DEVELOPMENT of the lime industry in Ste, Genevieve County began in a crude way in 1840. According to information furnished by the Missouri Bureau of Geology, in the early days small vertical kilns built of stone were used, and wood was the fuel. Modern development began in 1904 when one company introduced steel shells lined with firebrick. Within a few years two more companies erected similar plants, and in 1925 a fourth company began operations. Thus there are today four lime companies at Ste. Genevieve, all operating at high capacity and with a gradually increasing production. GEOLOGY The limestone of Ste. Genevieve County, which has the chemical composition and purity required for lime burning, is the upper 80 or 90 ft. of Spergen formation. The Missouri Bureau of Geology, in its geological map of Ste. Genevieve County, gives the Spergen formation a total thickness of 160 ft., but only the upper portion is pure enough for lime burning, with an average raw-stone analysis of 98.7 per cent CaCO3; 0,35 Si02; 0,3 R203; 0.35 MgCO3; 0.3 SO3. The Spergen, one member of the Meramac group, Iowa series, of the Mississippian system, underlies an area approximately 12 miles long north and south, by 5 miles wide east and west (Fig. 1) in Ste. Genevieve County. The entire eastern two-thirds of Ste. Genevieve County is sedimentary, the formations dipping gently toward the east on an average grade of about 4 per cent, or 2 ½ °. Thus the outcrops of the various sedimentaries run approxi-mately north and south. A line running west from Ste. Genevieve crosses the outcrops of the sedimentaries, ranging from the top of the Mississippian to the Ozarkian geological system in a space of 12 miles. Thus with the gentle dip of 2 1/2° the 160-ft. thickness of the Spergen formation stretches out in its outcrop so that it is approximately one mile

Many heats of steel of low carbon value have been known to produce brittle pieces of steel. The brittleness is believed to be due to the impurities located within the grain boundaries. Such brittle steels have been examined with an optical microscope to ascertain the nature and the amount of the impurities present at the grain boundaries. Due to the relatively low resolving power of the optical microscope, the impurities are not visible in fine detail. The writer obtained some sheet steel and proceeded to determine the location of the impurities and to show the application of the electron microscope to the study of grain boundaries. One sample was known to be capable of becoming embrittled, whereas another sample was believed to be much less susceptible to embrittlement. Treatment of Specimens The specimens were embrittled by annealing above the A3 point under mildly oxidizing conditions. One piece of ingot iron could not withstand a 90" bend, whereas another piece of ingot iron was not affected and could withstand a 90" bend. The brittle piece was then annealed at a high temperature in a hydrogen atmosphere. The annealed ingot iron was termed cured and could withstand a 90" bend very easily. The three specimens examined will be designated as brittle, good. and cured in the discussion that follows. Procedure The sizes of the specimens were as follows: one piece of brittle ingot iron-3/8 by 35 in.; one piece of good ingot iron-96 by 1/8 in.; one piece of cured ingot iron-36 by 54 in. The specimens were too small to be polished by hand and therefore were mounted in bakelite. The polishing procedure was carried out in the conventional manner with the use of 1/0 through 3/0 papers, and the final polish was done with alumina on a billiard cloth. The specimens were then etched in a 4 pct solution of picral in alcohol, and then they were examined through an optical microscope. An area was chosen that showed distinct grain boundaries, and an effort was made to keep near this area when pulling the replicas REPLICA TECHNIQIJE The replica technique used in the preparation of the replicas for examination under the electron microscope is described in Electron Metallography.' It consists essentially of the following steps: 1. Obtaining a suitably etched specimen. 2. Applying a swab of ethylene di-chloride on the surface. 3. Applying a formvar solution on the surface. 4. Placing a screen on any desired spot. 5. Breathing on the fornivar layer. 6. Applying scotch tape on the screen and film. 7. Pulling the film and the screen up with the Scotch tape. 8. Separating the screen from the Scotch tape. This replica technique is very similar to the one described by Harker and Shaefer. However, with the added step, the percentage of replicas removed is very much higher regardless of the length of the time from the etching of the specimen to the actual pulling of the replica. The replicas were then shadow cast with manganese at a filament height to replica distance ratio of 1 1/2:7. This produced a very high contrast replica for use in the electron microscope. One of the dificulties encountered with this study was the restricted area of the specimen. The width of the specimens was the same as that of the 200 mesh nickel supporting screen. In order to increase the effective area, the screens were cut down as shown in Fig 1. The arrow indicates the direction in which the replica was pulled. This operation made it possible to obtain a large percentage of good replicas. Fig 3 shows an electron micrograph of a brittle piece of ingot iron and a grain boundary that was polished mechanically. The surface is very rough probably due to the incomplete removal of the flowed layer by the picral etchant. The grain boundary does show evidence of impurities. It was decided to electropolish the specimens to obtain a much smoother surface than the one obtained by mechanical polishing. ELECTROPOLISHING The specimens were cut in half to expose the metal on the back side. The exposed metal had sufficient area to make good electrical contact and electropolishing was carried out easily. The conditions for electropolishing were 0.9 amp, 35 volts, and 25 sec. in an electrolyte composed of 850 cc of ethyl alcohol, 100 cc distilled water, and 50 cc of perchloric acid. ThREe years ago it was decided by the management to granulate the matte that is produced in the smelter of the St. Joseph Lead Co. at Hereulaneum, Mo., thereby doing away with a large amount of labor in handling the matte and in subsequent crushing. On Mar. 1, 1915, the granulator was put in operation and up to Jan. 1, 1916, 18,735 tons had been granulated. The four blast furnaces have a daily output of about 280 tons of pig lead and 100 tons of matte assaying about 11.0 per cent. Pb. It is expected that projected improvements in roasting methods will eliminate more sulphur from the charge, and cut down the matte-fall to about one-half of the present figure. The blast furnaces are tapped into movable forehearths or settlers, 6 ft. by 4 ft. by 22 in., the slag overflowing into 27-cu. ft. slag cars which are hauled to the dump by electric locomotives. Previous to the adoption of granulation, the matte was tapped from the forehearths into small slag pots which were dumped after cooling. The matte cakes were broken with sledges, and transported to the crushing plant for fine crushing and screening. Here the matte was reduced to 1/4-in. size before being fed to the roaster bins. A Wedge and a Holthoff mechanical furnace are used for preroasting before sintering on the Dwight and Lloyd machines. The matte is returned to the furnaces as an iron flux until the gradually accumulating copper content reaches about 7 per cent., after which it is put aside to be concentrated in a small copper blast furnace, the resultant high-grade matte being sold. When the matte does not settle readily from the slag, two settling devices are often used, the second one being a large catch-pot, which gathers any matte that may overflow from the forehearth, the slag then overflowing from the catch-pot into the slag cars. When full of matte, the catch-pot is removed, allowed to cool, and the contents broken and crushed. a With the present plan of granulating, the matte is tapped into 6-cu. ft. iron ladles. SIXTEEN steels containing different combinations of chromium and molybdenum, in amounts up to 5 per cent of each element, were examined for microstructure and hardness after air cooling and after furnace cooling from suitable austenitizing temper- [ ] atures. Diagrams summarizing the structures and hardness resulting from these two cooling rates are presented (Figs. 3, 4, 7).† Data were also obtained on the influence of these two elements, individually and in combination, on the depth 0f decarburization observed after furnace cooling (Fig. 8). COMPOSITION OF MATERIAL The chemical composition of the steels investigated is given in Table I. The plain carbon steel was made in a 25-ton Heroult electric-arc furnace, while the alloy steels were made in a 4.5-ton Ajax-Northrup elec- [ ] tric induction furnace. The cast ingots were hot-rolled to I.75-in. bars. AIR-COOLED SERIES The I.75-in. bars were forged to flat plates, 0.25 in. thick, from which specimens 0.5 in. wide by 2 in. long were cut. The specimens were pretreated to improve their homogeneity by heating to I830°F. (1000°C.) for 20 min. and oil quenching. They were then reheated to I740°F. Apart from their scientific interest, these [] data are needed chiefly in order to treat data on carburization, on the rate of formation of pearlite, and on the rate of austenizing in a quantitative way. 1,2,9,10 In the present investigation rates of diffusion of nickel in -?-Fe over wide temperature and concentration ranges have been determined, and the effects of carbon, of impurities, and of grain size on these rates have been studied. Claussen,3 using the data of Fry,4 has calculated the diffusion coefficient of nickel [ ] in -?-Fe as 9.2 X 10-11 sq. cm. per sec. at 1200T., but had no data from which to calculate the variation of D with concentration, temperature, and percentage of carbon. A basic problem in connection with manganese is to find economical ways to utilize domestic resources. As a part of its program to conserve domestic mineral resources and to reduce dependence of foreign sources, the Bureau of Mines had conducted extensive research to broaden manganese technology and to find economical, technically-feasible processes for recovering manganese from these low-grade resources. This paper analyzes some of the major difficulties which have been encountered in previously proposed processes for treating low-grade manganese ores and discusses a process which may circumvent many of these difficulties. Vast deposits of low-grade manganese ore exist in the U.S., yet domestic production is insignificant compared to the more than 2 million tons of ore imported yearly into this country.' A basic problem in connection with manganese is to find economical ways to utilize domestic resources.2 As a part of its program to conserve domestic mineral resources and to reduce dependence on foreign sources, the Bureau of Mines has conducted extensive research to broaden manganese technology and to find economical, technically feasible processes for recovering manganese from these low-grade resources. Although a great many processes have been proposed for treating domestic manganese resources, a failing of many of them is that too many steps are involved for economical operation.' Some of the major processes that have been proposed were reviewed by Norman and Kirby.3,4 Chlorination processes have become increasingly useful as a means of recovering valuable metals from raw materials, because the relative cost of chlorine (Cl2) and hydrogen chloride (HC1) has decreased through the years, and because the corrosion resistance of materials of construction has been improved. The objective of these processes is to form metal chlorides that are more volatile or water-soluble than are the corresponding oxides or sulfides; these compounds then can be separated from the gangue or other minerals by volatilization or leaching. Several chlorination processes for the recovery of manganese have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines5-8 and others; the major chlorination processes were reviewed in 1963, and their main features were compared.4 In all these processes, the simultaneous leaching or volatilization of iron chlorides with manganese chloride (MnCl2) is a problem, and the more iron that is present, generally the greater the problem. The leaching step is not highly selective, and the product of this step is, at best, suitable only for the production of ferromanganese or for further processing to remove iron. The product of the volatilization step is, in all cases, a mixture of iron and manganese chlorides that contains too much iron even for ferromanganese production, and must undergo additional processing steps for iron removal. THERMODYNAMIC CONSIDERATIONS The literature indicates that the desired chlorination reactions will proceed at practical rates at temperatures near 1200°K (927°C). Free energy changes at 1200°K for the critical steps of the reduction and chlorination reactions9-11 follow: Most of the research on chlorination processes for manganese recovery has been done with HC1 rather than with C12, for the following three main reasons: 1) Recycling of the chlorinating agent, which is economically vital, appeared to be easier for HC1

A high-pressure wellhead lubricator has been developed to facilitate telemetering electrical measurements from subsurface reservoirs to the surface with the well under normal flowing conditions. The field unit in use at the present time employs a 5/16-in diameter, single-conductor armored cable and is to be used in wells with surface pressures up to 5,000 psi. It has a pressure sealing element that maintains a continuous and absolute seal around the cable as it enters or leaves the tubing at speeds up to 175 ft per minute. A cable injecting device is used which obviates sinker bars or weight sections on the instrument. INTRODUCTION The development of instruments for securing physical measurements in pressure wells has been confined in the past to those instrument which would operate on a wire line and record the necessary measurements in the downhole instrument itself, or those which would operate on an electric cable in a well with the surface pressure killed by the use of weighted fluids or by the use of tubing plugs. In one case the accuracy of the measurements is questionable, and in the other the range of application is very limited. Considerable work has been done by other interests to provide effective means to accomplish the necessary telemetering. The U. S. Bureau of Mines developed a wellhead lubricator prior to 1947 which permitted a 5/16-in diameter single-conductor cable to be lowered into a well with a surface pressure of approximately 500 psi. This unit was used successfully in a number of tests in Oklahoma. A company which tests wells has recently offered on a service basis a wellhead lubricator with a 3/16-in diameter cable that reportedly operates up to 2,500 psi surface pressures. Each of the above operates on a staging principle to effect a seal. In both of these units some leakage of well fluid occurs when the cable is moved. SPECIFICATIONS FOR DESIGN In order to provide the maximum flexibility in its use, the following parameters were established for the design of our high-pressure wellhead lubricator: L An absolute well fluid seal up to 5,000 psi surface pressures. 2. Means for raising and lowering the instrument at speeds of at least 100 ft per minute. 3. Provision for the instrument to enter and leave the well without disturbing the well flow or the reservoir conditions. 4. A cable large enough to provide suitable electrical characteristics and suitable mechanical properties. 5. A method of operation that will not damage the well in any way. The present high-pressure wellhead lubricator field unit fulfills the above requirements. DESCRIPTION OF THE UNIT AND ITS OPERATION The cable selected for this use is the standard Amergraph 1H2 as manufactured by the American Steel and Wire Co. This particular cable is normally used by the Halliburton Oil Well Cementing Co. in their conventional well logging operations. Although the cable presents a noncircular cross-section (Fig. l), its diameter is very consistent; lor example, maximum diameter is 0.325 in., minimum diameter 0.314 in. This [actor permits the use of the sealing element, as later described. Early in the development of the high-pressure wellhead lubricator it was apparent that we could not effect a direct gas seal around a moving 1H2 cable. This becomes evident when an examination of the cable cross-section is made. The voids between the strands of the outer armor provide natural channels lor the flow and escape in large quantities of a low-viscosity fluid such as gas. However, it is relatively simple to

ALLUVIAL gold was first discovered in Guiana in 1852, in the sands of the Arataye river; by Paulino, a Brazilian convict. During the following years, gold was found also in the rivers Orapu, Cirubé, etc. In 1873 the famous placers of the Sinnamary system were opened: Saint-Elie, Dieu-Merci, Adieu-Tat, and Couriége. This group of mines has produced nearly $10,000,000, according to official records, not including the gold that escaped the taxes. The discoverer was a mulatto named Vitalo. Except in a few rich spots, the gold was rather evenly distributed along the creeks. In one instance, gold was found in the red dirt from the slope of a hill, which, after transport to the creek, gave an amount of 150 kilograms. The placers of the Mana system, Enfin, Elysée, Pas-Trop-Tot, date from 1878, and their production has been about $5,000,000. In 1888, the Awa placers, along the boundary between the French and Dutch Guianas, on the Maroni and its tributaries, were discovered. They have yielded $12,000,000. The only industrial company,, the Dutch Guiana French Mining Co., produced in 15 years about 2,500 kg. of gold, worth $1,500,000. From 1893 dates the famous Carsewene discovery, in territory then in dispute between France and Brazil. A settlement was made recently in favor of Brazil, by arbitration of the Switzerland State Council. Carsewene is said to have pro-duced about $18,000,000 in six years (1894-1900), but not even one-fourth of the production went through French Guiana and

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining-maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may he what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will he saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining-reports, naps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

An 1820°C isothermal cross section of the Ti-Ta-C ternary diagram was prepared from X-ray diffraction and metallographic data. No phases other than those appearing in the three binary diagrams were observed. At temperatures above the titanium transition temperature titanium and tantalum form a complete series of solid solutions containing up to 2 atomic pct C. The phases Tic and TaC also form a continuous series of solid solutions extending across the diagram. PREVIOUS work on this alloy system was very limited. Of the three binary constitution diagrams involved, only one, the Ta-C system was available in the literature. Preliminary data on the other two systems was received from the investigators during the course of the investigation and both have been published in recent months. It had been shown that Tic and TaC formed a continuous series of solid solutions, but the range of carbon content in this phase was not known. While Ta2C had been described, its solubility for or reactions with other carbides had not been reported. It was not known whether or not any ternary compounds occurred in the system. The present program was undertaken to determine experimentally the general form of the ternary diagram. It is hoped that the results will be of value in furthering the development of sintered carbide cutting materials and high temperature ceramets, many of which contain combinations of Tic and TaC. The Binary Systems Of the three binary diagrams involved only that of Ta-C was available at the time this project was started. The diagram of Ellinger¹ redrawn in Fig. 1, shows a hexagonal phase Ta2C having a very small composition range and a cubic TaC phase having a composition range of from 40 to 50 atomic pct C. The authors made a separate determination of the composition range of TaC using lattice constant values and found the range to extend from 40 to 49.7 atomic pct C in good agreement with Ellinger's diagram. Two determinations of the Ti-Ta system have appeared recently.2,3 These two diagrams are in good agreement and show that ß titanium and tantalum form a complete series of solid solutions. The Ti-C diagram by Cadoff and Nielsen4 shows a very limited solubility of carbon in both a and ß titanium. The single carbide formed persists over a wide range of carbon contents. Several values for the upper limit of carbon content of this phase have been reported."' The highest value obtained in the M.I.T. Laboratory was 47.5 atomic pct C with a lattice constant of 4.328?.5 Fattinger7 describes a gas carburization method which he claims produces stoichiometric Tic although he does not present any data showing that he actually had 50 atomic pct combined carbon. Last August, American Commercial Barge Line Co. (ACBL) began moving coal from mines on the old Camp Breckinridge property in Western Kentucky to TVA's new 2600 MW steam plant at Cumberland City, Tenn. By April of 1973, this movement will reach a level of 7 million tpy. TVA bought the coal rights to this property from the General Services Administration in 1965 for approximately $7 million and is now in possession of reserves containing about 120 million tons of recoverable No. 9 coal, and about the same recoverable amount of No. 11 coal. TVA then contracted through competitive bidding with Peabody Coal Co. to mine the No. 9 seam through two slope shafts. The mines are about 300-ft deep and are separated by the one major fault on this property. The mine portals are approximately 3 ½ mi apart, with the northern portal being over nine miles distant from the Ohio River.
