Prior to Sept. 1, 1928, there had never been constructed what might be termed a long pipe line with electric-welded field joints. A year later more than 2500 miles of electric-welded lines had been completed which varied in diameter from 6 to 20 in., and in length from 50 to 700 miles. This paper discusses methods used on five lines with a total length of about 750 miles. The welding equipment used for the firing line or rolling welds, was 300-amp. generators driven with six-cylinder gasoline engines, and for the bell-hole or tie-in welds, 200-amp. generators driven by four-cylinder gasoline engines. A welding gang consisted of a foreman, 6 to 12 firing-line welders and 2 to 4 bell-hole welders, a mechanic and a tractor driver. Coupons about 1/4 in. thick were frequently cut from completed welds, which showed a cross-section of the weld and an indication of its size and penetration. For tests of tensile strength complete welds were cut out. The tensile strength of 52 welds cut from 420 miles of 12-in. line averaged 50,870 Ib. per square inch. The following results give a fair average of the number of welds made per man per day: on 157 miles of 8-in. line both firing-line and hell-hole welds averaged 15.3—the firing-line average was 21; on 39 miles of 10-in. line the firing-line average was 19.9; on 50 miles of 6-in. line, with unfavorable weather, the average was 17.7; on 424 miles of 12-in. line most of which was welded during the spring, 10.3, and with good weather the average rose to 13 welds per day. The average time for making a complete weld on 12-in. pipe 0.313 in. thick was found to be 30 min. for the rolling weld and 45 min. for tie-in welds. A comparison of costs between electric and gas welding shows that the cost of labor for electric welding is 25 per cent. more than gas, generating cost 61 per cent. less than gas, welding wire 40 per cent. less than gas, and supervision and overhead the same. Underground construction involves all the legal problems common to the construction industry and adds a nice little group of its own. Elements which will ultimately affect contractor-owner relationship commence to form almost as soon as the owner conceives of the project. A few of these with emphasis on their application to underground construction will be mentioned. (1) During the design stage, determination must be made as to whether the specifications will be general or restrictive. To what extent will the operations of the contractor be controlled? Can he proceed to use any method of tunnel excavation that he desires and only be responsible for the end result or will specific excavation procedures be required? Can explosives be used? Under what restrictions? Are tunnel supports required? How long can the crown behind the heading remain unsupported? What kind of supports are required? What restrictions on the placement of tunnel-lining concrete will be required? Each of you could extend this list for many pages but these illustrations are indicative of decisions that must be made in advance of bidding, and the ultimate decision on each question can have a significant effect on the legal relationships that exist between the contractor and the owner. The owner wants a good job at a fair price. On the other hand, nothing is worse than having a tunnel collapse during the construction period, with its extra costs, loss of life, and delay to the entire project. If the specifications are too restrictive, increased costs of performance are bound to occur. Owners save tremendous amounts of money by obtaining a contractor who has been ingenious in devising the most economical construction procedure. Care must be taken in drafting the specifications so that the benefits of such ingenuity will not be lost. (2) HOW is the contract to be awarded? Will there be open bidding, a restricted list of bidders, or will there be negotiations with a comparatively few contractors? If it is a government project, whether Federal, state, or

INCE1 proposed that electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged particles was responsible for slime-coating. Del Giudice2 postulated the metathetic formation of a cementing compound. Wark3 suggested that prevention of slime-coating was related to peptization of the slime. [ ] In the experiments of Table I the technique employed was essentially that of del Giudice, with the difference that the particle was examined under a film of water rather than dry.4 In general, the polished particle was agitated for 2 min. in a pulp consisting of 12.5 grams of the slime (-200 mesh) and 50 c.c. of distilled water, washed in three baths of distilled water, and examined at 220 diameters with the Leitz Ultropak. Observations of Brownian movement were made at 850 diameters with dark-field illumination. Several of these experiments do not jibe with the metathesis theory. According to published solubilities,5,6 the lead salts of the anions in experiments c through g are more insoluble than lead carbonate, there- [ ] fore should prevent the formation of lead carbonate on the galena surface. In experiment i the calcium oxalate, which presumably was on the calcite surfaces, should have permitted the formation of a lead carbonate cement by virtue of its greater solubility. Experiments j through m show that the addition of lime accelerates the deposition of quartz onto a galena surface. The writer is unable to postulate a satisfactory cementing compound, according to the metathesis theory, to explain this effect. AN investigation of the fracture plane of titanium, containing 0.5 wt pct to 1 wt pct 0, was recently carried out by fracturing large-grain specimens in a tensile jig at room and liquid air temperature. The experiments were carried out on strip specimens 3 to 5 mm wide, 2 mm thick and about 100 mm long. The specimens consisted of several grains, each occupying the entire cross section of the strip and extending over a length varying from 5 to 20 mm. These specimens were prepared by a method described elsewhere.' The identification of the fracture plane was possible in twelve of approximately thirty crystals investigated. In some cases severe local distortion took place near the fracture and prevented identification of the fracture plane. On, at least, three occasions the fracture propagated in a helicoidal

Gap electroluminescent diodes have been prepared by the vapor phase diffusion of zinc into n-Gap crystals which were grown from a gallium solution (10 wt pct Gap) doped with tellurium and Ga203. A marked improvement in the efficiency of the red electrolumines -cence has been achieved by heat treatment after diffusion. External quantum efficiencies of diodes annealed under optimum conditions are 0.2 to 0.6 pct at room temperature, or about 200 times higher than the efficiencies of diodes quenched after diffusion. The optimum dopant concentrations in the gallium melt from which the crystals were grown are 3to6 x at. pct Te and 4 to 8 x 10-2 mol pct Ga203. The efficient diodes are characterized by linearly graded junctions with an i-layer 0.1 to 0.2u thick. Annealing increases the emission intensity by a factor of 20 to 50 and decreases the current density to 1/3 to 1/8 that of quenched diodes at a given bias. The decrease in current is attributed to an annihilation of deep recombination centers in the depletion layer. The increase in emission intensity is interpreted in terms of an increase in lifetime of minority carriers and an increase in the relative intensity of red-to-infrared emission. The dependence of these quantities on the tellurium and oxygen doping levels is also discussed. A number of studies have been made of the red light emission from for ward-biased Gap diodes.' At room temperature this emission band is centered at 7OOO? with a spectral width of nearly 1000?. Low-tempera-ture photoluminescence indicates that this emission is due to either the radiative annihilation of an exciton bound to a pair of zinc and oxygen atoms substituting on nearest neighbor lattice sites2,3 or the radiative recombination of an electron bound to this Zn-O pair with a hole bound to an isolated zinc shallow acceptor.3 An emission band is also observed with a spectral peak at 9800?. This infrared emission has been shown to be due to the recombination of an electron trapped at an isolated oxygen deep donor with a hole trapped at an isolated zinc acceptor.4 The red emission from Gap diodes is fairly efficient at room temperature because the nearest neighbor Zn-0 pair forms a deep electron trap at 0.3 to 0.4 ev below the edge of the conduction band.2'4 In diodes grown by liquid epitaxy an external quantum efficiency of 2.1 x 10-2 (photon/electron) has been attained by heat treatment at relatively low temperatures.5 This heat treatment was found to increase the efficiency by a factor of 3 to 6. However, no detailed studies have-been reported on the effects of heat treatment. We can only cite Onton and Lorenz's work6 on the change ; in the relative intensity of red-to-infrared emission. Heat treatment has also been tried on junctions built in during growth, but contrary to expectations the efficiency decreased. In-diffusion is a simple and controllable method of fabricating p-n junctions. For Gap, zinc is generally used to form a p-type layer on n-type crystals. The emission efficiencies of in-diffused diodes are, however, extremely low in comparison with liquid epitaxial diodes.' Although efficiencies as high as 2 x 1O-3 have been reported, values from 10-6 to 10-4 are generally obtained by typical diffusion techniques. Out-diffused diodes are known to be a little more efficient than in-diffused diodes. Nevertheless, the quantum efficiency is at most 7 x 10- 3 and ordinarily of the order of 10-4.8 NO results have been reported on heat treatment of either in-diffused or out-diffused diodes. This paper reports a marked improvement in the efficiency of the red emission observed for in-dif-fused diodes as a result of heat treatment after diffusion. The method described reproducibly yields diodes with external quantum efficiencies of 2 to 6 x 10-3. The observed dependence of efficiency on annealing time and on doping level will be discussed in terms of the lifetime of minority carriers and the formation of Zn-O complex pairs. EXPERIMENTAL A) Diode Fabrication. The n-Gap crystals used in this study were grown from a saturated gallium solution by a slow cooling method.8 The Gap content in the gallium melt was fixed to 10 wt pct corresponding to a growth temperature of about 1100 Tellurium was chosen as the n-type dopant and added to the melt in concentrations ranging from 0.001 to 0.06 at. pct. Oxygen was added in the form of Ga2O3, whose concentration was varied from 0.004 to 0.2 mol pct. The resulting crystals were platelets with well-developed (111) surfaces. Typical electrical properties were Hall mobilities of 130 to 30 sq cm per v-sec and carrier concentrations of 1016 to 10" cm-3 at room temperature. Diodes prepared from crystals with relatively low doping levels, in which u = 130 to 100 sq cm per v-sec and n = 0.6 to 6 x 1017 Cm-3, were examined in detail. The p-n junctions were produced in these n-Gap crystals by the diffusion of zinc from the vapor phase by the following procedure. The platelets were carefully lapped on both sides to a thickness of 150 to 200 u while maintaining the (111) orientation. After being etched in hot aqua regia, the crystals together with the zinc were sealed in an evacuated 12 mm ID quartz ampoule 20 cm long. JESSE L. JONES,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-I would like to ask Miss Erskine if down-draft has been used in any of the foundries where heavy fumes have to be removed, instead of the overhead draft.? L. -ERSKINE.-The system of overhead draft to remove heavy fumes has been very much more successful. The entire efforts of the New Jersey Department of Labor in regard to stabilizing conditions in the foundry are the result of the physical examination of the foundryman himself on first-hand information as to the prevalence of the minor ailments and the bad timekeeping that naturally accompanies them. These ailments are a factor in not only increasing the labor turnover but in increasing the percentage of bad work as well. The physical exertion of the foundryman himself is of course an important factor. In certain standard shops the amount of energy expended runs from 11 to 13 tons of foot-pounds of energy a day. In certain shops on piece work, I found a record of the energy expended per day to run as high as 22 tons. In one shop, during the war period, the management established a bonus system, and the men increased their output from 60 to 100 molds a day. The result was an increase of some 60 per cent. in output, and an increase of 400 per cent. in defective castings. The question of the physical exertion in the unsanitary foundries, of course, is very much complicated by other factors, for which reason the department has devoted a good deal of attention to estimating what is a reasonable exertion in a sanitary, well ventilated foundry. We have met certain physical difficulties in the brass foundries that the iron foundries did not have. All that information is available through our Bureau of Industrial Information. The question of the physical energy exerted by the molder is found to have a very distinct bearing on the question of contracts, for the possibility of increasing production is balanced by the extra overhead involved. JESSE L. JONES.-I would like to ask if any evidence has been noticed of carbon-monoxid poisoning among the employees of the foundries.

The influence of carbon on tensile strength, tensile ductility, transformation kinetics, and grain growth characteristics of selected Ti-Mo base alloys was studied. No systematic influence of carbon in tensile strength or significant deleterious effect on tensile ductility was observed. There was a marked increase in transformation rate due to carbon. Dispersed carbides exert a marked inhibiting effect on grain boundary migration, and thus effectively prevent grain coarsening during solution treatment in the ß phase field. AS part of a research program directed toward the illumination of factors governing modes of transformation, transformation kinetics, and mechanical properties obtainable through these transformations by heat treatment, Ti-Mo base alloys were selected for study. The binary system is a characteristic phase diagram type which has been studied in some detail', ' in relation to transformation kinetics and mechanical properties. Although carbon bearing alloys have acquired a bad reputation, the possibilities of melting titanium under conditions which occasion some carbon pickup are very attractive. It is therefore of considerable importance to know whether carbon, present as a dispersed carbide phase, is actually deleterious when all other detrimental factors are minimized. Basic alloy compositions containing nominally 3, 5, 7, and 11 pet Mo were prepared with systematic carbon addition up to 1 pet by weight. Various of these alloys were subjected to a series of critical and definitive experiments to delineate the effect of carbon on the transformation behavior and associated mechanical properties. Experimental Procedure Alloys were prepared from 115 Bhn magnesium-reduced sponge titanium. This sponge analyzed ap- proximately 0.05 pet C. Ti-Mo and Ti-C master alloys were made by arc-melting the sponge with high purity (99.9 + pet) molybdenum and spectro-scopic grade graphite, respectively. Alloys were then prepared from the master alloys and sponge by double are-melting. One kg ingots were prepared by melting in a nonconsumable electrode furnace. These ingots were forged at 1000°C to '/z in. rods, and cleaned and processed into electrodes for the second melting operation. The final ingots were ground to remove surface defects, then forged again to 1/2 in. or 3/8 in. diam rods for processing to test samples. It is significant that all of the alloys at all carbon levels forged satisfactorily. For convenience, the alloys will be referred to throughout the text by their nominal analyses. Samples for the study of transformation rates were prepared from 1/2 in. diam round stock. They were then solution treated in a helium filled tube furnace at 1000°C for 30 min prior to the isothermal transformation treatments in lead bath furnaces. Temperature control in both cases was within ±3oC. Following the isothermal transformation treatments the samples were water quenched. These experiments were carried out before the general adoption of the resistometric procedure for kinetic studies. The data were therefore obtained entirely by metal-lographic analysis. M, temperature was also determined by the metallographic method. Shoulder-type tensile test pieces were machined from heat treated, 1/2 in. diam slugs to provide a 0.252 in. test diam and a 1 in. gage length. The isothermal-type heat treatments were chosen from previous data' to provide three levels of strength and ductility.

In an earlier paper1 measurements of contact angles due to the effect of xanthates on mineral surfaces were reported. The solutions in which these measurements were made differed widely from those of modern flotation circuits. It is intended, however, by introducing, one at a time, the other principal reagents of flotation, to approach gradually the solution composition of flotation liquors. The work now described is an attempt to determine the effect of one of the most important of these reagents—namely, sodium cyanide—on the establishment of air-mineral contact. The work has been carried out for the following companies: Broken Hill South, North Broken Hill, Zinc Corporation, Electrolytic Zinc of Australasia, Mount Lyell Mining and Railway, and Burma Corporation. Since the effect of cyanide is inseparably connected with the alkalinity, the results cited below deal with the mutual effects of alkalis and cyanide. Alkalis alone exert a significant effect on the air-mineral contact but comparatively large amounts are required. Since the addition of a small amount of cyanide greatly decreases the degree of alkalinity necessary for the suppression of contact at surfaces of any of the minerals experimented with (except galena) and since alkalis are rarely used alone in practice, little attention has been paid to cyanide-free solutions. It was shown in the previous paper that, excluding the dixanthogen effect, whenever contact was practicable at all in an ethyl xanthate solution the angle of contact was 60". There is, therefore, less necessity to measure equilibrium contact angles; in fact, the experiments herein described have generally been conducted with a view to determining whether contact is possible and not to measuring the actual value of the contact angle. The separations which have generally to be effected in dealing with complex sulfide ores are: (1) galena from sphalerite, pyrite, etc.; (2) sphalerite from pyrite and/or gangue minerals; (3) copper minerals from pyrite and gangue minerals; (4) pyrite from gangue minerals; (5) chal-

The year 1957 was one of declining metal price and production. Many lead-zinc-copper mines were forced to close, and the remaining mines limited production to stay more in line with demand. High cost of labor, supplies, and equipment and high taxes aggravated the situation. Some operators postponed or abandoned expansion programs because of uncertain economic conditions. Output was curtailed by elimination of over- time employment and reduction of the working force. The number of employes laid off was small- reduction in the labor force was accomplished by not replacing those who left a company's employ.

MARMORA mine is located a mile southeast of Marmora village in Hastings County, Ontario, 130 miles from Toronto and 150 miles from Ottawa. Highway No. 7 passes half a mile north of the mine and Highway No. 14 half a mile west. The Canadian National Ry. branch line between Trenton and Bancroft passes through the property just east of the open pit. The iron orebody at Marmora is the result of a replacement of Pre-Cambrian limestone with zones or bands of magnetite interlaid with metamorphic rocks and cut by later intrusives. The ore and associated Pre-Cambrian rocks are overlain by 100 to 150 ft of flat-lying paleozoic limestone. It is a low grade magnetite deposit that requires concentration before it can be used economically for production of iron and steel.

Results of research are presented examining the extent to which the analytical characteristics of the relatively distinct coal bands from a variety of coal seams can be related to each other. This paper dis-cusses an approach for developing a practical coal petrographic quality control program based on conventional analyses, most of which is part of the standard A.S.T.M. procedure. The work is a final follow-up to Part I of this series which was prepared by the authors as an approach to applying conventional coal petrography to single coal seams. Recent published work by the authors entitled Petrography for Coal Mining and Coal Prepration: Part I dealt with interrelating various chemical and physical properties of coal1 measured using conventional analyses made on distinct petrographic bands taken from single coal seams. Since most coal production facilities process coal from a single coal seam or from very closely related coal seams in the same area,2 emphasis on interrelating the properties within a single seam appeared appropriate. The distinct petrographic bands were analyzed on the assumption that such differentiated data would be more representative of a heterogeneous coal seam than the single analytical value commonly used to characterize each property of an entire seam.34 Effort was directed at demonstrating the extent to which the interrelated chemical and physical properties 5,6 could be developed into nomographs or petrographic standardization graphs. Thus, one analysis, determined on a series of petrographic fractions separated from a single sample, was used to estimate numerous other properties in each fraction by referring to the previously established petrographic standardization graphs. This conventional approach to coal petrography was undertaken as a suggested feasible means by which a few coal analyses could be employed to develope a more penetrating knowledge of the properties of coal from any given seam in order to monitor more extensively its performance at the point of utilization. Such procedures can support development of the type of in- formation commonly sought through automated testing and through the use of computers.7 The broad knowledge which can be developed through these procedures is intended for application in the generation of an analytical profile or broad characterization of coal. These estimates were not intended as replacements for individual coal analytical tests. In this expanded second part of the research program, distinct petrographic bands from nine coal seams in the Central Appalachian Region were physically and chemically analyzed to elucidate the extent to which this concept of conventional petrography could be broadened for application to numerous coal seams. In presenting this second phase of work, the relationships developed are presented individually and not in a connecting series of nomographs or petrographic standardization graphs as in the previous work, thus leaving open the combinations of possibilities to individual interpretation and application. MATERIAL AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK Nine coal seams, representing a wide range of rank, from the Central Appalachian coal fields were used in this study. The distinct petrographic bands from the Kittanning, Pond Creek, Jawbone, Tiller, Poca-hontas No. 3, No. 2 Gas, Eagle, Winifrede, and Pittsburgh coal seams were separated by carefully removing a portion of each band at the face of the seam. The following were determined: ash, sulfur, free swelling index, heating value, bulk specific gravity, volatile matter, Hardgrove Grindability Index, and Gieseler Plastometer measurements. Determinations, where procedures were available, were carried out using ASTM standard procedures.8 Bulk specific gravity was determined using a kerosene volume displacement procedure modified from a method applied by Headlee and McClelland of the West Virginia Geological survey,9 Those bands with a bulk specific gravity greater than 1.60, which is generally above the practical specific gravity cleaning range of bituminous coals, were excluded and no analyses were performed. Much of the initial organization of this second phase of work was developed through the extensive use of a computerized statistical monitoring program (see Ref. 4). YouR committee's secretary submits the following report, or summary, to the members of the committee, in an endeavor to lay before them a general review of the information so far received and also his own knowledge of the work as carried on at a number of plants, this being done in part to secure further information and suggestions from members and lead to a more effective means of furthering the work of the committee. It is suggested that more detailed data be compiled regarding engineering features involved, and that papers be contributed which will deal with the safeguarding of underground electrical installations. There are few operating companies which have not started a more or less systematic campaign to safeguard their employees from accidental injuries and unhealthful surroundings, but a great deal is to be gained by experience. All may welcome the advice and cooperation of those who have been actively engaged in the work and have demonstrated the results obtainable by organized effort, and it is, therefore, exceedingly gratifying to note the ready assistance and hearty cooperation rendered by the companies that may be truly termed pioneers in the movement. No solution of the safety problem is to be found in a skrict standardization of methods, rules or devices, as the various mining, milling and metallurgical practices present too many conditions differing broadly in general principles, but some standard system embodying principles already proven to be efficient should be created, which may be modified or elaborated to meet specific requirements of each individual company, or to fit working conditions as they exist in the various mining camps throughout the country. An industrial plant is primarily a business undertaking, therefore the economic side of a safety or welfare campaign is of importance. Many small operators have been deterred from undertaking the work by their belief that it involved an expense beyond their means, and one that could not be counterbalanced by greater efficiency or saving along other lines. This idea is generally due to a lack of knowledge of the actual costs of such work, and of the results secured by judicious selection of a method commensurate with the size and nature of the opera-

The milling of silver ores has arrived at a great degree of perfection in the mining districts of our Western States and Territories, and I hare thought the record of the practical results obtained at the present time, in a few of the principal districts, would prove of value arid interest to many of our members, both at home and abroad. An American silver mill is composed, in descending order from where the ore is dumped, of: 1st. A rock-breaker, usually of the Blake or Alden pattern; 2d. The battery of stamps, the number of which varies from 5 to 120, generally in batteries of 5 or 10 heads, so arranged that a single battery may stand while the others are running; 3d. The tanks where the crushed ore settles (if it is a met stamping-mill), or of a drying-floor if the crushing is done dry; 4th. Amalgamating pans ; 5th. Settling pans ; 6th. Agitators or pans in which mercury escaping in the tailings is caught; 7th. Blanket sluices, over which the tailings run, and where mercury and unamalgamated sulplides are saved. A reference to the engravings (see plate), which show one of the latest forms of an 80stamp silver-mill run by a turbine water-wheel, will show clearly the arrangement of the several parts. THE ONTARIO, UTAH, SILVER MILL. One of the best examples of a silver-mill, and at the same time one of the most successful concerns in the West, is the mill of the Ontario Silver Mining Company, near Salt Lake, in Utah. The general location of the orebodies and workings is illustrated by the vertical projection of orebodies of the district as shown in Fig. 1. The Uncle Sam, Southwest, and Czar workings have many connections to the surface through raises and extensive cracks that were caused by moving ground. These divisions are cool and are ventilated entirely by natural means. The Holbrook is ventilated partly by natural and partly by artificial ventilation, while the Spray, Gardner, Lowell; and Sacramento are ventilated entirely by mechanical means. In some of the divisions mentioned above a considerable quantity of air exhausts through shafts of adjoining properties.

A knowledge of the role of effects and interactions of chemical species is important in developing an understanding of the behavior of mixed minerals and natural ores in beneficiation processes such as flotation and flocculation. In this study the role of such species was examined for the calcite-apatite system by conducting flotation of each mineral in various supernatants prepared by mixing with water. Supernatants of apatite and even that of calcite depressed the flotation of calcite markedly in the pH range of 5 to 13. Addition of Ca(NO3)2, K2C03, and K3P04 also produced definite effects under various pH conditions. Apatite flotation was also affected by the mineral supernatants and by carbonate and phosphate solutions. The results are analyzed in terms of the surfactant's solubility properties and the mineral's electrochemical and dissolution properties. While depression of calcite flotation by the dissolved species is found to be governed by depletion of oleate by bulk precipitation, the depression of apatite flotation is caused by the carbonate and phosphate species in the system. Turbidity measurements and a thermodynamic analysis of possible interactions in the system support these considerations. The effect of the supernatant of minerals on their own flotation suggests the important role of kinetics of various surface interactions in comparison to that of mineral dissolution.

This DaoerAA calls to attention for the first time, to the writer's knowledge, a purported recovery of oil by substantially horizontal gas cycling that is considerably in excess of 50 per cent of the oil originally in place. The average angle of dip along the path of travel of the gas is less than one degree of arc. The best recovery by gas cycling previously brought to the writer's attention1 occurred in the case of the Mile Six Field in Peru, where about 68 per cent of the original oil in place has so far been recovered. In this case, however. the recovery was greatly aided 1)y the high dip angle of about 17.5". An approximate estimate of recovery was made by the method developed by the writer' for the case of the Cook Ranch Field, using an average relative permeability ratio function dictated by past experience with a number of good quality sandstones. A result of about 40 per cent recovery of the original oil in place wa* obtained after the 8.5 pore volumes of cumulative gas cycling undergone by the Cook Ranch Field. Tile writer desires to emphasize what appears to him as the sound engineering practiced at Cook Ranch, and also the care attending the taking of data and the high quality of the calculations made. It is impossible to take issue on factual grounds with any of the conclusions drawn in the paper. It is, however, desired to point out the difficulty of explaining the unexpectedly favorable oil recovery on ordinary theoretical grounds. It would be of interest to know whether relative permeability ratios have been measured on the Cook sand. The operator is inclined to attribute some of the excess benefit to settling of the oil across the bedding planes into the lower part of the sand. It is difficult for the writer to appreciate the importance of such an effect, inasmuch as the concomitant opening of excessive vacated pore space in the upper part of the sand would he expected to cause excessive bypassing of the gas. WELGE Welge has poined out clearly the difficulty of applying material-balance procedures in calculating the Performance of low-pressure, dispersed gas injection operations. There can be no argument that even with the most favorable assumptions of K,/K,, and with cumulative gas cycling in excess of normal expectations, the calculated oil recovery will be considerably less than the 72.5 per cent recovery realized from this project to Jan. 1, 1951. There probably are at least two reasons for the unusually high recovery from this reservoir, the effects of which would be difficult or impossible to calculate by known methods: 1. The operator did not use the same injection wells for the entire operation, and exercised considerable control over producing GOR by changing the locations of injection wells whenever well performance indicated excessive bypassing. Fifty-six wells were used for injection, not over 29 of which were in use simultaneously. This procedure resulted in frequent shifting of the fluid movement patterns in the reservoir and undoubtedly increased the ultimate recovery. The writer knows of no satisfactory procedure for calculating the effect of this practice. 2. Vertical movement of oil across the bedding planes of the reservoir rock hy gravity drainage tended to maintain a relatively high oil saturation, and hence a favorable K,/K, ratio, in the lower sections of the reservoir. As pointed out by Welge, this condition has aggravated the tendency for high producing GOR, but at the same time it has resulted in increased oil recovery. As may be seen from the performance charts for the various battery areas, operating (GOR'S have been quite high for the last several years of reported history.

Ince1 proposed that electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged particles was responsible for slime-coating. Del Giudice2 postulated the metathetic formation of a cementing compound. Wark3 suggested that prevention of slime-coating was related to peptization of the slime. In the experiments of Table I the technique employed was essentially that of del Giudice, with the difference that the particle was examined under a film of water rather than dry.4 In general, the polished particle was agitated for 2 min. in a pulp consisting of 12.5 grams of the slime (—200 mesh) and 50 C.C. of distilled water, washed in three baths of distilled water, and examined at 220 diameters with the Leitz Ultropak. Observations of Brownian movement were made at 850 diameters with dark-field illumination. Several of these experiments do not jibe with the metathesis theory. According to published solubilities,5,6 the lead salts of the anions in experiments c through g are more insoluble than lead carbonate, there- fore should prevent the formation of lead carbonate on the galena surface. In experiment i the calcium oxalate, which precumably was on the calcite surfaces, should have permitted the formation of a lead carbonate cement by virtue of its greater solubility. Experiments j through m show that the addition of lime accelerates the deposition of quartz onto a galena surface. The writer is unable to postulate a satisfactory cementing compound, according to the metathesis theory, to explain this effect.
