To most mine operators, it seems evident that there is a drill-steel problem, although under certain conditions the amount of drill-steel breakage does not appear serious. What is at fault? It may be one or a combination of circumstances. The development of rock drills to the hammer-drill type in place of the old reciprocating piston drill, probably is one important cause for the greater steel breakage. Perhaps the manufacturers of drill steel have failed to realize what alloys are needed for this new service or have overlooked the changes in the art of rock drilling. Although suitable alloys are provided, they may not be SO handled in the manufacturing process as to be in the best condition to withstand the demands of rock drilling. The mine operator may be at fault in desiring to use the smallest possible drill-steel section in order that the gage of the drill bits may be correspondingly small and the amount of footage drilled per unit of labor may be greater; or the black-smithshop practice at the mines may need improvement. The miner who uses the drill steel may also require more intensive supervision and education. Again, the manufacturer of rock drills may have failed to study the types of blows the steel alloys will withstand satisfactorily and which their tools are delivering and so he may not know whether or not a different design of rock drill would equal or excel their present drilling speeds without treating the drill steel so severely. All of these hypotheses probably have their supporters. On the other hand, perhaps we are seeking too much service from drill steel and we need a fuller realization of the fatigue strains developed and should prepare to relieve these by a periodic heat treatment of the steels. However, we do not find any proof that any of these suppositions may be held responsible for the drill-steel breakage attendant to mining. The proposed investigation of this matter by the U. S. Bureau of Mines is fully warranted in the promotion of the conservation of labor and material, and the safety of the workmen. A computer program has been developed which will locate the economic limits of an open-pit mine and also designate which ore and waste blocks to remove per period (years or quarters) to maximize the discounted cash flow over the life of the mine. A set of operating constraints was carefully selected so that the following functions are controlled: (1) the removal of overburden by preproduction and production stripping exposes a fixed amount of ore; (2) a constant manpower and equipment usage is insured (except for trucks); (3) the tons of mill ore, concentrate, and stockpiled ore are regulated; (4) the number and extent of shovel moves are minimized; (5) the grindability of the rock is considered as well as the variable haulage cost caused by variable haulage distances and depths; and (6) the size of the shovel working area is regulated. As many as 50 alternate schedules can be produced per computer run. They are arranged in descending order starting with the best solution.

THE Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Co., Asbestos, Que. has operated for a number of years, supplying the parent company, Johns-Manville, raw material for asbestos products. The mine is situated in the 70-mile-long serpentine belt running from Asbestos, Que. on the west to East Broughton on the east. This district is the most important producing area in the world of quality spinning-fiber asbestos, with 11 operating mines supplying 70 pct of the world's needs. The Jeffrey mine, located 90 miles from Montreal and approximately 35 miles southwest of Thetford, accounts for 50 pct of the Canadian asbestos output. Production from the Canadian serpentine belt is the chrysotile asbestos, which is considered the best available for spinning. Consumers in the United States prefer the clean, fine fibers of the Canadian chrysotile of the type produced by the Jeffrey mine. Mining In 1881, when the mine was first opened, all work, including drilling, was done by hand. The deposit, located on a hillside, was first worked as a sidehill cut by hand drilling 15-ft holes and blasting with black powder. The fiber was chiselled from the broken rock. Hand derricks, later powered by horses, were used to raise the rock as the pit deepened. Eventually, the pit became so deep that derricks were, by necessity, replaced by aerial tramways. In the late 1930's, further deepening of the open pit, with the resulting constriction of the pit bottom brought about the need for altering the mining system then in use. The high ratio of overburden to be handled to mill ore mined and the value of surface structures, not company property, that would be destroyed in expanding the area of the pit, definitely indicated vertical rather than horizontal expansion would have to be used. One exception to this was that a small area on company property to north and east of the pit could be opened up. The mining problem then resolved itself into two phases; make the small lateral expansion and as rapidly as possible choose a mining method that would expand the mine vertically. Several methods for vertical expansion were studied and rejected. Methods considered included shrinkage stoping, block caving, glory holing, and various modifications of open workings. Block caving was finally accepted as the most suitable method of underground development. Cost factors and production were important factors in the decision, also, the asbestos mines in the Thetford area were already having success with this method. Original plans provided for the lateral expansion of the open mine where possible and beginning the underground operation. This program was based on the open pit being worked out in 1954, with the underground development and production gradually increasing until the open mine was depleted. In 1949, the plan was changed to allow underground development to progress at maximum so that underground output would be 550 tons per hr by 1951. Any deficit in ore would be mined from the open pit. This change permitted extending the life of the open pit through 1964 and in this time would make available a large quantity of readily attained ore. Block Caving at The Jeffrey Mine Plans for the underground operation were formulated on a 12,000-ton-per-day basis, and the adaptability of block caving methods to high production presented a desirable situation. As shown in the main-haulage plan, a continuous loop was laid out for smooth operation of the underground railroad from the loading points to the underground crusher. A feature encountered at the Jeffrey mine, as well as other asbestos mines using caving methods, is the large size of caved material, requiring that ore be crushed before hoisting.

IN the study of the rolling recrystallization of face-centered-cubic metals, a most unusual observation is the frequent occurrence of a sharp re-crystallization texture of cube orientation. Although the general conditions under which this texture occurs are known,2,3 its origin is still not well understood. Based on the observed relationship between the {110}<112> deformation texture and the (113}<211> recrystallization texture, regardless of the effect of alloying elements2,4,5 or the symmetry of the deformation texture,&apos; there is a strong indication that a specific component of the deformation texture is related to a specific component of the recrystallization texture. Using the rotational reorien-tation relationship as a means of correlating the deformation and recrystallization textures, it was proposed that the deformation component which related the cube texture has {358)<523> indices."&apos; The investigation reported here was undertaken to seek experimental evidence for the validity of this proposition. Experimental Procedure Two copper single crystals having an initial orientation within 2" of (358) [523] indices were prepared in the manner described in Ref. 5. The purity of the copper was between 99.94 and 99.97 pct. The original dimensions of the crystals were as follows: specimen A, 0.465 in. thickness, 0.844 in. width, and 0.955 in. length; specimen B, 0.535 in. thickness, 1.120 in. width, and 1.36 in. length: Rolling was done on a laboratory rolling mill according to the following schedule: 0.010 in. per pass to 50 pct reduction in thickness, 0.005 in. per pass to 70 pct reduction inthickness, 0.002 in. per pass to 85 pct reduction in

Although the 71 Minerals operation is now closed down and the operating data presented is almost five years old, it is well worth describing since it was the first heap leaching operation conducted on a primarily silver ore. Tombstone was discovered in 1877 by Ed Schieffelen; and it became one of the most famous mining towns in the West through the stories connected with Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and the Clanton brothers. Like many silver deposits .in the western United States, the Tombstone ores were relatively shallow. Several million ounces of silver were recovered in the relatively few years the camp was active; but mining virtually ceased by the early 1900s and was only continued in a small way until the 19409, a history similar to that of Tuscarora. The 71 Minerals operation was started in May 1975 and continued until late 1978 within the city limits of Tombstone on waste dumps; one was the&apos; Lucky Cuss, Schieffelen&apos;s discovery, which had accumulated from the old underground operations. This waste material was mostly less than 50 mm (2 in.) in size, although there was some larger lumps. The grade was about 34 g Ag and 0.5 g Au per mt (1.0 oz Ag and 0.015 oz Au per st). The Tombstone dumps contained approximately 1,000,000 tons. The dumps and patented claims were held by a single owner, Tombstone Development Company, thus sufficient leaching material could be acquired from one source rather than dealing with a number of individuals, as is usual in putting together leaching ventures in old mining camps. 71 Minerals Ltd. was formed and a lease of the properties obtained. A site was selected close to the major mine dumps not far from down- town Tombstone. Pads approximately 90 m (300 ft) wide and 180 m (600 ft) long with an 8-degree slope were prepared using compacted old mill tailings as a base sealant on the pads. Mining was done at a rate of about 2,000 tons per day with a dozer, two scrapers, a front-end loader, and 30 ton trucks. The ore was dumped by the scrapers as it came from the dumps with no screening or crushing in 460 mm (18 in. ) layers and trimmed with the loader. Based on bulk sampling and laboratory testing, the majority of thegold and silver values were recovered within 30 days of leaching.

INTRODUCTION. THE installation of the Gayley Dry-Air process appealed specially to the management of the Warwick Iron & Steel Co., for the. reason that for fifteen years records had been kept at the works of the company, showing the amount of water entering the furnace in the form of aqueous vapor, and careful observations had been made of its effect upon the working of the furnace. Some years had proved much worse in their effect than others, on account, not only of excessive moisture, but also of great variation in the moisture from day to day, and sometimes within a few hours. It had been found impossible to. make a satisfactory percentage of high-silicon foundry-iron in summer, even on high fuel; and for some years the endeavor had been made so to arrange the sales that, during July and August, only a small percentage of the iron produced would be required to carry more than 2 per cent. of silicon. Our larger furnace, running on basic iron, year after year, produced in February a tonnage 20 per cent. higher than in August, on a much lower fuel-consumption, while, at the same time, the summer months were marked by ? messes," tuyeres closed by slips, and other irregularities, constituting serious additional business losses. It will be easily understood, therefore, that the records made at the Isabella furnace after the installation of the dry blast in 1904 possessed special interest, and were closely watched by us. On the basis of our own experience, we argued that if the moisture could be kept low, and also uniform, the cost of installation would be more than justified. Once it was believed that anthracite or coke were the only fuels generally available and suitable for the generation of water gas, particularly so when this gas was made in the generators of standard carburetted water-gas sets such as are commonly used in the manufacture of city gas. During the past 8 years, practice has changed considerably and it is now common to find gas plants operating without anthracite or coke and using bituminous coal in the generator. This change in fuel has appreciably increased the marketability and sales of certain coal producers&apos; products; accordingly it is of interest to coal operators and others to know the reason for this change, the present trend in practice and the adaptability of various coals for generation of water gas. This paper briefly discusses these conditions and some of the factors relating thereto. Bituminous Coal not Ideal but Cheaper than Coke In spite of many changes which have been made in both process and generating apparatus for using bituminous coal as generator fuel more efficiently, in general it is not an ideal fuel for this purpose. It is supplanting coke because it costs less; it is so much cheaper per ton delivered at the gas works that water gas made therefrom costs less per unit-volume than that made from coke, even though the quantity of generator fuel consumed per therm (100,000 B. t. u.) of gas made is greater with coal. This is the reason why so many city gas plants, as well as others, are using bituminous coal instead of coke. Conditions Favoring Change from Coke to Coal The conditions which have made it possible and feasible, as well as economical, to supplant coke with coal may be summarized as follows: (1) Changes in methods of operating and alteration in generating apparatus; (2) lowering of the calorific standards for city gas, and (3) availability

SHARPNESS of separation and washing efficiency are often confused. The sharpness index indicates the precision of a washing unit; the washing efficiency takes into account not only the unit&apos;s precision but also the washability characteristics of raw coal and the near-gravity materials at the effective density of cut. A sound basis for evaluating the sharpness index is essential in comparing the sharpness of separation attained by different cleaning units. Sharpness Index and Related Criteria: Washing plant sharpness of separation has been well represented by Hancock&apos;s efficiency chart and Tromp&apos;s curve of migrated materials. Some useful coefficients derived from Tromp&apos;s curve—the error area, probable error, and imperfection value—have been widely used to measure sharpness of separation. These are defined in a number of papers presented at the first and second International Coal Preparation Colsference held in Paris (1950) and Essen (1954).1-5 In evaluating the performance of a dense medium separator at four different gravities, Yan-cey and Greer6 bserved that even with similar operating conditions and the same size grading of feed, the imperfection value of a washing plant varies through a greater range than the probable error. The present writer also observed the same type of anomalies in comparing the imperfection values of one plant which were determined under almost identical conditions. He therefore devised a graphical method to evaluate a washing unit&apos;s sharpness of separation and define it by a single coefficient, which is substantially independent of coal characteristics under normal operation of the unit. Unlike imperfection value, the new coefficient can be expressed on a percentage basis. Coal preparation engineers generally agree that the amount of misplaced material resulting from any separation in a washing plant is almost directly related to the amount of +0.10 sp gr (near-gravity) materials. In actual practice, however, misplacement is not restricted to the 20.10 sp gr range. It will be evident from a study of Tromp curves that this misplacement often extends over unequal specific gravity ranges on the two sides of the actual density of separation. The same condition exists for near-gravity ash distribution and the resultant misplacement of ash units during any separation. But so far as the same unit is concerned, the total misplacements bear a definite ratio to the amount of near-gravity zone materials that is affected by misplacements. This ratio should be constant not only for various densities of separation but also for different qualities of feed coal treated in the same plant. This ratio, multiplied by 100, directly represents the inefficiency of the plant. When the plant inefficiency value is subtracted from 100, the re- &apos; sult is designated as sharpness index. Evaluating the Sharpness Index: The method of evaluating the sharpness index is explained here with reference to Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a reproduction of the familiar diagram used by Cerchar of France to represent the inefficiency of a separation in terms of "triangle of errors," which is a measure of organic loss. A metallographic study of solute segregation produced during controlled solidification of Sn-Pb alloys has previously been reported.&apos; It was found that the growth conditions which produced well-developed cellular substructures led to severe segregation, and even at solute concentrations of 0.2 wt pct Pb regions of a lead-rich phase were formed at the junctions of cell boundaries (nodes). Similar sample preparation and etching techniques have now been applied to several tin alloys at more dilute concentrations. The crystals were solidified uni-directionally under less-severe growth conditions so that the predominant interface structure was composed of two-dimensional cells.* Binary alloys with lead, using 9.999 pct Sn as a solvent, and ternary alloys with lead and bismuth or lead and antimony, using zone-refined tin as a solvent, were examined. The liquid was decanted from the growing crystals in all cases to reveal the interface structure and ensure that two-dimensional cells were being formed. However, since interference may arise from a liquid layer that clings to the interface during decanting,3 an examination of the segregation pattern was always made behind the interface. In all cases, the structure within the bulk of a crystal at greater than 1 cm behind the decanted interface was substantially the same as that nearer the interface. Representative photomicrographs of the dilute Sn-Pb alloy are shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Most observations are similar to those of the previous investigation. For example, the solute concentration at the cell walls is higher than in the intercellular regions; where cell boundaries meet, the segregation is enhanced; the macromosaic or stria-tion substructure and grain boundaries show enhanced segregation; there is also a depletion of solute at cell walls near a striation boundary, as Spittle et a1.4 have observed at decanted interfaces. The first pump of this character, made by H. R. Worthington, and, so far as the writer is informed, the first and only one of this kind ever constructed, is now in daily use in the above-named works. The water-pressure necessary for the working of the hydraulic machinery of this plant had been supplied, up to the time of the building of this pump, by two Worthington Duplex High Pressure Pumps, having steam-cylinders of 20 inches diameter and 12-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 71/2 inches diameter; eight inlet and eight outlet valves of 24 inches diameter, and pumping into a 6-inch pipe. These pumps required a large amount of steam, and, in consequence of the various additions to their duty, their capacity became far short of the work required. In preference to putting in another engine of the same class, it was decided to accept Mr. Worthington&apos;s proposition to build the compound one under description, he guaranteeing that it should be equal to the demands of the works, and at the same time cause a saving of from 5 to 6 tons of coal per day from the amount required to run the two old pumps. The new engine has been in operation about one month, and so far has exceeded the most sanguine expectations. It consists of two high-pressure cylinders of 21 inches and two low-pressure ones of 363/8 inches diameter, by 36-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 961/2 inches diameter. There are two air-pumps of 20 inches diameter by 18-inch stroke; the condenser being 24 inches diameter by 60 inches high. Both cylinders are jacketed with wood and felt, and the low-pressure cylinder also with live steam. The high and low pressure steamcylinders are in line and immediately adjoining each other, while the inconveniences attending an internal stuffing-box are avoided by having two piston-rods for each of the low-pressure cylinders, running through stuffing-boxes on the outside of the smaller high-pressure ones. On the 19th December, 1833, a patent was granted to F. W. Geisenheimer, for smelting iron ore with anthracite. In his claim he says: " Sixthly, though I cannot, and do not, claim an exclusive right of the use of heated air, for any kind of fuel, nevertheless I believe to have a right to claim the use of heated air, applied upon, and in connection with, the said principle and manner discovered by me, to smelt iron ore in blast-furnaces with anthracite coal, by applying a blast of air in such quantity, velocity, and density, or under such pressure, as the compactness, or density, and the continuity of the anthracite requires, as above amply and fully described and illustrated." Dr. Geisenheimer made experiments in smelting iron ore with anthracite at the Valley Furnace, near Pottsville, but he failed to carry out to good practical results the principles enunciated in his patent. In the .Joozcrnal of the Franklin Institute for February, 1838, a communication was published that was made by Mr. George Crane, of the Yniscedwyn Iron Works, South Wales, to the British Association, in September, 1837. On the smelting of iron with anthracite coal, Mr. Crane states therein, that he began the use of anthracite with hot-blast on the 7th February, 1837, in a cupola blastfurnace, 41 feet high, and 10 feet across the boshes ; product, 34 to 36 tons a week. Mr. Crane goes on to say, "It may not be uninteresting to be informed in what matter the idea first occurred to me of applying a heated blast to anthracite coal. One evening, after I had placed a piece of it upon my parlor fire (which had before been made up with bituminous coal), arid had allowed it to arrive at a red heat, upon applying as fierce a blast to this piece of coal as I could raise from a pair of bellows, I noticed a black spot or mark

DESPITE the basic importance of slip in the plastic deformation of metals, and the considerable experimental investigation, thought, and speculation that have been devoted to the fundamental nature of these processes, surprisingly few data have been reported regarding the microscopic appear- [ ] ance and distribution of slip lines,[$] the external manifestation of the slip process. Photographs hitherto reproduced in the literature are in general at low or unspecified magnifications with no correlation to the prior shear. A single-crystal cylindrical tensile specimen of alpha brass about ½ in. in diameter, one of many previously prepared by H. L. Burghoff,1 was available for study. A plane about 3/16 in. wide, parallel to the specimen axis and normal to the plane containing the slip direction and the specimen axis, was ground and metallographically polished along the entire 5-in. gauge length. Heavy etching produced a surface free of both scratches and flow. The specimen was strained in tension until slip markings first became visible on the polished surface (Figs. I and 2). Restressing the crystal caused additional markings to appear at an initially lower [ ] stress than previously was required. Stretching the specimen to produce a dense concentration of slip lines caused such variations in level in the polished surface (normal to the slip direction) that microscopic study at higher magnifications became impossible. After annealing 15 hr. at 850°C., the specimen recrystallized to form two grains with a boundary approximately normal to the specimen axis and about midway along its length. Each was X-rayed, and two planes were again polished along the length of the specimen, in this case each parallel to the slip direction in one of the two crystals. A light longitudinal scratch parallel to the specimen axis was drawn down the center of each plane. A Huggenberger extensometer was attached to the crystal A, whose slip plane would have the higher resolved shear stress of the two, and the specimen was again strained in tension.

Discussion of the paper of Frederick W. Apgar, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 7S, June, 1913, pp. 1011 to 1022. L. C. GRATON, Cambridge, Mass.:-I presume I am one of the few who are exceedingly interested in microscopic work, and I am sure we have all enjoyed this paper very much. I will not attempt to express my own feelings in regard to it beyond saying that it seems to me that this sort of investigation and study has been overlooked and slighted, and its possibilities are very great. There are one or two, details which impressed me, because they were novel to me, and one was the development of secondary galena with dull luster. I have never seen any galena which seemed to be secondary, and have never seen any that was secondary or primary that did not have a bright luster. KIRBY THOMAS, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary *) :-The present-day mining engineer is expected to " see into the ground farther than the point of the pick " and he is justified in making free claim to his ability to do so. Mr. Apgar has recorded the development of the application to the work of the engineer of a very useful but tardily recognized instrument-the petrographic microscope, an instrument which is helping to shatter the proverbial "point of&apos; the pick" limitation-and he has shown its use and its possibilities very clearly. Some further field examples of the use of the microscope in engineering problems may add to the appreciation of Mr. Apgar&apos;s scholarly paper. In exploration by diamond drills in the Sudbury, Ontario, nickel district it is often of great importance to determine when the drill has passed out of the norite and into the foot-wall formation. Structural calculations may give a clue to the expected point of contact, but the variations are considerable, and, since to stop the drill before reaching the contact is futile, and too continue beyond it is needless, it becomes of theoretic and economic importance to determine positively the lithological nature of the corer at critical stages in the work. In some places the foot-wall is an earlier norite, only distinguishable from the nickel norite (Sudbury-: ite), by means of an examination of the rock slides with a petrographic; microscope. Again, certain diabase dikes which cut the norite and. the foot-wall formations cannot be easily or with certainty distin-

A glance into the immediate future of the refining industry, and a retrospective view of 1929, cannot fail to emphasize the need for effective measures of control of refinery still runs. With oil producers alert to the need for control of the crude supply, it has become more than ever necessary for refiners to complete the movement toward stabilization by concerted determination to maintain still run schedules within the limitations prescribed by the demand for gasoline. The outlook for continued growth in the demand for gasoline appears to be well sustained by a preliminary survey of requirements for 1930. In fact, it is apparent that the industry will be assured of a market for gasoline that will aggregate in volume at least 472,000,000 bbl. this year. This indicates a gain in total demand over 1929 of about 9 per cent. or about 4.6 per cent, less than the gain recorded during 1929 over 1928, which amounted to 13.6 per cent. Despite the indicated increase in gasoline demand this year, it is apparent that little, if any, more crude will be required than last year. This is shown in Table 1, presenting estimates of gasoline demand and probable crude requirements for 1930. A correlation is presented for predicting the viscosity of gas-saturated crude oils under reservoir conditions. It is based on the dead oil viscosity and the solution GOR. The correlation was developed from a study which showed that at a fixed solution GOR, the relation between the gas-saturated oil viscosities and the correrponding dead oil viscosities is a straight line on logarithmic coordinates. Data from 457 crude oil samples from the major producing areas of the U. S., Canada and South America were used. The best straight lines through the data were fitted by the method of least squares with a digital computer. The correlation is presented in the form of an equation and also in a convenient gra-phical form. INTRODUCTION The viscosity of gas-saturated crude oils under reservoir conditions is an important physical property used in reservoir engineering calculations. Many difficulties are inherent in the sampling of gas-saturated oils and in the laboratory measurement of their viscosities. Therefore, it is frequently neither possible nor convenient to obtain measured values, so the viscosity must be estimated from other, more readily available data. This paper presents a correlation for predicting the viscosity of gas-saturated crude oils. The correlation is based on the amount of gas in solution and the viscosity of the dead oil at the temperature of interest. A previous correlation of these variables was presented by Beal. In comparison, the correlation presented here extends to a higher GOR and to a lower dead oil viscosity. Over the range of variables covered by both, this correlation is based on approximately 11 times as many oil samples. DEVELOPMENT OF CORRELATION A study was made of the variables or parameters which could be used to relate the viscosity of a gas-saturated oil to its dead oil viscosity. Preference was given to those variables which are easily and commonly measured in the field or in the laboratory. It was found that either the differential liquid formation volume factor or the solution GOR of the gas-saturated oil could be used as a correlating parameter. The solution GOR was se- lected for the correlation because of its simplicity and availability. In an attempt to refine the correlation by introducing a second parameter, the following additional variables were tested: differential liquid formation volume factor at the reservoir bubble point, the formation volume factor at the saturation pressure for the GOR of interest, reservoir temperature, viscosity of C+ fraction at 100°F and atmospheric pressure, weighted average gravity of gas in solution, oil gravity, reservoir bubble point pressure, saturation pressure at the selected GOR and reservoir temperature, and gas mol fraction. None of these improved the correlation to any significant extent. It was found that at any fixed solution GOR, the relation between the gas-saturated oil viscosities and the corresponding dead oil viscosities is a straight line on logarithmic coordinates, for the range of variables investigated. This straight-line relationship was used for the correlation. Viscosity data on a total of 457 crude oil samples were used. The data were obtained with rolling ball-type viscometers. The samples came from all of the important producing areas of the U. S., as well as from Canada and South America. Their geographical distribution is shown in Table 1. FIVE mills are operated in Southeast Missouri by the St. Joseph Lead Co.; these have a total rated capacity of 24,300 tons per day divided as follows: Federal, 12,000 tons; Leadwood, 4800 tons; Desloge, 3600 tons; Bonne Terre, 2400 tons; and Mine La Motte, 1500 tons. These concentrators are similar in a general way, differing mainly in size and type of equipment and in minor variations in flow sheet. No attempt is made rigidly to standardize procedure in the various mills in spite of a general similarity in the ores. Each mill may be regarded as a separate laboratory in which new ideas and changes may be tried. A generalized description of the process is given, noting important differences in procedure at the various plants. The concentration process may be divided into five main stages: dry crushing, wet grinding, desliming and classification, tabling, and flotation.

IN a study of the rate of decomposition of ½ -in. cubes of limestone, dolomitic limestone, and dolomite in a sweeping nitrogen atmosphere, Joseph, Beatty, and Bitsianesl found that the zone of calcination advanced at substantially a constant rate at a given temperature. The purpose of this paper is to show that their data indicate at least two processes occurring when the above carbonates decompose. It is suggested that there are two processes occurring temperature range and the other the limiting process over another temperature range. The data of Joseph and co-workers have been extended by use of the Arrhenius equation, Eq. 1, a relation beween the velocity constant k of a reaction and the absolute temperature T.

Sampling methods for feasibility studies are dependent on geological characteristics of the deposit being evaluated. A preliminary geostatistical study is required, taking into account autocorrelation aspects of variables under study in order that sample plan design can be optimized to produce grade and tonnage estimates within stipulated error limits. In general, regular sample distribution is to be aimed for, and regular sample lengths (from drill core or cuttings, for example) are preferred in order to facilitate statistical analysis. Sample plans are modified and improved (either technically or economically), as a sampling program proceeds and additional information is obtained. Bulk samples for metallurgical testing can be evaluated in terms of the variance shown by all such samples in a deposit and the internal variability of grade. Attention to these sources of variability will ensure proper evaluation of pilot test results from bulk samples. In addition, a general mineralogical study of a deposit is an important, often ignored, requirement in a more general but semi-quantitative evaluation of the representativeness of a bulk sample; and, moreover, provides information useful in optimizing plant design.

THE first pump of this character, made by H. R. Worthington, and, so far as the writer is informed, the first and only one of this kind ever constructed, is now in daily use in the above-named works. The water-pressure necessary for the working of the hydraulic machinery of this plant had been supplied, up to the time of the building of this pump, by two Worthington Duplex High Pressure Pumps, having steam-cylinders of 20 inches diameter and 12-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 72 inches diameter; eight inlet and eight outlet valves of 22 inches diameter, and pumping into a 6-inch pipe. These pumps required a large amount of steam, and, in consequence of the various additions to their duty, their capacity became far short of the work required. In preference to putting in another engine of the same class, it was decided to accept Mr. Worthington&apos;s proposition to build the compound one under description, he guaranteeing that it should be equal to the demands of the works, and at the same time cause a saving of from 5 to 6 tons of coal per day from the amount required to run the two old pumps. The new engine has been in operation about one month, and so far has exceeded the most sanguine expectations. It consists of two high-pressure cylinders of 21 inches and two low-pressure ones of 36g inches diameter, by 36-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 91 inches diameter. There are two air-pumps of 20 inches diameter by 18-inch stroke; the condenser being 24 inches diameter by 60 inches high. Both cylinders are jacketed with wood and felt, and the low-pressure cylinder also with live steam. The high and low pressure steam-cylinders are in line and immediately adjoining each other, while the inconveniences attending an internal stuffing-box are avoided by having two piston-rods for each of the low-pressure cylinders, running through stuffing-boxes on the outside of the smaller high-pressure ones. When Professor Stoek asked for a paper on the above subject, it was too late to prepare by June 1, or near that time, one that would invoive any appreciable amount of experimental work or original research; but the suggestion was made that a review of the literature bearing on the subject might be submitted in good time, and that later this could be supplemented by any experimental data obtained during the summer, if experiments were carried out. In accordance with this suggestion, there are submitted the following notes on references found in the literature of recent years bearing on sulfur in gas. It is to be understood that, in general, these notes express the opinions of the authors whose papers are abstracted, not necessarily the opinions of the abstractors. Very little published information was found bearing directly on producer-gas sulfur, so this has been supplemented, in certain phases of the subject, by references to illuminating gas. Methods of analysis and processes for the elimination of sulfur from the gas are, without much doubt, very closely related in these two products. As in illuminating gas, sulfur is found in producer gas mainly as hydrogen sulfide, mixed with a much smaller and variable quantity of carbon bisu1fide.l The presence of minute quantities of other organic-sulfur compounds has been intimated, but no definite statement is made concerning these. The amount of sulfur present in producer gas is variable and depends on several conditions. The primary factor is the quantity of sulfur in the fuel, but the form in which the sulfur exists, the temperature of the producer, the air-steam ratio, and the efficiency of the scrubbing process are all determining factors. When the coal used contains less than 0.5 per cent. of sulfur, the sulfur in the gas will not exceed the quantity found in the average illuminating gas.2 Sulfur in producer gas may safely run higher than that in coke-oven gas, due to the lower-flame temperature
