MOST students that plan to enter the mining profession attempt to obtain some kind of practical experience before graduation. Six or seven years ago it was an easy matter for undergraduates to find employment during the summer vacation and return to school in the fall filled with enthusiasm to dig deeper into the theoretical field. However, during the past few years it has become extremely difficult for an inexperienced undergraduate to obtain even a menial job in mining. This was the situation which presented itself to the author and his partner, T. M. Patten several months before school closed in May, 1934. At that time, Mr. Patten's training consisted of two years study in Mining, and mine included three years' study in Mining Geology at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. With this technical training and no practical experience, we conceived the idea that custom assaying in some of the western mining districts should be a lucrative business. We thought that the renewed interest in prospecting for gold and the opening of new mines should provide more assay work, and believed that we might secure it if we were on the spot where the assaying was needed. We realized that it would be out of the question for us to obtain the necessary equipment with which to establish an assay office. Even if such an office were established we had a maximum of but three months during which to operate. So we determined to build some kind of inexpensive equipment that could be placed in an automobile, or trailer, and be moved from one camp to another. We then began to study the theoretical aspects of assaying and started experimental work with the equipment that we proposed to build.

IT is generally recognized that fluid is lost from rotary drilling mud s to permeable strata during normal drilling operations;1,2,3 but that this fluid is the filtrate from the mud, rather than the mud itself, has been shown by various workers.1,4,5 . The presence of this filtrate in oil-bearing or gas-bearing strata is undesirable and harmful. The decreased permeability of the stratum to oil effected by the presence of water has been pointed out by several investigators,6,7 and since, in the production of the reservoir fluid, the greatest pressure drop occurs immediately adjacent to the borehole, it follows that infiltered water is particularly objectionable in this region. Again, this filtrate tends to make electrical logs less reliable, since oil in the proximity of the borehole is probably flushed out to an appreciable ent by the water.8 Observation of side wall cores may be misleading for the same reason. Drill-stem tests in low-pressure areas may be of doubtful value where no oil is recovered, unless sufficient time is allowed for production of water lost from the mud. The infiltered water may hinder drilling operations by softening shales and causing sloughing; the "tight hole" occasioned by excessive deposition of filter cake in the hole is a common occurrence. The filter cake remaining on the face of the producing formation may itself sometimes be detrimental to production.9 In view of these implications of the importance of filtration of mud, an investigation was undertaken to determine the factors involved in the infiltration process, and to correlate these in such a manner that the values obtained in routine filter tests employing a conventional filter of the "wall-building tester" type,10 together with data on size of hole, drill pipe, and rate of mud circulation, could be used to estimate water loss and distance of penetration of the filtrate into strata.

For many years the problem of increasing ultimate recovery of oil from a reservoir has been a subject of interest to the oil industry. At present, a standard secondary recovery technique is to flood the reservoir with water once natural forces of the system are depleted. The permeability characteristics of the rock, together with interfacial forces which exist between the two fluids and the porous material. allow only part of the oil in the rock formation to be recovered by the water-flooding process. Laboratory experiments have shown that when detergents are added to the flooding water, the flow properties of oil in a porous rock arc improved. This improvement results in greater oil recovery. Even though higher recoveries are obtained using detergents, the extra cost associated with the method may make it economically unsatisfactory. To establish economic feasibility requires experimental laboratory measurement of fluid and rock properties together with a calculational procedure to predict field results. Pilot tests in the field may also be required. This paper presents a mathematical procedure for predicting detergent flood behavior. A number of reasonable simplifying assumptions are made to obtain a tractable system of equations. The resulting method may be regarded as a generalization of Buckley-Lev-crett' theory to solve simultaneously for water saturation and detergent concentration profiles. Consequently this type of calculation can be used in much the same manner as Buckley-Leverett theory is used to evaluate a water flood. The mathematical method employed is the so-called method of characteristics for solving hyperbolic partial differential equations. This application of the method is instructive because several other problems in reservoir analysis may be analyzed in a similar manner. FLUID FLOW EQUATIONS The flow behavior of oil and water without detergent through porous reservoir rock is usually expressed by Darcy's law and a continuity equation for each phase. Fluid viscosity is denoted by 11, p is the density, 4 is porosity, and I the time. The subscripts w and o refer to water and oil. The capillary forces in the system lead to a difference in pressure between phases. This may be expressed by the relation: Pm -P0 =Pc(S).........(5) The capillary pressure? P,, is determined experimentally as a function of saturation. DETERGENT BALANCE EQUATION Addition of detergent to the water phase affects the flow properties of the system. Capillary pressure and relative permeability become functions of detergent concentration, c, as well as fluid saturation. That is: P--P (S,c) and k,,,.- - -- k,,,. At low oil saturation values, the presence of detergent reduces capillary pressure and reduces the relative permeability ratio. Detergents are surface-active and adsorb on rock surfaces. The quantity adsorbed, a, will depend on the concentration c of detergent solution and may also depend on the saturation; thus, a = a(S,c). In this analysis we have assumed that the detergents used are water soluble but not oil soluble, and their movement is therefore restricted to the water phase. The dispersion of detergent in water is neglected by comparison with transfer by flow within the system. Detergent movement is determined by the water flux and adsorption: ? cv m = -F ?/?t (cs + a) We will assume that the quantity of detergent in solution is too small to significantly change water density or viscosity. The effect of treatment with ferrochrome lignosul-fonate on both sodium and calcium bentonites has been examined. In the early stages of treatment it appears that some base exchange of iron and chromium for sodium may occur with the sodium bentonite. Such exchange appears specific for exchange of sodium ions when the calcium ion concentration represents 40-5.5 per cent of the total exchangeable cations, and when additions of lignosulfonate are less than 1 lb per bbl. Adsorption appears entirely physical above 1 lb per bbl treatment level for all concentrations of calcium studied. Gel strength and plastic viscosity of both calcium and sodium bentonite systems were reduced with treatments of ferrochrome lignosulfonate up to 2 Ib per bbl, the greatest reduction occurring within a range of calcium concentration of 40-5.5 per cent of the total exchange capacity of the clay. INTRODUCTION The problem of control of viscosity and gel strength of drilling fluids by the action of thinners or dispersants has been studied by many investigators.1-7 In addition, much work has been done on formation of gel structure in clay suspensions. However, gel formation and structure still are incompletely understood, and the use of the various dispersing chemicals is based, to a large extent, on data almost entirely empirical in nature. In recent years the lignosulfonates have become increasingly important in the treatment and control of drilling fluids. More specifically, ferrochrome lignosulfonate has found rather wide acceptance, particularly in calcium systems.5-7 Lignosulfonates are refined lignin products made from spent sulfite liquor from which the fermentable sugars have been removed.15 The exact structure of lignin is not known; however, it is believed to be a phenolic propane type polymer which may exist as a branched chain or cross linked structure. The molecular weights of lignosulfonates probably range from 300 to 100,000 or more.15 A better understanding of the mechanism of adsorption of dispersants is essential before improvement and development of characteristics of drilling fluids and drilling fluid control is possible. This investigation was undertaken to determine the action of ferrochrome lignosulfonate on sodium and calcium montmOrillonite' LABORATORY INVESTIGATION A Stormer viscosimeter and Fann V-G meter were used to measure viscosity and gel strength. A Zeiss spectrophotometer was used for analysis of Fe and Cr and the flame attachment was employed in the analysis of Na, Ca and Mg. A General Electric X-ray diffraction unit utilizing Copper Ka radiation and a Ni-filter was utilized in the X-ray studies. PROCEDURE Two systems were studied. Predominately sodium clay, obtained from Wyoming, and a predominately calcium clay from Texas were used. These particular samples were chosen because of the extensive work of characterization completed by Mungan. Ionic base exchange capacity determined by flame photometry and total exchange capacity by the Kjehldahl method were obtained experimentally. A 7-per cent suspension of the sodium clay and a 20-per cent suspension of the calcium clay in distilled water were prepared by mixing with a high-speed mixer. The suspensions were allowed to stand for two weeks for complete hydration. Calcium chloride was added to portions of the sodium and calcium cla suspensions to obtain suspensions varying in Ca++ concentration as shown in Table I. A series of treatments was run with 500-ml portions of the original suspensions using a ferrochrome lignosulfonate. Treatment was carried out in the same way with each of the suspensions of varying Ca concentration. Viscosity and gel strength were measured and a filtrate obtained at each treatment level. Ten ml of filtrate were diluted to 50 ml, and aliquot portions of the 50 ml were taken for the Na, Ca, and Mg analysis by the flame photometer. The pH of these filtrates ranged from 7 to 7.3. In recent years a considerable tonnage of the 18 per cent chromium and 8 per cent nickel steels has been used in lightweight high-strength structures that must be resistant to deterioration under atmospheric conditions. These steels are austenitic in character and their strength can best be increased by cold-working. Although a marked increase in tensile strength is obtained, claims have been made that the cold-worked steels do not possess fully satisfactory elastic propertics. Under certain conditions, however, this has caused no great concern, because, as explained by Ragsdale,1,2 he cold-rolled steels have been widely applied for construction of lightweight, high-strength trains using spot welding for joining purposes. Ffield3 agrees that the ease with which thin sections of the cold-rolled 18-8 steels can be joined by spot welding is greatly in their favor, but that they would be more satisfactory if higher elastic properties and a higher modulus of elasticity could be obtained. He states that, as far as the mechanical properties are concerned, the straight chromium stainless steel is superior to the cold-worked 18-8 steel, and in order to illustrate, he prcsented the data of Fig. 1, which also give a stress-strain curve for a low-carbon 13 per cent Cr steel. Ffield† proposed that columbium-bearing or titanium-bearing cold-rolled 18-8 steels be given a heat-treatment (preferably for 1 hr.) in the range 400" to 600°C. to precipitate carbides in order to obtain better mechanical properties. Discussions by Sutton,4,5 de Ganahl,6,7,8 Krivobok and Lincoln,' Knerr,l0 and Thaden11 have given further information on the properties of the cold-rolled 18-8 steels compared with other materials used in lightweight, high-strength structures. The spatial distribution of the deformation modulii around the CSM/ONWI test facility was determined using an NX version of the CSM cell. Approximately 840 modulus measurements were made in six rings (each ring containing seven holes each 6 m in length) of boreholes. These parallel rings were spaced at 2.4 m intervals along the room. Contour plots of the modulii revealed that the depth of the blast damage zone varied both with perimeter position and distance away from the opening. The maximum depth of disturbance appeared to be of the order of 60 cm. At locations removed from the opening, the variability in modulus was quite high reflecting the presence of joints, faults, shear zones and foliation. A comparison of rock mass modulii (ER) with those obtained from the laboratory testing of core (E), revealed that ER [=] 0.5 E.

THE presence of deformation bands in cold-worked metals is known to influence the development of deformation textures1 but has not been considered in any theoretical treatments. At the present time the most rigorous theory of deformation textures appears to be based on Taylor's concept of homogeneous deformation of a crystal within a polycrystalline aggregate.' For each crystal the Taylor theory allows the operation of several equivalent combinations of five or more slip systems. Hence deformation bands can arise from the operation of a separate combination of slips in each of several portions within a crystal. On the other hand, a second type of band may occur as a consequence of slip on systems other than those selected on the basis on homogeneous deformation. This type appears to be associated with crystals of symmetrical orientations, such as the [loo] and [lll.] axial orientations in drawn wires of fcc single crystals studied by Ahlborn.3 In this note we propose a simple mechanism of deformation banding of the second type, and compare the theoretical results for wire drawing of [loo] and [Ill] with Ahlborn's observations. In outlini the model requires that the work to accomplish a given overall shape change by banding be less than or equal to the work to accomplish the same change by homogeneous deformation. While the work by homogeneous deformation, WH = ?T ;dri, can be calculated exactly by the equivalent methods of Taylor2 or of Bishop and Hill,4 the work by banding, WB, is less certain. The latter consists of 1) Wi, work by slip within a band, 2) Wb, work associated with formation of a boundary between bands, and 3) Wc, work to correct the difference in shape change arising from banding and homogeneous deformation. The Wi term can be evaluated explicitly for a band with an assumed set of slip systems, but a satisfactory analysis of Wb and Wc has not been obtained. Since WB = Wi + Wb + Wc WH, for banding to occur, however, a necessary condition is Wi = WH . Hence it seems reasonable to choose a band with the lowest value of Wi among competing bands consistent with Wi = WH, and then minimize Wb and Wc by arranging the physical configuration of the selected band. Wc is minimized by combining neighboring bands such that their net strain matches the macroscopic strain as closely as possible, and Wb is minimized by enforcing strain compatibility across the boundary between two neighboring bands, similar to the case of a grain boundary.5 It is realized that this procedure is not completely satisfactory, but it does seem to explain Ahlborn's observations reasonably well. The procedure is now outlined for the two corner orientations. a) [l00]. Fig. 1 shows a (100) stereographic projection. The results of the Taylor analysis for axi-symmetric flow by homogeneous deformation6 show that, while [loo] itself is unstable, the rotation of the tensile axis will nevertheless be confined to within about 15 deg from [loo]. Alternatively, less work may be expended by banding with slip on a pair of systems with primary-conjugate relationship, e.g., (ll1)[10l.I + (li1.)[110]. The mines and the mill of the Nevada-Massachusetts Co. are on the east slope of the Eugene Mountains, in Pershing County, Nevada, 8 miles northwest of Mill City, a station on the Southern Pacific R.R. and on the Victory Highway. Fig. 1. Supplies and, concentrate are transported by truck over an automobile road of easy grade. The property is at an average elevation of 5500 ft. and climatic conditions are generally favorable for continuous operation throughout the year. The ore treated is supplied by two adjoining mines, the Stank and the Humboldt. Physical and mineral characteristics of the ores produced by these two mines are substantially similar, although variations occur in hardness and mineral distribution.' The economic mineral is scheelite (CaWO4), composed, when pure, of 80.6 per cent tungstic trioxide (WO3) and 19.4 per cent lime (CaO).

In 1936 the Institute established the Anthony F. Lucas Gold Medal, which will be awarded from time to time "for distinguished achievement in improving the technique and practice of finding and producing petroleum." These awards will be sponsored by the Petroleum Division. Captain Lucas was a pioneer in the oil industry, one of the early wildcatters and a leading mining and petroleum engineer. He was famous as the discoverer of Spindletop. He became a member of the Institute in 1895 and in 1913 was the first Chairman of the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the Institute, the forerunner of the present Petroleum Division. He also headed the Committee in 1914, 1917 and 1918. The first medal was presented at the annual dinner in 1937, Feb. 17, to J. Edgar Pew. THE following paper has been prepared with the object of placing on record in the Transactions some facts concerning the present condition and future prospects of the coal industry of Illinois. In presenting it, the writer wishes to say that a considerable amount of the material contained is taken from the publications and records of the Illinois Coal Mining Investigations, the annual Coal Report of the State Mining Board, and the work of the State Geological Survey. Coal Beds and Mining Methods According to the latest maps of the State Geological Survey, there are only 19 of the 102 counties of the State some portion of whose territory is not within the borders of the coal measures. If outlying areas in Calhoun and Whiteside Counties are considered, the number is reduced to 17. This does not mean that all of the 85 counties that are partly or wholly underlain by coal measures will become producers, as there are some portions of the State in which the coal does not occur in beds of such thickness as to warrant the hope that it can be mined. The mining of coal is widespread, however, for in 1916 there was production from 51 of the 102 counties of the State. There seem to be no cases in which operations will be limited by depth, as none of the coal measures lie at depths much greater than those at which it has been proved that coal may be profitably mined in this field. In fact, the deepest shaft reaching a bed of bituminous coal in the United States is located in this State at Assumption, where coal only 3 ½ ft. (1.07 m.) thick is worked at a depth of 1004 ft.. (306 m.) The coal beds occur in the form of a basin which is deepest along a line extending through the central part of the State and bearing a, little west of north. The northern, western and southern borders of this basin lie within the boundaries of the State, but on the eastern side the Illinois field is continuous with the Indiana field. By measuring the hardness of metals at temperatures just above and just below their allotropic change point, it has been established that crystal structure has a real effect upon the strength of metals. The DPH of cobalt, iron, titanium, uranium, and zirconium have been measured at temperatures up to 1000°C. It was found that the body-centered-cubic crystal structure is always the softer structure when it is involved in an allotropic transformation. The close-packed and more complex structures are inherently harder, and may be expected, therefore, to be better base materials for high strength alloys. IT has been observed that for metals with nearly the same melting point (i.e., tin and lead, magnesium and aluminum) the metal with the more complex crystal structure has a higher tensile strength and hardness. It might be asked whether this effect is really caused by the difference in crystal structure; and, if so, just what is the contribution of crystal structure to the strength of these metals. A qualitative answer to these questions can be obtained by measuring the change in hardness produced by the change in structure in metals exhibiting allotropic forms. The evidence for changes in mechanical properties during allotropic transformations is rather meager. In 1909, Rosenhain and Humfrey' observed that "ß" iron showed much less deformation at the transformation temperature than a iron. By means of a torsion test, Lee found that iron bars were "critically plastic" at the a-7 transformation temperature. Sauerwald and Knehans have shown that the dynamic hardness of iron increases between 900" and 1000°C. In 1930, Albert Sauveur' presented data on the hardness, tensile strength, and torsional strength of pui-e iron up to 1000°C. He concluded, "At 900°C, the a iron transforms into y iron, and this is accompanied by increased strength and stiffness and decreased ductility." The same year, Schischokin" obtained data on the hardness of thallium at temperatures above and below its transformation temperature. His data are replotted on semilogarithmic coordinates as Fig. 1. The fact that his data fall on straight lines in this type of plot is believed to attest to the purity of his metal and the accuracy of his results. In 1941, Nadai and Manjoine" obtained tensile data on pure iron with an indicated increase in strength at about 900°C. These experiments make it quite evident that changes in mechanical properties occur when a metal transforms from one crystal structure to another; but, except for Schischokin's data on thallium, none of the measurements seem accurate enough to determine the relative magnitude of the mechanical property change. Materials The metals that have been examined for changes in hardness during transformation include l—as- deposited commercial electrolytic cobalt about 99.7 pct pure, 2—Armco ingot iron, 3—are-melted iodide titanium of a purity in excess of 99.8 pct, 4—uranium of a purity in excess of 99.5 pct, 5—are-melted iodide zirconium of a purity in excess of 99.8 pct, 6—annealed, 0.08 pct C, rimmed steel, and 7—commercially pure RC55 titanium. While the purity of the first five of these materials leaves something to be desired, it will be noted that the observed hardness discontinuities occurred at the accepted transformation temperatures. (These temperatures are indicated by vertical arrows in Figs. 1 and 3 through 7.) The last two materials are commercial alloys introduced to show the effect of minor alloying elements upon the hot hardness curve. Apparatus Hardnesses at elevated temperatures were determined by means of a vacuum hot hardness machine. A diagram showing the basic features of this machine appears as Fig. 2. In the summer of 1909 the Boston & Montana reduction department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. completed a new flue system, at a cost of about $1,100,000, and as this includes the largest and highest chimney in the world, and some new features of flue construction, a description will be of interest. At the Spokane meeting of the Institute in September, 1909, a brief mention was made of this flue system, in discussing Mr. Brunton's presidential paper on the Progress of Metallurgy in the West, and a promise was given that when a long enough time had elapsed, so that operating results could be given, a paper would be offered. The smelting plant includes blast furnaces, MacDougall roasters, gas-fired reverberatories, and converters.

The stress-strain behavior of Fe-Co and Fe- V alloys containing up to 25 pct solute have been studied in the temperature range 25° to - 196°C. The microyield stress is independent of temperature for all alloys studied, while the temperature dependence of the ordinary yield stress is large and comparable to that for unalloyed iron. An alloy-softening phenomenon is observed for many alloys relative to unalloyed iron, and appears to be a consequence of removal of inter-stitials from solution and their subsequent agglomeration. The ductile to brittle transition temperature is increased markedly by both cobalt and vanadium. Transmission electron microscopy observations reveal that cross slip and cell formation are restricted with increasing solute, which can account for many aspects of yielding and fracture behavior. IRON and other metals of bcc structure slip on many planes of the (111) zone at moderate and elevated temperatures, giving rise to wavy glide. At low temperatures, however, there is a tendency for slip to be restricted to planes of only one or two crystallographic types; in the case of Fe-Si alloys for example, (110) glide predominates, giving rise to planar slip bands."' Restriction of cross slip at low temperatures in iron has been linked by Brown and Ekvall3 to increased strain hardening in the preyield microstrain region, leading to an apparently large temperature dependence of the yield stress. Support for this view has been provided by Lawley and Gaigher4 from a transmission electron microscope study of molybdenum. They concluded that dislocations at lower temperatures, by virtue of their inability to change planes readily, are unable to interact and annihilate, leading to an increase in internal stress and work-hardening capacity. Restriction of cross slip at low temperatures has also been suggested to be an important factor in determining the ductile to brittle transition of single-phase solids, including metals of bcc structure.5 It is pertinent to note that most solute elements tend to raise the ductile to brittle transition temperature of poly crystalline ferrite,6,7 although in some cases, e.g., Fe-Cr7 and Fe-Al,8 the dilute alloys may actually yield at lower stresses than unalloyed iron. It appears, therefore, that solute elements may have an effect analogous to lowering the test temperature with regard to restricting cross glide. Such an effect has indeed been observed in the ionic alloy system KCl-KBr,9 in which bromine atoms, although causing little misfit and consequently little effect on the yield stress of KC1, have a pronounced effect in restricting wavy glide and inducing brittleness. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the effects of selected solute atoms on the yield stress and fracture behavior of iron, and to elucidate in turn how the slip character was related to these properties. Since it is known that interstitial atoms exert a strong influence on the mechanical behavior of iron, the solute elements chosen for study were vanadium, which reacts strong with interstitials,10 and cobalt, which does not form highly stable interstitial compounds." EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Four-pound ingots of each of the following alloys were vacuum-melted in zirconia crucibles: Fe-1, 5, 10, 25 at. pct Co, and Fe-1, 4, 10, 20 at. pct V. An ingot of unalloyed iron from the same original stock as that used for the alloy was remelted under similar conditions to eliminate variations in interstitial content arising from differing thermal histories. Chemical analyses of the iron, cobalt, and vanadium melt stock are listed in Table I. All ingots were rolled and swaged, commencing at 850°C, to 1/4-in.-diameter bar. The bars were then annealed at 850°C for 1 hr (except that the 10 and 20 pct V alloys were heated for 2 hr) to give a uniform equiaxed grain size of about 0.05 mm. Tensile samples of 0.125 in. diameter by 0.8 in. gage length were utilized for studies of the ductile to brittle transition. A second set of tensile samples were utilized for microstrain experiments in which strain sensitivity of 1 x 10"6 was achieved by a capacitance method.3 Cylindrical compression samples 0.250 in. diameter by 0.4 in. long also were prepared to study the influence of composition on the macroscopic yield stress, and for metallographic analyses of defor-

INTRODUCTION One cannot discuss the subject of "Raising Capital in the 1990s" without having a crystal ball and a reliable fortune teller. This discusses "Raising Capital for the 1990sW, which is what Metal1 Mining Corporation did in 1987. We raised (3166 million in an IPO (initial public offering) that was originally planned for only some (375 million. Why did we raise this money? How did we do it, and why was this IPO so successful? The answer to the first question requires a description of the promoter and principal shareholder of Metal1 Mining Corporation, Metallgesellschaft AG. This West Germany company was founded over 100 years ago in Frankfurt as a trading house for non-ferrous metals. It has developed into one of the world's leading firms in the non-ferrous metals industry. The company's worldwide activities in all areas of that business include mining, smelting and refining, the trading of ore, base and precious metals, the production of semi-fabricated and finished metal products, and the provision of engineering, construction and transportation services. Metallgesellschaft AG has also diversified into many other areas, the most significant of which are manufacturing, the production of chemicals, the development and application of technical and chemical processes, the planning and construction of industrial plants, and activities associated with finance, insurance, shipping and freight forwarding, and the provision of barter and countertrade services. The company maintains a network of more than 100 offices around the world; it employs some 25,000 people in its worldwide activities. Metallgesellschaft AG established the American Metal Company, a predecessor of AMAX Inc. one of the largest ventures undertaken by Metallgesellschaft AG then was the acquisition, through the American Metal Company, of a majority share in the Mexican Penoles mine, a large lead and silver deposit. METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG Figure 1 depicts an overview of Metallgesellschaft AG before and at the time the initial public offering of Metall Mining Corporation's shares took place. It shows that mining was far from the centre of Metallgesellschaft's activities. Therefore, it could not expect to receive an extraordinary amount of board attention. Thus, mining investments not only had to compare well with other mining opportunities, but were in fierce competition with projects from other divisions. In addition, mining was sub-divided into two separate departments -- domestic and international. These two departments had different management styles and diverging interests which resulted in a minimum co-operation between them. The domestic mining department was primarily interested in the survival of the local mines. These mines were characterized by rising operating costs and declining ore grades. It took a special commitment and continued ingenuity to develop and adjust to local conditions, and modern mining and processing technology, in order to remain competitive, or at least survive within the international mining industry. In recent years bismuth telluride has received considerable attention, primarily due to its value as a thermoelectric material. Since there seems to be little dependence of thermoelectric effect upon crystal orientation1 many of those who have previously worked with this material have been unconcerned with knowing its crystallographic angles to any degree of accuracy. However, when one studies deformation modes, lattice stresses, or the aniso-tropy of mechanical properties of a material, knowledge of the interplanar angles and their relationships as depicted in a stereographic projection becomes essential. Lange2 originally published crystallographic data which described the structure of bismuth telluride as rhombohedral with the space group A more recent work by Francombe3 presented data which corroborated and refined the original findings of Lange. In addition, Francombe established that there is no coexistence of rhombohedral and hexagonal lattices in bismuth telluride as was suggested by Vasenin and Konovalov,4 and that the structure can be treated as a pseu do hexagonal structure with an axial ratio, c/a, of 6.95 for convenience of presentation and study. The interplanar angles and standard projections for several unalloyed hexagonal metals have been previously published,5-9 but the present work appears to be unique in that it presents data for a rhombohedral compound in pseudohexagonal form. As a pseudohexagonal structure, this material has an extremely large axial ratio as compared to the usual range of approximately 1.5 to 1.9 for the hexagonal metals. Since the interplanar angles are a function only of c/a, the angular relations between various planes for Bi,Te3 will be grossly different
