The most common method of identifying hydrocarbon-bearing strata in a well that penetrates many different formations involves measurement and interpretation of the electrical properties of the formations as determined by electrical logs. Even though this method is used extensively, and even though in a great many instances it is capable of indicating presence of oil or gas, situations arise for which it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to deduce the presence of hydrocarbons. These situations may involve the following. 1. A thin formation, bounded by highly resistive formations, in which it is impossible to obtain the actual resistivity of the uninvaded zone with existing logging devices. 2. A formation in which invasion has been so extensive that a value for the uninvaded zone resistivity cannot be obtained. 3. A very shaly formation in which the resistivity index, I, is lower than that usually associated with productive formations. 4. Laminated formations comprised of thin productive sands separated by thin shale streaks in which the individual sand and shale streaks are too thin to permit measurement of uninvaded-zone resistivity with existing logging devices. 5. Productive formations in which the water saturation is high. To extend the utility of electric log interpretation to identification of hydrocarbons in all types of formations, there is strong incentive to find a method not subject to these limitations. Some time ago, in connection with research on the wettability of reservoir rock, an investigation was conducted in which the resistivities of cores were measured shortly after they were removed from a core barrel, and again after they had been extracted and restored to their original oil and brine saturation.' The resistivities after extraction were generally lower. Other tests made on the cores indicated that they were more nearly water wet after they were extracted; thus, it was assumed that the observed changes in resistivities were due to a change in wettability of the cores. Other experiments'," have shown that resistivities of rock samples are sharply dependent on wettability. These experiments have shown that oil-wet samples are more resistive than water-wet samples. To obtain an understanding of how the wetting properties of the surfaces of core material affect electrical resistivity, a series of experiments was conducted. Two groups of core samples were prepared for testing. One group contained brine, but no residual oil. The other group was saturated with brine, flooded with oil to a low water saturation, then flooded with brine to a final residual oil saturation. Resistivity measurements were made on each group. Both groups were then flooded with the original brine to which a chemical had been added that renders sand and clay surfaces preferentially oil wet, a so-called reverse-wetting agent. very little change in resistivity was observed in cores containing only water. The group containing residual oil, however, showed resistivity increases of 100 to 200 per cent. These experiments showed that the resistivity of a core containing oil could be altered by changing wet-tability of the core. Moreover, the possibility was introduced that reverse-wetting agents might be employed as the basis for a logging method for identification of oil-bearing strata. Since behavior of a porous rock containing gas and water might be expected to be similar to that of a rock containing oil and water, such a method should also be applicable to identification of gas-bearing zones. In principle the wettability of the invaded zone could be reversed without altering conductivity of the interstitial water or the hydrocarbon saturation therein. Those strata showing significantly increased invaded-zone resistivities would, therefore, contain hydrocarbons; those with no significant change would be filled only with water. Addition of a reverse-wetting agent to a hydro carbon -bearing zone which is, by nature, already preferentially oil wet would not result in an enhancement of its resistivity. It is generally believed, however, that most hydrocarbon-bearing strata are preferentially water wet.

DURING recent years, tremendous strides have been made in the economical use of coal. This has resulted in, and to some extent has been a result of, making the fuel specifications more and more rigid. For this reason, all producers have found it necessary to improve their preparation materially, both as to sizing and the elimination of impurities, either by more effective preparation underground or at the tipple and cleaning plant, or both. This cause and its effect in all producing fields seem likely to continue for several years-at least. The splendid inherent qualities of the Pocahontas and New River coals are known all over the world, but their good reputation is only partly due to inherent qualities, and to natural conditions which generally favor loading coal comparatively free from impurities; it is due in large measure to the care and skill used, either with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to ship products consistently low in ash. The first coal from the West Virginia smokeless fields was mined and shipped near Quinnimont, on New River, in 1871, while the first shipments from the Pocahontas field were in 1883. The development of both fields progressed rapidly. At first activities followed the main lines of the Chesapeake & Ohio and Norfolk & Western railroads, and were extended later as branch lines were built from these roads. The Virginian R. R., about 1907, opened up the Winding Gulf territory, which has since become a large producer of smokeless coals from the Pocahontas and the New River measures.

At the Hanna No. 4-A mine of The Union Pacific Coal Co. a new system of trackless mining is being utilized to extract a 26-ft coal seam. By using shuttle cars and a conveyor belt for haulage in the rooms and panel entries instead of pit cars and panel hoist a saving of 12 cents per ton is expected. Mining is conducted in a 26-ft coal seam laid down on a synclinal structure with active workings on a pitch of approximately ten to twelve degrees. The coal seam is interbedded between a shale bottom and sand- stone top. The coal is friable, high in moisture, and subject to spontaneous combustion. The mine is rated gassy by the State Coal Mine Inspection Department. Mining is conducted at the present time by unbalanced rope haulage an main slopes spaced on approximate 4300-ft centers with the three-entry system driven to boundary lines, strike entries being turned on approximate 1300-ft centers. Panels are driven to the rise between entries at approximately 750-ft intervals with panel rooms driven on the strike 500 to 600 ft long, leaving 150 ft of barrier pillar between each block of panel rooms.

Nason thinks I could not have studied Mr. Witherbee's paper and doubts the arithmetic used, but in his discussion arrives at practically the same conclusion. He says 10 ft. thickness of ore over a square mile should give 27,878,400 tons, allowing 10 cu. ft. per ton of ore. This is correct, but if he reads carefully he will see that this depth of ore was figured as covering one-tenth of the surface, which reduces the figures to those used by Mr. Nason. I did not say, however, that there were 2,300,000,000 tons of ore in New Jersey, but that applying the same method of computation as used by Mr. Nason, to the area of the iron ore-bearing gneisses in New Jersey, we would get a total of 2,300,000,000. I did say, "In this area are located 366 magnetite mines that have been worked more or less. These lenses may easily be capable of producing (on an average) 1,000,000 tons each, and there are probably double the number listed not opened up." Thus my estimate for New Jersey, as far as any was made, would be: Probable ore 366,000,000 Possible ore in addition 732,000,000 1,098,000,000 Mr. Nason's final conclusion of his personal estimate was one-half of what he erroneously read to be the estimate given in the paper, or half of 2,300,000,000, which equals 1,150,000,000. So the two estimates seem to differ less than 5 per cent., and we have the two sister States of New York and New Jersey on an equal footing of productive possibilities in magnetic ore.

Iraq, formerly called Mesopotamia in Asiatic Turkey, became a kingdom under British Mandate after the world war and is expected to gain its independence in 1932 when it enters the League of Nations. The kingdom is shown on Fig. 1 in its relations to neighboring countries, to the Mediterranean Sea and to the Persian Gulf. It is slightly smaller than the State of Texas with its capitol, Baghdad, inland about as far from the Persian Gulf as Breckinridge, Tex., is from the Houston Shipping Channel. The oil fields lie 180 to 225 miles north of Baghdad, or about as far as from Breckinridge to Oklahoma City, and about as far from the Mediterranean as Fort Worth is from Hobbs, N. M. A narrow-gage railway runs from Basra, the Persian Gulf port, to Baghdad. From there another narrow-gage runs into the Kurdish hills east of the Tigris to Kirkuk. A standard-gage, part of the old Berlin-Baghdad system, follows the west bank of the Tigris northward from Baghdad to Baiji, a village about 100 miles south of Mosul. No railway exists between Iraq and the Mediterranean, though the Anatolian Railways in southern Turkey come to within 50 miles of the Iraq frontier and 120 miles of Mosul. Surveys have been completed for a railway through British Mandates from Haifa to Baghdad as well as for a railway through French Mandated Syria from Tripoli to Abu Kemal near the Iraq border. Wagon roads, excepting those constructed by the oil companies, are few and indifferent in Iraq and no road exists across the desert to the Mediterranean, but contrary to prevalent beliefs the surface is firm and free from sand dunes so that motor cars can go almost anywhere in dry weather, with ease. Frequent motor car and airplane service exists between Baghdad and the Mediterranean ports and motor car service may be had between Kirkuk and Nisibin, Turkey, where on two days each week through Wagons Lits service is available to Paris. Baghdad is about 21 days distant from New York City with present transport facilities. Unmined blocks in the Sewickley seam, surrounded by worked out areas, have been found to transmit overburden oads through the interval strata to the Pittsburgh seam workings 90 ft below. Operating experiences under these conditions are described in this paper. IT has always been understood, in northern West Virginia where both the Pittsburgh and Sewickley seams are mined, that pillaring or splitting in the lower Pittsburgh seam could break the interval strata and make mining in the overlying Sewickley difficult or impossible. In some instances, however, mining methods practiced in the overlying Sewickley have reversed the problem, resulting in a shifting of the intermediate layer and destroying valuable acreages of the Pittsburgh seam below. The Pittsburgh seam in this area is, on the average, 102 in. thick. About 18 in. of low-quality head coal are left for roof protection as it is mined. Immediately over the coal are two draw slates, two rider seams, and a good hard black shale, locally called black rock, which serves as a permanent roof where draw slates and riders are taken down on certain main haulroads. In most areas mined in this seam in the past the bottom has been satisfactory but soft. However, in areas now being mined by the Christopher Coal Co. in Monongalia County the bottom is very hard and unyielding. The Sewickley seam, lying 85 ft above the Pittsburgh, will average nearly 70 in. in thickness and is overlain by massive shales and sandstones. Much of the seam is mined only down to the "sheep skin," a hard band about 4 in. above the bottom, which is composed of relatively hard shale. Fig. 1 shows a typical cross-section through the Pittsburgh and Sewickley seams in the area being discussed. The thin Redstone seam is not deep-mined but is stripped in some locations where it outcrops. Most of the Sewickley seam in the Morgantown areas has been mined out from 10 to 30 years. There are at present only two large mines and five or six others of small production operating in that seam. Mining systems in the past were generally of the room and pillar type with some full pillar extraction. This seam in the Scott's Run area was operated by as many as thirty or forty different companies at one time, during an era beset with strikes, market failures, and depressions. Most of the barrier pillars along the many main haulroads were abandoned, and blocks of Sewickley coal that would be fully recovered with today's machinery were left unmined when conditions became anything less than favorable. Consequently the mined-out Sewickley is spotted throughout with solid blocks varying in size from 100x100 ft to 200x400 ft and larger. It is these unmined Sewickley blocks surrounded by worked-out portions that have caused transmissions of roof stresses to underlying Pittsburgh mining areas, see Fig. 2, resulting in untold difficulty. As the Christopher Coal Co. operates both the Pittsburgh and Sewickley seams, accurate maps of workings in both seams are readily available and are regularly consulted. The first Pittsburgh squeeze attributed to overlying Sewickley blocks occurred in the Arkwright mine, where a shuttle car crew was developing a section consisting of seven panel headings. Sintering may be defined as the process by which powders bond themselves into coherent bodies, usually, although not necessarily, under the influence of pressure and elevated temperature. For the sake of clarity and simplicity, the present survey will exclude from consideration the sintering of mixed or alloyed powders, with attendant complications, but at the risk of overlooking information of general applicability. Sintering in the presence of a liquid phase is thus automatically eliminated. The sintering of alloys involves much additional subject matter and deserves separate consideration. Since the literature of the subject is extensive and widely scattered, it will not be feasible to consider the contributions individually. Instead, the subject matter will be classified according to experimental observations and theory, and will be presented in summary form. It should be noted that the appended list of references does not constitute a complete bibliography; it includes only those works quoted below. More extensive bibliographies are included in several of the references; see particularly references 7, 9, 28, 34, 38, 50, 52, 54, a "Bibliography on Powder Metallurgy" published by the Library of Congress and a pamphlet published by the Metals Disintegrating Co. entitled "The Field of Powder Metallurgy and Bibliography." 11. Summary of Experimental Observations The following classified list is composed of general statements of established fact derived from the experimental results reported in the published literature. One of the first all-hydraulic crawler drills in service at a US open-pit mine has significantly exceeded the penetration rates of comparable pneumatic crawler rigs, according to Atlas Copco Inc. Overall production with the hydraulic unit has been double that of pneumatic crawlers in use. The installation is at the Foote Mineral Co. surface mine at Kings Mountain, N.C., where the company is engaged in mining spodumene, a combination of lithium, aluminum, and silicates. The ore is found in pegmatite dikes, a tough and abrasive host rock with compressive strength of tip to 5800 kPa (40,000 psi).

A preliminary investigation of the collecting effects of various fatty acids in tall oil has led to a conclusion that the collecting power of fatty acids used in flotation increases with increasing un- saturation of the hydrocarbon chain. Linoleic acid was found to be an excellent collector for oxide minerals. TALL oil is a mixture of fatty and resin acids extracted as byproducts in the sulphate pulp industry. In the field of flotation a well-known example of this type of product is Reagent No. 708 of the American Cyanamid Co. Its successful use as a flotation collector with many nonsulphide minerals has been described by Falconer and Crawford.' The composition of crude tall oil varies within wide limits.' " By a number of methods the crude oil may be refined to produce a variety of refined products. This investigation presents a preliminary comparative study of collecting properties of the fatty acids in tall oil. In Finnish tall oils these constituents are primarily palmitic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids.:' The first is a saturated fatty acid having 15 carbon atoms in its hydrocarbon chain, plus one in the carboxyl group. The others have 17-carbon-atom chains and are unsaturated. It is of particular interest to note that palmitic, oleic, lino-leic, and linolenic acids represent increasing degrees of unsaturation with 0, 1, 2, and 3 double bonds, respectively. To test the collecting properties of the four fatty acids separately, the vacuum flotation technique described by Schuhmann and Prakash4 was used. By this method the boundary between flotation and non-flotation conditions was approximately delineated, with the use of ilmenite and several other minerals. Collector concentration and pH were the principal variables. On the basis of information obtained, actual flotation tests were run on an ilmenite-bear-ing ore in a laboratory flotation cell. Through the courtesy of P. Kajanne from the Department of Chemistry, Finland Institute of Technology, the following reagents were obtained for this investigation: 1—Palmitic acid, of Judex, had a purity of 95 pct as determined by parallel iodo-metric and spectrophotometric measurements. 2— Oleic acid, product of May and Baker Ltd., indicated purity of 98 pct. By iodometric and spectrophoto-metric determinations the oleic acid content was found to be 83.8 pct. In addition, it contained 6 pct linoleic, 1 pct linolenic, and 9.2 pct saturated fatty acids.' 3—Linoleic acid was prepared from soybean oil by low-temperature crystallization. Recent literature shows that pronounced increases in oil recovery can result from the use of miscible systems in recovery operations. This literature also points out certain problems associated with maintaining miscibility, e.g., compositional changes resulting from alterations in pressure and temperature or from zone dilution. The purpose of the work described in this paper was to study miscible zones for possible use in waterflooding operations and examine the manner in which these zones break down. The fluid system selected for study was oil—terNary-butyl alcohol—water, which, because of its narrow range of miscibility, is ideally suited for investigation in short, linear systems. The laboratory-observed effects on oil recovery and zone stability of a number of variables are reported. Among the variables investigated were miscible zone size, viscosity ratio, length of travel, and interstitial water saturation. Results obtained with this system show that interstitial water adversely affects recoveries because of premature phase break. Salinity of the water further aggravates Ais situation. This effect, although pronounced for this system, would probably occur in any fluid system containing an alcohol. As expected, viscosity ratio has a decided influence on recovery efficiency and zone stability. The results also show that use of a suficieno zone size, even though the system has poor phase characteristics, yields higher oil recoveries than are obtained from straight water floods. Length-of-travel studies showed a square root relationship between zone growth and path length for favorable viscosity ratios. No such clear-cut dependence was observed under unfavorable viscosity conditions. INTRODUCTION As new oil reserves have become increasingly more difficult and expensive to find and develop, the oil industry has devoted more and more time and money to finding more efficient methods for exploiting known reserves. The increasing number of water floods is one manifestation of this attempt to improve oil recoveries from existing fields. Since considerable quantities of oil are by-passed by the waterflood process, it is only a partial answer to the problem. The search continues. Of late, several proposed processes have received the critical attention of investigators. Among them are gas drives, in situ thermal reactions and miscible displacements. The present paper is concerned with miscible displacements in conjunction with water floods. Recent literature1- reports that, under proper conditions, oil recoveries from LPG floods, propane sweeps, condensing gas drives, etc., approach 100 per cent of the oil in place in the region contacted by the flood. This literature also points out some of the problems associated with these processes, one of the main ones being the maintaining of miscibility. Compositional changes resulting from pressure and temperature variations or from zone dilution give rise to phase breaks and loss of miscibility, the conclusion being that, after loss of miscibility, much of the beneficial influence of the zone is lost.' The results of the subject work show that, if sufficient zone material exists ahead of a phase interface, considerable improvement in oil recovery can be obtained. In order to increase our understanding of the behavior of miscible systems as they degenerate into immiscible processes, a laboratory system having rapid deterioration characteristics was needed. The fluid system oil—ter tiary-butyl alcohol (TBA)—water possesses these properties and was the system investigated. Although these fluids are different from those generally employed in miscible studies, an understanding of their behavior can be applied to other miscible slug processes. However, under conditions where mass transfer maintains a miscible system through multiple contacts, e.g., enriched gas drive or high pressure gas drive, the observed behavior of alcohol zones would not be applicable. The variables of interest were zone size, viscosity ratio, length of travel, initial water saturation, rate and core characteristics. Of these, only the effects of the following on zone breakdown and oil recovery are reported in detail: (1) zone size, (2) path length, and (3) initial water saturation. The effects of viscosity ratio and core characteristics are discussed in conjunction with other variables. Although initial water saturation is not envisioned as important to the phase behavior of hydrocarbon systems, e.g., LPG, it is important in alcohol systems. Material quenched from temperatures approximately 40°C below the transus has high tensile ductility, and this ductility is insensitive to aging at 500°C or to irradiation. If, however, the material is quenched from temperatures above the transus it becomes highly susceptible to loss of ductility either from aging at 500 or from irradiation. Inter granular failure is characteristic of the materials having low ductility. The distribution of the equilibrium phase is found to control the susceptibility to embrittlement by restricting 6 grain growth during heat treatment and thus influencing crack propagation. IN zirconium, as in titanium, -stabilizing alloy additions are used to obtain high strengths via quench and age heat treatments, and the Zr-2.5 pct Nb alloy has been developed1 because of its strength advantage over the Zircaloys. Early in the development of the Zr-2.5 pct Nb alloy the problem of 13 embrittlement was appreciated, and for this reason the solution temperature was chosen below the p transus.' In the course of irradiation studies on quenched and aged Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb alloy it was found' that irradiation introduced an important aspect of p embrittlement, riz., material quenched from the phase and aged 24 hr at 500°C was severely embrittled by moderate doses of neutron irradiation. This effect had not been studied in titanium alloys. In titanium the metallurgical features leading to 0 ernbrittlement were found to be structures with: a) coarse a platelets at the grain bondaries, b) finely dispersed a uniformly distributed throughout the (0) matrix,6 c) Widmanstatten a-13 with more than 50 pct P, d) the presence of some metastable p transformation products,3 and e) large prior -phase grain size.5 Alternatively, the presence of a uniform distribution of coarse a was conducive to high ductility and a structure largely of equiaxed a was very dctile. The detailed mechanisms of the embrittlement have not been worked out for all of these conditions, although weakness at either a-matrix boundaries or prior p grain boundaries have been prominent in the eculation. It was proposed that acicular a might act as a mild notch, and low ductility has been associated with easy fracture along its boundary.' There have been two opposing suggestions for the source of the high ductility associated with equiaxed a phase. JaffeeB proposed that this a would accept a large por- tion of the oxygen, thus increasing the ductility of the matrix, whereas after study of a Zr-Nb-Cu alloy Weinstein and oltz proposed that the a phase, softer than the martensitic matrix, acted to blunt cracks formed in the matrix. In the present work we have studied the effect of neutron irradiation on the ductility, particularly the P embrittlement, of the Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb alloy. By a variation of solution temperature and aging time a variety of metallurgical conditions have been examined, and a range of resultant ductilities obtained. The ductility has been related to the material microstructure and mode of fracture. EXPERIMENTAL The alloy used in the present work came from two separate ingots fabricated into rod of 3/8 or i in. diam, Table I. For both batches the P transus temperature was approximately 890° C. Most of the heat treatments were done directly on lengths of the j} in. diam rod, after which the tensile test specimens were machined. Quenching was achieved by dropping rods from a dynamic vacuum into water, the cooling rate estimated to be 2 100°C per sec. For aging the rods were encapsulated in evacuated silica tubes. Round tensile test specimens, with gage diam and length 0.160 and 1.0 in., respectively, were used throughout and pulled at room temperature or 300°C on Instron tensile machines, at a crosshead speed of 0.05 ipm. Specimens were irradiated in the NRX and NRU reactors, in facilities described in previous publications.'0 The metallurgical conditions examined have been: All tensile test specimens were machined with axes in the axial direction of the swaged rod. THE Missouri fire clays are here divided into plastic and semiplastic clays occurring as widespread bedded deposits in east central Missouri and flint and diaspore clays occurring as isolated "sink-hole" deposits in the north central Ozark region. Visual inspection was the first method used in clay prospecting. Thin overburden, hard sandstone "rimrocks," and the occurrence of diaspore float made this method particularly applicable in the flint and diaspore fields. The first drilling tool used was a hand auger. One man can drill 25 to 50 ft. per day at a cost of about 35 cents per foot. Holes can be drilled to a depth of 150 feet. Spud drills are often used where the over burden is hard. This drill uses a slotted earth socket bit. A two-man crew can drill about 100 ft. per day at a cost of about 35 cents per foot. Mechanically powered auger drills have been used extensively in wildcat drilling in the past few years. This type of drill furnishes a continuous set of cuttings. The practical depth limit with this drill is 50 to 60 ft. Two men can drill 300 ft. per day at a cost of about 20 cents per foot. Core drilling is used mainly to prove a known clay deposit. A two-man crew with a No. 22 Sullivan drill can drill about 30 to 40 ft. per day in soft clay, at a cost of about $1.25 per foot.

The effects of various antifreeze agents on the formation of hydrogen sulphide hydrate have been studied. On a molar basis the relative lowering of Tm (the maximum temperature at which solid hydrogen sulphide hydrate can exist in equilibrium with the given solution) for the various agents is: sodium chloride 1.00, calcium chloride 1.71, methyl alcohol 0.57, ethyl alcohol 0.68, ethylene glycol 0.73, diethylene glycol 0.73, sucrose 0.87, dextrose 0.71. On a weight basis the relative lowering of TM is: sodium chloride 1.00, calcium chloride 0.91, methyl alcohol 1.08, ethyl alcohol 0.89, ethylene glycol 0.69, diethylene glycol 0.41, dextrose 0.23, and sucrose 0.15. Introduction The solid hydrate of hydrogen sulphide, H2S.6H20,1 is in equilibrium with water and liquid hydrogen sulphide at 85°F at a partial pressure of hydrogen sulphide approximately equal to the vapor pressure Of hydrogen sulphide at that temperature. At temperatures below 85°F, in the presence Of excess hydrogen sulphide (greater than the amount required to react with the water present) the hydrate is in equilibrium with liquid hydrogen sulphide at approximately the vapor pressure Of hydrogen sulphide. In the presence of excess water, the solid hydrate is in equilibrium with liquid water, containing dissolved hydrogen sulphide, at a pressure lower than the vapor pressure of liquid hydrogen sulphide at the same temperat~re.2 The lower the temperature, the greater the difference between the decomposition pressure of the hydrate and the vapor pressure of liquid hydrogen sulphide at that temperature. Conditions conducive to the formation of solid hydrogen sulphide hydrate may exist in wells producing a gas containing a high percentage of hydrogen sulphide under high pressure, or in the lead lines from such wells. This paper gives the results of tests made with various antifreeze agents which might be useful in decomposing the hydrate or in preventing the formation of the hydrate of hydrogen sulphide Apparatus Fig , shows a diagram of the apparatus used. The sample under observation was contained in a glass tube 34 cm long, having a 6 mm id and a wall thickness of 2.5 mm. The lower end of this tube was closed- with a plug of butyl rubber. The upper end of the tube was connected to a diaphragm gauge, with a stainless steel diaphragm, a manometer, a vacuum pump, and a cylinder of hydrogen sulphide, The tube was held nearly horizontal, with the liquid resting along the lower side of the tube. It was found that when the tube was held in a vertical position, it broke with ex. plosive violence as soon as it became filled with solid hydrate. Presumably this was caused by the expansion which occurred on solidification of the hydrate. The difficulty disappeared when the tube was held in an inclined position during the tests.

IN an ideal mill, with perfect milling operations, the mineral extraction would be 100 per cent, the, concentrate would be 100 per cent mineral, the tailing would assay zer.0 mineral and the milling cost would be zero dollars. Such an operation can, of course, never be attained. We can only strive to approach it as nearly as possible and in doing so most recognize .the fact that the three primary factors in milling: assay of concentrate, assay of tailing, and cost of operation bear a definite economic relationship to each other. This relation will change from time to time and will be different for different mills, depending on milling equipment, character and quality of feed, market conditions, and other factors. It is granted that for a given operation there is an economic point, but the location of this point is difficult. It is for the purpose of making some of these economic points a little more tangible that this paper has been prepared.

ALTHOUGH brasses and bronzes have been made for ages, a systematic study of their physical properties has been carried out only during the years of the present century. Among these properties may be included those which are to be detected by means of microscopic examination; in other words by the science of metallography. The earlier workers in this field, both in this country and abroad, gave their attention to steel. When the senior author explored the situation in 1902, there was little encouragement to be found in undertaking the study of the non-ferrous alloys. A start was made, and the metallography of the brasses and bronzes, as well as of the copper-nickel- zinc alloys developed materially under his direction. Annealing experiments were begun in 1902, and in the succeeding years the effect of temperature, and the influence of previous working, on the grain size of brass were studied. The conclusions so well known and widely published today were largely reached during those earlier years. In 1905 the first complete annealing series were made. By this it is meant that brass and copper sheet, 5 B & S Nos. hard, was machined into tensile test specimens, then annealed under accurate control for 30 min. at temperatures up to the melting point of the material. Various determinations were made, including tensile strength and elongation in 2 in. There rapidly followed similar series on all of the copper-zinc alloys from 100 to 60 per cent. copper, on the bronzes, cupronickels, and on copper-zinc-nickel alloys. At this point there was published by Grard, in October, 1909,1 the very comprehensive and complete work on the tensile properties of cartridge brass, 90-10 copper-zinc, and electrolytic copper. The excellent photomicrographs in that paper illustrated the changes in structure produced by cold rolling as well as by annealing at different temperatures, but where Grard's work was confined to copper and to two alloys, the investigations in this laboratory have been over the entire fields of the commercial copper-zinc alloys, copper-tin alloys, representative copper-nickel and copper-nickel-zinc alloys as well as aluminum bronzes and others of a more special nature.

SOME time ago,, a prominent engineer asked a representative of the firebrick industry to prepare a comprehensive paper on blast-furnace refractories. It was to have been the purpose of this paper to gather practical experiences from widely different sources, in the hope of determining what kind or kinds of firebrick were best adapted for certain uses. This engineer sent questionnaires to the large consumers of blast-furnace linings and stovebrick and received very detailed replies as to their experiences. These replies are conflicting, but, having been turned over to the writer, form the basis of this attempt to meet the request. Because of the impossibility of making final recommendations at this time, a few of the more interesting and commonly known methods of studying refractories are also discussed, as well as the more recent developments in this field. The first reply to, the questionnaire stated that good service was being secured from the linings. This satisfactory condition was attributed to the use of a very good distributor. The writer believed that manufacturers try to and do produce a good product and that the proper handling of equipment is of the utmost importance, if good results are to be secured. The type of bricks used was not mentioned. The second reply stated that good life was secured from the furnace linings, but that the writer had had soft-fired stovebrick crumble and, for that reason, preferred a hard-fired product for use in this position. The type of bricks used was not mentioned. The third reply stated that firebrick had crumbled from the mantle up; the cause was not known. The fourth reply stated that the stove linings were satisfactory. Hand-made furnace linings failed after 4 years' service so a steam-pressed lining was installed which was still good after 4 years of service. Consequently, a second steam-pressed lining was installed but this disintegrated at the top after the furnace had been in- blast 7 months. The firebrick manufacturer attributed this failure to the expansion of iron blocks that had been installed at the stock line to prevent erosion.

The Gabbs magnesite-brucite deposit is unique in size and is one of two magnesite deposits being exploited in the United States. It is near the town of Gabbs, which is one hundred miles southeast of Reno, in west-central Nevada. The brucite was discovered in 1927; the magnesite was found while exploring the brucite. During World War II, more than 80,000 tons of magnesium metal was produced from about 900,000 tons of magnesite ore mined from these deposits. An additional 5,000,000 tons of magnesite and 1,000,000 tons of brucite have been produced for use in making magnesia refractories and chemicals. Basic Inc., presently the only producer, mines 1.5 ± 0.25 million tons of ore and waste annually using high-selective open-pit rriethods; the ore is up-graded, calcined, and processed into a variety of products. Known reserves of highgrade (less than 5 per cent CaO) magnesite ore total more than 25,000,000 tons, and there are larger tonnages of lower-grade material; brucite reserves are small. The magnesite and brucite are in generally west-dipping dolomite of the upper member of the late Triassic Luning Formation, in the over-riding plate of the Paradise thrust fault. A great variety of dikes and a stock of Cretaceous granodiorite intrude the Luning Formation in the vicinity of the magnesite-brucite deposit. The magnesite bodies are scattered over an area of about a square mile around a prong of granodiorite which extends north from the stock. The brucite is mainly in two bodies in contact with the prong of granodiorite; at the surface and along deeper cracks the brucite has weathered to hydromagnesite and artinite. In the area of magnesite-brucite mineralization, much of the dark, fine-grained, schistose, regionally-metamorphosed dolomite of the Luning Formation has been marmorized to a lighter-colored, coarser-grained, massive dolomite that is intergrown in varying proportions with the magnesite. The magnesite and marmorized dolomite can not be distinguished visually. In addition to the two varieties of dolomite, the gangue in the magnesite and brucite bodies mainly is the various varieties of dike rock, serpentine and a variety of other "contact" minerals, and "post-ore" dolomite and calcite. The magnesite ( and recrystallized dolomite) is believed to have formed by the hydrothermal replacement of the regionally metamorphosed sedimentary dolomite; alternatively it has been suggested that the magnesite is sedimentarv and formed contemporaneously with the dolomite in an embayment of the Triassic sea. Because all the igneous rocks exposed in the immediate vicinity of the magnesite deposits appear to be younger than the magnesite, the ore-forming solutions are thought to be related to a somewhat older granite which crops out elsewhere in the area. The brucite is the result of contact-metasomatic replacement of magnesite during the emplacement of the granodiorite stock.
