"In the mining industry, most of stripping and rock fragmentation is performed by blasting. The academician N.V. Melnikov has projected that blasting methods would be used to crush 20% of soft rocks and 80435% of medium and hard rocks. Thus, the volume of blasting will continue to increase.This is especially true for electrical blasting, since this method has a number of well known advantages, and in some cases (e.g. for underground blasting in coal mines) it is the only acceptable method."

Electrolyzing oxides of titanium, aluminum and niobium could prepare high-Nb bearing TiAl alloy (Ti-45Al-9Nb) at 1500°C. The chosen electrolysis voltage is 3.5V, which is lower than reducing voltage (~4.7V) of electrolyte CaF2, but higher than that of titanium, aluminum and niobium oxides. The investigation shows that compared with traditional methods, this method for preparing high-Nb bearing TiAl alloy is of many advantages such as few steps, friendly environment, low energy consumption, low cost and high current efficiency.

"The application of geometallurgy and corresponding sample selection can take on several formats within industry. Current practice can range from a strictly geostatistical approach to one in which geological and metallurgical parameters are used in combination to create a representative sample selection strategy. The stage of a project and the level of information available at the time of sampling influences the methodology used to create a representative sample.A geometallurgical study of Carpathian Gold’s Rovina Valley Project in Romania is used to demonstrate a sample selection strategy that integrates geological, mineralogical and metallurgical data to maximize the relevance of the geometallurgical unit definitions. This approach, practiced by Xstrata Process Support for its’ clients, ensures that the results of the metallurgical program can be interpreted in the context of these units.INTRODUCTIONGeometallurgy is a cross disciplinary approach in which metallurgical performance of an ore is linked to intrinsic geological and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of a geometallurgical study is to characterize the range of metallurgical performance of an orebody. This allows the geoscientist or metallurgist to create a robust flowsheet able to treat the full range in variability and to develop production strategies to maximize financial performance. The standard approach is to individually sample and test a series of ore types or geometallurgical units. Several different approaches are used in industry to define what constitutes geometallurgical units and how to sample them.One current methodology is the use of multivariate statistics. Geochemical data along with available geological data are used to define multiple variability domains (Williams, 2004; Walters, 2009). There are risks associated with this methodology since the extent of the data set itself may not support a purely statistical approach at the time that metallurgical units need to be defined. The assay suite collected by exploration programs is often limited to pay metals while metallurgical performance is often affected by ore gangue components. Furthermore, in many cases metallurgical scoping and pre-feasibility studies take place prior to the availability of extensive geochemical data sets. Purely statistical methods can produce multiple populations which require extensive sampling, testing and validation prior to consolidation into a reasonable number of composites for metallurgical testing. Methodologies are therefore required that allow representative sampling and testing of consolidated geometallurgical composites to occur at various phases throughout the development of a mining project."

The Trident Gold Deposit is centred on the historical Higginsville Mining Centre, between the world class gold centres of St Ives (+15 Moz) and Norseman (+6.5 Moz) in Western AustraliaÆs productive eastern goldfields. It lies towards the southern end of the Norseman-Wiluna Greenstone belt in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton. The current in situ resource for Trident is estimated at 840 000 ounces, with production to date in excess of 500 000 ounces.Trident is hosted primarily within a thick, weakly differentiated gabbro with subordinate mafic and ultramafic lithologies and comprises a series of north-northeast trending, shallowly north plunging ore zones. The deposit comprises two main mineralisation styles; thin, lode-style, nuggety laminated quartz veins (Athena and Artemis) that formed along major shear zones primarily at the contacts between the various mafic and ultramafic lithologies; and large wallrock-hosted ore-zones comprising sigmoidal quartz tensional vein arrays and associated metasomatic wall rock alteration (eastern zone, western zone and Apollo) hosted exclusively within the gabbro.The thin laminated quartz vein lodes are important to the Trident Gold Deposits production profile as they constitute 33 per cent of the metal from only 14 per cent of the tonnes. The delineation, grade estimation and extraction of these lodes require a disproportionate amount of geological and engineering input due to the small scale variability in width, grade and direction. "INTRODUCTIONMineral processing is undergoing growth and change at a rapid rate. The modern flotation process was discovered only in the mid-twenties, and uranium leaching in the mid-fifties. The growth of individual unit equipment size is also a recent development and is perhaps most dramatically illustrated by the increase in size and connected horsepower in grinding mills. It is also apparent in much of the equipment used in mining operations.These technical and mechanical developments have influenced the design of plants but not to the expected degree.Many metallurgists believed until recently that grinding an ore in the absence of steel results in a loEs of selectivity in the flotation. However results reported by Thornton (1), Fahlstrom (2), Canmet (3 & 4) have shown on the contrary better selectivity and improved recovery at a lower operating cost. According to the Aitik (2) plant results, the net difference in cost plus tailing value in favour of the two-stage autogeneous grinding circuit is in the order of 40 cents per ton of ore milled. Even a greater difference was indicated by the results obtained by Canmet on a sample supplied by Mattagami Lake Mines Ltd.Yet how many plants are taking advantage of these findings and how many plants are being converted. How much more improvement of the results would have been obtained if these tests had incorporated optimization of classification efficiency? By nature the mining industry and the mineral processors are conservative, and tend to emphasize the possible penalties for an unsuccessful innovation out of proportion to the potential rewards even for a significant improvement."

This paper presents a dynamic analyses of heap leach pad stability under high phreatic levels and various levels of seismic loading. The dynamic analysis were conducted as fully non-linear two dimensional analyses with fully coupled liquefaction triggering using the Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC) computer code. Also, the geotechnical parameters, appropriate earthquake record selection and modification, model calibration, numerical analyses and results are discussed.

Recently, questions regarding the influence of atmospheric temperature and humidity levels on airblast levels have arisen at a number of blast sites. Humidity is alleged to have contributed to high levels of disturbance within communities surrounding blasting. In some cases, local regulatory agencies considered adopting guidelines to specify humidity and temperature ranges under which blasting cannot take place. However, it is normal blasting industry practice not to consider humidity or temperature effects, in the absence of inversions, on airblast levels. When blasting is conducted in the vicinity of residential structures, the influence of weather on the propagation and attenuation of airborne noise from the blasting site is always a concern. Sound naturally attenuates in air with distance from the source. A part of this attenuation is attributed to divergence at the airblast wave front, while the remainder of the attenuation is an accumulation of various factors that include temperature and barometric pressure, absorption in air due precipitation and vegetation, wind and temperature gradients, atmospheric turbulence and topography (Beranek, 1971). Wind speed and wind direction, as well as vertical and horizontal temperature gradients can cause airblasts to focus in local regions surrounding blasting operations and may result in air pressures greater than expected. In fact, wind and temperature inversions can actually increase sound levels with distance from the blast site. Close to the blast site, the effects of inversions may be negligible but may exceed 10 dB at 800 m or greater (Davis and Cornwell, 1991).

On the Hauraki goldfields, within the limits of Cape Colville Peninsula, the Paheozoic rocks are confined to the district north of a line drawn from Mercury Bay on the east coast to Rocky Point on the shore of the Frith of Thames. South of Kennedy's Bay they are developed on the east coast only at Kuaotunu, at which place gold mining is carried on in sandstones and slates of this age. Between Tapu Creek and Coromandel there is, along and adjacent to the shore of the gulf, a very considerable development of PaJreozoic and in part of Trias rocks, and between the Tiki Stream and the northern end of Tokatea Hill, along the western slope of the main range, lies the special area of the Palreozoic or carboniferous rocks that have more particularly to be dealt with in this paper. The same formation has a large devolpment between Cabbage Bay and the northern slopes of Moehau, and appears to the water marge on both sides of this part of the peninsula.In this part they are of special interest as having, on the west spur of Moehau, a considerable variety of dyke rocks intruded into the sedimentaries, the interest in which is increased by the fact that these dykes theIllselves are of Palreozoic age and correspond to the dykes that are so' abundant in the Tokatea-Tiki area. It is this Tokatea-Tiki area as a goldfield, and its rocks as distinguished from later volcanic' products' on other parts 'of the peninsula...

"Rapid expansion of urban areas dictates the need to expand/rehabilitate the existing buried infrastructure at the same rate. The technical challenges such as variable soil and rock profiles, high groundwater tables and limitations imposed by the built environment combined with present fiscal and schedule limitations necessitates the implementation of fast and cost effective construction methods. Since drilling procedures and equipment allow the construction of overlapped pile systems in almost all subsurface conditions, the secant pile walls have become a cost-effective shoring option for such infrastructure expansion/rehabilitation projects. The secant pile walls constructed in a circular plan layout to form a vertical shaft provide unique advantages since they act as a compression ring. Secant pile walls require stringent drilling tolerances be achieved in order to provide structural support and to work as a compression ring in addition to a groundwater cut-off wall.This paper outlines design methodology, installation procedures and verification techniques used for the secant pile compression ring for the Waterloo Landfill Pumping Station No.2. The secant pile compression ring had a 6m inner diameter with over a 20m wall depth and over 18m excavation depth. The details of subsurface conditions, analytical and numerical methods used in design are presented here. The details of the monitoring system are introduced and results of monitoring are presented and compared with analytically estimated and numerically simulated quantities. The results presented in this study are considered to be of interest to those involved in design and construction of vertical circular shafts."

Last month's engineering fundamentals article discussed some general considerations of underground mine ventilation. This month's article takes a look at auxiliary ventilation-brattice, fans, and ducting-in underground mines. The need for good, efficient auxiliary ventilation increases as mines get deeper and move farther from ventilation shafts. New mining methods and equipment resulted in faster work area advances, liberating more dust, gas, and heat. As a result, worker health and safety requirements in the face area have become more stringent. For all these reasons the safety and efficiency of any underground mine depends heavily on its auxiliary ventilation. The purpose of such ventilation is to supply sufficient quantities of clean air to the face of the drift and to maintain air quality within desired limits until expelled from the mine.

Active placer mining in Alaska began near Juneau in 1880, but the first gold rush did not start until 1896; then the discovery of the Klondike brought gold seekers from all parts of the world. A few of the newcomers were experienced miners, but the majority knew nothing whatever of placer mining. Even those who were placer miners of much experience found entirely new conditions, notably frozen ground, that presented many difficult problems. As a result, numerous methods of mining and of thawing frozen ground were tried. From these trials the practice described in this bulletin has been developed. All known placer fields in Alaska have been mined to some extent, and some have been virtually exhausted. In most districts, however, there remain large quantities of low-grade gravel and also some small isolated areas of comparatively rich gravels which could not be successfully mined because of adverse physical conditions. These districts are now the scene of most placer mining, including dredging, hydraulicking, drifting, mechanical methods of open-cut mining, and ground sluicing (or booming) followed by " shoveling-in."

THIS REPORT describes the occurrence, mining, and use of refractory clay in Colorado within Region III of the Federal Bureau of Mines, which includes the States of North arid South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona. Field work by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, included examination of active and abandoned refractory-clay mines as well as a reconnaissance survey and sampling of numerous clay-bearing formations exposed in Colorado. Information from the survey and the sampling will help guide private industry in its search for virgin sources of refractory clay. Library research of published and unpublished reports from various Federal, State, and private sources was conducted during the early phase of the investigation. Most of the refractory clay mined in the Denver-Golden district of Colorado is not used for refractory purposes but is blended with other clays in the manufacture of structural clay products. The predominantly flint-clay de-posits in the Pueblo and Fremont County districts are mined and utilized chiefly in fabricating refractory products.

Although not immune from the problems affecting the U.S. economy generally, the mineral industry in 1991 contributed nearly $300 billion in the value of processed materials of mineral origin. Supporting this contribution, the Bureau of Mines continued the research and analytical programs highlighted in this annual review. Featured in 1991 were such relatively new programs as minewide monitoring applications in ground control and advances in processing of ceramics and composites, along with more traditional research into health, safety, and mining technology, minerals and materials science, and environmental technology. Under Bureau sponsorship, a National Minerals Policy Forum brought together some 200 executives from industry and Government concerned with minerals policy to begin a dialogue on developipng a policy statement on current minerals issues. A major feature of the forum was the keynote address by Secretary of the Interior Manuel Lujan, Jr.

Namakwa Sands is a heavy minerals mining and beneficiation business in the Anglo Base Metals Division, and operates along the West Coast of South Africa. The business encompasses mining, mineral concentration, separation, and smelting operations. The smelting process comprises the carbonaceous reduction of ilmenite to produce titania slag with a TiO2 content of 86%, and iron with a carbon content of 2.5%. The Namakwa Sands smelter, situated near the Saldanha Bay harbour, commenced smelting operations in 1994, when a 25 MW DC-arc furnace was commissioned. The smelting operations were expanded in 1999, with the commissioning of a second 35 MW DC-arc furnace. Despite the fact that ilmenite smelting poses a technical challenge in terms of the high temperatures required, the physical characteristics of the slag, the constraints placed on the feedstock, and the tight product specifications, Namakwa Sands has continually increased slag production since 1995. High furnace feed-on utilization and furnace stability, complemented by continuous improvement drives, will be thevehicle to drive performance in the short-term, with longer-term performance enhancements due to strategic process development. Cementitious seals are made of foamed cements with strength ranging from 100 to 600 psi. These cementitious seals are usually used at locations where the seal will be subjected to some convergence, assuming that this material can absorb entry closure without compromising the structural integrity of the seal. Prior to 2006, Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) conducted full-scale tests on various cementitious seals designed to meet or exceed the 20-psi horizontal static load requirements of the old 30 CFR1 75.335. Both hydrostatic and dynamic loading tests were conducted. The structural response (pressure and displacement readings) obtained from these tests were recorded. The stability of the cementitious seal is based on balancing the load applied to the face of the seal from the explosion against the shearing resistance at the seal/rock interface. Therefore, the properties of the seal/rock interface, such as stiffness, cohesion, friction, etc. are critical to determine the stability of a cementitious seal. These properties are usually assumed by the researchers in their models. This paper emphasizes the importance of having the correct properties of seal/rock interface in the numerical modeling. FLAC 3D models were developed to simulate Celuseal2 cementitious seals subjected to both hydrostatic and dynamic loadings. Using the hydrostatic and dynamic loading test data conducted at LLEM, the static and dynamic properties of the seal/rock interface were back calculated. The FLAC 3D models showed good agreement with the test results.

This report contains the results of a technical and economic evaluation of conceptual systems for the underground mining, rubblization, and in situ retorting of deep oil shale deposits. Study efforts were first directed towards evaluation of the applicable geology, associated minerals, rock mechanics, in situ retorting, access mining, ventilation, rubblization, safety, and environmental impact factors. Conceptual systems were synthesized and then evaluated against these factors from both a technical and limited economic viewpoint. The results of these evaluations were then analyzed and, based upon this analysis, the following two systems were selected for further study: System II: Room and Pillar-Vertical Drill and Blast System IV: Tunnel Boring-Horizontal Ring Drill and Blast Due to the large number of variables to be considered, a computer program was developed and utilized to provide data for the cost trade-off studies and economic analysis. Results of the early computer runs indicated the value of the tool available? in the computer program and led to an extension in the contract to determine the sensitivity of the systems to several of the more apparent significant variables. These results in turn led to a refinement in the design assumptions and a better understanding of the technical and economic options available to an owner-operator of a Vertical Modified In Situ Shale Oil Extraction System. The report provides a detailed analysis of 23 electrical accident countermeasures contemplated for use in the metal/non-metal mining industry. The costs and potential benefits of implementing groups of these countermeasures are estimated, and methods arc outlined by which the operator ran choose countermeasures in an effective manner. The analysis is based largely on an extensive electrical accident event tree which is developed in detail. For those countermeasures which are not currently technically feasible, several prototype devices were developed to help speed development. These included a trolley arc eliminator and a safer mine electricians multimeter.
