Results are presented from tests of dynamic fluid-loss rates to cores from clay-gel water-base drilling fluids containing different commercial fluid-loss control agents (CMC, polyacrylate or smt,ch), organic viscosity reducers (quebracho and complex metal lignosulfonate) and oil at several different levels of concentration. In the dynamic system the most effective individual additives to the clay-gel drilling fluid, based on cost-equalized concentrutiom, were found to be starch and the viscosity reducers. These results do not conform with the rankings determined by API fluid-loss rests, which indicate CMC, polyacrylate and starch to be the most effective and comparable. Generally, minimum dynamic fluid-losr rates were attained at cost-equalized concentrations of additive (including thinner) of about $1.00/ bbl, or less. For chernically treated clay-gel drilling fluids, both the standard and the high-pressure API filter-loss tests were found to he inaccurate indicators of trends in dynamic fluid-loss rates under the test conditions used, particulurly for drilling muds containing viscosity reducers. From a practical field viewpoint, restrictions on the applicability of the API fluid-loss test are such that it is open to question whether or not results of this test can be used routinely with confidence as an indicator of control of down-hole fluid loss under field treating conditions. INTRODUCTION The petroleum industry spends large sums of money during drilling operations to control the fluid-loss properties of drilling fluids based on the standard API filter-loss test,' which is a static filtration system. Laboratory studies' ' of dynamic filtration have shown that in a given time period filtrate loss from a circulating mud stream is greater than from a static system and that it is a function of linear mud velocity, pressure and the properties of the drilling fluid. Ferguson and Klotz' and Horner, et al," observed that (I) the dynamic fluid-loss rates for the drilling fluids used were not related to the extrapolated API filter loss and (2) the drilling fluids with the lowest API filter losses did not have the lowest dynamic fluid-loss rates. However, there has been no published information on the relative effects on dynamic fluid-loss rate as a given drilling fluid is treated with increasing amounts of chemical additive to reduce the API filter loss. Such information is economically important because drilling-fluid costs rise rapidly as chemical requirements increase. This paper presents the results of a study of dynamic filtratioi rates to cores from a clay-gel water-base drilling fluid treated with various commercial viscosity reducers and chemical fluid-loss control agents. The dynamic fluid-. loss rates to cores are compared with the standard API filter-loss values at several different levels of additive concentration. Dynamic filtration rates were obtained in each experiment under two different simulated wellbore conditions: (1) filtration just above the bit through a new mud cake laid down dynamically on a freshly drilled formation and (2) filtration up-hole through a mud cake formed by deposition of a static filter cake on top of the initial dynamically formed cake. The latter case corresponds to the bottom-hole conditions existing above the bit when mud circulation is restarted after a stand of pipe has been added or a round trip has been made to change the bit. Except for the short-duration, high-rate filtration beneath the bit where no mud cake can form, these two conditions probably represent the two extremes of dynamic filtration. Because thickness of a dynamic mud cake formed on freshly exposed formation is limited by the shearing action of the mud stream, the filtration rate for this condition is high. On the other hand, once circulation is stopped and a static mud cake forms on top of the dynamic cake, re-starting circulation has only a small effect on the cake properties and filtration rate is much lower thereafter. A discussion of the mechanics of mud-cake deposition and dynamic filtration is outside the scope of this paper but may be found in more detail in publications by prior investigators. APPARATUS AND EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS The test equipment used to simulate the dynamic flow conditions existing during drilling was a modification of that described previously by Krueger and Vogel: A schematic flow diagram is shown in Fig. 1. In general, a power-driven, high-pressure mud pump capable of delivering up to 60 gallmin was used to circulate drilling fluid parallel to the faces of 1-in. diameter sandstone cores mounted in a 2 3/4-in. ID high-pressure test cell. Pump rates were controlled by means of a magnetic clutch to maintain an average axial fluid velocity of 110 ft/min in the annular space between the cell wall and a 1 1/2-in. rod positioned on the center line of the cell. The core specimens were Berea sandstone plugs sealed with plastic inside 1 1/8-in. OD tubes and were fluid-saturated prior to use. Burettes were used to accumulate fluid discharged from the cores. The mud sump shown was used for treatment and storage of the drilling-fluid samples during a particular test. Since 1933, the Coal Mine Rating Schedule in Pennsylvania has provided credits in the Workmen's Compensation insurance premium rates for the use of safety hats, goggles and shoes. In that year, the worth of such protective clothing had just been well established and satisfactory articles were being made by a number of manufacturers. Standards for these three items of safety clothing' were written in the Rating Schedule and have been little changed through the years. The credit in the premium rate for a bituminous mine is $0.14 for hats, $o.08 for goggles, $o.08 for shoes. In order to earn such credit, it is necessary that all the employees in the particular mine be equipped with safety hats, goggles or shoes, as the case may be. In fact, it is not unusual for mines to qualify in all three categories, thus earning a rate reduction of $o.30 per $100 of payroll. These credits have been a decided stimulus to the use of safety clothing, and at present insured bituminous mines are credited as follows: Hats........ 63 per cent, or 22,600 employees Goggles..... 28 per cent, or 10,000 employees Shoes....... 44 per cent, or 15,800 employees Of course, many other employees wear these protective articles but they are in mines that are not fully equipped and so are not given the rate credit. The growth in use of this equipment has not been spectacular but it has been steady, as shown in Table I. An interesting thing about this is that it covers virtually all of the small and medium-sized bitumi- nous mine operations in Pennsylvania. A number of large operations are included, but many large mines are self-insured. It is difficult to keep alive interest in safety work in the smaller mines: first, because employment of safety engineers is out of the question and the one or several mine officials employed are often concerned only with production; second, because the life of many small mines is brief, so that safe conditions although established do not last long. Conditions as to safety in mines of this class rest chiefly with inspectors of state mine departments and of casualty insurance companies. Many millions of tons of production come from these mines, so that

Equilibrium and kinetic segregation coefficients for the dilute high-temperature system tantalum in iron have been experimentally determined in a levitating zone melter. The equilibrium segregation coefficient, ko, is 0.43 * 0.03. Planar interface solidification is possible up to a freezing velocity of 4 in. per hr but not at 6 in. per hr. Precise concentration control of the solid is possible over this range of freezing velocities. The momentum boundary layer thickness, and the diffusion boundary layer thickness, 6, are such that either 6, > 6 or ALTHOUGH considerable data exists in the literature concerning the stability of planar-solidification fronts, little data exists for high-temperature metallic systems. The study of fundamental aspects of solidification in high-temperature iron-base systems is complicated by the extensive solvent power of liquid iron. In order to minimize such effects a levitating zone melter was used to study the segregation of tantalum in iron.' The solute tantalum was selected because: 1) the ko value was, according to the literature, initially thought to be less than 0.1, thus increasing the precision of the method used;2,3 2) the vapor pressure and is a constant, fixed by induction stirring, 6, the diffusion boundary layer, is 5150 u. At 400 rpm and 6 in. per hr freezing velocity the cast structure exhibits circular macroporosity and banding concentric with the axis of the rotation of the interface. Electron-beam microprobe analyses indicate that the tantalum content is highest at the center of rotation (1.2/1) and decreases with increasing radius as the fine-grained bands become sharper. This entire structure exhibits microseg-regation of tantalum. of tantalum in 1 atm of H2 is small, assuring conservation of solute during redistribution; and 3) spec-troscopic analyses were available for the appropriate range of tantalum considered. Additional objectives were 1) to determine kinetic segregation coefficients for well-stirred zones with constant boundary conditions and thus quantitatively calibrate solute-segregation behavior in the levitating zone melter, and 2) to examine the range of freezing velocities over which smooth solid-liquid interfaces could be controlled in an iron-base alloy under the restrictions of the thermal gradients imposed while levitating a zone. The single-pass zone-melting method was used to calculate individual k values.'

This paper aims to present the results of an investigation concerning gravitative differentiation in lava flows, based on a quantitative microscopic and chemical study of a Triassic basalt from Nova Scotia, and confirmed by data secured from a study of certain Keweenawan ophites. At Cape d'Or, Nova Scotia, near the head of the Bay of Bundy, marine erosion has exposed a series of Triassic basalt flows in which copper has been sought for a number of years. Studies of the thickest flow of the series with regard to volumetric composition, specific gravity, and grain have been made by the junior author, and measurements by students at Tufts College, together with confirmatory observations of the same nature on this and other flows by the senior writer, and chemical analyses made by the Division of Chemistry, Mines Branch, Ottawa,' all show differentiation in lava flows comparable to that in intrusive bodies. The work was made possible by the availability of the drill-cores, the property of Tufts College, and emphasizes the desirability of the study of drill-cores from other localities. Measurements of the specific gravities of certain Keweenawan lava flows of Michigan by the senior author, from material collected in 1915, will be given as a comparison to those of the Cape d'Or flow. It has been found that the specific gravity of drill-cores, or volume per cubic foot, can be readily obtained by measuring their dimensions. This can be done to an accuracy of within 1 per cent. in pieces of core over 100 mm. in length by using a micrometer gage for the diameter, and taking the average of six measurements of the diameter; and the average of four measurements of the length made with a finely graduated ruler. Then, after weighing them, the weight in grams per cubic centimeter, or what is practically the same thing, ounces per cubic foot, is obtained. System-

A new instrument for measuring bulk and grain vol-urnes is described, and compared in accuracy with two modifications of Nutting's method, All three methods are reasonably fast, and in all three the probable error in the determinations of bulk volume can be kept down to about 0.1 to 0.2 per cent. INTRODUCTION The new pycnometer described in this paper is designed to give speed without sacrificing accuracy. Some time ago Russell1 described a somewhat similar appa-ratus; however, the instrument described in the present paper is more accurate. Nutting' designed the pycnom-eter shown in Fig. 1 (A and B), and Pirson3 has shown points like those of Fig. 1-D. The procedure described in this paper for using Nutting's pycnometer has been modified from that used by Nutting. CHOICE OF LIQUIDS The best liquids for measuring grain volumes are hydrocarbons or chlorinated hydrocarbons which evaporate slowly. Trimethylbenzene or mesitylene, triethylben-zene, carbon tetrachloride, and tertalin have been used for this purpose. Any of these liquids or mercury may be used for measuring bulk volume. PREVENTING ERRORS DUE TO INVASION OF LIQUID Errors due to the invasion of the porous, permeable bulk samples by the liquid of measurement may be prevented or greatly reduced by using mercury, by applying an impervious coating, or by soaking the bulk samples in the liquid of measurement until bubbles cease issuing from them. Errors are produced only by the invasion of the samples which occurs between movement when the samples are weighed in air and the moment the weight of liquid displaced by the sample in the pycnometer is determined. No error is produced by varying degrees of filling of the pore space of the samples by the liquid of measurement. The excess liquid should be wiped from the samples immediately before the weight in air W1, is determined, and they should be placed in the pycnometers immediately. OPERATION OF NEW INSTRUMENT The new pycnometer is shown in Fig. 2. It consists of two glass parts which fit together at a ground glass joint. The spaces J and D are connected by fine glass tubes E, and the space J must be larger than the space D by at least the volume of the largest sample to be tested. A stability theory is developed for miscible liquid-liquid displacement within a porous medium. In the usual case considered, a high-density high-viscosity "oil" is displaced downdip by a low-density low-viscosity "solvent'! Perturbation methods are used to find the conditions under which the spreading mechanism changes from the stable dispersion process to unstable viscous fingering. We find that instability is conditional, that there is a dependence on the shape of a disturbance leading to a"diameter" effect and that very difficult experimental scaling problems may result. A useful consequence is the definition of a minimum "slug size" for stable miscible displacement. This should make possible optimum use of the solvent process for oil recovery. The results may apply to many situations in which one fluid displaces another of somewhat different fluid properties within a porous medium. INTRODUCTION The process of miscible liquid-liquid displacement looked very favorable when it first received serious consideration as a means to increase petroleum recovery. Some early laboratory results were interpreted to mean that only a small "slug" of solvent was needed, perhaps 2 to 3 per cent of a hydrocarbon pore volume. This "slug" could recover the oil in an entire reservoir provided the fluids remained miscible.1,2 Only a slow growth of the "mixing zone", or gradual transition from oil to solvent, should occur. This would follow naturally from mixing by a dispersion mechanism such as that described by Scheidegger.3 And, indeed, laboratory cores have shown this kind of behavior provided solvent viscosity was at least as great as that of the oi1.2,4-6 The same kind of behavior has also been observed with solvent viscosity lower than that of the oil after the distance traversed became large. Not all laboratory results have been this favorable, however.7-9 Mixing zone growth may become proportional to the distance traveled rather than the square root of this quantity. Such behavior accompanies high rates in short systems of large diameter, provided the viscosity ratio is adverse. If this more rapid spreading were to persist in a reservoir, the solvent requirement for miscible "slug" displacement could exceed 30 per cent of a pore volume. There is considerable economic importance in the difference between 3 and 30 per cent solvent. A 1ogical conclusion is that two different kinds of flow behavior are possible, with each kind leading to a different result. One kind gives efficient displacement, the other does not. In the efficient case, the solvent bank spreads out only by the mechanism we have termed dispersion. Under these conditions, displacement is as near piston-like as possible. In the second kind of flow, found only with adverse viscosity ratios, viscous fingering occurs. That is, permeability variations cause a small finger of low-viscosity solvent-rich fluid to move ahead of its average position within the mixing zone. This creates a path of low resistance to flow, and an even greater amount of solvent-rich fluid follows. Thus, the process is autocatalytic. Once started, the fingering mechanism rapidly becomes dominant. The question to be answered is this. Under what conditions will each of these two different kinds of flow occur? In particular, what conditions denote the transition from dispersion to viscous fingering as the solvent spreading mechanism? The answer may tell us whether or not the desirable, near piston-like miscible displacement process is practical. An answer to this problem can be obtained from theory by the use of perturbation methods. The procedure is as follows. We first formulate a mathematical representation of the system. Then a small disturbance (or perturbation) in solvent concentration profile is introduced and observed to see what happens. Unstable flow is indicated when a small disturbance will grow larger. This will lead to eventual viscous fingering. If on the other hand the disturbance dies out, the displacement is stable. In this latter case, with dispersion as the spreading mechanism, near piston-like displacement is possible. Electrical prospecting is the art of exploring the structure of the subsoil in regard to conductivity variations and interpreting the results of such exploration as to their geological meaning. Electrical prospecting has been applied during the last few years with outstanding success, not only to prospecting1 for ore but also to structural studies.2 Both applications have proved helpful to the geologist, and the latter application especially promises to become of still greater importance in the future. The mapping of structures is the most important function of the oil geologist. Oil is lighter than water, therefore in water-bearing beds it will migrate upward until the migration is stopped by a bed impermeable to the oil. Geologic structures such as domes, anticlines, faults and terraces, offer good prospects in the search for oil accumulations and can be traced easily by electrical prospecting, provided they are composed of a series of sedimentary layers of which at least one possesses fair electrical conductivity and follows the general trend of the structure. Conditions for Successful Mapping The first condition, fair electrical conductivity, is met in almost any oil-bearing series, because generally the electrical resistance of a sedimentary bed is identical with the resistance of the more or less saline waters, filling partly or entirely the pores of the rocks.3 Briefly, the electrical resistivity of a bed can be expressed for all practical purposes by the product R X P, where R is the specific resistance of the waters in the rock pores and P a factor depending upon the percentage of water by volume in the rock. The year 1937 brought to south Arkansas increased drilling activity and production. Oil production amounted to 12,159,440 bbl., an increase of 1,504,500 bbl., or 14.1 per cent over 1936. This was the largest production since 1931, and the first annual increase since 1925, when the deeper sands at Smackover were developed. There were 177 wells completed during the year, with 103 oil wells, 6 gas wells, and 68 dry holes, an increase of more than 100 per cent over 1936. Of the 56 wildcat wells drilled, 52 were dry and 4 produced oil. Two new fields, one important extension and three minor extensions were discovered. The trend toward deeper drilling is shown by the fact that 97 wells were more than 5000 ft. deep, including 80 over 6000 ft. and 13 over 7000 ft., although the depth record of 7973 ft., made in 1935, was not exceeded. Geological Section Deeper and more extensive drilling during the past few years, not only in south Arkansas but also in adjacent parts of north Louisiana and east Texas, has furnished much important geological information and has brought out some very unexpected facts in regard to structural and depositional conditions in the series of formations laid down in the interval between the end of the Pennsylvanian and early Cretaceous time. It is now evident that an important basin of salt deposition existed in the Arkansas-Louisiana-Texas area, but it is still an open question whether this salt basin was contemporaneous and continuous with the even larger Gulf Coast salt basin extending from Mississippi to Mexico. The accompanying columnar section (Fig. 1) shows the producing zones and names that have been applied to the several subsurface formations, most of which have no outcrop equivalents. This is for the convenience of readers unfamiliar with recent developments, but the correlations and nomenclature cannot yet be considered final. These formations will be discussed in more detail in various papers to be published in the near future.

LEACHING of mined-out areas at the Arizona property of the Ray Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., was started on Jan. 20, 1.937, and by July 1, 1938, 10,000,000 lb. of copper had been produced by this method. Leaching operations at present are confined to the western portion of the ore body and over an area of approximately ten acres. The ore in this area was extremely high in pyrite and the copper content, which averaged slightly in excess of 1 per cent, was the result of incomplete secondary enrichment by solutions which apparently worked laterally from the main ore body. Above the ore was an unaltered zone of primary or protore averaging 125 ft. in thickness and containing approximately 0.6 per cent copper. Above this was the capping or leached zone averaging 50 ft. thick.

(communication to the Secretary*) :—The characteristics of Professor Home's metallurgical papers are, that he is able, from the mass of confusing evidence on the subject, to make an analysis and present hypothetical and essential principles in concrete form for consideration and discussion. I can appreciate, from the practical side of the subject, the labor of collecting and investigating the data which was essential to prepare the paper. Much of it necessarily came from material of preceding years of manufacture in which time was allowed for chemical reactions of the re-carburizer, and for the elimination of the oxidation-products before teeming the ingots. This practice gave a favorable time-element to free the metal from slag and other impurities— a requisite condition for the production of sound steel in the ingots. But, in allowing them to become cold before they were charged into the furnace, a subsequent time-element entered as a detrimental factor in the development of the pipe or shrinkage-cavities, which gave an ingot-structure deficient in soundness, at least in the upper portion. (The term slag is used in a general rather than in a strictly technical sense.) Traces of manganese sulphide are often associated with manganese silicates in the same thread or seam, and at other places they are separate and distinct. Interpretations from material thus manufactured must be made with due allowances for the methods of fabrication and the requirements of service. The only way we now have to estimate what the degree of soundness of the ingot-structure was, in the early foreign and American manufacture of steel rails, is by examination of the worn and failed material after years of service. We must remember also that the poorest material was long since consigned to the scrap-heap without any full record of its history. The rails from a given ingot cannot now be identified ; and in many

ENGINEERS in the past have been largely associated with private enterprise and there has been a considerable tendency on the part of some members of our profession to depreciate government service for engineers. We engineers must change our mental attitude about employment in government service, particularly in view of the present most friendly attitude of the U. S. Civil Service Commission toward engineers for major posts in our Government. We must also take a much more active interest in public affairs. It must be realized that the national-defense program, which we are now organizing, will require for its effectiveness large numbers of engineers skilled in a wide range of technical and administrative services. In fact, the success of this undertaking will depend largely upon the extent to which our Government can command expert engineering talent to serve during the emergency. ALTHOUGH the open-hearth charge contributes CO, C02, H2, A and water vapor to the combustion gases and absorbs oxygen from them, in the main the thermal effects in the melting charge and molten bath can be considered independently of those in fuel combustion; the latter then is regarded simply as the source of the net heat required to finish a heat of steel. First of all, it should be remembered that a large percentage of the heat supplied to the bath is furnished by oxidation of the various elements in the charge itself. If this charge consisted of 80 to 100 per cent of hot metal and the oxidation were accomplished by blowing in air or oxygen, as in the bessemer converter, the net heat absorption would be negative; that is, the bath would contribute part of the heat required to keep the melting chamber hot, in addition to that contained in the finished steel and slag. In actual open-hearth practices, probably the nearest approach to this is in the duplex furnace, charged with bessemer-blown metal and some hot metal, where very little heat is required to complete the refining and nearly all the heat energy from fuel combustion is used to keep the roof and walls of the melting chamber up to around 2900 to 3000 F (1600 to 1650 C), so that the bath will not cool off during the refining. The other extreme is with all-cold charges containing around 80 per cent steel scrap and 20 per cent cast iron or cold pig iron, in which case a very large proportion of the heat in the bath at tap is supplied from the fuel combustion. THERMAL EFFECTS IN MELTING In a typical heat, the fuel furnishes about four million British thermal units per ton of steel produced. The heat required, for the metallurgical processes is not easily defined in useful manner but it ranges downward from about one million Btu, depending not only on the charge but on the manner of calculation. The vapor phase deposition of molybdenum and tungsten from the hexacar-bonyls has been thoroughly investigated by Lander and Germerl, and shown to yield well-bonded coatings on a variety of hot metallic surfaces. They also demonstrated that chromium coatings2'3 could be similarly deposited, but did not investigate this metal extensively. Recently, conditions have been described by which this compound can be prepared in quantities sufficient for laboratory scale plating experiments, and it is the purpose of the present communication to outline the results of preliminary experiments upon the plating of chromium from its carbonyl. Apparatus and Technique The apparatus used in these experiments is shown in Fig I. At one end, connected by a short length of rubber tubing, is a Cenco Hypervac 20 pumping continuously. At the opposite end is a needle valve which allows a small stream of purified hydrogen to flow through the apparatus. Connected in series are a trap T1, maintained at the temperature of dry ice and acetone, the plating chamber, and two traps T² and T3 containing crystals of the carbonyl. T² is kept in a constant temperature bath (not shown), while T³ is at room temperature. Stopcock S6 allows the hydrogen flow to by-pass the carbonyl traps. A McLeod gauge is connected so that it can measure the pressure at the pump through Se, or the pressure at the plating chamber through S9 and S6. The standard (12 liter) volume connected by Sb is used to determine the volume included by S4, S6, SB, Slot the needle valve and the McLeod gauge. Knowledge of this volume allows calibration of the flow of hydrogen. The apparatus* is built entirely of pyrex, except for the needle valve, the rubber connection to the Hypervac, and the cover of the plating chamber. The plating chamber is water-jacketed, with a large brass top allowing insertion of the specimen to be plated. Set into the brass top is a ground glass stopper through which thermocouple leads are sealed. The thermocouple wires (pure Pt, and 87 pct Pt-13 pct Rh) serve the double purpose of measuring the specimen temperature and suspending it in the chamber. Surrounding the chamber is the coil of an induction heater, H. The apparatus is designed to allow variation of the following conditions: (I) the specimen temperature, from room temperature to about 1000°C, (2) the carbonyl vapor pressure, from 40 to 220 microns, and (3) the hydrogen flow. DURING 1950 the jet-piercing process was used commercially in the piercing of primary blast-holes in magnetic taconite at the preliminary taconite plant of .the Erie Mining Co., Aurora, Minn. The Erie Mining Co. purchased a jet-piercing machine and associated equipment in 1949, and the machine has been in operation since its installation in the summer of that year. An overall view of the pit with the JPM-1 jet-piercing machine in operation is shown in Fig. 1. During three months of 1949 and continuously since February 1950, production piercing took place under all pit conditions. By the end of October 1950, a total of 15,000 linear ft of hole had been pierced in an open pit handling an average of 1200 to 1800 tons of crude a day in one 8-hr shift. While it is recognized that this output does not approach the millions of tons a year planned for the developing Minnesota taconite projects, the machine as a unit has been operating under conditions probably more adverse than those that eventually will be encountered in the large operations. This pilot operation has permitted evaluation of the piercing problem in the full-scale taconite plant. This paper describes jet-piercing process funda- mentals, important features of the latest jet-piercing burners and machine, actual piercing results obtained, and new developments that give promise of materially increasing overall process efficiency. To produce the blasthole, jet-piercing utilizes thermal energy, as contrasted with the application of mechanical energy in churn drills and jackham-mers. The heart of the process may be termed a tailored flame produced by a rocket-type burner, thermodynamically similar in every respect to that of the giant rockets being developed for military purposes. The heat release in the combustion chamber of the burner is about 50x10' Btu per cu ft per hr as compared with 5x10' for most modern steam generators.* Combustion of liquid petroleum fuels (kerosine, diesel oil, or No. 2 fuel oil) with gaseous oxygen in the burner chamber at pressures of 100 to 200 psi results in temperatures of about 4300°F. Expansion of the hot combustion gases through divergent nozzles produces high-temperature supersonic jets having measured velocities of about 6000 fps. Impinging the flame jets on rock causes a thin surface layer to expand and break away from the base as a result of the thermally induced stresses. This spalling action is aided further in chert and quartzite by the 0.82 pct volume change resulting from the 6 to p quartz inversion at 1066"F.t The dynamic action of the jets whisks the spalled rock

In May and June, 1885, I was engaged in examining the goldores of Las Minas, in the State of Vera Cruz, Mexico, with a view of finding a cheap and efficient method for extracting the gold. The following minerals could be plainly seen in the ore : magnetite, pyrites of iron, pyrites of' copper, quartz, and garnet. Neither galena nor zinc-hlende mere visible, but the ore contained a trace of lead, and in some samples of ore from the Muertos mine, 1.19 per cent. of zinc mas found. Antimony and arsenic were not present. Native gold could scarcely be seen in specimens of' the ore, and it only appeared—mainly in extremely fine particles—after pulverizing and washing. Magnetite was in every instance the most prominent mineral, its quantity varying between 43 and 67 per cent. Determinations of copper and sulphur showed that from 3.5 to 7 per cent. pyrites of copper, and from 3 to 22 per cent. pyrites of iron were present. The gold-value of the ore varied between 0.3 oz. and 0.8 oz. per ton. I do not speak of specimens, but of average samples of large quantities of ore put through the battery. In ore that had been crushed through a No. 40 screen, the gold appeared, in part, as free gold, the rest being thoroughly mixed with the magnetite and pyrites, both minerals containing about the same percentage of gold. If this free gold was brought in contact with pure quicksilver it (lid not amalgamate readily, even if the quicksilver was charged with sodium amalgam.
