The small-angle dislocation-boundary density of nickel and some of its alloys was investigated as a function of strength. It was found that the strength is a linear function of the density for pure nickel and for Ni-Ti alloys, but not for Ni-Co alloys. The results are interpreted in terms of dislocation theory. THE processes by which metals deform are still poorly understood, even though there has been a concentrated research effort in this field during the past fifteen years. Single crystals and individual grains in polycrystalline aggregates often develop a subgrain structure when deformed. Substructure formation occurs as a result of local plastic bending and its development is augmented by annealing at moderate temperatures.' Investigations made to date, largely qualitative in nature, have shown that the substructure is composed of a network of small-angle boundaries. The purpose of the present paper is to present some quantitative data on substructure (obtained by X-ray techniques) and to correlate the results with the strength of the metal in which the substructure existed. Nickel and some of its alloys were used for the experiments. The presence of certain kinds of foreign atoms greatly alters the formation and effect of the substructure. Polycrystalline tensile specimens were prepared from high purity nickel, two Ni-Ti alloys, and two Ni-Co alloys; the composition of these materials is given in Table I. Tensile specimens having a reduced section 1/4 in. diam by 3 in. long were machined from materials which were refined, cast, forged, and swaged in the authors' laboratories. The specimens were annealed for 1/2 hr at 1150°C, a treatment which produced grains having a diameter of approximately 0.5 mm. This rather large grain size was used to facilitate later examination of the substructure. Duplicate specimens of pure nickel and of each alloy were strained various controlled amounts in tension at room temperature and recovered for 1 hr at 800°C. (This strain induced prior to recovery will be referred to hereafter as the "prestrain.") One of each of the recovered specimens was pulled in tension at room temperature to obtain the stress-strain curves. The other bar was cross-sectioned in the gage length, carefully polished, and deeply etched to remove all cold-worked material. This specimen was then examined by the X-ray microscopic technique2 to determine the nature and magnitude of the substructure. The use of duplicate specimens permitted a direct correlation between tensile properties and substructure characteristics. X-ray microscopic studies were made with an apparatus constructed to have an average resolving power of about 4 microns. The monochromatic radiation reflected from grains which were oriented favorably was recorded on fine-grain photographic plates. These were examined at Xl00 which represents the true magnification, since there was essentially none in the X-ray system. This permitted detection of angular differences between subgrains of as little as 10 min. A very large number (over 100) of grains for each specimen was examined at this magnification and the number of substructure boundaries per grain was tabulated. An accurate relative measure was obtained under fixed experimental conditions, e.g., same grain size, resolving power, magnification, etc. The greatest source of error lay in counting the subboundaries, but this proved to be surprisingly small when repeated counts were made by different investigators. Furthermore, as the subsequent analysis indicates, whatever human error was introduced was not significant. Analysis of the Substructure Data When the number of substructure boundaries per grain was plotted against the frequency, skew (asymmetrical) distribution curves of the type shown in Fig. 1 were obtained. These are smoothed curves for the 1 atomic pct Ti in nickel alloy subjected to various prestrains and are representative of the curves obtained with all the metals. Abstract-The sharp drop in world phosphate demand that took place in 1975, due to temporarily high prices, now seems to be reversing itself. And prices for both phosphate rock and phosphate fertilizers, which declined dramatically from their 1975 highs, now appear to be bottoming out. This recent price weakness has delayed new mining ventures that had previously been planned for completion by around 1980. While there is ample capacity to supply near-term rock needs, the stage seems to be emerging for a better supply-demand and price environment in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

The Hallimond tube flotation of sphalerite and pyrite with sulfhydryl collectors has been found to be inhibited near neutral pH in the presence of copper salts. Alkalimetric titration studies of the reactions between collector and activator indicate that this effect is apparently related to the formation of basic copper collector complexes. The conditions of formation of these compounds and their stability are in good agreement with the depression observed in flotation experiments. The general procedure employed in the flotation of zinc sulfide minerals requires activation of the mineral surface by heavy metal ions, usually copper, which react more easily than zinc with the common short-chain ionic sulfhydryl collectors.' Commercially, zinc flotation is carried out under alkaline conditions (pH 7 to 10.5), but small-scale experiments indicate that zinc sulfide minerals can also be activated and collected under acid conditions. Selectivity, however, becomes poor at low pH and undesirable materials such as pyrite, silicates and carbonates tend to report in the float. Several years ago, Wark and Sutherland~, measured the contact angles of air bubbles on copper-activated sphalerite immersed in various sulfhydryl collector solutions. I. INTRODUCTION. LIME-ROASTING is a term proposed by Ingalls 1 for the operation of forcing air under pressure through a mixture of galena and lime at the kindling-temperature with the object of oxidizing lead and sulphur and of fritting or fusing the charge. If, finely-divided galena were treated in this manner without the addition of lime, the heat set free by the oxidation of part of the lead and the sulphur would be sufficiently great to fuse undecomposed sulphide, and thus stop desulphurization. Besides the chemical action that the addition of lime, limestone or gypsum to the charge may have, the admixture has the physical effect that it keeps the particles of galena separated from one another and accessible to the oxidizing effect of the air. At present, three methods of lime-roasting are carried out on a working-scale, the Huntington-Heberlein, the Carmichael-Bradford and the Savelsberg2 processes. In the last, which interests us here, an 8-ton charge is made up of galena, limestone and perhaps some siliceous or ferruginous flux; the whole is crushed to pass a screen with 3-mm. holes and moistened with 5 per cent of water. It is fed gradually into a bowl-shaped converter, 6.56 ft. in diameter, supported by trunnions attached to a truck. On the .bottom the converter has a grate with blast-inlet beneath. Earlier work revealed that small amounts of silver (< 0,l at. pct) may exert a marked effect on the structure and aging characteristics of certain a1loys based on the Al-Zn-Mg system. Silver additions have now been made to other age-hardening aluminum alloys, and significant effects have been observed in the Al-Mg system and in several Al-Cu-Mg and Al-Mg-Si alloys. Similarities exist between the behavior of alloys from all four systems, notably that in each case silver stimulates nucleation of an intermediate precipitate which forms when the alloys are aged in the medium temperature range (-120" to 220°C). The mechanism for this effect is uncer- IT has been shown that small additions of silver (<0.1 at. pct) may have a marked effect on the structure and age-hardening characteristics of tain although it is suggested it originates in a preferred affinity between magnesium and silver atoms. There is evidence to indicate that the effects of silver are unique to that element. It is suggested that silver atoms interact with vacancies during low-temperature aging of Al-4 pct Cu and certain Al-Cu-Mg alloys. Silver had little effect on Al-8 pct Zn aged at any temperature. Preliminary observations indicate that silver may have interesting effects on the strength properties of Al-Mg alloys, md a the commercial Al-Cu-Mg alloys designated as 2024 and 2618. many alloys based on the Al-Zn-Mg* system.1"&apos;*

With the postwar emergency for new housing and for new industrial buildings, much research has been done on lightweight aggregates for use in concrete and plaster. The trend toward lighter weight aggregates to relieve the dead load on the higher, steel frame- work buildings started toward the end of the last century. Progressively the requirements be- came more stringent, crushed bank slag, weighing 80 lb per cu ft as com- pared to 100 lb for crushed rock, was supplemented in some sections by foamed slags and expanded shales weighing from 40 to 60 lb per cu ft. In other sections cinders were used weighing from 40 to 50 lb, including sand. Sections favored with more recent vulcanism turned to pumice weighing from 30 to 60 lb, whereas other localities made use of diatomite, from 28 to 40 lb. Exfoliated vermiculite weighing from only 6 to 10 lb per cu ft came into use. As the search for lighter weights in aggregates continued so did the search for other desirable properties such as nailability, ease of cutting or channeling, and good insulation to both sound and heat. This search eventually led to a widespread interest in the expansion of perlite, or similar volcanic glasses, with the result that in 1946, the Office of the Housing Expediter&apos; listed eleven firms reporting the operation of processing plants either on pilot or commercial scale producing aggregates weighing from 2 to 16 lb per cu ft.

The data here given were obtained by 1500 tests made by the United Verde Copper Co. to determine the most economical air pressure for the operation of hammer drills under the varying conditions of use, and to investigate the variation in drilling speed at different air pressures. Twelve models of drills were used at gage pressures ranging from 40 to 130 Ib. No effort was made to harmonize theory and practice; but rather to formulate empiric rules that would cover the average variation of the results obtained. These rules on the performance of hammer drills, based on the air pressure as the main variable, however, are not necessarily of universal application, but they apparently satisfy the results obtained in this series of tests. The drilling conditions at this property vary widely; an average of twenty-one machine shifts to a 3-ft. (0.9-m.) round has been found necessary in some of the development work, while an advance of 56 ft. has been made in seven shifts in the "oxide" ground. This range precludes the adoption of one type of drill as a standard; consequently almost every kind of hammer drill sold in this country has been tested. At present, sixteen models are in use, of which two types of the heavy (150 to 160 lb.) mounted drills, one of the light mounted drill, one stoper, and two hand plugging drills are considered as standard. Method of Conducting Tests All machines were of the wet type, and were selected as being representative of the several types in use at this property; all had been in use from two to four months except the Waugh 66 and the Sullivan DX61, which were new. All machines were thoroughly overhauled before they were sent to the testing ground. MAINTENANCE of membership by the technical so¬cieties and the activity of these societies in spite of the adverse business situation have been noteworthy. This forcibly brings home the fact that industry recognizes that sound technical guidance is well worth its cost. The numerous difficulties and losses due to defects of various kinds arising from gas-metal reactions are now generally recognized and interest in these problems is widespread. The forthcoming A. I. M. E. round-table discussion of gas-metal problems will do much to clarify the situation and will permit us to assay our present knowledge and to suggest the proper direction for profitable future research. "The Age Hardening of Metal" was the title of the annual I. M. D. lecture delivered by Dr. Paul D. Merica. A critical review of the known facts relating to age-hardening phenomena was first given, followed by the presentation of a theory correlating the detailed observations which have been made regarding the mechanism of the hardening.

The production of oil and gas in Arkansas is confined to two distinct and widely separated regions of the state; namely: (1) South Arkansas in the Gulf coastal plain, where 49 fields-many containing two or more reservoirs or pools-yield oil, condensate and gas from beds in the Cretaceous and Jurassic, and (2) Northwest Arkansas, a part of the Arkansas Valley, where only dry gas is produced in 21 fields from sandstones of Pennsylvanian age. Exploration during the year 1945 centered largely in these two producing regions, but some of the geophysical surveys were made and wildcat drilling was done a considerable distance outside these regions.

Results of a primary stress measurement investigation conducted on the 1100 copper ore body of the Mt. Isa mine, Mt. Isa, Queens., Australia, are presented in this chapter. The investigation started in September 1965, after discussion with the engineering staff at Mt. Isa, and consisted of both underground or in-situ tests at Mt. Isa and laboratory tests on Mt. Isa rocks and stress measurement techniques at the Australian National University in Canberra. Underground stress measurements were made in and adjacent to the 1100 copper ore body. The primary stress measurement site was in J 32 west crosscut on 14 Level. Approximate coordinates on the mine grid are 3000 north, 1650 east. The vertical depth below ground surface at this point is approximately 2180 ft. Some preliminary measurements were made in M 30 west crosscut on 13 Level, coordinates 3000 north, 2000 east, depth beneath the surface approximately 1990 ft. Additional flatjacks were installed on 11 Level in L 30 west crosscut, coordinates 3000 north, 2200 east, and depth beneath the surface approximately 1580 ft. All of the sites were in rock that from a mining engineering viewpoint must be considered extremely sound. The 13 and 14 Level crosscuts were approximately 14 ft on a side and nearly square and the 11 Level crosscut was approximately 10 ft on a side. All of the crosscuts had been standing open for several years and no artificial support of any type was necessary. Extraction openings hundreds of feet on a side have been made in this mine in similar rock and these have remained open also without additional support (see Davies 1 for a recent summary of mining techniques and conditions). The geology of the Mt. Isa mine has been most recently described by Bennett.2 Briefly, Mt. THE relation of labor to the accident rate in mines is admirably epitomized by Thomas T. Read in his paper presented at the St. Louis meeting, in the sentence "Reliance for accident prevention must be upon the individual worker himself." In connection with the inspection of mines for the fixing of merit premium rates for insurance under workmen&apos;s compensation, it has been the practice of The Associated Companies to allow 60 per cent.of the credits for safeguarding of the physical hazards of the mine and 40 per cent. for the human element. By "human element" is meant. that inherent tendency of the industrial worker to be careless, negligent or disobedient, in respect to his own safety, and after that also f his fellow workman. This is a tendency not only of the laborer or of the skilled miner, but of all human beings, working or traveling, anywhere. This element of mine safety, sometimes called the moral hazard, has been admirably shown by statistics compiled from the records of the Department of Mines of the Union of South Africa to be clue in about equal measure to the carelessness of the miner and to that of the operator. These statistics show that about one-half the fatalities in mines are clue to the so-called hazard of the industry, or what is sometimes called the dangers inherent to work or misadventure. Of 2497 fatalities investigated, including over 200,000 employees, for a period of over 2 ½ years, it was found that 17.5 per cent. were due to faulty plant or material, fault of the foreman, or of the management-in short were-clue to the operator; 17.1 per cent. to disobedience of orders, carelessness or ignorance of injured persons; and 5.9 per cent. through fault of others, including fellow workmen. The fault of the operator is evidenced by failure to give proper warning, failure to inspect, failure to furnish proper equipment, and neglecting to comply with the recommendations of the inspector. THE CHAIRMAN (M. L. REQUA, San Francisco, Cal.).-We have had in California a great deal of trouble from the breaking. off and collapsing of well casings from shifting sand, and it is quite true with us as indicated in the paper, that no casing has been found sufficiently strong to withstand that. I know of wells in which casing that has not been in the hole over 2 or 3 days has collapsed and when that casing has, been pulled out it has been just as flat as your hand. I am also familiar with swelling bed rock in the gold drift mining ground of California. It does swell and keeps on swelling and never seems to stop. Just as long as tunnels are kept open in that kind of material there has to be a gang going through the tunnel constantly cutting out and easing up. They have put in timbers 24 in. in diameter in an effort to hold that kind of ground and it has always filled. The only way to succeed is to keep a gang of men busy all the time cutting out and easing down as it squeezes in. C. NARAMORE, Washington, D. C.-My experience has been very similar to yours in, the same field in the matter of breaking off of casing. I had charge of one well, in which I put in reënforced casing, anchored it in place and got 1 day&apos;s production, 150 bbl., out of it. The following morning my lease foreman telephoned that it had broken off. I thought at that time we would have more evidence, so I drove out to the well without ordering a new shoe joint. It had been customary to merely start from town with a new shoe joint, pull the pipe, take off the crooked bottom joint, start the casing back and sometimes never touch any iron (lost casing)- when redrilling the well. THE textures of straight-rolled and of cross-rolled molybdenum were first determined with the aid of pole figures by Custers and Riemersma.&apos; These authors have shown that for straight-rolling, the main texture was (100) [0111 with a considerable spread about the rolling direction. After cross-rolling a second texture was obtained in which there was a [111] axis perpendicular to the rolling plane, possessing a rotary symmetry. Recently Semchy-shen and Timmons2 in their study of preferred orientation of arc-cast molybdenum sheet obtained similar pole figures. In these two investigations, polycrystalline materials were used. In the main, the textures of molybdenum in these cases are qualitatively consistent with rolling textures of other body-centered cubic metals, such as iron and Fe-Si alloys." In the present investigation, single crystals of molybdenum were deformed by rolling with respect to specific crystallographic planes and directions. Since the deformation textures of polycrystalline aggregates have been related intimately to the behavior of individual grains,4 a study of possible correlations of final textures with respect to the initial orientations of the single crystals might conceivably lead to a better understanding of the textures. Annealing treatments were carried out after deformation in order to study the recrystallization characteristics as well as the recrystallization texture. Rolling of Single Crystals Single crystals of molybdenum (about 1/8 in. in diarn x 1-in. long), grown by the method previously described,5 were cold-rolled without intermediate anneals. Except for specimens MR-1 and MR-2, which were rolled at random in the preliminary test in order to find a proper rate of reduction, all other specimens were carefully documented as to their respective orientation before deformation by means of X-ray Laue back-reflection methods. A stereo-graphic projection was constructed from which it was possible to determine a particular plane and direction to be considered for rolling. Parallel flat surfaces were then polished metallographically with respect to a reference scratch on the specimen which was mounted in sealing wax. These flat surfaces contained the plane chosen for rolling. After etching, a Laue back-reflection photogram was again made of one of the flat surfaces to determine the exact plane of rolling. The initial orientations of all the specimens (specified by two elements for each crystal, direction of rolling and the pole of the rolling plane) are summarized in Fig. 1. The specimens were mounted in plasticene between two hardened Si-Fe plates. The sandwich was then rolled down, keeping the direction constant in the case of straight-rolling. In cross-rolling (MR-10, MR-11, and MR-12) the sandwich was rotated 90" after each pass so that every first and third pass contained the same rolling direction. Specimens MR-14, MR-15, and MR-16 were compression-rolled following the manner of Barrett." In these cases the direction of the sandwich through the rolls was changed by 3" to 5" for each pass until the specimens were rolled to the desired reduction in thickness. It was found that if extreme care was exercised in rolling, i. e., the amount of deformation per pass was extremely small, the specimens could be rolled to a large reduction in thickness. The rate of reduction used, with a single exception of MR-1. was generally 0.001 in. per 10 passes. Thus, it took about 800 passes to reduce a specimen to a final reduction in thickness of 87 to 98 pct. The results of rolling are shown in Table I. Cold-Rolling Textures The final orientations were determined by the conventional Laue transmission method," using molybdenum radiation, with or without a zirconium filter. Pole figures were plotted from (1101 and (200) reflections in which three degrees of intensity— heavy, medium, and light—were determined visually. IN the decreasing order of the tonnages involved, the uses of phosphates can be grouped conveniently into three general classes, namely, fertilizer; chemicals for military, industrial, and technical purposes; and mineral feed for livestock. The quantity of phosphate used as fertilizer, principally in the form of superphosphate, has always exceeded by far that used for all other purposes, though in recent years a marked increase has occurred in its consumption for the other two general classes of uses. Prior to the present century large quantities of superphosphate, as well as a considerable portion of the production of phosphorus chemicals, score made from bone materials which were plentiful and cheap in some areas and which could be more easily processed than phosphate rock for the manufacture of chemicals. Today, however phosphate rock has almost completely displaced bone as a raw material for the manufacture of chemically processed phosphates in nearly all countries of the world.
