Although Australia is the world's second biggest producer of iron ore, the last few years have not been easy for companies in Western Australia's Pilbara region (see map) where more than 90% of the nation's iron ore is produced. For at least two years, the industry has been plagued by dwindling markets abroad, production-crippling strikes at home, skyrocketing costs (well above the official 13% annual inflation rate), an acute shortage of investment capital, increasingly ferocious competition from foreign iron ore producers-and, as if all this weren't enough, by an over-valued currency that has caused incalculable damage not only to iron ore producers but to the entire mining industry of Australia. (This last problem was mitigated less than two months ago, on November 28, 1976, when the Australian dollar was devalued by a whopping 17 1/2%.)

FINLAND'S recent mining history is both dramatic and pitiful in its shifting fortunes, dominated as it has been, by the country's proximity to the border zone of opposing dictatorships and social traditions; Fascism to the south, Communism to the east, and Democracy to the west. After 108 years under Russia's more or less harsh rule, Finland gained its democratic independence during the 1917 revolutionary strife in Russia with the official help of Germany and spontaneous help of other neighbors. The young nation was attacked by Russia in 1939 and again in 1941. It is common knowledge how the Finns fought with everything they had and everything they could get against their overwhelming adversary, and how by force of circumstances they landed in the Axis camp in 1941. Finland has never been known as a mining country in the same way as near-by Sweden, whose abundant iron and copper smelters during long periods so greatly contributed to the nation's welfare. Its largely barren, Archaean-granite geology long seemed forbidding. Some mining was done, to be sure; copper and tin at Pitkaranta near the Russian border, and lead and copper at Orijarvi. But towards the end of the last century the absence of a single producing mine cast a pessimistic shadow of truth over the Finnish poet Runeberg's words, that

From its modest beginning in 1957 with one mill grinding section handling 3000 tpd Pima has steadily expanded. In July 1966, work was completed that allowed the concentrator to treat in excess of 18,000 tpd. Almost immediately Pima embarked on another expansion program that will increase plant capacity to 30,000 tpd during the summer of 1967. This repeated expansion has corresponded with the development of additional low-grade ore deposits and with the improved operating economics realized by handling larger masses of material. Early in the life of Pima it was known that a mineralized area was present on the flanks of the high-grade orebody which systematic drilling had shown to be a low-grade copper orebody. Many months of engineering studies revealed that this was sufficient to allow Pima to compete with other large scale, low-grade copper operations in the Southwest.

The principal events in the oil history of south Arkansas, north Louisiana and Mississippi in 1930 have been: In Arkansas, very little activity, except for discovery of deep oil production at Urbana, and completion of the first oil well in Miller County. In Louisiana, continued development of the Zwolle area, bringing production up to about 10,000 bbl. per day; practically complete development of the Carterville oil-producing area; discovery and drilling of the rather disappointing Holly area, and discovery of Trinity gas production at Sugar Creek, Claiborne Parish and Rodessa, Caddo Parish. In Mississippi, discovery of the Jackson gas field, in Hinds and Rankin counties. Proration of oil runs was not put in effect in these areas during 1930, because the natural decline of the older fields brought production below the demands of local markets. The only effect of the oversupply and low price of oil was the curtailment of some drilling which might otherwise have been done. Drilling in Arkansas reached the lowest stage since the discovery of oil, with less than 100 completions. Louisiana showed some increase in drilling over 1928 and 1929, but almost half of the wells were drilled primarily for gas rather than oil. As no review on north Louisiana production has been prepared since 1927, and there was none on south Arkansas for 1928, the developments of the three years, 1928, 1929 and 1930 are here briefly discussed.

QUALITY and size do not ordinarily go hand in hand, but there is good evidence that both these attributes reached a new peak at the Annual Meeting of the Institute in New York just concluded. Certainly, the total attendance of 2500 was far above any yet attained, as might be expected with the recent rapid growth of Institute member- ship. General comment indicates that the quality of the papers also was notable, though not measurable by so definite a yardstick as attendance. During the meeting 49 technical sessions were held, at which more than 250 formal papers were presented. In addition, there were some thirty special meetings of committees, Divisions, and other Institute groups. In reporting the Annual Meeting eleven years ago the statement was made that "unless the Engineering Societies should build for themselves a new building it is probable that no meeting can be larger," and "the fifth floor, where a buffet lunch is served each day, has reached its full capacity and it seems quite evident that any future development of Institute meetings must be along the lines of quality, not size." Unfortunately the angel to succeed Andrew Carnegie, who financed the building of the present home of the Institute 35 years ago, has not yet ' appeared. A galvanic cell, using as electrolyte a fused salt solution of calcium carbide and as electrodes carbon and a Fe-C alloy of known composition, has been set up to study the thermodynamics of Fe-C alloys in the temperature rmzge 800" to 1000°C. Time independence and reproducibility of the cell electromotive force were taken as evidence of the reversible behavior of the cell. Carbon was believed to be present in the electrolyte as the so-called acetylide ion, C;-. The plots of the cell electromotive force us temperature for a specific alloy composition were straight lines within the limits of experimental error. The average Partial molar enthalpy of carbon in iron relative to pure carbon was found to be +10,610 i 93 cal per g-atom C. Thermodynamic analysis of the data has led to the following equation for the carbon activity, ac, based upon pure carbon as the standard state: In ac = In Zc + 10,560/RT + (10.02 + 77O/T)ZC - 2.350 where ZC is the lattice ratio [nC/(nF, - nc )] and T is the absolute temperature. This equalion gives carbon activity values generally slightly lower than those from gas equilibration studies reported in the literature. METAL LOGRAPHIC examination of a polished cross section of the steel anode used in the electrolysis studies of fused salt solutions of calcium carbide by Morris and Harry revealed extensive carburization of the steel by the electrodeposited carbon. This carburization was reflected in the variability, with time, of the applied potential to the electrolysis cell, necessary to maintain a constant current density at the electrodes. This observation suggested the setting up of a galvanic cell of the "alloy concentration" type to study the thermodynamics of some metal-carbon alloys. Cells of this general type have been widely used for the study of alloy systems.2 In view of the availability of published data in respect of the austenite phase of the Fe-C system, it was decided to carry out measurements upon these alloys before proceeding to studies of less well documented systems. The galvanic cell may be written: where [C] is carbon dissolved in iron. The electrolyte was a fused salt solution of calcium carbide, containing some 5 to 10 mol pct of carbide. The cell reaction is believed to be: C(s)-[CI [I1 Carbon forms an interstitial solid solution in iron, with the atoms located in the octahedral interstices. In the fcc crystal structure of austenite there is one octahedral interstice per iron atom. Thus, the lattice ratio, ZC, shown by Gurney3 to be the fundamental concentration parameter in the context of interstitial solutions, is given by: where nc and nFe are the number of carbon and iron atoms, respectively. chipman4 has recently shown empirically the advantages of using this concentration parameter instead of the more usual atom ratio or atom fraction. The cell electromotive force, E, assuming reversible behavior, is related to the carbon potential or the partial molar free energy of carbon in the solid solution relative to pure carbon at the same temperature and pressure, GP at the composition ZC, by the equation: where z is the carbide ion valency and F is the Faraday constant. An activity of carbon, ac, in the solution relative to the value of unity assigned to pure carbon, and an activity coefficient, qC , are defined such that: where R is the gas constant and T the absolute temperature. GF is further related to the relative partial molar enthalpy Hm, and the temperature coefficient of the cell electromotive force, (aE/aT)Zc, by the equations: Measurement of the cell electromotive force thus enables calculation of the relative partial molar thermodynamic properties of carbon in iron, if z is known. At E = 0, the solid solution is in equilibrium with pure carbon. More convenient for many purposes is the standard state based upon the infinitely dilute solution, Henry's law. The relationship between the activity coefficient of carbon based upon this standard state, and that based upon the pure carbon standard state, qC , may be obtained by considering the free energy of transfer of carbon from the latter standard state to the former. Remarks Of Mr. Robert W. Hunt, General Superintendent, Albany And Rensselaer Iron And Steel Company., Troy N. Y. - In discussing Dr. Dudley's two most interesting papers, I feel a natural hesitancy in disagreeing with conclusions formed after such careful and conscientious work. But I think he has made his deductions from too meagre premises. The analyses of but twenty-five samples are entirely too few to justify the establishment of so important a formula. When we consider that he indirectly proposes to regulate an interest amounting, even at the present low prices, to over $20,000,000 per annum, we may well hesitate before accepting a formula based upon the chemical and physical analyses of but twenty-five steel rails. Dr. Dudley touches the keynote in referring to the proposed labors of the Government Test Commission. They based their hopes of attaining success upon the chemical and physical analyses of a very large number of samples, and in the only branch of investigation which the short-sighted policy of Congress has allowed them to complete, i.e., chain cables, we find that a dozen, twenty-five or one hundred tests gave no satisfactory results. It was only after many hundreds that they were enabled to draw conclusions. There are so many circumstances bearing upon the life of a rail, that the task of extracting a correct result seems herculean. I presume I am right in stating that in our Northern latitudes early winter and spring months witness the breaking of the greatest number of rails, thus seeming to prove that an unstable road-bed has much to answer for. Then, again, broken and flattened wheels must be taken into account, but I am convinced that more rails have been broken by the treatment which they received before leaving the rolling-mill * The remarks of the participants in this debate have been written out by the speakers, and are here given without any attempt to retain the order of the dis¬cussion. THE Committee on Elimination of Waste in industry came into existence from a speech in Washington by Mr. ,Hoover, in November, in which, he said: It is primary to mention the three-phase waste in production: first, from intermittent employment; second, from unemployment that arises in shifting of industrial currents; and third; from strikes and lockouts. Beyond this elimination of waste there is another field of progress in the adoption of measures for positive improvement in production.

FEDERAL regulation of the petroleum resources of the nation has long been an interesting topic for discussion. A plan to accomplish Federal control has now taken definite form. At the request of the President of the United States, a bill to be known as the Petroleum Conservation Act of 1939 has been presented to Congress-H. R. 7372, offered by Representative Wm. P. Cole, Jr., and more usually known as the Cole bill. It is an act ostensibly designed to conserve our petroleum resources, through regulation of production practices. Hearings are being held currently by a subcommittee of the Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee, in compliance with the request of the President to report the bill early in the next session of Congress.

A general relalionship between the amount of glide shear (due to slip) and the macroscopic shape change has been developed. Since the deformation can be large, finite strain analysis is employed. In this treatnzent, the shape change is expressed by a deformation gradient matrix, F - [axi/aXj1, where X and x refer to the initial and final positions of a particle. This matrix is readily evaluated in terms of the amounl of glide shear, a , and the direction cosines of the slip-plane normal and the slip direction for a single active slip system. In the case of deformation from slip on several systems, the product F(a) of the several deformation gradient matrices is first calculated. Then, by assuming that the final configuration is reached by a long series of small shears of magnitude a, occurring more or less alternately in the several slip sys- IN problems of crystal plasticity, it is often necessary to relate the amount of glide in the operating slip systems to the macroscopic strain components. This relationship is relatively simple when only small strains are considered. In this case the separate strain contributions from several slip systems are additive. Such a procedure is incorrect in the case of large plastic deformation. To the authors' knowledge, no general treatment of the latter problem has appeared in the literature. In specific instances, Mark, Polanyi, and schmid3 have derived the relationship between glide and axial elongation during tensile pulling of a single crystal when only one slip system is active. A similar relationship for duplex slip was worked out by v. Goler and Sachs.4 Taylor and Elam5 have also studied in detail problems of large plastic deformation. Due to uncertainties as to the slip systems at the time, terns, the final deformation gradient matrix can be obtained. Mathematically, the problem is reduced to finding the limit of F(dN as N — m while a — 0 in such a way that the Product Na = 0, a ftnite conslant designatzng the accunzulated amount of shear. It turns out that this limit is simply , where F, is the matrix whose elements are the coefficients of a in the F(a) matix. Application is made of the present treatment to a fcc crystal of Perlrzalloy compressed on the (110) plane and contrained to elongate zn the [112] directzon. In addition, it is shown that one rnay readily obtain from the general analyszs the well-known formulas relating elongation, amount of glide shear, and amount of lattice rotation for crystals deforming by single and double slip under tension. however, they were mainly concerned with proving that slip occurs on {111}(110) systems in fcc metals. The present general treatment arose out of recent investigations of magnetic anisotropy in cold-worked Fe-Ni alloys6 as well as some related problems in strength anisotropy of single crystals.' Detailed application of the general analysis will be provided in the case of a Permalloy single crystal compressed on the (110) plane and constrained to elongate only in the [112] direction. It will be seen that, as expected, the small strain approximation leads to significant errors after moderate straining. It will also be shown that the present general treatment yields the formulas of Mark et al. and of v. Goler and Sachs in those specific cases. A GOOD DEAL of information concerning flotation has come out during the patent litigation of recent years, and the legal situation has cleared considerably, to the satisfaction of Minerals Separation, Limited. Hence, Mr. H. Livingstone Sulman, one of the originators of the successful process of that company, felt at liberty to explain, on Thursday, Nov. 20, his experience and his views in a "Contribution to the Study of Flotation," before the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy. He did not give technical details. He dealt with the physical problems, so simple, as he remarked, that he had wanted 96 pages to express his views. He presented much data, partly new and based on observations of his own, bearing upon the very complex flotation phenomena in an instructive wav and made frequent references to the valuable researches especially of Prof. Edwin Edser and Mr. Emil Hatschek.

MUCH has been written and many prophecies made on the subject of plastics as a replacement for metal, and the extent to which these materials will compete with each other for peace- time markets. (Metal is used in a broad sense to include all types.) But although certain synthetic resin materials have made considerable headway in war production, this change to plastics can hardly be regarded as a serious threat to the mining and metallurgical industries. Even today, the total yearly tonnage of plastic materials is approximately only 1 per cent of that of steel, and only a small fraction of this might be considered as actually replacing steel. However, these figures must not be taken as indicating that the importance of plastics in fields hitherto considered exclusively the territory of metals is negligible-far from it. Considering the comparatively minute tonnage of plastics now being produced in comparison to the output of metals, the number of applications where plastics have augmented or aided the sale of metals is considerable.

AN analysis of the bituminous coal situation by an authority who traces the production, mining, safety, markets and labor trends in comparison with other fuels. BEFORE 1918 the production of coal experienced a steady growth, with slight recessions in ouput in only twelve years (1837, 1841, 1852, 1855, 1861, 1874, 1876, 1889, 1894, 1905, 1909, 1914), and in each of these cases the loss was recovered in the following year and the increase continued. In each decade the output was doubled. Prices, while not high, allowed some profit. In 1918 during World War I, an output of 580 million tons was reached and with the exception of 1923 this total was not again reached until 1942, in World War 11. Losses of output in this period were much greater than ever before; in 1932 the total was 270 million tons less than in 1918 or 1923, and the loss after 1923 was not recovered until 1942. The greatest output was 631 million tons in 1947.

Of all the developments in the post-war history of Western Europe, none has been more remarkable in its aims and in the progress it has achieved than the movement toward European integration. It is not an exaggeration to say that this movement marks a virtual revolution, an about-face, in the long and complicated history of European states over the past three centuries. Although sporadic efforts to achieve European integration can be traced back for at least a 100 years, it remained for the breakdown of the European economies as a result of World War II and the subsequent Russian threat to give new impetus to the concept of broader economic and political integration. In fact, the economic integration of Europe following the end of the war was considered so essential that, in 1949, the administrator of the European Cooperation Administration, Paul Hoffman, spoke of the economic integration of Western Europe as an objective of American policy embodied in the Marshall Plan.

This paper presents a computer method to obtain the shape factors and equal cell volumes of the channels for any well spacing pattern from a potentiometric model. By using this program the authors have processed the data for the seven-spot, direct line-drive and the staggered line-drive patterns. The data for the five-spot pattern had been previously processed by a noncomputer method and are included for completeness. The shape factors and volumes for the channels are presented in tables for those who want to use them to process data using their own permeability relationships and viscosities of their reservoir oils. The authors have used the data and sets of representative permeability curves to process sample calculationr of waterflood performances. The comparison of the calculated results shows that the influence of well spacing is small. The permeabilities of the reservoir rock to oil and water had a greater influence on oil recovery for a given pore-volume throughput of water than the well spacing pattern. The more water-wet the reservoir rock, the better the possibility of permeabilities which are conducive to good recovery. The viscosity of the reservoir oil also influences the recovery more than the well spacing pattern. The reduction in the percentage recovery of oil with increase in viscosity of the reservoir oils is small when oil viscosities are in the range of 0.1 to 3. Above this range the reductions in recoveries are extensive. Sample comparisons of the time required for different patterns to recover the oil are presented. Results of an example calculation are given to show the effect of the permeability profile on recovery. INTRODUCTION The effect of well spacing pattern on the recovery of oil when flooding with either gas or water has been studied by many investigators. Muskat et al.1 presented an analysis using conductivity, sweep efficiency and unit mobility to the time of breakthrough. Dyes et al.2 used experimental techniques (X-ray shadowgraphs) and different mobility ratios. They presented quantitatively the relationship between mobility and sweep efficiency at and after breakthrough. Hauber3 presented a method to predict waterflood performance for arbitrary well spacing patterns and mobility ratios. Craig et al.,4 using techniques similar to Dyes et al. to determine sweep efficiency for a five-spot pattern, added the use of relative permeability curves at breakthrough and thereafter. Douglas et al.5 sed rela- tive permeabilities and continuously changing saturations throughout the entire five-spot flood pattern. In obtaining their solutions they used finite-difierence equations. Hig-gins and Leighton6,7 also used relative permeabilities and continuously changing saturations throughout the pattern before and after breakthrough. They employed techniques that process a flood-pattern calculation on the computer in about one minute. The methods of Douglas et al. and Higgins and Leighton both checked closely the laboratory results for a wide range of mobility ratios. This paper presents some sample performances calculated by the Higgins and Leighton method that show the effect on recovery of different permeabilities and viscosities using the seven-spot, the line-drive and the staggered line-drive, as well as the fivespot flood pattern. No previous paper has presented these data using different permeability curves and continuously changing saturations throughout the flood patterns. The paper also presents (1) the results and analyses of the flood-pattern prediction, (2) the computer techniques for determining the shape factors and volumes from the potentiometric models for the foregoing flood patterns, and (3) the shape factors and volumes of the channels of the flood pattern in the event reservoir engineers may like to process waterflood calculations using their own permeability curves and reservoir oils. DESCRIPTION OF METHOD VOLUMES AND SHAPE FACTORS The use of channels taken from a potentiometric model (see Fig. 1) to aid in calculating the performances of water floods of nonlinear patterns has been thoroughly explained in the literature.0,7 Therefore, very little theory, discussion, or proof regarding this phase will be repeated in this paper. The computer method presented in this paper to calculate the volumes and the shape factors of the channels of potentiometric models employs the trapezoidal rule for the volumes and the Pythagorean theorem (the hypotenuse equals the square root of the sum of the squares of the two sides of a right triangle) for the shape factors. In calculating the volume of a channel, the area of each cell in the channel is determined and then multiplied by the thickness to obtain the volume. In determining the areas of the cells, trapezoids are constructed whose vertical sides are spaced Ax apart, as shown in Fig. 2. The length of the sides is the difference between an ordinate cut off by the top and bottom of the cell — usually equipo-tentials. The coordinates of the points along an equipo-tential or streamline are obtained by Lagrange's8 equation of interpolation for which the constants are coordinate points at the intersections. THE advent of a sensitive X-ray method of analysis recently has allowed the determination of retained austenite in amounts as low as 0.3 pct.' As a result this phase has been found in quenched low carbon steels where its presence has not been generally suspected. In the course of a study of the tempering process,' retained austenite determinations were made by the X-ray method on a series of high purity Fe-C alloys and plain carbon steels. The chemical analyses of these materials and details of the hardening procedure are given in Table I. Results were obtained after quenching to 72°F (22°C) and — 321 °F (—196°C). Austenitizing temperatures were between 100" and 150°F above A, or Acm. All proeutec-toid cementite or ferrite was in solution. B. S. Crocker (Screened Ore Used for Fine Grinding at Lake Shore Mines, P. 499) was born in Toronto, Ont. and attended Saint Andrews College and University of Toronto. He received a B.A. and M.A. degree. He was graduated with honors and received a fellowship in metallurgy. Mr. Crocker did post-graduate research at University of Toronto from 1933 to 1934. He was employed by Beattie Gold Mines in 1933. He did research in milling at Lake Shore Mines from 1934 to 1936 and from 1936 to 1940 was head of experiment laboratory. At the present time he is mill superintendent with Lake Shore Mines at Kirkland Lake, Ont., Canada. Grinding, cyanidation, flotation and roasting are of special interest to him. He is a member of AIME. Mr. Crocker has presented several papers before C.I.M.M. and also holds membership in this society as well as Professional Engineers of Ontario. Skiing, yacht racing and photography are his favorite hobbies.
