IN the winter of 1941-42, muscovite mica was discovered by a young prospector, Justin Purdy, in the township of Mattawan, Nipissing District, Ontario, a few miles north of the small settlement of Eau Claire, which lies on the main Transcontinental Highway (No. 17) between Mattawa and North Bay. Muscovite had been known for many years to occur in the general Mattawa region, and various small efforts at production had previously been made by individuals working scattered deposits in the area. These minor activities, however, had never led to production of any consequence or the discovery of any important mica bodies. The Purdy finds were made in a heavily timbered, mountainous area lying about three miles north of the low-lying settled land along the highway, and in a section not hitherto prospected. The mica taken by Purdy and two partners from surface outcrops proved so remarkable in point of size of trimmed sheets that the find attracted considerable attention, and the area surrounding the three claims taken up by the prospectors was quickly blanket-staked by various interests. Though a number of other mica-bearing pegmatite dikes were 'found later on these stakings, none proved as rich as those on the original Purdy ground; very little commercial mica was obtained from them and attempts to develop them were short-lived. Purdy and his partners sold their initial production to dealers in Ottawa and Hull, where the Canadian mica industry long has centered. Young Purdy, unfortunately was killed in a motor accident in the early summer of 1942. His father continued mining operations for a few months and produced and sold a considerable amount of mica. In October 1942 the Purdy holdings were acquired by Inspiration Mining and Development Co. of Amos, Quebec, which had been active in staking in the area. This company formed a subsidiary, Purdy Mica Mines, Limited, to develop the property. Under the energetic management of Joseph R. Norrie, rapid progress was made, and production soon attained important proportions. Realizing from the outset the unusual character and potential value in the war effort of the Purdy discovery, the Metals Controller, Department of Munitions and Supply, at once arranged with the Department of Mines and Resources for an official geological report on the area, and also drew the attention of the War Production Board in Washington to what seemed likely to prove a highly important source of strategic-quality mica. A series of composite alloys containing a high volume of NiAl, Ni3Ah or CoAl, bonded with 0 to 40 vol pct of a ductile metal phase, were prepared by powder blending and hot extrusion. The binder metals were of four types: pure nickel or cobalt, near saturated solid solutions of aluminum in nickel and cobalt, type 316 stainless steel, and niobium. Sound extrusions were obtained in almost all instances. Studied or measured were the following: interaction between the alunzinides and the binders, room-temperature modulus of rupture values, 1500° and 1800°F stress rupture properties, hardness, structure, and oxidation resistance. Stable structures can be produced for 1800°F exposure, with interesting high-temperature strength and good high-temperature ductility. Oxidation resistance was excellent. A large number of experimental investigations have been made of the role of structure on the properties of cermets and composite materials. Gurland,1 Kreimer et al.,2 and Gurland and Bardzil3 have indicated the preferred particle size in carbide base cermets to be about 1 µ, with a hard phase content of 60 to 80 vol pct. The optimum ductile binder thickness was noted to be 0.3 to 0.6 µ.1 Complete separation of the hard phase particles by the binder is important in reducing the severity of brittle fracture.' The purpose of the present study was to produce structures comparable to the conventional cermets, using a series of relatively close-packed intermetal-lic compounds rather than carbides as the refractory hard phase, and to study the effects of binder content and composition on both high- and low-temperature properties. The selected intermetallic compounds were particularly of interest because of the potential they offered in yielding room-temperature ductility. The highly symmetrical structures are known to possess high-temperature ductility and room-temperature toughness. Based on a ductile binder, the alloys were prepared by the powder-metallurgy route to avoid melting and subsequent alloying of the matrix, and were extruded at relatively low temperatures. It was expected that the composite alloy would retain useful ductility. In contrast, infiltration and high-temperature sintering led to alloying of the matrix and to decreased ductility. The systems Ni-A1 and Co-A1 were selected for this study. In the Ni-A1 system the compounds NiA1, having an ordered bcc B2 structure, and Ni3Al(?1), having an ordered fcc L12 structure, were chosen. In the system Co-A1 the intermetallic compound CoAl with an ordered bcc B2 structure was used. ALLOY PREPARATION The intermetallic compounds, see Table I, were prepared by using master alloys of Ni-A1 and CO-A1, with additions of either cobalt or nickel to achieve the desired compositions. The master alloy in crushed, homogenized form, was melted with pure nickel or cobalt in an inert atmosphere, cold copper crucible, nonconsumable tungsten arc furnace. The resultant intermetallic compounds were homogenized at 2192°C in argon, crushed, and dry ball-milled in a stainless mill to -100 and -325 mesh for the Ni-A1 compounds and to -325 mesh for the CoAl compound. Finer fractions were separated for some of the composite alloys. Several ductile binders were utilized. These included Inco B nickel, 5µ ; pure cobalt, 5 µ, from Sher-ritt Gordon Mines, Ltd.; fine (-325 mesh) niobium hydride powder; fine (15 µ) type 316 stainless-steel powder; and near-saturated Ni-A1 and Co-A1 solid-solution alloys, also in fine powder form. The niobium hydride was decomposed above about 700°C in processing of the compacts in vacuum to produce niobium powder. The Ni-7.1 pct A1 and the Co-5.3 pct A1 solid-solution alloys were prepared from pure nickel or cobalt and pure aluminum by nonconsumable tungsten arc melting under an inert atmosphere. The ingots were homogenized, lathe-turned to fine chips, and dry ball-milled in air to -325 mesh powder. These solid-solution alloys are designated NiSS and CoSS; see Table I. Subsequently the hard and ductile phases were dry ball-milled as a blend. Experiments clearly established the need to coat the hard particles with the ductile binder to optimize subsequent hot compaction by extrusion. Ordinary dry mixing usually resulted in nonhomogeneous alloys which were quite brittle. Conventional cermets are consolidated by liquid phase sinteiing or infiltration, which resulis in undesirable and uncontrolled alloying of the binder phase. For this study, a loose (unsintered) powder-extrusion process was emploved, minimizing reactions between binder and hard particle, thereby permitting much greater control of composition and structure. At Cobalt, Ontario, Canada, a lake was drained to facilitate mining, by the Mining Corpn. of Canada, during the spring and early summer of 1915. Previous to pumping out the water, great quantities of sands and slimes from concentrating plants had been discharged into the lake and during and after the lake's drainage, its basin was a receptacle for tailing products. As the writer was at work along the shore line as the lake was being drained, he had a good opportunity to observe the changes that took place as the water was withdrawn. Some adjustments between the incoming sands and the mud in the lake had taken place before pumping was commenced. One of the most interesting results was the appearance of a small dome in a path the writer traversed twice a day for several months; he remembers distinctly the difficulty of crossing this. Cobalt Lake owed its existence to the gouging out of a rock basin by glaciation. The long axis of the basin closely follows the strike of a thrust fault of about 500 ft. (160 m.) vertical displacement. The lake was originally shaped somewhat as shown. The length was about 3000 ft. (914.4 m.), the width at the lower lobe was about 1000 ft., and the width at the narrows probably 400 to 500 ft. The original depth of water varied from 20 to 30 ft. (6.1 to 9.1 m.), near where the island later was formed, to 60 to 70 ft. (23.6 to 27.6 m.) in the widest part of the lower lobe. At the narrows, the depth was 30 to 40 ft. Above the bed rock was sand, with boulders near the bottom, and mud. During the building of the railroad in 1903, considerable filling was done along the right of way. With the commencement of mining operations, about 1905, waste rock and mill tailings were dumped into the lake. One of the mining companies operated a hydraulic giant to remove the glacial debris from several hundred acres of rock surface; much of the sand and clay from this operation was deposited in the lake. About 1,500,000 tons of mill tailings, composed of sands and slimes, were discharged into the lake's waters previous to 1915. Most of this material

I NTRODUCTION The injection of energy in the form of heat into an oil-bearing formation as a means of increasing the recovery of oil has been the subject of much discussion and experimentation as far back as 1920. The ideas have ranged from the injection of steam to the direct use of electricity as a means of getting thermal energy into a formation. However, most laboratory and field studies have been confined to the process whereby a portion of the crude in the reservoir is burned to generate the necessary heat to increase the mobility of the oil by reducing its viscosity. A recent paper by W. L. Martin, et al.', described the results of a number of laboratory experiments in which the combustion process was studied in a sandpack. Studies such as this indicate that with the temperatures involved, the oil is partially coked in this process and it is this coke which provides the fuel for combustion. The combustion of this residual coke can be analyzed theoretically by applying simple stoich-iometric principles to the combustion process. It is the purpose of this paper to compare the results reported in these experiments with those obtained from theoretical considerations. The variables studied by Martin, et al, among others, include combustion front velocity, air flux, oxygen utilization, fuel concentration, ratio of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide in combustion gases, and the hydrogen:carbon ratio of the residual fuel. All these variables come into consideration when the stoichiometry of the combustion process is studied. The experimental conditions and results are tabulated in Tables 3 and 4 of Ref. 1. For purposes of comparison with calculated results, it was necessary to change the units of a number of the variables. UNDERGROUND COMBUSTION STOICHIOMETRY The combustion or oxidation of the carbonaceous residue or "coke" on the sand can be described in terms of the equation: where n is atomic ratio of hydrogen to carbon, m is ratio of moles of CO2 to CO produced, and CH. is taken as the unit molecular weight, realizing that actually the coke has a large range of high molecular weights. Assuming that all the fuel laid down in the sand is burned, the ratio of moles of oxygen consumed to moles of coke can be written as follows. The adsorption behavior of chalcopyrite has been studied at different xanthate concentrations and flow rates in a column apparatus with potassium ethyl xanthate as the collector. Based upon the experiment results an equation of the type: 1/F = K3 + m3C + k2/t.Cm2.fm1 is proposed to account for the experimental data. Among copper minerals an early study on chalcocite by Gaudin and Schuman (Taggart, 1951) is well known for its research on the kinetics of the reaction by conventional method of mass balance between the products of reaction and xanthate consumed. The results were interpreted by the concept of ion exchange adsorption. Szeglowski (1977) conducted measurements on the adsorption of potassium ethyl xanthate on copper polarized to various potentials, the adsorption being measured by radio-tracer techniques. The adsorption in the range -1800 to 700 mv was found to be a reversible physical adsorption. The potential range in which the primary electrode process could lead to surface coverage with a minimum number of product layers was evaluated. SMITH*-Mr. Rockwood has presented a very interesting paper on problems of the mineral aggregate industry in meeting specification requirements, which apparently are ever decreasing in tolerance. May I call attention to a method of mineral separation that may be of value in separating the flat aggregate particles from the more angular ones and possibly the soft particles from the hard. The method is the old Pardee spiral coal separator, extensively used many years ago in the anthracite region for separating rock and bone from anthracite coal.1 The success of the process depends on the relative coefficient of friction of the aggregate particles to be separated rather than on their relative specific gravity. The flat and the soft particles normally will slide more slowly and stay on the inner spiral until they reach the delivery spout at the bottom whereas the round and the angular pieces will work to the outer edge and fall off into a spiral of larger diameter. The capacity of the separator is increased materially by having three inner spirals, with a separate feed for each, on which the particles travel more slowly, and one outer spiral from which the more rapidly traveling pieces slide to the bottom. IRVING WARNER*-I have long been convinced that much of the equipment and methods developed for mineral dressing might be advantageously employed in the mineral aggregates industry, and more particularly in the production of sand and gravel. The two industries are not well acquainted with each other or their problems. They have separate trade publications. The difficulty with the situation is that there are few large sand and gravel plants and few provided with technical services in their own organization or by retainer. This does not refer to engineering organizations but rather to improvement of plant technic in processing.

A technique for collecting and analyzing the small quantities of gases desorbed on heating metal powders has been developed. The gases collected from copper powders of various types of manufacture have been analyzed and found to contain H2O, CO2, and SO2. The quantities of gas evolved vary from 0.05 to 1.0 milliliter, under standard con-ditons of temperature and pressure, per gram of powder. The source of the gas has been traced to surface films on the powder. IN the powder-metal industry it is recognized that the presence of gases in the powders affects the processing and resulting properties of the sintered product. Several sources for these gases are possible; namely, chemical reactions with the sintering atmospheres, inclusion. of gases during compacting, dissolved gases in the metal powder, and sorbed gases on the metal-,powder surfaces.1, 2, 3 Since the quantities of the gases are relatively small, no direct attempt has been made to collect and analyze them nor to isolate their source. The work that has been done has been concerned with the dimensional stability of the product., its porosity, density, or mechanical and physical properties. Conclusions are drawn on the basis of studies of this type as to the probable effect of gases on these properties. 4, 5, 0 In the present investigation an attempt has been made to obtain quantitative data on the analysis and quantities of gases associated with copper powders manufactured in different ways. Apparatus was constructed to collect gases evolved from loosely packed powder samples on heating to various temperatures under a reduced pressure of helium. The powders were outgassed thoroughly in a vacuum prior to starting the collection operation in order to eliminate mechanically entrapped gases and to prevent the possible reaction of the powder with these gases. Experimental Procedures Materials—The major portion of the investigation was carried out on a single heat of water-atomized, oxygen-free, high-conductivity copper. A relatively coarse fraction of this powder, 20 to 100 mesh, was tested as a mixed powder and as various graded size fractions. This paper presents some of the results of a rock mechanics instrumentation program designed for, and implemented at. longwall panel 4N at the York Canyon Mine near Raton, New Mexico. The objective of this particular instrumentation program was to determine the response of the rock mass to longwall mining of a thick coal seam utilizing shield-type supports. Measurements were made in the rock along the ground surface, above the coal seam, in the coal seam, and immediately below the coal seam. Longwall test panel 4N had a total developed length of 762 m (2500 ft) and a face width of 168 m (550 ft), [Fig. 1]. The seam mining height in the panel area was approximately 3 m (10 ft). The average depth of overburden above the panel is 107 m (350 ft) although it ranges from 73-134 m (240-440 ft). Roof support at the face was provided by 116 Hemscheidt 320 HSL shields. These shield-type supports weigh 11.4 metric tons each.

Within the last 15 years David Brown Gear Industries has manufactured approximately 200 large mill gears over 6m diam., 58 of them over 9 m and up to 12 m diam. The experience has not been without problems, due to a lack of clear understanding of the loads and stresses imposed on large gear wheels. American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA) practices suggest that a service factor be used for mill gears. But what is meant by "service factor"? The layman might be forgiven for believing that the term is synonymous with "safety factor," but this is certainly not true. The service factor is an aggregate of the following in some proportion: -An application factor, i.e., an allowance for the fact that systems do not run smoothly with uniform torque. -An ignorance factor covering the imperfections in the basic gear calculation. -Possibly a safety factor. In the following sections some of the ways in which the limits of applicability can be overstepped are discussed.

A series of correlating charts have been prepared to enable the field engineer to predict the amount of stock tank fluid produced by stabilization of first stage separator fluid. The charts shown are particularly convenient for estimating the relative effect of temperature and pressure in economic studies. Further work is planned to investigate the factors affecting stage separation' yo supplement this preliminary work. The direct correlation of separation variables is dictated as a convenience to eliminate the trial and error calculation necessary when using the standard flash vaporization equations. These are obtained by a material balance using the equilibrium vaporization ratio K, and have appeared in the following, or similar. form many times in the literature. where La = mols of any component n in the separator liquid Ko — equilibrium vaporization ratio for any component at separator pressure and temperature Fa = mols of any component n in the feed Vn = mols of any component n in the vapor V = total mols of separator vapor These equations may of course be effectively and accurately solved by use of digital and analog computers. However, these are not usually readily available in field offices and the need often arises for fast results during routine operational problems. Consequently, many methods have been devised in an attempt to simplify the basic calculation.2-14 The methods proposed are generally satisfactory, but do not eliminate trial and error methods and the necessity of subsequent calculations to obtain the answer in volume terms. The purpose of this work. therefore, was to develop accurate charts that would give the result directly in gallons. When using stage separation the recoveries would be lower than those shown, for stabilization usually gives about 95 + per cent recovery on the potential stock tank components in the separator liquid. The recoveries are shown in terms of a 14 psi Reid Vapor Pressure product which has a true vapor pressure of 14.7 psia at 98°F. Consequently, this product represents a stable stock tank liquid under normal storage conditions. To estimate natural gasoline re- coveries by stabilization the volume shown may be multiplied by 1.20 for 18 Ib RVP natural gasoline and 1.36 for 26 lb RVP natural gasoline. PROCEDURE The five analyses shown in Table 1 were chosen since they were representative of wellstream compositions often found and had almost the same propanes plus liquid content, expressed in gallons per 1,000 std. cu ft of wellstream. The distribution of the components though is widely variant. A temperature range of 0-100°F. and a pressure range of 200 to 1,250 psia was chosen inasmuch as most separations fall within these limits The K values used were modified values of those originally published by Katz and Hachmuth.' In the range chosen these have generally given good results when predicting fluid recoveries. The choice was somewhat arbitrary, for the authors' personal experience has shown that

Beads of metal frequently appear at the ends of cast-copper wire bars and on the sides of wedge cakes near the top. These are richer in cuprous-oxide than the rest of the casting. A micrographical study of these exudations has been made. It is suggested that the material is forced through the surface while the copper is solidifying. If not eliminated in process of manufacture, it shows on the finished polished sheet copper in patches differing in color from the main body of the sheet. FIGURES 1 to 4 show the copper exudations, at different magnifications, as they appear on the ends of cast wire bars, and on the sides, usually near the top, of wedge cakes. Sometimes the exudations are in fine "drops;" at other times, large masses of the material are found. Microscopic examination of the copper exudation indicates that it is high in oxide and of eutectic proportions. Because of the difficulty of securing a suitable sample, the protuberances have not been analyzed chemically; but the spectroscope shows no indication that there are any more metallic impurities present than in the balance of the copper. The lowest copper plus silver content of the coppers studied for this? paper was 99.914 per cent.; the highest, 99.966 per cent.; so the oxygen content of the whole casting would be well under 0.07 per cent.

Certain observations from the field and laboratory suggest the need for recasting some of our ideas about gypsum as a rock-forming mineral and in relation to supplies for industrial use. Until about 25 years ago, the use of gypsum was confined almost entirely to agriculture. During the past quarter century, though, its usefulness has been greatly developed, particularly in the building trades, which now absorb most of the gypsum produced. In 1919, according to the U. S. Geological Survey, the output of crude gypsum was 2,240,163 tons, a gain of 912 per cent. in 25 years. About one-half of this production was mined in New York, Ohio, and Michigan, where the proved supplies can hardly be regarded as over-large when viewed in relation to the rapid expansion of industrial requirements. The occurrence of gypsum in the United States is treated by R. W. Stone and others.' The deposits of Canada are described by L. H. Cole. Several states, including Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Michigan,and New York, have made special surveys of their gypsum deposits, but the reports, as a rule, refer to conditions as they existed from 15 to 20 years ago. Association of Gypsum and Anhydrite The two calcium sulfate compounds, gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) and anhydrite (CaS04), are the more stable forms of a series which includes at least two other members, so-called half-hydrate (CaSO4.1/2H20) and soluble anhydrite (CaS04). Each of the latter readily takes up water to recrystallize as gypsum and consequently is incapable of existence under ordinary geological conditions; also each can be prepared from gypsum by the application of heat within certain temperatures, the process on which is based the manufacture of commercial plasters. If the temperature limitations are not observed, the result of the calcination process will be insoluble anhydrite which, compared with the soluble form, takes up water very slowly so as to be of no practical use, although actually it is soluble and in time is convertible into gypsum like the other forms.

The detailed mechanism of rockbursts and other forms of damage due to rock failure in underground mining is as yet unknown. Studies of the energy changes which necessarily occur when an excavation is made underground seem to provide the best understanding of the phenomena leading to rock failure and damage (see Cook 1). It is common knowledge that the damage and rockburst hazard increases with depth and is greatest at remnants and in regions mined in an irregular manner. The rate at which energy is released as an excavation is enlarged provides an objective parameter to describe mining geometry in terms which are significant to studies of rock failure. In this paper, it is shown empirically that the rate of energy release per unit area increase in the size of an excavation is closely related to seismicity and incidence of damage in the mine. Consequently, it is suggested that the energy release rate is an important parameter in the design of underground mine layouts. Observations were made at two mines: the East Rand Proprietary Mines, Ltd. (E.R.P.M.), at a depth of about 9000 ft, and at Harmony Gold Mining Co., Ltd., at a depth of about 5000 ft. At both of these mines continuous recording seismic networks were in operation. (See Cook and Joughin.3) DESCRIPTION At E.R.P.M. the gold-bearing reef dips at approximately 35 degrees and is presently being mined at depths from 8000 ft to 11,000 ft below surface. The rock surrounding the excavation consists of a very homogeneous quartzite extending far into the hangingwall and footwall. The stoping width is approximately 40 in.

C.-From a metallurgical standpoint, there are several ways in which a reduction of the tin consumed in commercial non-ferrous and white-metal alloys can be effected. First, a reduction of the tin, content of the alloy; second, substitution of part or all of the tin content by some other metal; third, a substitution of a different type of alloy, which in some cases also involves a change in mechanical design. The Bureau of Standards has been studying these methods of conservation for tin alloys, particularly in regard to babbitts and bearing metals, bronzes, and solders. Much of the information secured by the Bureau was obtained from answers to questionnaires sent to manufacturers and users of these materials, so that, in general, any of the following suggestions or recommendations can be considered as being practical and as having already been thoroughly tried.
