PYROPHYLLITE is a hydrous aluminum silicate (A12Si4O10(OH)2)1 that occurs in both the foliated and the massive forms. The foliated variety resembles talc in that it has a greasy feel, a pearly luster, perfect basal cleavage, and usually is white, although in some deposits apple green, gray, brown, russet, and nearly black specimens may be found. The massive deposits of pyrophyllite yield pearl gray to light tan aggregates, some of which are so friable that they may be crushed with the hands into a fine gritty powder. Frequently specimens of the massive variety are studded with crystals of radial structure. The mineral has a specific gravity of about 2.7 and a hardness of 1 on Mohs' scale.1 The chemical composition of commercial pyrophyllite reflects the mineralogy of the deposits, which, according to Stuckey,2 contain pyrophyllite and quartz, together with chloritoid, sericite, and a few other minerals of negligible importance. The latter, he says, "are noticed in but small quantities to the extent they might occur as accessory constituents of an igneous rock or as products of regional metamorphism or weathering. . . . Quartz is abundant everywhere except in the very best grades of pyrophyllite." Analyses of specimens from several deposits are listed in Table 1, showing that the silica content varies from 57 to 73 per cent and the alumina from 22 to 33 per cent. Oxides of iron and the alkaline metals are collectively present, with one exception, to an extent of about 1 to 1.5 per cent. SOURCES At present, North Carolina is the only commercial source of pyrophyllite, although the mineral has been found in small quantities in many parts of the world. Many a geologist or driller has wished he could somehow climb into a borehole to see for himself what fractures looked like. Or why recovery was poor. Or how the bit was actually lost. Now it is possible to do the next best thing to climbing into the hole. TV cameras are being used for a close-up look at borehole conditions. Ever since television was invented, geologists and others interested in subsurface conditions have wanted a TV camera that could be used in the narrow confines of a borehole. But development of such a camera was slow, mainly because of the need for compact size. Not until the late 1950's did the technology of electronic miniaturization develop to a point where a camera satisfactory for the purpose could be put together.

Geostatistics originated as an application of a classical statistical concept, multivariate linear regression, to the solution of a practical problem, estimation of reserves in the South African gold mines. In this respect, geostatistics should only be considered as one statistical method among many that can be used to evaluate mineral deposits. R.F. Shurtz has studied possible applications of power spectrum analysis to the same problem, and these studies may result in future improvements over the presently accepted geostatistical methodology. The intention of R.F. Shurtz's paper, as stated by the author, is to "relate geostatistical doctrine to classical statistical and mathematical concepts." However, in this comparison the "geostatistical doctrine" appears to include only the simplest among the geostatistical concepts advocated by G. Matheron, while "classical statistical and mathematical concepts" are limited nearly exclusively to power spectrum analysis. The author attempts to compare the two methods, and to prove the theoretical superiority of power spectrum analysis. Unfortunately, a number of errors and incorrect statements are made concerning both the theory and application of geostatistics, which invalidate the comparison and the conclusions drawn from it. The errors made in this comparison are understandable since few scientists can claim to have expertise in two theories as diverse as those compared here. In many respects, this paper is reminiscent of polemics which occurred 15 to 20 years ago when geostatistics and trend surface analysis were compared. Each method has its own merit and limitations, and none can claim absolute superiority. The most misleading statements found in R.F. Shurtz's paper are: The definition of the semivariogram given on page 1923 is incorrect. If the maximum difference between two assays is 1, the maximum value of the semivariogram is not 1, as stated, but 0.5. The comparison of geostatistics and linear regression made in the section entitled "Insufficiency of Classical Statistics?" is not valid. The semivariogram of the sample values given in Table 1 (page 1919) has a parabolic shape indicative of a linear drift. When such a semivariogram is observed, the simplest method of geostatistical estimation (linear kriging with unknown mean) is not applicable. Universal kriging must be used that takes trends into account. On page 1921 it is stated that the use of trends "is officially disparaged in geostatistics." Again on page 1924 mention is made to "Matheron's commitment to random process (intrinsic) models and his present categorical rejection of deterministic (trend) models for mineral deposit evaluation." Indeed, from articles published by geostatisticians in the 1960s one could infer that geostatistical methods are not compatible with the presence of trends. However, even the simplest

A brief history of TiCI, production and purification is given. Chlorinator feed materials for the production of TiCI4 are classified. The thermodynamics and kinetics of Ticl4 production by chlorination of TiO2 are discussed. Problems encountered in the chlorination and purification steps are outlined in detail. MOST of the current processes for the production of titanium metal require the use of TiC14 as a source of titanium values. This material can only be produced by a dry chlorination process, since it is immediately hydrolyzed in the presence of water. When pure, the tetrachloride is a colorless liquid boiling at 136°C. It fumes readily in moist air, reacting immediately with the moisture to form TiO, and HC1. History The tetrachloride was prepared as early as 1826 by DumasL who chlorinated a red hot mixture of carbon and TiO,. Since then, numerous other mixtures have been used including rutile, ilmenite, beneficiated ilmenites, titanium pigment, slags, and the various titanium metalloids such as TiN, TiCN, TiOC, and TiS2. S2Cl2, phosgene, and CC14 have been substituted for chlorine and CO has been used in place of carbon.

The acid pressure leaching of zinc-lead flotation concentrates from the McArthur River deposit, Northern Territory, Australia, has been studied in a three-stage, continuous, co-current system, using titanium reactors of 6 gal capacity. The starting pulp contained 2.7 lb solids per gal of synthetic spent electrolyte and the final liquors contained 120-125 gpl Zn. Parameters investigated included temperature (95-120°C), oxygen pressure (30-100 psi), acid addition (80-130% of theoretical), and leaching time (35-65 min per stage). Technical factors studied included mixing and pumping of feed, agitation, settling and washing and control mechanisms. The chemistry of liquor impurities, of scale formation in autoclaves and of lead jarosites in residues was studied in some detail. Results indicated that 90-93% zinc recovery could be obtained with a "low- acid" process, using 113°C and 70 psig with oxygen as the favored operating conditions. Residues contained 16-18% elemental sulphur and 15% lead, together with unreacted pyrite and gangue minerals. Pelletizing of residues was impracticable, and alternative suggestions for the recovery of lead, sulphur and silver are discussed. Preliminary estimates for plant and operating costs are given and enable some comparison to be made with conventional procedures.

Rare earth element (REE) analyses of cumulus plagioclase from the PGE ore zone of the Stillwater Complex indicate that pressure fluctuations in the magma chamber acting on a single magma cannot be responsible for features such as the reappearance of Mg-rich olivine on the liquidus. The data are more consistent with a model involving multiple injection and mixing of geochemically distinct magmas. The PGE-bearing sulfides of the J-M Reef are associated with such a reappearance of olivine, indicating that the unusual location of the ore zone may be related to the addition of new magma, compositionally distinct from magmas that produced cumulates in the Ultra- mafic zone of the complex.

Among those concerned with the annealing and heat-treating of aluminum and aluminum alloys, it is well known that after co1d-working a coarser grain is usually produced by slow heating than hy more rapid heating. Consequently, for the control of the grain size produced by annealing or heat-treating cold-worked aluminum and aluminum alloys, the heating rate is of considerable practical importance. References in the current literature on the effect of heating rate are numerous, but it appears neither necessary nor desirable to give here a review of the former nark done on this subject. It became evident during some preliminary work on the recrystallizn-tion of aluminium and aluminum alloys that the effect of heating rate depended upon the type of microstructure of the metal. This observation led to the following study of the relationship of the type of microstructure of the alloy to the effect of the heating rate. Materials Investigated Analyses of the aluminum and aluminium alloys investigatted are given in Table 1. In the past, little attention has been paid to the costs of ventilation, since it seldom represented a significant portion of the total mining cost. However, in recent years adverse mining conditions and increases in power charges have caused ventilation costs to rise. The federal regulations have set minimum standards for volumetric airflow rates in underground coal mines. As a mine develops, the air volume and pressure requirements increase. There are several methods by which the quantity of airflow to the mine and working faces can be increased. Some of the methods include (1) increasing main fan output or replacing the main fan by a new higher capacity fan, (2) reducing leakage across stoppings and overcasts, (3) adding a new ventilation shaft or borehole, (4) reducing resistance to airflow by reducing the resistance factor of the individual airways, increasing the number of airways (especially the parallel airways), or re- arranging the air courses by using the available entries, and (5) using auxiliary ventilation systems. This paper addresses the cost-benefit analysis of several of these alternatives as applied to a large operating coal mine located in southern Illinois. Pressure and quantity surveys were conducted under-ground, and measurements were taken at the main exhaust fans on the surface. The existing ventilation network was modeled by using the Penn State ventilation simulator. The input data included the configuration of branches, resistance of each branch (including a component for shock losses), and changes in pressure and volume. The results of the simulation were compared with the survey data to check the merits and accuracy of the model network. The net- work was designed to take into account shafts, major entries, overcasts, regulators, gob areas, working faces, and major leakage paths. The model network served as the basis for the cost analyses of networks designed for increased airflow. The applicable alternatives for increasing airflow were simulated. Performance data obtained from these simulation runs were utilized to conduct the cost-effectiveness analysis. The costs for each f the alternatives included capital, operating and maintenance costs. These costs were expressed as annual costs in terms of dollars per cfm of circulating air, taking into account the economic life associated with each of the alternatives. The benefits were expressed as increased airflow quantity in the critical sections. The result of these analyses show that for the short-range plans evaluated, the most cost-effective way of increasing airflow at this mine would be to reduce leakage through stoppings and overcasts.

The presence of calcium ion in iron ore pulps that are upgraded by selective desliming can result in indiscriminate flocculation of both iron oxide and siliceous gangue slimes. In order to overcome this adverse effect, deflocculation by three complexing agents, namely ethylenediaminetetzaacetate (EDTA), sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), and sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), was investigated. The precipitates and complexes of these agents with calcium ion were characterized by potentiometric and conductometric titrations, and the surface properties of quartz and goethite were studied in the presence of calcium ion and of the complexing agents by means of streaming potential measurements and flotation tests. The results were then correlated with selective flocculation tests on an artificial mixture of quartz and goethite. EDTA markedly improved the selectivity of flocculation when added in near stoichiometric amounts, whereas STPP was less effective and SHMP was totally ineffective due to strong, indiscriminate dispersion. Remanent calcium polyphosphates on the goethite surface interfered with the adsorption of starch flocculant.

INTRODUCTION The slope stability research plan at Kennecott was developed to serve the specific needs of large, open pit mines; primarily those developed in faulted and highly-fractured intrusive deposits. The program emphasis is on applied research; being defined in this case as research into the engineering mechanics of discontinuous rock and into the related rock property survey and slope design techniques. The program has been developed in phases, with each phase organized to explore more thoroughly the most significant findings of previous work and to improve on techniques found to be applicable. The current work is based on principles developed early in the program and that show promise of having engineering and economic value. A brief summary of the conceptual principles of the program is given to put our current work in context. This is followed by a review of the two cooperative programs done with the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Most recent work is described and interpreted in terms of practical slope design. Although failure-free slopes are a desirable goal, it is recognized that some failures will occur when overall slope designs approach a calculated safety factor of one. A discussion of failure control research is therefore offered. BACKGROUND In 1965 Kennecott management specified that a slope stability technology must be used to achieve optimum development of ore resources. The subject was carefully explored and by 1960 it had been established that there was no technology readily applicable to open pit slope design. Therefore, in 1962, Kennecott Copper Corporation and the U. S. Bureau of Mines agreed upon a cooperative research program having the objective of developing a mine slope stability science. One of the first decisions made by the cooperating groups was that the research must be conducted primarily in the field and not in the unrealistic environments of a laboratory. Accordingly, the Kimbley Pit, an abandoned mine once operated by Kennecott's Nevada Mines Division in Nevada, was selected for the full-scale research. Fortunately, there was near-universal agreement on the basic stability parameters and thus on the areas to be investigated. These parameters were acknowledged to be: (1) anisotropy (generally due to faults or joints), (2) stress, and (3) water; in that order of importance.

In continental Europe the feldspar jig is used almost exclusively for cleaning the fine sizes of coal; it operates with an artificial bed, made up generally of pieces of feldspar or of any other hard and heavy rock with good cleavages. A primitive form of this machine requiring close supervision was used in this country years ago, but output was small. The modern machines are generally air-pulsated Baum-type jigs, with capacities up to 150 tph, and treat sizes from 3/s in. to 0, usually previously dedusted or deslimed. These jigs are equipped with very accurate and sensitive automatic controls insuring satisfactory operation even at low separating gravity and with feeds irregular in quality and quantity. This paper will deal more particularly with coal cleaning separation, but the technical studies apply equally to all minerals.

The mechanical concentration of ores has not attained any considerable extent in Sweden, by reason of a scarcity of ores calling for this kind of treatment. Of rich iron-ores there is still an abundant supply; and magnetic concentration, which in the future undoubtedly will become of great importance, not being as yet demanded by necessity, has not advanced beyond a few experiments. At the copper-mines mechanical concentration has been superseded by chemical processes; the lead mines are worked out; and it is (with one exception) only the mines producing blende, or blende and galena intimately mixed, that have adopted mechanical methods for enriching their low-grade ores. While the concentrating-plants in Sweden are few and their output is comparatively insignificant, the methods employed, the general features of the work and the results obtained under extremely unfavorable conditions, may offer some points of interest to persons who are engaged in this branch of industry and have similar problems to deal with. Before going into a detailed description of the several plants, I will offer a few remarks that hold good for all of them and constitute a general review of Swedish concentration and its conditions. Many independent studies are being made on slag-metal relationships in the open-hearth furnace, and these studies cannot help but result in an ultimate improvement in the quality of open-hearth steel of both the open and killed types. In maintaining quality control at the National Tube Company's plant, emphasis has been placed on an evaluation of the iron oxide content of the steel in as quantitative a manner as possible, in order that the most desirable level of oxidation might be obtained for a given type of steel, and to secure a more precise basis for final de-oxidation. In the past, various methods were used for estimating FeO content of the metal at tap to ensure uniform and thorough deoxidation of killed steel, avoiding overdeoxidation to minimize the amount of inclusions present and to make as sound a steel as possible. For the open-type steels, such control involves obtaining the necessary level of oxidation for the most suitable action of the steel in the molds to provide good surface quality and cross section for the specific grade involved. While rapid analytical methods are available for determination of FeO in the liquid metal, such methods are still not sufficiently rapid for routine control on the open-hearth floor, nor do such analyses provide information as to what causes high or low FeO values. The method of sampling can still be considered a problem in view of the variability encountered in taking simultaneous duplicate tests. With the accurate rapid methods now available for determining carbon in the metal, estimating slag basicity and obtaining temperatures of liquid metal, it was believed possible to determine the influence of the various furnace reactions in establishiug the state of oxidation at a given time. Simultaneous slag and metal tests were used in this analysis, aided by statistical methods, to determine the factors that affect the metal FeO, and also to make a quantitative evaluation of these factors. Data obtained are from actual iurnace operations, the metal test being of the I spoon, Herty type, and taken in duplicate. Metal temperatures were taken with the open-tube bath pyrometer developed by the Research Laboratory of the United States I Steel Corporation. This method of taking open-hearth metal temperature was invented by Collins and Oseland,l and was developed into its present form by L. 0. Sordahl,2 of the Research Laboratory. The instrument and its mode of operation have been fully described by Sordahl and Sosman in three publications.3,4,5 lag components were obtained by chemical analysis. Data were taken from four 165-net-ton furnaces during the working period of the heat. Recognizing that additions of ore affect the metal FeO. no tests were included within 30 min. after ore additions. In all, 65 tests (48 heats) were used in this study.

For perhaps one hundred years scientists have been engaged in attempts at devising a satisfactory method of classification of coal. During this time many charts, tables and graphs have been proposed, some of which have had considerable merit, but no one system has been found to be applicable to all ranks of coal, nor has any one system received general acceptance. In many of the proposals, water eliminated between room temperature and 105" C. has been regarded as extraneous matter and calculations have been made to the air-dry or water-free basis. Such methods of calculation do not lend themselves to satisfactory grouping of the high-moisture coals.1, 2 A consideration not only of the properties of the high-moisture coals and their behavior on drying but of the generally accepted ideas of the coalification process and the role of water in this process indicates that water is an essential constituent of all coals and therefore should not be neglected. For example, in such low-rank coals as the lignites of the Northern Great Plains' deposits the inherent moisture of the lignite as mined plays a very important part in the physical properties thereof. Freshly mined lignite contains upwards of 30 per cent water and is extremely tough and resistant to shock. Upon exposure to the atmosphere, the lump loses part of its moisture and checks and splits, leaving a friable and broken up residue. So far as we have been able to determine, water is the only thing lost in this process and we are forced to the conclusion that moisture plays an extremely important part in the structural properties of the original lignite. With reference to the coalification process, Mack and Hulett3 pointed out in 1917 the important part that water played therein. They observed that water cannot be removed from peat or coal by pressure alone, but only as the result of chemical reaction, and suggested that peat in its early stages may be largely a hydrosol. Slow chemical changes occur over a long period of time until finally the mass becomes more largely a hydrogel. These views are substantiated to some extent by the experi-

Using alternating tension-compression straining, the hardening of magnesium oxide single crystals was studied up to large stresses and strains. At 0.25 pct plastic strain amplitude, the hardening curve is approximately linear with slope 25,000 psi from the shear yield stress, 7 to 8000 psi, to 35,000psi. Above this stress, the slope decreases. The strain hardening behavior of MgO is considered qualitatively similar to that of metal single crystals. The relatively high stress attainable by strain hardening is associated apparently with the high yield stress on the cross-slip system, (001) <110>. Cleavage fracture during testing is uncommon. It is argued that the centers of high internal stress at glide band intersections, at which cracks tend to nucleate, are dispersed by cyclic strain. Special features of the glide band structure produced by cyclic strain and revealed by dislocation etch pits, support this view. Strain hardened MgO has mechanical properties greatly superior to the as-received material: yield stress, greater than 100,000 psi; elongation to fracture about 1 pct. A material is said to strain harden if the yield stress increases with an increment of plastic strain. This definition is usually applied for straining done in one direction, but is also applicable when the strain direction is periodically reversed, Fig. 1. For certain metal single crystals, data are available which permit a comparison of the hardening behavior for cyclic straining and for tension straining.&apos;-4 With certain qualifications, these data show that the same processes of hardening are operative in each type of test.5 Despite this fact, the importance of the technique is not immediately evident, although tension-compression studies of the common metals appear to suggest some deficiencies in theories of strain hardening developed exclusively on the basis of tensile tests. However, a recent observation suggests that the cyclic straining method may be very useful for studying semibrittle crystals in which large plastic strains are not accessible in unidirectional testing. The observation is that zinc crystals, when strained in tension-compression at -52°C, do not fail by cleavage at low stress (-500 psi)6 as they do in tension, but harden to a limiting stress of more than 5000 psi over a total plastic strain of about 600 pct.2 An important characteristic of the behavior of zinc crystals is the high stress, relative to the yield stress, attainable by strain hardening. By comparison, the hardening of aluminum single crystals tested by an identical technique saturates at 1100 psi. This difference is best explained by the cross-slip hypothesis of dynamic recovery.7,8 In zinc, cross slip is difficult because of the high yield stress for glide on planes other than the basal plane in the < 1120 > zone. The present work was undertaken in order to test whether these methods and ideas are applicable to other materials. Magnesium oxide single crystals, in common with most crystals of the rock-salt structure, deform plastically but fail by cleavage after a small strain when tested in tension. It was hoped that larger strains would be attained using tension-compression. There is, in addition, evidence 8a which shows that slip on the probable cross system, (001) < 110>, is difficult in magnesium oxide; it may therefore be possible to attain high stresses by strain hardening. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Experimental methods used in this study were based in part on techniques reported in papers of Stokes, Johnston, and Li.&apos; MgO blocks, purchased from Norton Co., were used without further annealing. Specimens were cleaved to dimensions approximately 0.125 in. sq and 1 in. in length. The gage section, formed by chemical polishing, was sprinkled with 280 mesh silicon carbide particles in order to introduce fresh dislocations. The crystals were then cemented into cylindrical aluminum adapters and clamped in an Instron testing machine. One of two alternating straining programs was used. In the first, total cross-head travel was established and increased in steps after various numbers of cycles. In the second, a capacitance gage was used to directly measure the elongation of the specimen and the crosshead was controlled so as to keep the plastic strain amplitude constant. The straining was always symmetrical with respect to the initial, zero strain condition. While both procedures produce strain hardening, only the latter permits a measure of the total plastic strain so that hardening curves may be drawn. Constant plastic strain amplitude tests were done

The use of geothermal energy is expanding very rapidly. This type of energy has proven commercially profitable for generation of electricity, for space heating, process heating, auxiliary heating of water in conventional steam power plants and for recovery of chemicals contained in natural hot water and steam. Two types of geothermal energy sources are recognized: 1) hot springs in regions of nearly normal heat flow that tap a deep reservoir through which water moves slowly to a hot springs conduit and then rapidly to the surface; 2) hyperthermal areas in which the water is heated by a relatively concentrated heat source related to volcanicity. If there is a geologic trap that provides a geologic analog to a steam boiler, as at Larderello, Italy, the hyperthermal area will have a convecting system that develops superheated water at relatively shallow depth and may provide natural steam in large quantities. If a hyperthermal area is to be productive for a long time, the underflow into the reservoir should be slow enough to allow the heat source and convective system to heat the underflow to the working temperature, and the production rate must not exceed this rate of underflow. A model based on a typical aquifer suggests that the rate of movement of water through the reservoir be such that a few years are spent in transit between isotherms that are spaced about 2°F apart. The possibility of finding blind geothermal areas is illustrated by discussion of the techniques developed in evaluating the subsurface temperatures in the East Tintic district of Utah where a map of isotherms at water level (2000 to 2000 ft below the surface) shows that a hyperthermal area may exist a short distance southeast of the mining district. Very nearly all of the energy that man currently uses comes ultimately from the sun&apos;s radiation. This includes water power, fuels such as wood, peat, coal and petroleum, the wind and all our animal power. In the paper summarizing a conference on solar energyl6 the average amount of solar energy received daily on the earth is taken at about 1 cal per m2 per min or slightly less than 2 pcal per cm2 per sec; this is almost exactly the amount of energy on the average that the earth liberates in regions of normal geothermal gradient due to its own internal heating. In many places, however, the energy released is many times the average and in some of these hyperthermal areas, geothermal steam is used for generation of electricity, and hot springs are used for heating buildings and private dwellings, process heating, auxiliary heating of water in conventional steam power plants, and chemicals may be recoverable from both hot water and steam. The use of hot springs waters for heating houses goes back hundreds of years but until recently was confined to a few dwellings close to the hot springs. In Korea, some houses had hot spring water channeled through conduits in the floor centuries ago and thus the Koreans can be credited with pioneer development of radiant heating. In Iceland at present nearly a third of the population uses natural thermal water for domestic heating." The Reykjavik system pipes hot spring water at about 94°C throughout the city and has devised insulated double pipes that allow the water to be piped for some 25 km with a drop of only 1°C for every 5 km. The actual cost to the Icelandic consumer is only one-third the cost of heating by imported coal and yet the industry is one of the most profitable in Iceland. The most profitable use of geothermal energy has been its conversion into electricity which can be transmitted economically much greater distances than hot water. The largest installation at the present time is that at Larderello, Italy, where the Count of Larderello began to experiment in the production of electricity from geothermal steam 60 years ago — in 1904. He installed his first steam turbine, with a capacity of only 250 kw, in 1912 as the result of a local quarrel with the power company which furnished the current required in the Larderello chemical industry - an industry that then dated back nearly a century. As experience was gained in drilling deep holes to tap geothermal steam and in converting it to electric power, the capacity of the installation of Larderello gradually increased, but was all destroyed by the Germans during their retreat from Italy in the closing

The effects of many alloying eletnents on the acticity coefficient of sulfur in liquid iron have-been studied by the equilibriutn in the reaction Sfin Fe) + Hz = HzS at 1550°C&apos;. Results are expressed in terms of a concentration variable for a nonmetallic or for a substitutional metallic solute. Activity coefficient of sulfur, defined as increased by B, Al, C, Si, Ge, Sn, P, As, Sb, Mo, W, Co, and PI. It is decreased by Cu,Au, Ti. Zr, V, h&apos;b, Ta, Cr, ,23n, and Ni. Irulues oj. the interaction coejficient 0i = 6 In are labulated. The same interactions are expressed also in terms of atom fraction and of weight percent. The thermodynamic properties of sulfur in liquid iron have been fairly well established. Our recent paper1 reported new determinations of activity coefficient up an atom fraction of 0.12 and equations based on a careful review of all published data. The effects of alloying elements on the activity of sulfur have been studied by several investigators,2"11 especially by Morris and Williams for silicon,&apos; by Morris and Buehl for carbon,~ and by Sherman and Chipman for manganese. phosphorus, and al~minum.~ However, the effects of some important alloying elements remain to be determined. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of many alloying elements on the activity of sulfur in Fe-S-j ternary systems. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD This study was based on experimental determination of equilibrium in the reaction at 1550°C: The same apparatus and procedure as described in our previous paper have been retained, and the same corrections were applied for dissociation of H2S. The alumina crucibles used in the experiments consisted of four separate compartments. In a given experimental run. kach of three alumina crucibles held four different samples of about 3 g each which reached equilibrium in the same gas atmosphere and temperature. The charges were made up of electrolytic iron, pure iron sulfide, and desired alloying elements, which were pure metal or master alloys made in the laboratory. The weighed samples were held for 4 to 12 hr in the prepared atmosphere at 1550°C. They were then low- ered to be cooled as quickly as possible. The quenched metal beads were crushed to avoid the errors of segregation in the ingot. The sulfur content was determined gravimetrically and alloy content by appropriate chemical analysis. CALCULATIONS The apparent equilibrium constants of Eq. [I] are expressed as follows from the corrected gas ratios and sulfur concentrations: The term K" is the observed equilibrium constant in any given ternary solution, K&apos; is the value for the Fe-S binary solution. and the limiting value of K&apos; in the infinitely dilute solution is designated by K, which is the true equilibrium constant in Eq. [I]. In the thermodynamic treatment of nonmetallic elements in a metallic solution, it has been suggested1&apos; that the lattice ratio has certain advantages over other variables to express the concentration of solute. In interstitial solid solutions the lattice ratio zj is proportional to the ratio of filled interstitial sites to those which remain unfilled. The equations derived for the activity of the solute using zj as the concentration variable are found also to be applicable to liquid solutions containing nonmetallic solutes when the nonmetal is treated as if it were interstitial. For this purpose we adopt the following definitions: The quantity vj which is negative for interstitial solutes is taken as -1 for nonmetallic and +1 for metallic solutes. For purposes of calculation however ; j may be assigned a value which results in a linear relation such as shown in Figs. 1 to 15. The activity coefficient of sulfur, Qs, and equilibrium constant.
