The relation of labor to the accident rate in mines is admirably epitomized by Thomas T. Read in his paper presented at the St. Louis meeting, in the sentence "Reliance for accident prevention must be upon the individual worker himself." In connection with the inspection of mines for the fixing of merit premium rates for insurance under workmen's compensation, it has been the practice of The Associated Companies to allow 60 per cent, of the credits for safeguarding of the physical hazards of the mine and 40 per cent. for the human element. By "human element" is meant that inherent tendency of the industrial worker to be careless, negligent, or disobedient, in respect to his own safety, and after that also of his fellow workman. This is a tendency not only of the laborer or of the skilled miner, but of all human beings, working or traveling anywhere. This element of mine safety, sometimes called the moral hazard, has been admirably shown by statistics, compiled from the records of the Department of Mines of the Union of South Africa, to be due in about equal measure to the carelessness of the miner and to that of the operator. These statistics show that about one-half the fatalities in mines are due to the so-called hazard of the industry, or what is sometimes called the dangers inherent to work or misadventure. Of 2497 fatalities investigated, including over 200,000 employees, for a period of over 21/2 years, it was found that 17.5 per cent. were due to faulty plant or material, fault of the foreman, or of the management—in short were due to the operator; 17.1 per cent. to disobedience of orders, carelessness or ignorance of injured persons; and 5.9 per cent. through fault of others, including fellow workmen. The fault of the operator is evidenced by failure to give proper warning, failure to inspect, failure to furnish proper equipment, and neglecting to comply with the recommendations of the inspector. The purpose of this paper is to present a contour map that shows the geographical variation in geothermal gradients in the Mid-Continent and Gulf Coast oil fields. Introduction Frequently there arises the need for an estimation of the temperature to be expected at a predetermined depth in working with a wildcat or in deepening old production into 'Ones that are relatively unknown. The study of geothermal gradients in oil fields has been made previously by many investigators. One of the pioneers in this work was C. E. Van Orstrand,' who, as well as most of the other investigators, was primarily interested in the relation between temperature and depth in a given locality. Between 192r and 1929, American Petroleum Institute Research Project NO. 25 fostered a thorough study of earth temperatures.2 K. IV. French did some work in California, the results of which were published in 1939.3 In most of these studies, an attempt was made to correlate temperatures in a rather localized area. This paper will show the results of an attempt to correlate temperature gradients over rather large Portions of the Mid-Continent and Gulf Coast area. Method of Obtaining Data It has been found that for complete thermal equilibrium to be established in a well, the well must stand undisturbed for a period of several hours to several weeks, depending upon the way the well was produced prior to the shut-in period. The data in this paper were obtained in conjunction with running pressures in wells or in taking samples of reservoir fluid. Glass maximum recording thermometers were used in all but a few instances. The wells had been shut in from one hour up to I. or 12 days. Since the wells were normal producing wells, some of the shut-in times undoubtedly were insufficient for complete thermal equilibrium to have been established and the temperatures measured do not necessarily represent the true earth temperatures. They do represent the temperature conditions that will be encountered in a well that is producing oil. The data, therefore, can be useful in working with or in estimating the temperatures to be expected in producing reservoirs. In obtaining a thermal gradient by dividing the difference in temperature of the formation and the mean annual surface temperature by the depth of the formation, one is assuming the depth-temperature line to be straight. Depth-temperature curves are almost straight lines (Fig. I). However, on close examination of accurate data, a slight curvature usually is observed. Most wells yield curves with slopes increasing with increasing depth. These curves are believed to be from wells that are in and are underlain by sedimentary material. Some few curves have slopes that decrease with increasing depth. These curves are believed to be from wells that are underlain rather closely by granite or some other igneous rock. The Michigan native-copper district has produced about 5,400,000 tons of copper since mining began in 1845. The copper occurs primarily as open-space fillings and replacements in amygdaloidal flow tops and conglomerate beds of the Portage Lake Lava Series, of middle Keweenawan age. Secondary minerals with which the copper is associated include microcline, chlorite, epidote, pumpellyite, prehnite, quartz, and calcite; zeolites, other than laumontite, are not abundant. A zonal pattern of the secondary minerals transects bedding and suggests regional metamorphism mainly to the grade of the prehnite-pumpellyite graywacke facies of Coombs. Most of the major copper deposits are near the upper limit of abundant quartz in this zonal pattern. The distribution of copper in both amygdaloid and conglomerate deposits is controlled partly by primary permeability of the rocks and partly by later tectonic fracturing that was concentrated in the mechanically weak flow tops and sedimentary beds. Ore shoots and deposits are therefore controlled partly by primary structural features, such as areas of thick and thin fragmental amygdaloid or the boundaries of conglomerate lenses, and partly by regional structure: a number of ore deposits are in synclinal downwarps. The copper-bearing solutions that formed the deposits were ascending. They may have come from a large concealed intrusive, or may have been driven out of the porous tops of lava flows when the rocks were compacted and metamorphosed at great depth in the central part of the Lake Superior syncline. The second hypothesis seems more consistent with the widespread distribution of the copper, its relation to mineral zoning that represents truly regional metamorphism, its native state, and the likelihood that copper deposition was later than most or all of Keweenawan volcanism.

A detailed compressive stress-strain analysis and transmission electron microscopy investigation has been made of the deformation behavior occurring in a 50 at. pct Ni-Ti (hypoeutectoid) alloy and a 54.5 at. pct Ni-Ti (hypereutectoid) alloy. In the case of the hypoeutectoid alloy, three stages of work hardening are observed. Stage I occurs at a very low stress and is associated with plastic deformation via martensite formation. Stage 11 is characterized by very rapid work hardening and is due to difficulties in causing further deformation in the fine martensite aggregate produced in Stage I. Stage III which occurs at very high stress levels is characterized by smaller work hardening rates and is due to the plastic deformation arising from alternate reconversions of the original martensites to martensites of varying orientation. Rapid quenching of the hypereutectoid alloy leads to very high yield strengths and is related to a fine precipitate dispersion that such treatment brings about. The present investigation represents the final phase of a three-part study directed toward an understanding of the solid-state transformations in near equi-atomic Ni-Ti alloys as well as the deformation mechanisms associated with these alloys. In the first part,"2 to be henceforth referred to as I, it was found that alternate simple shears on {112} planes and in (111) directions convert the parent B2 structure in the equiatomic NiTi alloy into two distinct close-packed monoclinic martensites. All of the marten-sites were of this type, whether they were formed by cooling or by plastic deformation, whether induced to form in bulk samples or in thin foils, or whether examined in the electron microscope at room temperature or below. On the other hand, in the second part of this investigation,3 to be reffered to as 11, it was shown that upon slow cooling to about 640°C. alloys in the neighborhood of NiTi which possess the B2 structure transform eutectoidally into their equilibrium phases Ti2Ni and TiNi3. However, preceding the formation of these equilibrium phases a series of metastable intermediate phases are formed. This paper will set as its goal the elucidation of the remarkable deformation behavior exhibited by NiTi. In particular, Buehler and Wiley4 have found equiatomic NiTi to be surprisingly soft, while Buehler et al.5 have shown this alloy to possess a memory effect: i.e., upon bending at room temperature it will revert to its original shape when heated to above about 50°C. In I it was shown that NiTi was soft in the sense that the yield stress was low; nevertheless, the alloy work-hardened at an extremely rapid rate to very high stress levels. On the other hand, the hypereutectoid alloys with somewhat higher nickel, say 54.5 at. pct (60 wt pct) have enormously increased yield strengths compared to those of the equiatomic alloys. In order to determine the atomistic processes giving rise to the above behavior, it was decided to examine samples that were wafered from bulk specimens deformed in compression to various strains using the techniques of transmission electron microscopy. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE All of the alloys used in the present investigation contained either 50 at. pct Ni (55.06 wt pct) or 54.5 at. pct Ni (60 wt pct) and were arc-melted in the form of a finger using the same techniques described in I and II. The finger was capsulated in a stainless-steel jacket and swaged at 850°C into rods. Compression specimens 0.300 in, long and 0.200 in. in diam were machined from these rods. In order to completely re-crystallize the samples and remove residual stresses, all of them were capsulated in evacuated quartz, annealed for 1/2 at 1050°C. and then furnace-cooled. Compression tests were carried out in an Instron tensile testing machine covering a range of temperatures from —196° to 200°C using procedures described previously.6'7 In all cases crosshead speed was 0.02 in. per min. Wafers 0.015 in. thick were spark-cut from the cylindrical samples at 45 deg to the compression axes after they had been deformed to the desired strain. These specimens were then spark-planed to about 0.005 in. and then electrochemically thinned for examination by transmission electron microscopy as described in I.

A study has been made of the effect of unidirectional solidification on the creep behavior, stress-rupture properties, and thermal shock resistance of four nickel-base superalloys. The alloys Mar-MZOO, B-1900, IN 100, and TRW 1900 show improved rupture ductility and thermal shock resistance when tested with the columnar grains parallel to the major stress axis during test. The relative improvement in creep-rupture properties depends on the intrinsic strength of the alloy, a property which depends on composition, heat-treatnient, and crystallographic orientation. The data clarifies some of the factors affecting the properlies of the cast nickel-base superalloy. COMPONENTS designed for high-temperature use have, in recent years, been fabricated by precision casting techniques using nickel-base alloys developed specifically for use in the conventionally cast condition. This development was a result of both the increasing complexity of the component and the recognition that high-temperature strength was incompatible with workability. The use of castings can be economically favorable, but, more important, the recent complex designs of air-cooled gas turbine blades and vanes in alloys which possess the necessary high-temperature strength cannot be forged. Common modes of failure of high-temperature components are excessive creep, creep rupture, and thermal fatigue. If rupture occurs then the mechanism is usually by inter crystalline cracking along those grain boundaries oriented transverse to the major stress axis. In the stronger alloys, rapid propagation of intercrystalline cracks result in apparent premature failure demonstrated by the absence of third stage creep in a creep-rupture test and low rupture ductility. Tensile ductility shows a similar trend, that is, decreasing ductility with increase in strength. It is not surprising, therefore, that increases in creep strength have only been obtained with a loss in resistance to thermal shock, a property which shows a dependence on tensile ductility. VerSnyder and ~uard' showed that the application of unidirectional solidification to a brittle Ni-Cr-A1 alloy both improved the rupture life of the alloy and increased rupture ductility. Since this casting method results in columnar grains, it appeared that the solution to the lack of ductility in nickel-base alloy components was the elimination of the source of failure, namely the transverse grain boundaries. This concept was recently developed2 to produce cast-to-size gas-turbine blades and vanes consisting entirely of columnar grains oriented parallel to the major stress axis of the component. Not only did the process impart increased rupture life and ductility to the components, but it also increased their resistance to thermal shock. During this development, the effect of unidirectional solidification on the properties of several alloys was investigated. The resulting data allows certain conclusions to be drawn regarding the factors affecting the creep and stress-rupture properties of the cast nickel-base superalloy and also its resistance to thermal shock. Detailed information was obtained on the alloys Mar-MZOO, B-1900, In 100, and TRW 1900. The composition of the alloys studied are shown in Table I. MATERIAL PREPARATION AND TESTING The conventionally cast alloys are cast as +-in.-diam bars in innoculated shell molds under conditions designed to maintain control of grain size. Unidirec-tionally solidified casting were produced in the form of 3-in.-diam ingots. Specimens from the latter were machined such that the axes of the columnar grains were parallel with the axis of the test bar, except in certain cases where the transverse properties of the material were being evaluated. The specimens were tested in an axial loading creep machine.' Temperatures were measured with thermocouples, attached just outside each end of the gage length, to assure uniform temperature along the entire specimen. Chromel/alumel thermocouples were used up to 1800"F and Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples above 1800"F. The specimen temperature was recorded and maintained within i2"F throughout the test. Creep extensions were measured automatically with extenso-meters attached to ridges on the specimen and recorded continuously using linear variable differential transformers and multipoint recording equipment. MICROSTRUCTURE The microstructures of transverse sections of the four alloys studied are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 1 shows optical micrographs of the alloys, both in the conventionally cast and unidirectionally solidified conditions. Each alloy displays a cored dendritic structure, a distribution of MC carbide, and the presence of the y — y' eutectic constituent.~ In the case of IN 100 and B-1900, Fig. 1 indicates that in these specimens the eutectic is degenerate. That is, it consists only of y' pools indicating that the y constituent has been solutioned during the cooling period after solidification. The major effect of unidirectional solidification on the microstructures of the alloys is a tendency to promote a more dendritic form of MC carbide and an increase in dendrite arm spacing, both effects being a result of the slower solidification rate in the unidirectional solidification technique. THOUGH known as the platinum-group metal- the sextuplet, platinum, palladium, iridium. rhodium, osmium, ruthenium, might well be called the American metals or perhaps Pan-American metals, as the ore containing them eras first discovered in South America, and in recent years the largest production has come from North America. The South American alluvial deposits, which also, contain gold, are in active production, as are the alluvial platinum deposits of Alaska, but the main production is from the copper-nickel ores of Sudbury, Ontario. The Russian deposits in the Urals were the source of most of the worlds platinum for about 100 years, but since 1934 have assumed second place. For a time considerable amounts of platinum came from several rather rich deposits in South Africa but these were exhausted quickly. However, a tremendous reserve of lower-grade ore exists there, which could be worked profitably if the price of platinum were considerably higher.

THE Midvale mill of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company is situated on a flat site whose elevation is 50 ft above that of the Jordan River. Tailings are impounded in the area between the river and the flat upon which the mill and railroad switchyard are located. The water supply is pumped from the Galena canal which leads from the river at a point some ten miles to the south. The mill has a present capacity of approximately 1700 tons daily. It started out originally in 1926 as a 750 ton three-unit plant. The tonnage was gradually increased to 1200 tons by 1934, and in late 1935 a fourth unit was added. The accompanying flowsheet shows the principal equipment and how it is utilized. The ore is principally sulphide with varying degrees of oxidation, with individual lots ranging widely in both precious and base metal content. INTRODUCTION Tailings produced by many uranium milling operations consist of fine sands with some silt and slimes. When fine sandy materials are placed by hydraulic methods behind an impermeable dam, they are deposited in a loose state and some portion remains saturated. These saturated, loose fine sands are highly susceptible to liquefaction, the phenomenon in which a monotonic or cyclic disturbance causes excess pore water pressure and, concurrently, a total loss of strength in the sand. Once liquefied, the fine sand flows, causing collapse of supported structures. The potential for such a liquefaction failure was identified and successfully treated at Sohio Western Mining Company's L-Bar Uranium Operations near Seboyeta, New Mexico. The Sohio tailings dam is an earthfill starter dam with tailings raises constructed upstream of the starter dam crest. Beginning with the start of mill operations in 1976, tailings were deposited hydraulically in the impoundment behind the starter dam. As the tailings level approached the crest of the starter dam, beached tailings were excavated and placed in lifts by a dozer to form two raises above the crest of the starter dam. As the impoundment has gradually filled with tailings, the decant water pond level has risen. Correspondingly, the water level in the tailings dam, upstream of the chimney drain, has also risen. By August 1980, the phreatic surface was above the crest of the starter dam and stability analyses indicated that the tailings dam did not have the safety factor of 1.0, under static loading with liquefaction, implicit in the 1980 New Mexico State Engineer's requirements. The problem related directly to the high phreatic surface in the loose sandy tailings behind a dam structure that was not capable of resisting failure which might develop in liquefied tailings. Two methods of stability enhancement were considered for the Sohio dam. One method was reinforcement of the dam using a clay buttress placed against the downstream slope. The other method was installation of horizontal drains through the starter dam to drain decant water and lower the phreatic surface. Either method would increase the stability of the dam. However, the comparative analysis of the methods indicated that horizontal drainage offered significant advantages in cost and could provide a more direct remedy of the source of the problem, the saturated section of tailings. In addition, a drainage system would be more amenable to modification and more quickly installed than a buttress. On the other hand, a clay buttress could be more directly controlled, would involve routine earthwork, and has successful precedent. Therefore, the buttress approach would involve less risk. After weighing the advantages of both methods and the costs versus risks, the horizontal drainage approach was selected. Consequently, a horizontal pipe drain system was recommended and designed (D’Appolonia, 1981a). This paper describes the design and installation of the drainage system and its initial performance. PIPE DRAIN SYSTEM DESIGN Design Criteria and Parameters To increase the stability of the dam to acceptable levels, the drainage system had to lower the phreatic surface behind the dam to the level calculated to give a minimum safety factor of 1.0 under conditions of liquefaction. In addition, the system needed to be essentially self-operating, easy to maintain, and economical. To accomplish these objectives, the following design criteria were established: 1. The pipe drains must lower the phreatic surface at least 4.3 m (14 ft.) at the midpoint along the dam (the deepest section) and by proportionately smaller amounts toward the abutments to satisfy safety factor requirements.

On the basis of the recommendation of Lovell, Vogel, and Wernick,&apos; Fry&apos;s reagent*2 was recently c) if decoration of the dislocations by carbon or nitrogen atoms is a factor in the etch pitting. Experiments were performed with samples of a commercial 1020 steel, a vacuum-melted iron (C - 10 to 15 ppm, 0 - 20 to 50 ppm, N < 2 ppm), both annealed 4 hr at 1100°C, and a zone-refined iron (C - 3 to 5 ppm, 0 - 10 ppm, N < 1 ppm ) in the as-cast condition. Saomple surfaces were prepared by grinding to 600A grit and electropolishing. Initially, effects of etching the steel with modifications of the basic Fry composition were examined. It was found that increasing the alcohol or HC1 concentratior~ retarded dislocation pitting; reducing the acid content promoted secondary pitting. Cooling the reagent and the sample did not improve the quality of the etch pits. Best results were obtained with freshly prepared reagent modified by increasing the CuC12 content to 15 g. This composition was used in subsequent experiments. Annealed samples were etched 10 to 15 sec; cold-worked samples —2 to 5 sec.

Synopsis.-A description of the working of the mills of this company and the metallurgical practice in vogue, by which a remarkably. complex silver ore, averaging 54 oz. of silver per ton (run-of-mine ore), is treated to give a 95.66 per cent. extraction. The main features of the, processes are: The cyanide amalgamation of the high-grade ore. The cyanide treatment of the low-grade ore, after extremely fine grinding and close classification, in a caustic soda solution. The use of a wet desulphurizing process to break up refractory silver minerals. The substitution of aluminum dust for zinc dust as a precipitant. The recovery and shipment of over 13,000,000 oz. of silver in bullion at. 997 to 999 fine since this metallurgy was inaugurated, about 2.5 years ago. On the completion and successful operation of the mill to treat their . high-grade ore,1 the Nipissing Mining Co., under the general management of R. B. Watson, started a series of investigations of the possible treatment of the low-grade ore by the cyanide process, so that they would be in a position to market only silver bullion. These tests were run in July, 1911, on a large scale, by G. H. Clevenger, on an average mixture of Nipissing ore. The results obtained by a partial amalgamation followed by cyanide treatment gave an extraction varying from 90 to 93 per cent. and were sufficiently encouraging to warrant Charles Butters, the company&apos;s Consulting Metallurgist, in recommending that the new low-grade ore mill under contemplation should be a cyanide mill, instead of a concentrator. The cost of such a mill, capable of treating 200 tons per day, to obtain a 90 per cent. extraction at a working cost of $3 per ton of ore treated, was estimated at $250,000.

Cu-Pb alloys in the vicinity of the monotectic composition have been directionally solidified under a high temperature gradient at rates up to 2 X l0-&apos; cm per sec. Over a wide range of compositions, high growth rates yield a composite structure consisting of continuous rods of lead in a copper matrix. This range of compositions increases with increasing growth rate, in agreement with arguments based on the relative velocities of composite growth and the growth of copper dendrites or lead drops. The breakdown of the composite structure at slow growth rates is explained in terms of the relative interphase surface energies. The observed interrod spacings of the composite structure are large compared with the predictions of the Jackson-Hunt equations of eutectic growth. ThE directional solidification of many eutectic alloys produces fine composite structures of parallel lamellae or rods. There has been considerable interest not only in the fundamentals of this two-phase solidification process,&apos;-3 but also in the interesting physical properties produced by such regular and aniso-tropic microstructures. Composite structures can be grown only over a limited range of composition, beyond which coarse primary dendrites of one phase appear. In organic eutec-tics, this composition range of composite structures has been shown to increase with increasing growth rate.7"10 These results were explained in terms of the relative velocities of composite (coupled) growth and dendritic growth. Although similar arguments should apply to metallic eutectics,11-13 suitable experimental results are lacking. In contrast to the work on eutectics, the directional solidification of monotectic alloys has received little attention. (The monotectic reaction is similar to the eutectic reaction, except that one of the resulting phases is a liquid, which subsequently solidifies in a separate reaction at a lower temperature.) Directional solidification of some monotectic alloys&apos;4715 yields regular rodlike microstructures, whereas in other cases macroscopic separation of solid and liquid phases occurs.16 chadwick17 rationalized these results in terms of the probable relative magnitudes of the various interphase surface energies. A recent study of chill-cast Cu-Pb alloys18 revealed a fine rodlike microstructure in alloys near the monotectic composition. It was decided to investigate the directional solidification of such alloys, and to determine the range of composition and growth conditions yielding composite structures. The Cu-Pb system is convenient for such a study, both because it is simple metallurgically, with no compound formation and negligible solid solubilities, and because its basic properties are well-documented. Recent literature on the Cu-Pb system includes studies of bulk thermo-dynamic properties,&apos;g surface energies,20"21 densi-ties,25 and diffusion constants.a6 A similar study of the directional solidification of Cu-Pb alloys was recently undertaken, independently, by Kamio and Oya." EXPERIMENTAL Alloys were prepared by melting 99.999 pct Cu and 99.999 pct Pb in a graphite crucible, stirring well, and pouring into a cold graphite mold. Rods 0.175 in. in diam were machined from the ingots. Alloy compositions studied ranged from 25 to 55 wt pct Pb. Samples were placed in graphite crucibles 5 in. long with 4 in. OD and 0.035-in. walls. They were melted under flowing argon in a vertical, two-zone. platinum -wound furnace. A voltage stabilizer was used to minimize fluctuations in input power. The narrow specimen diameter minimized convection. Directional solidification was achieved by driving the crucible downward into a +-in. hole in a water-cooled copper toroid. The toroid was located immediately below the narrow end zone of the furnace. The end zone was separately powered to maintain high local temperature. Therefore a high temperature gradient (approximately 300 deg per cm) was maintained in the specimen throughout the run. The crucible motion was screw-driven. and a wide range of drive speeds were available. The limited rate of heat removal caused a thermal lag in the specimens at high drive rates. However. temperature-time curves from thermocouples imbedded in a representative sample indicated that the average growth rate still approximately equaled the drive rate. Although the specimens were initially homogeneous, melting and re solidification redistributed the lead. producing composition variations of several percent along the specimen length. (During melting. lead melted first and ran down the sample surface. Rapid freezing tended to reproduce the resulting composition gr~dient, but slow freezing did not because a slow-moving interface tended to reject lead. as discussed later.) To determine local composition. ;-g samples were cut from regions exhibiting various microstructures and were chemically analyzed for lead content. Micrographs were taken on as-polished or lightly etched surfaces. Three-dimensional structure of the lead network was viewed with a scanning electron microscope after removal of some of the copper matrix with nitric acid. RESULTS Several different microstructures are observed, depending on composition and drive rate. Because melting and resolidification produced composition gradients, results are best presented in t&ms of final local composition, rather than initial or average composition. A metallographic study was made of deformation twinning (Neumann lamellae) in ingot iron slowly deformed in tension at —196O and —150°C. The results showed that twinning is initiated mainly during the initial stages of plastic deformation. However, the breadth of the twins generally increases with increase in strain up to fracture of the specimen. HE results of an investigation of the effect of low I temperatures on the flow, fracture, strain hardening, and strain aging characteristics, and the true stress-strain relationship for specimens of ingot iron deformed in tension were reported recently.1,2 In that study specimens of ingot iron, in different initial conditions, were slowly deformed in tension at various temperatures between —196" and +100°C. A phenomenon observed, but only briefly reported, was the formation of deformation twins (Neumann lamellae) in the specimens deformed at the lower temperatures. Preliminary metallographic examination of these specimens indicated that there was apparently some correlation between the deformation twinning and the strain of the specimen and that this factor merited further investigation. Some recent investigations have indicated a direct association of Neumann lamellae and the fracture of the metal. Bruckner".&apos; * postulated that the twinning immediately precedes the fracture and the latter is initiated by the stopping of the propagation of twins, either at subgrain boundaries or at other structural features. Tipper and Sullivan5 postulated that Neumann lamellae are initiated by the shock or a shock wave set up at fracture in the still highly stressed unbroken metal, and that a high rate of deformation is a necessary condition for their formation. An extensive metallographic examination, therefore, was made of many of the specimens used in the study of ingot iron at this Bureau and of additional specimens deformed to selected strains under various conditions. The present paper summarizes the effects of deformation under these conditions upon the breadth and scope of the deformation twins. Other features of twinning will be discussed in another paper. Material and Testing Procedure All of the specimens were prepared from one lot of ingot iron, as hot-rolled, of chemical composition other than iron as follows: C, 0.02 pct; Mn, 0.02; P, 0.005; S, 0.018; Si, 0.002; Cu, 0.10; 0, 0.058; and N, 0.002. Cylindrical tensile specimens with a 2 in. gage length were used. The reduced section was slightly tapered from each end; the diameter (0.438 in.) at the midsection of the gage length was about 0.003 in. less than at the ends. The specimens were finished to the final dimensions by grinding and polishing in the axial direction. The ends of the specimens were machined with 3/4 in. x 10 threads and the shoulder fillets were machined to a radius of 0.75 in. The specimens were extended slowly in tension (deformation rate less than 0.5 pct reduction in area per minute) while immersed in an appropriate cryogenic liquid maintained at the desired temperature. The minimum diameter of the specimen was measured during the test by means of a specially designed reduction of area gage accurate to 0.0001 in." A detailed description of the testing equipment and the method of maintaining the desired temperature is given in a previous paper.&apos; Each specimen, after deformation to a specified strain at a selected temperature, was sectioned longitudinally and examined metallographically. The preparation of specimens for metallographic examination was carried out in the usual manner by mechanical polishing and etching. Results and Discussion Deformation twins in specimens of ingot iron extended slowly in tension at —196" and —150°C are shown by the representative micrographs of Figs. 1

Two 4-ft wide DSM screens were installed during 1957 in one unit of the two-unit heavy media cy- clone section of the Holman-Cliffs concentrator at Taconite, Minn., following successful laboratory test work on a 1-ft screen. The two screens materially reduced the amount of media sent to the magnetic separator cleaning circuit. Wear life was good and fine size capacity was high. Briefly, the Holman-Cliffs heavy media cyclone plant uses -65 mesh magnetite as media and 10-in. diam., 30º Ni-Hard cyclones as separatory vessels. Feed to the plant averages 130 long tons per hr of -1/8 in. +65 mesh material. The conventional heavy media circuit uses drum or spiral type separatory units and treats +l/8 or 3/16-in. material. The medium is generally -65 mesh ferrosilicon. Ore and media are readily separated by screening at about 6 mesh. At this size, capacity is high and wear and maintenance are not excessive. The heavy media cyclone plant requires an efficient separation between +65 mesh ore and -65 mesh media. To reduce costs, however, the separation was made at a coarser size with the result that the media was un- duly contaminated and it was necessary to clean large tonnages of media and ore in magnetic separators. Due to the high capital cost of these units, their number was kept to a minimum and, consequently, they were overloaded. As a result, the separation between magnetic media and nonmagnetics was not sharp and the magnetite losses were high.

The relative costs of heating a reservoir by steam injection and by combustion have been examined. The comparison was based on a model similar to that proposed by Chu.&apos; The cost of boiler feed water, the price of fuel, pressure and plant capacity were parameters in determin-ing the costs of air compression and steam generation. The analyses compare the cost of heating to the same radius by the two methods. Results suggest that the two primary factors for comparison are the price of fuel and the amount of crude burned during underground combustion. The cost of fuel has a greater effect on the cost of heat from steam than it does on its cost by combustion. As a result, analyses indicate that when the price of fuel is low, steam may be unequivocally cheaper than air. The influence of heat loss is such, however, that as the heated radius increases combustion becomes relatively more competitive depending upon the amount of crude burned. This implies that steam may be cheaper for small stimulation jobs (huff and puff) but combustion may be more economically attractive for heating large areas (flooding). INTRODUCTION Use of thermal methods of recovery is an accepted fact today. After an induction period of several years, processes are being widely used that involve reservoir heating to augment recovery. Of the several techniques, steam injection and forward combustion appear to be destined to dominate the field. Although the objectives of both are the same, the basic differences between generating heat in situ and injecting heat after surface generation influence the cost in different ways. This study compares the cost of heating a reservoir either by steam injection or by forward combustion. There has been no consideration of recovery. Presumably, recovery from the swept region would be high in either case. The sole consideration was the cost of heating to the same radial distance by either process. PROCEDURE THE MODEL The basis for comparison was a mathematical model similar to that used by Chu&apos; for combustion. The model simulates a radial heat wave in two-dimensional cylindricaI coordinates. It includes heat generation, conduction and convection within the reservoir and conduction in the bounding formations. Thus, heat losses from the formation are considered. Three significant modifications were made. 1. Equal logarithmic increments rather than equal increments were used for the mesh spacing in the r direction. By this technique large distances were simulated with relatively few mesh spaces. 2. A backward difference approximation to the convection term was used to avoid troublesome oscillations which result from a central difference approximation when the convection term is large. 3. The radial increments of the combustion zone motion were not necessarily uniquely related to the mesh configuration. The cumbersome step function introduced by the heat of vaporization of steam was circumvented by assuming the enthalpy of the steam to be a linear function of temperature between reservoir temperature and steam temperature. This is equivalent to assuming an average heat capacity numerically equal to the difference between the enthalpy of saturated steam and the enthalpy of water at reservoir temperature divided by the difference between the two temperatures. Heat losses obtained by this model are in essential agreement with those obtained by the analytical solution of Rubenshtein.&apos; A detailed description of the model is presented in the Appendix. Using the model, the times required to heat to particular radial distances were obtained as a function of injection rate and other physical parameters. For the steam case, injected fluid was assumed to be saturated steam at pressures of either 500, 1,000 or 1,500 psia. The corresponding temperatures are 467, 544 and 596F, respectively. Thickness ranged from 10 to 50 ft and injection rate ranged from 100,000 to 1 million Ib/D. Reservoir and overburden temperatures at the injection well were assumed to be that of saturated steam at the injection pressure. The effect of maintaining the overburden temperature at the well at a different temperature (initial reservoir temperature) was examined with no significant change in behavior. The influence of wellbore heat losses for the steam case was determined in the following manner. The rates of heat loss as a function of time were estimated using an approach similar to that suggested by Ramey." he data were based on injection through 2%-in. tubing in 7-in. casing. Integration of these data over the entire iniection period yielded the total heat loss. Total heat losses were then corrected to their equivalents in steam (this number resulted from dividing the total heat loss by the latent heat). This was considered additional steam required to accomplish the reservoir heating and the total cost was increased accordingly.

Most of the roofing granules produced in Pennsylvania are made by two companies at three plants. The Advance Industrial Supply Co. has three quarries and a mill at Gladhill Station, in southern Adams County. The Funkhouser Company is actively engaged in mining, quarrying and milling at Charmian, about one mile west of Gladhill Station, and at Delta, in southern York County. These three plants produced approximately 100,000 short tons of granules in 1943. The production of rooling granules in 1937 for the whole country was only about 500,000 tons, generally indicating the large growth of the industry since that time. The fundamentals of producing roofing granules were discussed comprehensively by G. W. Josephson in a paper before the Industrial Minerals Division in October 1943 (TP 1725, this volume page 460). The purpose of this paper is to describe the actual methods of mining the rock and milling it to make roofing granules, as practiced by the three Pennsylvania plants. Mining and Milling Funkhouser Company (Delta) The Funkhouser Company, near Delta, in southern York County, Pennsylvania, operates three joined quarries and a mine in the Peach Bottom slate. The joined quarries extend 1200 ft. in a northeast-southwest direction along the strike of the slate cleavage and are about 200 ft. .wide. The working face is about 45 ft. high. The quarrying operation is rather simple: Ingersoll-Rand Jackhamers, I-in. and 1 1/4-in., with hollow drill steel, are used to undercut the quarry face with 10-ft. holes. The face is "blown" and allowed to slump on the quarry floor. Loaded by a Marion electric shovel into trucks, the shattered rock is taken to the primary crusher 2500 ft. away. In addition to the normal quarrying operations, a drift into the northeast wall of the middle quarry was begun about 1935, and has advanced about 2000 ft. since then. Rooms have been driven at angles to the drift along choice beds of slate. The drifts and rooms have a roof more than 35 ft. high and the main drift and rooms are all more than 40 ft. wide. There is no cribbing at any place in the mine. Several of the rooms were driven upward on a 5&apos; slope and in some of them there was stop-ing. Ingersoll-Rand Jackhamers are used, and only wet drilling is practiced. When visited in January 1940, an electric shovel was operating at the head of the drift, scooping up the slate blasted out of the working face. This, too, is trucked to the primary crusher. Some of the better quality slate is saved for making slate shingles. The primary crusher, which is a No. 30 McCulley gyratory, receives the slate from the trucks and crushes it to about a-in. size (Fig. I). An investigation has been conducted to compare short transverse and longitudinal fatigue and fracture properties in 4.25-in.-thick, high strength aluminum alloy plates. One plate was produced using standard rolling techniques while the other was pre.forged before rolling. Little difference was shown in fatigue strength of longitudinal specimens taken from mid-thickness of the plate. Howeuer, in the short transverse orientation fatigue strengths at 107 cycles were about 25 and 50 pct less, respectively, for the preforged and standard rolled plate. Differences in fatigue strengths were attributed to grain size and shape as well US orientation of constituents. Fatigue crack propagation rates and fracture toughness were compared at three different stress intensity (K) levels, using a constant compliance, double cantilever, wedge-shaped specimen. In a given plate, comparable fatigue crack Propagation rates were observed in the longitudinal (i9W) and short transverse (TW) orientations. Somezuhat gveater rates were observed in the short transzerse (TR) orientation. The preforged plute gave a lower rate for all three directions. Considerable secondary cracking developed, at times, over portions of the fatigue crack in both plates, particularly at the lower stress intensity levels in the short transverse specimens. Micro structure revealed constituent stringers as possible causes of the crack branching. Fracture toughness was considerably less in both plates in the short transuerse orientation. It is concluded that preforging not only improved directional tensile properties but also the fatigue and fracture properties in general. On occasion, aluminum plates have been milled away for hinges or bolted connections and stressed through the thickness or short transverse direction. Little or no information is available concerning fatigue characteristics or fracture toughness in this loading orientation in aluminum plate, or of the effect of fabrication on these properties. It was the intent of this project to examine, develop, and apply a unique specimen that has been advocated by others to study the fatigue characteristics and fracture toughness of two differently fabricated high strength aluminum plates. Linear elastic fracture mechanics criteria may be applied to the specimen so that the fatigue crack propagation rate and fracture toughness data may be of use for design or inspection applications. Fatigue characteristics are generally measured in the longtudinal or long transverse direction, where fairly large specimens such as center notched panels,&apos; are usually employed. Limitations are evident due to plate thickness, however, in the type and size of specimen that may be tested in the short transverse direction without extensions. Therefore, a specimen that is to be loaded in this direction should, for convenience, be compact. The general type of fatigue crack propagation specimens discussed and employed herein meet this requirement. These specimens are commonly called double cantilever beam specimens and lately "crackline-loaded edge-crack specimens".2 They may vary from a slope of zero (parallel-sides) to a wedge shape, the type employed herein. In general for most specimens the stress intensity KI at the tip of a crack is a function of the load, P and crack length, a. Some varieties of the wedge shaped specimen, however, give essentially a constant stress intensity KI over a considerable range of crack length.&apos; This feature can be a valuable asset in fatigue crack propagation experiments because the stress-intensity can be controlled simply by controlling the load without regard to crack length. MATERIAL AND METHODS Material. A standard rolled (light pass reduction) and a ~reforged and rolled (heavy pass reduction) plate of 7179-T651 material were used for the evaluation. The chemistry, processing history and average tensile properties are shown in Table I. Specimen Selection and Preparation. The specimen selected for the generation of fatigue initiation or S-N data was an axial tension type and is shown in Fig. 1. Specimens were taken from mid-thickness in the longitudinal and short transverse directions from both plates. Specimens were polished with 500 grit paper in a direction parallel to the loading axis. For the fatigue crack propagation tests, the specimen shown in Fig. 2 was used. This is similar to a specimen that has been employed by Mostovoy3 for fracture toughness studies on 7075-T6 aluminum alloy. It also fortuitiously agrees quite well with the dimensions of a specimen for which Srawley and Gross2

The present paper describes a number of experiments with fine silver, coin silver, silver-cadmium oxide and silver-nickei-copper compacts, prepared by powder metallurgical methods. The test data are of a preliminary nature, since most of the work was exploratory. Fine Silver Eject of Compacting Pressure on Hardness and Density during Cold and Hot Pressing The cold-welding properties of silver have received considerable attention and the welding characteristics are functions of such variables as: cleanliness of metal particles (impurities and adsorbed gases), chemical nobility of particles, plasticity and hardness, particle assortment, particle shape, particle porosity, apparent density, temperature, pressure, time, recrystalliza-tion characteristics. Chemical nobility, plasticity and low temperature of recrystallization after work-hardening are responsible for the excellent low-temperature bonding properties of silver. Several series of compacts were pressed at pressures of 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 70 and 80 tons per square inch, at temperatures of 32°C. (room temperature), l00°, 2000, 300°, 400°, and 450°C. Silver powder of minus 325-mesh, produced by displacing silver from a nitrate solution by means of copper, was used. The density was calcuiated from accurately measured and weighed compacts. The hardness was measured on the Rockwell F scale. The investigation shows that an increase in pressure promotes a higher density and hardness regardless of pressing temperature, up to a temperature of 400° C. The pressure-density curves at various pressing temperatures are shown in Fig. I, the pressure-hardness curves at various pressing temperatures, in Fig. z. The greatest increase in both hardness and density was obtained in the pressure range of 5 to 20 tons per square inch. A compact from each series was annealed at 300°C. in air, for various lengths of time. The hardness values after annealing are shown in Table I. A minimum hardness was obtained after one hour of annealing. No change in density occurred during annealing. The maximum density was obtained at 80 tons per sq. in., and at this pressure the hardness is equal to that of hard-drawn wrought
