THIS is intended as a simple review of the principles and practice of geophysics, so will not be of interest to the geophysicist, who is hereby warned of its elementary character. The engineers for whom it is written are those who, having glimpsed the formidable formulas and discussions of the geophysicists, give all publications on the subject a wide berth. For a few years now the geo-physicists have had a tendency to be ingrowing at their meetings, going deeper and deeper into theory and instrument construction, and forgetting to present the topics that would interest the practicing engineer who desires merely to know how geophysics can help him, not why.

An attempt is made to determine the diffusion coefficients of oxygen ions in hypostoichiometric zirconium oxide. A phenomenological theory is developed for three-phase, unidirectional volume diffusion of a gaseous species from a planar source. Knowledge about oxygen diffusion in a and ß zirconium and experimentally measured rates of movements of interfaces permit the evaluation of oxygen ion diffusivi-ties in ZrO2-x. The results conform to the relationship: sq cm per sec, for the temperature range of 875" to 1050° C. DIFFUSION coefficients of oxygen ions in stoichio-metric oxides have been studied by many investigators. The obtained results not only supplement the knowledge about the lattice-defect structures of oxides and conduction mechanisms but also provide information of technological importance. Rate processes such as oxide sintering, high-temperature creep deformation, and oxidation of metals and their alloys are directly dependent on diffusion phenomena. Unfortunately, diffusion coefficients obtained from studies on stoichio-metric oxides cannot be treated without restraints when applied to oxidation kinetics, if precise evaluations of oxidation rates are desired. Oxides formed on metals are usually nonstoichiometric and exhibit nonuniform distribution of either cation or anion vacancies across their thicknesses. Debuigne and Lehr1 extended Danckwerts'2 mathematical analyses and furnished a semitheoretical treatment for evaluating oxygen diffusion coefficients in zirconium oxide in terms of weight gain measurements during oxidation of zirconium in the temperature range 400° to 850°C. Their calculations are based on theoretical partitioning3 of the total amount of oxygen between a zirconium and its oxide phase. An inherent discrepancy appears to continue throughout their calculations. The amount of oxygen confined to the oxide phase should be corrected by multiplying the calculated oxide thickness by the inverse of Pilling-Bedworth ratio, if expansion of zirconium dioxide is taken into account. The purpose of the present investigation is to provide a new semitheoretical treatment for evaluating diffusion coefficients of moving species in hypostoichiometric oxide. The analyses are relevant to unidirectional volume diffusion. Although the presented method is quite general, its applicability will be discussed in terms of kinetic measurements from oxidation of zirconium at temperatures above the a/ß transition, for reasons stated in the later part of this paper. EXPERIMENTAL Pure, 99.93 wt pct, zirconium samples of approximately 2 by 1 by 0.35 cm were exposed to oxygen for various times at four temperature levels: 875°, 950°, 1000°, and 1050°C. High-purity, better than 99.9 vol pct oxygen was passed through a cold trap and columns containing anhydrous CaSO4 to remove residual water vapor. Before exposing to oxygen at a pressure of 500 Torr, specimens were subjected to wet abrasion on 200- through 600-grit Sic papers and polished with 1—p diamond dust. Prior to oxidizing, all zirconium samples were vacuum-annealed at 10-6 mm Hg for about 15 min at the test temperature. The temperature variation across the uniform heat zone was ±2°C from the preset value. Final polishing, for phase thicknesses measurements, was performed by using 8- and 1-p diamond dust and followed by vibrator polishing with 0.05-µ ? Al2O3 solution. Measurements of phase thicknesses were made by projection on a metallographic viewing screen. Conventional powder X-ray analyses for the oxide were employed. RESULTS Fig. 1 is an example of the cross section of oxidized zirconium. Designations of phases given below this figure are the same as those used in the three-phase diffusion system represented by Fig. 5 in the following section. Lieut. Maxwell E. Erdory, now with the Army of Occupation in France, writes as follows: "The 602d Engrs., many of whose officers are members of the Institute, started its active service in France at Avocourt, where we built a road across `No Man's Land.' This road from Avocourt to Montfaucon started us on a career of road building which lasted from Sept. 26 to Nov. 9. The engineer in war has no working hours. Our first job meant 50 hr. continuous work, a layoff of 4 hr. and 18 hr. more. That was our initiation in this war game. "Back in the States we practised building trenches, dugouts, and underground shelters of all sorts. In France we were unfortunate enough to come upon the scene when the so-called open warfare started. That made all the above unnecessary. Roads was the cry and our job was to see that all the artillery got their roads and got over them. "I might mention here that the roads of France, which were in excellent condition except for numerous shell holes, w re one of the leading factors in the rapid termination of the war. "We built a narrow-gage railroad from Romagne to Landre St. George which cost us a few men. At Stenay we did our first bridge building. We built nine bridges across the Meuse, capable of carrying tanks, in 18 hr. The next day the American army crossed these bridges on their way to Virton, Belgium, and the Rhine. " Our course from Virton, Belgium, took us through Longwy, Musson, and Athus, in which towns I inspected the steel plants. In Musson as well as Longwy the Germans had destroyed most of the blast furnaces. This destruction began in August, 1917. In Athus the furnaces were in good condition, the Germans having removed all motors land electrical apparatus, rendering the plant inoperative. I have taken several photos of interest of these plants. "It is but fitting that I say that the engineer in this war has contributed much toward its success but the "Doughboy" is its hero and we engineers one and all say "All hail the Doughboy."

FOR a number of years the production and use of super-purity aluminum (better than 99.99 pct) has been steadily increasing. High-grade lots of such aluminum show certain outstanding characteristics not found in lower grades containing principally silicon, iron and copper as impurities. One such characteristic is the so-called "self annealing," that is, the recrystallization of the heavily cold worked metal at room temperature.' Interest therefore is aroused as to the effects of the impurities. It is well known that the amounts of silicon and copper which occur in aluminum of better than 99.95 pct are completely soluble, at least at elevated temperatures (above 200°C). Iron, on the other hand, is known to be fairly insoluble in solid aluminum. Thus, a knowledge of the limits of this solubility would be of considerable use in studying the characteristics of the high purity metal. All investigators have agreed that iron has very low solubility in solid aluminum. Rosenhain, Archbutt and Hanson2 reported traces of an aluminum-iron phase in the "purest samples of aluminum obtainable." Gwyer and Phillips3 reported that an iron constituent was visible under the microscope in metal containing ".0088 per cent iron." Roth1 found that in the solid state the solubility of iron in high purity aluminum was 0.01, 0.01, 0.017 and 0.022 pct at 225, 320, 500 and 600°C respectively. Dix5 working with alloys containing less than 0.03 pct impurities, concluded from microscopic and chemical analyses of eutectic areas that the eutectic composition was close to 1.7 pct iron. Dix placed the eutectic temperature at 655°C'. Archer and Fink,6 using high purity aluminum-iron alloys, found that the hypoeutectic liquidus intersects the eutectic horizontal at 1.7 pct. This is in fair agreement with the investigation of the aluminum-iron system by Gwyer and Phillips who placed the eutectic at 1.89 pct iron with a freezing point of 653° PREPARATION AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF ALLOYS Electrolytically refined aluminum (99.991 pct aluminum) and a high purity aluminum-iron alloy (11.45 pct iron) were used in the preparation of the alloys for this investigation. To aid in controlling the iron content of the experimental alloys, an alloy of lower iron content was prepared first from these materials. The high purity aluminum was melted and heated to about 700°C in a plumbago crucible coated with alundum cement and the aluminum-iron alloy was then added. The alloy was thoroughly stirred, fluxed and skimmed and then chill-cast into notch bars. The analyses of the three materials are given in Table I. The alloys for the determination of the solid solubility of iron in aluminum were prepared by melting 600 g total of the aluminum plus the required quantity of the aluminum-iron alloy (No. 92531). Discussion of the paper of C. R. Keyes, presented at the Chattanooga meeting, October, 190S, Bulletin No. 26, February, 1909, pp. 119 to 166. E. R. BUCKLEY, Flat River, Mo. (communication to the Secretary*) :-Some statements in the paper of Mr. Keyes relative to the nature and formation of the Ozark lead- and zinc-deposits seem to me erroneous and misleading, and I respectfully present the following criticisms, placing Mr. Keyes's original statements in quotations. Referring to the Ozark dome: (P. 127.) "It is a region that has been repeatedly upraised and planed off, until in the middle portion the oldest known' rocks only are exposed." Does he mean that the St. Francois mountains, which have always been considered as lying on the eastern flank of the Ozark dome, are the middle of the dome? Or does he mean that the Cambrian rocks of the generally-accepted middle are the oldest known rocks ? Certainly not the latter, and if the former, his idea of the middle of the dome is not in accord with that of others who are familiar with the region. (P. 138.) " . . . the ore-deposits are definitely associated with, or localized by, geologic structures of some kind that .produce in effect basins in which' the underground waters are impounded, or their flow retarded." This statement does not appear to be altogether consistent with the facts, since the ore- bodies of the Joplin district, as the rule, occur in those parts of the Mississippian formation which have a tendency to accel¬erate the flow of ground-water rather than retard it. I might name the open, breeciated ground near Joplin, Webb City, and Oronogo as especially noteworthy illustrations. The ore-bodies, everywhere, occur in positions where there must have been a free and copious circulation of dilute lead- and zinc-solutions in the presence of reducing constituents. The following notes on the Whopper and adjoining mines in the Gunnison district of Colorado mere made in the spring of this year. The time chosen for the author to visit the region was, unfortunately, the most unfavorable of an exceptionably unfavorable year. About the middle of May all the hill slopes, which at this period of the pear are generally covered with pasture, were thickly covered with snow. The unusually large precipitation of this Tear caused loacal mountain torrents at every few hundred feet, which wore away the oft foothills into gulches, gouged great chasms out of the roads, and transformed miles of usually dry soil into dangerous quagmires. Travel was totally interrupted for weeks, except on horseback or afoot, and even then with great difficulty and some danger. The Whopper mine is situated on the Whopper Mountain, about two miles from the headwaters of Rock Creek, and on the right hank of that stream. The Whopper Creek flows into Rock Creek horn the east, and, by a precipitous descent, offers excellent facilities for its utilization as a source of power. This stream, which pours past the picturesque Whopper Cabin about thirty tons of water a minute, has a fall of 100 feet in 400 yards, and is said to be a stream of some size, even at the seasons of the year when drought prevails. The Whopper claim extends down the hill a distance of about 250 feet to its intersection with the Whopper Creek (on the other side of which is a small tunnel on its extension called the "Teller") and over the steep hill northwest to the limits of the claim about 1250 feet. The part of the mountain in which this mine is situated is remarkable for its splendid forest, the spruce, fir, and quaking asp covering the mountain-sides with a green growth of valuable timber. The distance from Gothic City to this mine is about eight miles along the valleys of East River and Rock Creek, and on the divide which separates them. The elevation of Gothic City is given from the engineer's notes as 9500 feet above sea-level, and the mean of several observations with a Beck watch-barometer made the elevation of Whopper Cabin (which is about fifteen feet above the floor of the Whopper upper tunnel) about 1260 feet above Skiles's Cabin in Gothic City. THE only investigations on record of the reactions occurring during the Bessemer blow are of charges containing a large percentage of manganese, with the exception of two partial analyses by Snelus and Barker of the. English method, where a low percentage of manganese was used. They do not give the analysis of the spiegel, nor do they report any graphitic carbon after the first stage of the process. Both report only traces of manganese after the first stage until the addition of spiegel. The slags corresponding to the samples of metal were not analyzed.

The silver-ore-deposits of the famous district of Cerro de Pasco were discovered in 1630 by Huari-Capcha, an Indian shepherd. In the early part of its history, the district yielded enormous riches. The records from 1784 to 1846 (excluding five years, 1821-25, during which civil war prevailed) show a product of 2,323,526 lbs. of silver; and the value of the total product since the discovery may be estimated at about $565,000,000. The town of Cerro de Pasco is situated in the province of the same name, department of Junin, Peru, 14,250 feet above sea-level. The nearest railway station is on the line of the Callao and Cerro de Pasco R.R., at a distance of about three days' travel on horseback. The population of the town numbers about 6000, mostly native Indians. Mines.—The mines are mainly located in the immediate neighborhood of the town and partly even under the principal streets, being distributed in several very large open cuts 250 to 350 feet deep called tajos, which extend in a nearly direct north and south line west of the town and are known as Tajo de Santa Rosa, Tajo Tingo or Portachuelo, Cajac Graude, Cajac Chico, Salsipuedes, Avella Fuerte, and several smaller ones. Tajo de Santa Rosa, the largest and most southerly, is closely connected on its north side with Tajo Tingo; while the others are entirely separate and lie northward in the order given ; the extreme ends of the series being about a mile apart. Besides these, there are Tajo Descubridora a short distance east of Sta. Rosa and Tajo Matagente, about half a mile north of the main plaza in the town of Cerro de Pasco. The argentiferous deposit consists mainly of a ferruginous sandstone, while the neighboring country-rock is limestone, conglomerate and slate. This chapter is written primarily from the standpoint of development of flotation processes for treatment of specific ores. However, most of the principles and techniques discussed are equally applicable to other forms of applied flotation research such as improvement of procedures in existing plants and development of new reagents or methods without reference to specific ores. Because it is not possible to cover this subject in detail here, much of the material presented is in the form of a guide to the literature, with emphasis on readily available, English language publications. Details are included only if considered to be widely applicable or not readily accessible in the literature. Related subjects which are covered elsewhere in this volume, such as flowsheet design and statistical techniques, are not emphasized in this chapter. The material presented is intended primarily for those familiar with the theory and practice of flotation, but with limited experience in applied flotation research. It may be of value to the experienced investigator as well, by calling to his attention some useful viewpoints or techniques that he may have overlooked. It has often been said that flotation is more of an art than a science. In- deed much of the knowledge of flotation behavior is empirical. However, the unsystematic, artisan approach to flotation problems results only in an ac- cumulation of unrelated data. Like any other physical or chemical process, flotation is amenable to investigation by systematic experimental methods. The experiments should be based, as far as possible, on an understanding of the natural laws that govern the process and on good experimental procedures. SAMPLING OF A DEPOSIT In working out a flotation process for a mineral deposit, no step is more important than that of obtaining a suitable sample or samples. Experimental procedures cannot compensate for the lack of a representative sample. Methods of sampling a deposit have been published elsewhere,l-4 but a few points are of special importance from the standpoint of flotation. First, the sample should be representative of the deposit, not only in respect to chemical composition, but also in respect to mineralogical composition and degree of dissemination of the valuable minerals. Laboratory data .show that the gas-oil ratio performance of non-uniform porosity limestones produced by solution gas drive is sensitive to producing rate and to fluid properties. Nan-uniform porosity limestones are those for which laboratcry solution and external gas drive tests yield considerably different relative permeability ratio characterislics. The oil recovery performance by solution gas drive depends directly on the number of gas bubbles formed. Laboratory rates of pressure decline, which are 100 to 10,000 times greater than normal field rates. cause the formation of an unusually large number of gas bubbles. This results in abnormally high oil recovery efficiencies. Since it is impractical to reproduce the number of bubbles formed under field conditions, laboratory solution gas drive data on non-uniform porosity limestones are therefore not directly applicable to field operations. However, certain laboratory data can be used to make a conservative estimate of field performance. The concepts presented in this paper indicate the possibility that increased field oil recoveries may he obtained from non-uniform porosity limestones by rap- idly reducing reservoir pressure for a short interval of time. It has yet to be established that significant improvements in oil recovery from such reservoirs can he realized by varying the pressure decline rate within limits possible in the field. However, the possibility that recovery may be increased in this manner warrants further study. INTRODUCTION Limestone reservoir rocks can be divided into two general classes according to the nature of their pore space. One class has a comparatively uniform pore system composed mainly of voids between grains of the rock (intergranular type porosity). The other class, in addition to having intergranular porosity, has a secondary pore system composed of combinations of solution cavities, fractures, etc., and is considered to have non-uniform porosity. It has been shown in a previous publication' that the laboratory measured gas-oil flow behavior of uniform type porosity limestones is essentially the same for a test simulating a field solution gas drive as for one simulating an external gas drive. Use of the Weisseizbevg goniometer for the study of the morphology of whisker crystals and transfer of the results to a stereograplzic projection are described. While in almost all instances a complete and rapid solution is obtained with a purely gaphical treatment, an absolute analytical treatment applicable to difficult cases is given. Examples are given for determination of growth direction and external features of a crystal, for detection of 'twintzittg, and for establislting the orientation relntionships in a kinked whisker crystal. We give here a method for the use of the Weissen-berg goniometerl" in the study of orientation relationships in "whisker" (micro) crystals3-8 and direct transference of the data to the stereographic projection. The operations are straightforward and require no involved calculations: in almost all cases solely graphical treatment is adequate. In a few complex instances, a more exact analytic method may be required. In the method, not only are equatorial reflections of an oscillation photograph used, but also those on higher layer lines, or those not occurring on a recognized layer line. Such reflections off the zero level are often essentialy to detect the presence of twinning. The method is particularly suitable for examination of whisker crystals since the axial or growth direction is almost always one of high symmetry, permitting a more restricted oscillation range to obtain the necessary reflections and an accordingly shorter exposure time. The method is also applicable when there is no lattice-related external symmetry, and is as well able to identify external crystal surfaces, when such exist, with the aid of an optical beam. Thus growth direction, identification of lateral faces, twinning, and orientation relationships in a kinked crystal can be established. A test for the Eshelby twist6-8 can readily be made. The method can be used for orientation, for structure analysis, and as an aid in the identification of an unknown crystal. Moving-film techniques have previously been employed variously for crystal-orientation studies.1,2,9-13 In particular, use of the Weissenberg method for orientation determination has been reported by Wooster and wooster.14 While their method derives the same data as here described, it differs in depending on the tracing of constant p streaks, a less than dependable phenomenon with small specimens, a few microns or less in cross section. The Laue method can and has been used for orientation studies of microcrystals,15 e.g., 2 p in cross section, but requires the extreme intensity and concentration from a microfocus tube to obtain reasonable exposure time. PRINCIPLES OF THE PRESENT METHOD Consider a crystal of random orientation with respect to the oscillation axis in a Weissenberg goniometer. Its diffraction pattern need not necessarily result in recognizable layer lines. In Fig. 1, a stereo-graphic projection of the reference sphere is given with the equatorial plane XZ normal to the oscillation axis Y, and the X-ray beam directed from X towards 2. The great circle ZZ is then normal to the beam, and the axes are right-handed. IT appears now that the conflict with the totalitarian states will be a long-drawn-out struggle. The course of this war up to now indicates that this may well be the first major conflict where man power has not been the vital and determining factor. Mechanized warfare has made it possible for relatively small, well-equipped groups to outmaneuver and defeat large armies which lack the necessary modern equipment. Under these circumstances, ultimate victory becomes a matter of resources and productive ability. The important question is not how many soldiers can he put into the field, but the volume and speed in producing the armaments essential to ensure a victory. The resources available to the opposing nations and the efficiency of their systems of enterprise and production will be primary factors in determining the ultimate outcome. Germany had a head start of eight years in the armament race, and it is not easy to overcome such an advantage overnight.

In a series of charts this paper presents the composition of all gas mixtures, composed of the elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, which at temperatures from 1000° to 1800°F are in equilibrium with (1) austenite of various carbon contents, (2) iron and iron carbide, (3) graphite, (4) iron and its oxide. THIS paper presents the results of calculations made to determine the proportions of CO, CO2, CH4, H2, H2O and N2 in gas mixtures which, at temperatures from 1000" to 1800°F, satisfy, individually, the following conditions: (1) equilibrium with carbon steel of specified carbon content throughout the stable 7 iron region; (2) equilibrium with iron and iron carbide, both above and below the eutectoid temperature; (3) equilibrium with graphite; (4) equilibrium with iron and its oxide. From these data a new type of chart has been prepared which permits one to determine, from a room-temperature analysis of the furnace gas in question, the effect of the gas upon the steel at furnace temperature. Thus a guide is provided as to the carbon content which will result and as to the possibility of oxidation or sooting. All of the atmospheres commonly used in the commercial heat treatment of steel are composed of some or all of the simple constituents CO, CO2, CH4, H2, H2O and N2, and also in some cases oxygen or higher hydrocarbons. As the gas mixture is heated certain alterations in the proportions of the constituents take place, and at the temperature of the furnace the composition is, in general, not at all that of the entering gas. If equilibrium in the gas phase is presumed a calculation involving the use of certain fundamental data predicts for a certain temperature the carburizing, decarburizing, or sooting characteristics of a given atmosphere, and, upon the additional assumption of equilibrium between gas and metal, also the oxidizing ability of the gas and the ultimate carbon content of the steel. The extent to which these predictions are fulfilled will depend upon how closely the assumptions of equilibrium are realized in any particular case. Although at lower temperatures equilibrium is often not reached, there is considerable evidence indicating that above about 1000°F the approach to equilibrium in the gas phase is generally substantially complete, particularly in the vicinity of the steel which acts as a powerful catalyst in promoting reactions in the gas phase. The extent of the gas-metal reactions is commonly affected essentially by the sojourn at temperature; equilibrium with respect to carbon, for example, is accomplished simply by continuing the treatment long enough. However close the approximation of equilibrium may be in any instance, the above mentioned calculation indicates the condition of the steel at equilibrium, and at the present time this is the only basis of control of a furnace atmosphere. The effect at elevated temperature of a gas of a certain composition at room temperature upon a given steel has customarily been judged by first calculating from gas equilibrium constants the proportions of the gas constituents at the temperature of the steel, then comparing certain of these with the proportions known to be in carbon or oxygen equilibrium. This process is tedious and time-consuming, in particular because the calculation generally involves a series of successive approximations; and since some knowledge and familiarity with this type of computation are required, not everyone needing the information has been, in the past, in a position to obtain it. Measuring The Economic Viability Of Resource Projects (A Western Surface Coal Project) The bankers approach to the analysis of a new "green fields" mining project is similar but different from the approach that the pining company might take. The purpose of this paper shall be to discuss the techniques that are used by mining companies and bankers as they try to measure the economic viability of mining projects. The analysis of these new projects (by both the mining companies and the banker) is based on a projected revenue stream and not on historical earnings or past perfomance because these projects are start up situations with no history to look to. The starting point in the analysis of these projections is the choice of the assumptions to be used in preparing these projections. After the assumptions have been determined and the projections are prepared then the projections are submitted to various tests in order to determine whether the project measures up to previously agreed upon minimum standards. In order to illustrate the analytical procedures used in evaluating a mineral project the writer has constructed a hypothetical case involving the development of a western surface coal mine (Property). The basic data in connection with this hypothetical new project is described in the next section of this paper. After the Description of the Project is a section which shows the type of analysis that a mining company might prepare in order to approach a bank for a loan and the final section illustrates the type of analysis that a bank might prepare in evaluating this loan request. Description Of The Project or Basic Data In Connection With Undeveloped Western Surface Coal Property An independent mining/geological Consultant's report has been completed on the Property which confirms that the Property contains 175 million tons of economically recoverable coal subdivided into the following reserve categories in accordance with U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey definitions: Measured or Proven 90,000,000 Indicated or Probable 50,000,000 Inferred or Possible 35,000,000 The owners of the reserves have chosen to drill up those reserves that are nearest to the subcrop and have not spent as much time on those portions of the Property which are on the fringes of the deposit where the overburden is thicker because the stripping ratio and hence the operating costs and capital requirements are higher down dip. The proven reserves are based on an average thickness of 80 feet, of which a mining recovery of 90% is projected. The overburden thickness varies from 0' to 280' with an average thickness of 127'. The overburden consists mainly of scoria, sandstone, gravel, shale and silty clay. 134 holes were cored (and analysis done on five foot increments) in the measured reserve on the following spacing: 100 foot centers to define the burn line; 1,320 foot centers to define the early mining areas; 2,640 foot centers to identify the later mining areas.

Sulfur balances calculated from operating data covering thirty-five blast furnaces indicate that approximately 92 per cent. of the total sulfur charged enters with the coke, 7 per cent. with the ore, and 1 per cent. with the stone.. Most of the sulfur is carried from the furnace by means of the slag, the total amount eliminated being the product of the slag volume and the percentage of sulfur it contains. Additional sulfur in the charge must be eliminated either by increasing the percentage of sulfur in the slag or the quantity of slag. From relations found between slag volume and coke consumption and sulfur in the coke and slag volume, curves have been prepared showing the relative value of blast-furnace coke as its sulfur varies from 1 per cent. CHARCOAL was the predominant blast-furnace fuel until 1838, when it was found, by the operation of a 2-ton experimental furnace, that anthracite could also be used. This information was a stimulus to the iron industry, particularly in eastern Pennsylvania where anthracite was available at low cost. The production of anthracite pig iron increased steadily and, in 1855, its tonnage exceeded that of charcoal iron. Of the 680 furnaces in operation in 1874, the 226 using anthracite produced nearly one-half the total tonnage. In 1869, the production of coke furnaces exceeded that of charcoal furnaces and, in 1875, coke surpassed anthracite as a metallurgical fuel. In 1907, the output of anthracite pig dropped well below a million tons and its present significance is largely historical. In recent years, the production of coke has gone hand in hand with the production of pig iron and it has gradually attained the position it now occupies as a universal blast-furnace fuel. Charcoal, however, has great merit as a blast-furnace fuel chiefly because of its freedom from ash and sulfur. The harmful effect of the latter and the necessity of keeping the percentage of this element in pig iron at a minimum are well recognized. Other contaminating elements can be reduced to specified limits in the steelmaking process, but the control of sulfur belongs essentially to the blast furnace. WHEN Germany invaded Poland in September, 1939, the only operating helium plant in the United States was that near Amarillo. Texas, supplied with helium-bearing natural gas from the near-by Cliffside gas field. Today the Bureau of Mines has five plants capable of producing more than 25 times the prewar helium output of the Amarillo plant. Two of the plants have received Army-Navy "E" flags for their part in the faraway "Battle of the Atlantic," where heliumfilled Navy blimps chased Adolf Hitler's submarines away from American shores. Meteorologists, watching balloons carried high into the stratosphere by helium, determined weather conditions that influenced the selection of D-day and dates for other military operation. Demand for helium doubled overnight when the Navy decided to expand its lighter-than-air activities; and as the blimp patrol proved effective, the helium demand became ever greater. A tribute to the success of the Bureau of Mines in meeting the demand for helium was paid by the late Secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox, in a letter to the Secretary of the Interior on April 10, 1944. EARLY this year the Board of Directors announced that, through the generous gift of past-president W. L. Saunders, a gold medal to be awarded for distinguished achievement in mining had been estab-lished. At the December meeting of the Board the medal committee reported that it recommended that the first medal be awarded to David William Brunton for "development and exposition of the principles and prac-tice of ore sampling; for systematic daily mapping of mine geology; for the Brunton mining compass; and for engineering achievements in connection with great tunnels." The formal presentation of the medal will be at the din-ner, on Feb. 16, in connec-tion with the annual meet-ing. Mr. Brunton, like several other prominent Institute members, was born in Can-ada, and came to the United States when he was twenty-four years old. He had then been in civil en-gineering work for three years and after a year more of it, deciding that mining was more attrac-tive he spent two years at the University of Michigan doing advanced work in geology a n d chemistry. His first mining engage-ment was with the Dakota and San Juan Mining Co., at Mineral Point, Ouray County, Colo. That was in June, 1875, and the young engineer had to travel 230 miles by trail from the then nearest railroad station at Pueblo. Having to come out because the company did not get in enough supplies to last through the winter he became metallurgist for the Hunt, Douglas & Stewart Co., at Georgetown, Colo. When the Hunt and Douglas plant proved a success, H. A. Taylor, the father of Mr. Brunton's later partner, Frank M. Taylor, engaged him to build the Clear Creek Reduction Works. Eighteen months later he built the Native Silver Mining Co. mill at Caribou and a year later a mill at Silver Peak, Nev., that was so successful that the principal owner shut it down to freeze out the minority stockholders. The winter of 1879 found him at Leadville where he did engineering work for the Robert E. Lee, Duncan, Wolftone, A. Y. & Minnie, and Dinero mines, eventually becoming manager of the Colonel Sellers. In 1886 he was called in on apex-side-line litigation at Aspen with the result that he went there to develop the mines for economic and legal pur-poses, and later became the manager of three of them.
