Although wildcatting was hampered by the general overproduction and low price of crude, several developments, worthy of note in the history of the petroleum industry in the Rocky Mountain region, were made in 1927. This district records production from six new fields, two of these having been heretofore productive of gas. Deeper pay horizons were found in two other oil fields. In order to facilitate transportation from fields, six new oil pipe lines were completed or in the course of construction at the end of the year, and one line is proposed for 1928. Four gas lines were completed, one was under construction, and one was proposed for 1928. The total production in 1927 in the Rocky Mountain district was 29,591,379 bbl.,' a decrease of 7,771,991 bbl., or 21 per cent., fro111 the previous year. This was occasioned by natural decline and the general curtailment of production and drilling. A review of the development by states follows. Colorado Production from horizons in the Morrison and Sundance at Craig and at Ilrs Dome, and the bringing in of the deepest producing well in the Rocky Mountain district on North McCalluin anticline (Waltlrn) in Jackson County are the outstanding developments for the year in Colorado. In March the Midwest Refining Co.'s Parkinson 21 SD, SW SE, Sec. 22 T p. 4 N R 92 W, Iles Domr, Moffat County Colorado, found gas in sands in the Morrison estimated at 15,000,000 cu. ft., and at 3242 ft. an oil sand was encountered in the Sundance. Initial production from this horizon was 2575 bbl. in this well. This structure previously was only productive of water in the sands of the Dakota group but has been producing shale oil from horizons in the Benton. The second well completed by the Midwest Refining Co., No. 18 SD in Sec. 23 was also productive of gas in the Morrison and made an initial of 300 bbl. from sands in the Sundance. By the end of the year three other wells wrrc nearing the completion stage but none of them indicate that they will be as big producers as the discovery. To date the productive area has

WHEN using an optical goniometer to determine crystal orientation' it is advantageous to use a preferential etchant so that the etch pits have plane faces which are parallel to crystallographic planes, all of which are of the same "form." "Westinghouse Silver Etch" (WAg), a preferential etch for germanium, is made up as follows: 40 ml of 49.7 pct hydrofluoric acid, 20 ml of 70.7 pct nitric acid, and 40 ml of distilled water containing 2.0 g of silver nitrate. Examination of metallographs of WAg etched surfaces (Fig. 1, for example) indicates that, regardless of crystal orientation, the faces of the etch pits are (111) surfaces. Optical goniometer examination of these WAg etched surfaces also indicates that the faces of the etch pits are (111) surfaces, i.e., all bright reflections are from (111) planes. When using an optical goniometer of the type described by Barrett,' not only (111) reflections from a WAg etched germanium surface but also other reflections of lower intensity will be observed. These latter reflections can cause confusion. We have used an optical goniometer made from a war surplus astrocompass and a galvanometer lamp. The reflections are observed by using the goniometer in a darkened room and letting the reflected light be in- cident upon a piece of white paper. The resulting decrease of goniometer sensitivity enables (111) reflections only to be observed. This in turn permits the crystal orientation to be determined in a matter of minutes, since only two measurements are necessary. The authors wish to acknowledge the help received from R. E. This paper describes the design of a cell used to measure the electrical conductivity, or the reciprocal resistivity, of granular materials. It also establishes a quantitative relationship between the electrical conductivity and the electrical separation of selected mineral samples. It is estimated' that the free world produces about 13 million tons of mineral concentrates a year by electrostatic or electrodynamic methods. At least 95% of these concentrates are produced by corona discharge type machines that separate minerals by exploiting the differences in their electrical conductivity. But, what is meant by the electrical conductivity of a mineral? How large a difference in the electrical conductivity of two mineral species is necessary to effect a separation? Just what is the role of conductivity in electrical separations with regard to capacity and selectivity? There is a considerable amount of information in the literature on both the mechanisms of conduction and the values of the electrical conductivity of pure single-crystal mineral specimens. In addition, some insight into the role of mineral conductivity can be obtained by referring to a Bureau of Mines publication' in which 95 minerals have been grouped as conductors or insulators as a function of temperature. The classification was made on the basis of the percent of weight that reported as "conductors" in an electrical separator. But, as is often the case in the mineral industry, practical application leads theory — and there is little useful information in the literature giving any kind of quantitative relationship between electrical conductivity and electrical separations. The problem is a bit complex because electrical conductivity per se — which can be rather easily measured on large, single grains — is not sufficiently informative to permit quantitative predictions of the separability of the mineral system. Practical "high-tension"* separations are made at such feed rates that the band of minerals on the rotor is multilayered in thickness. Thus, the effective conductivities of minerals as seen by a high-tension machine include particle-to-particle contact resistance, which is often a controlling factor in making a separation. This is particularly true when the mineral grains are coated with slime or with a dielectric surface film. From a high-tension separation viewpoint, one is actually concerned with the time required for corona-charged grains to lose enough charge so that the centrifugal force acting on the particles exceeds the image force holding the grains to the rotor. This calculation requires a knowledge of the effective mineral conductivity s. (The conductivity of the metal rotor is sufficiently greater than that of the minerals so that it need not be considered in charge decay calculations.) THE refining period of an open-hearth heat blends imperceptibly into the finishing period, during which final adjustments are made in slag composition, in bath action and temperature, and in composition of the steel, in order to prepare it for casting into ingots. Operations must be governed by the consideration that alterations in the character of the heat during the finishing period must be held to a minimum. In a broad sense, the finishing and deoxidation period of a heat may be said to be- gin when the action of the last ore addition has ceased, and to end when the teeming of the ingots is completed. INGOT STRUCTLIRES A survey of the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of ingot structure is required because deoxidation treatments during the finishing period control the amount of gas evolved during solidification and consequently determine the type of ingot structure. Four classes of ingots are recognized, de- pending upon the degree of deoxidation to which the steel has been subjected. These types are killed, semikilled, capped, and rimmed; typical examples of their structures are represented by ingots 1, 2, 5, and 7, respectively, of Fig 9-1. The actual ingots from which these cross sections were sketched were all poured to the same height (indicated by the dotted lines) in the same type and size of bottle-top molds. The eight drawings of the figure represent selected types of ingot structure in a continuous series from "dead killed" to "wild," resulting from variations in the total quantity of gas evolved, from none at all to copious amounts, during solidification of the steel in the mold. The kinetics of the inter granular penetration and embrittlement of [100] tilt boundaries in 99.998 pct pure nickel upon exposure to bismuth-rich Ni-Bi liquids have been determined in the temperature range from 700° to 900°C. The kinetics of penetration are parabolic in time at constant temperature over most of the temperature range. In a series of 43-deg bicrystals the rate of penetration is anisotropic with respect to the direction of penetration into the grain boundaries. In lower-angle bicrystals the penetration rate is isotropic. The rate of penetration decreases with tilt angle at 700°C. The activation energy for penetration in the 43-deg bicrystals is 42 kcal per g-atom independent of direction. It is concluded that the intergranular penetration and embrittlement in the presence of the liquid proceeds by a grain boundary diffusion process and not by the intrusion of a liquid film. This was confirmed by a determination that the kinetics of penetration and embrittlement were the same in the 43-deg bicrystals upon exposure to bismuth vapor under conditions such that no bulk liquid phase would be thermodynamically stable. WhEN solid metals are exposed to a corrosive liquid-metal environment, the grain boundaries are sites of preferential attack. Depending on the temperature, the composition of the liquid, and the composition, structure, and state of stress of the solid, a number of modes of attack are possible. This paper reports a study of the kinetics of intergranular penetration and embrittlement of high-purity nickel bicrystals upon exposure to bismuth which, together with an earlier study by Cheney, Hochgraf, and Spencer,&apos; demonstrates that there are at least two modes of intergranular attack possible in the Ni-Bi system. In the study by Cheney et al., columnar-grain specimens of 99.5 pct pure nickel were exposed to liquid bismuth presaturated with nickel in the temperature range 670" to 1050°C. They found that the majority of the boundaries, which were predominantely high-angle boundaries, were penetrated by capillary liquid films, the attack proceeding by a process which will be termed grain boundary wetting. This process occurs in a stress-free solid when twice the liquid-solid surface tension is less than the surface tension of the grain boundary,* i.e., when 2yLs < YGB In this case the penetration of the grain boundary by the liquid occurs at a relatively rapid rate, resulting in the severe embrittlement of a polycrystalline solid. Grain boundary wetting is a common mode of intergranular attack in systems in which the lower melting component is relatively insoluble in the solid, but the solid has an appreciable solubility in the liquid, for example, the Ni-Bi system, Fig. 1. In systems of this type at temperatures above the range of stability of any intermetallic phases, once the liquid is saturated with respect to the solid so that no gross solution occurs, chemical gradients are small, and surface tensions become major driving forces for attack, provided the solid is stress-free. The results of Cheney et al. appear to be typical of those encountered when grain boundary wetting occurs.&apos; Capillary films were observed in the boundaries after quenching from the exposure temperature. The mean depth of penetration increased linearly with time, and the activation energy for the process was found to be 22 kcal per g-atom. In a study of the Cu-Bi system Yukawa and sinott4 found that the depth of penetration of bismuth into high-purity copper bicrystals of orientations from 22 to 63 deg of tilt about (100) at 649°C ranged from 0.05 to 0.25 in. after a 12-hr anneal. This corresponds to a linear rate of 6 to 15 X 10~6 cm per sec. At the same reduced temperature of 0.68 the rate for the Ni-Bi system&apos; was 7 x lo-&apos; cm per sec. In another study of the Cu-Bi system, Scheil and schess15 determined the kinetics of grain boundary wetting in hot-worked commercial rod. While there were several complicating factors present in this study, there is general agreement with the above results. The kinetics of penetration were linear, the activation energy was 20 kcal per g-atom, and at 650°C the rate of wetting was 2 to 5 x 10-6 cm per sec. IN a recent paper Kuczynski&apos; studied the rate at which the crack between a metallic plane and a spherical particle of the same material is filled up gradually when heated at temperatures near the melting point. If x is the radius of contact between plane and sphere (fig. I), Kuczynski shows experimentally that x5 = At [1] where t is the time. Assuming that the mechanism of transport of matter is the volume diffusion of vacant lattice sites, he is also able to prove Eq 1 theoretically. The constant A contains as a factor the self-diffusion coefficient of the metal and he shows that the values for this coefficient deduced from his experiments yield the same activation energy as that calculated by other methods, which is a confirmation of this point of view. Kuczynski has also considered theoretically the law of growth of x which would be expected if surface diffusion were the important mechanism. He suggests that x should then obey a law of the form x7 = At, and claims to be able to decide the mechanism involved from the observed law of growth., The purpose of this note is to prove this incorrect. On the contrary, when the mechanism is surface diffusion Eq 1 is also obeyed, but with a different constant A. Following Kuczynski, we suppose the bottom of the crack (surface A A) to have an average radius of curvature p. As a result of this curvature the concentration of adsorbed atoms in this surface, n(p) per cm2, will be smaller, and the concentration of vacant lattice sites in the neighborhood, N(p) per cm3, will be larger than the corresponding concentrations, n(w) and N(w), for a flat surface. A COMPLETE discussion of the literature on the subject of the influence of copper on iron and steel will be published elsewhere.1 The present paper is concerned especially with the precipitation-hardening of copper steels, and brief mention will be made here only of the work of Kin-near,2,3 Nehl4 and Buchholtz and Koster,5 who alone have studied this phase of the subject. Kinnear found that normalized low-carbon steel castings containing about 1.0 per cent copper on drawing at temperatures in the neighbor-hood of 530° C. (1000° F.) increased in tensile strength and yield point, with little decrease in ductility. The maximum effect was obtained with about 0.9 to 1.0 per cent copper, and when the copper exceeded 3 per. cent no improvement occurred on reheating. Kinnear did not study the effect of time of reheating-an all important factor where precipitation is concerned. Nehl,6 who apparently was unaware of Kinnear&apos;s work, recognized the change as due to precipitation and studied the interdependence of time and temperature of reheating, the temperature of the initial solution heat treatment, and the speed of cooling necessary to retain the bulk of the copper in supersaturated solu-tion and to give an increase in hardness and tensile strength on reheating. Nehl found that if the final rolling or forging temperatures exceeded 700° C. (1300° F.) it was not necessary even to normalize the steel, but full precipitation occurred on merely reheating the forged or rolled shapes at 500° C. (930° F.).

DURING an investigation of electro-deposited silver structures, samples were prepared for metallographic examination by cold mounting in plastic, grinding on successive grades of emery paper down to 3/0, and chemically polishing by swabbing using the chromic acid solution described by Gilpin and Worzala.1 Attempts to etch these samples using the standard solutions described for silver (e.g., 5 pet KCN-5 pet Na2S2O8, H2O2-NH4OH, and various potassium dichro-mate solutions) all failed to give good results due to staining of the samples and to rapid etching. The staining was caused by the chromic acid polishing solution being trapped in small fissures between the sample and the mounting plastic, and also in small fissures in the sample itself. To overcome these difficulties, an etchant was developed which prevented staining at the same time as it slowly etched the sample. This resulted in a very clean, crisply etched surface as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This etch consisted of 10 ml of orthophosphoric acid, 10 ml of distilled water, and 2 drops of the polishing solution noted above,&apos; which is made by mixing 100 ml of saturated CrO3 solution, 45 ml of 10 pet HC1 solution, and 800 ml of distilled water. The etching procedure involved taking the final polished sample, either immersing or swabbing in the etchant for a period of 1 to 2 min, rinsing as quickly as possible in distilled water, alcohol, and ethyl ether in that order, and then immediately drying. This etch is easily controlled due to its slow rate of etching, and produces samples with clean, sharp surfaces. Pits due to overetching produced varying contrast effects when viewed under polarized light, and are therefore obviously useful for revealing many structural details within the sample. Application of the conventional depletion drive calculation methods to volatile oil reservoirs results in erroneous estimates of ultimate recovery. In view of the increasing number and importance of volatile oil reservoirs, a special technique has been developed which will result in more realistic predictions using laboratory data obtained from reservoir fluid studies of a specific type. The experimental data are designed to permit continuous material accounting and, therefrom, provide the hy-clrocarbon composition of both the flowing oil and gas phases. The resultant well-stream composition data are then used directly in surface recovery calculations utilizing equilibrium ratios. A step by step procedure, specifically designed for routine use by the practicing reservoir engineer, is presented in an appendix. An actual study performed on a deep Mid-Continent reservoir is used ay an il-lustrathe example. INTRODUCTION It has been a practice for many years to utilize the conventional ma- terial balance methods in conjunction with relative permeability concepts for the prediction of recovery from solution gas drive reservoirs.&apos; Those who have performed such calculations recognize that compromises of several types are necessary in order to reduce the calculations to a reasonable degree of complexity. The most serious assumption involved results from the necessity of treating the produced oil and gas as separate fluids, independent of each other in their behavior. It is further assumed that the gas which is evolved in the reservoir as a result of pressure decline will not yield liquid upon the reduction of pressure and temperature resulting from production through surface equipment. Although these shortcomings have been recognized,&apos; it has been difficult to attempt refinement of calculation procedures since the laboratory data available normally were not of the proper type or extent to permit such calculations. Three general procedures have been available for depletion drive calculations when laboratory fluid data are of the conventional type. Differential Procedure The most simple, and most widely used, method requires use of the formation volume factor and gas sol- ubility data obtained from a differential liberation performed at reservoir temperature. This procedure ignores the differences existing between the fluid behavior in the reservoir and its behavior as it is produced through surface separation equipment. The errors introduced are not serious when dealing with very low volatility fluids and this method may be utilized if the laboratory data indicate only slight differences between the differential data and the flash data obtained from separator tests. Modified Differential Procedure This method was developed when it became apparent that medium volatility fluids evidenced a wide difference between the flash and differential data. The differential data are adjusted by changing from a residual oil basis to a stock tank oil basis. All that is required is multiplication of the differential data by the ratio of residual oil to stock tank oil relative volumes existing for the original reservoir fluid at the determined saturation pressure. This procedure generally results in increased calculated ul-timate recovery; however, such results should be viewed critically. The stepped-up pace of US open-pit and surface mining during the 1970&apos;s is a direct response by mining firms and equipment manufacturers to rising costs and declining ore grades. In the race for bigger and more efficient machines, rotary drills have emerged as the foremost leader in primary drilling at major US surface operations. At least 12 different manufacturers now offer rotary rigs in the 102- mm-diam. (4-in.) or greater blasthole size range. With capital investment for the larger units quickly approaching $1 million, the question is asked, "What&apos;s been the performance record to date of rotary drill rigs operating in North America?" To answer that question, a comprehensive study of rotary blasthole drills was conducted which qualitatively reveals various problem areas inherent in the rotary drill market and indicates some new directions for improvement.

If it does, frontal displace- ment occurs in the laboratory experiments, and oil INTRODUCTION Thc puposes of this paper are to present theoretical and experimental evidence for occurrence of macroscopic instabilities in displacement of one viscous fluid by another immiscible with it through a uniform porous medium and to compare available experimental data with some predictions of a theory of instability developed by the first author. The instabilities are referred to as macroscopic in the sense that spatially quasi-sinusoidal, growing fingers of the displacing liquid are formed, the width and peak-to-peak separation (wavelength) of which is large relative to a characteristic length of the particular permeable medium such as grain size. Visual models of two kinds have been used to obtain observations: displacement of oil by water-glycerine solutions through the flow channel formed by closely spaced parallel plates and displacement of oil by water with and without initial interstitial water through unconsolidated glass powder packs, employing the technique of matching indices of refraction. In all cases we have observed macroscopic instabilities or fingers under conditions predicted by the theory to be favorable for their occurrence. The phenomenon discussed here is not the production of streamers due to gross inhomogeneities such as permeability stratification of the porous medium. It is our object to show, on the contrary, that a quantitative prediction of finger spacing is possible in a porous medium known to be macroscopically homogeneous and isotropic throughout. The importance of the phenomenon in its influence on the configuration of oil and water with respect to oil production behavior was noted earlier by Engel-berts and Klinkenberg&apos; who coined the term "viscous fingering". The production of non-ferrous secondary metals has become a large and important industry in the United States, and deals with practically cvery type of manufacturing concern. Its business is unique in that it generally buys frorn its customers as well as sells to them, whether they are individuals, cities, corporations, or the United States government. Its operations are of vital importance to the success and prosperity of nlany of the nation&apos;s most important manufacturers; yet there are few industries about which less is generally known by those outside it, whether concerning the rliagnitude of its operations or the details of its actual technique. The industry itself is to blame for this meager publicity, because its technical men have made few attempts to openly exchange ideas, in spite of the excellent examples set by the iron and steel or the copper and brass industries. Whether this is due to the ancient shroud of secrecy generally supposed to cover smelting operations, or because its technical men actually felt that the industry was too puny to be interesting, is hard to say. This paper will consider its subject in a general way, attenlpting to show something of the size and importance of the industry, as well as its fitness to do its work well. Attention will be called to the sound economic reasons for the handling of non-ferrous wastes by specialists, and to the often unseen losses of metals and labor which occur when manufacturc~rs rcclairn thrir own metallic wastes. Magnitude of the Modern Industry No particular thought is given to the kitchen accident whereby a ruined saucepan is sorrowfully tossed into the ash can, yet it is a fairly safe guess that within a month this saucepan, together with hundreds of its follows, will again be in service, perhaps in an autonlobile crankcase, or in an electric vacuum sweeper. It is by this conversion of the useless into the useful, whether from home or large manufacturer, that the secondary tonnage is built up.

William Kent, New York City: I regret that I have not had the time since the Cincinnati meeting to make as complete a study of Mr. Salom&apos;s paper as I wished. I regard it as one of the most important papers that have been presented on this subject, and worthy of complete study. I started out, on the limited time I had, on a system of study which I would recommend to any one else who has leisure to complete the investigation. I took the original report presented at the Cincinnati meeting, and selected from it&apos; such tests as had the analyses reported along with the physical tests, giving the amounts of carbon, phosphorus, manganese, etc., taking only those in which all these elements are given.

T&apos;HE Columbia Section of the A. 1. M. E. took charge of the Western Mining Convention on Oct. 3, and the meeting was held under their auspices. W. L. Zeigler, chairman of the Section, called the session to order. The first paper on the program, "Lead Refining Practice at Bunker Hill Smelter," was presented in per-son by the author, A. F. Beasley, superintendent of the smelter. He pointed out the differences in the refining practice at Bunker Hill from other American refineries. The Bunker Hill plant was the first to adopt the liquation process for silver skims as developed in Australia. Details were given of operating practice with results. F. F. Colcord questioned the author in regard to the kind of metal best suited for kettles, which was said to be cast iron.

THE Federal taxes on incomes and excess profits are of course heavy. In 1917, the value of the mineral production of the United States was a little in excess of $5,000,000,000. The total of Federal taxes for that year, for the mineral producing companies, as computed by themselves, amounts, according to tentative compilations, to about $207,000,000, and the total for the comprehensive group of mineral and metal indus-tries to about $766,000,000, which figures represent respectively 9.5 per cent. and 35.1 per cent. of the total tax paid by all corporations. Be-cause of greater complexities in applying the revenue laws to mineral properties than to most other industries, opportunity is afforded for wide differences of view. Heat contents of extremely pure iron were measured over the range 300"to 1433"K, using a diphenyl ether calorimeter. Results from three samples containing widely differing impurities agreed with one another and with Previously reported results at higher temperatures (1184 ° to 1809°K) by Olette and Ferrier. From these data a table of heat contents of iron has been Prepared which is believed to be more accurate than those previously available. CP values have been derived which are consistent with these heat contents, with the best experimental Cp data, and with the thermodynamic conditions of equilibrium between bcc and fcc iron. The opinion is expressed that low-temperature extrapolations of presently known Cp values for y-Fe are not reliable. It would seem that the thermodynamic properties of iron, which is by far our most important metal, should have been well established long ago. This is not the case, however. As discussed by Olette and Ferrier,&apos; there is objection to every earlier heat content measurement. While the best true Cp determinations agree well at temperatures below the Curie point, there is wide divergence at higher temperatures. Several investigators have examined available data and attempted to calculate thermodynamic functions for iron that are consistent with the two equilibrium temperatures of bcc and fcc iron. The two primary efforts were those of Austin&apos; in 1930 and Darken and smith3 in 1948. The recommended values differ considerably; integration of Austin&apos;s Cp values leads to a heat content at 1100°K which is 300 cal per g-atom higher than the value recommended by Darken and Smith. The compilation of Fisher4 in 1949 was based on the selection of Austin. In 1956, Weiss and Tauer obtained yet another set of values by resolving Cp values into components due to dilation, lattice vibration, electronic excitation, and magnetism. The magnitude of contribution by each component and its dependence on temperature was estimated by semiempirical means. Their values are not self-consistent in that they do not form smooth curves when plotted vs temperature; moreover, their calculations cannot easily be repeated since they do not give the values of some of the parameters used. Clearly, experimental values for iron were in a most unsatisfactory state. The presently described measurements of the heat content of iron were therefore undertaken, covering temperatures as high as 1433°K. While the work was in progress, the high-temperature (1193" to 1789"K) heat content measurements of Olette and Ferrier&apos; were published; in the region of temperature overlap the present results agree with Olette and Ferrier well within experimental accuracy. It is believed that the present results, combined with those of Olette and Ferrier, provide for the first time a reliable set of heat contents of iron from room temperature to the melting point. From these data, guided by available Cp measurements, it proved possible to derive Cp, entropy, and free energy function values for @-iron from room temperature to the melting point, and for y- iron in the temperature region of its stability. Exhaustive study led to the conclusion that extrapolations of y-iron functions to room temperature were not reliable enough to be useful; hence these have been omitted from the tables. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. Three samples of extremely high purity iron from different sources, containing widely different impurities, were measured. The first of these, designated "Chipman", was kindly supplied by Dr. K. K. Kelley of the U. S. Bureau of Mines from a lot which was made many years ago by Dr. John Chipman of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The second, designated6&apos;Teddington", was supplied by the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, England, from a lot zone-refined by them. (written discussion *).-The Chilean mill has generally been considered a fine-crushing machine and as such has had many advocates; it has also. had quite a number of denouncers; hence, the action of the Portland engineers in using the Chilean mill for the preparatory work usually accomplished in, rolls or rock breakers and adding a ball mill to do the fine grinding is novel, though of doubtful utility in the long run, even though a fair efficiency is obtained for the combination machines, as measured by Chilean mill practice. In order to follow the development of Chilean mill practice on Cripple Creek ores, I might say that two 6-ft., Chilean mills were placed in operation in Stratton&apos;s Independence mill in April, 1908, treating ore crushed by rolls to pass Y4 in. screen aperture. Screening was, however, found to be an unnecessary refinement, as was also the use of plows in the mills; both screening and plowing were abandoned before the Portland engineers finished the experiments in stamp milling upon which they were then engaged. Two additional 6-ft. Chilean mills were added in the spring of 1911, three of them giving the required 10,000 tons per month capacity, one being always in reserve. The Portland company began using Chilean mills in June, 1910, at its Victor mill, and the same company purchased the Stratton&apos;s Independence mill in June, 1915, and remodeled it; it is now known as the Independence mill. A description of Stratton&apos;s Independence milling practice, is given in the November, 191.1, issue of Mining Majazine (London). These Chilean mills were used as fine grinders and that they accomplished their purpose is shown by the screen analyses, in which 62 per cent. of the pulp passed 150-mesh screens. To make coarse crushers of these Chilean mills, the Portland engineers have increased the speed, substituted steel in various parts for cast iron, provided new and enlarged thrust bearings to take care of the centrifugal force incident to higher speed, and have, thereby, greatly increased the cost of the machines. They have also reduced the width of the tires and dies from 8 in., as used in the original mill, to 7 in., a reduction of 12 ½ per cent. in the crushing surfaces, to say nothing of the loss of abrasion or attrition incident to the larger surface. At the same time, they have apparently increased the weight of the rollers by using tires 5 7/8 in. thick as against tires varying between 3 and 4 in. on the original mills, thereby increasing
