The number of wells completed in Ohio during I940 was about 20 per cent more than during the preceding year, the comparative totals being 1020 and 1228. Of the 1940 completions, 327 were oil wells, 491 gas wells, and 410 dry. The completions for the past five years, divided into oil wells, gas wells, and dry holes, are shown in Table 2. Wells drilled deeper and input wells in water-flood areas are not included in the tabulation. The annual production of oil has decreased steadily in Ohio from the maximum of 23,941,000 bbl. produced in 1896. Table 3 shows the quantities of oil produced in the last five years. In 1940, the total was 3,052,000 bbl., produced by about 25,500 wells. The number of wells and the approximate quantities by grades are shown in Table I. The production of natural gas in 0hio has declined from a maximum of 79,510,032 M cu. ft. in I9I5 S to 36,469,000 M cu. ft. in 1939, the most recent year for which a figure is available. Consumption reached its peak in Ohio in the year 1916, when it was 169,480,01r M cu. ft., declining to 114,720,ooo M CU. ft. in 1939. The X-ray Kossel-line method has been used preaioz~sly for measuring lattice parameters to accuracies of 1 part in 100,000.5 A second application of this method is described for determining the crystallographic orientation of a randomly positioned single-crysta1 spherical volume that can he as small as 50 µ in diameter, within accuracy limits of ±1/2 deg. The theory, experimental procedure, and interpretation of Kossel-line patterns and an experimenta1 verification of the predicted orientation relationship of the cph k and fee a Cu-Si phases are presented. This orientation relationship can be described as (111)a, (00.1)k; [110]a [11.0]k. In addition, the lattice parameter of the a phase was found to he a. = 3.62154 ± 0.00014Å. The Kossel-line method when used in conjunction with electron microanalysis is shown to he capable of providing a complete chemical and structural analysis of a given crystal. THE most easily accomplished methods for determining the orientation of a single crystal are variations of the Laue X-ray diffraction method. Although certain materials can be oriented to within ± 1 deg accuracy by observation of exterior macroscopic features, such as etch pits, cleavage faces, or growth features, the Laue method is generally preferred for routine laboratory application. Both back-reflection and transmission patterns are coordinated by appropriate reference charts and are plotted in terms of reflection plane poles (normals) on a stereographic projection. Orientation is deduced by relating the pole distribution (which is fixed by the crystallographic symmetry of the specimen) to two specified external reference directions. The Laue method has several limitations. 1) Orientation can rarely be determined to better than ±l deg accuracy. Principal errors involve inaccuracy in specimen-to-film distance, measurement confidence of individual Laue spots, and stereographic plotting. 2) Because of the indeterminacy of the X-ray wave length diffracted to a given spot, it is not possible to determine supplementary crystallographic data, such as interplanar spacings and lattice parameters. 3) The method is generally limited to specimens of cubic symmetry or to specimens of high symmetry and known structure. 4) The relatively large cross-sectional area of the incident X-ray beam generally precludes the measurement of relative grain orientation in a polycrystalline material.* _____ Several of these limitations can be overcome by application of the Kossel-line method, which has been previously employed for precision lattice-parameter determinations.'-= For this method, a point source of divergent monochromatic X-rays is generated within the crystal by means of an incident electron beam. The divergent X-rays which fulfill the Bragg law are diffracted by the specimen and are recorded on a film placed either in transmission or back reflection. Analysis of the film yields a direct measurement of orientation and lattice-spacing values to an accuracy of ±1/2 pct. As analyses can be obtained from spherical specimen volumes as small as 50 µ in diameter, the method provides a means for structural analysis of second-phase or impurity precipitates within a given matrix. The primary limitation of the Kossel-line method is the requirement for an electron microanalyzer or similar apparatus capable of producing a finely focused electron beam. This paper is designed to present the theory, experimental procedure, and geometrical interpretation of Kossel patterns. The experimentally determined orientation relationship between the k and a phases occurring in the Cu-Si system and a precision measurement of the a lattice parameter are presented as a practical application of the method. THEORY OF KOSSEL LINES Divergent X-ray beam photography utilizes an effective point source of characteristic X-rays which, when diffracted from a single crystal, form numerous diffraction and absorption cones that are recorded on film.7 The cones generated from a source lying within the crystal are called Kossel lines.' Although the X-ray scattering from a divergent point source contained within a crystal is described in terms of Laue dynamical theory,9 the directions of the diffracted spectra can be ade-

The shaft-plant here described was put in operation in September, 1895, and the No. 6 slope-motor was started in May, 1896. The plant comprises : One Norwalk three-stage compressor l21/2, 91/2 and 5 in. diameters of air- and 20 in. diameter of steam-cylinder, all 24 in. stroke; capacity at 100 revolutions, 296 cu. ft. of free air per minute, compressed to 600 Ibs. per sq. in. A main pipe, 5 in. diameter, 4380 ft. long, with five charging-stations in No. 6 Shaft, and a branch of 3 in. pipe, 3100 ft. long, with three charging stations, in No. 6 Slope. These pipes on each line charge a Porter compressed-air motor, with 7 by 14 in. cylinders, and four 24 in. drivers, weighing about eight tons, with a tank-capacity of 130 cu. ft. of air at 550 lbs. pressure in the main tank, reduced to 160 lbs. in the 8-in. auxiliary tank of 4.2 cu. ft. capacity, supplying the cylinders. The No. 6 shaft run averages 4000 ft. each way on grades of $ to 23/4 per cent., and averaging close to one per cent. in favor of the loaded cars. The No. 6 slope run averages 2100 ft. with nearly the same grades. The mine-cars weigh 2800 Ibs. empty, and about 9800 lbs. loaded, and are hauled in trips of 12 to 20, averaging about 15 cars. The shaft-motor now hauls about 355, and the slope-motor 320 cars per day of 10 hours, replacing in the shaft 17 mules, and

The steam soak process is the most widely applied and most successful thermal supplemental recovery process in use today. This process, which consists of injection of steam in various quantities into a well that is subsequently used as a producer, can be repeatedly applied to the same well. The treatment, if successful, will increase the production rate of the well for a given period. For this reason, the steam soak process should be considered primarily as an acceleration method rather than as a method for producing oil that could not be recovered by primary means. However, application of this process to reservoirs containing viscous crude may produce oil that otherwise would have zero present value or would be produced at such low rates by primary methods that it would not be profitable. A major necessity for the successful application of the steam soak process is a source of natural energy. This source of energy may exist in one or more of the following forms: expansion of fluids, compaction, gravity drainage. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of gravity drainage on steam soak production and recovery and to develop a method for predicting production rates, ultimate recovery, and heat requirements when applying this process to a reservoir in which the primary driving mechanism is gravity drainage. (For additional discussion of some of the factors that affect recovery of viscous oils by the steam soak process, see Ref. 5.) Model The model developed for analyzing the performance of the steam soak process in gravity drainage reservoirs is a modified form of that developed by Matthews and Lefkovits.1,2 The model used in this study consists of two concentric cylindrical volumes of productive formation with cap and base rock of impermeable material. The inner cylinder, extending from the radius of the wellbore to some predetermined radius, is referred to as the hot zone; and the outer cylinder extending from the exterior boundary of the hot zone to the outer drainage boundary will be referred to as the partially heated zone. Fig. 1 is a schematic cross-section of the model, indicating its thermal properties. Horizontally the reservoir is divided into two regions, the upper region having a high gas saturation and residual liquid saturation, and the lower region containing a high liquid saturation. The boundary between these two regions is referred to as the free surface, which drops and changes shape as fluid is produced from the reservoir. The model was used to analyze the steam soak process by applying the following assumptions: 1. The horizontal formation is composed of one or more homogeneous noninterconnected layers containing incompressible fluids. Each layer is treated separately. 2. The hot zone is heated by the initial soak and is maintained at the steam temperature corresponding to atmospheric pressure by resoaking. 3. Several correlations have been proposed to relate energy consumption and size reduction in comminution, and although these are arrived at from different starting points, it is postulated that they are all statements of the same basic concept. To test this postulate, the dry ball mill grindability of langbeinite was determined, and the results were analyzed according to the various methods. An examination ' of the energy-particle size relationships proposed in the recent past revealed that they had much in common. In fact, the conclusion was tentatively drawn that these expressions were essentially the same, even though they were arrived at from quite different basic premises. The equations attributed to Charles2 and Holmes3 were shown to re- duce to the same single equation, W - A K-3, and the simulated continuous test used by Maxson et al.4 was shown to give the best experimental value of the required empirical parameter, ß. Furthermore, the size distribution parameter a in the Schuhmann equation, y - (x/K)2, was shown to be equal to ß in many cases. The kinetic approach used by Arbiter and Bhrany5 should give the same results as the Maxson test procedure; however, the batch operation used by Arbiter and Bhrany could not produce data that would be as precise as the simulated continuous technique. To test the validity of these conclusions, the simulated continuous method was used to obtain data on the dry grinding of langbeinite. The results are discussed in terms of the various equations and approaches. THE present investigation was planned as a survey of the lead-rich portion of the ternary lead-antimony-silver system by thermal analysis. Since, however, a rigorous application of the conventional thermal analytical method is time consuming, an attempt was made to speed up the investigation by reducing the time required for a single thermal analysis. This was done by increasing the rate of cooling to 12° to 18°C. per minute, since such a rate does not permit even an approach to equilibrium conditions, the melt was stirred vigorously by a stirrer operating at the high rate of 665 r.p.m. This proved to be effective in obtaining cooling curves with distinct points of arrest and of excellent reproducibility, which satisfactorily compare with those obtained at a rate of 1" to 2°C. per min. with or without slow stirring (Fig. I). By this method the lead-rich end of the lead-alltimony system and a series of ternary alloys in sections parallel to the lead-antimony side of the ternary system were investigated and it was observed that the two branches of the liquidus curve of the binary alloys did not intersect at the euteotic temperature. An equivalent effect mas observed in the ternary system. The eutectic temperature of the binary lead-antimony system was found to be 252.0°C., which confirms the recent in- vestigation by Pellini and Rhines,1 who determined the eutectic temperature to be 2 51.5°C. The observation that the curves of primarY crystallization of the lead-antimony system do not intersect at the eutectic temperature was previously made by Dean.2 Dean explains the phenomeilon by assuming the existence of a compound Sb4pb. He felt that supercooling was not the cause of the phenomena because he was unable to influence them by inoculation. The X-ray investigation by Solomon and Morris-Jones,3 the metallographic investigations by Stead,4 Charpy,5 Gontermann,6 and Dean, Zickrick and Nix,7 and the numerous investigations of physical properties, definitely disprove the occurrence of any compound. The work of Dean was not confirmed by Broniewski and Sliwoski,8 whose experiments did not show any irregularity and who report a eutectic composition of 13 per cent antimony and a eutectic temperature Of 2500 to 252°C. at a rate Of coo1ing of about 6°C. Per min. Abell Redlich and Adler9 then report a eutectic composition of 12.1 per cent upon reviewing the previous publications and adding a few of their own cooling curves. In 1934 Quadrat and Jiriste10 found from careful analyses of the bottom portion of slowly cooled hypereutectic melts that the eutectic only 11 .4 to 11.5 per cent antimany. The performance of the nine 5.5 m diameter x 6.4 m mills (18 x 21 ft) initially installed at Bougainville Copper Ltd. did not meet the laboratory and pilot plant derived design expectations as measured by Bond Work Index. During the post-commissioning period, inefficient grinding of coarse material resulted in a build-up of large circulating loads and led to reduced throughputs because of pump and cyclone overloading. Installation of larger pumps and cyclones and development of an improved circuit control philosophy alleviated materials handling problems and permitted higher tonnages to be attained. Since 1977, plant throughput has been increased by installation of three additional mills. These are 0.9 m (2.9 ft) longer than the other nine and have a higher capacity. Developments in classification and mill speed-up, together with a finer ball mill feed size and substantial improvements to mill availability (99% in 1982) have further increased plant capacity. There is a continuing emphasis on improving grinding circuit efficiency in terms of throughput/grind. Current development work includes trials of graded ball charges, different liner profiles, and assessment of scalping/regrind proposals.

In 1956 the discovery of nickel on Jumbo Mountain, Snohomish County, Washington, focused attention on this part of the Cascade Range, far more renowned for its timber than for its mineral resources. Hand specimens assaying as high as 13 pct Ni encouraged Discovery Mines Inc. of Mount Vernon, Wash., to stake 12 claims in Township 31 North, Range 9 East of the Willamette Meridian. The property was leased to Climax Molybdenum Co. in January 1957. Trenching, sampling, and geologic studies were carried out during the late summer of 1957 when most of the snow had disappeared. Although the deposits are only about four miles south of the logging town of Darrington and about two miles. as the crow flies, southeast of the end of a good gravel road from that town, all camp supplies and equipment were air-dropped, owing to the extremely rugged nature of the terrain. GEOLOGY The rocks of Jumbo Mountain comprise a series of folded Tertiary sediments forming a belt one half to three quarters of a mile wide, trending northwest about parallel to the strike of the beds. This belt is sandwiched between two extensive in-trusives—gabbro on the northeast and quartz dio-rite on the southwest—and has been intruded by dikes of fresh and serpentinized dunite. Shear zones follow many of the dunite-sedimentary rock contacts, and in these the nickel mineralization is concentrated. A few transverse faults offset the sediments and ultrabasics. Sedimentary Rocks: Two kinds of quartzite make up the greater part of the sedimentary section. One is dark purplish gray, very fine-grained, and thin-bedded; the other is light gray to white, medium-grained, and well-bedded. Locally the light-colored quart lites contain grit and conglomerate horizons, rich in pebbles of white chert and very fine-grained quartzite. Intercalations of dark argillites near the summit of the mountain give many of the cliffs a striking banded appearance. Dark gray to black, aphanitic, thin-bedded argillites occur throughout the entire sedimentary belt. Beds vary from a few inches to a few tens of feet thick and some, near the summit, contain numerous fossile (willow?) leaves. Only the thicker beds were mapped. The sediments are quite fresh on the northeastern side of the belt and become more metamorphosed (hornfelsed) toward the southwestern side. Brown biotite is present in the metasediments in increasing amounts as the quartz diorite is approached. Near the intrusion, porphyroblasts of plagioclase, up to 1 in. across, testify to the soaking of sedimentary rocks by solutions emanating from the quartz diorite. Most of the sediments mapped lie along the southwestern limb of an anticline, the axis of which follows the crest of the mountain and plunges at a low angle to the northwest.

X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination of binary Mn-rich alloys with Ti revealed the presence of intermediate phases in this system. A binary R phase has been identified and also a phase having an a-Mn type structure. The X-ray pattern of the phase TiMn3 is presented and a tentative phase diagram for the Mn-rich portion of this binary system has been constndcted. MANGANESE-rich alloys with titanium have been subjected to thermal analysis at temperatures down to 1100°C by Hellawell and Hume-Rothery.1 Their results indicate the existence of an intermediate phase TiMn3 in this binary system. This phase appears to coexist with the Laves phase TiMn2, and with terminal solid solutions based on the allotropes of manganese, at least down to 1100°C. The above investigators did not attempt to determine the crystal structure of this phase, however. Since, by analogy to the binary systems Mn-V and Mn-Cr3 one might expect to find a phase in this region of the diagram, it seemed desirable to obtain X-ray diffraction patterns of alloys in the concentration range in question, in order to ascertain whether the sigma phase or related structures occur. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloys were prepared by arc-melting electrolytic manganese and iodide titanium in a water-cooled copper crucible under a helium atmosphere. Excess manganese was added to each melt in order to allow for losses incurred during melting. The alloys were then wrapped in molybdenum foil and sealed in evacuated quartz tubes for annealing at various temperatures, as shown in Table I, followed by quenching in cold water. Although the inside of the tubes showed evidence for some loss of manganese from the specimen during annealing, there was no evidence of any reaction between the specimen and either the molybdenum foil or the quartz tube at these temperatures. It was later found that the manganese loss was considerably reduced by annealing these alloys in sealed quartz tubes containing one atmosphere of purified argon. As an added precaution the surface of each specimen was ground off before crushing the alloys to -270 mesh powder, using a hardened steel mortar and pestle. X-ray powder patterns were obtained using either FeKa or CrKa radiation in an asymmetrical focusing camera, which gave excellent dispersion of the closely spaced lines. Pictures were also obtained using a Debye camera of 5-cm radius which provided data in the angular region not covered by the focusing camera. The alloy specimens were polished and examined metallographically, using an etchant consisting of 60 pct glycerine, 20 pct nitric acid, and 20 pct hydrofluoric acid. The 10-g buttons were in each case broken in half and found to be well-melted and free of any gross segregation. One half of certain alloy buttons was submitted to chemical analysis in the "as-cast" condition. No appreciable change in composition seemed to occur during annealing . RESULTS The X-ray pattern of alloy Ti1.17Mn0.83 was found to agree well with that of the ternary R phase which was first found in the Mo-Cr-Co system,' and re-

The trend in gas well testing has been to rely more on the early-time flow data of drawdown and buildup tests than on stabilized flow tests. The stabilized testing methods often are not adequate for complicated modern gas reservoirs because many of these reservoirs have extremely low permeabilities and the transient flow period of a well test can last for days or weeks. It has become common to augment the flow capacity of gas wells by hydraulically fracturing their producing formations. In deep reservoirs the induced fractures are generally vertical and tend to follow a single plane of weakness. The presence of a vertical fracture at the wellbore complicates the transient flow behavior of a low permeability gas well. The flow is further complicated when turbulence occurs near the wellbore. Russell and Truittl published transient drawdown solutions for vertically-fractured liquid wells. They developed methods of drawdown and buildup testing utilizing these solutions, which were based on numerical simulation. Clark2 applied the basic Russell-Truitt solutions to analyze fractured water injection wells by falloff tests. Field examples were given to substantiate the method of analysis. The Russell-Truitt solutions and well testing methods can be extended to gas well flow. Millheim and Cichowicz3 presented the drawdown equations for *Now with Scientific Software Corp., Denver. ideal gas flow, including the effects of formation damage and turbulence. Two actual field cases were presented, both of which exhibited extensive fractures and turbulent flow. For the pressure range of these well tests, the use of ideal gas equations was acceptable. These field cases were significant in being the first published data showing the occurrence of turbulence in fractured gas wells. We, also, observed such cases in practice. Our purpose here is to extend the theory of fractured gas well testing to the flow of real gases. To determine the effects of wellbore storage and turbulence on well test interpretation, we developed a finite-difference model to simulate well test conditions. Since gas wells usually are widely spaced and have high compressibility, the emphasis has been put on the early transient behavior before the effects of the outer boundary are noticeable at the wellbore. The Mathematical Model The geometry of our mathematical model is similar to that used by Prats.4 The well is centered in a circular uniform reservoir. A vertical fracture of infinite flow capacity penetrates the formation and passes through the wellbore. The wellbore itself is not important. Fig. 1 shows a sketch of the problem. THE present investigation was planned as a survey of the lead-rich portion of the ternary lead-antimony-silver system by thermal analysis. Since, however, a rigorous application of the conventional thermal analytical method is time consuming, an attempt was made to speed up the investigation by reducing the time required for a single thermal analysis. This was done by increasing the rate of cooling to 12° to 18°C. per minute. Since such a rate does not permit even an approach to equilibrium conditions, the melt was stirred vigorously by a stirrer operating at the high rate of 665 r.p.m. This proved to be effective in obtaining cooling curves with distinct points of arrest and of excellent reproducibility, which satisfactorily compare with those obtained at a rate of 1° to 2°C. per min. with or without slow stirring (Fig. 1). By this method the lead-rich end of the lead-antimony system and a series of ternary alloys in sections parallel to the lead-antimony side of the ternary system were investigated and it was observed that the two branches of the' liquidus curve of the .binary alloys did not intersect at the eutectic temperature. An equivalent effect was observed in the ternary system. The eutectic temperature of the binary lead-antimony system was found to be 252.0°C., which confirms the recent investigation by Pellini and Rhines,1 who determined the eutectic temperature to be 251.5°C. The observation that the curves of primary crystallization of the lead-antimony system do not intersect at the eutectic temperature was previously made by Dean.2 Dean explains the phenomenon by assuming the existence of a compound Sb4Pb. He felt that super-cooling was not the cause of the phenomena because he was unable to influence them by inoculation. The X-ray investigation by Solomon and Morris-Jones,3. the metallographic investigations by Stead,4 Charpy,5 Gontermann,6 and Dean, Zickrick and Nix,7 and the numerous investigations of physical properties, definitely disprove the occurrence of any compound. The work of Dean was not confirmed by Broniewski and Sliwoski,8 whose experiments did not show any irregularity and who report a eutectic composition of 13 per cent antimony and a eutectic temperature of 250° to 252°C. at a rate of cooling of about 6°C. per min. Abel, Redlich and Adler9 then report a eutectic composition of 12.1 per cent upon reviewing the previous, publications and adding a few of their own cooling curves. In 1934 Quadrat and Jiriste10 found from careful analyses of the bottom portion of slowly cooled hypereutectic melts that the eutectic contains only 11,4 to 11.5 per cent antimony. Continued low prices and restricted markets for crude oil discouraged drilling activity in Illinois oil fields during 1933. Only 36 wells were completed in the state, the smallest number since 1904, and of these the majority were scattered wildcat wells, only 10 having been drilled in producing fields (Table 2). Production was curtailed approximately 40 per cent for the first half of the year. During July, August, and the early part of September there was no restriction on production. On Sept. 8, under the "code of fair competition for the petroleum industry," the quota of allowable production for Illinois was fixed at 12,000 bbl. per day. The state's production in 1933 was 9 per cent less than in 1932. What it would have been had there been no curtailment of production and if economic conditions had permitted a normal amount of cleaning out and repairs to wells, it is not possible to estimate, but it would no doubt have been considerably more than the actual figure. No new pools or new producing horizons were discovered in 1933, but the deepening of a Robinson sand well in Crawford County to the McClosky "sand" horizon (St. Genevieve limestone of the Lower Mississippian) resulted in a production of 3 bbl. per day (Fred Patchel, Savilla Shipman No. 5, NE. 1/4, SW. 1/4, sec. 26, T.6N., R.l3W., deepened from 1122 to 1388 ft., to be tested to the McClosky horizon, and, owing to the rapid variations in porosity within short distances, as shown in the Lawrence County field to the south, one test may not be considered as proving or condemning any large area. The average price of Illinois crude oil in 1933, calculated from the posted prices as published in the Oil and Gas Journal and Oil Weekly, was $0.862 per barrel. This compares with a calculated average price of $1.032 in 1932 and 0.852 in 1931. The total value of Illinois crude oil produced in 1933 obtained by multiplying the average price (0.862) by the total production (4,227,000 bbl.) was $3,643,674. Of the 26 wildcat wells drilled in 1933, only one was drilled on known favorable structure. An AIME transaction by P.L. Allsman (1960), "Analysis of Explosive Action in Breaking Rock," contains many useful concepts applicable to blast design. Of special interest was the derivation of a heave blasting burden formula, which is important in establishing the maximum burden. Unfortunately, its derivation contains a fundamental error and then a compensating one. This formula was: [bImpulse _P d At max =nwuwu where: bmax = maximum burden in m (ft). A= duration of the average detonation pressure in sec. n= 3.1416. w= specific weight of rock in N/m3 (lb per ft3). u= minimum velocity that must be imparted to the rock in m/sec (ft per sec). d= borehole diameter in m (ft).] The derivation used the impulse-momentum principle, with a 0.3 m thick (1 ft thick) radius of rock mass being acted on by an explosive impulse. However, the rock weight was not converted to mass by dividing by the gravitational constant. This mistake can be verified by checking the units in the formula, which resolve into m1/2-sec instead of meters. Adding the gravitational constant corrects this: [P d Atbmax =gu g = gravitational constant equal to 9.81 m/sect (32.2 ft per sec2).] If the minimum velocity is now taken as 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec), as was recommended, excessively large burdens result. Any appropriate rock velocity should be capable of throwing the rock mass a minimum distance so that the swell needed for breakage can occur. Unless the burden is extremely small and the bench height is very high, it is unlikely that a velocity of only 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec) will be sufficient. A review of the literature indicates that average rock velocities observed by camera studies typically range from 15 to 30 m/sec (50 to 100 ft per sec) (duPont deNemours and Co., 1977; Tansey, 1979). On this basis, a minimum rock velocity of about 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) would be expected and not 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per see). When a velocity of 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) is inserted into the corrected formula, the results approximate those of the original formula with a velocity of 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). The Palabora ore consists of two types, a carbonatite containing a low titanium magnetite, and a foskorite containing high titanium magnetite. The latter type also contains substantial quantities of phosphate. These two ore types are separately crushed and are kept separate through copper flotation and magnetic separation, for recovery of magnetite, with the low Ti magnetite being shipped as iron ore. High phosphate tailings are pumped to Foskor, a government-owned phosphate plant nearby. The Palabora plant was originally designed in 1966 for 33, 000 tpd using two 54 in. by 74 in. Allis -Chalmers gyratories; two 7 ft (2. 13 m) standards; four 7 ft shortheads; and six grinding lines, each using one 1,200 hp rod mill and two 1,200 hp ball mills. A fifth short- head and one more grinding line were added later; and with flowsheet improvements, the capacity of the plant was increased to 59, 500 stpd. A further plant expansion involving a third 54 in. primary and two 32 ft by 15 ft (9.75 by 4.6 m) 9,000 hp autogenous mills and another flotation section will bring its capacity to 87,500 stpd in 1977. These two fully autogenous mills are constructed entirely out of doors near the primary crusher, and the ground ore will be pumped a mile to the concentrator by a five-stage pumping system. The Palabora ore is mined with 6, 10, and 12 7d (4.6, 7.6, and 9. 2 cu m) shovels and hauled to the crushers in 110 and 165 st trucks. Sixty-five ton trucks were originally used, but the crusher dump pockets were designed for larger units. Dump pockets, crushers, feeders, and take- away belts are offset in order to keep the two ore types separate. Centerlines of the crushers are only 43 ft (13. 1 m) apart; but, because of their being offset, maintenance room is ample. Initially, more carbonatite ore than foskorite was mined; but as the pit has deepened, this ratio has been reversed. The Palabora ore breaks in the pit with a large amount of oversize boulders; and, with the use of larger trucks, a splitter has been installed on one side of each dump pocket to protect the crusher spider. Smaller trucks dump on the opposite side. To accomodate the splitter, the pocket edge has been raised one meter and moved back one meter. Dust is collected through a special vent shaft between the crushers and the mantle relining area; but even so, two high-pressure water spray headers with nozzles are installed under the edge of the pocket at each dumping position. While only one truck dumps at a time, sprays from all four headers are used to suppress dust. Any leakage of water through the seal around the upper bowl of the crusher is caught by a circular trough under the seal and directed to a sump pump. At this point, there
