Drilling in Missouri in 1943 continued at a lower rate than in 1942, only 28 wells being completed. Following the completion of the Cities Service Oil Company's No. I Jim Cook near Tarkio, in the northwest corner, NW. 'fi sec. 32, T. 65 N., R. 39, W., Atchison County, four dry holes were drilled by other parties, all a mile or more from the Cook well. Later the Cities Service Oil Co, completed No. 2 Cook for 60 bbl. Table I gives a summary of activities by counties. The total footage drilled was 23,83134 ft., of which 12,802 1/2 ft. was by cable tools and 11,029 by rotary. Four of the dry holes were drilled into Mississippian or older beds.

The Phelps Dodge Corp. Lavender pit is located in the Bisbee mining district near the town of Lowell, Ariz. A quartz monzonite porphyry exists as an intrusive stock and was the source of mineralization for the limestone replacement orebodies being mined by underground methods. Leaching of the upper portion of the stock, and precipitation of the copper as chalcocite on the finely dispersed un- oxidized pyrite in the monzonite porphyry, formed a low grade ore zone below a leached capping varying from 50 to 300 ft thick. Churn drilling starting in 1916 and supplemental churn drilling begun early in 1950 indicated a mineable area about 3100 ft long by 2400 ft wide. In general drilling was on 100-ft centers. The pit was planned with 50-ft benches and wall slopes varying from 1 to 1 to a flatter slope of 1 1/3 to 1 dependent on the character of the ground. Materials within the pit limits, using a 0.6 pct minimum grade cutoff, were estimated at 41 million tons of 1.14 pct copper ore, 31 million tons of low grade sulfides suitable for leaching with an average grade of 0.42 pct, and 70 million tons of waste.

The Petroleum Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Bartlesville, Okla., has for the past three and a half years maintained a laboratory with the necessary personnel for conducting research on methods of increasing the recovery of oil. Some of the preliminary problems encountered in starting this work, with the data obtained, were discussed in A. I. M. E. Technical Publication No. 144, "Oil Recovery Investigations of the Petroleum Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines," which was presented at the October meeting of the Institute at Tulsa, Okla., in 1928. Scope of Paper The following discussion gives some of the results of the more recent work at the Oil Recovery Laboratory. These experiments were conducted to obtain laboratory data pertaining to the relative merits or efficiencies of various pressure media in the recovery of oil from a sand reservoir. Two general types of experiments were conducted. In one the various pressure media were passed through an artificial body of sand partly saturated with oil at a constant input pressure; in the other the pressure media were passed through the body of sand partly saturated with oil at a constant volume rate. No attempt will be made to discuss the ramifications of economic problems which enter into the choice of a pressure medium. Apparatus and Materials The two 6-in. by 6-ft. flow tubes described in Technical Publication 144 were used in these experiments. This research provides an empirical approach toward further analysist10 of the variables in rock breakage under direct, hydroimpact (impacting on fluid) and explosive impulse loading. That the strain on the face of a block of rock, below an impact pin or explosive charge, is directly proportionate to the rupturing force F and inversely proportionate to the product of the burden W and the hole periphery S, is borne out in the laboratory using electrical resistance strain gages to measure a peak strain during rupture by small explosive charges detonated in boreholes. Furthermore, such findings established the validity of the expression F = Ss • Wy • R as a useful relationship from which, it is believed, can be derived practical applications in commercial rock blast design.

TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND THE MEMBERS OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS GENTLEMEN: Herewith are submitted the report of the Treasurer for the year 1936 and the reports for the same year of the following committees: Admis¬sions, Membership, Papers and Publications, Library, Student Relations, and MINING AND METALLURGY. To these reports you are referred for details of the year's activities. Finances.-Income for the year was $173,091 including an appropria¬tion of $2500 from the Rocky Mountain Fund earmarked to defray expense for official visits to western Sections and student societies. This compares with $141,754 in 1935 and exceeds by more than $50,000 the income of 1933 wherein the low point during the depression was reached. The major items of increase were: $6,700 from current dues; $10,600 in initiation fees and dues of newly enrolled members; $10,800 from the monthly magazine MINING AND METALLURGY. Sundry small declines were offset by minor increases. Expenditures for the year totaled $176,007 compared with $148,361 in 1935. Major increases were $5,700 for MINING AND METALLURGY; $4,000 for TRANSACTIONS and TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS; $1,500 for meetings; $1,300 for Local Section appropriations; $6,500 for Technical Division expense; $5,000 for Increase of Membership expense; and $2,500 for visits to Local Sections and educational institutions. Comment on several of these items will appear under subsequent heads. Net deficit for the year was $2,915, this sum being made up from the accumulated surplus. It is interesting to observe that the net excess of income over outgo for the five-year period 1932-1936, inclusive, is $760. Membership and Dues.-During the year there was a net gain in membership, including Members, Associates, Junior Members and Junior Foreign Affiliates of 755 (from 7116 to 7871). In addition there was a gain of 616 in Student Associates (from 1004 to 1620). Taking account of small losses totaling 5 in the other grades, the net increase was 1366 bringing the total to 9607, the highest figure reached in the history of the Institute except at the end of 1921 when the total was 9850. FOR MANY YEARS lead and zinc have had the so-called protection of a tariff and it is the purpose of the following brief discussion to show what' such protection actually accomplishes with a view to forecasting the possible results of the present copper tariff. In analyzing the subject, tabulations of the United States production, consumption, imports and exports, including ore and concentrates and all of the metallic products, of both lead and zinc have been made for each year since 1900. Of these data, the relationship of the imports and exports and the relative foreign and domestic prices are shown in Table 1. The conclusions drawn from these figures are listed below. 1. The United States is an exporter of zinc. 2. The United States is an importer of lead. 3. The average price of zinc at St. Louis for the last 32 years has been no higher than on the London market even though zinc and zinc ore have "enjoyed" a protective (?) tariff of varying amounts per pound for 22 years of this period. 4. The average price of lead on the New York market for 32 years has been 1.2c. per pound higher than on the London market, the tariff varying from 0.75 to 1.5c. per pound of lead in ore, and 1 to 2c. or more on manufactured lead.

MORE than thirty members of the Coal Division attended the Coal Land Valuations Round Table on Monday morning. Chairman Dilworth stated that the Committee had been appointed to take up the question and, after reading the list of members of the Committee, pointed out that the object of the meeting was to formulate a plan of action rather than to discuss any phases of valuation, per se. To this end he presented a tentative outline of points to be considered in the future by the Committee. After a lively discussion on the desirability of inclusion of some questions in the agenda of the Committee, the following outline was adopted :

IF one is to place any credence at all in the reports published in the daily press, the subject of conservation has been a very lively topic of conversation during the past 60 days, and it does not appear that the temperature of the summer months has been in any way moderated by the discussion. It is a subject in which we are all vitally interested and to which, so far as our mineral resources are concerned, both the Institute and the Geological Survey have liberally contributed. The report of the National Conservation Commission, appointed by President Roosevelt, contains a series of papers on the conservation of mineral resources, all of which were prepared by members of the Geological Survey and were compiled largely from information previously collected by that Federal bureau in the performance of its regular duties. It is not the purpose of this paper to reiterate in extenso any of the material already published. The contributions of the Survey officials to the Commission's report have been published in a separate document as Bulletin No. 394. This docunient is for free distribution and may be obtained upon application to the Director of the Survey. In the preparation of this paper I desire merely to make a few suggestions regarding the possible necessity of some restraint upon or control of one branch of the mining industry with which I have been somewhat closely associated for the past 20 years-that of coal. Most of the members of the Institute are cognizant of the suits brought by the government against the anthracite-operators in Pennsylvania, or the combination of interests commonly known as the ? hard-coal trust." The Gilman district is on the northeast flank of the Sawatch Range in central Colorado. It has yielded a total of 10,000,000 tons of ore having a value of over $250,000,000. Paleozoic sediments intruded by a Tertiary quartz latite sill and unconformably overlying Precambrian intrusives and metasediments comprise the country rock of the area. The sediments strike northwesterly and dip 8° to 12° northeasterly. Structures in the Precambrian are related to the Homestake shear zone of the Colorado mineral belt. Only minor folding and faulting occur in the sediments. The principal ore bodies are massive sulfide replacement deposits in carbonate rocks. They consist of long, pipe-like mantos in the completely dolomitized Mississippian Leadville Limestone and funnel-shaped chimneys of copper- silver ore cutting across the Mississippian and Devonian strata. Mineralization is continuous from the chimneys into the mantos. The principal ore bodies are roughly in the shape of a four-tined fork which points up dip. Smaller manto deposits occur in the Cambrian Sawatch Quartzite, and fissure veins are present in the Precambrian rocks. The principal minerals in the mantos are marmatite and galena in a gangue of pyrite and manganosiderite. The chimneys consist of a central core of pyrite with erratically distributed chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, freibergite, and occasional galena with a shell of zinc ore on the outer margin. Both the chimneys and the mantos are surrounded by imperfect shells of manganosiderite and sanded dolomite. The mineralization is of Laramide age. Hydrothermal alteration affects all rock units to varying degrees. Clay mineral alteration halos occur around the ore bodies. Hydrothermal solutions have developed sanded rock, rubble filled channels, and banded zebra textures, principally in the Leadville Limestone. Structural control of the ore bodies is not well defined. Both the location of the district and the chimneys are probably related to basement structures. The mantos are largely controlled by stratigraphic factors and a pre-Pennsylvanian karst topography in the Leadville Limestone, which were modified by hydrothermal activity, and by weak zones of northeasterly trending faults.

At the meeting of the Board of Directors, and of the Council of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, February 21, 1911, Dr. R. W. Raymond asked for the appointment of a joint commit¬tee to receive and consider a communication (which was duly sent by him under date of March 16) tendering his resignation as Member and Secretary of each body. On March 31, the Board of Directors and the Council accepted the resignation of Dr. Raymond, and on the recommendation of the Council, the Board authorized and directed his appointment as Secretary Emeritus, upon whom the Council may call for special editorial and other services in connection with the publications of the Institute.

Oil recovery by the imbibition mechanism can be important in fractured carbonate reservoirs with a bottom water drive. Laboratory experiments were performed on water-wet carbonate rocks to model this process. The results are interpreted in light of the applicable scaling laws. The imbibition production behavior of a pillar of rock subjected to a slowly rising water table can be synthesized from data on total immersion experiments on small rock samples. If the rate of water table rise is slow enough and if the physical properties are such that the imbibition zone is of a small vertical extent, then only the final oil recovery on the small samples need be known. Applying laboratory imbibition data to a real reservoir should be done with caution because of possible wettability problems and the unknown behavior of two-phase flow in fractures. INTRODUCTION The spontaneous taking up of a preferential wetting fluid into a porous medium with the simultaneous expulsion of the contained fluid is termed imbibition. One of the many physical imbibition processes is the production of oil by the taking up of water into a water-wet reservoir rock. In certain types of heterogeneous reservoirs, e.g., fractured, it is realized that imbibition alone may be the dominant mechanism. Theoretical studies of imbibition oil recovery have followed several lines of attack. The behavior of certain mathematically tractable and conceptually simple models have been analyzed. Birks1 considered a bundle of vertical capillaries model, while Perotti et al.2 and Kelemen3 used a model of a series of vertically oriented fractures. If the oil production behavior from a block of reservoir rock is known, then the cumulative behavior of a vertical stack of these blocks subjected to a rising water table can be determined by a method outlined by Aronofsky et al. 4 Knowing the capillary pressure and relative permeability functions should uniquely set the imbibition behavior for a given sample. Solutions of the partial differential equations describing the process, however, present some formidable problems. Digital computer techniques have been applied to displacement processes in which the capillary pressure has been included.5"8 More recently, similar techniques have been used by Blair 9 to calculate countercurrent imbibition behavior. The fact that imbibition behavior is described by the usual fluid flow equations (Darcy's Law and continuity equation) implies that the derived scaling laws should apply equally to this situation. Use of model experiments to study imbibition has been employed by Graham and Richardson 10 and Mattax and Kyte,11 who actually tested the scaling law applicability. This study is concerned with scaled model imbibition experiments on water-wet carbonate rocks. Of particular interest is the slowly rising water table experiment. This simulates a highly fractured reservoir with the water table rising uniformly through the vertical fracture system. Experiments were performed on different sized samples and with different rates of rise of the water-oil interface surrounding the rock pillar. Total immersion imbibition experiments on smaller rock samples were performed to test the basic linear scaling laws and to see if these simpler tests could be used to synthesize the rising water table experimental results. THEORY IMBIBITION SCALING LAWS Scaling laws for the flow of two incompressible immiscible fluids in a porous medium have been presented by Rapoport.12 These are derived directly from Darcy's Law for the individual phases and the continuity equation. Results from a laboratory model experiment will duplicate those from some reservoir prototype if a constant proportion is maintained among the three forces acting on the fluids — the capillary pressure gradient, the gravitational gradient and the flowing pressure gradient. With the construction of the Magdeburg zinc works, the Georg von Giesche's Erben Mining Co. of Breslau has to a certain extent completed the program of reconstruction which it set as its goal after the boundaries of Upper Silesia were drawn by the Treaty of Versailles. During its history, covering.more than two centuries, zinc and lead mining has been its chief activity. Through the new boundaries established, it lost to Poland all its mines and smelters, including five distillation smelters. Of its extensive properties, there remained only an apparently unimportant and unexplored portion of the old Bleischarley ore field which, however, happily made possible the resumption of its old business. In 1925 the Deutsch-Bleischarley shaft-only a few kilometers from the old Bleischarley shaft—was sunk and developed, and in May 1926 production of lead and zinc ore was resumed. As facilities for smelting were lacking, the ore was at first delivered to the neighboring smelters, which had now become Polish. Realization of the plan to build its own zinc works had to be postponed at first for lack of capital. In the meantime, however, plans for the new works were worked out in all details. After extensive experimentation in a semicommercial pilot plant it was decided, at the end of 1928 and the beginning of 1929, to use the electrolytic process and, for economic reasons, to place the works at Magdeburg. With zinc at the approximate price level that had ruled since the Deutsch-Bleischarley mine had begun working, it was hoped that the plan could be completed in 1930 with the company's own resources. However, falling metal prices, already noticeable in 1929, made this impossible, and further postponement for a time became necessary. It has been established' that vanadium exhibits a ductile to brittle transition temperature which increases with increasing hydrogen content. Optical microscopic examination at room temperature revealed no evidence of hydride precipitate in fractured specimens containing 100 ppm H, but hydrides were present in samples with 800 ppm H. More recently2 the strain rate and temperature dependences of the ductility drop in vanadium containing 6 ppm H were reported. It was argued that the ductile-brittle transition, while dependent on the presence of hydrogen, probably could not be explained by the precipitation of hydride. The bases of the argument were that 6 ppm H would not produce sufficient hydride to alter the ductility to the extent observed and no visual evidence of hydride was obtained. However, the data were not sufficient in these investigations 1,2 to define accurately the ductile-brittle transition temperature. Also, no information was available concerning the terminal solubility of hydrogen in vanadium at the low concentrations employed. westlake 3 has studied the electrical resistivity of vanadium at several hydrogen concentrations. It was prepared for the San Miguel property at Batopilas, State of Chihuahua, Mexico, owned by the Consolidated Batopilas Silver Mining Company of New York, at present under the management of ex-Governor Alexander R. ALTHOUGH valuable information has been pub-lished on the important problems of slag losses with which every copper metallurgist has to contend, a great deal of money is still being wasted in copper smelters all over the world, through metal being irretrievably lost in reverberatory slags. When smelting a relatively low-grade pyritic concentrate together with a proportion of direct-smelting oxi- dized ore, as is done in Oroya, slag volumes are of necessity high, and even a relatively clean slag, say of 0.5 pct Cu, means a loss of almost 4 pct of all the copper charged, or over $1,000,000 annually at present output and prices. While it is known that such losses can often be reduced by allowing the slag time to settle, with or without addition of a reducing agent such as coal or pyrite, the facilities for such treatment are not always available in a plant of old design working to capacity under severe space limitations.
