The physical properties of the materials are listed, together with a short explanation of how this material binds the sand grains together without materially reducing the effective permeability of the sand. Introduction Recovering oil and gas from unconsoli-dated sand formations offers one of the most troublesome of all production problems. These sands generally present no particular trouble while drilling is in progress, but after the well has been completed and a pressure differential has been established across the face of the producing zone, the formation begins to L'slough," resulting in "sanding up" of the well. The term "sanding up" means that sufficient volumes of sand have moved into the well bore or casing to cause a serious reduction or complete halt of all flow of oil, water or gas. In rare cases a well may produce only a small amount of sand and still continue to flow or pump, the sand being carried to the surface in the fluid stream. However, in such instances, the result may be a costly repair bill due to the effect of the sand on surface and pumping equipment. The difficulty of producing petroleum from sands that are loosely cemented has long been recognized by petroleum engineers but only within the last few years has any new approach to the problem been undertaken. This involves the use of plastics that are capable of bonding the individual sand grains in place without materially reducing the effective permeability of a formation. The successful application of plastics for the consolidation of poorly cemented sands is relatively recent but now it is widely used in many of the more difficult areas on the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana. This relatively new use of plastics1 in the oil fields has been preceded by much laboratory and field research on the use of various chemicals2,3 for solving numerous well-completion and work-over problems. Plastics now are being used successfully to control gas-oil and water-oil ratios,4'6 in zone isolation, the repair of casing leaks, the elimination of caving in cable-tool drilling wells6'7 and in the setting of linerss and casing.9 Sand-consolidating plastics, however, are basically different from all others in that they must not form an impervious seal. A study has been made of the effect of small additions of bismuth on the activity of zinc in dilute solution in molten tin. Free-energy interactions have previously been determined between zinc and various third elements where the solvents were molten bismuth or molten lead.'-4 In both of these solvents, the activity of zinc exhibits a strong positive deviation from ideal behavior (at 550°C y° for zinc in lead is 11.4 and for zinc in bismuth is 3.0). The present work, using tin as the solvent, is an extension to a case where the positive deviation is considerably diminished (y°Zn at 550°C is 1.63). Several previous investigators have studied the Zn-Sn binary system; however, little data is available in the range below 0.1 mole fraction zinc.5= Previous high-temperature galvanic cell studies in the Sn-Zn-Bi ternary system included the determination by Gluck and Pehlke of interactions in the bismuth-rich corner1 and separate investigations of the central region by Oleari and Fioriani6 and by Ptak and Moser.7 Yokokowa et al.8 conducted Knudsen effusion studies in the central region; however, their experiments at 625°K were conducted somewhat below the present experimental temperature range. Their results indicated an increase in zinc activity with the addition of bismuth. The present series of experiments was conducted in galvanic cells represented as follows: Zn Zn++ in LiCI-KC1 eutectic Zn + Bi in Sn (pure reference (fused salt electrolyte) (molten alloy) standard) The experimental apparatus. a multi-electrode system employing alumina crucibles and contained in a Vycor tube under a helium atmosphere, has been described previously, as have been the experimental procedures, precautions, and the methods of data reduction.1-4,- The experimental measurements were made over the range from 450° to 650°C. Between thirty and forty measurements were made in each run. The linearity of the electromotive force vs temperature relations was verified by linear regression techniques. The correlation coefficients exceeded 0.99. The experimental results summarized in Table I include the interpolated electromotive force at 550°C and the temperature dependence of electromotive force. Only results from stable and consistent cells containing more than 0.025 mole fraction zinc are reported. Attempts to run cells at 0.01 or 0.02 mole fraction zinc were not satisfactory. This is attributed to the closeness of the free energies of formation of the chlorides of tin and zinc. Calculations employing Wagner and Werner's criteria for displacement reactions10 indicated that reduction of the zinc content to 0.01 mole fraction places the cell near the borderline concentration for a 1 pct error in measured potential. The compositions shown in Table I are the actual weighed-in amounts. Previous experience has indicated that compositional changes during the running of a stable cell are negligible.' Over the range of compositions studied for the binary alloys, the activity coefficient of zinc was essentially constant indicating that Henry's law is followed to 0.05 mole fraction zinc. The interaction between British gum 9084 and dode-cylammonium chloride (DAC) at quartz and hematite surfaces was established from coadsorption studies and streaming potential measurements. The cationic DAC interacts with the somewhat anionic British gum 9084, leading to the formation and adsorption of a binary complex of DAC-British Gum 9084 at the interface. The parallel ability to depress quartz along with hematite as a result of the interaction between DAC and British gum appears to be the main reason for the ineffective depressant action of starches and starch derivatives in the cationic flotation of iron ores. Amines are not particularly selective collectors for the flotation' of siliceous gangue from iron ores and, therefore, a suitable iron oxide depressant is needed for a satisfactory separation. Various starches and their derivatives have been extensively tested with oxidized iron ores,'-3 and it has been empirically established that British gums and dextrins are preferable. However, for the flotation upgrading of magnetite-taconite concentrates from 8 or 8.5% Si O2 to about 5% Si 02, British gums, which have been used so successfully on oxidized iron ores, have been found to have no effect and oftentimes are actually deleterious.4 In previous articles,5-7, starches were shown by adsorption measurements, flotation tests, and floccula-tion tests to interact with calcium ions in solution, and it was thought that a study on the interaction between starches and dodecylammonium ions would be able to shed some light on the anomalous flotation behavior described above. In fact, starches are known to interact markedly with paraffin-chain-type surface active agents and, thereby, to precipitate the starch or inhibit the iodine-starch reaction.8 From X-ray diffraction studies and viscosity measurements, the formation of a helical complex between mylose and a surface active agent has been postulated.9 The interaction with other types of hydrophilic colloids, such as synthetic polymers and proteins, has also been investigated and is usually explained in terms of van der Waals' force interaction and/or ion-ion interaction. In the present investigation, the interaction of British gum and dode cylammonium chloride on quartz and hematite was studied by adsorption and streaming potential measurements in an attempt to establish the mutual adsorption behavior of British gum and dode-cylammonium chloride on mineral surfaces and to clarify the anomalous depressant activity of British gum in the cationic flotation of iron ores. All the measurements were carried out at a natural pH of near 7 because dodecylammonium chloride gives maximum selectivity of flotation separation at this pH2 and to avoid any third parameter in the system. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHODS Minerals: The quartz and hematite samples used for the adsorption tests were prepared as described in a previous paper,"J except that the specific surfaces of the samples were increased to 5,860 and 16,000 Sq cm per gm, respectively. For the streaming potential measurements, the 48165-mesh fractions screened out of the original samples were etched with hydrochloric acid, washed repeatedly with water, and stored under water in Pyrex bottles. Reagents:DodecyIammonium chloride (DAC) was prepared1 1 by bubbling dry hydrogen chloride gas through a benzene solution of high-purity dodecylamine supplied by Armour and Co. British gum 9084, received from Corn Products Co., was solubilized by first dispersing it in water to produce a 0.05% solution and then homogenizing it in a blender for 5 min. Distilled water was used in the preparation of the samples and the solutions and for all test work. Adsorption Measurements: The procedure for the adsorption density determinations was also the same as that described in the previous paper.1° The residual concentrations of the British gum and the DAC in the supernatant solution were analyzed colorimetrically by the phenol-sulf uric-acid and amine-picrate methods, respectively. The validity of the mine-picrate method for the colorimetric analysis of DAC in the presence of British gum and the analysis of British gum in presence of DAC were checked by establishing calibration curves between optical density and concentration. Streaming Potential Measurements: The cell assembly for the streaming potential measurements was similar to that described by Fuerstenau.' The streaming potential

The unidirectional solidification of dendrites containing central twin planes was studied in A1-Ti alloys. Once nucleated, the twinned dendrites are a Twore ejficient form for solute redistribution and therefore grow in preference to the normal columnar dendvites. Comparison of these twinned dendrites to adjacent colunmar dendrites by means of decanting experinzents and electron-probe rnicvoarmlysis indicates that these special dendrites grow with less undercooling than normal dendrites. These findings are further supported by the effect of forced convection on the dendrite morphologies. COMMERCIAL semicontinuous cast ingots of most aluminum alloys frequently exhibit large grains which appear to be composed of hundreds of parallel, continuous, thin lamellae. This structure has been termed "basaltic",' "fiederkristall", or, commonly, "feathery grain". The lamellae are 'about 100 p thick, several inches long, and each lamella contains a central (111) coherent twin boundary. The feathery grain has been reported to have a (112) direction2 and a (110) direction4 in the twin plane parallel to the casting direction, in contrast with the usual columnar structure where a (100) direction predominates. Aust et uZ.~ proposed that the twin boundaries were growth twins nucleated by stacking faults on the octahedral planes. chalmers6 has suggested that feathery grain may grow by a re-entrant edge mechanism, as proposed by wagner7 for twinned dendritic growth in germanium. Cahn et ~1.~ have concluded that the occurrence of feathery grain is evidence of some form of lateral layer growth rather than the atomically continuous growth normally observed in metals. The postulates by Chalmers and Cahn would seem to be contradicted by the work of Nakao~"' who showed that feathery grain only occurs when growth rates are high and the aluminum contains some solute. Specifically, Nakao found that in order to obtain feathery grain, in small castings solidified unidirec-tionally upward, the rate of growth must be above 2.4 cm per min and a critical solute concentration must be present. Below this solute concentration the grain structure was totally columnar. The critical solute concentration was found to be approximately: 0.04 wt pct Ti, 2 wt pct Cu or Mg, and 8 wt pct Zn. As pointed out by Chalmers it is not obvious why a twin-plane re-entrant edge mechanism would occur in aluminum which is thought to have a diffuse solid-liquid interface. The present experiments were undertaken to determine the growth mechanisms in- volved and to study the solute segregation in more detail. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloys ranging in composition from 0.05 to 0.23 wt pct Ti* were prepared from 99.9 pct pure Ti and 99.993 pct pure Al. Two-hundred-gram samples of A1-Ti binary alloys were solidified unidirectionally and vertically upward from a water-cooled copper base, in a heated insulated mold. The 1-in.-diam, 6-in.-length mold was made of Marinite (manufactured by Johns-Manville Co.). The mold was attached to a 24-in. pivoted arm such that by dropping a weight the mold was rotated 180 deg, throwing the liquid metal from the solid. In this way, the solid-liquid interface was revealed by decanting. A sketch of the decanting mold is shown in Fig. 1. The alloy was poured into the mold at temperatures ranging from 680" to 750°C, partially solidified by water cooling from the base, and decanted after a measured time interval. Growth rates for each metal-pouring temperature were calculated from solidification-time vs length solidified curves. Temperature gradients in the melt were measured using four No. 34 gage thermocouples which protruded into the mold cavity. Grain orientations were determined by X-ray diffraction using Laue back-reflection techniques. Grain substructures were examined metallographically, using polarized light, by applying a thin epitaxial anodic film to polished sections after the method of Hone and pearson." Titanium micro segregation was measured by electron-probe microanalysis using a NORELCO AMR/~ with a mica crystal and proportional-flow counter. Plans for the fall meeting of the AIME, to be held in conjunction with the Centennial of Engineering -marking the 100th anniversary of the Society of Civil Engineers-indicate that the Chicago gathering will be one of the most significant in Institute history. Headquarters for the six divisions represented will be the Palmer House. Twenty technical sessions will be held from September 3 to 6, with papers of industry-wide impact to be presented. The papers will follow the theme of the celebration-a century of engineering progress. The MBD will start the ball rolling with morning and afternoon sessions Thursday, September 4. A luncheon also will be held. MBD has scheduled morning and afternoon sessions for the following day as well. MGGD, Iron and Steel, and the Coal Div., will hold sessions Friday afternoon. The Industrial Minerals Div. plans an executive meeting, 5 pm, Friday. Geology Subdivision is slated for morning and afternoon sessions Saturday. The Coal Div. will meet again Saturday morning.

The Ch-H phase diagram was determined for by-drogen concentrations up to ChHo.9 at temperatures below 400°P'. The phase diagram includes a mis-cibility gap and a eutectoid transformation. A peri-tectoid transformation is postulated at the hydrogen-rich end of the diagram, Phase diagrams were determined for two levels oj purity, of the columbium. A single solid solution exists in the Cb-H system above 400°F. There has been considcrable disagreement among investigators concerning the system at temperatures below 400°F. Albrecht, Goode, and ~allett' proposed a miscibility gap containing two bcc phases with the two lattice parameters converging at about 140°C (285-F), and Brauer and ~erman' found a two-phase room-temperature region between 10 and 41 at. pct H. At sufficiently high hydrogen concentrations in the one-phase region, the hydrogen-rich phase was found to be face-centered orthorhombic. Wainwright, Cook, and Hopkills3 recently reported that the face centered orthorhombic hydride phase is derived from a unit cell which is slightly tetragonal with a small departure from 90 deg of the angle (y) opposite the r axis. The orthorhombic hydride phase was observed for hydrogen concentrations between 0.2 and 0.8 H/Cb atom ratio. Paxton and coworkers4 found that needlelike hydride plates formed in a hydrogen-charged columbium single crystal and suggested that this transformation possessed the characteristics of a diffusionless phase transformation. On the basis of room-temperature, X-ray diffraction data, komjathy' suggested that an order-disorder or martensitic transformation occurs. In the present study, the Cb-H system was investigated to resolve the discrepancies found in the literature for this system. PROCEDURE The columbium specimens were prepared from two heats of wrought 1/2-in.-diameter electron-beam melted columbium rod and from two columbium powders of -80 mesh size of different impurity contents. The columbium bar stock was pur chased from Urah Chmg Corp.; the 99 and 99.5 pct purity colulnbium powders were obtained from Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. and Kern Chemical Co.. respectively. The chemical analyses of the columbium bar and powders are listed in Table I. Hydrogen charging was performed by exposing the columbium specimens to hydrogen at 1 atm pressure at various temperatures. After exposure the specimens were quenched to prevent the hydrogen pickup which would take place if cooled in hydrogen, or the hydrogen loss that would occur if cooled in an inert gas. Adequate hydrogen purity was achieved by passing high-purity tank hydrogen (maximum 5 ppm total impurities) through an Engelhard catalytic Deoxo unit, magnesium per chlorate desiccant, and finally through activated charcoal at the temperature of boiling nitrogen. Activated charcoal at -321°F has been reported6 to remove impurities from hydrogen to a nondetectable level. A schematic representation of the heat-treating apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Of this number, 137 were gas wells, which is a considerable increase from the 81 completed during 1938. Only 25 oil wells were completed, as against 28 in the previous year, and 28 dry holes, 6 more than last year. Shallow Development—Gas The increase in the number of gas wells is largely the result of a search for additional gas in Armstrong and Indiana Counties. Although a considerable number of wells were drilled in the latter county, the majority of them produced less than 100 M cu. ft. initial open flow. In Armstrong County, a new pool was opened in Cowanshannock township, producing from the third Bradford sand. Several large wells were obtained there, one of which produced an initial of nearly 12 million cu. ft., with a reservoir pressure of 1100 Ib. However, the productive area has been fairly well outlined by further drilling and shows that the pool covers only about 800 acres. The sand is 20 to 30 ft. thick, and probably has 5 to 6 ft. of pay. Thus this reserve is not an important one. Several wells were found in Menallen township, Fayette County, where the Big Injun sand has been having a play for the past three years, but the activity there is much less than a year ago. Oil On the west side of the Bradford sand gas pool, Cowanshannock township, Armstrong County, a well was drilled which flowed 100 bbl. the first day from the Tiona sand. The investigation of aluminum alloy systems prior to 1923 was severely handicapped by the low purity of the best aluminum available. However, by that time, the electrolytic purification of aluminum had been developed by the Aluminum Company of America,(1)† and in May, 1923, there was initiated, under the direction of E. H. Dix, Jr.,(2) a program for the investigation of the aluminum-alloy systems using the purest electrolytically refined aluminum. Up to the present time 15 papers (3) have been published, most of which are on the binary aluminum systems. Work is now in progress on the ternary systems, and it seems probable that most of the future work will be on ternary systems. Therefore this survey of the binary aluminum systems investigatcd up to the present time (the sixteenth paper of the series) concludes the first phase of this program. Certain qualitative relations between corresponding portions of the various binary diagrams as well as between different parts of the same diagram were noted some time ago by R. S. Archer.(4) In the present paper these relations and others are considered quantitatively by the application of well-known thermodynamic equations or by newly discovered empirical relations. No attempt will be made here to present the history of the development of the thermodynamic equations defining equilibrium or their application to metallic systems, although a list of references is given at the end of this paper for those who are interested in this phase of the subject. Three, major suites of igneous rocks were erupted in the Great Basin in middle and late Cenozoic time. The first resulted in eruption of andesitic rocks in the northern Great Basin between 42 and 34 m.y. ago. Between 34 and 17 m.y. ago this igneous activity migrated to the southwest, ending about 17 m.y. ago with the onset of crustal extension and north-south- trending Basin and Range (rift) faulting. The second volcanic suite erupted between 17 and 8 m.y. ago in the northern Great Basin. The third volcanic suite consists of andesitic and rhyolitic lavas and some basalt erupted between 22 to 7 m.y. ago in the western Great Basin along the northwest transcurrent Walker Lane fault zone. Hydrothermal ore deposits are associated with all suites of igneous rocks.

Like the caboose on the end of a long freight train L made up of mineral and metal processing and consuming industries, the mining industry progresses according to the movement of the train to which it is coupled. Sometimes the caboose rolls smoothly; occasionally it bumps along on the ties; almost always it is under criticism from someone for being too small, too large, too expensive, foolishly progressive, or hopelessly out of date. We who ride in the caboose are used to the rough by now, but it is nice now and then to have a bit of the smooth. Last year the train of industrial production rolled ahead swiftly and smoothly, and, except for a hot-box caused by strikes in copper mines, so did the caboose. As is brought out elsewhere in this issue, the outlook for 1956 is for more of the same.

PERHAPS the most widely used dispersants or gangue depressants in nonmetallic flotation are sodium silicates, which vary in silica-to-soda ratio from 1 to 3.75. Typical manufactured silicates in order of decreasing solubility and increasing amounts of silica are Metso, silica-to-soda ratio of 1.00; D, 2.00; RU, 2.40; K, 2.90; N, 3.22; and S-35, 3.75.* References in flotation literature's to the use of sodium silicates are often weak because they fail to mention the type of silicate used. Metso and silicate N have occasionally been mentioned, but when the type of silicate is not mentioned, it is usually assumed to be N, the cheapest of the soluble silicates and the one recommended by sodium silicate manufacturers as a flotation agent.

In the first paper on the Russell process presented by Mr. Stetefeldt, in May, 1884 (Transactions, xiii.), the process was treated from a purely theoretical standpoint.. 111 his second paper of October, 1886 (Transactions, xv,), the details of the plant, the chemicals used, and the manipulation in both mill and laboratory were treated. The aim of the present paper is to present economical results recently attained, new data affecting the preparation and manipulation of ore in the mill, and a more complete and systematic scheme of laboratory work. This paper is compiled mainly from Mr. Russell's notes of his own experience. Many of these notes, particularly those relating to work at Cusihuiriachic,* Mexico, have been upon work directly under the personal observation of the compiler, who takes pleasure in thus presenting to the Institute, data and considerations of much interest and value pot only to users of the Russell process, but to mill men generally. The description of the chemicals used and of the preparation of the mill-solutions being' in part the same now as when Mr. Stetefeldt's second paper was published, some use is here made of portions of that paper. No theoretical matter is here given. For a treatise containing also the theory of the process the reader is referred to Mr. Stetefeldt's complete work on " Lixiviation of Silver Ores by Hyposulphite Solutions," now in preparation. To facilitate the consultation of this paper, the following synopsis and index is prefixed. The figures in parenthesis indicate the page of this paper on which the subject is treated.
