The theory of the Askania magnetometer, as well as a complete discussion of all factors influencing magnetometer readings, is very ably described by J. Wallace Joyce. We will assume that the reader is thoroughly familiar with this theory and we will use whenever possible the same notations for the physical values involved in the theory. On the other hand, we believe that the principal formulas of the magnetometer can be deduced much more easily by the use of differential calculus than by the methods employed by Joyce. Consequently, we are presenting herewith a resume of the theory of the vertical magnetometer in order to determine the correct formula of the temperature coefficient which we propose to compensate.

Uranium-base alloys exposed to high temperature water fail either by uniform oxidation or by sudden cracking and disintegration of the metal. The disintegration results from the oxidation of a second phase which is precipitated during the corrosion process. The precipitate has been identified as a metastable hydride of uranium. URANIUM-BASE alloys consisting of the body-centered-cubic ? phase are susceptible to two different modes of corrosion failure when exposed to high temperature water. In the first process, a smooth oxide film is formed on the metal surface which continually flakes off during exposure and results in a uniform weight loss of the specimen. The oxide is present as a thin, adherent layer whose thickness remains approximately constant. As the metal oxidizes during corrosion, a nonadherent layer is built up on this film and continually sloughs off. Coincident with the uniform corrosion just mentioned, another process occurs which eventually leads to failure of the metal by cracking and general disintegration. The failure takes place during a relatively short time compared to the total exposure. To distinguish this type of failure from the uniform corrosion, the cracking or disintegration of the metal will be referred to as discontinuous failure. For the ? phase uranium alloys it is discontinuous failure rather than uniform corrosion that limits the useful corrosion life of the alloy. This paper will be concerned primarily with the mechanism of discontinuous failure. Physical Changes During Corrosion—The alloys used in this investigation were ? phase uranium alloys containing 7 to 12 wt pet Mo or Cb. The preparation of the alloys, the method of corrosion testing, and the actual corrosion results are presented in another paper.' The ? quenching treatment consists of annealing the alloy for 24 hr at 900°C in a sealed Vycor glass tube filled with helium and then water quenching to room temperature without breaking the tube. The corrosion behavior typical of a ? phase uranium alloy is shown in Fig. 1. This specimen was a U-12 wt pet Mo alloy tested in pressurized, degassed water at 650°F. The corrosion rate was practically constant at 0.28 mg per sq cm per hr or increased slightly until about 15 to 20 days of exposure, when the onset of discontinuous failure occurred in this particular sample, and the specimen soon began to crack and disintegrate. The simultaneous increase in the observed corrosion rate is a result of the increased area of exposure due to cracking of the specimen. The microstructure of a specimen that failed by cracking is shown in Fig. 2. The presence of a plate-like precipitate can readily be seen. Metallographic examination of corrosion specimens reveals that the onset of discontinuous failure is always preceded by the formation of a plate-like second phase in the ? uranium matrix. Hydrogen analyses of specimens periodically withdrawn from corrosion test reveal that the hydrogen content of the alloy increases on exposure to the high temperature water, as shown in Fig. 3. The hydrogen is available as a corrosion product resulting from the formation of UO2 by the reaction of the alloy with water. Specimens analyzed just prior to discontinuous failure contained as much as 1200 ppm H, whereas the plate-like phase appears to precipitate out at a hydrogen concentration of between 10 and 25 ppm. The observed increase in hydrogen content prior to and during the formation of the plate-like precipitate suggests that this constituent may be a hydride of uranium. Additional evidence linking the identity of this phase to a hydride is that it can be removed by vacuum annealing at temperatures of 100°C and above. Decomposition products of the ? phase would certainly not dissolve at such temperatures, nor could other likely products of corrosion, such as oxides, be dissipated at any of the test temperatures. The precipitation and growth of the second phase during corrosion is accompanied by an increase in hardness of the specimen. A study is made of the microstructural changes produced in armco and pure iron subjected to alternating torsion at amplitudes above and below the knee of the S/N curve. The aim was to identify the basic mechanisms of fatigue and to find why they should give rise to a sharp S/N knee in contrast to the type of S/N curve shown by fcc metals. It is found that the basic structural change above the knee in the iron is a pronounced cell formation in the grains, which determines irregular micro-cracks, and below the knee a dispersion of fine slip that determines a dispersed pore formation in the grains. Comparison of these changes with those in fcc metals similarly tested shows that they do not include an intermediate structural change, a concentrating of slip in narrow bands with associated slip-band cracking, that characterizes the fcc metals and accounts for their different type of S/N curve. RECENT conferences on basic mechanisms of fatigue emphasize that fatigue damage takes many forms: for example, cracking in slip bands (Thompson1), at grain boundaries and inclusions (Hempel'), at precipitation zones in alloys (Han-stock, Forsythe), or at surface notch-peak effects, both hypothetical (Mott, cottrel16) and observed (Wood). Evidently it is not easy to see in this diversity a basic mechanism. At the same time the contributions suggest that some reconciliation may be possible if distinctions are drawn between three phases of the fatigue process: initiation of damage at nuclei, distribution of these nuclei, and the final macroscopic crack system. In initiation, the relevant features appear to be that nuclei may appear early, at least by 1/100th to 1/1000th of the life of a test specimen; that they may do so at many independent centers, appearing according to some observationsa as pores or voids; and that they are not necessarily self-propagating, damage spreading rather by their multiplication. In distribution, the relevant feature appears to be that they form preferentially in zones where the microstructure becomes abnormally strained (as defined more closely below). Now in these two phases the basic fatigue process should be systematic. But, at the same time, the "abnormal strains" in particular set the stage for considerable diversity in the final phase of macroscopic cracking, for where zones of abnormal strain develop will depend on what kind of fatigue deformation is applied and what kind of prior processing the test material has had. It takes nearly three pounds of gasoline to deliver one pound of bombs, filled with petroleum explosives, on an enemy objective. Every American soldier overseas requires an average of more than fifty gallons of petroleum products per week, with the oil used by Navy and supply ships and America's Allies boosting the consumption of oil per soldier to an even higher figure. Every oil well in the United States now must produce each day an average of four barrels of oil for war and combat jobs. More than fifty million gallons of gasoline, fuel oils, lubricants, and other petroleum products are now going directly to the fighting forces every day.

A CLEAR understanding of the factors that deter-mine the consumption of zinc metal is essential to a proper survey of the future of the industry and the relation of the several producing districts. With a view of explaining a sound basis for the consider-ation of some of the problems facing the zinc-mining industry of the Oklahoma-Kansas and Missouri district some of these factors are here set out. The zinc industry of the United States furnishes metal for three major uses, viz.: (1) zinking iron and steel (galvanizing); (2) brass making; (3) sheet rolling. Other important uses are for lead desilverization, the manufacture of castings, including die castings, and the manufacture of zinc oxide by the French process, which consists in burning spelter. The use of zinc for galvanizing comprises the coating of sheets, tubes, wire and shaped products, the latter ranging from chains to buckets. The brass-making industry may be sub-divided into manufacture of red brass, yellow brass and white brass, the percentage of zinc in these products being roughly 30, 40 and 80 respectively. The use of white brass is relatively a new thing and it may attain considerable proportions as a substitute for yellow brass. There are many solution mining operations that use solar ponds as a mineral recovery step. Other locations in the world are now under investigation to recover minerals by solution mining but require the cheap energy of solar ponds to make the recovery viable. This paper shows a step-by-step material balance system that can be used in both simple and complex solar ponds. Use of this system will help the engineer determine if solar ponding efficiency can be improved or if solar ponding will work at all with a given set of conditions. Even the most complicated solar pond can be reduced to six flow streams. These are (1) feed, (2) exit, (3) leakage, (4) entrainment, (5) salts, and (6) evaporation. The equations developed in this paper will allow the solar pond engineer to easily evaluate the effect of each of the flow streams on the mineral production of a pond or pond complex.

On December 31, 1959, there existed in the United States 15,993 slot-type coke ovens capable of producing 81,447,700 net tons of coke. These ovens were concentrated in 74 coke plants in 21 different states. As of the same date, there were 7448 beehive ovens in existence at 45 plants in the states of Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Total annual capacity of the existing beehive ovens was 4,368,800 net tons, but only 5148 ovens with a capacity of 3,131,600 tons were in operating condition. It is interesting to compare the average dimensions of slot-type ovens built during recent years with the 30 ft x 5 ½ ft x 16 ½ in. ovens erected at Syracuse, N. Y. in 1892. A composite oven built according to the average dimensions of all those erected between 1954 and 1958, for instance, would be 39 ft long. 12 ft high, and 18 in. in width. The coal capacity would be 16 tons as against the 4.4 tons which could be charged to the Syracuse ovens. Of the 15.993 slot- type ovens in existence at the end of 1959, by far the greater number were built by the Koppers Co. whose total of 11,280 ovens included 7891 Koppers- Becker and 3389 Koppers ovens. Of the remainder, there were 3260 Wilputte, 1350 Semet-Solvay, 63 Otto, and 40 Simon Carves ovens. By-product coke oven plants are usually classified either as furnace or merchant plants. According to the definitions used by the US Bureau of Mines, the former are "those that are owned by or financially affiliated with iron and steel companies whose main business is producing coke for use in their own blast furnaces. All other coke plants are classified as merchant. They include those that manufacture metallurgical, industrial, and residential heating grades of coke for sale on the open market; coke plants associated with chemical companies or gas utilities; and those affiliated with local iron works, where only a small part (less than 50 pct of their output) is used in affiliated blast furnaces." The annual coke capacity of the merchant plants during 1959 was 10,393,000 tons. However, the by-product oven of today is essentially an appurtenance of the iron and steel industry, rather more than 87 pct of total by- product coking capacity being concentrated at furnace plants. This was not always so. There was a time when the merchant plants played a much greater part in meeting the US demand for coke and gas. High noon for the merchant plants was reached during the early 1930's. By 1932 there were as many by- product oven installations being operated by the merchant sector of the industry as by the coke divisions of the iron and steel industry (44 of each), and in the same year the merchant plants produced 46.5 pct of all by-product coke made in the country. Since that time their contribution has drastically declined. In 1940 merchant plants were responsible for only 23.2 pct of total US production, and by 1950 their number had decreased to 30 plants which turned out 18.5 pct of the total by-product coke made. At the end of 1959 only 20 of the 74 existing by-product oven installations were merchant plants. They ac- counted for 12.5 pct of the year's production, or 6,849,786 net tons. This percentage has remained fairly constant since 1954. There are several reasons for the decline of the merchant coking industry. For example. On the grounds of economy, quality control, continuity of supply, and so on, the iron and steel industry usually prefers to control its own mines and carbonize its own coal at or near to the blast furnace rather than rely on independent operators for metallurgical coke. As the steel companies have enlarged their own coking facilities, so has the need for coke obtained from other sources declined. Furthermore, not only has the steel industry increased in self-sufficiency by building mare coke ovens during recent years, but it has also progressively improved the fuel efficiency of its blast furnaces. During the years 1947-49 the average coke consumption per ton of pig iron was 1892.8 lb. During 1958 the corresponding figure was 1613.4 lb. There are many individual furnaces where still better results are being obtained, and further reductions in the average may be expected. Perhaps the greatest threat to the merchant coking plant has been the fantastic increase in the use of natural gas and petroleum products for purposes which manufactured gas once served. So deadly has the com- petition from natural gas and oil been that it has almost eliminated by-product oven installations owned by public utilities. In the peak years of the early 1930's there were 23 such public utility plants. In 1960 only two were left. One of these, owned by the Citizens Gas and Coke Utility, was at Indianapolis, Ind.; the other was the plant operated by the Philadelphia Electric Co. at Chester, Pa. Recently Hiller1 reported results on the impairment of the strength of quartz glass rods through wetting, indicating that there was general agreement with the prediction of the Griffith formula in that for the liquids used the rods were weakest in water i.e. the liquid which probably had the greatest free energy of immersion. The Griffith equation predicts that the tensile stress necessary to propagate a crack of length c is where ? is the interfacial free energy, E Young's modulus. Since for a solid immersed in a liquid of surface tension ?L and contact angle 8 at the solid-liquid-gas contact, ?s - ?SL = ?L cos ? where ?s is the surface free energy of the solid. Hence comparison between ?L cos 0 and strength impairment should be possible. In a study of the usefulness of the Kuznetsov pendulum2 as a means of studying rock drillability we have determined the effects of various liquids on the pendulum hardness of Bavarian limestone. The pendulum used had diamond points (Burgess Vibro-graver), a period of 1.14 sec and a total on sample weight of 1191 g. The decline of the pendulum oscillations was recorded by a light beam on light sensitive paper carried on a kymograph. Rehbinder's expression relating hardness to amplitude attenuation as a function of time can be written In A = - (1/H) t + In Ao where A, A, = amplitude at time t and initial amplitude respectively, H = hardness parameter, and t = time. The line of best fit to the experimental points was determined using the IBM 7090 electronic computer, the computer also gave A, by extrapolation to zero time. The results for the various liquids tested are given in Table I and Fig. 1. In considering the magnificent success of Mr. Gayley's bold experiment of applying dry blast to the blast-furnace, whereby a saving of 20 per cent. of fuel per ton of iron is effected, the question arises whether still further economy in fuel is possible, and, if so, how it is to be attained. The manner in which the heat generated in the furnace is utilized in the production of pig-iron may be determined, by the method of Bell and Gruner, for any furnace for which the necessary data are obtainable ; and the study of the operation, under various conditions, of a number of furnaces, for which such information has been worked out, should enable us to form some conclusion on the subject. The tables and calculations here given cover the operations of several furnaces reported in our Transactions ; also the two furnaces using natural and dry blast ill Mr. Gayley's experiment, for which the heat-equation has been worked out by Prof. Joseph W. Richards in his admirable discussion ' of Mr. Gayley's paper, The Application of Dry Air Blast to the Manufacture of Iron, and, finally, various hypothetical furnaces. It is not the purpose of the writer to set forth in these notes anything new or surprising in blast-furnace practice, but simply to lay before the Institute the somewhat unusual results obtained during a period of six consecutive months, ending April 30, 1896, at the Dover furnace of the Penn Iron and Coal Co., and to give, with these results, the conditions under which they were obtained, and all figures pertaining to that period. This plant was entirely rebuilt, on thoroughly modern and improved plans, in the spring of 1895, by Frank C. Roberts & Co., of Philadelphia.

The use of piezoelectric semiconducting materials for the fahrication of ultrasonic transducers has raised the upper fundamental frequency limit for transducers from about 200 mc to above 10 kmc, Several types of semiconductor transducer configurations have been proposed and examined experimentally. Depletion-layer transducers have been made and operated at frequencies below 1 kmc hut they appear to he better suited for operation at considerably higher frequencies around 10 knzc. Diffusion-layer transducers have been made and operated in the range 50 to 1000 mc and have exhihited considerably improved conversion losses and bandwidths compared with other transducers available in the frequency range. A variety of novel structures are possible using these new types of transducers, some of which could lead to substantial advances both in research and in the fabrication of ultrasonic delay lines and memory elements. THE field of ultrasonics today spans some five decades of the frequency spectrum from the audible to the kmc range and finds applications ranging from fundamental research into the atomic structure of matter to the degreasing of machine parts. To cover this wide range it has been necessary to develop a great many types of ultrasonic trandsucers utilizing a variety of materials and physical phenomena. The first ultrasonic transducers were made during World War I for a submarine-detection system. They consisted of plates of single-crystal quartz bonded between metal plates and were one of the first applications of the phenomenon of piezoelectricity discovered nearly 30 years previously. Despite the many advances which have been made in transducer technology, piezoelectric transducers using single-crystal quartz are still used almost exclusively for application above about 30 mc. Transducers at these frequencies are normally made in the form of thin quartz plates which are then bonded onto the medium in which the ultrasonic wave is to be propagated. The crystallographic orientation and geometry of these plates determines the type of wave generated and the way in which the efficiency of the electromechanical conversion varies with frequency. Analysis of the design parameters shows1 that the frequency of maximum efficiency (the fundamental or resonant frequency) is that frequency at which the transducer is approximately half the wavelength of the ultrasonic wave in the material. As the frequency increases, the ultrasonic wavelength, and therefore the optimum transducer thickness, decreases and in practice the fabrication of quartz transducers with fundamental freauencies above 100 mc becomes extremely difficult due to the extreme thinness required. For frequencies above 100 mc quartz transducers can be used in overtone-mode operation, and for very high frequencies (500 to 24,000 me) a technique using a quartz rod inserted in a high-Q microwave cavity4 is available. These techniques, however, exhibit comparatively low fractional bandwidths and rather poor conversion efficiencies. The present trend in ultrasonics is towards high frequencies and greater bandwidth to allow the use of shorter pulses which can give increased discrimination in radar-system delay lines and greater storage capacity in computer applications. SOME PHRASEMAKER has aptly said that nature made aluminum light but research made it strong. Research has been a vital element in the past progress of the aluminum industry and its future growth likewise depends upon the application of the results of research. The role of aluminum products in World War II is well known and this metal will certainly be increasingly important in the postwar world. Some of the principal developments in the war years were in the field of high-strength aluminum alloys. New and stronger alloys were developed which enabled designers to get increased speed and performance in our fighter planes and bombers. The aircraft industry will continue to use these new materials for peacetime passenger and cargo airplanes. High-strength alloys will also find structural applications in trucks, buses, trains, ships, and bridges.

The Republic mine, situated forty miles from Marcus, a station on the Spokane Falls and Northern Railroad, in the northeastern part of the State of Washington, was located in 1896, but no development-work was dolie until the spring of 1897. While much of the ore mined since then has been rich enough for shipment to smelters, a method of locally treating the lower-grade ores soon became a matter of prime importance, because only about 40 per cent. of the values could be recovered by plain amalgamation, even with ores assaying 4 to 5 ounces of gold per ton. Experiments with cyanidation, in various ways, led to the adoption of the Pelatan-Clerici process and the erection on this system of a 10-ton experimental plant, which was later increased to a capacity of 35 tons per day. THE taconites in general are hard, tough ores, difficult to grind. Liberation of iron mineral constituents usually is accomplished by grinding the ore through at least 100 mesh, and often it has been found necessary to grind substantially through 325 mesh to achieve satisfactory recovery and grade in the concentration process. Because of the fineness of grind required and the enormous tonnages of material contemplated for treatment in the future, costs resulting from grinding media wear and power consumption, together with capital investment required for comminution, approach astronomical figures. Economy in any one of these elements per ton of material ground could very well reflect a considerable saving to the ferrous industry in yearly costs. With this in mind, the Research Laboratories of Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. have launched a program to discover means of effecting this economy. The initial phase of the work as described here deals with a heat treatment of crushed raw ore, followed by thermal shock in cooling, for the preparation of rod mill feed. Several investigators 1-5 have noted an improvement in the grindabilities of ores treated in this manner. One investigator2 subjected low grade iron ores to heat treatment in an electric furnace. Basing his conclusions on screen analyses of crushed products, he observed that treated ore was more easily crushed than the untreated. He reported that observation of the treated and untreated ore through a microscope revealed cracks following the grain boundaries in treated ore, whereas no cracks were present in untreated ore. However, few if any have quantified the improvement in terms of total hp hours saved, reduction of wear of grinding media, or reduction of capital costs of grinding equipment involved. By means of Bond rod mill and ball mill grindabilities6 and by comparative wear tests, the conditions maintained during this investigation have been definitely evaluated. Heat treatment experiments have been made on a batch scale in a muffle furnace, followed by continuous scale experiments in a rotary kiln under various conditions of temperature, atmosphere, retention time, and quenching to determine the combination that would give the greatest improvement in the grindability of a taconite without affecting adversely the magnetic susceptibility of the magnetite. From these data, relative costs have been calculated for grinding both untreated and heat treated ore on a basis of plant capacity of 120 tons per hour. Heat requirements for a rotary kiln, as well as the kiln capacity required for the treatment, have been estimated. For these tests 50 tons of ore were obtained from the Aurora mine of the Erie Mining Co., Hibbing, Minn. The ore was reported' to have been selected from the magnetic portion of the lower chert horizons. An average chemical analysis of this portion is shown in Table I and an approximate mineralogical analysis is shown in Table II. No attempt was made to differentiate between the various silicates because the compositions vary widely on the different horizons and depend on the degree of oxidation. Minnesotite, however, is the predominant silicate. The siderite grains were dispersed throughout the ore but were essentially associated with the rock-forming minerals. AN X-ray diffraction pattern for "calcined cold precipitated ferric oxide" is reproduced diagrammatically along with data for other iron oxides by R. C. Mackenzie.1 This pattern, which shows spacings higher than those for any other form of iron oxide, was obtained from material prepared and photographed at several different times over a period of weeks, but later attempts to reproduce the results were unsuccessful the pattern of hematite being obtained every time.2

IN THE preparation of this paper the writer has been influenced by the fact that descriptions of various means of cleaning blast-furnace gas have been published and that further descriptive treatment of the subject will probably be less interesting than a statement of conclusions with regard to preferable methods which have been reached by him as a result, of experience and observation in this country and also as a result of somewhat detailed investigation of the subject made toward the end of the year 1927 on the Continent of Europe and particularly in. Germany. Owing to various circumstances, including a cost of fuel that is extremely high in relation to the wages of labor, the German iron and steel industry has accumulated experience in gas washing which is as yet in part lacking in the United States of America. The paper begins with a statement regarding the economics of the use of blast-furnace gas, then considers the principle's and practices employed in its purification. USES OF BLAST-FURNACE GAS For many reasons having to do with the utilization of coke-oven and blast-furnace gases in steel manufacture and with the use of hot metal, the blast furnace is now usually a part of a steel-producing unit, which also includes coke plant and rolling mill. Therefore both blast-furnace and coke-oven gas are usually applicable to any of the iron and steel-making processes, including the generation of power, and their allocation in any given works should be considered as a single problem. The uses to which blast-furnace gas, either alone or mixed with coke-oven gas may be put, include the following: Regenerative Heating of Air for the Blast Furnace.-This is the oldest and metallurgically the most important of all uses. It is universally performed with unmixed blast-furnace gas and under proper conditions should require not over 23.5 per cent. of the total gas generated for a blast temperature of 1350° F. For Steam-raising Purposes.-This is almost universally done with unmixed blast-furnace gas. From the standpoint of quantity used, it is at the present time the most important application in American steel-works practice.

The practice of introducing acid into oil wells to increase production of oil and gas has been in use since 1894, when it was first used in the Pennsylvania oil fields30.‡ It is only since 1928 that it has been used to any extent in the Mid-Continent18. The process has proved successful in increasing production, at least temporarily, in depleted oil fields where the producing formation is highly calcareous and where water drive is not too pronounced. In the Zwolle field in Louisiana, where the producing horizon is a chalk, increases of 100 per cent have been recorded25. In north-central Texas, where the oil is produced from the Marble Falls limestone, equally pronounced increases have resulted3. The production also in some fields yielding oil from quartz sand cemented with calcitc has been benefited. The evidence of actual increase in total recovery of oil, however, has been questioned by some engineers18. It has been pointed out that the results of the treatment of a well in a now district, where the process has never been tried out, can never be predicted with certainty, since other factors besides percentage of calcareous content of the oil sand play a large part in determining the success of the method. Numerous articles have been published on acid treatment and on the effects of acid on limestone1-35, yet very little has been written concerning experimental work on the actual effect of acid on capillary pores and larger oil-coated voids of oil sands. This is due partly to difficulties in duplicating field conditions in a laboratory and partly to the fact that the process has been carried out largely by contracting companies that have been unwilling to publish details of their results for fear of loss of business to competitors. The authors, using equipment developed to measure the radial permeability of oil-sand cores2', have developed a method of investigating the results of acid treatment which has enabled them to test numerous cores and to study in some detail the action of acid on the different types of rocks, particularly fine-grained rocks.

Dump Truck Kenworth Motor Truck Corp. is beginning full scale production of its new heavy-duty, end-dump earth mover, model 801, a truck engineered for earth moving under the most adverse operating conditions. Payload capacity of the Kenworth earthmover is 30,000 lb and it is over-tired for safety, flotation and high tire life. The truck's body capacity, struck measure, is 9.9 cu yd, with heaped [ ] load at 11.9 cu yd. The earth-mover has a full anti-friction bearing mounted, power assisted steering gear, simplified controls, minimum turning radius and wide axle track to insure ease of handling, maximum maneuverability and high stability. Circle No. 1 Safety Equipment A compact, safe, and efficient valve assembly approved by the United States Bureau of Mines for use with MSA air line respirators, abrasive masks, and abrasive helmets has been developed by Mine Safety Appliances Co. The new MSA continuous air flow control valve regulates air flow from a compressed air source to an operator using respiratory protective air line equipment. Three parts-a centridge container, a cartridge and the air flow check valve-comprise the entire assembly of the control valve. A position action adjustment knob on the cartridge container regulates the amount of air flowing to the operator. The valve can be detached from the air line instantly by pressing the trigger on the cartridge container near the check valve. As the trigger detaches the hose, the spring loaded ball-type valve, which is attached to the end of the hose, automatically stops the flow of air. Circle No. 2

WAR demand- motivated developments in the zinc industry during 1942. Stocks of Prime Western were built up and High-Grade remained tight. The Prince The Prime Western stocks are expected to be cut down and the demand for High-Grade more easily filled as the Depue reflux plant of the New Jersery Zinc Co. increases - production. Subistition of steel for brass in artillery shell cases will have a considerable effect on the zinc situation of the country one estimate of the saving in zinc in 1943 by this substitution being a little under 100,000 ton, of metal. The metal saved will, of course be High-Grade. If the substitution occurs, the present tight situation in High-Grade may be entirely relieved as new production comes on the market and zinc may find itself approaching a situation as comfortable as that of lead provided the supply of zinc-hearing raw materials is sufficient to keep all reduction plants tip to capacity production. The premium price of the per pound of zinc over set quotas which went into effect early in 1942, helped to bring about the new lead-slag-fuming plant and other new sources of raw materials.
