A summary of oil and gas development in Ohio for 1936 is necessarily brief and, in some details incomplete, owing to the lack of a central state agency for the collection of data and statistics on well drilling and production. The information used in this report was compiled from the records of the several companies operating in the state. Drilling activity in Ohio increased during 1936 as compared to the two preceding years. During the year 1157 wells were completed, as compared to 1022 wells in 1935 and 1055 wells in 1934. However, in spite of this increase in drilling activity, both oil and gas production declined for the year. Activity by Fields Trenton Sand Field.—The Trenton sand field is located in 15 counties of northwestern Ohio, trending from Toledo on the north, south and west through Findlay into Indiana. About 40 years ago the Trenton field was one of the most important oil-producing fields in the United States, but it has declined to a position of minor importance. During the year 1936 there were 52 completions in this field—29 gas wells, 19 oil wells and 4 dry holes. Clinton Sand Field.—The Clinton sand is by far the most important gas-producing field in the state. Production is located in small pools separated by nonproducing areas, on a band of varying width reaching from Cleveland on the north to Lawrence County on the Ohio River on the south. During 1936 a small pool of patchy character was developed in Butler township, Knox County. Seventeen wells were completed in the Clinton sand, of which 13 were gas wells and 4 were dry holes. The average initial production secured per well drilled, including dry holes, was 1,288,000 cu. ft. The average depth of the Clinton sand was 3000 feet. A gas well was completed in lot 9 of Franklin township, Tuscarawas County. Production was found in the first Clinton sand at a depth of 4354 ft. THE North Texas district presented in this paper includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Knox, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger and Young. It corresponds with the Texas Railroad Commission's district No. 9. Table I conforms with the nomenclature of pools as designated by the Commission. Most of the oil and gas produced in this region, generally referred to as the Red River uplift, comes from the Pennsylvanian strata. In recent years, however, increasing amounts are being developed in both the Mississippian and Ordovician.

Problems involved in applying wet scrubbers to gas cleaning coal dust from thermal dryers are reviewed. Careful consideration of all the elements going into a modem coal preparation plant is required in view of the increasing difficulty of applying suitable gas cleaning equipment. This problem arises not only from the presence of finer coals to be handled, but also from the pressures applied by both the general population and the plant operators to improve the standard of gas cleaning performance. The Peabody scrubber is presented by the author as a machine designed to help improve this cleaning operation. Wet scrubbing of fine coal from thermal dryers poses a number of problems in adapting the gas cleaning equipment to the fine particulate matter. Among them are: 1) Dust in gases leaving the thermal dryer cyclones is often extremely fine with high percentages of total dust loading less than 1p in size. 2) Flue gas entering the scrubber is corrosive since the coal fired in the thermal dryer furnace is in the range of 0.7% by weight sulfur or higher. Therefore, comparatively high cost stainless steel alloys or corrosion resistant linings are required for a satisfactory service life. 3) Requirements for residual coal loadings leaving the gas scrubber are continually being lowered, while modern coal preparation operation is imposing heavier burdens on the collection system through introduction into the thermal dryer system of very fine coal previously not recovered. The advent of flotation systems in increasing numbers is typical of this trend. 4) Installation of a scrubbing system on thermal dryers is made primarily to reduce air pollution and product recovery value is of little or no value. Therefore, the operating costs of gas pressure drop and water requirements must be held to a minimum. We have, then, the basic situation which calls for comparatively high cost stainless steel alloy wet scrubbers, which must be highly effective in removing coal fines particularly in the 0 to 5-p size range. Further, the standards of scrubber performance are continually being raised towards the level where gas discharged from the scrubbers must be essentially free of any coloration due to residual dust. In view of the highly refractive nature of fine coal dust, residual loadings of 0.01 grains per cu ft or less are required to provide a color free discharge gas. In the present specifications under consideration a residual coal loading of 0.05 grains per cu ft would be considered color free, since the discharge gases are saturated in the range of 150°F. The steam plume acts as a masking agent at the point of discharge, and upon dissipation of the 150° saturated vapor stream, the effluent gas stream could be essentially color free. The specification under consideration calls for residual solids loading of 0.05 or less grains per cu ft, given a coal size distribution shown in the basic data in Table I. It is noted that the dust laden coal stream has a size distribution by weight of 33% in the 2 to 5-p size range and 55% in the 0 to 2-p size range. The importance of having perfectly pure metals has led me to present to the lnstitute a record of some of the trials that have been made to obtain these metals, and also to show one of the largest specimens of extremely thin metal plate which has ever been made. The malleability of metals varies generally directly with their purity, and hence it is only with very pure metals that thin sheets can be obtained. The competition among different manufacturers has been so great at times as to lead to expensive and apparently useless experiments in obtaining in the first instance very thin sheets, and afterwards very large and thin sheets of metal, apparently with no other purpose than that of being able to say that they had produced the thinnest or the largest thin sheet that had ever been made. These experiments were at first confined exclusively to iron, their object being to show the great dexterity of manipulation, as well as the purity of the metal manufactured. They have since been extended to almost all metals by electrical action, and have gone far beyond the limits of what was possible with purely mechanical means. The processes which have been used are rolling or hammering, electrical deposition in a vacuum, and lastly, electrical deposition on plates, easily soluble in acids. The first and last of these methods have been known and practiced for a very long time, having been used to make thin sheets of almost all the metals. The other is of quite recent application. In the iron manufacture, the strife to produce these thin sheets was commenced in the year 1865, by the Sligo Iron Works writing to a firm in Birmingham, England, on a sheet of iron containing 270 square centimeters, and weighing only 4.469 grams. For some time this was considered to be the thinnest sheet iron that could be made. T. W. Booker & Co., of Cardiff, England, however, produced a few months afterward, a sheet of the same size, weighing only 4.015 grams. This was succeeded by one rolled by Neville and Everitt, of Llannelly, weighing only 3.174 grams. The stability regions of the normal sulfate and the various basic sulfates of lead in 02-SO2 and PhS-SO2 gas atmospheres were calculated from available thermodynamic data over the temperature range 600o to 1200oC. Roasting experiments were carried out on samples of synthetic lead sulfide at various temperatures and for various roasting times. Compounds in the oxidized surface layers were identified by X-my techniques. The order in which the various reactions occurred was determined by considering the experimental results in conjunction with the thermodynamic calculations. The results of these investigations were applied to the sintering of lead sulfide concentrates, and the extent to which each of the various reactions occurred in a sinter bed was determined. PRODUCTS which may be formed during the roasting of PbS are PbS04, PbSO4. PbO, PbSO4 . 2PbO, PbSO4 . 4PbO, PbO, and Pb.1, 2 The formation of some sulfates has been studied by a number of investigators3-' whose experiments have mostly been confined to the temperature range between 500" and 850°C. Culver, Gray, and spooner3 were able to isolate the reactions which formed PbSO4 and PbSO4. PbO by carefully controlling the compositions of the roasting gases. The kinetics of these reactions were studied within the temperature range 673" to 807°C. Gardner4 and Merrick5 also studied the kinetics of oxidation of PbS. Gardner disregarded the existence of basic sulfates and, as a result, misinterpreted some of his experimental data. Merrick recognized that most of the products of oxidation were mixtures of basic sulfates, but was unable to identify the individual components. Hoschek6 oxidized PbS in air at temperatures up to 800°C. The products were analyzed after roasting had proceeded for some minutes, but no attempt was made to follow the reactions in the initial stages. Consequently, no roasting mechanism was derived. He also showed that PbSO4 and PbSO4 - 4PbO decomposed slowly in air at temperatures in the region of 800°C. The stability regions of sulfates in the temperature range 500" to 850°C have been only partially determined, while practically no information is available for higher temperatures. In the lead sintering process, PbS concentrates are roasted at temperatures within the range 1000o to 1200°C. In order to investigate sulfate formation, it is necessary to determine the effects of temperature and gas composition upon the various oxidation reactions and upon the regions of stability of the various lead sulfates. In June 1964 the Indiana Geological Survey discovered gypsum beds more than 10 ft thick in rocks of Devonian age in La Porte County, Ind. Although the extension of the Michigan Basin evaporites into northern Indiana has been recognized for some time, the gypsum beds have been regarded as either too thin or too deep for exploitation. Current Survey research, however, indicates that exploration by industry might find commercial deposits of gypsum less than 50 miles from Chicago. In four cores taken by the Survey within 1 sq mile in La Porte County, the maximum thickness of inter-bedded gypsum and anhydrite is 35.8 ft. Both gypsum and anhydrite beds contain irregular masses of limestone and dolomite that average a few inches in cross section and total about 20% of the rock by weight. The maximum thickness of gypsum in one minable unit verified by core is 12.5 ft, and its purity is 81.3%. Chloride content of the gypsum beds is less than 0.005%. Depth to the gypsum in La Porte County is 330 to 500 ft, about the same depth as the gypsum being mined in Martin County, Ind. In June 1964 the Indiana Geological Survey discovered gypsum deposits of probable commercial thickness near La Porte, Ind. (Fig. 1). This article presents preliminary data on the distribution, thickness, depth and chemical composition of the gypsum, the possible causes of gypsification, and economic considerations of immediate interest to industry. Because of the preliminary nature of the work, only a few geologic relationships concerning the genesis of the deposits will be mentioned. DEFINITIONS The following terms used throughout this article have been restricted to the following definitions: evaporites: anyydrite (CaSO4) or gypsum (CaSO4 . 2H2O). minable evaporites: any evaporite unit which may contain more than 80% evaporites, which is more than 10 ft thick, and which in places may be completely gypsified. PREVIOUS WORK The presence of gypsum and anhydrite in the Devonian rocks of northern Indiana has been recognized for at least 70 years1-4 and can be inferred from a number of reports on the geology of Michigan. The mixed homogeneous and heterogeneous kinetics of the thermal decomposition of tungsten hexacarbonyl were studied by employing a batch reactor. The system was such that a sample of tungsten hexacarbonyl could be injected into the preheated reactor, and the progress of the reaction followed by a simple pressure measurement. Both the homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions were found to be first order, and approximate activation energies were determined for each reaction. It is shown that the dis-proportionation of carbon monoxide to give carbon and carbon dioxide cannot be the source of carbon in tungsten deposits prepared by this reaction. The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of tungsten hexacarbonyl have been investigated as part of a continuing study by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on the decomposition of organometallic compounds. Reactions involving the thermal decomposition of metal carbonyls have a potential application in the preparation of pure metals and fine metal powders. Indeed, it was these applications which provided the impetus for much of the early work involving the carbonyls of nickel1 and iron.' The relative lack of study of other metal carbonyls can be traced to the comparative difficulty in synthesizing these compounds. The most common use for tungsten hexacarbonyl has been as an intermediate in vapor-phase plating.7'8 However, attempts to obtain a carbon-free deposit of tungsten by this method have not been successful, and some investigators have taken advantage of the carbon contamination and used this process to form tungsten carbide deposits.lo Other investigators have studied the thermodynamic properties11"14 and molecular structure of tungsten hexacarbonyl. However, very little is known about the kinetics of this thermal decomposition, the mechanisms involved," or the source of carbon in the resulting plate. In contrast, studies have been made of the kinetics of the thermal decomposition of nickel tetracarbonyl, iron pentacarbonyl, and molybdenum hexacarbonyl.'l It has been found that these thermal decompositions occur by a mechanism which is partially heterogeneous in nature. Information available on the equilibrium constants for the decomposition of tungsten hexacarbonyl was used to determine a temperature range, 500" to 560°K, in which the reaction could be expected to be essentially complete. APPARATUS The apparatus used allowed the injection of a sample of tungsten hexacarbonyl into a preheated batch reactor and the use of a simple pressure measurement to follow the progress of the reaction in the sealed reactor. The pressure was sensed by means of a pressure transducer (Consolidated Electrodynamics Corp., 0.3 pct)* capable of operating at the *Reference to specific products is made to facilitate understanding and does not imply endorsement of such brands by the Bureau of Mines._______ reaction temperature. This type of sensing element was chosen to avoid the problem of condensation of the sublimed carbonyl in the capillary tubing leading to any type of remote pressure-sensing device. stirring was provided by rotating the entire apparatus. Glass beads placed in the reactor provided a pulsating agitation. To minimize thermal gradients in the reactor walls, the reactor was constructed of aluminum. The support tube which held the reactor in the furnace was thin-walled stainless steel to minimize heat conduction out of the reactor. As a result of these measures, a nearly uniform temperature (°C) was maintained throughout the reactor. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of the apparatus. The small gear motor rotated the entire apparatus at about 200 rpm. The bearings shown at the ends of the air cylinder were perforated to allow air to be fed to the charging piston and to allow inert gas to be fed to the reactor during the preheating period. The sample was simultaneously injected and sealed inside the reactor by operation of the air piston. Fig. 2 shows a cross section of the air cylinder and the adjoining portion of the support tube leading to the reactor. The sample carrier is shown in place at the right-hand end of the injection rod extending from the air piston. The piston is shown in the retracted position, as it would be prior to the start of an experiment. The small Teflon gasket which encircled the sample carrier at the end of the injection rod sealed the reactor when the sample was injected. This seal was maintained throughout the test by maintaining air pressure on the piston. The sample carrier was a 2-in. section of thin-walled, -in.-diam nickel tubing with an internal blank about 1 in. from the base and with the base end sealed.

It was recently reported' that the initial transformation in (100) iron whiskers grown in the bcc condition can be nucleated on heating in regions of the whisker which are not necessarily the hottest. Although this behavior was observed1 several times, its sporadic nature precluded any documentation other than occasional visual observations during hot-stage optical-microscope heating experiments. The purpose of this communication is to report how, in one instance, the a-y transformation in such a (100) iron whisker was initiated in a region which was clearly at a lower temperature than an adjacent region which did not transform at all.

A data-classification scheme was developed to detect potential uranium mineralization in the Montrose l º x 2º quadrangle, Colorado. The methodology developed is a rapid and efficient method of resource evaluation on a reconnaissance scale. The necessary techniques were developed and refined to digitize, integrate, and register various large geological, geochemical, and geophysical data sets for the Montrose quadrangle, Colorado, using a grid resolution of 1 km. All data sets for the Montrose quadrangle were registered to the Universal Trans- verse Mercator projection. The data sets include hydrogeochemical and stream sediment analyses for 23 elements, uranium-to-thorium ratios, airborne geo- physical survey data, the locations of 90 uranium occurrences, and a geologic map (scale 1:250 000). Geochemical samples were collected from 3965 locations in the 19 200 km2 quadrangle; aerial data were collected on flight lines flown with 3-5 km spacings. These data sets were smoothed by universal kriging and interpolated to a 179 x 119 rectangular grid (each grid block is 1 km2). A mylar transparency of the geologic map was prepared and digitized. All possible combinations of three, for all data sets, were examined for general geologic correlations by utilizing a color microfilm output. Subsets of data were further examined for selected test areas. A classification scheme for uranium mineralization, based on selected test areas in the Cochetopa uranium district, is presented. Areas favorable for uranium mineralization, based on this scheme, were identified and are discussed.

The coal-measures of George's Creek coal-region, in Maryland, lie in a comparatively flat synclinal basin, about 4 miles wide. The dip of the measures is, in places near the edge of the basin, as much as 20 feet in 100. The Pittsburgh seam, known locally as the " Big Vein," is the only seam worked at the present time. Ocean No. 3, one of the large mines of the Consolidation Coal Company, has its opening on the outcrop of the Pittsburgh seam, in a ravine which cuts into this seam to such an extent as to bring this opening to within a mile of the axis of the basin. After working all the coal to the rise of this point, the mine was further developed by extending a slope down the dip of the seam, making such an angle with the line of greatest dip as to give a grade varying from 1 to 10 per cent., down which the empty cars carry a rope from a single-drum winding-engine. The coal was worked from each side of this slope in successive Iifts during its progress. From the top of the slope, for a distance of 4000 feet to the fourth lift, the " make " of water is drained by gravity through a heading into the adjoining mine. Below this point the water was pumped into this same heading, at the fourth lift, from which point, as before mentioned, it flowed by gravity.

The major problems confronting us during this past year were: 1) Financing the new Engineering Center. 2) Keeping our three almost autonomous societies working together and toward a stronger AIME. 3) Cooperation with other engineering societies the Functional Plan. 4) Licensing and registration, and the Model Law. 5) The reorganization of the Council of Section Delegates. 6) Combatting the slump in the appeal of engineering to the young students.

Anomalous geological features in the coal and surrounding strata of a mine in northern West Virginia have fractured and deformed an inherently weak roof rock prior to mining. Horizontal stresses, as much as six times greater than overburden related horizontal stresses, have induced cutter roof failure. This failure was distinguishable from rock deformation associated with geological anomalies because it was induced by mining. The characterization of these features has allowed for the prediction of zones of unstable roof rock and the determination of failure trends on gateroad stability. Geological anomalies included clastic dikes and a narrow zone of sandstone roof. Clastic dikes, representing intrusions of shale and claystone, were invariably accompanied by local roof rock instability, and often formed the boundaries of roof falls. Shale was the dominant roof lithology except where a small sandstone occurred in the northwest portion of the longwall mining area. The sandstone occurs in two phases: a sandstone-filled channel, 5-m- thick and 60-m-wide, which eroded and replaced the shale roof and the upper part of the coalbed; and a sheet sandstone unit which was crossbedded to interbedded with the underlying shale. Horizontal stresses are naturally relieved through the initiation of cutter roof failure. This failure may extend from a few meters to several tens of meters horizontally, and from a few centimeters to several meters vertically. Orientations of entries and crosscuts has a greater influence on the direction and total length of cutter roof failure at the rib-roof intersection than does the principal directions of the in situ horizontal stresses. Seventy-four percent of the cutter roof failures occurred along the rib-roof intersection. Orientations of cutter roof failure away from the rib- roof intersection were clustered in the north-south direction and may have been influenced by the horizontal stress field.

The author reveals the effect of geological formations, iron content of ore, accessability, cost of transportation, political and economic considerations. Ore beds of importance to the German iron and steel industry are given more space than others. The bibliography contains almost 250 references. A tragic comic feature is the author's complaint that as soon as a map of iron ore resources of a country has been completed, the country's boundaries are changed. Reviewed by W. FOR a number of years, the Department of Petroleum Economics of The Chase National Bank has been conducting a study of the capital employed in the petroleum industry. The technique followed is that of combining and summarizing the available financial and operating data for a group of thirty representative oil companies, doing about two thirds of the domestic business of the entire industry. This paper presents the results of the findings for the year 1943, and supplements the survey, "Sources, Disposition, and Characteristics of the Capital Employed by Thirty Oil Companies During the Nine-Year Period, 1934-1942," presented before the Petroleum Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers on Feb. 24, 1944, and also published as a pamphlet by The Chase National Bank.

PORE formation during solidification has recently been studied theoretically by Piwonka and Flemings.1 For the ordinary conditions of cellular solidification, these authors state that there is a difficulty in explaining the formation of pores. The difficulty arises because the conditions necessary for pore formation are not those obtained during cellular growth. Therefore Piwonka and Flemings1 had to examine various unusual possibilities in order to explain the apparent presence of pores in a cellular substructure of aluminum, taken from Doherty.2 For aluminum, Doherty and Davis3 have developed a pitting technique to reveal substructure, which depends upon the condensation of vacancies from supersaturated solution after quenching. This technique as further developed4 was used to study solidification substructures. In the case of striations, delineation of the substructure is produced by the absence of surface pitting after quenching: in the vicinity of the striations the dislocations which constitute this substructure are sinks for vacancies. In the case of the cellular substructure the experimentally observed effect is the same. However, in this latter case Doherty and Davis4 suggested that micropores associated with the cellular substructure were the agent responsible for providing sinks for vacancies. This interpretation seemed necessary for the cellular substructure because no misorientation arising from a dislocation array could be observed. Careful estimates indicate that during 1942 new discoveries and extensions in West Central Texas added oil reserves slightly in excess of the eight million barrels produced. Drilling activity fell 40 per cent below 1941 and 82 per cent below the normal drilling activity of the late 1920's. Total production for the district continued its downward trend, now being less than % of the 42.7 million barrels peak in 1921. Rapid revival of activity is not probable under existing conditions, as costs of discovery, development and operations on the average probably now exceed current market price for the oil, the latter having remained constant since the spring of I941. Costs have advanced materially since the third quarter of 1941, when reports to the Tariff Commission indicated a margin of profit of 13.3 per barrel. Physical as well as economic conditions are holding back the amount of drilling in this district. The lenticular sands are not suited to 40-acre spacing regulations. There is no surplus of experienced oil-field labor. To reduce costs, much second-hand material is used for all except the deeper wells.. Price controls have retarded movement of used equipment by prescribing maximum prices that arc too low for the better grade materizl, thus making , owners reluctant to sell. On the other hand, buyers are unwilling to pay ceiling prices asked by sellers for poor material. Seventeen new oil fields and five new gas fields were found during 1942. Extensions and deeper 'drilling brought favorable results in eight older fields. The most significant new developments appear to have been in Coleman, Jones, Shackelford and Taylor Counties. A 5800-ft. completion in Wise County brought this county into the producing column for the first time. None of these new discoveries can he rated above one million barrel reserve on the basis of present development. Probably the most important development was discovery of a deeper pay (Gunsight lime) in the Wimberly field of Jones County, which shows promise of producing over an area of about 1000 acres. Jones and Shackelford Counties still lead the district in total annual production. Discovery of the Reddin pool, north central Taylor County, is credited to geochemical methods, making one success out of five or more wildcats based on such methods. Geophysical surveying increased decidedly during 1942 and returns from these studies are expected during coming years. Most of the wildcatting in the district is still based on surface and subsurface geological structural mapping, study of log data as to distribution of prospective producing reservoirs, and drilling in proximity to previous showings of oil and gas. Geological debate continues as to the proper correlation of the 100 to 300 ft. of gray lime that has produced more than 100 million barrels in the Parks, Brecken-ridge, Curry, Eliasville, Ibex, Pioneer and other important fields of this district. Fossils indicate that this limestone is younger than the Atoka beds of Oklahoma. On a structural basis most geologists include this formation with the Bend but a number of paleontologists believe it is more properly classified with the Strawn.
