THAT gold ores occur in Georgia is a fact apparently not widely known outside of that state, yet in the last hundred years nearly $18,000,000 worth of gold has been mined there. The discovery of gold-hearing quartz was made in 1823 on the "Forty Acre Lot" (which now belongs to the Columbia Mining Co.), in McDuffie County, and about seven years later the first stamp mill on record was erected near there. In recent years Georgia's gold production has dwindled to an insignificant figure. However, with the increase in gold price, interest in this district has been revived, so an electrical geophysical survey was undertaken to aid in discovering new quartz veins, on a part of the Forty Acre Lot, the adjoining Hamilton mine, and the nearby Woodall property.

INTERNAL friction measurements, carried out as functions of temperature, have been used extensively to obtain data on the mobility of interstitial impurities in the Group V metals, vanadium, colum-bium, and tantalum. For a given frequency of vibration, the internal friction peaks at a temperature which depends principally on the particular metal and interstitial impurity. Relaxation times and corresponding activation energies are determined from a knowledge of such peak temperatures for various vibration frequencies. These experimentally determined relaxation times are related to the average jump frequencies of the interstitial impurity atoms using the model of Snoek1 and can be related to macroscopic diffusion coefficients as shown by Polder.2 In these Group V elements, the impurity whose diffusion rate has been the hardest to pin down by the internal friction technique has been carbon. The experimental difficulties associated with carbon in these metals were not evident in the earliest investigation carried out by Ke on tantalum.3 The carbon peak was thought to occur near 140°C at 1 cps on the basis of the enhancement of the height of this peak measured on specimens which had been coated with colloidal carbon and heated in vacuo at 1200°C. Presumably on the basis of similar evidence, Wert identified a peak also near 140°C at 1 cps in columbium with the diffusion of carbon in that element." Later, the difficulties of admitting carbon into these metals without simultaneously introducing oxygen were pointed out by Ang and Wert- nd by Marx, Baker, and Sivertsen.6 The latter suggested that the peaks attributed to carbon in tantalum and columbium might arise from the presence of traces of oxygen, adventitiously absorbed during the carburization. Such suspicion was confirmed, at least in tantalum, when it was found possible to prepare C-Ta specimens without contamination by oxygen. Specimens sci prepared, aitnough high in carbon content, gave no evidence of a damping peak near 140°C.7 Recently, the authors were able to Show that carbon diffuses in tantalum at a rate only slightly slower than that for nitrogen.8 At 1 cps, the carbon peak lies at 34g °C, only a few degrees above the nitrogen peak at 341 °C. However, the two could be distinguished by a different stability with respect to aging at 400 °C and by a different dependence of peak height on solute concentration. On the basis of this experience with tantalum, it appeared worthwhile to search also for a carbon peak in columbium in the vicinity of the nitrogen peak." In this report, the location of the carbon peak in columbium is made known and its position relative to the nitrogen peak is compared with the authors' previous findings in tantalum. In addition, a second source of internal friction seen only in specimens of very high purity is discussed. Columbium was obtained from the Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. as either 30 or 40 mil diam stock. The manufacturer gives the following analysis as typical of this material: 99.4 pct minimum Cb, 0.10 pct maximum C, 0.5 pct Ta, 0.04 pct Ti, 0.02 pct maximum Si, and 0.01 pct maximum Fe. Wires 13 in. long were degassed near 2200°C for 4 to 16 hr in an ultimate vacuum better than 2.10" mm Hg in an apparatus described previously.8 This treatment reduced the oxygen and nitrogen damping peaks observed in the as-received material to less than 0.0001 in Q-1 above background. The latter value varied somewhat from specimen to specimen in the range 0.0004 to 0.0008, depending chiefly on the wire diameter and the frequency of vibration. The high temperature evacuation left the specimen in a rather soft condition, the Vhn being reduced to 40 from a value near 121 in the as-received conGi~iur~. The gram size was about the diameter of the specimen. After outgassing, specimens were loaded with carbon by absorption of such hydracarbons as methane or ethylene. The vacuum tin-fusion method of analysis for hydrogen, developed by Carney, Chipman, and Grant, has been modified to permit the analysis of the evolved gases for hydrogen by means of a thermal conductivity cell. A properly prepared sample can be analyzed in 10 min with a probable error of ±0.12 ppm. A study of various methods for storage of hydrogen samples shows that samples can be safely held in a dry ice-acetone bath as long as six days. Storage in liquid nitrogen is necessary for samples to be held one week or more. HE vacuum tin-fusion method, as developed by I- Carney, Chipman and Grant,' is the only analytical procedure which has shown promise of being fast enough for use in the control of hydrogen during steelmaking. It was felt that further simplification and faster speed of operation could be effected by the use of thermal conductivity measurements for analysis of the gases evolved in the tin-fusion method. The application of conductivity measurements to the tin-fusion method is possible because: 1—the evolved gas is essentially a mixture of hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon monoxide with a hydrogen content usually over 50 pct, 2—the evolved gas is collected at a relatively low pressure, and 3— the thermal conductivities of CO and N2 are practically identical while that of hydrogen is very much greater. The major part of this research program was devoted to the construction and calibration of a vacuum tin-fusion apparatus which analyzes the evolved gases for hydrogen by means of a thermal conductivity cell. The second phase of the problem was associated with the development of a procedure for storage of samples prior to analysis. With the rapid quenching method for hydrogen sampling,' which seems to be the most practical for steel mill use, it is necessary that the samples be stored safely during the interval between sampling and analysis if the hydrogen content of the molten metal is to be maintained in the supersaturated solid samples. The thermal conductivity bridge has been used for a number of years in the analysis of certain gas mixtures. An elementary discussion of the theory and practice of gas analysis by thermal conductivity measurements is given by Minter.3 A more comprehensive discussion of the theory and of the various measuring circuits is presented by Daynes.' A complete knowledge of the theory and properties of the thermal conductivity of gases and gaseous mixtures can be gained by a study of the standard textbooks on the kinetic theory of gases."' The existing data on the thermal conductivity of single gases are reviewed by Hawkins: that for a number of binary gas mixtures by Daynes' and Lindsay." The thermal conductivity method may be applied to the determination of the composition of a binary mixture if: 1—the thermal conductivity of the mixture varies monotonically with composition, and 2— the two gases have measurably different thermal conductivities. The greater the difference between the two gases, the greater the sensitivity of the method.10 he method is applicable to the analysis of multicomponent mixtures when all of the gases in the mixture except one have nearly the same thermal conductivity. Fortunately, the mixture of hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbon monoxide evolved by the tin-fusion analysis' falls in this latter classification. The thermal conductivities of nitrogen and carbon monoxide are practically equal; and the thermal conductivity of hydrogen is approximately seven times that of the other two. Therefore, the thermal conductivity of a gaseous mixture of hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbon monoxide at known temperature and pressure can be related directly to the percentage of hydrogen in the mixture by suitable calibration. Usually the thermal conductivity of a mixture of gases is measured at atmospheric pressure where the thermal conductivity is independent of pressure over a wide pressure range. At very low pressures (below 1 mm Hg), the thermal conductivity of gases varies with the pressure. This phenomenon has been utilized in the Pirani vacuum gage for the measurement of pressures in the range of 10" to 10-0 mm of mercury.= Very little has been published concerning the variation of thermal conductivity with pressure at intermediate pressures between 1 mm Hg and 1 atm. However, preliminary measurements indicated that the thermal conductivities did vary with pressure over the range of pressures (up to 10 mm Hg) at which gases are delivered from the vacuum pump. Therefore, the calibration of the thermal conductivity cell had to be planned to include the effects of both gas composition and pressure. Such a calibration chart is shown in Fig. 4. The recovery of flour stress of recrylstallized are-cast molyhdenum after 10 pet prestrain at 150°C was studied for recovery temperatures of 725o 801o and 901oC. The yield phenomenon observed after recovery was such that the yield drop diminished and disappeared as recovery proceeded. A fractional flow-stress recovery parameter fr, was developed and it was shown that, independent of recovery ternperatzwe, equal f, values of about 0.16 produced superposition of stress-strain curves except for the initial yield phenomenon. The activation energy for low degrees oj recovery was found to he 32,600 cal per mole, in close agreement with a reported valzie for difjzdsion of carbon in molybdenum. For values of fr greater than about 0.15 where recovery was thought to predominate over strain aging, the activation energy varied from 43,600 to 82,500 cal per mole and increased with increasing recovery and recovery temperature. A 10 pet pre-strain shifted the ductile-brittle transition temperature, as indicated by tensile elongation, from 10°C. to about -22"C. A 100-hr recovery anneal at 801oC was shown to shift the transition temperature to about —5oC, the major shift occurring during the first hour of recovery. ThE recovery of cold-worked metals is accompanied by changes in the arrangement of the dislocations generated during cold work. In recent years, the use of transmission electron microscopy has allowed direct observation of some of the dislocation configurations formed, such as "tangles", networks, cells, subboundaries, and loops. These observations have recently been reviewed by Keh and Weissmann.' Accordingly, some understanding has been gained concerning the nature of the dislocation rearrangements involved. The relationship between recovery and the decrease of mechanical strength, however, has only recently been explored. Previous efforts of the authors were directed toward investigating the decrease of tensile flow stress of aluminum and Al-1 pet Mg during recovery2 and the effects of concurrent elastic and plastic strain on the flow-stress recovery of aluminum.3 In addition, an investigation of the effect of four different solute additions on the tensile flow-stress recovery of aluminum has been made.4 Many important metals, however, have the bee crystal structure, e.g., iron, molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, columbium, tantalum, and chromium. These metals might be expected to behave differently during recovery from those with other crystal structures for two reasons. First, the previous and present investigations of aluminum and its alloys have shown that tensile flow-stress recovery is strongly affected by foreign atoms in the lattice. In the bee metals, interstitial impurities are usually present and might be expected to have various effects upon both flow behavior and recovery. For example, heterogeneous yielding might occur during prestraining. The diffusion of these interstitials can also relock dislocations during recovery so that a yield point might be obtained upon restraining (strain aging). Second, some of the bee metals (e.g., iron, molybdenum, and tungsten) undergo the familiar structure-sensitive ductility transition and exhibit brittle fracture at suitably low temperatures. It is of considerable interest to determine the effects of recovery on the transition temperature of such metals. The purpose of the present investigation was to extend our knowledge of flow-stress recovery to the bee metals and to study the effects of recovery on the ductile-brittle transition temperature. Unalloyed recrystallized are-cast molybdenum was chosen as a test material, since it exhibits a well-defined ductility transition near room temperature. As in the previous studies, the degree of recovery was measured in terms of the decrease of tensile flow stress. Prestraining and restraining were carried out at 150°C to avoid the possibility of brittle fracture. During the early period of the construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, about 1838, in excavating for the canal, where the present town of Utica stands, hydraulic limestone was discovered, and its value was recognized. A kiln for calcining and a mill for grinding were erected, and the cement was used in the construction of the locks of the canal. This property was subsequently bought by the present owner, Mr. James Clark, and the work has been continued to the present time in much the same primitive manner as it was begun. The bed is exposed in the Illinois River valley by stripping off a few feet of the covering rock. It is from 4 feet to 6 feet 9 inches thick, and nearly level, dipping gently to the northeast. The Utica Cement Company's establishment, which is two miles west of Utica and two miles east of La Salle, was an outgrowth of the Illinois geological survey. The writer was in charge of the district which included La Salle county, and, in working out the details of the geology of that county, discovered, below the Utica bed, another workable hydraulic limestone, which makes its appearance in the northern bluff of the Illinois River valley, rising above the water level at the point where the company's works are established. This cement group, of which there are several thin beds, lies just below the St. Peter's sandstone, with a few feet intermediate of transition-rock, which appears to represent the Calciferous, and is exhibited in place, in concretionary form, at the top of the bluff. The hydraulic beds are very regular, and the one worked by the company is 10 feet thick; or, speaking more definitely, there are two beds, separated by 18 inches of sandstone, lying about two feet above the bottom, and the two beds are worked as one, the sandstone being first cut out and removed, to prevent mixture. Fatigrle of ionic crystals has been studied primarily in magnesinm oxide. under cyclic stress dislocations move irrreversibly; they multiply; slip bands form and grow; cracks mucleate and propagnte, and failure occurs. The use of ionic crystals such as MgO is advantageorus in such investigations because they are optically transparent. Individual dislocation Intersections with {100} surfaces may be observed with a standard microscope, using etch-pit techniques. Slip, deformation, crack .formation, and fracture in MgO crystals under cyclic stress are compared with cotrresponditzg processes in metals. ThE effect of cyclic loading in metals has been studied for many years. The appearance of slip lines is readily observed and the ensuing fracture may also be seen. From these observations it is possible to predict the behavior of a material and make an educated guess as to what is happening internally, but the actual changes taking place within the structure are not readily apparent. If one could obtain a material in which the individual glide components could be observed, it would be invaluable in determining the actual slip distribution resulting from cyclic loading as well as the distribution of slip in the neighborhood of a growing crack. BERYLLIUM is demanding more of the limelight, and the output of beryllium copper (containing 2% to~ 3 per cent of beryllium) seems to have grown 60 per cent above that of 1936, which was double that of 1935. There is increasing interest in beryllium-aluminum alloys and small quantities are being marketed at $50 per lb. for the contained beryllium. Other alloys also can be produced. Further price decreases for beryllium copper (now $23 per lb. for the contained beryllium) seem , possible and desirable. No difficulty has been experienced in obtaining beryl and a 'reserve stock has been built up. One supplier heretofore found reliable has offered to furnish 200 tons per month. Supplies during 1937 have come from the Black Hills in South Dakota, Colorado. India, and South America

FULLY a decade ago, demand for ground mica began to exceed supplies of scrap mica from manufacturing operations and of waste block from feldspar and sheet mica mining in the United States, with the result that in recent years the market has absorbed larger and larger quantities of mica recovered as a by-product from clay washing,1 as a joint product with kyanite,2 and by grinding schists. So far, only schists that contain a large percentage of mica have been utilized for making ground mica, but already there has been a good deal of wishful thinking with regard to recovering mica as an aid to the prospective working of low-grade gold ores and ores of certain base metals. With wet-ground mica selling at $60 to $100 a ton and even dry-ground mica worth over $20 a ton, many ores that could not be considered as otherwise workable under present conditions will show commercial possibilities if they can be made to yield even a relatively small percentage of salable mica. An interesting paper might be written on the coming role of industrial minerals as joint products of metal mines, It is largely a matter of mar-kets. Many years ago I watched the mess left behind the gold dredges in the mountains of Colorado and thought of the Denver sand and gravel operators who prided themselves upon their canniness in providing devices for catching gold merely as an incident to their regular business of selling what we miners classed as "tailings." Nowadays almost every milling or mining operation near settled communities finds use for at least part of its waste for road material or concrete aggregate and several eastern iron mines have gone into the crushed-stone business. Promoters now mention fertilizer "filler" as potentially salable at all the way from $1 to $10 a ton, or whatever is needed to cover costs of mining and treating the "ore" and leave the metal values as "clear profit." Preferred orientations in rolled and annealed titanium sheets were determined by the Geiger counter spectrometer X-ray diffraction technique. Five annealing textures dependent upon the temperature range of annealing were found, and in order of increasing annealing temperature pendent upon the temperature range are: 1—a deformation like texture, 2—a rotated inorder a-recrystallization temperature texture, 3-a retained u-recrysraIlization texture, on annealing at lower temperatures of the ß-region, 4—a transformation texture based on recrystallized a and predicted by the Burgers' relationship, and 5—a ,ß-cube texture. These results are examined in terms of current theories of recrystallization textures. UMEROUS investigators have described the tex- ture obtained by cold rolling the hexagonal metals, titanium, zirconium, and beryllium, which have c/a ratios less than that of ideal packing, 1.633. The basal planes are rotated out of the rolling plane, about the rolling direction, so that the basal poles are tilted toward the transverse direction as shown schematically in Fig. la. In all instances but one,' it was also reported that the [1010] direction was parallel to the rolling direction (see Fig. lb). Hot rolling has been reported as causing a similar tilt of the basal poles in the transverse direction (see Fig. la) and causing the [1010] direction also to be parallel to the rolling direction as shown schematically in Fig. lb. Annealing after deformation does not appreciably change the tilt of the basal poles in the transverse direction." Beryllium2-7 continues to have the [1010] direction in the rolling direction after annealing, and similar observations for titanium and zirconium' . have been reported for annealing at fairly low temperatures, again as in Fig. lb. At higher annealing temperatures, however, the recrystallized grains of titanium" and zirconium have an orientation such that the [1120] direction is approximately in the rolling direction, although the basal poles are still inclined in the transverse direction. Figs. la and lc show the resulting orientations schematically. This change in orientation has been described as a nominally ±30° rotation of the hexagonal crystallites about the basal poles of the cold rolled texture and is apparent from the results which are summarized in Table I for investigations with the X-ray diffraction technique employing film. The angles y, , and ß are indicated in Fig. 2 which represents the stereographic projection of (1070) poles for the mean orientation of a pole figure. Texture determinations for titanium using the Geiger counter spectrometer have provided similar results except that in some instances additional components of the texture were proposed, as shown by the summary of data in the upper half of Table 11. On the other hand, the spectrometer technique, when applied to zirconium,* has revealed a splitting Recently completed studies of the textures of annealed zirconium", show zirconium to possess textures very similar to those reported here for titanium. Therefore, much of this discussion will include zirconium by virtue of its close similarity to titanium in pref erred orientations. of the intense areas of the pole figure for samples annealed at 600°C. This splitting could be described by a 7" rotation of the tilt axis about the normal to the rolling plane. Such a splitting for the annealed texture relative to the cold rolled texture was not observed in other determinations for either zirconium or titanium using the less sensitive film X-ray methoe and makes the relationship between the two types of texture more complex than the simple rotation about the (0001) pole based on film work. The more precise investigations on zirconium permit the descriptions in the lower part of Table 11, which show that the texture depends quantitatively on the temperature of annealing. When zirconium is annealed at temperatures up to 400°C, the texture is similar to the cold rolled texture, while annealing in the range 500" to 900°C produces a texture which is only approximately described as [11%] in the rolling direction. More precisely described results for zirconium show that the two types of splitting ( 1—about an axis in the rolling plane through an angle given in the second column in Table II and 2—about the normal to the rolling plane through an angle given in the third column of Table 11) depend on annealing temperature. The [1120 is the rolling direction only when the annealing temperature is in the vicinity of 900°C

The purposes, types, preparation, and testing of flocculants are discussed. A flocculation compendium is included, indicating choice of flocculant for a given set of conditions. An economic evaluation of the process is presented. Solid-liquid separation is a major expense in most mineral processing flowsheets today. Proper use of flocculation can often lower the overall cost of a solid-liquid separation by reducing the size of sedimentation or filtration equipment. PURPOSE OF FLOCCULATION When is use of a flocculant justified in terms of overall process economy? 1) when it results in process improvement, such as producing a clear liquor for electrolysis, precipitation, ion exchange, or solvent extraction; 2) when it results in satisfying requirements of pollution abatement ordinances; 3) when it results in increased recovery of values that would otherwise be lost; or 4) when it results in considerable savings in capital expenditure due to use of smaller equipment. When can the use of a flocculant adversely effect overall process economy? 1) when it results in increased filter cake moisture, 2) when it results in decreased filtration rates, 3) when it results in considerable bulking of sedimentation underflow, 4) when it contaminates either the supernatant or sludge, or 5) when the cost of using the flocculant is greater than the savings due to its use. First step in consideration of flocculants for a given application is establishment of desired goals in terms of increased clarity of effluent, increased recovery of solids, or decreased size of equipment. The most economical solution to a solid-liquid separation problem is that combination of equipment and flocculant costs which meets the established goals at the lowest total annual expenditure. This economic decision can be made only after technical data has been obtained as outlined in next four sections. TYPES OF FLOCCULATION Flocculation is a process wherein individual particles are united into more or less tightly bound agglomerates or flocs, thereby increasing effective particle size of solids suspended in a liquid. Degree of flocculation of a suspension of finely divided solids in a liquid is controlled by a combination of probability of collision between particles and probability of adhesion after the collision has occurred.' Probability of collision can be increased commercially through use of a paddle-type flocculator, combination flocculator, and clarifier or flocculating-type feedwell. Probability of adhesion usually can be increased by addition of a reagent known as a flocculant. Reagents act as flocculants through one or a combination of three possible mechanisms. The first is electrolytic neutralization of inter molecular repulsive force due to Zeta potential. This neutralization enables Van der Waal's cohesive force to hold the particles together after they collide.' The second is the precipitation, within a definite pH range, of voluminous metallic hydroxide flocs which entrap fine particles. This process is known as coagulation.14 Third is the bridging of two or more particles by either natural or synthetic long-chain, high-molecular-weight organic polymers. This bridging is accomplished by adsorption of two particles at different sites on the same molecule or by bonding of two molecules, each adsorbed to a different particle. Considerable effort has been expended in explaining the action of these polyelec-trolytes and detailed accounts are available in the literature. CHOICE OF FLOCCULANTS It is impossible, at the present time, to specify the optimum type or amount of flocculant for a given application from a knowledge of the material to be treated. The standard procedure is to choose reagents or combination of reagents most likely to be effective on the slurry; then test them.' The accompanying Flocculation Compendium (Table I) contains details of all currently available reagents sold as flocculants and it should be used when selecting the group of reagents for tests. IT is a well-known fact that martensitic steels show a greater resistance to brittle fracture than do pearlitic and bainitic steels. It was, therefore, thought worthwhile to investigate the mode of brittle fracture with respect to structure by studying the effect of various austenite decomposition products on the propagation of brittle fracture in steel by means of electron microscopy. Newly developed replication techniques together with the advantages of the electron microscope such as great depth of field, available high magnification and easy adaptation to stereophotography make electron microscopy very suitable for fracture studies. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE An essentially plain carbon steel containing 0.56 pct C, 1.30 pct Mn, 0.02 pct P, 0.03 pct S and 0.22 pct Si was used in this investigation. The following table gives the heat treatments used to obtain the various austenite decomposition products: The resulting austenite grain size from the 870°C austenitization treatment was about an ASTM No. 7 grain size. The specimens which were 2 in. long, 1/4-in. diam bars were austenitized in a tube furnace through which argon gas was blown. The tube was not, however, air-free and the specimens were not completely oxide-free. Isothermal treatments were done in a lead bath. With the exception of the fully hardened specimen and the one as-isothermally transformed at 300°C the heat treated specimens were notched in the following fashion with a jeweler's saw. A cut about 0.08 in. deep was made perpendicular to the length of the bar. The specimen then was rotated about 45 deg and another cut about 0.08 in. deep was made. In the case of the hard martensitic and bainitic specimens, only one cut was made and the depth was not controlled. The design of the two-cut notch caused fracture to initiate at the point of intersection of the two saw cuts. The specimens were broken at -196°C in a Charpy impact testing machine. In order to hold the specimens securely in the impact machine two square pieces of mild steel were made about 5/8 in. long having the same cross section as that of a standard Charpy specimen but containing a hole 1/4 in. diam through the center of the cross-section. These adapters were slipped over the ends of the test specimen which was then secured tightly by means of set screws in the adapters. The specimen with the adapters was cooled to -196°C in liquid N,, then placed in the impact machine and broken within 3 sec. One half of the broken specimen was used for the electron microscope study of the actual fracture surface. The other half was nickel-plated and a cross section through the notch and fracture was polished for electron microscope examination. Carbon replicas of the fracture specimens for the electron microscope study were made essentially according to Bradley's evaporation technique.' Both direct carbon and two-stage carbon replication techniques were used. In the case of the direct carbon technique, a thin layer of carbon was evaporated first at an angle of about 45 deg to the mean fracture surface and then another film of carbon was evaporated normally to the fracture surface. The carbon replica was freed electrolytically.2 The specimen was made an anode in a 10 pct Nital polishing solution. It was etched intermittently by shutting off the power now and then. The freed replica was washed in 40 to 50 pct water solution of nitric acid for 10 min or so, then washed in water and picked up on a screen for examination. The two-stage carbon replication technique involved first making a primary replica of cellulose * acetate from which a carbon replica was then made. One side of a strip of cellulose acetate wet with acetone was pressed lightly against the surface of the specimen, allowed to dry and then stripped. Prior to the deposition of carbon, which was done at 90 deg to the cellulose acetate replica surface, chromium was evaporated at 45 deg. After the carbon evaporation the cellulose acetate was dissolved in acetone according to the Jaffe method3 leaving the carbon replica preshadowed with chromium for examination.

The Cordero mine is located in the Nevada portion of the Opalite Mining district that straddles the Oregon-Nevada state boundary. The mercury deposits of the district occur along the margins of the broad east-west graben valley of McDermitt Creek. The only other major producers, the Opalite and Bretz mines, on the northern margin of the graben have thus far exploited only shallow deposits within 100 feet of the surface. Through December 1965, Cordero has produced 94,680 flasks of mercury, the most of which came from the large underground cinnabar deposit. Nearly all of the mercury ore deposits in this district have been found in Miocene rhyolitic intrusives, flows, tuffs, and lake beds. These rhyolites have been argillically altered at depth and extensively silicified at or near the surface. These silicified areas or "opalite" masses were the original cinnabar-bearing outcrops.

Summary This paper reviews the developments in uranium process technology as a result of modern trends in the design of ion exchange equipment. The operation of the Cloete-Streat fluidised bed contactor is described and pilot-plant development of this contactor for uranium slurry work at Imperial College is outlined. The properties of a suitable ion exchange resin for slurry treatment are discussed, together with a description of relevant rheological properties of ore suspensions. A prediction of ion exchange resin- slurry behaviour is presented in order to establish the feasible operating limits for this type of R-I-P contactor.

The Texas Gulf Coast had a rather disappointing year in the type of oil fields found. Although 17 fields were found in the area during the year, as against 21 fields in 1938, no field of major proportion was discovered. Of these 17 fields, 11 were oil fields, 4 were gas and distillate fields, and 2 were gas fields. The wildcat activity for the year resulted in about 400 dry holes, although probably 10 per cent of these were edge wells close to proved areas. During the year, 1455 oil and gas wells were completed as compared to 1637 wells in 1938, a decrease of 11 per cent. Production for the Texas Gulf Coast area for the year was 100,253,937 bbl. as against 92,530,467 bbl. produced in 1938, an increase of 8 per cent. The daily average production was 274,668 bbl. for the 365 days in the year, although only 252 producing days were allowed by the Railroad Commission; that is, 69 per cent of the time as compared to 71 days shut in for 80 per cent of the time producing in 1938. The total number of oil and distillate wells producing at the end of 1939 was 9495 as against 8451 at the end of 1938—an increase of 1044 wells, or 12 per cent. Of these wells, 6547 were flowing and 2948 pumping, or 69 per cent flowing. At the end of the previous year, 66 per cent of the wells were flowing. New Fields Angleton, Brazoria County.—The Angleton field was discovered by the completion of Glen McCarthy's No. 1 Carr in October for an initial production of 180 bbl. a day of 50" gravity oil through 11/64-in. choke with 3400 Ib. on tubing. The field is 1½ miles east of the town of Anchor. The discovery undoubtedly can be credited to the reflection seismograph, since several companies worked the area from 1933 onward with this type of exploration. The principal block was taken by the Humble company in 1934. Two deep holes by Humble revealed the presence of structure, although both were dry. The Humble and Sun companies later contributed money and acreage toward the drilling of the discovery well. The production is from a sand in the Frio, about 1700 ft.

This type of flow is encountered when gas and oil are produced from a well; when water is removed from gas wells with siphon lines and when liquids are elevated by means of air or gas lift. Although a number of investigator1-7 have published data on the flow of gas-liquid mixtures, in only a few cases has the experimental setup been devised to permit visual study. In the fields of heat transmission, such as the boiling of liquids and the study of the critical phenomena of the hydrocarbons, researchers have been able to throw additional light on heretofore unexplainable happenings through actual observation in glass apparatus. This investigation was therefore undertaken in order to obtain qualitative as well as quantitative results for air-water flow. Experimental Apparatus and Procedure The flow column used in these tests was made of standard 2-in. pipe and was approximately 98 ft. in height. Pyrex observation sections 2 ft. long having the same internal diameter as the wrought-iron pipe were placed at 14-ft. intervals in the column. The bottom of the tube was cut off square and terminated in the mixing chamber. No perforated nipple or footpiece of any kind was used. To the top of the column was fastened a semicircular return bend having a 4-ft. radius. The flow column was supported by a standard cable-tool drilling derrick (Fig. 1) into which were built observation platforms at each Pyrex section.

IN THE operation of oil properties there are various difficulties with pumping wells which can often be overcome or greatly lessened if sufficient attention is, directed towards pump and tubing problems. The difficulties referred to are the wearing out of pumps, sanding up of pumps, and the sanding up of the hole. As the perforations in the oil strings are large and the oil and sand loose and unconsolidated considerable trouble is often encountered in pumping wells due to the ease with which' the sand can come into the holes. DETERMINING FLUID LEVEL In determining the proper depth at which to tube a well it is essential to first find out something about the behavior of the fluid in 'the hole: Facts in regard to this natter can be obtained by finding the fluid level on pulling the tubing, by making a pumping test on the well tubed to various depths, and by bailing tests during cleaning out work. In ordinary oil field operations it is customary to take the fluid level at the time of pulling the tubing. This 'can only be done when the pump is not sanded up. For three years The Hudson Coal Co. has used egg anthracite instead of coke in its foundry cupola. It has long passed the stage of being told it cannot be done—the metal would be cold, of poor quality, or the speed of operation would be low. From observation, from use and from test. we know that our metal is about average; the cast iron invokes no adverse comment from the machine shop and the speed suits our foundry requirements. We have there-iore resolved into practice anthracite combustion processes in an industrial furnace formerly using coke, under conditions suitable to our needs. When it comes to translating what we know into use in another cupola, however, where operating conditions may be different, or to explaining why, with seemingly the same conditions in our own cupola, we have attained sometimes a temperature of 2800° in the metal and at another time 2600°, or a speed of 5 tons per hour against 2 35 tons per hour, we cannot do it. We cannot do this because there seems to be an unbridged gap between laboratory ideas on combustion and practical ideas on com-bustiqn, which we have been unable to cross in terms understandable to us as practical consumers. This gap or bridge centers around the problem of how combustion actually takes place; and we believe it is controlled by two factors: (I) the character of the surface of the fuel and (2) the space provided and needed within which the oxygen of the air is allowed to or can act on that surface. It has long been contended on behalf of coke that porosity is an important factor in combustion, although, admittedly, there are two schools of opposing thought on this question, as revealed in technical literature. It has been understood generally that a light, porous coke is the best metallurgical fuel because there are more square inches of carbon exposed to the blast of air, therefore more useful carbon-dioxide reactions can take place in the given space between the entrance of the air and the point where useful work is done. It is now our general idea that the heavier and the harder the coal, the better the metallurgical fuel, provided the surface of that fuel is suitable for fast reaction with the oxygen. Time and Space A cupola is loaded in layers of fuel and iron. The horizontal line where the first charge of iron rests on the coal is the top of the bed coal. With us that is 22 in., usually, above the tuyeres where the air enters. This means 600 lb. of coal. Every subsequent coal layer is 100 to 125 lb. of coal, and that 100 to 125 lb. of coal melts 1000 lb. of iron at around 2700° in the ladle. This quantity of coal represents a 3-in. layer spread across the cupola. The question arises: If this 3 in. of coal will melt 1000 lb. of metal, why was it necessary to use 600 lb., or 22 in., of coal beneath and between the first charge of iron and the air entrance?
