IN classification of pulps bearing magnetized ferromagnetic particles, depolarizing is of great importance. If size separation is to be effective, particles must be individual rather than in floes. Depolarizing is also practiced in heavy medium separations in which ferrosilicon or magnetite is the medium. When particles of ferromagnetic material have been removed from a magnetic field, residual magnetism causes agglomeration. The term depolarizing refers to the operation of reducing or eliminating this residual magnetism and may thus be considered magnetic deflocculation. The terms demagnetizing and randomizing are also used. At the Research Laboratory of Oliver Iron Mining Div. in Duluth a method was developed for measuring depolarization of the pulp of ferromagnetic material. Experiments were made with Mesabi taconite,' a natural magnetite of low coercive force. Ferromagnetic materials of higher coercive force, such as lodestone or the artificial magnetite produced by reduction roasting of hematite, present a more difficult problem, which was not within the scope of this investigation. It is possible, however, that some of the techniques evolved for measuring and calculating electrical characteristics of alternating current coils would be of use in depolarizing high coercive force material, particularly in conjunction with high-frequency alternating current, as proposed by Hartig and others.'," Properties of Ferromagnetic Materials:'7 Experimental work, described below, has shown that if a sample in the magnetized state is heated above the Curie point and cooled, much of the preferred orientation is destroyed and the sample is substantially depolarized. It has been thought that when the sample cools below the Curie point the domains cancel each other, leaving a zero net moment. However, such particles still exhibit a tendency to cohere, and undoubtedly this is caused by the forces of residual magnetism. -AS measured by the percent depolarization, this tendency is reproducible for any sample upon repeated heating above the Curie point and subsequent cooling and is independent of the initial state of magnetization. It is postulated, therefore, that as the material is cooled below the Curie point the domains in any particle do not completely cancel each other, but rather are preferentially oriented to some extent. Mechanism of Depolarizing with Alternating Current Magnetic Fields: It is believed that when ferromagnetic material is passed through an alternating magnetic field, depolarizing occurs in the decaying portion of the field. As the particles pass through the portion of highest intensity they become magne- tized. If the particles are not free to move, the polarities of the particles will be reversed (by a mechanism similar to that described above for magnetism) at a frequency equal to that of the applied field. As the material moves through the decaying field, intensity levels become such that a domain does not completely reverse, but stops on an axis of easy magnetization. By the time the material reaches the point of zero field intensity, a state of fairly random orientation of domains is achieved. If conditions are such as to give a completely random orientation, the particle will have little or no external magnetic field, and a pulp of such particles will be depolarized. Previous Work In 1918 E. W. Davis was granted a patent for demagnetization of magnetite pulps.' His method consisted of passing the pulp through a tapered coil, activated by alternating current of normal frequency (60 cycle). This method, with minor modifications, has been used almost universally in all pilot plants and commercial installations in which depolarization of low coercive force materials has been required. Hartig, Onstad and Foot2,3 avd made a detailed study of the factors involved in depolarizing both low (below 100 oersteds) and high (above 100 oersteds) coercive force material. They developed a method for evaluating the relative degree of depolarization of any pulp based on the settling characteristics of the pulp. THE manufacture of nickel-clad steel plate and the fabrication of articles from it has progressed far enough to permit a general description of the working methods used. The manufacture of sheets made up of layers of nickel and steel is not new as a sheet of this character was patented in Germany in 1893. Present development differs mainly in the size and finish of the product. The earlier light-gage highly finished products have been limited in their application due to their similarity, in certain respects, to electro-plated and highly finished alloy sheets. The new product is a relatively heavy plate 1/4 or 3/s in. thick and heavier, with one side coated with nickel, the weight of nickel being of the order of 10 per cent of the whole. The finish is that of hot-rolled steel plate.

The USBM has developed new and improved physical beneficiation techniques for economically recovering potash minerals from high-clay and low-grade ore from the Permian Basin of New Mexico. With the depletion of the high-grade ores a need for changes in industry's standard methods of recovery is a must. Technology may be improved in the beneficiation of the ore prior to mineral flotation and in brine clarification from the desliming phase to effect a reduction of losses of fine potash and brine in the disposal of the clay slimes. This report summarizes the results of these tests and demonstrates the feasibility of producing products that meet the requirements of the agriculture market, namely, 95% KCl equivalent to 60% K2O with recoveries ranging between 80 and 90%.

Laboratory experiments simulating in-situ copper recovery from primary sulfide ores in sulfuric acid systems pressurized with oxygen are reported. Copper extraction and acid consumption data are correlated with temperature in the range 50 to 150°C and quenched pH in the range 0.25 to 2. Adverse changes in the chemical composition of the leach solution and the formation of gangue-mineral alteration products and secondary sulfides can severely limit the extraction of copper above 90°C. Keeping the pH below the self-buffered value of about 2 and the temperature below about 110°C produces the maximum extraction rates. Forcing the pH too low not only results in excessively high acid consumption but may also limit the extraction of copper at temperatures above 100°C.

IN this paper, no attempt will be made to theorize on subsidence. Only known data and actual facts will be given, with a few exceptions noted where other factors and outside influences tend to change sub-sidence directly resulting from porphyry caving. The area under observation is known as the Southeast Extension of the East orebody. The orebody is irregular in outline and dips to the south and the east, extending in depth from about 425 ft. below the sur-face to 1050 ft. below the surface. In the upper horizon, the orebody is about 400 ft. long and 150 ft. wide. At 720 ft. below the surface, the ore outline is approximately 450 by 170 ft.; 70 ft. below this, it is 500 by 110 ft., with an extension at the north end to the east 270 by 120 ft. From this elevation to about 900 ft. below the surface, the ore spreads out to the east and south, being about 700 by 500 ft. between these vertical limits. Below this it pinches out and at 1060 ft. below the surface is only 100 by 100 ft. The nearest point of the orebody-which is on the northwest side-is 600 ft. southeast of the Sacramento shaft. The country rock is all porphyry. Fig. 1 is a vertical east-west section showing orebody and original surface. The surface over the orebody was fairly regular and in this area and adjacent to it were portions of the surface plant, roads, and the main plant railroad to the concentrator. Fig. 2 is a map of the surface over the porphyry area. Caving operations started in April, 1925, at the approximate top of the orebody. The first lift was on the 600-ft. level; the ore was extracted by means of the Morenci timbered slide method and was from 425 to 455 ft. below the surface over an area of about 22,000 sq. ft. This lift was finished in May, 1926. The second lift, on the 650-ft. level, was already in production by May, 1926, so extraction of ore was continuous. This lift was 48 ft. high and covered an area of about 30,000 sq. ft. The ore from this lift was extracted by means of a modified Morenci timbered slide method. This lift was finished in March, 1927. The Florida hard-rock field extends from Suwanee and Columbia Counties in northwest Florida to south of Croom, Florida, in Hernando County. This area is approximately 100 miles long and varies from 2 to 30 miles in width. Florida hard-rock phosphate was discovered at Hale Springs, about one mile northwest of the town of Dunnellon, Marion County, in the year 1888, by Alber-tus Voight, who lived within a few hundred yards of the spring. Soon after this discovery there was a great influx of land speculators and wildcat operators into the vicinity of Dunnellon. A few years later phosphate was found in Alachua, Levy, Citrus and Hernando Counties, and a great number of small crude plants were built from Newberry, Alachua County, all the way to Croom, Hernando County. Phosphate was found in many places as "outcrops." Looking for outcrops was the first method used by the early prospectors in searching for deposits. Several years passed before any systematic method of prospecting was used. Early Mining The early method of mining hard-rock phosphate was with picks and shovels, wheelbarrows, mules and wagons. The pick-and-shovel method was used altogether until about 1900, when some of the larger operators began to use railroad-type steam shovels of from ½ to I-yd. capacity Picks and shovels, with negro labor loading the phosphate ore (called "matrix") into wooden side-dump skip-cars, was continued until about 1907. From the discovery of hard-rock phosphate until approximately 1905, overburden was removed with mules and scrapers. At some places, the overburden was loaded into side-dump skip-cars by negro laborers and the cars were then pulled up an incline with a steam hoisting engine. The maximum depth of overburden that could be economically removed by hand labor, mules and scrapers was approximately 15 feet. About 1905 one of the companies erected a producer-gas power- I house near Dunnellon and generated its own electricity and about the same time the larger companies began using hydraulic methods for the removal of overburden. From the year 1888 through the year 1939 approximately 75 companies were operating at one time or another in the hard-rock territory, on approximately 500 locations. The hard-rock deposits are more irregular and have higher mining costs than the pebble-rock deposits, therefore 1 they have not been competitive in the domestic market, but because of the higher grade of the hard rock it is in demand for I the export trade. Discovery of phosphate outside of the United States has made it increasingly difficult in recent years for the hard-rock companies to survive, so today i only three companies are operating. These

THIS paper is intended, in the light of recent investigations, to call attention to some of the essential features of good practice in sampling and mine-valuation. Mine-sampling may be divided broadly into two classes : (1) development-sampling and computation of ore-reserves; and, (2) stope-sampling and estimation of stope-values. DEVELOPMENT-SAMPLING. It is with development-sampling only that this paper deals-the term development being taken to mean the opening-up of a mine by cross-cuts, drives, connections, etc., preparatory to actual extraction of the ore for milling. In development-sampling the work of the sampler and the consequent estimation of the probable value of the mine or portions of the mine, as the case may be, cannot be verified until a later period, when the ground thus sampled has been exploited; hence, extreme care and accuracy are essential. Moreover, the development-sampler has to foresee and allow for contingencies which may arise when stoping is started. It follows that the sampling, in development-work, demands familiarity with the conditions likely to be encountered later in actual mining. In stopes, on the other hand, sampling is clone under actual working-conditions, and the sampler's valuations are immediately checked by the gold-output, or in some cases by a second sampling of the broken ore. A stope-sampler therefore need not be an experienced miner, though he should possess sound technical training and work accurately. Should he be somewhat inexperienced, be soon has his errors discovered for him, and learns to avoid them. Taking these facts into account, it is obvious that a mining company employing two or more samplers should

A capillary tube variable volume cell is described, which has operated satisfactorily over a range of 100°F and 3,500 psi to 550°F and 1,500 psi. The cell contents are entirely visible over the length of the capillary with the exception of a space at the top amounting to three per cent of the total volume. Observations on the critical behavior of simple systems have been greatly facilitated by the apparatus, it being possible to establish the critical conditions for a particular mixture in the course of a day's run. INTRODUCTION Many types of apparatus have been designed for obtaining data on the phase relationships of hydrocarbon systems. Such apparatus can in general be subdivided into two classifications; (l), indirect measurement of phase volume, and (2), direct visual observation of phase volume, each of which has outstanding advantages and disadvantages. Indirect measurement of phase volume requires the use of rather elaborate apparatus including internal probes in which are located the device for determining the locus of the interface between phases. Such equipment is by its very nature costly, and is complex from the standpoint of operating technique. Probing techniques can be used, however, over wide ranges of temperature and pressure with a high degree of reproducibility. Apparatus for visual observation of phase behavior obviously has the advantage of enabling the experimenter to see exactly what takes place, but because the material to be tested is contained in a cell constructed of both metal and glass, is limited severely as to the temperature range of operation. Furthermore. the maximum pressure usually is limited by the choice of material used for sealing the glass to the metal, and by the strength of the glass itself. In the interest of increased efficiency of observation, as much of the cell as possible should be visible to the eye. Glass capillary tubes have been used successfully but have always given difficulty at the metal-to-glass seal. An apparatus has been devised to overcome the problems of sealing and resistance to temperature effects that have heretofore been the limiting factor with glass apparatus in the observation of phase volumes at elevated temperature and pressure. APPARATUS The objective which dictated the general arrangement of the apparatus (Figs. 1 and 2) was simplicity of operation. The air bath, A, was constructed of an iron framework to which was attached approximately one inch of glass wool bats which were covered on the outside with "Masonite." A roughly octagonal center piece was installed to provide forced circulation of the air by the fan, B, past the heaters, D, cell, F, and thermoregulator, C, respectively. The entire top of the box is removable to facilitate charging of the cell and to permit easy maintenance. A model for the low-temperature peak, LTP, in fcc metals is presented. In high stacking fault energy metals, e.g., aluminum and nickel, it is proposed that a reversible dislocation glide and climb process might give rise to the observed high relaxation strengths and activation energies equivalent to volume self-diffusion values. In low stacking fault energy metals such as copper, gold, and silver, dislocation climb is energetically unfavorable at T < 0.5 Tm and the relaxation process is therefore mainly one of reversible glide. This model is used to explain the effect of a change in grain size and impurities on the LTP. THE low-temperature grain boundary damping peak, LTP, in spectroscopically pure aluminum,&apos; copper,17&apos; gold,2 nickel,3 and silver4 has recently been the subject of a detailed investigation by our laboratory. The main results are summarized in Table I. An empirical relationship was found between the peak relaxation strength, AE, and the width of the dissociated dislocation, do,* given by: do = µa2/24p? (Ref. 5) [I] where p is the shear modulus, y is the stacking fault energy,6-8 and a is the lattice parameter, Table 11. 4E is plotted against do in Fig. 1. Two regions are apparent: region (a)! which contains all but one of the metals, where AE decreases linearly with increasing do, i.e,, AE 1/do; and region (b), where ?E is approximately independent of do. A similar trend is observed when the ratio Qp/QL is plotted as a function of do, Fig. 2. (Qp and Ql are the activation energies for the peak and for lattice diffusion, respectively). In the past, when Qp and QL were found to be comparable, the relaxation peak was explained in terms of grain boundary sliding.10 The equivalence of Q, and Qb. the activation energy for grain boundary diffusion, prompted the suggestion that it was a consequence of reversible grain boundary migration on an atomic scale." A new model for the LTP, which is based on the experimental relationships in Figs. 1 and 2, is presented. In region (a) it is suggested that stress relaxation occurs through the reversible glide and climb of grain boundary dislocations; in region (b) only reversible glide can take place. The resultant effect on the grain boundary might be sliding or "a bowing out", but, since the total distance moved will be 50A, the atomic movements are considered of primary im- portance. It must be emphasized that this is only a qualitative model, but at the moment it appears the most likely way to explain the widely varying, but re-

Oil and gas production in North Central Texas has been found in sands and limestones in the Cisco, Canyon, Strawn and Bend series of Pennsylvanian age and in lime of pre-Pennsylvanian age. Production ranges in depth below the surface from 150 to 4500 ft.; a few wells have been drilled to depths in excess of 5500 ft. and penetrated rocks of pre-Cambrian age. In Table 1, the average depth of the pools is shown. No mention, however, is made in this table of approximately 30,000 bbl. of oil produced in Callahan County from a pre-Pennsylvanian pay, presumably the Ellenberger, and an excess of 1,000,000 bbl. of oil produced from limestone, which has been identified as Silurian in the south part of Young County. This well is being produced at the present time. In Table 1 a great many pools of minor importance are listed, which are merely productive spots, and throughout the various producing counties there are numerous similar spots, which might be listed as pools. Their production, however, is listed in the county totals. In Table 2, the totals of the oil wells, gas wells, and dry holes drilled before Jan. 1,1935, include only wells on which records are available to the writer. In Brown, Callahan and Shackelford counties 2924 very shallow wells (150 to 600 ft. deep) have been drilled, on which the record is not available. Possibly there are other wells that were drilled before the district was adequately scouted. No classification as to the depths of this total of 30,644 wells is available at present. Initially, nearly all the oil wells of North Central Texas produced gas, and several areas producing dry gas have been partly developed. A number of casinghead gasoline plants strip the gasoline from the gas produced with the oil, and the manufacture of carbon black is an important industry in Stephens County. Dry and residue gas are marketed through systems serving the various towns of the district, San Angelo to the southwest and the cities of Forth Worth and Dallas to the east. Considerable gas is used in repressuring several pools, the most important of which are the Stover of Brown County and the Cook of Shackelford County. The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to Mining and Metallurgy and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes, It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense. J. V. W. Reynders is chairman of the Endowment Committee. Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund THE Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund, consisting of $100,000, was given the Institute in 1929 by the family of Colonel Mudd who had served the Institute as Director, Vice-president and on many important committees. His long career of distinguished professional and public service is fittingly commemorated by this fund. The income is available for support of research and other special purposes. In view of Colonel Mudd&apos;s life work with the nonferrous metals and his keen interest in the younger men of the profession it is purposed to apply the fund particularly to the benefit of these two. Control of income is exercised by the Board of Directors on recommendation of a Committee consisting of the President and Secretary, ex officiis, together with three others selected by the Board. The Committee consists at present of the following members: W. H. Bassett, President; H. Foster Bain, Secretary; Harvey S. Mudd serving until October, 1931; Edgar Rickard serving till October, 1932; George Otis Smith serving until October, 1933. On recommendation of this Committee the Board has authorized as a first project the preparation of a series of small books designed especially to be helpful to the Junior Members. These are now being written and it is hoped will be available for distribution in 1931. The list includes: A Brief History of American Mining, by T. A. Rickard; Mining Costs, Why and What, by Arthur Notman; Introduction to Mineral Economics, by H. Foster Bain and T. T. Read; Choice of Methods—A Record of Experience in Making Decisions, with chapters by W. H. Bassett, F. W. Bradley, E. DeGolyer, Howard N. Eavenson, A. B. Parsons, J. V. W. Reynders, L. D. Ricketts, Robert E. Tally, Pope Yeatman and others. One other book is projected but final selection has not been made. Unit Rig & Equipment Co., manufacturer of Lectra Haul trucks, is continually studying methods of reducing the operating costs of large haulage trucks. Reduction of haulage system operating costs is an important goal that equipment operators and equipment manufacturers constantly try to improve on. One of the most variable and important factors affecting operating costs is actual truck operating practices. An examination was centered on methods to optimize truck utilization. It was found that a very effective method of accomplishing this goal would be an automatic truck control (ATC) system to automatically control a fleet of haulage trucks in a predetermined pattern. Economic studies were conducted which showed a very favorable reduction in mine operating costs by use of an ATC system. In 1970, Unit Rig & Equipment Co., in conjunction with SAAB-SCANIA began preliminary development of adapting, for truck use, a proven automated control system, previously used for train systems, small trucks, and military target vehicles. In 1974, the first prototype system was installed on a Lectra Haul M-100 and tested extensively at Unit Rig&apos;s test track in Tulsa, OK. This truck and system were then displayed publicly at the 1974 convention in Las Vegas. In 1976, the system was redesigned for production to maximize reliability, ease maintenance, and to accommodate future control and-status reporting developments proposed for haulage trucks. The new design equipment was manufactured, and a full system test will be conducted in an actual open-pit mine for an extended period to evaluate reliability, compile economic data, and obtain application information to evaluate complete mine haulage system conversions to ATC. System Description The ATC system is designed to provide automatic control of all the vehicle functions normally accomplished by the vehicle operator. The basic system consists of the on-board control equipment and the wayside control equipment. The on-board equipment receives commands from the wayside equipment and controls all the truck functions. In addition, on-board sensors monitor all critical truck functions and provide instructions to the truck and system to assure safe operation. The wayside equipment consists of a buried guidewire, block control units and a central controller which provides predetermined signals to the on-board equipment for speed control, steering, and for auxiliary functions (dumping, horn, etc.) through the guidewire located in the truck&apos;s path. The wayside equipment also controls vehicle separation, system status, and provides truck location to a central display panel. The central control panel can vary the speed level signals over any segment and can also command an emergency stop to halt all the units. [Fig. 1] illustrates a typical ATC installation. If ATC is used in operations which require flexibility and mobility at the end of the ATC guidance network, the trucks can then be operated by either radio remote control or manually to complete their assigned functions.

There are two types of shovels currently used primarily as mining tools-the stripping shovel and the quarry-mine (Q-M) shovel. The two types have basically the same features, the main difference being in size. The stripping units are giant four-crawler shovels that operate by placing overburden alongside in a mined-out area. The Q-M units, on the other hand, are two-crawler shovels that usually load into trucks or trains. Powering Systems A typical stripping or Q-M shovel is fully electric, receiving power through a trailing cable that is connected to a large motor-generator set with multiple generators. In the full Ward-Leonard system, each generator furnishes d-c power to separate motors which drive the mechanisms for the principal motions of the shovel-hoist, crowd and swing.

The principle of airborne electroniagnetic prospecting is well-known. &apos;The basic geonhysicai texts in inost cases discuss the main elements involved in electromagnetic prospecting. However. there is ceriainlv iittle information available to the public concerning he present types of airborne eiectromagnerlc systenis being flown today by both contracting companies and some of the mining companies which have their own instruments. This is unfortunate since it is difficuit for those people not conducting such operations to understand thoroughly the iarge variation in the electromagnetic instrunlents available. Basically, the aeriai electromagnetic induction method utilizes a primary or transmitting coil through which is generated an alternating magnetic field at a frequents: generally of the range of 100 to 2000 cycies per sec. This primary field links with buried conductors and generates eddy currents within them. These eddy currents in themselves generate a secondary magnetic field of the same frequencv, but generally nut-of-phase with respect to the prinlarv field. This secondarv field is detected above the ground in the pick-up or receiver coil which is tuned to the frequency of the current applied to the primary transmitter coil. One of the main problems in the development of an airborne electromagnetic system is that of maintaining constant coupling between the cransmitting and receiving coil systems. Any variations in the coupling due to relative motion between the two coils will result in an in-phase signal being induced in the receiver coil. [However, any variation in the coupling does not result in an out-of-phase signal change in the receiver coil. The first airborne eiectromagnetic svsteins which were developed utilized a large prlniarv coil set up on the aircraft with the receiving coil being towed behind in a bird, generally at the end of a cable of about 500 ft. in length. It is possible with such a system to record the out-of-phase or quadrature responses more readily than the in-phase re-sponse. One system utilizes a dual frequency method, wnereby the out-of-phase responses at two frequencies are recorded. Another system used today records a single-frequency olrt-of-phase response. Recentlv home companies have succeeded in measuring from ne air both the out-of-phase and the in-phase components. The usefulness of recording in-phase is weil-known, but unfortunately this is difficult to obtain in any towed-bird system. In order to measure the true in-phase signal, the most straightforward system is that in which both the transmitter and receiver coils .Ire affixed in space so that there is little or no relarive motion between the two coils. THE FLIGHT SYSTEM The particular system which Canadian Aero Service is using at present is mounted on a Sikorsky S-55 helicopter (Fig. 1). A record of both the in-phase and out-of-phase responses is made at a frequency of 390 cycles per sec. The transmitter coil is set on a boom mounted in the front of the helicopter; the receiver is set on a tail boom extending back from the helicopter. Separation between these coils is about 65 ft. The two coils are mounted in a vertical co-axial relationship. Having the transmitting coil in a vertical plane ensures that maximurn coupling will occur with vertical conductors rather than flat-lying conductors. Having them mounted as they are in a co-axial relationship on the helicopter ensures that maximum response will occur when the flight direction is orthogonal to the strike direction of a given conductor. Edward W. Parker,* Philadelphia, Pa.—At the New York meeting of the Institute a year ago, Mr. R. V. Norris presented a paper on anthracite mining costs, in which he gave the results of an intensive study of this subject by the Engineers&apos; Committee of the United States Fuel Administration. Within the last 30 days, the Federal Trade Commission has issued an official report on the same subject, which covers a longer period of time and comprises statistics of realization values and margins that were pot comprehended in the paper by Mr. Norris. As, however, the data utilized by Mr. Norris formed also a part of the basis for the report of the Federal Trade Commission, a brief digest of the latter may not be out of place at this meeting. The report of the Federal Trade Commission covers primarily the two calendar years 1917 and 1918, divided into five periods which furnish opportunity for the study of how the influence of certain definite factors affected either the cost of production or the price, or both, during the 24 months. The first period, January to April, 1917, which may be considered the basic period, comprised the 4 months in 1917 during which the wage agreement of May, 1916, without modification, was in effect. During this period, the labor cost on fresh-mined coal is placed by the Commission&apos;s report at $1.79 per gross ton, the total cost at $2.66, the average realization at $3.29, and the "margin" (sales realization over total f.o.b. mine cost) at $0.63. The second period covers the four months from May 1 to August 31, during which time the first of the supplemental wage agreements (supplemental to the agreement of 1916) was in effect. It was also the period during which the summer discounts were in effect and when prices were practically fixed by a voluntary agreement between the operators and the Federal Trade Commission. It was, further, the period in which the 75 cents differential on prepared sizes permitted to the individual operators by the Federal Trade Commission began; at that time, also, on account of war conditions an unusually large quantity of steam sizes were marketed at exceptionally good prices. Higher freight rates and better methods of beneficiation now may make it more economical to open inferior deposits closer to a glass factory than to work higher-grade deposits farther away. Nature of impurities and special treatments as well as common practice of sulphuric acid leaching are described. HISTORICAL concepts of the economics of the glass-sand industry are changing rapidly. The greatly expanded demand for glass containers combined with higher freight rates on raw materials and manufactured products have induced a migration of glass factories toward densely populated centers and the creation of new standards of place value for substandard sand deposits. This migration has been facilitated by the construction of pipelines to bring cheaper natural gas and liquid fuel to large cities and may be further speeded by the adoption of modern mineral dressing methods to permit economical utilization of local raw materials. Our national resources of naturally high-grade silica sand are abundant, but most of the best deposits are situated so far from large centers of population that it now costs $3.00 to $5.00 a ton to carry the sand from the mine to the optimum site for a factory making beverage bottles, scientific and electrical glassware, and miscellaneous blown and pressed ware for local markets. It follows that on the basis of freight savings alone it may be economical to use material from inferior deposits closer to the factory even though the f.O.b. cost of mining and treatment may be much higher than at a higher grade deposit farther away. Particle-size distribution is a feature of glass-sand specifications. As long as glassmakers insisted upon having their sand principally coarser than 100-mesh, any material was automatically excluded from consideration that could not be purified without fine grinding or other drastic treatment which greatly reduces the size of the quartz grains. However, re- cent large-scale tests in Norway&apos; showed that finely-crushed quartz used in a soda-lime-silica glass batch caused it to melt and become refined appreciably faster than when ordinary coarse (Belgian) sand was employed. Dust losses were negligible. Since the pre-war cost of sand was only 3 pct of the manufacturing cost of the glass, it was deemed economical to pay twice as much for crushed quartz because of the saving in wear and tear on the furnace walls. In the author&apos;s unverified opinion, sand ranging in size between 150 and 400-mesh would probably be superior to that in the more usual range of 20 to 100-mesh. Former objections to fine sand (other than dust) were doubtless fostered by the natural concentration of impurities in the finer sizes. Ordinarily the most objectionable, as well as the commonest, impurity from the standpoint of the manufacturer of any but the cheaper qualities of colored glass is iron. No natural sands are really pure silica. Even water-clear quartz crystals are likely to contain impurities in the form of solid solution as well as inclusions which cannot be eliminated except by chemical treatment that will break down the silica lattice. Pure white pegmatite quartz will usually analyze 0.01 pct or more of iron oxide, and ordinary vein quartz and the quartz grains in most
