A qualitative pseudoternary solidification diagram for the Fe-S-O system modified by manganese is proposed and supported by experimental derivation of an isothermal section at 1475°C and substantially 1 pct Mn in the solid-metal phase. The solubility of oxygen in liquid iron containing 1 pct Mn and sulphur contents up to 0.9 pct has been measured at 1600°C and found to increase as the sulphur content exceeds 0.15 pct. AS has been pointed out previously,' all oxide and sulphide inclusions in steel, excluding mechanically entrained matter, result from modifications of the basic Fe-S-O system. Therefore, one method of attack on the problem of the mechanism of deoxida-tion and inclusion formation is to examine the influence of deoxidizers on the Fe-S-O liquidus diagram. This approach has been adopted in work on the subject being carried out at the Metals Research Laboratories of the Electro Metallurgical Co. and has resulted in the postulation of types of solidification diagrams for the Fe-S-O system modified with common deoxidizers. This method has been of considerable assistance in interpretation of the factors affecting the formation of inclusions.' For the most part, however, these diagrams have been highly speculative. They were constructed primarily by inference from the pertinent binary and ternary systems and from the appearance of inclusions produced by specific deoxidizers. Moreover, since the systems contain four or more components, simplifying assumptions and qualifications were necessary in order to permit their representation as modifications of the Fe-S-O diagram. Consequently, experimental confirmation of the type of construction employed for these diagrams is desirable, and the present paper is concerned with such evidence. The addition of manganese to the Fe-S-O system was selected for initial investigation. Manganese is an important component of practically all steel and is, therefore, of fundamental interest. Because of its great affinity for sulphur, manganese has a more profound effect on the sulphide side of the Fe-S-O diagram than any of the other common deoxidizing eletments. In addition, more quantitative information pertaining to the contiguous binary and ternary systems involving iron, manganese, sulphur, and oxygen is available than for the other deoxidizers. Fe(Mn)-S-O Solidification Diagram Many of the side diagrams of interest in connection with this system are known. The Fe-Mn binary has been well established by several investigators;% the Fe-O system has been clarified by Darken and Gurry;' and FeO-MnO diagrams have been published by Herty,5 Andrew, Maddocks, and Howat,6 and by Hay, Howat, and White.7 The Mn-O diagram does not appear to have been derived experimentally, but the portion of 'it that is of interest can be visualized easily from a consideration of the melting points of Mn and MnO and the fact that a broad miscibility gap must exist between them. The ternary Fe-Mn-O diagram has been discussed by Benedicks and Löfquist,8 Wentrup,9 and by Körber and Oelsen.10 Experimental study of the Fe-Mn-O system has been carried out by Körber and Oelsen and to a lesser degree by Chipman, Gero, and Winkler,11 Hilty and Crafts," and others. On the basis of published information, then, an outline of the Fe-Mn-O liquidus diagram can be constructed as illustrated by Fig. 1. In this, as in all succeeding diagrams, transformations such as the ?-? reaction in iron have been ignored for purposes of simplification. The arrows denote falling temperature. The San Manuel property is in town&ips 8S and 9S, range 16E, Gila and salt River Base and Meridan, State of Arizona. This area is in the Old Hat mining district, southern pinal county, and is about 31/25 miles southwest of the town of Mammoth on the San Pedro River And one mile south of the Mammoth mine at Tiger, Arizona, The property consists of over 150 contiguous lode claims. The old Hat district was prospected prior to the civil war, but there was little or no production until 1881.1 The chief producers have been the Mammoth and Mohawk mines, now consolidated and operating as the st. Anthony Mining and Development Co., Ltd. Production to 1936 was $5,200,000, of which 83 pet was gold.2 Since 1940 the production has been chiefly lead and zinc, and some molybdenum and vanadium. There are a few small properties in the vicinity that have produced very minor tonnages of copper ore. In the San Manuel group there are claims which have been held continuously from 1906 to the present time, and at least two churn-drill holes were put down on or near the outcrop in 1917. No logs for these holes are available, but it is assumed that the grade of copper encountered was not sufficient to encourage further exploration. A small amount of ore has been shipped from open cuts on the San Manuel outcrop area, but there is no record of the tonnage Or grade. It is estimated that not more than 50 tons were mined. These cuts, plus a few shallow shafts and some short adits indicate limited and unenthusiastic prospecting at San Manuel. In 1942, through the efforts of James M. Douglas, R. B. Giffin, Victor Erickson, and Henry W. Nichols, owners of the Sari Manuel group, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and War Production Board authorized the United States Geological Survey to investigate the property, and by their recommendation, the United States Bureau of Mines was authorized to put down a limited number of churn-drill holes. The Bureau of Mines carried On drilling from November 1943 to February 1945 Seventeen holes were drilled, varying from 305 to 1990 ft in depth. The property was brought to the attention of Magma Copper Co. in June 1944, and an option agreement was made with the Owners. Subsequently, a group of claims lying north of the original group and held by the Apex Lead Vanadium Mining Corp, and a group to the east held by the Quarelli family, were optioned. A drilling program was laid out to conform to the Bureau of Mines pattern, and drilling started in December 1944 Sari Manue1 Copper Corp. was incorporated September 1945, and has carried on the exploration program to the present time. DURing the past 5 years no subject has aroused more interest or received more attention among mill operators than flotation. One reason for this is, undoubtedly, the remarkable success of the process in Australia where that country has risen to the position of furnishing one-fifth of the world's supply of zinc. The plant of the Butte & Superior Copper Co., designed by James M. Hyde in 1912, was the first important large flotation plant in this country; other installations have been made since then with considerable frequency, particularly so in the last 2 years. Without going into complete detail, it may be safely said that although flotation is a highly successful commercial process, it is more or less on an empirical basis. Upon scanning the literature, it is found that the flotation investigations have, in the main, dealt with a solution of the problems which accrue to practise; until recently no attempt was made to remove the difficulties in the way of the formulation of a consistent and harmonious theory. Of late this phase of the work has been receiving considerable attention, particularly by the United States Bureau of Mines at its Salt Lake City station, by the Mellon Institute at Pittsburgh, by the General Engineering Co. at Salt Lake City, by many of the mining schools, and private individuals almost ad infinitum. There is, at present, an enormous amount of laboratory work being carried on in flotation research, and probably the time is not far away when a generally acceptable explanation of flotation phenomena can be set forth. However, at this time, it seems as though the current technology is befogged with a superabundance of contradictory evidence; this confusion can only be dispelled as time proceeds and the knowledge of the subject becomes more complete. Many phenomena are supposed to contribute to the flotation of minerals, whether in whole or in part is a mooted question. I shall only sketch roughly the present tendency of ideas and make no reference to the first early and crude notions which have little value other than histori-

The analysis of Kikuchi pattersns of exct ovientalions from single cryslals and paired Kikuchi lines from single and overlapping crystals is shown to be useful and quanlitalve and is applied to Phase transfovnzcitions including ordering, spinodals, mavten-silic, and nuclealion and growth pyocesses. 112 pinciple, the analysis of exacl orientations enables the crystal system and the Bravais lattice of a crystal to he determined. The advantages of the davk-field imaging technigure for detecting vevy small precipitates are also described. ALTHOUGH Kikuchi electron-diffraction patterns were first observed nearly 40 years ago,' little systematic application seems to have been made of them, until fairly recently during electron microscopy, when their usefulness in contrast experimen and for determining exact orientations8'9 has been pointed out. With the availability of gonio-metric specimen tilting stages it has now become possible to make much wider use of diffraction patterns, particularly the Kikuchi pattern, which is the main subject of this paper. The treatment presented here is not exhaustive but it is hoped that it will stimulate more use of Kikuchi patterns during electron-microscopy investigations. The Kikuchi pattern is formed as a result of Bragg diffraction of the inelastically scattered electrons produced during the interaction of the beam and thick specimens, The important feature of these patterns is that they give an accurate representation of the symmetry of the crystal being investigated, so that it is possible to identify crystal systems and even the Bravais lattice. This means that new structures, e.g., formed in phase transformations, may be identified during normal electron microscopy, so that Kikuchi-pattern analyses considerably extend the uses of the electron microscope. Recent work has also shown that dark-field images are more informative than bright-field images, particularly, for observing small precipitates. The second part of this paper discusses some applications and advantages of dark-field imaging in studies of two-phase systems. 1) DIFFRACTION PATTERNS 1.1) Spot Patterns. Electron-diffraction spot patterns have their limitations because of the importance of the form factor on the intensities and shape of the reciprocal lattice points. Because of the extension of these points into relrods, reflections are possible over a large angular range (+5 deg) and the patterns from thin regions can be complicated because second-layer relrods intersect the reflecting sphere. Spot patterns can thus give only an approximate idea of the crystallography unless the foil is tilted into exact orientation. In this case the spot pattern is symmetrical, with equal numbers of spots on the positive and negative zone directions about the origin. Such cases are necessary for structural analyses and have been used recently to determine the crystal structure of the ordered Ta64C phase." Exact orientation means that the plane of the reciprocal lattice lies exactly normal to the incident beam as shown in Fig. 1(b). It should be noted that in exact orientations the angle of reflection is less than the exact Bragg angle 9 so that the reciprocal lattice points lie to the outside of the sphere, Fig. 1(b). This deviation is denoted by the parameter s and in the usual convention4 s is negative for exact orientations and, of course, zero at the exact reflecting position shown in Fig. l(a). In order to avoid secondary reflections from thickness relrods it is advantageous to work in thicker regions of foils. Diffraction from thick regions may also produce Kikuchi patterns and as dis-

IN the art of roasting sulfides it is well known that the lower the temperature and the higher the pressure of SO, the larger will be the amount of sulfate present in the product. However, the mechanism of sulfate formation is not generally understood. The following experiment" demonstrates in a direct way that, in the roasting of Cu2S, the sulfate forms from the reaction of Cu2O, formed by the oxidation of Cu2s, with gaseous SO, (or SO3) and 0,. Thus, the sulfate does not form at the sulfide surface. The reaction at the sulfide surface is the same whether or not sulfate is formed. Using an indirect method, Ong, Fassell, and Wadsworth' infer that sulfate forms after oxidation, during the roasting of sphalerite, agreeing with the observations of this paper. The method presented here of demonstrating that sulfate forms after formation of Cu2O is to roast a sample of Cu2S and then to locate and identify the phases formed.' A solid cube of cuprous sulfide, made by melting Fisher reagent grade Cu2S powder and measuring about 1.5 cm on edge, was placed on a Nichrome wire grid suspended over the top of an Alundum combustion boat. The assembly was placed in a tube furnace at 600°C and oxygen gas, flowing at 0.60 liters per min, was passed around the specimen for 24 hr. The furnace tube diameter was 1.5 in. The partially roasted sample was removed from the furnace and impregnated with resin No. BR 0014, obtained from the Palmer Products Co., and the impregnated sample was then mounted in Lucite. A cross section was obtained by grinding and the surface was prepared by the following steps: 1) grinding—60 grit, 3M disk, dry; 2) preliminary polishing —60 through 600 grit, 3M disk, dry; 3) polishing— 8 µ diamond putty, silk cloth; and 4) final polishing —1evigated magnesia in isopropyl alcohol, Selvyt cloth. The color micrograph of the polished surface is shown in Fig. 1. The layers present in the micrograph are given along the side. The comwositions of the various layers were established by Debye-Scherrer patterns. From this evidence the following sequence of reactions which occur in the roasting of Cu2S is inferred: 1) The oxidation of Cu2S occurs with oxygen which has been transported through the oxide-sulfate layer by either gaseous or solid state diffu- sion. The products of this reaction at the Cu2S surface are Cu2O and SO,. 2) The SO, diffuses out through the pores in the Cu2O and finally reaches a position in the Cu2O where the oxygen pressure and the SO, pressure have values such that the thermodynamic conditions for the formation of CuSO4 are fulfilled. Then, the mixture of SO2, SO3, and oxygen reacts with the Cu2O to form CuSO1. 3) The CuSO, decomposes by the evolution of SO,, or SO, and O2, to form the basic sulfate. This is reasonable, since the SO, gradient will decrease toward the oxygen gas phase from the CuSO4 layer. 4) For this same reason the basic sulfate will decompose to form CuO. The above sequence of events is based on the assumption that diffusion through the oxide and sulfate layers, rather than the reaction at the sulfide-oxide interface, is rate-determining. This assumption is supported by the observation that these oxide and sulfate layers combined are almost nonperme-able to the flow of gases through them. In western Argentina, in the Province of Mendoza and the Territory of Neuquen, there is a series of solid bitumen deposits which are claimed to be the most extensive in the world. In a linear belt 500 km (311 miles) long, roughly paralleling the axis of the Andes but occupying a variety of positions with respect to the orogenic structures, more than 100 outcrops have been reported. Approximately 70 of these have been prospected, and some mining has been planned or attempted for about half this number. Limited tonnage, high sulphur content, inaccessibility, labor shortages, and disastrous fires have taken a heavy toll among these operations, and in 1947, only 4 deposits were being actively mined, but 8 more were being explored and developed with a view to placing them in production. Inasmuch as these deposits are currently yielding a substantial fraction of Argentina's limited domestic supply of solid fuels, a brief account of the deposits and of the small industry based upon them will provide a commentary on Argentina's fuel problem. Character of Solid Bitumens The solid bitumens of Mendoza and Neuquen are petroleum derivatives, as is indicated by the following ultimate analysis : Constituents Per Cent Hydrogen.................... 6.8 Carbon...................... 82.4 Nitrogen..................... 1.6 Oxygen...................... 2.7 Sulphur...................... 2.2 Ash.......................... 4.3 100. 0 In physical appearance they bear a close resemblance to coal and are commonly called carbon. Their specific gravity has an extreme range of 1.10 to 1.777 in 36 samples weighed, but the average is between 1.14 and 1.24. The material is black, lustrous to dull, with blocky to sub-con-choidal fracture. Though brittle, the purest material is softer than anthracite and exhibits slightly more cohesion. This bituminous material is generally known as asfaltita or asphaltite, but definitive chemical studies indicate that the term asphaltite or grahamite can be applied correctly only to the exceptionally pure material of the Auca Mahuida district in Neuquen. Some other name should be used for the chemically variable bitumens found in all other districts, and the designation "asphaltitic pyrobitumen" has been proposed by Carlos A. S. Piscione.1 At the present time these bitumens are finding favor as solid fuel and as a gas-producing medium. They yield heat values of 8650 to 9750 cal,2 or 14,500 to 16,750 Btu per pound, and in consequence of their excellent heating qualities and the scarcity of imported coal, they are marketed as far away as Buenos Aires at a price of go to 95 pesos, or approximately $22 to 23, per metric ton. In burning, the material swells and decomposes into solid, fluid, and gaseous fractions which burn violently though nonexplosively. Its combustibility has been responsible for disasters and virtually complete destruction at Mina La Es-peranza and Mina Santa Marta, and for minor mishaps elsewhere, as at Mina Escondida in August 1947.

IN an effort to employ cast steel of a stronger structure than that found in the annealed steel castings, the possibilities of heat treatment which will increase the strength without materially decreasing the ductility may be resorted to. The following abstracted report (which is a brief outline of what has already been clone by the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. at its shops and Test Laboratories at Altoona, Pa.) is of material interest, as it indicates what may be done with steel castings when properly treated, thereby permitting in railway service greater strength of cast steel parts without any increase in weight or space. The question of the heat treatment of alloy steel castings is not taken up in this paper. The obscurity formerly surrounding the heat treatment of steel has been for the most part removed by the development of our knowledge of the critical points of steel, pyrometers, furnace construction, and the testing of the finished product. The operations of the heat treatment proper will be taken up under the heads of (1) heating for quenching; (2) quenching; (3) drawing. (1) Heating for Quenching.-Heating for quenching is best conducted slowly, especially in the case of castings of variable thickness. Cracks may occur either in heating or in cooling, clue to different temperatures at different points of the casting. The castings should be thoroughly soaked at the maximum temperature (generally 1,500° to 1,600° F.), 1 hr. being sufficient for sections 1 ft. in thickness. The minimum temperature which will produce the desired hardening effect will, in all cases, be found to be the most satisfactory, as the grain coarsens when the critical range is exceeded to too great an extent. All temperatures should be governed by a checked pyrometer with the hot junction to the heated object, and with several couples in a large furnace to insure a uniform temperature.

THE responses to the request of the Finance Committee have been coming in with gratifying results, .but there have also been about a dozen letters received objecting in various ways to the voluntary subscription. These can be summarized as: First.-That the dues should have been increased, and thus impose the same burden on everyone. This would not have met the present situation, as under the constitution no increase could be effective until 1922. Second.-The Institute should 'live within its means, and reduce its expenses to correspond with its income. As far -as possible this was done by deferring the publication of Volume LXIV until 1921, although the papers published in that volume, were presented at the meeting in February, 1920. It is to avoid being obliged to do this again that the subscription is asked, as we feel that it is, a duty we owe to our membership_ to give them the papers presented at as early a date as possible.. Our financial situation is due to the very large increase in the cost of publication; owing to the high price of paper and printing. The cost of paper is now decreasing, and we hope that there will be' wage adjustments that will permit a lower cost for printing. Under present conditions each volume of our TRANSACTIONS costs three times as much as it did in 1917 and we would be able to publish only one' volume per year. Third.-That there are too many papers published that are 'of no interest to the writer of them .complaint.-This is undoubtedly true, but it must be remembered that the membership of the Institute includes all branches of mining and metallurgy and that all these branches are entitled to be' represented in our TRANSACTIONS by papers.

The cadmium-uranium system was studied by thermal, metallographic, X-7-ay and sampling techniques; special emphasis was placed on the establishment of the liquidus lines, The single inter metallic phase, identified as the compound UCd11 melts peritectically at 473°C to form a-umnium and melt containing 2.5 wt pct uranium. The cadmium-rich eutectic (0.07 wt pct uranium) freezes at 320.6°C. Solid solubilities in uraizium and cadmium appear to be negligible. Between 473°C and 600°C the liquidus line is retograde. NO publication relating to the cadmium-uranium phase diagram was found in the literature. The establishment of this diagram was of considerable interest to us because of a possible application of the system to the pyrometallurgical reprocessing of nuclear fuels. Analysis of liquid samples, metallographic examination, thermal analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis were used to establish the phase diagram from about 300° to 670°C. Particular emphasis was placed on the establishment of the liquidus lines. The same system was concurrently studied in this laboratory by the galvanic cell method.' Both studies benefited from a continual interchange of information. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Stick cadmium (99.95 pct Cd, American Smelting and Refining Co.) contained 140 ppm lead as the major impurity. Reactor grade uranium (99.9 pct U, National Lead Co.) was most often used in the form of 20-meshspheres. This form was particularly suitable because it does not oxidize as readily as finer powder. The liquidus lines were determined by chemical analysis of filtered samples of the saturated melts. The liquid sampling technique is described elsewhere2 alumina crucibles (Morganite Triangle RR), tantalum stirring rods, tantalum thermocouple protecthecadmiumtion tubes, Vycor or Pyrex sampling tubes, and grades 60 or 80 porous graphite filters were used. Uranium dissolves in liquid cadmium rather slowly. In order to achieve saturation of the melts it was necessary to modify the procedure of Ref. 2 by the use of more vigorous stirring and longer holding periods (at least 3 hr) at each sampling temperature. The samples were analyzed for uranium by spectro-photometry (dibenzoyl methane method) or by polar- ography. The analyses are estimated to be accurate to 2 pct. Thermal analysis was performed on alloys contained in Morganite alumina crucibles in helium atmospheres. Standard techniques were employed; heating and cooling rates were about 1°C per min. For the determination of the peritectic temperature, Cd-10 pct U charges were first held for at least 50 hr at temperatures in the range 435° to 460°C to form substantial amounts of the intermediate phase. For the determination of the effect of cadmium on the a-p transformation temperature of uranium, charges of Cd-25 pct U (-140+100 mesh uranium spheres) were first held near the transformation temperature, with stirring, to promote solution of cadmium in the solid uranium. The holding times and temperatures for these treatments were 18 hr at 680°C for the cooling run and 28 hr at 630°C for the heating run. Alloy specimens for X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination of the intermediate phase were prepared in sealed, helium-filled Vycor or Pyrex tubes. Ingots from solubility runs and thermal analysis experiments also were examined metallographically. Crystals of the intermediate phase were recovered from certain cadmium-rich alloys by selective dissolution of the matrix in 20 pct ammonium nitrate solution at room temperature. Temperatures were measured with calibrated Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples to an estimated accuracy of 0.3°C. However, the depression of the freezing point of cadmium at the eutectic is estimated to be accurate to 0.05°C because a special calibration of the thermocouple was made in place in the equipment with pure cadmium just prior to the measurement. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The results of this study were used to construct the cadmium-uranium phase diagram shown in Fig. 1. This diagram is relatively simple; it is characterized by a single intermediate phase, 6 (UCd11), which decomposes peritectically, and which forms a eutectic system with cadmium. The solid solubilities in the terminal phases appear to be negligible. An unusual feature of the diagram is the retrograde slope of the liquidus line above the peritectic temperature. Within certain limits, the fertility of a worn-out soil may be restored, deforested areas can be replanted, one year's wasted water-supply is followed by another; but coal and ores, once taken out, cannot be mined again, and should therefore be conserved with especial care. This means, however, not that mining should be restricted, but that it should be done most economically and with the minimum of waste.

Phase transformations have been studied in Ag-Zn alloys quenched from the high-temperature bcc 0 phase and lying in the composition range 37.4 to 50.0 at. pct Zn. On quenching, the alloy with the lowest zinc content transformed to massive a (fcc); all other alloys formed the ordered (3' phase. On deformation, a martensitic reaction took place forming a close-packed structure. At Lou' zinc contents transformation to this structure was complete. However, above 43 at. pct Zn a p.rogressively increasing amount of ß' was retained following deformation. The close-packed structure was fcc at lower zinc contents (under 47 at. pct Zn) and either hcp or a mixture of fcc and hcp at high zinc concentrations. The structures produced by cold working were unstable and on aging transformed to the ß' phase or the complex hexagonal to phase. For low zinc contents (under 43 at. pct) the fcc st-ructure transformed directly to the equilibrium To phase. With higher zinc contents, some 13' was retained following defownation, and on aging the amount of this phase relative to the close-packed structure increased. On further aging both structures transformed cornpletely to PO. Metallographic examination indicated that the nature of the deformation product depended very markedly on the mode of deformation. Tensile deformation gave a microstructure characteristic of thermal martensite. KING and Massalski1 have shown that an alloy of Ag-50 at. pct Zn quenched from the high-temperature bcc ß phase undergoes a low-temperature ordering reaction forming ß' which can be retained to room temperature. On deformation an hcp phase is produced, although this is unstable and the structure reverts completely to ß' on aging. In the present paper, the work of King and Massalski is extended to cover a wide composition range in the p phase, observations being made of the structure of the quenched 13 and of the effects of deformation and aging. The relevant portion of the Ag-Zn phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. King and Massalski have shown that close to stoichiometry the ß' phase is the equilibrium structure at low temperatures. The approximate composition range of this phase, taken from a recent paper by Pops and Massalski,3 is shown on the phase diagram. The locations of atom sites are very similar in the ß' and to structures, and the 4, structure can be derived from the 0' structure by a small movement of atoms mainly in the direction of the cube diagonal.4'5 However, the probability of filling any particular atom site by a silver or a zinc atom is markedly different in the two structures. The structure can be considered partly ordered but the arrangement of the ordered atoms is completely different from that in the p' structure and transformation from ß' to requires a large fraction of the atoms to change position. It has been shown that the ß' transformation is thermally activated involving normal nucleation and growth processes.5,8 Massalski and Barrett7 have shown that in the Cu-Zn binary the (3 phase can be retained in the ordered state to room temperature over a wide composition range. On deformation a new close-packed phase is produced, the structure varying from fcc to a mixture of fcc + hcp to hcp alone with increasing zinc concentration. It appears that an ordering reaction is necessary to retain the bcc phase to room temperature. In CU-Ga,8 the bcc phase cannot be retained to low temperatures as it transforms by a massive reaction above the ordering temperature of the ß phase. The structure of the massive phase is very similar to that in Cu-Zn, varying from fcc to fcc + hcp to hcp with increasing zinc concentration. The energy and force of interaction between a crack and a slip band have been calculated. When the distance between the crack and the slip band is greater than the dislocation spacing of- the slip band, the force on the cgrack is perpendicular to the slip band. The energy needed to propagate a crack against this force can be lawe enough to pevmit crack propagation parallel to noncleavage planes. SEVERAL recent experiments have demonstrated the occurrence of crack-slip band interaction in ionic crystals having a NaC1-type structure. Stokes, Johnston, and Lil have studied the nucleation and growth of cracks in MgO. From their observations, they conclude that slip bands have the ability to halt and stabilize cleavage crack nuclei. Gilman2 has shown that a crack, propagating along a (100) cleavage plane in a previously deformed LiF crystal, tends, at certain points within the crystal, to switch to (110) planes. He reasons that plastic deformation reduces the cohesive energy of the (110) planes below that of the (1130) planes, making possible (110) crack propagation. Keh3 has demonstrated that when indentations are made in MgO, crkcks form along (110) planes at the indentations. Gilman2 attributes the formation of these cracks to plastic cieformation. There is some doubt as to the formation of cracks on (110) planes. Kuznetsov4 in his discussion of crack propagation in rock salt, shows that splitting along (110) planes requires 1.76 times as much energy as splitting along a stepped (100) surface. MORE than 70 igneous pipes and dikes are known to occur in Cambrian sediments throughout an approximately circular area of about 75 sq miles in southwestern Ste. Genevieve County and southeastern St. Francois County, Mo., across the southern portion of the Farmington anticline, which is outlined in fig. 1. From evidence obtained from fossil fragments taken from some of the intrusive, and from the similarity in composition of the more basic intrusives to those of known age in surrounding states, these pipes and dikes are believed to be at least post-Devonian and probably Cretaceous in age. As first postulated by Rust, these intrusives are believed to represent explosion tubes, or diatremes, punched through great thicknesses of solid rock by gaseous pressure. The particular intrusive studied is located about 1 mile north of the small town of Avon at an elevation of 880 ft in the EM SES NE% of sec. 2, T. 35N, R. 7E. Outcrop is through the Bonneterre dolomite in two separated exposures. The larger outcrop extends east and west for about 50 ft along a tributary in a small ravine (fig. 2). The smaller exposure occurs as a few scattered patches over an area 20 ft square about 100 ft to the north. The area between the exposures is covered, but scattered patches of the Bonneterre dolomite outcrop throughout the area surrounding the diatreme. Where exposed, contact relations show the surrounding dolomite to be shattered and metamor- phosed to a fine-grained rock for a distance of 15 to 20 ft from the intrusive. The igneous rock occurs as a dark greenish-gray porphyry near the center of the diatreme and as a fine-grained, greenish-gray material containing lapilli and metamorphosed fragments of dolomite near the contact with the country rock. The most abundant original mineral of the porphyritic rock is olivine now largely serpentinized as the result of extensive hydrothermal alteration at time of emplacement. The most common constituent of the fine-grained rock, which occurs near the border of the intrusive, is calcite. Mica is a common constituent of both types of rock, occurring as tufts or

Also, if you used calcium carbide on carbon-saturated iron, would some effect hold back the reaction? P. M. Hulme (authors' reply)—As far as I know we have not worked on carbon-saturated iron. About 3½ pct C is the highest we have worked on. As far as cost goes, it depends on how much sulphur You have to take out. It will run anywhere from $0.75 to $2.00 a ton overall cost including the cost of carbide per ton of metal treated. That is, using the efficiencies that we show in this paper. We are getting better efficiencies now. T. L. Joseph (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minn.)—Did you say 2 lb of calcium compound? Mr. Hulme—That is based on 10 lb of calcium carbide per lb of sulphur removed. D. E. Babcock (Republic Steel Corp., Youngstown, Ohio)—We have run this type of desulphurization process at the blast furnace. We have desulphurized between 100 and 200 at the blast furnace and taken the iron right out of the furnace with an injector system. The process gave us quite varied results; stratified iron, high sulphur on the top and low sulphur on the bottom, and we decided it was impractical. Mr. Hulme Just what was the type of injection equipment? Dr. Babcock—Nitrogen gas for one injection method and we used fairly large gun equipment. We followed the same general type of pattern you show only on a larger scale. Mr. Hulme—It sounds very much like what we call the gale of wind method. We have very erratic results with that. Dr. Babcock—We have tried several types, and particle sizes. The operation was not satisfactory. Mr. Hulme—Of course, we have never tried it on that scale except on a continuous basis. That is the reason we abandoned the idea of working on 35 ton ladles on a batch principle and took it as it came out of the cupola and treated it on the fly on a continuous basis. Dr. Babcock—When you compare the relative effectiveness of the process as carried out, it does not give a very favorable comparison of that process which is already developed.
