THE copper-zinc phase equilibrium diagram has been the sub-ject of many investigations. Until recently, however, the boundary of the terminal solid solution of copper in zinc (eta) has not been thoroughly investigated. This paper reports determinations of the solid solubility of copper in zinc at temperatures from 100° to 400° C., the course of the liquidus and solidus for the eta solid solution and determinations of the peritectic temperature and peritectic point for the reaction between epsilon and the melt to form eta. The liquidus of the eta phase was determined by thermal analysis and the solidus by the microscopical examination of specimens quenched from temperatures above and below the solidus. The temperature of the peritectic horizontal was obtained by thermal analysis and the com-position at the peritectic point was determined by extrapolation of the solid solubility boundary of the eta phase to the peritectic horizontal. The solid solubility boundary of the eta solid solution was investigated very carefully. Particular care was used to achieve equilibrium in the alloys at each temperature selected. The X-ray, electrical con-ductivity and microscopical methods were used in determining the solid solubility limits. The X-ray method measures the changes in the solvent lattice with increasing solute content and in this manner locates the composition of the alloy at which no further change in the solvent lattice takes place, the limit of solid solubility. The method of electrical conductivity measures the conductivity of the alloys of a graded series of compositions, whereby the solubility limit is indicated by a discontinuity in the conductivity-

THE high-frequency laboratory induction furnace with a rotating liquid crucible enables research workers to conduct certain investigations heretofore very difficult or impossible to realize because vessels are not obtainable that are capable of resisting the physical conditions or the chemical actions to which they are subjected. Applications for patents covering commercial uses of centrifugal liquid crucibles were filed in the United States in 1919,1 in France in 1925, in the United States and Germany in 1926,2 and in France in 1927.3 In 1928, Schuette and Maier,4 of the Bureau of Mines, reported the construction of a whirling table beneath a high-frequency induction furnace. SHAPE AND SIZE OF CENTRIFUGAL LIQUID CRUCIBLES When a vessel containing a liquid is rotated, the inner surface of the liquid takes the shape f a paraboloid under the simultaneous action of centrifugal force and gravity. The internal dimensions of the paraboloid rotating liquid crucible are governed by the diameter of the container and its speed of rotation. Melted Wood's metal was poured into cylinders 2 ½ in. in diameter, which were rotated at 180, 300, and 468 r.p.m. When the metal was solid, a slurry of plaster of Paris was added, and rotation continued until the plaster had set. The experiences of Canex Placer Ltd. in establishing vegetation on a lead-zinc tailing pond are presented, hoping others with similar challenges will be benefited. History The tailing ponds are the result of 23 years of mining and milling operations, which ceased in August 1970. Roughly 7.9 million tons of lead-zinc ore were removed in that time. The ponds are located between Salmo River and B.C. Highway 3, about 8 miles north of Nelway near the Canada-U.S. border.

THERE have been a variety of theories proposed to explain the influence of dispersed second-phase particles on the yield strength and flow stress of metals, and these have been reviewed recently by Kelly and icholson.&apos; However, only several attempts2"4 have been made to develop mechanistic treatments which characterize the creep behavior of dispersion-strengthened metals, and to date these have not been fully evaluated experimentally. weertman2 and Ansell and weertman3 proposed a quantitative creep theory for coarse-grairzed dispersion-strengthened metals, based on the concept that the rate-controlling process for steady-state creep was the climb of dislocations over second-phase particles, as suggested by choeck. The theory predicted that the steady-state creep rate, <,, was proportional to the applied stress, a, for low stresses and that is a4 o for high stresses. The activation energy for creep, Q,, was equivalent to that for self-diffusion, Qs.d., in the matrix. Some limited experimental evidence in support of this theory was obtained on a recrystallized Al-Alz03 S.A.P.-type alloy by Ansell and Lenel.6 Ansell and weertman3 also developed a semiquanti-tative theory for high-temperature creep of lineg-rained dispersion-strengthened metals in order to explain their results on an extruded S:A.P.-type alloy, which had a fine-grained fibrous structure. They suggested that the rate of dislocation generation from grain boundaries was the rate-controlling process, and fitted their results to the equation: where Q, was found to be 150 kcal per mole, i.e., QC- 4Q,.d. in aluminum. Similar high activation energies for creep7-&apos;&apos; and tensile deformation" of dispersion-strengthened alloys have been observed by other investigators for S.A.P.,&apos;" indium-glass bead omosites, and Ni + A1203 alls.&apos; There is no general agreement regarding the mechanisms involved in the creep of dispersion-strengthened metals, and this is due in part to the lack of detailed studies relating the structures of crept specimens to the mechanical behavior. The present investigation on thoriated nickel was undertaken with the aim of studying the structural changes which occur during creep of a dispersion-strengthened alloy and rationalizing the observed mechanical behavior in terms of the creep structures. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The material used in this investigation was 1/2-in.-diam TD Nickel bar, which contained 2.3 vol pct Tho,. Obtained from E. I. duPont de Nemours & Co., Inc. The final fabrication treatment by DuPont consisted of -95 pct reduction by swaging followed by a 1-hr anneal at 1000°C. Transmission and replica electron microscopy revealed that the material had a fine-grained fibered structure with an average transverse grain size of -1 p and a longitudinal grain size of 10 to 15 p. Selected-area diffraction indicated that the fiber axis was parallel to (OOl), in agreement with the results of Inman eta1." All creep specimens were vacuum-annealed at 1300°C for 3 hr prior to testing. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the only structural change due to annealing was a slight decrease in dislocation density, confirming the reported high degree of structural stability.13 Furthermore, recrys-tallization or grain growth during creep was never observed. The structure typical of uncrept material (after the 1300 C, 3-hr anneal) is shown in Fig. 1. The grain boundaries are predominantly high angle and. although some areas show a tangled cell structure, the grain interiors are relatively dislocation-free. Individual dislocations are strongly pinned by the Tho2 particles; i.e., very rarely did dislocations move within a thin foil. The grey "halos" around some of the larger particles which protrude out of the foil surface arise from contamination in the electron microscoge. The Tho, particle size ranged from -100 to IOOOA, and the distribution is shown in Fig. 2. The technique used to obtain the data in Fig. 2 consisted of dissolving the nickel matrix in acid, collecting the Tho2 particles on cellulose acetate, and measuring about 1000 particle diameters in the electron microscope. Similar results were obtained by measuring about 600 particles in thin foils, an; the average particle size was found to be 2r, = 370A. Frontino operates three underground lode mines at Segovia in the area of northwest Antioquia, Colombia, which has been an important gold producing district since the late 1800s. Auriferous pyrite, the pre-dominent sulfide, carries very finely disseminated gold. Other minor sulfides are galena, pyrrhotite, and sphalerite in quartz gangue with the host rock being granodiorite. Silver is associated with the galena and also occurs as a sulfo-salt. In 1.973 and 1974, at an annual milling rate of 145,000 mt (160,000 st), average mill heads were 7.80 g per mt (0.23 oz per st) Au; 20.0 g per mt (0.58 oz per st) Ag; and 0.37% Pb; with a production of 1,150 kg (35,700 oz) Au and 4,500 kg (141,000 oz) Ag. Over 300 mt (330 st) of Pb concentrate were shipped. The ore is crushed to minus 16 mm (5 18 in. ) and fed to a rod mill with the discharge passing over a 1.07 m by 1.07 m (42 in. by 42 in. ) jig operating in closed circuit with the underflow from a cyclone in closed circuit with two ball mills. Cyclone overflow is bulk-floated for sulfide recovery from which the tailings are sent to the river as waste with the flotation concentrate joining the jig concentrate for cyanidation. The combined gold bearing concentrates, after cyclone classification, are reground to a very fine mesh in closed circuit with cyclone classification, with the overflow going to the primary thickener. Regrinding, classification, and thickening is done in cyanide solution, and the primary thickener produces a pregnant solution for Merrill -Crowe precipitation. The thickener underflow is the feed to the agitators, thickener, and filter from which the overflow and filtrate are sent to precipitation. The washed filter cake is repulped and floated for the recovery of a galena concentrate for shipment. About 40% of the recovered silver is in this concentrate. In the refinery the precipitate is melted into a dore bullion. This 600 mt (660 st) capacity mill employs several interesting techniques. Gold recovery of 85% to 90% from a complex sulfide denotes good practice. While total power at 42 kwh per mt (46 kwh per st) is high, it would be recognized that the grinding units are small in size and the flowsheet is complicated due to the gold occurring in the sulfide minerals. When the writer first began his search for the early history of coal he was amazed at the paucity of information in literature about it, and while after six years many of the reasons for such a scarcity are understood, there are still many cases, even within the last two centuries, when one who can appreciate the tremendous part coal has played in the development of modern times, finds it hard to realize how little attention was paid to this material in those early clays. Occasionally a traveller or observer is found who foresaw how valuable coal was to be when industries were developed, but these were few and to most of those recording its occurrence it was just another mineral. George Washington was farsighted in his view of the development of this country and the need for means of transportation across the mountain barrier, but it was at least sixteen years after he must first have known of coal before he made any reference to it in his journals. He did, however, knowingly or not, select some valuable coal properties in the lands lie obtained in the West. This was then almost entirely an agricultural country, and what industries there were found a great abundance of wood fuel within easy access, there were no steam plants, and all iron was made with charcoal; in fact, the "captive mines" of the iron industry then were large timber "plantations," and when these were exhausted the furnace usually was abandoned and another one built elsewhere, as transportation of charcoal was quite expensive. Along the seaboard the cities and industries began to import coal from England and Nova Scotia early in the eighteenth century, but until the war of the Revolution began the total quantity of coal used yearly in this continent did not exceed nine thousand tons. In 1800 only two places, Pittsburgh and Richmond, Virginia, were using coal to any extent for domestic purposes and it was much later. than this that the amount of coal used in Philadelphia, New fork, and Boston exceeded that of wood. Practically all of the early travellers and writers mentioning coal are noted in the following pages. Several Englishmen who were evidently familiar with its use and value at home, mention its presence as being of great future promise to the young nation, but to nearly all it was more or less of a curiosity and the smoke caused by its use an abomination, and it

IT has been shown elsewhere1 that the data on the rates of diffusion in solid metals are fragmentary and in many cases unacceptable. As a result, relatively little is known concerning the factors determining rates of diffusion and the variations in these rates with temperature. The first form of Fick&apos;s law (equation 1 below), ‡ in which the diffusion coefficient D is assumed invariant with composition, has been recognized for many years as only an approximation. The differential equation representing the second form of Fick&apos;s law (equation 4 below) has only recently been integrated by Matano,2 and unfortunately only in cases where a full diffusion-penetration curve (concentration-distance curve) has been obtained can the Matano solution be applied. The proper analysis of diffusion data is thus confined to the data of Grube and Zedele and of Zedele.§ These data are essentially for one temperature alone and do not furnish any information on the variation of the activation heat of diffusion, Q, with concentration: no information exists on the variation of Q with concentration within a singles olid solution field. 11 Much of the argument concerning the properties of metals that determine D and Q has been drawn from data in which variations of the quantities with concentration are unknown, for these data have been taken from experiments that could not furnish this information. Speculation concerning the properties of metals that may be effective in determining D and Q on the basis of data in which the chosen D and Q values are averages over wide concentration ranges of values at particular concentrations, ranges often of 100 per cent, is likely not to be fruitful.

The Yates pool, Pccos County, Texas, has greater potential capacities than any other field in the United States. This field is notable for the large return it yields on capital invested, for low production costs and for the orderly and conservative manner in which it was developed and continues to be operated. The proven area is 20,000 acres and there are 392 producing wells, or approximately 1 well to 50 acres. The theoretical daily potential is 5,250,000 bbl. as determined by l-hr. open-flow gages. Individual well gages vary from a few barrels to 8500 bbl. per hour, and well depths range from 1000 to 1800 ft. The greater part of the production is from a very porous limestone, and by agreement no productive well has penetrated the lime more than 225 ft. The forces driving the oil from the formation to the surface are hydrostatic head, expanding gas or a combination of the two. The degree of effectiveness of either depends upon the structural position of, and porosity encountered in, the individual wells. Approximately 95 per cent. of the wells in the field flow naturally. The pipe line outlet of the field at the present time is 100,000 bbl. per day, which is less than 2 per cent. of the daily potential. Difficulties and Principles of Probation It became evident during the first year of the development of this field that operators would have to devise a scheme to allocate pipe line runs equitably among their different properties. When the idea of proration was first inaugerated, the matter of spacing wells was given consideration. This was given up through fear of legal difficulties. Storage was also a question that was given considerable thought, and a plan was finally developed which went into effect Oct. 1, 1927. It was decided that the oil runs should be prorated according to the total potential capacity of all the wells which the several operators had in the field. The potential capacity of the wells was measured by a l-hr. open-flow gage. All runs to storage by an operator were deducted from his daily allowance.

10.1-1. Relative Position of Maintenance as Compared to the Overall Mining Costs. The basic issue regarding the importance of maintenance in the modern mining industry must be faced squarely by the top manage- ment of each company before any real progress can be made in organizing a maintenance program for optimum effectiveness. Just a few decades ago the maintenance at coal mines consisted primarily of a blacksmith for sharpening picks and shoeing mules; as a result, probably less than 5%of the total mining cost went to maintenance and some 80% was operating expenses (operating labor). With each succeeding advance in equipment design towards larger, more complex, and more productive units, the pendu- lum swings the other way. As an example, haulage trucks have progressed through various stages in the past 20 years from 15-ton units to a 240-ton truck now in the "shakedown" or experimental stage. The following com- parison between 15-ton, 50-ton, and 100-ton haulage trucks clearly illus- trates this changing cost pattern in terms of percent of overall costs for running each size unit. INTRODUCTION Tochibora Mine belonged to Kamioka Mines, which are located in Gifu Prefecture, the cen- tral part of the Japanese main island, has occupied the important position as a main source of silver, lead and zinc for the smelter of Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd.. The annual production of crude ore goes up to about 1 mil- lion metric tons with average grades of 20g/t Ag. 0.31% Pb, and 4.18% Zn. For the last 20 years, the mine has struggled with the depressed zinc metal price in yen and the escalation of operating cost, especially la- bour cost. For instance, prices of commodities and labour cost have been raised 8 times and 14 times respectively during this period. On the other hand, total operating cost has been con- trolled to increase 4.5 times. The productivity of the mine has been increased 4 times by means of improvement of individual works and adoption of perfectly mechanized trackless mining system to reform the mining method. Some improvements are presented as follows; Today, drifting is carried out by the tunnelling crew which consists of 9 operators equipped with 5 Mobile-Jumbos, 2 LHD&apos;s and a jeep for carrying and loading ex- plosives. In order to get the high utilization of these machines, each crew manages systematically and continuously adjacent 15 faces under the direction of a forceman. As a result, we have accomplished high advance of drift. Furthermore, raising is carried out by a set of the raise-borer in case of long raises like ore- passes and also by the stage blasting method in case of short ones like slot-cuts. Generally speaking, the sublevel stoping method is considered to be one of the best methods for various respects; high productivity, low cost, easy grade control and safety. This method has been introduced in Tochibora Mine since 1950 and is now widely applied to lodes that could not be mined before by this method be- cause of the shapes of them and the conditions of their country rock. Now we are convinced to be nearly accomplished for our method. This report presents some examples of the standard sublevel stoping method and its variations which are practised at the mine. STANDARD SUBLEVEL STOPING Up to 1979 since 1950 when this method was first applied at the mine, 17 million tons of crude ore have been produced by this method, which amounted to 55% of the total production of the mine. During three decades, the productivity has been increased considerably by means of trackless mining system using large-sized machines and etc.. In other words, mining efficiency has been increased from 20 tons/man.shift to 100 tons/man.shift at large stopes. Formerly undercutting was carried out above the drawing drift by jack-legs and small scrapers and then several cone-shaped glory holes were made by stopers between the undercut level and the draw level. But now, a undercut drift is driven in parallel with the haulage drift at the same level of it. And at the undercut drift, drilling upward is carried out by a large-sized machines like the fan drill in order to extract the broken ore directly at the drawing drift connected with the haulage drift. Simplification of the work as well as utilization of large- sized machines enables to get higher productivity. But if the deposit is comparatively wider and the broken ore around the middle part of the deposit cannot be extracted, several drawing drifts are driven to the deposit and in order to minimize dead ore at the final stage of operation, the

A study was made of the change in density during the first (transient) and second (linear) stages of the creep curve of polycrystalline copper as a function of 1) stress, 2) temperature, 3) plastic strain, 4) impurity and atmosphere effects, and 5) structure, including single crystals. Voids were not observed in single crystals strained 15 pct at 500°C, or in a polycrystal-line aggregate produced by recrystallizing a single crystal, within the limit of sensitivity, Ae/e = 1 x 10-4. It appears that voids are heterogeneously nucleated at grain boundaries by an insoluble phase, or phases, which can be removed by directional solidification. The principal controlling mechanism of void growth appears to be condensation of vacancies at grain boundaries. Vacancies are transported to a boundary and condense as a consequence of the tensile stress component across the boundary, which depends on the orientation and configuration of the boundary plane and on boundary shear across ledges and other irregularities. The ultimate source of vacancies is the free surface and diffusional transport is by way of the boundary plane. PREVIOUS investigations have dealt with the nucle-ation of voids at grain boundaries under creep condition~&apos;-~ and with the connection between grain boundary voids and subsequent brittle fracture.5-7 Growth of voids during the creep process, particularly in the transient and linear stages of creep, has not been studied with the same intensity. Therefore, it seems pertinent to investigate the process of void growth with respect to the related creep curve, and the morphology of growing voids with respect to the structure.

IT would doubtless have been felt by many but a few years back that there was little left to be said on the subject of crucible tool-steel, and that something akin to finality had been arrived at in its manufacture and general treatment. Probably such feeling was justifiable when it is remembered that the making of steel in crucibles is by far the oldest method known, dating back from time immemorial, it being indeed impossible to accurately trace its origin and earliest development; but it seems certain that carbon-steel was made and used thousands of years ago for cutting-tools. Proof of this may be seen by the marvelous carvings and workings on the intensely hard stone-work of the ancients, for it would be difficult to conceive by what means, other than with steel tools, such work could have been executed; and it is wonderful to contemplate that steel cutting-tools should have been used so long ago, whilst the principle of manufacturing them-that is, by fusion of iron and charcoal in crucibles-was then in a measure on the sane lines as we work on at the present day. Archaeologists have discovered that the Chinese made steel in crucibles long before the Christian era. " Wootz " steel fabricated in India centuries ago was crucible steel, as was also the celebrated Damascus steel, produced at the forges of Toledo, and, curiously, this latter steel furnishes&apos; yet another proof that "There is nothing new under the Sun," for it is recorded that Damascus steel contained certain percentages of tungsten, nickel, manganese, etc., some of the very elements, in fact, contained in the present modern high-speed steel, so that a latent high-speed steel may be said to have existed

Speculation concerning the properties of metals that may be effective in determining D and Q on the basis of data in which the chosen D and Q values are averages over wide concentration ranges of values at particular concentrations, ranges often of 100 per cent, is likely not to be fruitful.

THIS paper gives the results : first, of a research into the somewhat extensive literature of titanium; and second, of a series of original tests upon the effect of titanium on iron castings. New investigations have also been made upon the effect of titanium on steel, but I hope to treat this subject in an independent paper at some later date, and, therefore, will not discuss the experiments in detail here. The combined results of this study, which extended over a period of more than two years, can be briefly summarized as follows: 1. Steel or cast-iron, in which the titanium is properly proportioned, and which has been properly treated, is improved in strength, toughness, and durability against wear, such as, for example, the wear of railroad-rails, of steel and chilled-iron .rolls, car-wheels, etc. 2. These improvements seem to be caused, not so much by the direct effect of titanium on the metal, as by its cleansing influence in removing harmful impurities, such as oxygen and oxides, nitrogen, occluded slags, and perhaps also sulphur. It appears also to reduce segregation, which would contribute to the same end. 3. In order that its effects may be fully realized, the treatment of steel or iron with titanium must be correctly performed. WHEN measuring ordinary temperatures, the instrument is generally placed in very close contact with the body the temperature of which is desired. However, if the temperature of the source is continually raised, a point is soon reached where no known substance will, in general, remain constant in any of its temperature-measuring properties if placed in direct contact with the source. Also, it is occasionally necessary to measure the temperature of a source that &apos;is so small or so situated that it would be very hard to bring the measuring instrument into direct contact with the source. When these conditions exist, advantage is taken of the well-known fact that all bodies, when at sufficiently high temperatures, send out radiation in amounts readily measurable. This radiation has been found to be related to the temperature. The temperatures of very hot bodies have probably always been judged by the color, or the brightness, of the light given off. With practice, one can estimate probably within 50° to 100° C. of the correct value. However, if judgment is left to the eye alone, very much larger errors are sometimes made, due to

The effects of alloy composition, deformation temperature, heal treatment, ad inlerstilial contamination on the occurrence of deformation twins were studied. The twinning transition temperature varied with composition and was a maximuni of 140°C for the 40 pcl V composition. Tire remperature range of the transition was very narrow. Alloys of 20 to 70 pet V could he cold-rolled and exhibited profuse twinning. The alloys which did not twin at room temperature (10, 80, and 90 pel V) could plot be cold-rolled. Oxygen additions systematically lowered the transition temperatures for all vanadium contents. The transition temperature for a 30 pet V alloy increased with annealing temperature, apparently due to changes in dislocation density and configuration. Twinning did not nucleate fracture in any specimen in the 20 to 60 pet V composition range. THERE is great current interest in the refractory metals and alloys as structural materials. An important factor in considering the ductile-brittle behavior of such materials is the role of mechanical twinning as a deformation mechanism. Mechanical twins have been observed after deformation at low temperatures or at high loading rates in the pure metals iron,1 vanadium,2,3 columbium,4,5 tantalum,6 Chromium,7 molybdenum,8 and tungsten.9 Binary alloys in which mechanical twins have been observed include: iron with silicon,10 phosphorous," or aluminum;12 and chromium, molybdenum, or tungsten with rhenium.13-17 The increase in low-temperature ductility obtained by alloying the Group VI-A elements with rhenium is very important with regard to fabricability, and there has been considerable effort to understand the so-called &apos;(rhenium effect". Factors suggested to explain this effect include:&apos;&apos; 1) increase in solubility of interstitial impurities with alloying (electronic effect): 2) changes in the nature of grain boundary phases; 3) changes in interfacial energies of grain boundaries and stacking faults: and 4) promotion of twinning. Although an outstanding characteristic of these alloys is the profuse twinning that accompanies low-temperature deformation, most studies of the rhenium effect have been concerned with the other factors. During recent studies of refractory-metal alloys, it was noted that solid solutions of columbium and vanadium exhibited high hardness and strength at room temperature and elevated temperature and, surprisingly, also showed considerable ductility at room temperature and below. These alloys deformed by twinning at room temperature when subjected to slow loading rates. It appeared that the low-temperature ductility resulted at least in part from the relaxation of stresses by twinning in a system where slip is difficult.
