It is possible, by using pack-rolling instead of conventional rolling, to reduce a number of metals to thicknesses of 2µm or less. Such thinfoils are generally made at room temperature without intermediate annealing. In addition, pack-rolled foils fail by developing pinholes at thicknesses near 2µm instead of developing the shear cracks usually observed in cold-rolled ductile metals. This paper presents the results of a general investigation of the deformation substructure and texture developed in copper and iron pack -rolled from 130 to about 2µm thickness. Electron microscopy showed that in both metals a fine (0.2 to 0.5?µ m) deformation subgrain structure formed during pack-rolling; in neither case was this substructure grossly different from substructures formed during conventional rolling. The deformation texture formed in pack-rolled iron was quite similar to usual bcc textures; however, in the case of copper, the cube texture was stable during pack-rolling and the normal copper deformation texture was unstable. It is shown analytically that the constraining pack induced a large hydrostatic pressure in the foils during pack-rolling. The pinhole failure mechanism is attributed to the presence of the large hydrostatic pressure during pack-rolling; this strongly suppressed the growth of shear cracks. The stability of the cube texture in copper is also probably due to the unusuul stress distribution developed during pack-rolling. EXPERIMENTS at several laboratories have shown that very thin foils of the common structural metals and many of the rare earths can be made by "pack-rolling". 1-3 The technique was originally developed to make specimens for nuclear scattering experiments and foils for X-ray filters. It is also useful for making experimental laminar metallic composite bodies and foils thin enough for direct examination by ultra-high voltage electron microscopy without the need for special thinning techniques. Pack-rolling in the present context means a three-layer pack, with the material to be rolled into foil comprising the center layer. The outer two layers, which constrain the foil during reduction, are ordinarily austenitic stainless steel. Typically, a 130 µm (0.005 in.) metal strip can be reduced to a final thickness of 2 µm or less by this process. This is accomplished at room temperature, without intermediate annealing. It has been observed that foils produced by this process do not exhibit at any stage of their reduction the severe work-hardening found in strip rolled by conventional cold-rolling methods. Neither is the failure characteristic the same."&apos; Conventionally cold-rolled ductile metal strip fails by developing shear cracks on planes whose normals nearly bisect the angle between the rolling direction and normal to the rolling plane; these are planes of maximum shear stress. In pack-rolling this mechanism has not been observed; failure occurs by the formation of pinholes on the foil surface (penetrating the foil). If pack-rolling is continued the hole density increases. These differences in behavior imply the existence of appreciably different substructure in pack-rolled foils compared to substructure in conventionally rolled material, or perhaps that the geometry of pack-rolling has an effect on the foil behavior. This paper describes an investigation of deformation substructure and texture in some specimens of pack-rolled copper and iron, and some considerations of the stress distribution in the foils during rolling that result from the geometry of pack-rolling. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Three different materials were used for pack-rolling in the present work: soft copper sheet (99.8 pct Cu, 0.03 pct 0, electrolytic tough pitch) and two types of iron, Ferrovac E* and Armco iron. Each was "Crucible Stccl Co. initially in the form of 130 µm annealed strip with grain size ranges of approximately 10 to 40 µm. The initial texture of the copper (determined as noted below) was the normally observed cube type (001)[100]; there was evidence of a small amount of material in the cube-twin orientation reported by Beck and Hu.4 The initial texture of the Ferrovac E was similar to that reported for recrystallized iron by Kurdjumov and sachs,5 who list the principal orientations as {111}<112>, {001}<110> 15degfrom RD and a weak component {112}(110) 15 deg from RD. The starting texture of the Armco iron was not determined. Pack-Rolling Procedure. A four-high mill was used for all specimens. The work roll and backing roll diameters were 1.625 and 5.25 in., respectively. The peripheral roll speed of the work rolls was about 2.5 in. per sec. All foils were initially reduced from 130 to 100 µm by conventional straight rolling and then inserted into a pack, without any intermediate annealing, for further reduction. The pack consisted of an 0.033 in. (838 µm) thick 3 by 6 in. polished sheet of austenitic stainless steel, folded to make a 3 by 3 in. jacket. After folding, the jacket was given a small reduction to close the fold tightly before insertion of the foil. During pack-rolling a constant change in roll spacing was made every third pass. The roll-spacing change corresponded to a 5 pct reduction in thickness for a new pack. This approached a 10 pct reduction when the pack had decreased to about half its original thickness. SOME of the outstanding features of petroleum production in Illinois during 1923 were: (1) Sustained production from the older wells, due to cleaning and deepening; (2) good results from new drilling in a few localities; (3) large percentage of dry holes, many of which were ill advised tests, with a resulting high cost of the new production; (4) decrease in the number of productive wells in the state; (5) low average price of crude petroleum, a serious factor over the entire country. FIG. 1.-ANNUAL TOTALS OF ILLINOIS PRODUCTION. The total production of Illinois for 1923 was 8,710,000 bbl.,1 a decrease of 7.2 per cent. from that of 1922. Of this amount, it is estimated that about 8,500,000 bbl. were produced by old wells, many of which had been cleaned and deepened somewhat, and approximately 210,000 bbl. were obtained from the new wells drilled during the year. About 95 per cent. of the oil comes from the southeastern field in Clark, Crawford, and Lawrence Counties, where production is almost entirely from Pennsylvanian and Mississippian rocks. Extensions of the productive area were made in Clark, Wabash, Marion, and Jackson Counties. Some important gas development has been accomplished near Jacksonville, in Morgan County, and at Gillespie, in Macoupin County.

An informal discussion on the application of physical chemistry to steelmaking was held during the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February, 1929. Alexander L. Feild presided. In opening the session, Mr. Feild said: We are all familiar with the cooperative mining and metallurgical studies that were begun in 1920 by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and the Mining and Metallurgical Advisory Boards, and in particular with the work on the physical chemistry of steelmaking which was launched under the technical direction of Dr. C. H. Herty, Jr., in May, 1926. It was this work at Pittsburgh more than anything else that was the immediate cause of the formation within the Institute of a committee on the physical chemistry of steelmaking. During the latter part of 1927 a small group of Institute members interested in. the general subject of the physical chemistry of steelmaking undertook the organization of a subcommittee within the Iron and Steel Committee, to foster an active interest in this comparatively new field among the Institute membership and to obtain papers for publication in the Transactions, covering the various phases of the general subject. This plan was conceived by C. E. Meissner, to whose active efforts at the outset as well as during the past year is largely due whatever measure of success the plan has thus far attained. The subcommittee, now a committee of the Iron and Steel Division, was recognized and formally made a part of the Institute&apos;s organization at the February, 1928, meeting. As originally organized and as const,it,uted during the past year the committee has been made up as follows: C. H. Herty, Jr., C. D. King, A. B. Kinzel, John Johnston, C. E. Meissner, L. F. Reinartz, R. B. Sosman, and A. L. Feild, Chairman. Dr. C. H. Herty, Jr. has just been elected chairman for the coming year and C. E. Meissner has been reelected as secretary. From the outset it has been the settled policy of the committee to make membership an annual rather than a permanent matter and to reconstitute in part the membership of the committee each year by dropping a certain number of members and adding new members. THE writer became convinced, many years ago, that the generally accepted values of the coefficient of friction for lubricated surfaces were not applicable to such heavy machinery as he had been called upon, in the course of professional work, to design, to construct, and to operate. Experience frequently seemed to indicate, also, a wide departure, in such cases, from the accepted "laws of friction." In the year 1869, or earlier, he invented an apparatus to redetermine these laws and these coefficients for a wide range of temperatures, pressures and velocities. The construction of the machine was delayed, however, some time, and no experiments were made for several years, when, finally, the construction of the apparatus was commenced in the workshops of the Stevens Institute of Technology, and experiments were begun in the Mechanical Laboratory organized by the writer in connection with the Department of Engineering. These machines have now been in use about five years, and have furnished an immense amount of valuable information. Those now in use are of two styles: one designed and built by the Class of 1877, Figs. 1 and 2; the other a much larger machine, Figs. 3 and 4. The first has been already frequently described,* and a working drawing of the second has been also published.† For convenience, engravings of both are herewith reproduced. In the “&apos;77 machine,” a journal, F, is made on the overhung extremity of a shaft carried in the two bearings, B B&apos;. The effects of reactor irradiation on age hardening in a Cu-2 wt pct Be alloy have been investigated in two neutron-energy ranges. During some of the irradiations, specimens were exposed to high-energy fission neutrons which passed through a boron-10 shield; during other bombardments, the boron-10 was omitted and specimens were irradiated in a reactor thermal column, or the fuel configuration was modified to increase the thermal-neutron flux at a location in the core. Differences in length, X-ray diffraction angle, and hardness indicated that low-energy neutron irradiation made a small contribution to changes in the measured properties. The influence of defects generated by knock-om with less than the Brinkman critical energy or by prompt (n,y) recoil is suggested as the cause of this effect. EXPERIMENTS designed to test the effects of reactor irradiation on the properties of age-hardening alloys have to the present time employed fluxes un-differentiated according to neutron energy. Billing-ton and Siegell in 1950 were the first to perform such an experiment and to compare the results with those obtained by thermal aging. These authors concluded that precipitation in a Cu-2 wt pct Be alloy was not enhanced by the radiation. However, 4 years later, Murray and Taylor,2 working with specimens of the same Cu-2 wt pct Be alloy, reported that an increase in density, hardness, and resistivity which followed reactor irradiation resembled changes associated with thermal aging at about 100°C. (It should be noted that these authors reported that higher aging temperatures caused a decrease in resistivity.) cupp3 reported hardness results similar to those of Murray and Taylor. Koppenaal4 showed that irradiation-enhanced precipitation and irradiation defect hardening were not simply additive but that they acted separately in an irradiated alloy. Kernohan et a1.,5 working with Ni-Be, offered evidence that beryllium was removed from solid solution by reactor irradiation and suggested that the mechanism was one of increased diffusion through the use of vacancies in the structure. piercy6 also found that more precipitate particles were formed by fission-neutron irradiation of a Cu-Co alloy which contained a small amount of particles before irradiation. He proposed that the additional particles were caused by an appreciable amount of diffusion during the final cooling of displacement spikes. The retrogression of extant precipitate particles found by Murray and Taylor2 and Boltax7 as well as piercy6 indicated that nuclei were dissolved within a high-energy spike region and, upon resolidification of the perturbed volume, new nuclei precipitate and grow by enhanced diffusion. Bleiberg et al.&apos; and Konobeevski et al.&apos; explained phase changes obtained by irradiating fissionable alloys in terms of retrogression and re-precipitation in regions of high-energy spikes. Parsons and Balluffi10 used electron microscopy to verify that crystallization did indeed occur in displacement spikes which were formed in amorphous germanium by fast-neutron irradiation. The concept that low-energy neutron irradiation might cause structure-sensitive property changes in semiconductors by atomic recoil associated with the (n, y) reaction was first proposed by Schweinler" and walker." This thesis was tested by Cleland and crawford" and found to be valid. Coltman et al.14 exposed a variety of pure metals to thermal-neutron irradiation at cryogenic temperatures and attributed the resulting resistivity changes to the action of defects created by (n, y) recoil. The present work was undertaken to extend the concepts of Schweinler," walker," and Coltman et al.I4 to the case of an age-hardening alloy and to determine whether or not the action of defects produced by thermal-neutron irradiation would en-hance age hardening. My. first paper, read at the Cobalt Meeting of the Institute,1 July, 1907, dealt with the behavior of a small Wilfley table when concentrating galena from quartz, the table being fed with natural products, with sized products; and with classified products. Since galena, having a specific gravity of 7.5, is among the heaviest minerals ordinarily concentrated by Wilfley table, it was desirable that a similar set of tests upon a mineral of, lighter weight should be made. Chalcopyrite, of a specific gravity of 4, would have been the best mineral for this purpose, on account of its great importance as an economic mineral, but in carrying out the test, however, I was obliged to content myself with a cupriferous pyrite, the specific gravity of which was 4.68 and the contents in copper 8.80 per cent. Through the kindness of Mr. H. 0. Cummins, this material was obtained from Shasta, Cal.,in very pure, clean, homogeneous condition. It was broken by rolls to 2 mm. in size, taking care to make a minimum of slimes. The quartz used to mix with it was pure, white, New England quartz, broken in the same way to the same size. In studying the accompanying tables, it should be borne in mind that the material concentrated was of low copper-content, and in many cases the quantity fed to the machine was 1 kg: or less.. As a consequence of the smallness of the &apos;quantity treated it was very difficult to adjust the table and get it in condition to do its best work before the feed became exhausted, and for this reason many results were obtained which appear irregular.

The isothermal shrinkage rates of copper-powder compacts were determined in the temperature range from 760o to 1060oC. The rates for compacts fabricated from a pure spherical copper powder were compared, on the one hand, with those fabricated from a spherical powder containing a dispersion of aluminum oxide in the copper matrix and, on the other hand, with those fabricated from a pure copper powder having irregularly shaped particles. The irregular copper-powder compacts shrank much faster than the spherical copper-powder compacts and these, in turn, shrank faster than dispersion -strengthened copper -powder compacts. The experiments were run under a small external load. By varying this load, the stress dependence of the isothermal shrinkage rate could be measured for compacts from spherical-copper powders. This stress dependence was found to be approximately proportional to the 4th (dispersion-strengthened alloys) or 4.5th (pure metals) power of the stress. It is concluded that the material-trans port mechanism is due to dislocation climb rather than to Herring-Naharro creep. In this investigation the isothermal shrinkage rates of compacts made of copper powder with an average particle size of 70 g in the temperature range from 780o to 1060°C were studied. The aim of the investigation was to determine the mechanism of material transport responsible for the shrinkage of these compacts. Since the phenomenon observed in this investigation was shrinkage of compacts at high temperatures, it will be necessary to consider all the material-transport mechanisms possible in sintering. It is unlikely that evaporation and condensation, surface diffusion, or even volume diffusion of vacancies, in which surfaces of small radius of curvature are vacancy sources and those of larger radius of curvature vacancy sinks, will materially contribute to a sintering process involving shrinkage, i.e., one in which the centers of adjacent particles move towards each other. The two principal mechanisms which were considered were the so-called Nabarro-Herring mechanism and a plastic deformation mechanism by dislocation movement. Both of these mechanisms were originally conceived to explain creep, i.e., the plastic deformation of metals at elevated temperatures under a constant applied stress. The shrinking of metal-powder compacts which was studied in this investigation can be readily treated as a creep process. This means that the shrinkage rates observed are considered as creep rates under the influence of an applied stress. It is true that the stresses in sintering experiments are generally not constant but decrease continually with time, but, by considering creep rates or shrinkage rates over a relatively short time interval, the small changes in stress during this time interval can generally be neglected. Nabarro-Herring microcreep is a high-temperature deformation mechanism which is caused by a diffusional flow of vacancies from boundaries under a tensile stress towards those under a compres-sive stress. Herring1 has shown that in this type of microcreep the strain rate e is proportional to the applied stress and follows an equation of the form ma, aexp(-Q/RT) [l| where <j is applied stress, Q is the activation energy for self-diffusion, R is the gas constant, and T is the absolute temperature This type of creep can explain the shrinkage of a porous compact. The surface of the pores are subjected to the tensile stress of surface tension, while the grain boundaries are under a compressive stress also due to surface tension. Vacancies diffuse from the pore surface through the lattice to the grain boundaries, where they are eliminated. In order to maintain vacancy equilibrium at the pore surface the vacancies leaving the region of the pore surface are replenished from the volume of the pore, which means that the pores shrink.

The changes of line position and integral line breadth in the X-ray diffraction pattern of a polycvys-talline Cu-30Zn tensile test piece, incrementally loaded (and unloaded) up to fracture, have been an-alyzed in detail. The stacking-fault probahility, cv, increased linearly with increasing strain, E, wheveas the effective domain size, De(hkl), decreased with decreasing E-1 Over the greater part of the stress-strain curve the rate of work hardening was essentially constant (about 86 kg per sq mwz), and could be correlated with the slope of stage II of the single-crystal stress-strain curve. Consequently the theories of work hal-dening (particularly those parts relating to stage 11) as developed by Mott and Hivsch and others could be applied to the observations made on the polycrystalline brass. A relationship of the form Aa = Aao - MhklEhkl between the change, Aa, in the extrapolated lattice pararneter and the rvns strain, Ehkl, was derived and found to fit the results acceptably well. From this and other relationships developed in the papev it was estimated that the equilibrium stacking-fault energy of Cu-30Zn was between 8.4 and 12.5 ergs per sq cm, in fuirly close agreement with the (corvected) value obtained by Howie and Swann (1961)43 using transmission electron microscopy. The theory of work hardening in the jorm developed and recently presented by Hirsch (1964)3 successfully described all the pvesent observations. In order to test certain aspects of the theories of work hardening, as developed by Mott,1 Hirsch,2,3 Seeger et el,4-7 and others (for review see Nabarro, Basinski, and Holt8), several recent investigations have been concerned with relating the dislocation density, p, with the shear stress, 7 (and strain, y), applied to the specimen. The results of these investigations have shown that the square root of the dislocation density appears to be linearly related to the applied shear (or flow) stress for fcc as well as bcc metals and alloys. Furthermore, the relationship appeared to apply not only to the deformation of poly-crystalline specimens, but also to stages I and I1 of the deformation of single crystals. An expression of the form has thus come into wide use. Here b is the Burgers vector for a total dislocation, G is the shear modulus, and 70 and q are constants. A review9 of available values of q shows it to have values (at room temperature) in general between 0.3 and 0.6. Forms of Eq. [1] can be deduced from, or predicted by, the current theories, and the various constants adjusted so that they are compatible with the experimentally found value of q . No unique relationship has yet been found between the dislocation density and the applied shear strain. There are several serious objections to the use of Eq. 11]. In the first place, it relates the shear stress to the density of the dislocations without regard to their arrangement, type, or distribution; the significance of the relation may therefore be justly questioned.5 In the second place, the values of the experimental quantities usually substituted into Eq. [11 are those of the applied shear stress and the total dislocation density measured after unloaditzg. The dislocation density value that should in fact be used is that for the mobile dislocations present in the specimen when under the applied load.* Finally, in cases where the values used for p, the dislocation density, are those obtained by electron microscopy, p is subject to considerable error,&apos; both systematic and random. The corrections to be applied are still controversial. Dislocation densities can also be measured by etch-pit and other techniques,&apos;&apos; each having their specific limitations. An objective of the present investigation has been to obtain information about the dislocation configyration and distribution by analyzing the changes in the position and shape of X-ray diffraction profiles as a function of deformation. The X-ray techniques employed, also open to criticism, have certain advantages, however. Thus, although the X-rays diffract only from the surface layers to an effective depth of about 20 p, the measurements can be made while the specimen is under load. The value of the dislocation density obtained by the X-ray method is also subject to errors, which are different from those of the electron microscope. Though a considerably larger volume of material is sampled by the X-rays, thereby reducing some of the statistical errors inherent in the electron microscope data, the information obtained is less detailed and is dependent on the method of analysis used to obtain a value for the dislocation density. Nevertheless, important observations can be made because the aforementioned advantages outweigh some of the limitations. In the present paper the X-ray method is briefly described and applied to a brass specimens deformed in tension. The results are then discussed in terms of some of the current concepts of work hardening. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Details have already been extensively published elsewhere11-14 and therefore will only be dealt with briefly here. 1.1) Materials and Specimen Preparation. The uapor pressrcres of magnesium over binary alloys of magnesium with twelve of the yare-earth eletnetzts have been measured by the Knudsen effuion method in the temperature range 675° to 910°K. These vapor-pressure measurments were combined with data concerning the tevtrlitzul magnesium solubility and the vapor pressure of pure magnesinm to evaluale the standuvd free energies of pluase jormation. These free-etzergy values indicate that the CsCl structures of the heacy rave earths tend to be somewhat less stable than those of the light rare earths. This dif-]eying- behaviov covrelates with differences which have been obsevz~ed in other alloy systetns wherein a phuse appeurs, disappeavs, or changes crystal stvucture as the atomic number of the rare-earth com-ponent is changed. This behauior also appears to correlate with the struclurul rariations within the rare-earth elements themselves, and it is speculated that cariations in the spatial extent of the 4f orbitals are responsihle. STUDIES of the phase relationships and crystal structures in the binary systems between rare-earth metals (lanthanons) and magnesium are extensive but far from complete. However, the currently available information1-10 does produce a rather interesting pattern. This is illustrated in Table I. If one excludes europium and ytterbium from consideration because of their generally atypical behavior, it can be seen from the table that the phase relationships in the magnesium-rich regions show a distinctly different pattern for the lighter lanthanons as compared to the heavier lanthanons. For the lighter lanthanons, LnMg2 phases occur from lanthanum to gadolinium with the cubic MgCu2 structure, LnMg3 phases occur from lanthanum to terbium with the BiLi3 structure, and magnesium-rich phases occur from lanthanum to gadolinium with stoi-chiometries between Ln5Mg42 and LnMg12. In contrast, for the heavier lanthanons, those LnMg2 structures which have been examined have the hexagonal MgZn2 structure, LnMg3 phases have not been observed beyond terbium, and the magnesium-rich phases occur with the a manganese structure near a stoichiometry of Ln5MgZ4. The heavy lanthanon-magnesium systems thus appear to be analogous to the Y-Mg system""2 wherein YMg has the CsCl structure, YMg2 has the MgZn2 structure, and the region Y4Mgz5-Y5Mg24 has the a manganese structure, and no other intermediate phases are observed. Similarity in alloying behavior between yttrium and the heavy lanthanons occurs commonly, and on this basis it seems likely that LnMg2 phases will be found with the MgZn2 structure in the binary systems of dysprosium, thulium, and lutetium with magnesium when the appropriate investigations are made. In the case of the magnesium-rich phases of the lighter lanthanons, only the Ce-Mg phase relationships have been investigated thoroughly and in detail, and until similar investigations are made for the other systems there will remain questions as to which magnesium-rich stoichiometries represent equilibrium phases and what systematic variations occur in the sequence from lanthanum to gadolinium. Thus the data in Table I show that only the LnMg phases occur with the same crystallographic structure throughout the sequence from lanthanum to lutetium. It was speculated that the relative stability of these LnMg phases might vary from one lanthanon to the next in such a way as to presage the differences which occur among the more magnesium-rich lanthanon-magnesium phases. We would like to thank Mr. Mandolesi for his informative paper on rails from strand cast steel. The chemical and structural properties of the strand cast steel were of particular interest to us. We would like to supplement his excellent report with some of Inland&apos;s findings from our Caster with submerged nozzles and strands reduced in line from 7" x 7" to 5-5/8" square cross section. Inland has conducted extensive segregation studies on AISI 1049 steel - Fine Grain 0.50% carbon and 0.75% manganese. Based on approximately 80 heats, our normal segregation pattern results in analyses of .49% carbon in the center, and 0.50% carbon at the midway and edge position. The sulfur analysis averages .025% in the center, .027% midway, and .026% at the edge. Note the slight negative segregation between the center and midway position. This steel, being lower carbon and probably cast nearer the liquidus, resulted in less segregation than the 0.80% carbon rail steel.

The analyses which have been made by the writer according to the method described below were made as part of Professor Withey&apos;s investigation of the concrete aggregates1 of Wisconsin, in the hope of throwing light on the extent and nature of the influence of the mineral-ogical constitution of aggregates upon the properties of the concrete and mortar made from them. This method was found most satisfactory after four weeks of experiment and modification. It attains an accuracy quite sufficient for the purpose of the analysis, and is fairly rapid. mineralogical analyses may be thus made at a cost considerably less than that of chemical analyses of a similar degree of completeness. The results obtained by this method should not vary in any item by more than 1 per cent. of the total weight of the sample, and may be made very much better than this by the exercise of greater care in the microscopic counting (see below). The accuracy of the hand sorting is of course dependent upon the experience and carefulness of the analyst. After a month&apos;s practice, the writer was enabled to turn out these analyses at the rate of four in 33 hr. of working time. It was found most economical to handle four samples at once. The samples analyzed weighed from 290 to 340 g. each. The same method could be applied to larger or to smaller samples, within reasonable limits. The following list covers the necessary apparatus and equipment: 1 good balance capable of weighing accurately to tenths (or, better, hun- dredths) of a gram, and of handling quantities up to 200 g. in weight. 1 Westphal balance, registering densities to two or three decimal places. 1 Meker or Bunsen burner, and gas supply. 1 nest of sieves, 10, 20, 40, and 100 meshes to the inch.

A $5000 contract to explore for asbestos in Marinette County. Wis., has been entered into between the Government and the Star Mining Co. of Madison, Wis. The Government will contribute 90 pct or $4500 to the cost of the project. The United States presently produces about 8 pct of its asbestos requirements. "Sulphur stockpiles are at a minimum for national security arid must not be further reduced," was the warning given by L. M. Williams, Jr., president of Freeport Sulphur Co. He stated that although the long-range outlook is favorable , current sulphur production cannot meet the demand and as a result the United States faces a crisis in the coming months.

Seven mines with important production records in the Coeur d&apos;Alene lie adjacent to the Gem stocks —the Frisco (Gem), Hercules, Interstate, Rex (Sixteen to One), Success (Granite), Sunset, and Tamarack. Old records are incomplete, but available data given in Table I show these mines have produced 10.550,721 tons of ore containing more than 50 million oz of silver, more than 1.5 billion lb of lead, and about 1 billion lb of zinc (approximately 1.25 million tons of lead and zinc combined). Average ore grade is 4.8 oz of silver per ton, 7.2 pct Pb, and 4.6 pct Zn. This impressive production represents about 12 pct of the District&apos;s yield. At present metal prices, with modern beneficiation, the gross value would be more than $400 million. THE GEM STOCKS The Gem stocks, considered to be outliers of the Idaho batholith of Late Cretaceous age, are located in the northern half of the Mullan quadrangle, and extend from the town of Gem, Idaho, along a strike of N30°E for a distance of approximately five miles. They occur as two major masses of monzonitic rocks commonly referred to as the North stock, which covers an area of 1.1 sq miles, and the South stock, which covers 2.6 sq miles. The areal pattern is roughly club-shaped, the North stock representing the handle and the South stock the head of the club. Two and a half miles west and five miles northeast are two groups of smaller stocks, isolated from the main masses but of the same general rock type. This discussion is limited for the most part to the North and South stocks. At the north end, where the intrusion is about 3200 ft wide, the walls are about parallel and dip very steeply west. At the south end, where the mass is about 7000 ft wide at surface, the walls dip away from each other at moderately steep angles. An aeromagnetic survey&apos; detects and outlines with surprising accuracy the two main stocks. as illustrated on the magnetic contour map (Fig. 2). Of particular interest is the location and shape of the magnetic anomaly representing the South stock. The anomaly is centered over the south end of the outcrop, and a westerly extension joins it with a smaller anomaly over the Dago Peak stocks. The latter anomaly, likewise, is located over the south end of the isolated stocks. This pattern suggests the intrusion has greater extent at depth to the south and west. Though correlation between the Dago Peak stocks and the larger masses is suggested, the controversial aspects of the Dobson Pass fault, which separates the two areas, casts doubt on a correlation. Topographically the monzonite stocks are ignored by the drainage pattern indicating these rocks, and the invaded rocks of the Lower Belt Series react similarly to erosion. The drainage patterns of Nine Mile and Canyon creeks cut indiscriminately across the monzonite-Belt contact, resulting in both valleys and ridges in the southern end of the intrusion. Nine Mile Creek traverses diagonally the entire five-mile length of the stocks. The monzonite rocks of the intrusion are referred to locally as granite, but granite is rare and the rocks comprise a wide variety of types. Their characteristics, described in detail by F. L. The Bradford field of northwestern Pennsylvania and adjacent portions of New York state has attracted world-wide attention in recent years on account of the remarkable success that has been attained in the application of water-flooding as a means of increasing the extraction of oil from a pool that had almost reached the economic limit by ordinary production methods. It is one of the few large oil fields in which artificially conducted water drives have thus far proved successful, although many attempts have been made to apply them elsewhere. As detailed a knowledge as possible of the character of the producing sand in this field is therefore of considerable interest, not only from a scientific but also from a practical standpoint. Outside the Bradford field, such knowledge should aid operators in determining whether or not their sands are amenable to flooding. In the Bradford field itself flooding operations are not uniformly successful over the approximately 85,000 acres of productive area, due in many instances primarily to variations in sand conditions. A knowledge of just what these variations are would often be a great aid in overcoming the difficulties, or else would save considerable sums of money which might otherwise be wasted in experimenting in areas where the chances of success are very small. Realizing that more precise information in regard to the nature of the reservoir rock was essential to improvements in the methods of oil recovery, the Northwestern Pennsylvania Oil Producers Assn., by private subscription of its members, took a core of the Bradford sand from a well 1/2 mile west of Custer City, Pa., during the spring of 1925. The Forest Oil Co. also took a core of the same sand from a well about 8 miles east of Bradford at that time. The cores were submitted to the United States Geological Survey for study and A. F. Melcherl has published the results of porosity determinations on the Custer City core.
