PETROLEUM technology was the sole subject of discussion at the meeting of the Petroleum Division at the Baker Hotel, Dallas, Texas, Oct. 6-7, except for the brief talks by President Becket and Secretary Parsons at the dinner on Friday evening. Even on this occasion, following the scheduled official features, it was in order to talk "shop." W. E. Wrather and E. A. Stephenson, respectively Chairman and Secretary of the Division, had planned for a meeting of this nature and by preference, apparently, the 122 who registered fell in with the scheme wholeheartedly. Not because the competent local committee had not provided for it, but by choice, the members just did not sign up for entertainment or field trips, but did attend largely the three technical sessions and engage in earnest discussion of the approximately dozen excellent papers. In this connection, and without question, the high lights of the meeting were the papers by Morris Muskat and R. D. Wyckoff, and Prof. W. K. Lewis. The former, entitled, "A Theoretical Analysis of Waterflooding Networks," had been entirely demathematized by the authors for presentation at this and the Los Angeles meetings; the author of the latter, which was on the "Physical-chemical Relationships of Hydrocarbon Gas-liquid Mixtures at High Pres¬sures," had airplaned to Dallas in the company of Dr. H. D. Wilde from Chicago in order to present his paper at the final session on Saturday morning.

THE rates of growth of the carbide phases MC and M2C in the Ta-C and Cb-C systems have been measured at various temperatures and the results used to estimate the rate of carbon diffusion within the inter metallic phases. Sheets of high-purity tantalum (50 ppm Cb, <25 ppm Ti, 10 ppm Fe, 5 ppm Cr, <50 ppm Mo, W, and all other metals, 15-75 ppm O2, 10-30 ppm N2, and 10-30 ppm C) approximately 1/4 by 1/2 by 0.020 in. were heated to temperatures between 1800" and 2700°C in a carbon resistor furnace under an atmosphere of argon plus sufficient methane to maintain an excess of carbon at the sample surface. The thicknesses of the carbide layers, illustrated in Fig. 1, were measured with a filar micrometer and plotted logarithmically as a function of time. Fig. 2 is a typical plot for the TaC phase. The points may be represented within experimental error by lines with slope equal to 1/2; therefore the growth of the layers may be described by the usual expression X = kt1/2, where X is the layer thickness, t is the time, and k is a temperature-dependent constant. From these data and compositions at the phase boundaries, it is possible to estimate values for the diffusion coefficients of carbon in each phase, assuming that layer growth occurs by carbon diffusion alone, and that the dif-fusivity is not a function of composition within each

INTRODUCTION THE experimental work reported herein was inspired by the publication of a paper by Grange and Stewart,1 in which it was suggested that at low chromium contents the effect of this element on the [M,] point was greater than at higher chromium contents. It was argued that, if a small increase of chromium in solution in austenite caused a sharp lowering of the [M,] point, it might lead to an explanation of occasional unsolved stress cracking of SAE 52100 during heat treatment. Commercial hardening is carried out at temperatures of incomplete solution, leaving carbides available to enrich the austenite during any inadvertent increase in temperature. Such enrichment of the austenite in chromium content would lower the [ M,] point nearer room temperature where cracking is more likely to occur. Accordingly, it was decided to investigate the effect of chromium, in quantities between o and 2 pct, on the[ M,] point of commercial steels. Fig I summarizes the data available on chromium steels. For purposes of comparison, the [M, ] temperature values were corrected by means of the Grange and Stewart formula§ to (I) Hypoeutectoid compositions: 0.50 pct carbon and 0.80 pct manganese (2) Hypereutectoid compositions: 1.00 pct carbon and 0.35 pct manganese. Only the steels having compositions reasonably close to these corrected values were included, because large adjustments inevitably introduce increased errors such as are experienced in using the formula. The straight lines of Fig I were drawn by the authors. These data obviously do not settle the question of the effect of chromium on the [M,] point, particularly at low chromium contents. While it is fairly well established that chromium causes the [M,] to be lowered when present in quantities of I pct or more, Grange and Stewart1 have suggested that in small amounts (less than I. pct) it is more effective in lowering the[ M,] point, while Klier and Troiano2 have suggested that in small amounts it is less effective in lowering the []M,] point. Payson and Savage3 concur with Klier and Troiano and further suggest that the effect is not linear at these concentrations. Rose and Fischer4 report that small amounts of chromium actually raise the-[M,] point of a 0.20 carbon steel. MATERIAL Two series of 35 lb induction heats were melted for this work, the analyses of which are given in Table I. One series was aimed at 0.50 pct carbon and 0.80 pct manganese with chromium additions in 0.25 pct increments from o to 1.5 pct with a single heat at 2.0 pct Cr. This series was considered necessary because the commercial heat treatment of SAE 52100 does not generally introduce more than about 0.60 pct carbon in solution in the austenite. The high

At the United Verde mine the 9-2D stope on the 4050 ft level is located within the north sulphide mass lying some 800 ft north of the main sulphide ore body. In 1948 it was estimated that this block contained 85,000 tons of ore at 4% copper and 9.2% zinc. The north ore body is a lenticular replacement deposit in the black schist, extending from about 100 ft above the 3750 level to a distance below the 4500 level yet to be determined. Although the mineralized zone approaches 1000 ft in length, only 300 ft is of economic importance. In width it varies from a maximum of 60 ft to about 3 ft at the north end, and is characterized by pinching and swelling in the ore zone. One of these larger swells is being mined as the 9-2D stope. Mining costs at greater depth, together with the expected grade of ore after dilution, necessitated a low cost mining method to permit profitable stoping operations. Based on the results obtained in a number of Canadian mines, it was decided to develop the ore body for stoping by the Aldermac or bench method of diamond drill blastholes; however, this plan was subsequently changed and the radial or ring method adopted. Such a method seemed to offer the advantage of large tonnages at low cost, and obviate the necessity of waste fill. This latter point was of particular importance, since the present waste system does not extend below the 3000 level.

Phase equilibria in the Ti-Mn-Mo system have been investigated in the composition range 100 to 60 pct Ti and in the temperature range 550 to 1150°C. Three out of ten isothermal sections are presented as well as seven vertical sections, projections of the beta space and the surface of incipient melting. A STUDY of the system Ti-Mn-Mo was undertaken as part of a program to aid in the development of titanium-base phase equilibrium diagrams of potential technical importance to alloy development. The scope of the investigation included the composition range 100 to 60 wt pct Ti (all compositions refer to weight percentages) and the temperature range 550" to 1150°C. A surface of incipient melting was constructed from measurements of a large number of alloys. In the binary system Ti-Mo,&apos; the high temperature modification of titanium generally spoken of as the p phase is stabilized to successively lower temperatures with increasing alloy content. There are no known intermediate phases, and complete miscibility exists between body-centered cubic titanium and molybdenum. The u solid solution is limited to less than 0.8 pct Mo at temperatures between 885" and 600°C. An equilibrium diagram for the binary system Ti-Mn has been published.&apos; Manganese behaves as a p stabilizer but undergoes a eutectoid transformation at about 20 pct Mn and 550°C to a plus an intermediate phase. The structure of this phase has been found to be isomorphous with the a phase FeCr." Accordingly, the phase is assigned the formula TiMn, although its actual location on the composition scale has not been determined and may well be not exactly at the equiatomic composition. In disagreement with ref. 2, the origin of the TiMn phase has been shown&apos; to be a peritectoid transformation at a temperature between 900" and 1000°C. A second intermediate phase occurs at the atomic proportions TiMn,. The structure of this phase was originally established by Wallbaum" as having a hexagonal lattice (C 14 type, 12 atoms per unit cell) isomorphous with MgZn,. In this work, the structure determination was confirmed and lattice parameters determined to be: a = 4.815 kX, c - 7.901 kX. Because of the extensive range of the P phase, the ternary system was suited to the determination of the phase boundaries by the parametric method of Andersen and Jette." During the course of the investigation, this method was found applicable only to the P/a+P boundaries but not to P/P+ compound boundaries. Metallographic methods were used alternatively for delineating these phase boundaries. Preparation and Treatment of Alloys Over 70 alloys were prepared for the study of this system. Ten gram alloy buttons were arc melted in a nonconsumable electrode furnace using inert atmosphere protection, and a water cooled copper crucible. The construction and operation of this type of melting unit has been described.&apos; To insure complete solution of alloy additions, especially molybdenum, the buttons were remelted alternately on top or bottom as many as five times. This was accomplished by a suitable mechanism for "flipping" the ingots over. It was very difficult to obtain homogeneous melts in the region of less than 75 pct Ti because of the very high melting point of molybdenum and Ti-Mo master alloys and the comparatively low boiling point of manganese. The object of this paper is to describe the electric equipment at the iron-ore mines of Penn Iron Mining Co., Vulcan, Mich. and of Republic Iron Co., Republic, Mich.; to give the results of tests; and to discuss the methods in use from an operating as well as from an efficiency standpoint. Electricity was introduced at the Penn mines for pumping, hoisting, and compressing air in the spring of 1907, upon the completion of a hydro-electric plant built by that company on the Menominee river about 4 miles from the mines. This plant was described in a paper1 presented before the Lake Superior Mining Institute. A paper2 presented at a meeting of the same Institute describes some of the operating features, and the safety devices of the electric hoist at the Curry shaft were briefly described in the Proceedings of the First Co-operative Safety Congress held under the auspices of the Association of Iron and Steel Electrical Engineers at Milwaukee, Wis., Sept. 30 to Oct. 5, 1912. Generating PoweR Plants After the success of electrical operation was assured, a second set of water wheels and generator was installed at the falls, for which provision had been made in the original design and in the construction of the foundations, and later three additional wires were added to the main transmission line, doubling its capacity and reducing the line loss. The general conditions of this installation are particularly favorable for hydro-electric operation. In the neighborhood of three-fourths of the power used is for mine pumping, which in the main is regular and continuous. For air compressing, power is used for about 18 hr. a day for five days, and 9 hr. for one day in the week, though occasionally when shaft sinking is going on a very small amount of compressed air may be

Previous work on the principles of comminution has shown: (I) that the surface produced is proportional to work input (Rittinger law,1a-3); (2) that there is regularity to the weight distribution of the fragments according to size.4-10 In this paper it is brought out that the surface on the fragments is distributed in definite and simple relation to size. The experimental work has involved: I. Construction of an apparatus capable of measuring the surface of mineral fragments independently of the chemical composition of the fragments and independently of the site of the surface; 2. Refining the methods available for measurement of particle size; 3. Designing and building a crusher capable of operating on very small quantities of mineral, if necessary on single crystals, and in such fashion as to minimize handling losses of material. Complete experiments have been carried out with massive quartz and individual quartz crystals. partial experiments, lacking surface measurements, have been made with glass spheres, galena, sphalerite, fluo-rite, salt and coal. Introduction The existence of regularity in weight distribution with size was noted many years ago, especially by A. 0. Gates;&apos; the subject was also studied in detail by one of us.6 In the latter paper it was shown that rocks can be divided into two classes: homogeneous rocks, which show no preferential breaking, and heterogeneous rocks, which show preferential breaking at the grain size of the rock. It was shown, furthermore, that the fragments obtained by rupturing a homogeneous rock occur (in the fine range) in such abundance as to permit the writing of a relatively simple equation to relate the weight retained on a screen to the screen opening. With screens of which the openings are in constant ratio, the weight retained, w, is related to the screen size x by the equation w = Cxm [I] In this equation C and m are experimental constants. A plot of weight retained against particle size is a straight line of slope m if the scales for x and w are both logarithmic. In the fine range, the slopes of the size-distribution graphs plotted according to the method described above vary within a limited range. An inspection of a number of size-distribution data by various experimenters indicates that the slope very seldom exceeds 1.0, but is usually greater than 0.7. More recently, schuhmann8 proposed a method of charting that has so many advantages of its own that it has been used primarily in this work. For fine particles Schuhmann has found that the data are represented by the equation (x)m k [2]

When calculating the pressure-volume characteristics of projected mine-ventilating circuits by orthodox methods, certain basic assumptions are required in order to employ the various available empirical data. It is assumed, for example, that the mine air is an incompressible fluid subjected to isothermal flow, an assumption sufficiently accurate for practical purposes since pressure and temperature differentials are small throughout the average circuit. A more erroneous assumption, however, is that all air is accounted for as it travels throughout the mine. No attempt is usually made to evaluate stopping leakage as it occurs; instead, the air volume required at the last crosscuts is assumed to enter the mine, travel the various intake air courses intact, sweep the workings and travel out by the return air courses to the point or points of exit from the mine. Actually, there is a leakage of air from intake to return at every stopping, the quantity of this leakage depending upon the tightness of the stopping and the pressure difference across the stopping. Unfortunately, a lack of empirical data and knowledge of the condition of individual stoppings makes an exact analysis of underground stopping leakage impossible. Generally, leakage is most severe through the old stoppings outbye the circuit. These are also subjected to higher pressure differences than the newer inbye stoppings. Therefore the circuit air volume diminishes at a decreasing rate progressing from outbye to inbye the circuit. Consider a simple mine circuit consisting of one intake and one return air course, each of equal and uniform section area and interconnected at regular intervals with crosscuts equipped with stoppings. At any point X inbye the circuit the air volume q on the intake air course equals that on the return air course and decreases with diminishing rate from outbye to inbye the circuit between the limits of Q1 completely outbye and Q completely inbye. Such a volume change is represented by curve a, Fig. I, which is computed with the aid of the equation q = Q1- (Q1- Q)(X + L)N. This equation results from the general algebraic equation of form q = k, — kXN after solving for kl and k with the knowledge that completely outbye X = o and q = QL, also completely inbye X = L and q = Q. Curves a, b and c, Fig. I, show values of q as ordinates versus values of X as abscissas, for values of N equal to 0.50, 1.00 and 2.00, respectively. WHEN this Government was founded, the framers of the Constitution wrote into that instrument a provision that Congress should "coin money and fix the value thereof;" and the Constitution prohibits making anything but "gold and silver" lawful money. So silver is written into our basic law. Shortly after President Washington took office in 1789 the Congress passed the first Mint Act, setting up the U. S. Mint. In that Act, signed by President Washington on April 2, 1792, the weight of the American dollar was fixed, and it was provided how much silver should be contained in a silver dollar and how much gold should be contained in a gold dollar. It was decided that 371 1/4 grains of pure silver was to be the standard dollar of America. That standard with respect to the pure silver content of the dollar has never changed.

DURING the investigation of the electrical transport properties of copper, it became necessary to prepare large single crystals of the highest obtainable purity. In an effort to meet these demands, single crystals of copper have been grown by the conventional pulling technique—as has been used for the growth of germanium and silicon crystals.&apos; Low-temperature resistance measurements made on these crystals show that, as far as their electrical properties are concerned, they are generally of significantly higher purity than the original high-purity material. The use of these pure single crystals with very high resistance ratios has made possible the acquisition of detailed information regarding the electron energy band structure of copper2-&apos; and has stimulated widespread effort on Fermi surface studies of a number of other pure metals. It is the purpose of this note to describe our method of preparing very pure copper crystals by the Czochralski technique. Precautions were taken to prevent contamination of the melt from the crystal growing apparatus. A new fused silica growing chamber was used to prevent possible contamination from previous groqths of other materials such as germanium, silicon, and so forth. A new high-purity graphite crucible was used to contain the melt. This crucible was baked out in a hydrogen atmosphere at -1200°C for an hour, prior to its use in crystal growth. Commercial tank helium, containing uncontrolled traces of oxygen, was used as the protective atmosphere. A trace of oxygen in the atmosphere appears to be necessary for obtaining high-purity copper single crystals. A 3/8-in-diam polycrystalline copper rod of the same purity as the melt was used as a seed. The copper rod was allowed to come in contact with the melt while rotating at 57 rpm. When an equilibrium was observed between the melt and the seed (that is, the seed neither grew nor melted), the seed was pulled away from the melt at a rate of 0.5 mils per sec. As the seed was raised, the melt temperature was slowly increased, so that the grown material diminished in diameter with increasing length. When this portion of the grown crystal was -1 in. long and the diameter reduced to less than 1/8 in., the melt was slowly cooled and the crystal was allowed to increase to - 1-1/4 in. diam as it was grown. By reducing the diameter of the crystal in this manner, the number of crystals at the liquid-solid interface was decreased until only one crystal remained. Fig. 1 shows a typical pulled copper single crystal. The purity of the starting material and the crystals was determined by the resistance ratio method: where the ratio is taken as R273ok/R4.2ok. The starting material, obtained from American Smelting and Refining Co., was the purest copper available. Most of the pulled copper crystals had much higher resistance ratios than the starting material. The highest ratio obtained to data is 8000. Table I is an example of the data obtained from some of the copper crystals. Note that Crystal No. 126 had a lower resistance ratio than its starting material and this might be due to carbon in the melt. The melt of this crystal was heated 250" to 300°C above the melting point of copper. At this temperature it was observed that copper dissolved appreciable amounts of carbon. The possible presence of carbon at the interface between the liquid and the crystal will result in reducing conditions and negate the slight oxidizing condition required for high purity as discussed below. The possible explanations of the improvement in the copper purity compared to the starting material are: improvement in crystal perfection, segregation, and oxidation of impurities. Of these, the latter seems to be most probable. A study of the etch pits in the pulled crystals showed them to have between 107 and 108 pits per sq cm. The etch procedure used was developed by Love11 and Wernick.10 The resistivity of the purest copper crystal grown was 2 x 10-10 ohm-cm at 4.2oK; from the work of H. G. vanBuren,11 the resistivity due to the dislocations would be approximately 10-l3 ohm-cm, which indicates that. the dislocations in the copper crystals would contribute relatively little to the resistivity of the crystals at this purity level. Segregation does not seem likely as the reason for purification of the material, since the resistivity of the first-to-freeze and the last-to-freeze portions are approximately the same, as was observed on Crystal No. 124. D. H. McLaughlin and R. C. Allen were associate chairmen. And C.K. Leith led the discussion.

INTRODUCTION Situated 23 miles east of Pretoria the Premier Mine started diamond production in 1903. Two years later it produced the largest diamond yet discovered, the 3 106 carat Cullinan stone. For the period to 1932 when the mine was closed down due to economic circumstances, open cast mining was practised using inclined rope haulage traction and by this time had produced 48.5 million carats of predominantly industrial quality diamonds from 148 million tons of ore. In 1945 it was decided to re-open the mine using underground mining methods. A system using long hole benching was devised (Hodgson and Sewel 1960). This system was later modified but still forms the basis for approximately fifty percent of production. Following the successful introduction of block caving on associated diamond mines in the Kimberley area (Gallagher and Loftus 1960) this mining method was introduced to the Premier Mine in the late 60&apos;s and now accounts for nearly 50% of production. This paper will discuss block caving at Premier Mine in the light of our experience and discussion will be directed to the main geological and structural features of the orebody and host rocks and the related constraints imposed on the mining methods. Reference is made to the long hole benching mining method for comparative purposes. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONS The ore from the block caving and bench mining areas gravitates via ore passes to a twin haulage, 500m below surface. Electric 13 tonne locomotives, each hauling a train of 10 Granby type cars, deliver the ore to two 42" x 48" (1.06m x 1.22m) jaw crushers. The ore is reduced in size to minus 0.15m before being hoisted to the treatment plant on surface. Hoisting is done with 12.5 tonne bottom discharge skips in a five compartment rectangular shaft using two 3 240 H.P. semi automatic Ward Leonard winders. A small single drum service winder operates in the other compartment. Men and materials travel in a separate shaft in a 5,4m x 2,8m cage operated by a Koepi winder. These two shafts are also the main intake airways to the mine. The two main extraction fans capable of 250 m3/s at 3,2 kPa are situated on surface and are connected to the underground workings by an incline and a network of air passes and return airways. GEOLOGY Although there are numerous occurrences of kimberlite bodies in the district, the Premier Mine kimberlite pipe is the only economic orebody. It is roughly oval in shape with surface dimensions of 900m on the long axis and 450monthe short axis. The surface area is 320 000 m2. The kimberlite has intruded a massive body of felsite and norite which is intersected by a number of faults. The contact between the kimberlite and host rock is clear cut and dips inward at an average angle of 80°. Cutting across the pipe and the country rock is a 75 metre thick gabbro sill, the top of which intersects the pipe below the 347m level and dips at 15&apos; to the north west. The kimberlite has been metamorphosed a distance of some 20m both above and below the sill contacts. Age measurements on biotite from the gabbro date the sill as 1 115 million years, thereby providing a minimum age of the pipe. (Pre Cambrian). All other pipes in South Africa are of Cretaceous age (60 million years). A simplified geological plan and section of the Premier Mine orebody is shown in Figure 1. It is thought that the kimberlite intruded in at least three distinct phases. The kimberlites of these different phases can be distinguished most easily by their characteristic colour. BROWN KIMBERLITE. This is the oldest kimberlite and forms a crescent shape in plan on the south eastern side of the pipe. In depth it increases in relative area. Although the brown kimberlite carries the highest diamond grade in terms of carats per ton all the various kimberlites in the Premier pipe are economic to mine.

I. INTRODUCTION. WE owe to the courtesy of Mr. R. M. Raymond, Manager of the El Oro Mining & Railway Co., Ltd., the permission of publishing in this paper the results of a series of experiments and tests made in view of determining the economical limit to which the fine grinding of the ore by tube-mills could be carried on. For the sake of clearness, the following definitions are given of certain terms used in this paper, as well as of the units and screens in the experiments. Slime : In a general way " slime" is that mill-product, of which from 90 to 95 per cent, will pass a 200-mesh screen (0.067 mm. aperture), and which is treated as one class of material in the El Oro cyanide-plants. As a screen-product, slime constitutes all material that *ill pass a 200-mesh, screen. In sizing, the following products are distinguished:- Coarse Sand : That material remaining on a 100-mesh (0.111 mm. aperture) screen. Fine Sand : That passing through. 100-mesh and remaining on a 200-mesh (0.067 mm. aperture) screen. Slime: That passing through 200-mesh. Fines, which pass through 200-mesh and settle in 30 seconds, and silt, which does not settle in 1 minute. Sand-index : The number proportional to its total fineness considered from the economical point of view, as explained on page 93. Absolute extraction : The percentage of values actually brought into solution. Actual extraction: The percentage of values actually brought to the ziuc-boxes. Units : Dollars, U. S. Currency; pounds; and short tons (2,000 lb.). Gold is valued at $20.67, and silver at $0.50 per ounce. The boundary conditions F = 1.0 and 4 = 1.0 (100 per cent) are dictated by the definition of F in the equation 1/F = aFp. These conditions have physical significance as the "limiting conditions" for the observed behavior in systems of dispersed particles. The other boundary conditions, cited by Gardner in his Eq. 3 as applying to this system, have no significance in the systems we studied. Maxwell&apos;s equation (Eq. 2) cited in Gardner&apos;s comments was developed for and limited to a regular, rather than random, dispersion of spheres which are sufficiently removed from each other so that they do not interfere with current flow about their neighbors. These restrictions also apply to Rayleigh&apos;s analysis. The title of Rayleigh&apos;s paper cited by Gardner is "On the Influence of Obstacles Arrayed in Rectangular Order upon the Properties of a Medium". He is not discussing randomly dispersed spheres. It might be inferred from Gardner&apos;s comments that Rayleigh specifically considered the differential equation (Gardner&apos;s Eq. 3). This is not the case. Mathematically, Gardner&apos;s Eq. 3 is exactly true for the system to which it applies, however, as both Rayleigh and Maxwell note that their equation for F in terms of F is not for randomly dispersed spheres. At the time we wrote our paper, we were aware of the work of Wyllie and Gregory as cited by Gardner. We cited their work in Ref. 5 of our paper. Our comment on page 287 of the paper about the validity of an m value of 1.3 for spheres with a porosity of 38 per cent remains as our answer to Gardner&apos;s question on this point. Our data, at 38 per cent porosity, show that the condition a = 1 and m = 1.3 holds for spheres near 40 per cent porosity.

What progress has been made in rapid excavation of tunnels and shafts? Where do we go from here? To get some answers to these questions was the reason that 500 tunnel men-contractors, geologists, professors, lawyers, mining engineers--came to the University of Minnesota May 15-17. The attendance of 500 astonished conference organizer Professor D. H. Yardley, who had anticipated half that number. They came from Japan, South Africa, Austria, Sweden, and Australia to name a few, and an officer of the Corps of Engineers thought all his people should have been there. The Civil and Mining Engineering Departments of the University combined for the program, which was staged by M. K. Cragun for the General Extension Division. The Saga of the Oso Tunnel The present state of the art of rapid excavation is "good." There is little controversy about where we go from here and what&apos;s more, this reporter finds that the technical know-how to automate excavation in any kind of ground is extant, even if it will take some years to achieve this state. In a nut- shell though, the present status can be seen in its various ramifications in the saga of the Oso Tunnel, as told by V. L. "Vic" Stevens of Boyles Brothers Drilling Co. :

His face wreathed in smiles, J. Richard Lucas, Chairman of the Keynote Session, conceded that "the papers appeared to have been of some interest." This was a modest description of the opening day of technical sessions at the SME Fall Meeting and Exhibition, October 13 to 15, in Tampa, Fla. The auditorium had capacity for 800 spectators and there was hardly a vacant seat visible. The topic, Resource Development of the Fertilizer Minerals, was covered in four authoritative papers. H. S. Ten Eyck set the stage. Resources are always viewed in relation to future requirements, and these depend largely on population. If the population trend continues, the world&apos;s 3.3 billion people will increase to 6.7 billion people by the year 2000. About 70% of this increased population will be in developing areas which are not capable of supplying sufficient food and fiber for their needs. Fertilizer is a means of bridging the crop shortage. Projections of fertilizer requirements by 1970 are from 53 million to 67.5 million long tons of plant nutrient which compares with 1964 consumption of 37.7 million tons. Looking ahead to 1980, the growth continues with an estimated demand of 80 million to 113 million tons combined of N P and K.

When a rock particle is subjected to an external force, internal stresses and deformations are experienced by the particle. Assuming that the breakage of a rock is mainly due to tensile stresses generated by the action of a pair of concentrated loads, F, directed in compression towards the loading points at the shortest distance, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the stress and deformation experienced by a particle of irregular shape can be determined with the aid of the theory of elasticity. According to the photoelastic experiments made by one of the present authors,&apos; the stress states in a rock particle of irregular shape are quite similar to that of an inscribed sphere of diameter x, as indicated in Fig. 1, but accompanied by the faint stresses, in the vicinity of the particle outside of the inscribed sphere. Therefore, the stress components in an irregularly shaped particle can be estimated by referring to stress components in a sphere. Applying polar spherical coordinates to an elastic spherical body, as shown in Fig. 1, the stress components are all expressed as multiples of F /x2 and more or less influenced by the loading angle and Poisson&apos;s number m.
