Cast copper alloys containing 10, 20, and 30 pct Ni and 0.75 to 0.80 pct Al were machine-milled into chips, then comminuted in a rod mill to fine flake powder utilizing a number of processing variables. The powders here internally oxidized, mostly at 800°C, in a low-pressure oxygen atmosphere. The consolidated powders were hot-extruded into bar stock. Room-tenmperature tension tests, stress-rupture tests mostly at 650°C, but also at 450° and 850°C, and hardness measurements after various annealing temperature treatments to study alloy stability were perfomted. Excellent room-temperature strength, high rupture strength at 650°C, and resistance to recrystallization at 1050°C were obtained. Problems in optimizing conditions for internal oxidation of Cu-Ni base alloys are discussed. THE interesting high-temperature properties of SAP' have stimulated considerable effort in the study of more refractory alloy systems where the potential for high-strength alloys at high temperature is great.2-13 A number of methods have been utilized to produce the desired fine, hard particle dispersions, of which internal oxidation2,9,7 of dilute solid-solution systems offers considerable promise by virtue of the potential for producing ultrafine, well-dispersed oxides. While most of the published works are concerned with pure metal matrices, a number of investigators have studied the effects of solid-solution strengthening.10,19 Use of more complex alloy matrices (for example, aging systems) has been unsuccessful because overaging still occurs at high temperatures in the oxide-containing alloys.14.15 Solid-solution strengthening is, however, effective at very high temperatures9,10 and might be expected to contribute importantly to the strength of oxide-dispersion strengthened alloys. For this study, internal oxidation of solid-solution alloys of copper and nickel, containing small amounts of aluminum, was chosen as the method of alloy preparation. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS Three copper alloys containing about 10, 20, and 30 pct Ni and each containing 0.75 to 0.80 pct A1 (enough to yield about 3.5 vol pct alumina) were prepared as air-cast ingots measuring 2.5 in. diameter by 6 in. high (see Table I for the analyses). Processing steps for all the alloys were as follows (also see Table 11): 1) Homogenization of the ingot at 982°C (1800°F) for 45 hr in an argon atmosphere. 2) Machine milling of ingots into fine chips. Average thickness was about 0.1 to 0.2 mm. 3) Hydrogen reduction of chips at 593°C (1100° F) for 1 hr to reduce copper and nickel oxides. 4) Rod milling of chips to finer powders. 5) Hydrogen treatment of powders as in step 3. 6) Internal oxidation of the powders. 7) Hydrogen treatment of oxidized powders as in step 3. 8) Hydrostatic compression of evacuated powders. 9) Sintering of compacts in hydrogen. 10) Hot extrusion. Variations in processing among the alloys were made in steps 4, 5, and 10 (see Table 11). In the past, two methods were utilized to internally oxidize alloy powders. Preston and Grant3 surface-oxidized dilute Cu-Al powders to obtain the necessary amount of oxygen to oxidize the solute metal (aluminum and silicon), and then permitted the formed copper oxide to diffuse and react with the solute in an argon atmosphere. Bonis and Grant4 exposed Ni-A1 and other nickel alloys to an oxygen pressure derived from the decomposition of nickel oxide at a preselected temperature, in an argon atmosphere. Both methods are applicable and can be modified to generate a range of oxygen pressures for oxidation of the solute but not the solvent metals. Procedure I: Surface Oxidation of Alloy A3, Cu-10Ni-0.76A1. Endurance strengths at 10' cycles, fatigue-hardening rates, and endurance strength/0.2 pct proof stress ratios have been determined jbr a range of Cu(Ni), Cu(Si), and S.R.0. Cu(Au) solid solutions. Some douht is cast on simple cross slip models of fatigue hardening in view of opposite composition dependencies of hardening displayed by Cu(Si) and Cu(Au). The temperature dependencies of hardening also are the opposite of predictions made on the basis of a cross slip model. A correlation apparently exists between the fatigue strength/0.2 Pc~ proof s1.re.s~ ratios and rates of fatigue hardening. An increase in PS/PS due to alloying or temperature change is accompanied by a decrease in hardening rate, and vice versa. In recent years there has been much interest in the determination of the dislocation structure of fatigued metals and alloys. The accumulated evidence, e.g., Refs. 1 to 5, suggests that the structure may be dependent on the stacking fault energy, 7, of the fatigued metal in the same way that fatigue hardening rates have also been shown to apparently depend on u .6' 7 The above research followed the various earlier theories relating crack nucleation to ease of cross slip, e.g., Refs. 8 to 131 so "ggesting that y may indeed be the parameter of principal significance in all facets of the fatigue process. However, comparatively little attention has been paid to correlating engineering fatigue data with observations of the above type. Certainly, it would be useful if potential engineering fatigue performance could be assessed from a knowledge of easily determined alloy properties, and the present research originated from this standpoint. TO investigate the widest Possible range of 7 would require the use of two solvent bases, e.g., aluminum and copper, but a reasonable coverage can be provided by copper-based solutions alone. Therefore, it was decided to work with Cu(Ni) and Cu(Si) solid solutions, the approximate stackillg fault energies of which are given in Table I. The y range extends from low, Cu(7.5 at- Pet Si), to moderately high in Cu(2-5 at. ~ct ~i) and two of the Cu(Ni) alloys. The values listed in Table I should be regarded as qualitative only, being derived as follows. Dillamore and smallman14 quote a value of 85 i 30 erg.cm-2 for the stacking fault energy of pure copper, based on an earlier value due to Howie and swannl5 corrected by Brown's formula.'' Since the ratios (alloy)h(pure copper) have been reported17,18 for Cu(Ni) alloys containing up to 30 pct Ni, approximate ) values for these alloys can be computed, and a rough estimate of 7 for Cu(50 at. pct Ni) obtained by extrapolation. The relatively low y value obtained in this way for Cu(50 at. pct Ni) coincides with the observation of Nakajima19 that the stacking fault probability is a maximum at this composition. Likewise, the y values for the three ~u(~i) alloys are estimates based on values given by Swann and Nuttingo corrected on the basis Of Brown's estimate that the true 7 values are probably 2.3 times greater than those originally computed. In addition to the above alloys it was decided to investigate short-range ordered (s.R.O.) CU(AU) alloys containing up to 25 at. pct Au. This last alloy has been shown to have a well-defined planar arrangement of dislocations when deformed,21,22 probably due to cross slip being restricted by the S.R.O. Engineering fatigue data was to be represented by the determination of endurance strengths, and these were to be correlated with fatigue hardening and mechanical property data. EXPERIMENTAL I, order to study the desired properties and property changes, the following alloys were prepared: Cu(2.5 at. pct Si), Cu(5.0 at. pct Si), Cu(7.5 at. pct Si), Cu(5.0 at. pct Ni), Cu(25.0 at. pct Nil, Cu(50.0 at. pct Ni), Cu(5.0 at. pct AU), Cu(15.0 at. pct AU), Cu(25.0 at. pct AU). The copper and gold were zone-refined, while the silicon was semiconductor grade. The nickel was of 99.95 p,t. purity.* All alloys were induction-melted in a *Kindly supplied by the International Nickel co. helium atmosphere, appropriate precautions being taken to avoid segregation in the Cu-Au series. Rod stock was obtained by rolling and swag,ng. A few Bridgman single crystals were grown for fatigue-hardening studies, but most material was machined into polycrystalline fatigue speciments of the design shown in Fig. 1, and into polycrystalline tensile and fatigue-hardening specimens of simple cylindrical design. The diffusion coefficients of zinc in single-crystal zinc and carbon in single-crystal and poly crystalline nickel were measured by means of radioactive tracer techniques both with and without the application of ultrasonic vibrations under conditions such that the temperature of the sample was closely controlled. The results of this investigation indicate no enhancement of diffusion in any of the samples. It is suggested that previously reported enhancement may have been due either solely to temperature increases caused by ultrasonic vibrations or in combination with changes in the boundary conditions. A number of observations have been reported in the literature in which it has been implied or inferred that the application of ultrasonics enhances diffusion (see, for example, Refs. 1-5). The present study was undertaken in an attempt to observe this effect under carefully controlled conditions, particularly with regard to measurement and control of the temperature of the sample. Two different types of systems were studied; these were the self-diffusion of zinc and the diffusion of carbon in nickel. EXPERIMENTAL For diffusion with ultrasonic energy applied, the samples were included as part of a resonant ultrasonic system operating at 58.5 kcps. The ultrasonic generators used were rated at 100 and 250 w and could be tuned over a frequency from 10 to 100 kc. A PZT (lead titanate/lead zirconate) ceramic transducer provided the driving vibration. This system requires no metallurgical joining of the specimen to the acoustical transmission line since the ultrasonic driver and the follow-up section clamp the specimen in position by means of a constant pressure of 50 lb developed by an air cylinder. The ultrasonic driver and follow-up section, both made of titanium, were 4 in. in length from clamping point to the end in contact with the specimen. Using the relationship given by Mason,6 A = V/f, the resonant wavelength, A, in titanium is calculated to be 3.3 in. at a frequency, f, of 58.5 kc, taking the velocity of sound in titanium, V, as 1.95 X 105 in. per sec. The 4-in. driver and follow-up section, therefore, are each 4.0/3.3 =1.21 times the resonant wavelength. Clamping pressure must be applied at stress nodes of the transmission line in order to preserve resonance. Therefore, a specimen length of 0.58 times the wavelength in the specimen was required to place the clamping pressure application points at stress nodes exactly three wavelengths apart. A stress antinode was contained in the center 3 in. of the specimen. A small PZT ceramic disc attached to the follow-up section provided an output voltage proportional to the intensity of the standing wave. This output voltage was monitored on an oscilloscope and the ultrasonic system was tuned to resonance by varying the frequency until the output signal was a maximum amplitude. The amplitude of the output signal was maintained constant throughout the diffusion anneal. A split cylindrical stainless-steel chamber, which was purged with argon prior to and during the runs, was placed around the specimen. The chamber in turn was surrounded by a movable furnace whose temperature could be controlled to 7C. Heat exchangers were used to cool the driver, follow-up section, and ultrasonic transducer. Great care was taken to obtain the true specimen temperature in all cases. Several different methods were tried; the most successful was that in which the thermocouple was held in contact with the midlength of the specimen by means of an asbestos insulating pad and wire straps. In the case of zinc, single-crystal specimens of 99.999 pct purity were used. The samples were 0.25 by 0.25 in. square and of the proper length for resonance, that is 1.1 in. long with the c axis parallel to the long dimension of the specimen for the case of diffusion perpendicular to the c axis and ultrasonic motion parallel to the c axis, and 1.9 in. long with the c axis perpendicular to the long dimension of the specimen for the case of diffusion parallel to the c axis and ultrasonic motion perpendicular to the c axis. In each case, one of the rectangular faces was electroplated with a thin film of zinc containing Zn The constant pressure used to clamp the specimen in place in the ultrasonic system caused some deformation in some of the samples. For these samples the deformation was concentrated in either end of the specimen; thus, for all samples (both zinc and nickel) the center in. was cut from the specimen after the diffusion anneal to be used for sectioning and counting. The nickel single-crystal samples, of 99.999 pct purity, were used in the form of rods 0.25 by 0.187 by 2.07 in. long with the (100) direction parallel to the rod axis. The polycrystalline nickel samples of 99.97 pct purity had an average grain diameter of 0.007 in. and were used in the form of rods 0.25 by 0.125 by 1.87 in. long. The direction of ultrasonic motion was parallel to (100) direction (bar axis) for the single-cqstal samples and parallel to the bar axis for the polycrystalline specimens. A thin film of c14 suspended in methanol was applied to the diffusing face of the specimen. Two specimens were butted together lengthwise for each diffusion anneal to minimize oxidation. After diffusion, a precision lapping device similar to the one described by Goldstein7 and a radiation detector were used to obtain a plot of specific activity vs penetration distance for each specimen. OgdEN et al.1 and Bumps et al.2 suggested that the solubility of aluminum in a titanium extended to 30 pct.* Sagcl,3 Clark and Terry,4 Anderko et al.,5 Ence and Margolin6 and Saulnier and croutzelles,7 subsequently proposed the existence of an intermetallic compound in the region of 25 pct Al. Although Anderko et al.5 suggested that the structure of this phase, Ti3Al, was of the DO,, (Ni3Sn) type, their conclusion was based only upon the results of a powder photograph that included reflections from ? = 0 to ?= 27° (CuK),some of which were reported to be indistinct. Ence and Margolin,6 referring to a 25 pct alloy (but without indicating whether the figure referred to weight or atomic pct) stated: "The structure of Ti2Al is isomorphous with Ti3Sn DO19, as pointed out by Pietrokowsky". But the point was not proven, because Ence and Margolin did not report values of calculated intensities of Ti2Al with the DO,, structure. In fact, the observed intensities they reported are in poor agreement with the values we calculate for DO19 (see Table I). Saulnier and croutzelle7 concluded, on the basis of electron micrography and microdiffraction studies, that the structure of the 25 pct A1 alloy was ordered hexagonal. Our purpose has been to unequivocally determine the Ti3Al structure. Alloys containing 25 pct Al were prepared from iodide titanium and spectrographic standard aluminum by levitation melting. The levitation chamber was evacuated to 10-6 mm Hg before filling with 99.999 + pct A. After casting, the alloy was chilled to liquid air temperature and crushed to -200 mesh in a percussion mortar. The powder, wrapped in molybdenum foil, was annealed (by induction heating) at 1000 "C for 2 hr in the argon atmosphere of the levitation chamber. STUDIES of surface relief and growth kinetics have lead to the concept that widmanstatten ferrite along with upper and lower bainite constitute a continuous series of decomposition products.1-4 Current models4 propose that these products form as plates with a coherent or semicoherent leading edge which propagates at a rate controlled by diffusion of carbon into the surrounding austenite. There are, however, important crystallographic and morphological differences between these products—particularly between upper and lower bainite. For example, upper bainite appears to exhibit a (11lIy orientation habit, whereas lower bainite develops with a more irrational habit near {2251y.5-7 Many of the morphological features of these decomposition products are not yet well-documented. Recent studiess have demonstrated that low-carbon martensites form as sheets of closely spaced needles on {lllly planes while higher-carbon martensites form as plates with {225}? or other orientation habits. The similarity in the crystallography of these two modifications of martensite with upper and lower bainite is striking. Therefore, a study of the morphology of bainite in a series of hypoeutec-toid alloy steels has been initiated to explore these relationships further. The question of immediate interest is whether upper and lower bainite form as plates or needles. A two-surface (approximately perpendicular) metallographic method was employed to study the morphology of bainite in a variety of low and medium alloy steels. Compositions of these steels have been reported elewhere. The behavior of 4340 and 4370 was typical and will be described here. Austenitizing treatments involved 20 min at 2350°F for 4340 and at 2000°F for 4370. Isothermal transformation was conducted in molten-salt baths. Upper bainite was produced at 925°F in the 4340 steel and lower bainite at 575°F in 4370 with transformation times adjusted to produce 10 to 15 pct of the decomposition product. Many of the morphological features of upper bainite have been catalogued in the recent literature.'' The two principal variants observed in the present investigation are illustrated in Fig. l(a). One form appears as long, thin plates or needles and the other as small, frequently irregularly shaped particles. Both variants may occur as isolated forms but more frequently appear in groups as demonstrated in Fig. l(a). Two-surface analysis reveals that these two variants constitute different sections through a single morphological form. To demonstrate this, a number of sections perpendicular to the plane of Fig. l(a) were prepared at various positions along the length of the elongated particles. A section taken at position 1 in Fig. l(a) is presented in Fig. l(b). Here, the dark line represents the edge of the sample and the left-hand portion of this photomicrograph is that from the surface perpendicular to the original plane of polish. Since it was necessary to repolish the original surface after each sectioning, the shape of the bainite particles on this surface, right hand side of Fig. l(b), changes with each sectioning. The disappearance of plate A, Fig. l(a), in Fig. l(b) emphasizes the small cross section of these structures. The group of particles in the lower left-hand

DURING the roasting of zinc sulfide concentrates and by-product recovery from flue dusts, the zinc sul-fate phase may occur in various stages of the processes. In addition to zinc sulfide, other sulfide phases are usually present such as CdS, PbS, CuzS, and FeS. Consequently, the effect of these sulfides on the thermal decomposition of ZnS04 was investigated. Merck high-purity, anhydrous zinc sulfate was used as the starting material. The sulfate was heated under an argon atmosphere, at a rate of 10°C per min. With the first slight indication of decomposition as determined by gas analysis, the sample was removed from the furnace and allowed to cool. X-ray patterns showed no other phase present. It is estimated that less than 0.05 pct of the ZnS04 decomposed. The metal sulfides were also heated under an argon atmosphere to drive off any adsorbed water. The materials were then sized (-200 to +270 mesh), mixed in predetermined mole ratios, and pressed into pellets. The experimental measurement of the reaction rate consisted of purifying the argon carrier gas, continuous flushing of the heated reacting mixture with argon, and collection and analysis of the SOn product gas. Oxidation hardening of cylindrical and spherical specimens first decreases with depth below the surface, but then increases again as the center is approached. This is in agreement with the view that this change in hardness is mainly determined by the change in velocity of the oxidation boundary, which affects the dispersion of the oxide. WHEN a thick slab of silver containing 0.3 pct Mg by weight is internally oxidized, the hardness measured on a cross section is found to decrease considerably with distance from the surface.&apos; This phenomenon has been attributed to the diminution of the velocity of the oxidation boundary. The smaller this velocity is, the more slowly the free-oxygen concentration rises towards the concentration in equilibrium with the oxygen gas. And a small 0 concentration favors dissociation and thus conglomeration of the oxide. For instance, the hardness decreases more rapidly during long annealings in nitrogen than in air.&apos; Measurements by Gregory and Smith3 on sections through internally oxidized Al-silver wire showed a smaller variation in hardness, probably because the wire diameter was only 0.9 mm. Wood4 found a drop in hardness with depth in internally oxidized Al-copper strip, and also—by electron microscopy—the concomitant increase in Al2O3 particle size. Under certain circumstances internal oxidation leads to formation of rather irregular inner oxide films in the midst of dispersed oxide. This special sort of conglomeration—discussed in Ref. 5—is also favored by greater depth below the surface.3,5 In this paper hardness measurements in large diameter cylindrical and spherical specimens are described. Here the oxidation velocity* goes through ness initially decreases with depth but increases again towards the center. Normally, the diffusion coefficient D1 of oxygen is very large compared to D2, that of the dissolved metal. If, furthermore, the atomic fraction c2 of the latter is much larger than the O-solubility cl- but c2D2 << c1D1- the velocities in question are easily calculated2 to be: for the cylinder and for the sphere. Here p is the radial coordinate of the oxidation boundary and R the specimen radius, which in dilute silver alloys is constant, as no external oxidation occurs. These equations have been derived for a divalent solute; for nondivalent solutes c2 has to be multiplied by half the valency. The equations are not valid near the center. For which can be considered as a standard case,2 the Eqs [I] and [2] begin to yield U-values which are appreciably too high for p/R = 0.05 and 0.15, respectively. But at the v-minima they are still very good approximations. These minima lie at p = emlR= 0.37R in the cylinder and p = 1/2 R in the sphere. Other factors besides the velocity v will also influence the hardness. The oxide concentration cox is constant in a flat strip, apart from a narrow region in the middle,2 but in cylindrical and spherical specimens cox decreases steadily with depth. It is well-known1-4 that Fe-Si alloys from approximately 9 to 27 at. pct Si show an ordered structure of the Fe3Si type at room temperature. Recently Meinhardt and Krisement,&apos; through an investigation of Fe-Si alloys at room temperature by neutron diffraction, discovered that at 10.8 at. pct Si ordering of the FeSi type occurs while above this composition the normal Fe3Si-type superstructure appears. This FeSi type of ordering was also found by Davies8 as indicated by X-ray diffraction measurements on an Fe-8.7 at. pct Si alloy. Meinhardt and Krisement7 extended their neutron-diffraction work and determined the phase-boundary temperatures for both FeSi- and Fe3Si-type ordering. The ammonium sulphate process for recovering alumina from clays was proposed by Rinman, Buchner, and others many years ago, and more recently various modifications have been investigated both here arid abroad.l-Is The process, as it is being investigated by the Bureau of Mines, involves the following essential steps: (I) sulphating the alumina in the clay by baking with ammonium sulphate at approximately 4m°C., (2) leaching with water to extract aluminum sulphate and ammonium sulphate, (3) crystallization of ammonium alum, (4) conversion of the alum to aluminum hydroxide by the ammonia gases given off during the baking, and (5) calcining the aluminum hydroxide to alumina. The over-all reaction between kaolinite (the most important alumina mineral in most clays) and ammonium sulphate during the baking step may be expressed as follows: Al2O8.2SiO2.2H2O + 4(NH4)2SO4 = (NH4)2SO4.A12(SO4)3 + 6NH3(g) + SH2O(g) + 2SiO2 [i] There is definite evidence. as is shown later. that the aluminum occurs in the baked product as anhydrous ammonium alum rather than as aluminum sulphate, provided the baking temperature is not much above 4o0°C. It is probable that the reaction takes place in the following steps: (NH4)2SO4 = NH3 -(- NH4HSO4 [2] Al2O3.2SiO2.2H2O + ;}NH4HSO4 = A12(SO4)3 + 3NH3 + 5H2O + 2SiO2 [3] A12(SO4)3 + (NH4)2SO4 = (NH4)2SO4.A12(SO4)3 [4] In onc modification of the process, the ammonium sulphate is first decomposed according to Eq. z, and the clay is treated with the resultant ammonium acid sulphate. Reaction I is highly endothermic. On the basis of the best available data, the following values have been estimated for the changes in heat content and free energy in calories per mol: -AH = 331,040 - 34T -AF = 331~040 - 78.3T log T - 671.8T The heat required&apos; at 25OC is 320,900 cal. per mol, or 5650 B.t.u. per pound of alumina. The theoretical equilibcium pressure of NHa, based on the free-energy equation given above, increases very rapidly as the temperature rises above 3o0°C., and reaches one atmosphere at 43s°C. Ammonium alum solutions are almost ideal for crystallization. A saturated solution of ammonium alum contains 126. grams of AlzOa per 1000 grams of water at 90°C. and only 16.5 at 20 C. Carlisle: An old friend and good friend, Alan Bateman, is the Silliman Professor of Geology Emeritus at Yale and editor of the Journal of Economic Geology. Now, Alan, let&apos;s start off by telling us something about how you became interested in copper. Bateman: Well, after I left Yale in 1913, I was appointed one of the field members of the Secondary Enrichment Investigation. We spent three years in the field studying all the copper deposits of North America, trying to find out how secondary copper enrichment took place. As part of this investigation, I went up to Kennecott, Alaska, in 1916. After the trip I was asked by the president of the company to become consulting geologist to them. I accepted his offer, and to this day I&apos;m still consulting geologist to the Kennecott Copper Corp. Up at Kennecott, there were both Henry Krumb and my good friend Henry DeWitt Smith, who was general superintendent. He and I had been together at Yale, and I had ushered at his wedding. Interestingly enough, Henry took his bride to Alaska and I took mine there two months later. My assistant was Don McLaughlin, and I think that was his first experience in a mining camp. We published a paper on Kennecott together and cemented a friendship lasting to this day.

Following closely Marcona Corp.&apos;s announcement of its new Marconaflo process for transporting mineral slurries by ship (see pp. 96-97, Sept. 1969 [ ]), Midland-Ross Corp. (M-R) now heralds its metallized iron pellet process which supplements Oregon Steel Mills1 (Oregon Steel) new Portland, Ore., plant. Harry J. Bolwell, president of M-R describes the company&apos;s M-R Pellet as "the most exciting advance in steelmaking in a decade, one which will profoundly affect the industry." In fact, other knowledgeable industry spokesmen believe that with these developments the mini-steel plant era is now here and that this technical development along with the Marconaflo process will revolutionize iron ore shipments and steelmaking. The M-R president predicts that electric furnaces can account for 20% of the annual U.S. steel production by 1975, compared with 14% at the present time because of these developments.

New Mexico produced 38,882,342 bbl. of oil in 1943, and regained seventh place among the oil-producing states. This production was an increase of 6,968,526 bbl., or 21.8 per cent, over the figure for 1942. The maximum per-well allowable on Jan. I, 1943, was 38 bbl. daily and at the end of the year this figure had been increased to 48 bbl. Allocations as set by the New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission closely followed recommendations by the Petroleum Administrator for War and the average daily pipe-line runs were 106,476 bbl., being within 2.2 per cent of these allocations. Production for Lea County was 33,043,925 bbl.; Eddy County, 5,405,-967 bbl.; northwestern New Mexico, 432,070 bbl., and Chaves County, 380 barrels. Drilling activity for New Mexico in 1943 was only 75 per cent of that in 1942, with 255 completions. Of these completions 180 were oil wells, 10 gas wells and 65 dry holes. The ratio of dry holes to producers, more than I to 3, was the greatest in recent years. Of these dry holes, 46 were drilled within the boundaries of proven . areas while 19 were wildcats. Wildcat drilling during 1943 was responsible for the discovery of four new oil fields and one new gas field, as well as three extensions to existing proration areas. At the close of the year the New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission had designated 64 areas as proven for oil and/or gas. The Monument area was again New Mexico&apos;s largest producing oil field, with an annual production of 7,228,855 bbl. Next was Eunice, with 6,461,044 bbl., followed by Vacuum with 4,946,110 bbl. IIobbs, ranking fourth, with 3,799,114 bbl., was the leader in total recovery with an accumulated production of 104,180,53I bbl., or more than 10,000 bbl. per acre to date. Drilling activity in Lea County accounted for completion of 67 oil wells, 2 gas wells and 24 dry holes. One of these oil wells was the discovery well of a new area and three extended proven areas. The most active drilling campaign in the county was again in the Maljamar area, where 18 oil wells were completed. The Maljamar Cooperative Repressuring Agreement affected 141 producing wells, and operations were a decided success, more than 85 per cent of the gas produced being returned to formation. The new oil field for Lea County was designated as the San Simon area although boundaries have not been established to date. Discovery well for this area was the Skelly Oil Company&apos;s State U. No. I, in theNE. NE. K of sec. 5, T.22 S.,R.ssE. This well was drilled to a total depth of 4183 ft. and plugged back to 4138 ft. after encountering bottom-hole water. Initial production was 124 bbl. per day on the pump. This oil is 37.4&apos; gravity and has a sulphur content of I per cent. Productian is from Yates sand of Permian age. THE partial excess entropy of interstitial solutes in metals, SXS , has usually been interpreted as being principally vibrational ever since the initial statistical treatment of hydrogen in metals by Fowler and Smith-ells. The vibrational entropy is considered being due to the optical modes of the light interstitial atom. Little attention has been given to the magnitudes of the values of SXS&apos;. Leiser and Witte2 and Ebisuzaki and O&apos;Keeffe3 have noted that for hydrogen in metals Si is approximately constant for different metals. On the other hand if it is assumed that the interstitial solute is an isotopic defect then, as shown by McLellan, SXS should vary from metal to metal as follows: where S is the standard entropy of the solvent and Mi, M, are the masses of the interstitial and solvent atoms. respectively. Fair agreement with this equation was found for oxygen in silver and nitrogen in iron4 and for carbon in iron.= Ln a subsequent analysis of metal- hdrogen systems McLellan&apos; found a variation of $&apos; from metal to metal but not in a manner expected from the isotopic impurity equation. However, a possible correlation between the energy of solution, Ei, and sf was noted. THE importance of topography to geology is so commonly underrated as to deserve to be pointed out again and again. The relation of topography to the different branches of geology may be seen best by a glance at them all. Geology is well understood to consist of the observation of facts about rocks as materials of the earth (geognosy), and the explanation of those facts (geognosy). The facts to observe are : I. GEOMETRICAL, as (1) structure, including the dip and strike at different points, the size, shape, and position of basins and saddles; (2) vertical section, that is, the thickness of rock groups and of their parts ; (3) horizontal or geographical position. 11. PHYSICAL, such as texture, whether sedimentary or crystalline ; and, if crystalline, whether granitic, porphyritic, amygdaloidal, globular, or concretionary ; whether compact or granular; coarse or fine; pervious or impervious; hard or soft; firm or tender; with cleavage or without ; massive or thin ; the microscopic structure ; also whether magnetic or not ; soluble or insoluble ; fusible or infusible ; and the constituent minerals. 111. After an adventurous past-four changes of government in thirty years -the whole of Silesia and attached coal territories have become part of the Polish State. The coal resources of this area are the biggest among the European countries. Under a surface area of 5700 sq km are about 100 coal seams, with a total thickness of 150 meters. According to German estimates, there are some 150 billion metric tons of coal ranging in thickness up to 14 m within a depth of 1500 m. The seams are mostly level, free from faults, with good top and bottom; the coal is of excellent quality, hard and clean; and mining conditions are favorable. The mines are worked at considerable depth by means of vertical shafts and operate with cage and skip hoisting. Before the war, the mines were up to date, equipped with modern machines. Among the European countries, output per man shift was the highest ? 1.9 to 2.1 metric tons ? and cost of production was the lowest.
