination for lime strengthened this supposition. It was quite difficult to obtain drillings, as there was a tendency to split in several directions as soon as pressure mas applied; but enough was obtained to undertaltc quantitative determinations. They were found to consist of two portions—one attracted by the magnet, and the other not. By repeated separation the magnetic portion was found to be 94.44 per cent., and the non-magnetic 5.56 per cent. Analyses of these gave the following results: Magnetic Portion. Non-magnetic Portion. TITANIUM is estimated to be the ninth most plentiful element, ranking after iron, aluminum, and magnesium, and ahead of copper, lead, and zinc. Vast quantities of titanium are widespread throughout the world in ore deposits and beach sands. Before the war, processing plants were operated in England, France, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Norway, Russia, Australia, United States, and Japan. In spite of its widespread occurrence, however, the U. S. Department of Justice has held the titanium industry to be a world monopoly and action was taken in the Federal court during the summer of 1945 to enjoin international patent and marketing agreements and to restore free competition. Possibly the rather surprising lack of public familiarity with this industry of international importance arises from its astonishingly rapid development and growth in the strong hands of some of the greatest chemical companies in the world, including the important foreign companies, Imperial Chemical Industries (British), Montecatini (Italian), I. G. Farben (German), and Titan Kogko Kabushiki Kaisha (Japanese). The rapid growth of the titanium industry in the United States is indicated by a tenfold increase of ore imports in the 1930 to 1940 decade before the war began to affect shipments from overseas. The fact that the industry formerly derived practically all ore for chemical processing in American plants from foreign sources probably also accounts for lack of general public knowledge of titanium. In 1939, to meet the requirements of increasing demand for the white pigment. titanium dioxide, more than 250,000 tons of titanium concentrates moved to this country, principally from the Travancore coast of India where the ilmenite concentrate from the beach sand runs as high as 60 per cent in titanium dioxide. Global warfare put a stop to shipping and thus gave rise to the development of titanium mining on a substantial scale in the United States during 1941.

The national and international importance of Canada's minerals and metals producing industry is reported. The growth of the Canadian industry is traced from 1945, through the period of rapid development of the early 1950's, to the consolidation and expansion activities of the late 1950's and early 1960's. Mineral production in Canada during 1963-including steel, nonferrous metals, and fuels -is reported. It is estimated that by 1970 the Canadian industry will produce $3.9 billion worth of metals, nonmetals, and fuels.

On January 9, 1964, the molybdenite extraction circuit at the San Manuel concentrator was switched from the sodium hypochlorite-ferracyanide process to the present process described in this paper. This moment was the culmination of over three years of laboratory and pilot plant test work. COPPER CONCENTRATOR Even though San Manuel's molybdenite plant begins with the thickened copper concentrates, it is necessary to describe briefly the copper sulfide circuit, because San Manuel's excellent molybdenite recovery actually begins with the primary grinding of the ore.

Belle Isle, located in the low sea marshes near Atchafalaya Bay, is the southeasternmost of the famous Five Salt Islands of Louisiana. Rising about 80 ft. (24 m.) above the level of the surrounding marsh and being some 800 acres (323 ha.) in extent, it constitutes a striking landmark on the low Gulf coast, and since the eighteenth century, when it played an important part in the operation of the buccaneers, it has been intermittently frequented by man. In 1897, the writer discovered the great mass of salt that underlies the island and shortly afterward published a brief account of the geology of Belle Isle and the neighboring salt islands.' In that paper he described principally the salt, but pointed out also the occurrence of petroleum and of sulphur in the strata above the salt. Since that time the island has been extensively explored by the drill, and the developments up to 1908 have been described by Veatch2 and Harris13 and Knapp.4 The writer's early conclusions as to the probable presence of sulphur in considerable quantity have been confirmed by the later drilling, some of the wells having found quantities of gas containing hydrogen sulphide and a number of sulphur-bearing strata as well. Under the stimulus of the present keen demand for sulphur for war purposes, a syndicate of New York capitalists was recently formed to explore the sulphur resources of the island in more detail. Under the writer's direction, six wells were drilled for this syndicate during the winter of 1916-17: The present paper presents briefly the results of this work and sums up the present knowledge of the geology of this highly interesting locality.

In estimating the unmined petroleum reserves of Central America, it is not feasible to employ the methods that have been worked out in thc oil fields of the United States. No producing wells have been brought in and no drilling sections have been made public. It is accordingly necessary to fall back on a crude "barrels per square mile" estimate. The method chosen is a comparison of the structure of the foreign field of unknown reserves with that of some supposedly analogous North American field of which the reserves have been estimated. This method makes no pretense at scientific accuracy, but furnishes a working basis for an estimate. The areal geology of Central America is illustrated in the inap prepared by Sapper and more recently in the geologic map of North America accompanying U. S. Geological Survey Professional Paper No. 71, "Index to the stratigraphy of North America." Disregarding for the present the narrow Quaternary coastal plains and alluvial deposits of the river valleys, three chief zones may be distinguished. These arc: A zone of late eruptive and effusive rocks; a zone of highly folded prr-Cambrian(?) or early Paleozoic crystalline schists and slates, considerably intruded by pre-Tertiary plutonic rocks; and a zone of more or less folded sediments, chiefly of Cretaceous or Tertiary age. The zone of late eruptive and effusive rocks of Central America begins in southeastern Chiapas, Mexico, and extends, with increasing breadth, across southern Guatemala, across practically the whole of El Salvador, and across southern Honduras to the valley of Rio Goascorhn, where the igneous zone attains a width of about 100 mi. (160 km.) East of the Goascordn Valley late eruptives and effusives play a subordinate part, being confined largely to thc Departments of Valle and Choluteca. Dikes and sills of igneous rocks intrude the sedimentary formations of central and northern Honduras. Late igneous rocks cover about four-fifths of the area of Nicaragua. In Costa Rica, late igneous rocks form the diagonal ranges of the Sierra de Guanacaste and the Cordillma Central, and play a part in the upbnild-

SUPPLEMENTING surveys of the engineering profession regarding salaries and advancement, based upon data from individual engineers, a survey through a questionnaire to employers of engineers has recently been made by a subcommittee of the Engineers Joint Council's Committee on the Economic Status of the Engineer. Its object was to learn directly from employers their attitudes and policies pertaining to the selection, training, placement, advancement, guidance, and professional activities of engineering graduate employes. The questionnaire was sent in May 1946 to 174 employers of engineers, including colleges. Replies were received from 104 employers in nineteen fields of industry, who employ about 2,000,000 persons, about 40,000 of whom are engineers. The following general observations are based on the questionnaires returned. Who Are Hired? Of the co-operators 96 per cent employ cadet engineers directly upon graduation from engineering schools, but only 4 per cent recruit their engineering staffs exclusively from the new graduates. About 43 per cent hire more than half of their new engineer employes after one or more years' experience with other employers. This is evidently a matter of necessity or expediency rather than preference, because more than sixty per cent of those reporting indicate that they prefer to hire the new graduate.

METAL-ORGANIC INNER COMPLEXES AN inner complex is a cyclic chemical structure containing an inorganic cation that is bound simultaneously to several atoms in a single organic molecule; on the one hand by means of ordinary valence bonds (electron exchange), on the other hand through the action of the electric field thus created, which satisfies the so-called secondary valences. The relative positions of the salt-forming and complex-forming groups are such that most frequently a four, five, or six-membered ring results through this double attachment of the cation.1-6 The formation of inner-complex ring systems depends not only upon the nature and suitable position of the salt-forming and complex-forming groups for ring closure, but, to a great extent, also on the nature of the metallic cation entering the reaction. This selective character of chelate-forming organic compounds is one of their most interesting and most valuable properties. As a matter of fact, the largest number of their practical applications is based upon their specificity. 4,1-13 Once a chelate compound is formed, its character is definitely "organic" in nature. In other words, its properties are conditioned to a much larger degree by the carbon chains or rings than by the metallic atom. Many inner complexes are soluble in nonpolar solvents such as benzene, paraffin oil or carbon tetrachloride, while the chelate-forming reagent before closure of the metal-organic ring is water soluble. (Example: copper complex of salicyl-aldoxime.) It is obvious that such particular properties as those indicated above can be utilized whenever specificity and practically complete binding of inorganic ions into an undissociable complex are required. One of the well-known applications of chelate-forming compounds has been the development of specific reagents in analytical chemistry,, creation of the spot-test method,4,14-16 and the application of the same principles to the contact print method for determining minerals.17 CHELATE-FORMING COMPOUNDS AS COLLECTORS In the field of flotation, where selectivity is often a quality of paramount importance for the collector, various workers have lately attempted to apply their knowledge of specific organic analytical reagents to this purpose. A. C. Vivian18 has concentrated cassiterite by using ammonium nitrosophenylhydroxylamine (Cupferron) C6H5NO(=NONH4). Holman19 has tested dimethylglyoxime for the flotation of nickel oxide minerals, while deWitt has shown in a series of systematic experiments that alpha-dioximes were generally selective collectors for nickel ores. Taurin NH2(CH2)2SO3H has been proposed for the concentration of oxidized lead ores.19 Diphenylthiocarbazone

THERMAL expansion coefficients of a uranium were originally reported' on the basis of X-ray diffraction measurement of lattice constants at 25°, 300°, and 650°C. These data have been reproduced by Katz and Rabinowitch.' CuK radiation had been used in this work, with consequent crowding of the patterns. Considerable overlap of the back-reflection lines was observed as the temperature was raised. Subsequent reexamination of the data led to the conclusion that errors had resulted from failure to obtain unequivocal indexing of the high angle reflections at elevated temperatures. The measurements have been repeated, using FeK radiation, which provided sufficient dispersion to assure proper indexing of the reflections, at each temperature level. The unit cell dimensions were re-determined at ten temperatures, from 25" to 650°C. Schuch and Laquer easured the macroscopic contraction from room temperature down to —253°C, and reported a negative value from —210" to —253°C; they suggested the possibility of the occurrence of a phase change. In the present work, the lattice constants of uranium have been measured down to —253°C, to test this hypothesis. Filings were prepared from a single piece of pure uranium bar stock. They were carefully cleaned with a magnet and pickled in nitric acid to remove traces of iron from the file. They were then annealed at 600°C in a sealed evacuated silica tube. The annealed filings were pickled in strong nitric acid to remove any oxide layer, washed in water and alcohol, quickly dried, and sealed in evacuated thin-walled silica capillary tubes. If properly sealed, the sample could be heated to the a-ß transforination temperature without significant buildup of the diffraction pattern of oxide. The high temperature X-ray diffraction camera was modified from the design of Hume-Rothery and Reynolds.' The thermocouple used to record the specimen temperature was calibrated from lattice-constant measurements of a standard silver specimen, using the Hume-Rothery and Reynolds values for silver over the temperature range from 25" to 700°C. Temperatures were reproducible to 210°C. Temperatures to —210°C were attained by passing precooled gas over the sample. The gas from the cooling train was directed over the sample capillary tube and thermocouple by means of a chimney of 1-mil polystyrene. The 36-gage Cu-constantan thermocouple had been calibrated by

Heteroepitaxy of silicon on stoichiometric spinel has been studied. Both boron-doped (p-type) and arsenic-doped (n-type) single-crystal silicon films have been grown by the pyrolysis of silane on sioichiometric spinel (MgAl2O4) substrates prepared by a flux technique. The spinel crystals are free from strain and subgrains, and exhibit no thermal instability at temperatures employed for silicon deposition. The growth parameters of epitaxial silicon have been studied. Effects of substrate orientation, surface preparation, and growth conditions on the silicon Properties have been determined. The silicon-spinel composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, electron microscopy, and optical techniques. Information on epitaxial orientation relationship, defect structures and film-substrate interface has been obtained. A parallel orientation relationship was found between silicon and spinel. The silicon films exhibit no subgrain structures. However, growth pyramids, microtwins, stacking faults, and dislocations are the prevalent defects. The deformation of epitaxial silicon was measured by an X-ray technique. It was found that the epitaxial silicon is strained under compres-sive stress due to the thermal expansion difference between the film and substrate. The stress was estimated using the classical plate theory and beam equation. Electrical properties of the epitaxial silicon have been measured, including resistivity, carrier concentration, and Hall mobility. MIS and vertical through diffused junction structures have been fabricated wing silicon-spinel composite. Information on MIS characteristics, minority carrier life time, and junction properties has been obtained. THE achievement of single-crystal growth of large area silicon semiconductor films on oxide insulating substrates is of technical importance to many solid state electronic devices. The semiconductor-insulator composite structure is also of scientific interest because the heteroepitaxy is determined by the spatial relationship between the atomic arrangement in the substrate and that of the atoms in the appropriate crystallographic plane of silicon. The degree of crystalline perfection of the silicon deposits depends also on the physical condition of substrate surface. Epitaxial growth of silicon on commercial flame fusion Al-rich spinel (MgO:3.3A12O3) has been reported by several investigators.'-4 The lattice of spinel of this composition is distorted. The material cracks and exsolves the excess alumina in the lattice at temperatures (-1200°C) used in fabricating silicon devices. Stoichiometric MgA12O4 spinel exhibits neither lattice distortion nor thermal instability. Results are given on the epitaxial growth and characterization of silicon on stoichiometric spinel. EXPERIMENTAL Fabrication of Silicon-Spinel Composite Structures. The MgA12O4 spinel substrate wafers were prepared from bulk single crystals grown at about 1200°C by a flux technique5 using a PbF2 flux. The crystals are free from strain and subgrains, and exhibit a typical dislocation density of less than 50 lines per sq cm. The crystals are thermally stable without cracking and exsolution of alumina to at least 1500°C. The spinel crystals were oriented for cutting by the Laue X-ray back-reflection method.6 Substrate wafers (about 25 mil thick) of (Ill), (loo), and (110) orientations have been obtained bu cutting the X-ray oriented crystals using a standard type diamond wheel. An accuracy of better than 1/2 deg is maintained throughout the operation. The spinel substrate wafers were mechanically lapped and polished to produce the flat and smooth surface which is required for silicon epitaxy. Lapping was carried out with about 30-µ boron carbide abrasives to obtain a flat coplanar surface. The lapped surface was further polished using successively finer grades of alumina, ending with the 0.3-µ grade. After polishing the wafers generally have a flatness of ±0.4 µ per cm, as revealed by interferometry. Fig. 1 shows (111) oriented MgA12O4 spinel wafers of various shapes.

IN an earlier paper by Sims, Moore, and Williams: data were given to show that hydrogen contents of 0.3 relative volume (0.00033 wt pct), existing at the center of 4-in.-square cast-steel coupons, could be removed by aging at 400°F for 125 hr. At the end of that time, complete restoration of normal ductility for the steel was obtained. Replicate specimens of the same steel were aged at room temperature up to 555 days or .18 1/2 months. At the end of that time, the hydrogen content at the center had fallen to 0.13 relative volume or 0.00015 wt pet, but there was no perceptible change in the ductility. On the basis of experience with accelerated aging of 1-in. and 4-in. coupons and room temperature aging of 1-in. coupons, it was predicted that, some time after two years and when the hydrogen content has been reduced to about 0.10 relative volume, there would be some recovery of ductility. One set of three bars remained, and these were held for 1310 days, or more than three years. Then tensile test bars were cut from the center, and these bars were sampled for hydrogen analysis at the time they were broken. The sample specimens were cylinders % in. in diam x 1 1/4 in. in length. The data showed that in this time the average hydrogen content had fallen to 0.096 relative volume or 0.00011 wt pct, and the ductility had increased sharply. Elongation had risen from 10 to 17.3 pct, while reduction of area increased from about 16 to 27.5 pct. On the basis of these data, fig. 1 was drawn to replace fig. 15 of the earlier paper. Extrapolation of the curves of fig. 1 indicates that it would require a period of about 2200 days or approximately six years at room tem- perature to reduce the hydrogen to the minimum value and to recover full ductility in the center of the coupons. The aging process apparently involves the movement of hydrogen from the interior to the surface of the bar and evaporation at the surface. This flux of gas presumably follows some diffusion mechanism, and an effort was made to use the aging data, obtained at room temperature and at 400°F, to calcu-late coefficients of diffusion, in the hope that they might indicate the nature of the diffusion. The conclusion was reached. however. that the data were inadequate for such a purpose.

A formation tester run on logging cable is now available to the oil industry. It offers a method of safely and rapidly testing possible producing formations in uncased holes. These tests can be made up the hole after running the electric log. Reservoir pressure data is continuously recorded at the surface as the fluid sample is extracted. The tester may be assembled with a reservoir of 1-, 2.75-, or 5.5-gal capacity. A retaining pad on the body of the tool is expanded against the wall of the hole at the exact depth desired; this depth is determined by electrical log control. Two bullets are then fired through the center of the retaining pad which create a connection between the formation and a flow line to the sample chamber. When the chamber is filled, a valve is closed and the fluid sample sealed at maximum pressure. The tool is retracted to minimum diameter and brought out of the hole. Electrical circuits permit a complete recording at the surface of the mechanical operations of the tool as well as the formation pressure build-up and the hydrostatic mud pressure. The tool was introduced commercially during the latter part of 1955 in the Gulf Coasts of Louisiana and Texas. Over 1,000 operations have been made to date (Sept. 1, 1956); 50 per cent of which resulted in successful tests. Failures have been due mostly to ineffective sealing in unconsolidated sands. One major company had 41 successful tests out of 80 attempts with 23 ineffective pad seals. Results for this company were very gratifying as to pinpointing gas-oil ratios, indicating productive permeabilities and aiding in determination of fluid content where electrical log and side-wall coring information were inconclusive. Eight typical pressure curves are discussed (including misruns). Six types of fluid recoveries are interpreted. Eight actual field examples of electric logs, showing the problems solved by the formation tester, are illustrated. The present applications of the tool are discussed: 1. Determination of productive fluid—varticularlv differentiating between gas and oil. 2. Determination of reservoir pressure as an aid to: (a) safety in completion technique, (b) reduction in drilling costs, and (c) reservoir analysis. 3. Determination of minimum gas-oil ratios. 4. Location of gas-oil or oil-water contacts. 5. Recovery of samples for examination and analysis: oil (gravity); gas (hydrocarbon content); water (salinity). Additional applications envisioned for the future are also given: (I) subsurface exploration based on accurate pressure, (2) recovery of fluid samples from the undisturbed reservoir for PVT work, and (3) possible quantitative study of permeabilities or productivity index. Running the formation tester requires no special pre-cautionary measures. Because full hydrostatic mud pressure is maintained at all times, well depth is no problem. Thus, the method allows safe, economical testing in wells which heretofore could only be tested by setting casing. INTRODUCTION A new method of safely and rapidly testing possible producing formations in uncased holes is achieving considerable success. The method offers promise of further advances in reservoir study. Called the formation tester, the new instrument is unique in that it operates on logging cable. It thus offers all the advantages of wire-line operations and becomes an important adjunct to present logging and side-wall coring services. The tester is operated against the wall of the hole at any depth desired. Zones to be tested are usually determined by a study of the electrical and the micro-caliper surveys. Reservoir data, as well as the operating cycle of the tool in the hole, are continuously recorded at the surface during the operation. The tester, as it was originally designed, was capable of recovering a 1-gal sample of reservoir fluid per trip in the hole. Tools with reservoirs of 2.75- and 5.5-gal capacity are now available. The 5.5-gal reservoir is equipped with a segregating system, set before going in the hole, so that the last portion of the recovery (usually 1 gal) is automatically separated from the first portion. The site selected for this furnace was, at the time of commencing work, October, 1872, entirely covered by the navigable waters of Lake Champlain. A coffer-dam was first built of cribs of round timber filled with stone, forming three sides, while the shore answered for the fourth. Considerable excavating was done with a steam-dredge, a hole being left for it to pass out. The opening was then built up, and the cribbing banked up with blue clay from the bottom of the lake, to render it water-tight and the dam pumped out; the remainder of the excavating being done by hand. All of the foundations, with the exception of the elevator-tower, and fifteen feet of the east side of hot blast, rest on the Potsdam sandstone, which forms the shore line, dipping into the lake at an angle of fifteen degrees. Long experience with underground mining inspired the unusual idea of using an underground crusher-conveyor system as a substitute for surface haulage at the Cananea open-pit copper mine in Sonora, Mexico. Now implemented and working well, the system has born out the expectations of its originator, Cia. Minera de Cananea S.A. de C.V., that it would effect substantial cuts in the high cost of haulage. The Cananea deposit is a large, low-grade orebody above the mined-out Colorada pipe which was once one of the largest high-grade underground deposits in the district. Present facilities at the pit consist of: (1) A large open-pit mine capable of moving 80,000 tons of material per day with a shovel-truck, underground crusher and belt conveyor haulage system. (2) A 25,000-tpd concentrator equipped for four stages of crushing, rod mill-ball mill grinding with cyclone classification, and flotation in conventional machines. (3) A dump leaching process producing 1 million lb of copper per month in a tin-can scrap precipitation plant. (4) A two-reverberatory, six-converter smelter which can make 140 tons of blister copper per day. (5) A well-integrated contingent of supporting departments running the gauntlet from housing to power generation.

To /neet the need for a subsurface flowmeter capable of measuring low rates of flow, a new type flowmeter has been built and tested in the field. This instrument is self-contairzed, can be run on a wire measuritzg line, and may be run through 2-in tubing. It consists of a rotameter flow-measuring assembly used in conjuncfion with a conventional subsurface instrument clock and chart. Integral with the tool is an inflatable packer which, by effecting a seal between casing and tool, diverts all fluid through the metering assembly. Packers of different size adapt the tool to different sizes of casing or liner. The flowmeter is capable of measuring rates of flow as low as 4 BID. The flowmeter has been run experimentally in seven wells. It has yielded satisfactory resrrlts in five of the wells, and in the other two it failed to operate because of loose sand in the hole. INTRODUCTION One of the oldest problems facing the producing branch of the petroleum industry is the location of depths of entry of fluid into a wellbore and the determination of the amount of fluid entering at each depth. This problem is often encountered in oil and gas wells completed in single producing horizons as well as in multiple pays; it is a common problem in oil wells which produce excessive volumes of gas. Several subsurface instruments designed to detect and meter flow in the producing interval of wells have been described in the literature.1,2,3,4 Most of these, however, were apparently intended for use in wells producing at relatively high rates of flow, and consequently lack sensitivity to low flow rates. Because of this and of other possible disadvantages inherent in these instruments, development of the subsurface flowmeter described in this report was undertaken. DESIGN OF FLOWME'I'ER Design Requirements In considering the requirements for a flowmeter that would not be subject to the limitations of devices existing at the time work was started, attention was first given to the size of the tool. Such an instrument should be of sufficiently small diameter that it could be lowered readily in 2-in tubing in a producing well. The flowmeter should contain a recording unit so that it might be run on a wire measuring line with conventional reeling equipment. It should not be too long to be accommodated by a portable lubricator of the type used for running conventional subsurface instruments. The metering mechanism of the flowmeter should not be affected appreciably by the viscosity or density of the flowing fluid. Such an instrument should record flow rates in the range from less than 10 B/D to over 100 B/D. To achieve this, a packer should he provided to divert through the instrument all fluid flow in the wellbore. This packer should be of such nature that in the event of excessive flow the fluid would bypass the instrument instead of forcing it up the wellhore. RECENTLY this laboratory undertook the task of preparing some low carbon metallic cobalt by the carbon reduction of precipitated cobalt oxides. The oxides came in two lots and had the compositions given in Table I. Industrially, cobalt rondels' are made by the carbon reduction of cobalt oxide in small reverberatory furnaces at temperatures near but not above 1050 °C. This is a slow and tedious small batch process but does give cobalt metal which is low in carbon (1 pct C). Inasmuch as these cobalt oxides were relatively low in copper and iron it was decided to reduce them with petroleum carbon in a small three-phase electric arc furnace of about 3 to 5 Ib of metal capacity. It was hoped such a procedure would save considerable time and perhaps also indicate an improved commercially feasible process. The furnace was preheated by using small pieces of carbon electrodes to maintain the arc until a temperature of 1500°C was reached. The broken pieces of electrodes were then removed and 500 g of the cobalt oxides and 60 to 100 g of petroleum coke added. At the end of the reduction reaction, a high lime flux was added to the furnace to facilitate the removal of sulphur. Due to the fineness of the cobalt oxide powder used and also to the presence of chlorides there was considerable dust lost in charging the furnace. This was overcome by preparing briquettes composed of the cobalt oxides, charcoal, and a little bentonite to serve as a binder. The results obtained are summarized in Table 11, which shows that the cobalt metal produced in the arc furnace was high in carbon varying from 2.5 to 3.5 pct. This, of course, is much too high. For certain uses, such as in the preparation of permanent magnets, the carbon content of cobalt must be low. It was necessary therefore to find an effective method of reducing the carbon content of the cobalt that had been prepared in the arc furnace. Van Arkel3 recommends the use of Co2O3 as a means of removing carbon from cobalt. Experiments by the authors indicate that carbon is removed with difficulty by this method. Other methods used, including lancing of the molten high carbon cobalt with a jet of oxygen, proved to be ineffective. The method finally used makes use of the fact that cobalt metal is decarburized by carbon dioxide at the temperature of the molten metal. Two methods were used: 1—carbon dioxide was bubbled up through the molten cobalt, and 2— molten cobalt was maintained in a carbon dioxide atmosphere. In the first method the gas was introduced below the surface of the molten metal by means of a quartz tube. A high frequency induction furnace was used to keep the cobalt molten in both of these experiments. This kept the metal somewhat agitated and no doubt was an important factor in hastening the decarburization 'process by the second method. Both methods gave satisfactory results as shown in Table 111. An interesting observation in connection with this 'work was that a small sample of carburized cobalt metal could be decarburized by heating it with an acetylene torch adjusted to give an oxidizing flame. This may have been due to the presence of carbon dioxide in the products of combustion. Samples of molten high carbon steel were decarburized by the same method and it is suggested that nickel and perhaps manganese can be decarburized in a similar manner. Additional work, including rate studies and other theoretical aspects of this problem, is in progress in this laboratory.
