E DUCATION for the mineral industry was at first a single comprehensive curriculum, but it was early recognized that the main basis of mining is physics, while that of metallurgy is chemistry. The first school to offer curricula leading to degrees in mineral industry education in the United States (1853) had separate ones in mining and metallurgy. The Columbia School of Mines (the first really successful one) had only a single curriculum when it opened in 1864, but within a few years had so reorganized its work that it offered curricula in mining, metallurgy, geology, chemistry, and civil engineering. Interest in the metallurgy or geology curricula was slight at first, and for the next 30 years the great majority of Columbia students took the mining curriculum, probably partly because it contained nearly as much geology as the geology curriculum, practically all the metallurgy, and most of the chemistry, and partly because of the degree awarded for it. Other schools kept their mining curricula equally broad, and as late as 1900-1910 men were graduating as mining engineers who were practically as well prepared to make geology or metallurgy their life work, as they were for mining. Gradually, however, the subject matter of mining geology and metallurgy became so enriched through research and development that separate curricula in them became worth while; their progressive development is the subject of another chapter. Mining curricula also began to be somewhat diversified, and schools in areas where coal mining was of outstanding importance began to offer options in coal mining, the earlier curricula having been chiefly aimed at metal mining. The petroleum industry began its meteoric rise about the same time as mineral instruction in this country, but little more of applied science attended its birth than had attended such ancient practical arts as copper and iron

The Mufulira mine in Northern Rhodesia is 13° south of the Equator and at an altitude of 4100 ft above sea level. The concentrator was planned in 1930 to treat about 10,000 tons of ore per day, but before construction work had gone very far the size of the plant was reduced to 1500 tons daily capacity. Then just as the construction was finished in December 1931, the price of copper did not warrant the commencement of operations and it was not until October 1933 that the mine re-opened. Extensions have been made to the plant in 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1940 and finally in 1945. The capacity of the plant when the 1945 extension is completed will be 9500 short tons per day. The various extensions have been carried out with the minimum confusion and with great skill on the part of the designers and the erection engineers. In dealing with the plant in this paper it is proposed to give an outline of the present practice and only to refer to past practice when it is considered of particular interest. Ore Treated The ore consists of fine grained highly siliceous, felspathic and argillaceous quartz- ites, the latter containing graphitic carbon and locally termed graywacke. These rocks are considerably altered near the surface and on the fringes of the ore body. Despite extensive efforts at mixing, both underground and in the crushing plant, many sudden changes of ore take place in the mill feed. The minerals are chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite with relatively unimportant amounts of malachite, native copper, azurite, covellite and chrysocolla. Gold is present at about I oz to a thousand tons, and silver at about 2 dwt. per ton. With increasing depth the nonsulphide content or,, as commonly termed locally, the oxide content of the ore is decreasing and is now less than 0.25 pct against a high of 0.77 pct- Crushing Operations The first stage of crushing is done under. ground where the oversize from I2-in. grizzlies is fed to a 56 X 72-in. jaw crusher. At the Selkirk shaft two 10-ton skips deliver the run of mine ore at a rate of 450 tons per hour to the 400-ton capacity shaft bins. One 6 ft wide Ross chain feeder and one locally made air-operated finger feeder feed the two 30-in. McCully crushers. Ahead of each crusher is a 6 X 9-ft spring grizzley spaced at 5 in. on a 35O slope. Neither the Ross chain feeder nor the finger feeder is entirely satisfactory and for the wet, muddy and sticky ore that has to be handled it is planned to replace these with two 6-ft wide apron pan feeders. The ore from the Waihi mine-more especially that produced in the upper levels-contains a large proportion of hard, chalcedonic quartz, and the gold exists in an exceedingly fine state, conditions which necessitate very fine crushing in order to ob¬tain a high extraction of the precious metal. There can be two types of films on solids, those which are stable in mono-layers and those which tend to aggregate into three dimensional structures. A great number of metal films formed by condensation onto a solid base are unstable in the sense that they will aggregate into crystals providing the atoms possess sufficient surface mobility. The crystalline structure of the film is strongly influenced by the base in many systems and, in some cases, a single orientation prevails when the force fields around the atoms in the supporting crystal are sufficiently strong.' Relatively little is available in the literature about the nature of these forces and the role they play in promoting a preferred orientation of the atoms arriving at the substrate surface. An understanding of their periodicity and magnitude relative to the surface forces characteristic of the film itself should provide insight into the critical dependence of film orientation on the nature and temperature of the substrate. In addition, this effect may be very useful in preparing samples for surface studies. The study of the physical and chemical characteristics of pure metal surfaces has been severely handicapped by the presence of strongly adherent foreign films. Furthermore, the randomness of the surface orientation has obscured interpretation of experimental results. Evaporation of metals in high vacuum onto carefully selected substrates under ideal conditions for preferred orientation appears suited to the preparation of flat, oxide-free, oriented films for surface reaction studies. Many factors influence their structure and some understanding of the mechanism of their formation is a necessary prerequisite for obtaining satisfactory surfaces for study. The dominant factors in defining film structure are film thickness and growth rate and the nature, condition, and temperature of the substrate. GENERAL ASSEMBLY The system was enclosed in an 18 in. bell jar which rested on an L-shaped neoprene gasket on a ground steel plate as indicated in Fig 1. Rapid evacuation of the system to 10-6 mm mercury was facilitated by a 4 in. manifold, 2 in. packless valve, and an extra large diffusion pump. Some of US have been impressed with the need for a better understanding of the future place of the engineer in the petroleum industry. In academic work we are continually asked to advise students as to the opportunities in different directions, to guide them in their selection of professions, and it would be extremely helpful to those in academic lines of work to have the opinion of engineers from the industry relative to the need for petroleum engineers. IS the industry going to require a continually growing number of engineers in the future years, or have we perhaps reached equilibrium in that regard ? In anticipation of this meeting, I undertook to canvass opinion among a number of engineers of my acquaintance and I have been rather astonished to learn that the expenditure on engineering salaries in the producing branch of the oil industry is extremely low. I have figures from eight or 10 of the larger oil companies and it seems to be a fair statement on the basis of these figures to say that the average American oil company is devoting less than 2 per cent. of its gross expenditures in oil production to the payment of engineering salaries. A few examples will be of interest. I shall not mention names of individual companies, but one large Mid-Continent company is spending slightly less than 1 per cent. of its gross expenditure—that is, less than 1 per cent. of the total expenditure in the producing department—on engineering salaries and about as much on engineering research, which might properly be regarded as a phase of its engineering work. Another Mid-Continent company is spending about 11/4 per cent. on engineering salaries. A large California company is spending about l1/2 per cent. The largest figure that has come to my attention is that of an important Rocky Mountain and Mid-Continent company that is spending a little more than 6 per cent., but that is apparently an extreme case. A STUDY of subsidence and ground movement in the copper and iron mines of the upper peninsula of Michigan has been made by W. R. Crane of the United States Bureau of Mines and published as Bulletin 295 of 66 pages and 49 illustrations. As a result of subsidence, the country adjacent to the mines and over- lying the mine workings in this district is often broken to such an extent as to affect its value; mine shafts and development openings are occasionally so damaged as to be rendered useless, and water can enter the workings through fractures and cave-ins. The problem is more serious in the iron-mining districts, where villages and towns not owned by the operating companies have grown up around mining operations.

INTRODUCTION Screening is a mechanical process that separates particles by size. Modern coal preparation is made possible by efficient sizing. Sizing of coal is defined in terms of the opening through which an individual particle will or will not pass, or as two openings, the larger of which passes the particle and the smaller of which retains the particle. Screening accomplishes sizing by passing coal of a wide range of sizes through a series of screens, each of a decreasing size. The individual screen discharges are then directed into different screen products for subsequent sale or processing. Screening in modern preparation plants is done for the following reasons: 1 ) Removal of fine coal before a size reduction step. 2) Size separation of the coal into a coarse and fine fraction for sized products or processing in coarse and fine coal circuits. 3) Recovery of heavy media from heavy media coal cleaning circuits. 4) Dewatering. 5) Rock and trash removal by handpicking on a screen. Fig. 8-1 is a generalized flowsheet of a plant showing the use of screens in the coal preparation process. Table 8-1 shows the vibrating screen equipment utilized in Fig. 8-1

The measurement of the rate of flow of liquids through sands dates back to 1856, when H. d Arcyb, a French physicist, carried out his classic experiments on the flow of water through sand layers. The earliest recorded data on relationships of pressure to flow of fluids through porous rocks in this country are those of Newell 23 in 1885. The first comprehensive studies of flow were made in 1898 by King15, who measured the rate of flow of water and air through consolidated and uncon-solidated sands and published the results. From 1900 to 1920 there appears to have been little interest in permeability. In 1920 the increase in demand for oil led the U. S. Bureau of Mines to begin a series of experiments to determine subsurface relationships of oil and water and the characteristics of their flow. Mills18 studied the relationship of flow of liquids to text- and structure of the sands, and Melcher17 in 1925 made a quantitative study of effect of changes in pressure on rate of flow of crude oil through Oklahoma oil sands. Since 1930 the importance of flow measurements to production of oil and gas has been emphasized by a large number of excellent investigations. Among these the works of Fettke9.10, BarbI.2, Cloud6, Nutting24-", Bot-set4, Nevin22, Tickell32.33, Fancher, Lewis and Barnes8, Moore, Schilthuis and Hurst19, and Wyckoff, Botset and Muskat"-39 have contributed much to our knowledge of the technique of permeability measurements and to the laws of liquid and gas flow through porous sands. The application of their work has led to the establishment of laboratories for measuring the permeability and porosity of oil sands by most of the large companies. All the investigations, except those of Wyckoff, Botset and Muskat, and Moore, Schilthuis and Hurst deal with linear flow; that is, flow in a more or less straight line through a given cross-sectional area of sand. The Kayford, Boone and Nicholas Division of Bethlehem Mines Corp. operates a modern coal preparation plant in Van, WV. Since start-up of the Van plant in 1976 until the summer of 1980, the refuse handling system proved to be a costly maintenance problem and a material handling bottleneck. During the 1980 two-week miners' vacation, the original system - which included two screw conveyors and a drag conveyor - was replaced by an installation using two Flexowall steep angle belt conveyors. This paper describes the technical and economic analysis that led to the new installation and reviews its first year operating performance.

WHEN so many statements are being made relative to the requirements of zinc metal, it is difficult for some of us who are acquainted with the industry to visualize how it is possible to step up production so as to supply some of the fantastic requirement figures that are published from time to time. I shall attempt to approach this subject from the standpoint of existing conditions which affect production, also keeping in mind the price ceiling under which the industry operates. Total production of primary and secondary zinc in the United States for 1941 will be about 878,000 tons, to which should be added about 36,000 tons of Mexican slab zinc available for consumption or export from the United States, giving a total available of 914,000 tons. Production of slab zinc of all grades in 1942 should be 953,000 tons. Adding the available Mexican supply should bring the total to 989,000 tons.

At Bethlehem's Grace mine's 6000-tpd pelletizing plant a cascade control system is utilized to approach a constant magnetite filter cake moisture, a critical factor in obtaining quality green pellets. Variables being controlled by instrumentation are filter feed solids, filter tub level, first and second stage pump sump levels and thickener sludge level, all at varying feed rates. Startup difficulties, modifications and contemplated additions to obtain closer control of the moisture are discussed. Situated 45 miles west of Philadelphia and 50 miles southwest of Bethlehem Steel Co. 's Beth-lehem plant, the integrated Grace mine facilities produce 4000 tpd of high-quality iron ore pellets. Startup of the Grace mill was in November 1958, and iron concentrates were shipped until March 1960, when the pellet plant went into operation. The underground mine, when fully developed, will hoist about 9000 tpd, including development rock. The crude ore, which has an iron content of approximately 42%, is magnetically cobbed and crushed in closed circuit with %-in. slotted vibrating screens. The ore is washed and screened in the mill and the 1/4-in. screen product is again cobbed prior to feeding to the rod mills. Grinding is done in rod mills, and in ball mills that are in closed circuit with 30-in. cyclones, to 1% on 100 mesh and 65% -325 mesh. The ground ore is magnetically concentrated by three-drum permanent-type finisher magnets to 67% Fe. The magnetite concentrate is pumped from the mill to a 50-ft thickener in the pellet plant. The thickened magnetite concentrate is relayed to the filters through a two-stage pump arrangement. The filter cake is fed by belt from filter concentrate bins to mixer-muller belts where it is intimately mixed with bentonite and a slight amount of water for moisture control. The fluffed concentrate then drops into balling cones. The green pellets from the balling cones are fed in a prescribed feed pattern to shaft furnaces through the use of shuttle car mechanisms. The green pellets are dried, heated to 2500°F and cooled to 1200°F as they descend through the furnace and into pellet coolers where the pellets are further reduced in temperature to 250°F. Heat is recovered in the cooling process through the use of air-to-air heat exchangers. The cooled pellets discharge on a rubber conveyor belt and are transferred to 6000-ton pellet railroad loading bin. The final pellet product consists of 90% +'1/4 in. material (after tumble testing1) and contains 66% Fe plus 3% silica. It has been the usual practice to maintain constant filter tank level by pumping an excess constant volume and using a moveable fishtail splitter to divert the desired amount of slurry to the filter tank. The excess from the fishtail and from the filter overflow pipe, which maintains a constant level, is returned to the source. The idea of using water-only cyclones to scalp clean coal from the feed to other devices has recently been gaining in popularity. 1,2,6 An indication of this popularity is that water-only cyclone scalping is already employed in a few commercial plants. Water-only cyclones scalp the feed to a heavy media vessel in the Warwick plant,3 to Deister tables in the Rowland plant,4 and to a heavy media cyclone circuit in the Amherst Coal Company's McGregor plant.5 Despite this trend, we found surprisingly little information in the literature on the performance of water-only cyclone scalping. Therefore, we undertook a study of its technical merits, limiting our investigation to a water-only cyclone scalper in conjunction with heavy-media cyclones. We felt this to be a reasonable combination of equipment, since both processes operate well on the same size coal. First, we developed simple mathematical relationships revealing general characteristics of the system. Next, we compared the clean coal yield and quality obtainable by the system on four different coals with that obtainable by heavymedia cyclone circuit alone and water-only cyclones middlings recirculation circuit alone. This was done by using computer program to simulate the operation of the three systems. Finally, we considered the effect that implementation of the system would have on a typical preparation plant circuit. The System The system chosen for study [(shown schematically in Fig. 1)] comprises two stages: a primary stage (PI) consisting of water-only cyclones, and a secondary stage (P2) consisting of heavy media cyclones. The water-only cyclones separate raw coal at a low specific gravity, producing a relatively small amount of high quality clean coal and a refuse containing much good coal. This refuse is then recleaned in the secondary stage, where the sharper separation of heavy media cyclones, operated at a higher specific gravity, reclaims additional clean coal. Finally, the clean coal from both stages is combined as the system's clean coal, while the refuse from the secondary stage becomes the system's refuse output. Theoretical Analysis Two assumptions lie behind the following theoretical analysis. The first assumption is that partition curves can represent not only the performance of each stage but also the performance of the system as a whole. These curves show partition number as a function of specific gravity, where partition number is either the percent or fraction of a raw coal with a given specific gravity reporting to clean coal. The second assumption is that these curves are independent of the raw coal characteristics. At any specific gravity the system's partition number is solely a function of the partition numbers of each stage. For convenience, we use the following variables in describing this relationship: g = specific gravity, PS(g) = the partition number of the system at specific gravity g, P1(g) = the partition number of the primary stage at specific gravity g, P2(g) = the partition number of the secondary stage at a specific gravity g. For this system, we can show algebraically that the relationship is: [Ps (g) = PI (g) + (1- P1(g)) P2 (9)(1)] With this equation the system's partition curve can be determined if the partition curves of each stage are known. By definition, the partition numbers P1(g) and P2(g) must each be less than, or equal to, one. Placing these constraints on Eq. (1), we arrive at the relations: [Ps(g) % P1(g) and Ps(g) % P2(g)(2)] Thus, at any specific gravity the system's partition number is always greater than that of both stages. In the testing of materials there exist various methods of recording graphically the behavior of a material subjected to tensile stress. Probably the most common method is to plot the tensile stress So, obtained by dividing the load P by the original area of cross section A0 at the start of the test, as a function of the strain e0, which is obtained by dividing the ?Lo or the change in the gauge length by the original gauge length Lo. A list of the symbols used here is given in Table 1. This method, while it has proved useful in the routine testing and comparison of various materials, does not have a very sound physical basis, as was first pointed out by P. Ludwikl, and consequently does not afford a very deep insight into the true physical behavior of the material under stress. Among the objections to this method may be mentioned: (1) that by dividing the load P at any stage of the test by the original area A. a fictitious stress is obtained, which does not actually exist; (2) that the strain e0 = ?L0 is not an exact expression for the true strain for large values of ?LO in per cent of Lo; (3) that when necking starts the strain varies considerably along the gauge length and the above expression no longer gives the true strain existing at any point on the outside of the bar; and (4) that the axial strain varies over the cross section of the necked portion and e0 does not represent an average of these strains over the cross section. Stresses taken from such a diagram would be only approximate and, if used to compare results of a test on a given material under simple tension with results obtained under combined stresses, certain errors would be thus introduced. In order to overcome some of these objections, various methods have been suggested, both as to the quantities to be measured and as to their graphical representation. ARTHUR KNAPP, Ardmore, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*).¬On p. 2275 I find a quotation from Mr. Thompson regarding the fountains of the Baku field. I have seen a large number of these gushers or fountains. In every case where unusual amounts of sand were produced the wells caved in and shut off in a few clays and were an absolute loss Very often the formation had caved so far up as to allow the water to enter the oil strata, and not only was the well lost but the ground for many acres around the well was useless for drilling purposes because the disturbed ground had allowed the gas and oil to dissipate and the water to enter. On p. 2268, Mr. Thompson is again quoted regarding the Balakhany field. If the text is consulted further, it will be found that the oil at Balakhany is heavy only in contradistinction to the Bibi Eibat, field. The gravity of the oil at Balakhany is from 28 to 32. Also, it must be noted that the illustration is taken from the conditions in the older part of the field. This field was first chilled 40 years ago, and was a worn-out field 15 years ago. The wells which produce sand are wells in which the casings are practically gone and the formations are full of water. The sand must be bailed from these wells because the clays from the upper stratum have caved into the wells and are obstructing the passage of oil. On p. 2262 is the statement that the Russian wells cannot be pumped on account of the large amounts of free sand produced. They have never tried pumping in the Baku field to any extent. Wherever tried, it has proven a great success. If we take the author's theories as correct and wish to put them into practice, it would first be necessary to consider a few figures. Let us assume that we produce oil and sand together in the proportion in which they exist in the productive strata. It is not uncommon to have wells in the California field which are not gushers, but which, by pumping, produce 1,000 bbl. per clay the first 100 clays.

IN giving a sketch of the geology and mining of the tin-deposits of Cape Prince of Wales, a short description of the geographic and climatic conditions may be of special interest on account of this being a part of the world of which very little is known, even by the reading public. As shown in Fig. 1, the location of the Cape is lat. N. 65° 35' and long. W. 168°. It is bounded on the north by the Arctic ocean ; on the west by Bering strait and on the south by Bering sea. It is the western-most point of the mainland of North America, and to the west, across the strait, one can see East Cape, Siberia, which consists of a rugged, steep coast of granite cliffs. The climatic conditions are of interest because of the part they have had in the surface geology, and also because they affect mining from an economic standpoint. In connection with the climate and geography, it does not seem out of place here to quote a few lines from the prologue of The Wandering Jew, written by Eugene Sue, under the caption '1 The Land's End of Two Worlds."

FLUORSPAR, a little known non-metallic mineral, referred to technically as fluorite, chemically as calcium fluoride, is a compound of calcium and fluorine in the ratio of one molecule of calcium to two of fluorine. By weight it is composed of 51.3 per cent of calcium and 48.7 per cent of fluorine. Its specific gravity is 3.2. It is brittle, has a hardness of four and can be easily scratched with a knife. It weighs about 200 Ib. per cubic foot and has a melting point of 1650" F. The color of fluorspar ranges from pure white and opaque white, according to its purity, to various hues of yellow, green, pink, lavender, blue and brown, to bluish black. Although the lumps have color, when ground the fluorspar becomes pure white. The reason for this is because the mineral usually carries no fixed pigment, the color being produced by the re- fraction of light rays within the crystal structure and small quantities of organic matter which readily oxidizes. It crystallizes in the isometric system with perfect octahedral cleavages.

Flotation ENTERING the profession of minerals beneficiation (it was plain garden variety "ore dressing" . in those days) I was fortunate that at that time the first major innovation in modern ore dressing practice was being introduced. I refer to the Wilfley table. You youngsters that came into the game only 30 years ago or even more recently, with flotation machines and reagents as your very ready tool in time of trouble, do not realize what the invention of the Wilfley table meant to us. We had but one physical property of ores to reckon with-specific gravity- and when there was but little difference in specific gravity between the mineral and the gangue, we were in trouble. The jig and the revolving table were our only mechanical equipment for recovering values and so that we might make even a reasonably satisfactory extraction, we had to classify and reclassify, and jig and rejig, and worry about the laws and advantages of free settling vs hindered settling and just tire the minerals out.

Only the coal of the Sunnyside district in Carbon county is coked. Two companies, the Utah Fuel Company and the Columbia Steel Corporation, operating adjoining mines at Sunnyside and Columbia, produce coke. The Utah Fuel Company has 81 9 beehive coke ovens at Sunnyside. Only 350 ovens are being operated at the present time, largely because the smelters which had been using Sunnyside coke changed their equipment from blast furnaces to reverberatory furnaces

CURTAILMENT of the mineral industry as a whole undoubtedly will follow world peace, but the output of certain minerals should pursue a course well above the average on any curve of probable output projected beyond the trends exhibited through 1939. Without speculating on industrial conditions in the pending recomversion period, demand for fluorspar should be greater than before the war because of these factors, introduced by or resulting directly from military necessity: (1) Discovery and development of new deposits. (2) Improved technology in benefication. (3) New and expanded uses for fluorspar and its derivatives. The steel industry has been and continues to be the greatest consumer of fluorspar, and it wag largely to meet the wartime needs for steel that the domestic fluorspar industry has been expanded so greatly. Not only were the search for and development of new deposits of this mineral considered esstinal but the marginal nature of some of the,c- domestic deposits made it necessary to improve mineral dressinc and processing techniques to utilize them

Oil companies operating in foreign countries have made increased use during 1930 of cooperative agreements in prospecting unproven territory and in developing proven territory. A considerable proportion of the existing foreign fields are held under single ownership and have been developed as units. The operating companies seek to maintain this condition by acquiring land in large blocks or by merging smaller concessions under unit operating agreements. Your committee has secured a number of reports on foreign non-competitive operations and a valuable formal paper which deals with the Golden Lane of Mexico.l 0. B. Knight has drawn some valuable comparisons concerning costs of development and ultimate production between a certain competitive area and another noncompetitive area along that strip of rich producing territory. After discussing details of production, numbers of wells and cost of drilling and production, he concludes that the 93,700,000 bbl. of competitive oil will have cost $0.193 per barrel as compared to 85,700,000 bbl. of noncompetitive oil at $0.059 per barrel. The saving of $0.134 per barrel amounts in round figures to $11,500,000, which is 21/2 times the total cost of developing the non-competitive block. The cost for drilling and development of the two areas of 3550 acres which Mr. Knight compares was $18,150,000 under competitive and $4,760,000 under noncompetitive conditions. The estimated ultimate production of the competitive 3550 acres is expected to reach 93,700,000 bbl., or 8,000,000 bbl. above the noncompetitive block. Under ordinary production methods it is to be expected that a noncompetitive area will yield less oil per unit area than will a similar competitive area, because of closer spacing and more rapid extraction in the latter case. The advantage of noncompetitive conditions, in this regard, is that the undivided ownership makes it possible to apply repressuring as a production method fairly early in the life of the field and thus, in the end, to vastly increase the yield. In the particular region described by Mr. Knight, repressuring is not thought to be a factor of
